The annual welcome barbecue for the new class was held on Sunday, August 21. With almost 50 people in attendance, it was the most well attended in recent years. Residents and their families, faculty and staff enjoyed the camaraderie. Many thanks to Dr. Mark Vaughn and his wife, Dr. Rebecca Moazzez, for allowing the use of the community meeting room and grounds at their apartment complex, The Morgan in San Mateo. Dr. Richard R. Rutter, architect and first chairman of our post-graduate training program, celebrated his 90th birthday on October 8. He and his wife, Joanne, were in attendance at the “Celebration of Life” for Dr. Harry Hatasaka (another of the original 10 faculty) in August.

The 12th Annual Arthur A. Dugoni Graduation Symposium and Dinner was held on September 30. Dr. Larry Tadlock, head of the orthodontic department and program director at Texas A&M, spoke about common orthodontic concepts taught in school that need to be reviewed. Dentistry, and associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

The Western Orthodontic Conference, a combined meeting of the PCSO & RMSO, was held in San Diego October 27-30 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Our alumni reception took place on Friday, October 28.

Our next Frederick T. West Orthodontic Lectureship will be held in conjunction with the school’s 124th Annual Alumni Meeting February 24-25 at the Fairmont. The theme of the entire meeting is “Celebrating Women in Dentistry,” and accordingly, the speakers all meet that description! Dr. Audrey Yoon will be the Fred West speaker, presenting “The Orthodontist’s Role for Children with Sleep-Disordered Breathing — Growth Modification Protocol: From Infant to Adult for Patients with Sleep-Disordered Breathing.”

This year’s social event is being held at Spark Social SF in Mission Bay. Last year’s event drew around 35 attendees. There was great food, drink and camaraderie to be enjoyed as people gathered around the two fire pit areas that we reserved. This year, we have booked the Alcoves, a larger area that will accommodate everyone in one area. Our gathering is scheduled for Friday, March 17 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The event is open to all alumni, faculty and residents. Be on the lookout for an Evite.

Chicago’s McCormick Place is the venue for this year’s AAO Annual Session (April 21-24). Alumni receptions take place Saturday 6:45 pm - 8:45 pm at the Marriott Marquis immediately after the opening ceremonies. The AAO Celebration featuring RELAPSE (a music band of orthodontists) is happening Sunday 4:45 pm - 6:45 pm at the WinTrust Arena. Our former research director, Gene Roberts, will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award in Orthodontic Research, and Steve Dugoni will be giving the Jacob A. Salzmann Award Lecture.

Our 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, May 6, 2023 is coming up! Invitations were sent out in mid/late January with an RSVP deadline of March 10, 2023. If you didn’t receive your invitation, please reach out to us. I have been kind of a bridge between the older generation (the Rutter/Poulton era) and the new (Boyd/Oh era), and I feel it is time that a newer generation take the reins to lead our orthodontic chapter. Thus, I am stepping down from the orthodontic chapter at the end of October. I am extremely grateful that the Trident is in such good hands with our co-editors, Jennifer and Katherine; it has made me feel more at ease with my decision.

It has been an honor to serve as the custodian for our orthodontic chapter. I owe my deepest gratitude to all our committee members.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT

Dear orthodontic family, alumni, friends and colleagues:

In this season of renewal and new beginnings, I hope you’ve had a wonderful start to 2023.

It is an exciting milestone year in which we will be celebrating our orthodontic graduate program’s 50th anniversary. With a half-century history and legacy of excellence, we have much to be proud of. The 50th-anniversary celebration Planning Committee, led by Dr. Jetson Lee (’86), has been busy planning the Symposium and gala dinner festivities to make this a once-in-a-lifetime event that you will not want to miss. Please plan to join us for the celebration on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

First off, I would like to share a few highlights from the past year and exciting plans for the new year.

Faculty hire: I am delighted to report that Dr. Heeyeon Suh (’22) joined us as full-time faculty this past January. Before her residency program at Pacific, she completed a three-year orthodontic residency in 2013 and received a Ph.D. in statistics in 2015 at the Seoul National University School of Dentistry in Korea. Her research focused on predicting orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment outcomes using a sophisticated statistical method. She will be a great addition to our department and will bring extensive knowledge and experience in clinical research with her strong statistical background.

Sleep clinic and fellowship program: Collaborating with Stanford Sleep Medicine and ENT department’s sleep surgery teams, we launched a sleep clinic last year; we have examined and delivered mandibular advancement appliances to patients referred by sleep physicians at the Stanford sleep medicine clinic. This year, we will expand to creating an innovative year-long Dental Sleep Medicine Fellowship program designed to prepare orthodontists in the field of sleep medicine. We have accepted a sleep fellow who is an orthodontist to start the program this summer. Our residents and faculty will have excellent opportunities to learn an interdisciplinary team approach in treating sleep-related breathing disorders and conduct innovative clinical research in the dental sleep medicine field. I believe the field of dental sleep medicine is an area that directly impacts health, and orthodontists can play a vital role in treating this condition. Our orthodontic department will be a leader in the dental sleep medicine field by being at the forefront and creating opportunities to bolster our collaboration and partnership with Stanford sleep teams. In doing so, we will lead the future and advance our international reputation.

We successfully completed the CODA site visit in October 2022, along with the pre-doctoral, dental hygiene, endodontic and AEGD programs. The orthodontic program site visitor, Dr. Steward Kelton, commented on our program’s humanistic culture, positive learning environment and excellent integration of innovative technologies that enrich the resident’s clinical experiences. I want to thank everyone involved in the preparations for the onsite meetings for our CODA site visit. It was indeed a team effort. The next CODA site visit for accreditation will be held in 2029.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT

Increasing scholastic activities: It was another productive and successful year for our residents and faculty scholastic activities. Some of the publications in 2022 can be found on the Craniofacial Research Instrumentation Laboratory website. There continues to be an increased number of resident master’s theses that have been successfully published in peer-reviewed journals and recognized at national and regional orthodontic meetings. Three residents from the Class of 2022 (Gabrielle Wainwright, Daniel Voorhees, and Kyle Cuenin) won research awards at the AAO and PCSO last year. Dr. Jonas Bianchi and two other Class of 2022 graduates (Drs. Heeyeon Suh and Eric Le) were selected to present their research papers for the Oral Research Presentation at the 2023 AAO meeting in Chicago. In addition, many of our faculty members will feature their clinical and research presentations at the AAO this year. I am also delighted to share the great news about Dr. Steve Dugoni (’81) being the 2023 Salzmann award recipient. He will present the Jacob A. Salzmann’s Lecture on early treatment at the AAO meeting in Chicago. I hope everyone joins us to celebrate Dr. Steve Dugoni’s lifetime achievement and service to our specialty.

Orthodontic Resident Scholarship Fundraising Campaign: As we celebrate our program’s 50th anniversary, we continue to focus on our scholarship fundraising campaign to address the pressing issue of high tuition for the residents. Since Drs. Art Dugoni and Robert Boyd’s orthodontic scholarships funds were launched, we have raised $1.4 million. As a result, we have been able to provide small scholarships to each resident in the Classes of 2023 and 2024. I sincerely appreciate our alums and friends for their philanthropic generosity and support in helping our future orthodontists. Our goal is to achieve our dream of providing our exceptional orthodontic residency program tuition-free. Our immediate goal is to build up a large enough endowment to reduce tuition to less than half the current cost. Please visit dentalgifts.org if you would like to support our scholarship fundraising campaign.

I eagerly look forward to another successful year in 2023. It remains an honor and privilege to serve as the chair of the orthodontic department. While our program has grown tremendously in the past 50 years, this is just the beginning. Our 50th Anniversary Celebration will strengthen the bonds with our alums and encourage their continued support. As we honor our past and celebrate our future, we look forward to what the next 50 years will bring. Together, we will make this year one of great growth and achievement for our department and orthodontic family.

Thank you.

I wish you and your family happiness and continued success!

Yours cordially,

keeping in touch with the class of 2013

It’s been an amazing journey these last 10 years. I went from being a new grad, a new dad and starting an office from scratch in 2013, to a father of two, Mateen (9) and Mazi (5), with a rock-star wife and enjoying a very blessed life in my hometown.

After graduation, I worked part time as an associate while I began to plan and build out my office. I moved back to my hometown of San Ramon, CA and officially set up shop in 2014. It has been a fun grind getting the practice to where it is today, and I look forward to the next ten years. I hope to spend a little more time with family and to enjoy the kids as they grow up. In the time between family and patients, I enjoy playing as much golf as humanly possible and playing basketball recreationally in a men’s league. I recently turned 40, and look forward to the next 40 :)

It’s hard to believe it’s already been 10 years! Since graduating, I relocated back to Las Vegas where I grew up and purchased my practice, Mountain View Orthodontics, in 2015. My wife, a pediatric dentist, will be joining the practice this year as we expand and offer pediatric dental care along with orthodontics. When not practicing ortho, I enjoy working out, traveling and spending time with my family. My wife and I will be celebrating 10 years of marriage this year! We have two energetic kids who keep us busy and bring us a lot of joy and laughter. I’ve loved being able to keep in touch with my co-residents over the past 10 years, and I look forward to reuniting this year at the 50th anniversary celebration.

Class of 2013 (cont.)

Well, what I have been up to professionally since graduation…

I bought Dr Roger Boero’s practice in Marin County a year after graduation and then Dr. Robert Griffin’s practice two years later. I got quite lucky that I was in the right place at the right time—I hope behaving at school also helped with it, since they were both my teachers…lol.

Running your own practice has its ups and downs. Overall, I have to say it’s been a wonderful ride. I also see orthodontic patients at my wife’s office in Sonoma; she is a general dentist. I was blessed with wonderful classmates at the Dugoni School. We are still in touch and have this group chat that we use to share ideas about orthodontics and other things. It is very neat.

Personally, I have been married for 15 years now. I met my wife at dental school. We had our first kid four years ago. It was a life changer. Coming home tired from work and lying on the couch has changed to coming home and playing hard core with an energetic boy. It is joyful.

I try to spend as much time as I can with family and hit the gym when I find time. We love to travel when we can to see different places. We go to the city often for a walk and to try foods at different restaurants. Once in a while, I check out Pacific Heights and the area around where the dental school used to be. It certainly brings back great memories.

Growing up in the Bay Area, I always knew I wanted to stay local. During my last year of residency at the Dugoni School, I was lucky enough to visit Dr. Gibbs’ famous practice in Burlingame. Dr. Gibbs was an amazing faculty member at University of the Pacific for over 40 years, known for his legendary wire bending (“Gibby loops”), Friday seminars, and being a stand-up person. After a few conversations, we discussed the possibility of buying his practice after graduation. It was a hectic time with getting married, graduating residency, going on a honeymoon, and buying the practice all within a few weeks. It felt a bit early at the time, but with the guidance of Dr. Gibbs and other faculty mentors, I felt comfortable making the leap. Now looking back almost 10 years, it was clearly the right decision.

My wife, Naomi, opened a pediatric dentistry office in Burlingame three years ago with a close dental classmate of ours. It has been an exciting journey watching their office grow. The first years are the most stressful and uncertain, but I do believe those are the most exciting, rewarding and educational years. Naomi and I now live in Burlingame and have 2 kids, Ethan (5) and Kayla (1).

I can’t thank Dr. Boyd, Dr. Oh, Dr. Gibbs, and everyone at the Dugoni School enough for helping us get to where we are today. And to our Class of 2013, I am thankful for our time together at the dental school! Those 2.25 years were some of the most memorable and impactful years of my life. I enjoy our continued group chat, where we are still very active on. Cheers!

Ten years have gone by too fast! The Ortho Class of 2013 was the greatest of all time, and I wish I could do it all over again. Love that our class all still keep in touch and have such a strong bond. It speaks to the amazing environment that has been created and fostered at the Dugoni School, the irreplaceable faculty, and all the alumni that continue to stay connected and give back to the school.

Happy to report all is well. I went to work with the best mentor you could find in Dr. Bert Rouleau. Working with him over the last 10 years has taught me so much, and we still learn from each other and enjoy our time together. It has been a blessing. I have now purchased the office from him in Mountain View, but I won’t accept his resignation—he is stuck for now :) We are keeping the Dugoni School tradition alive here and are happy to have Dr. Adrienne Joy and Dr. Bianca Lau working as associates with me.

My wife Dana and I have three children now: Charlotte (7), Everett (5) and Theodore (2). We live in Los Gatos, CA and are enjoying a beautiful life.

Second-Year Residents’ Report

As the Class of 2023, we are amazed that our graduation year is already here. It does not seem too long ago that we were just writing the first-year recap for Trident. While graduation seems right around the corner, these next few quarters will be our busiest ones yet!

Since our last update, we have delved into Dr. Boero’s Principles of Orthodontics course with weekly readings surrounding fundamental orthodontic concepts, Dr. Yau’s American Board of Orthodontics course where we have begun preparing for the ABO exam that will take place in April, and Dr. Vaughan’s multidisciplinary seminars where we attend lectures delivered by various specialists, such as periodontists and endodontists.

In addition to the coursework, we all have spent many hours on our research projects for our masters theses. The projects we are conducting this year include several Invisalign®-related investigations (Invisalign®, First, Sequential Distalization, Biomarkers in GCF), as well as a wide range of other topics including Class II subdivision treatments, naso-alveolar molding for cleft lip and palate patients, and more.

Clinically, it has been exciting to debond more cases, both those that were transferred and some that we started ourselves almost two years ago. We also have started to complete our final case analyses on our debonded cases, which have shown us that treatment reflection offers an incredibly valuable learning perspective.

In the coming months, there are several exciting trips and events that we have the opportunity to attend. In January, we will be participating ™in the Invisalign® Clear Aligner Advanced Residency Education (CAARE) conference in Los Angeles, followed by a trip down to Big Sur for the Dugoni School’s Asilomar weekend tradition. We will also attend the Fred West lecture at the

Alumni Weekend, and we plan to attend our last AAO Annual Conference as residents in Chicago this April.

We know that we have a lot of work ahead of us, but with the support of our colleagues and faculty, we are positive that we will succeed! Our class has grown together through the challenges and triumphs of residency, and we will continue to lean on each other to complete the rigorous months ahead. For our class, 2023 is a year in which one chapter will close and the next will open, but we know that we will always be a part of the Dugoni family and look forward to transitioning into the orthodontic profession.

FIRST-Year Residents’ Report

Greetings from the Class of 2024! We have been having an absolute blast at our dream residency! Though the stream of information has quickly turned into roaring rapids, we’ve managed to keep our humble raft afloat. The past six months have sailed by as we attempt to learn orthodontics by osmosis: navigating through classes and seminars, treating patients in clinic, muddling through bracket prescriptions and wire sequences, and celebrating a number of baby showers the best way we know how: with plenty of sweets. Here’s a highlight of what we’ve been up to these past few months!

This year, GORP took place at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor! We had so much fun exploring such a historic city. Between informative lectures, we mingled with residents from other schools and were introduced to the crazy world of ortho vendors. We were blessed to have the best tour guides in the world as Yash and Seung ah completed their undergraduate studies in Michigan. Despite the heat and humidity, we enjoyed an action-packed walking tour through the campus and surrounding downtown area: admiring the stained glass windows in the campus library; reveling in the greenery and foliage, a stark contrast to the inner city cement jungle we call home; and pizza. Lots and lots of pizza. This amazing experience strengthened the bonds within our class and with our lovely resident big siblings who took us under their wings and continue to light our way through residency.

In October, we had the pleasure of hosting candidates for the orthodontic Class of 2025. We organized some games and trivia to introduce them to the residents, followed by an in-person interview on campus the following day. All of us are very excited to welcome the incoming class into our program this July.

We also had the chance to travel to San Diego this year for the annual PCSO conference, now recognized as WOCON. Amidst attending lectures by some of the most renowned orthodontists including some of our own faculty, we also had the pleasure of watching some of our recently graduated residents present and win the first and second place awards for their research that they conducted while in residency. We would like to thank all who donated to the Arthur A. Dugoni Orthodontic Endowed Scholarship Fund for sponsoring us and giving us the opportunity to attend such an amazing conference. Most recently, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in a regional Angle Society Meeting at the scenic Castlewood Country Club. Speaking with some of the nation’s best orthodontists, we were filled with pride to see how many dental school alumni were in attendance. In addition, we were overjoyed and bursting with pride to be able to support Dr. Bianchi who presented on his treatment philosophy. He impressed the members with the high standard of care upheld at the Dugoni School as well as the routine use of cutting-edge technology during treatment planning and the delivery of patient care.

Dr. Christopher Oviedo earned his DDS degree from University of Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2009. He went on to serve as a Dental Officer in the United States Navy for three years and spent nearly five months on the ground in Afghanistan during that time. After satisfying his obligation with the Navy, “Chris” entered residency at the University of Southern California in 2012 and earned a certificate in orthodontics and master of science in craniofacial biology. Upon graduation, he worked in the South Bay Area and Monterey County for four years and was able to complete his final case to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. In January 2020, he purchased an orthodontic practice in San Francisco, formerly owned by the dental school’s own Dr. Jetson Lee.

Dr. Oviedo enjoys a wide range of topics essential to quality orthodontic treatment. He was especially interested to learn about mixed-dentition treatment at the Dugoni School, which he employs in his practice. Otherwise, he is interested in incorporating systems in his practice that are both precise and efficient. Many of these systems integrate digital technologies with indirect methods of delivery. He also has a special interest in skeletal anchorage and has attended meetings regarding this topic on four continents.

Dr. Oviedo enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with the residents and encourages them to think about orthodontic concepts and rationale for treatment. “Dr. O,” not to be confused with our amazing department chair, is committed to lifelong learning and recently joined the Pacific Orthodontic Research Group (PORG). Dr. O’s father was also a dedicated orthodontist and inspired Chris to join the profession, which he feels fortunate to be a part of.

Dr. Heeyeon Suh earned her DDS from Seoul National University School of Dentistry in Korea in 2009. She subsequently completed specialty training in orthodontics and earned a PhD at the same institution in 2015. Her PhD research focused on predicting soft-tissue profile change after orthognathic surgery using a sophisticated statistical method, resulting in two first-author publications. She also completed her orthodontic training at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2022. Her research project during residency was about open-bite treatment with clear aligners, which was published and presented at multiple conferences.

Dr. Suh worked as a part-time research faculty in the University of the Pacific orthodontic department, helping dental students, residents and faculty with her data analysis and presentation skills. She is passionate about utilizing novel statistical methods and machine learning to predict and evaluate orthodontic treatment outcomes. She has been focusing on answering questions regarding soft tissue changes after surgical-orthodontic treatment, treatment effect of maxillary expanders, growth prediction and tooth movement with clear aligners.
