Art

Pupils will be completing their Koinobori project, creating carp streamers with which to celebrate Children’s Day on 5th May as celebrated in Japan. Following this, they will extend their learning about the Vikings in a cross curricular project with history lessons Making drawing studies of the longships used by the Vikings, they will translate their pencil studies into a threedimensional sculpture, creating a boat complete with shields, sails and oars.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts lessons this term students are working towards their performance of Oliver Jr! This will be performed on 15th and 16th May. Students will learn choreography and choral work for large ensemble numbers, as well as working on character development, and where appropriate solo work Students will learn to work collaboratively as part of a team and understand the skills required to put on a musical.

Term 2024

FLAM (Français langue maternelle)

This term, pupils will work on a new topic, focusing on reading and writing a letter They will learn how to write a formal letter to request information and how to write a personal letter to a friend, for example Additionally, pupils will practise writing a summary of a text. To write a letter and a summary, pupils will continue to broaden their vocabulary (words of same family), spelling (homophones), grammar (subject/verb agreement) and conjugation (present and imparfait) Finally, they will have the opportunity to engage in a new type of exercise to express their point of view: a philosophical discussion! In their end-of-unit assignment, they will be asked for example to write a letter by respecting the instructions, to show their understanding of the different components in a simple sentence (verb, adjective, subject), and to spell correctly invariable words

French

During the first part of term, pupils will discover a range of different jobs. They will learn how to ask questions in a formal way in order to interview someone about the job of their choice We will also discuss which qualities we need for which job.

After the holiday, the pupils will learn the “future simple” and will use it to imagine their life in 2030 We will also talk about the planet Mars and will compare it with Earth Pupils will do a presentation using the future tense to present life on a different planet in 2050.

Harmony (Sustainable Thinking)

These lessons are designed to teach children about the Principles of Harmony in Nature and the importance of keeping this harmony in balance The Principles of Harmony are Interdependence, Natural cycles, Diversity, Adaptation, Health, Geometry, and Oneness The subject is explored by students through inquiries of learning, reading, and discussing stories, explorative walks in nature, and creative activities These questions are linked with their syllabus content each half-term and learning is interdisciplinary with Art, Maths, English, and Science subject knowledge development

This term’s theme will be Sharing the Planet

Summer 1: Oneness

Inquiry Question: Why is biodiversity important in the environment?

Students will explore and develop an understanding of how biodiversity is important in the environment because it contributes to ecosystem stability and resilience, provides essential ecosystem services, offers genetic resources for innovation and adaptation, has cultural and recreational value, supports economic activities, and enhances resilience to climate change Protecting and conserving biodiversity is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and ensuring the well-being of present and future generations of all living things

Summer 2: Diversity

Inquiry Question: How do we live different lives on common ground?

Students will study the diverse ways in which living things coexist and interact within shared environments on the Planet and explore ways in which we can navigate living different lives on common ground

They will learn about how soil serves as a vital carbon storehouse, playing a crucial role in carbon sequestration, soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem function Protecting soil is essential for mitigating climate change, promoting food security, and preserving natural ecosystems

Humanities

In Year 5 we will be finishing our topic on the Anglo Saxons Discovering more about Crime and punishment, Anglo Saxon crafts and diet We will also be working on and researching more about Anglo Saxon beliefs and culture

As the Summer Term progresses, we will be looking at a Geography themed topic about the threat of climate change Learning about the causes and effects of climate change, including the greenhouse effect, global warming and carbon footprints Children will research the impact on plants and animals Pupils will also explore how children's rights are being affected and what can be done to help

Term

Latin

We will begin the term with looking at how to add adverbs to a range of simple present tense verbs to create some English to Latin sentences. We will look at the verb ‘to be’ with masculine and feminine adjectives in singular and plural forms We will also be looking at Roman trade, commerce and life in the Roman army in Chapter 6 and 7of Minimus and what life was like in the Roman York (Eboracum) when the only emperor to visit Britannia came to visit!

Mandarin

In the summer term, children will mainly learn to talk about hobbies in Chinese

Summer 1, students learn to talk about what they do in their free time, what they like doing, and talk about sports, understanding and responding to questions. Students will be able to ask and answer questions about hobbies.

Summer 2, students learn the days of the week, build sentences based on the grammar structure, learn about young people’s hobbies in China This term, children will learn about the Chinese Dragon Boat festival, explores the legendary story of the festival and celebrate it by making origami and crafts

Maths

As we progress through the school year, your child will engage in a comprehensive study of key mathematical concepts that are crucial for their development and understanding of more complex topics in future grades Below is an overview of the areas we will cover in Year 5:

Fractions of Quantities

Students will learn to calculate fractions of different quantities, helping them understand how fractions represent parts of a whole This includes practical applications such as dividing objects and amounts into shares.

Percentages

Building on their knowledge of fractions, Year 5 students will explore percentages as another way to express proportions They will learn to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and apply these skills in various contexts like financial literacy and data interpretation

Area and Perimeter

Students will consolidate their understanding of area and perimeter, learning to calculate these for various shapes This includes rectangles, squares, and compound shapes Practical activities will help students understand the relevance of these measurements in real-life situations, such as planning a garden layout or flooring a room

3D Shapes

Exploring three-dimensional shapes, students will identify and classify different types of 3D figures such as cubes, cylinders, and spheres They will learn about properties like faces, edges, and vertices, enhancing their spatial awareness

Tables and Graphs

Year 5 students will develop their ability to interpret and present data using tables and graphs Skills taught will include reading, analysing, and creating bar graphs, line graphs, and simple tables, which are essential for summarising and presenting information clearly.

Time and Timetables

We will focus on enhancing students' understanding of time, including reading clocks, understanding intervals, and calculating durations They will also learn to read and interpret timetables, an essential skill for everyday planning and organisation

These topics are designed not only to meet the curriculum standards but also to ensure that your child develops a solid foundation in mathematics, which is crucial for their academic success We encourage you to support your child at home by discussing these concepts and providing opportunities for them to apply these skills in everyday situations

In the summer term, the children will be taught outside in warm weather, and they will focus on cricket and athletics In cricket, they will learn how to field and scoop a ball up, throw and catch over varying distances with an under-arm and over-arm technique, bowl, hit a moving ball with control and play a modified competitive game The students will learn through practice from partners and group work. In the second half of the term, the students will compete in their houses for sports day at the end of June. In the lessons, we will practice sprints, relays, shot put throw, broad jump and long jump so that the students can perform at their best level There will be an emphasis on self-improvement and team support to build a culture of resilience and sportsmanship in line with our ethos at the Hampton Court House

PSHE

In the first half of the summer term, we will continue the topic entitled ‘Changing Me’, all about puberty and growing up

Once we have completed this topic, we will start our ‘Healthy me ’ topic. Children will explore ways to keep minds and bodies healthy and explore things to avoid and things to include we will discuss healthy eating and healthy choices, having a balanced diet and being physically active We will also look at how to be a good friend and finish with how to deal with difficult situations

Science

Science at HCH is about investigation and teaching children to think like scientists We attend the Science Laboratory to carry out experiments, whenever possible As technology has developed, it has allowed huge leaps in scientific understanding Science has a large social impact, as it is enabling people to live longer and travel further, as well as to become socially aware of the impact that people have on our planet and therefore do something about it At HCH not only do we teach the technical knowledge of science, but we also encourage the moral and social thinking behind the benefits it can bring to our global society and our planet

Pupils will be taught to:

Plan different types of experiments,

Identify what equipment is required for each experiment

Take measurements, using scientific equipment; e g measuring cylinder and scales

Record data and results in tables and bar and line graphs

Use test results to make predictions

Present findings and draw conclusions

We will be learning about Living things and their Habitats

The pupils will learn to understand that all animals and plants undergo life cycles involving birth, growth, and reproduction and that these differ between living organisms They will be able to explain the life cycles of some plants and animals and recognise that there are two types of reproduction, sexual and asexual

We will also be learning about Animals including Humans

Pupils will learn about the gestation periods of a variety of animals, including humans They will be able to describe the key stages and processes of human foetal development Through research they will be able to explore the key physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty in both boys and girls) and discuss the physical and mental changes to the human body as it ages They will explain with diagrams, the timeline of key events that occur in human life
