COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT By Dr. Jetson Lee, Class of 1986 Welcome to another issue of Trident! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and wish everyone a productive 2020. In late August, the department hosted its annual welcome picnic/BBQ at Hellman Hollow in Golden Gate Park for the Class of 2021. Although we had a typical San Francisco summer day (overcast and cool), there was plenty of food, drink and camaraderie to go around. TRIDENT PACIFIC ORTHODONTIC ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT By Dr. Heesoo Oh, Class of 2005 Dear Alumni: Happy New Year! I am confident that 2020 will be another exciting year for all of us. Since my first Trident letter last year, I’m proud to say we’re well on our way to addressing several of the challenges and opportunities that were previously mentioned. I want to briefly highlight the progress we have made this past year and what we will be working on in 2020 to prepare for the accreditation site visit in 2021. Faculty hiring: We have developed a faculty-hiring plan designed to enhance new educational resources for residents, strengthen interdisciplinary approach, and expand research and scholastic activities. Although it is still in progress, I am happy to report that we have hired four exceptional faculty members and appointed four adjunct faculty: o

Dr. Joorok Park (UOP ’08) has been doing a wonderful job as our new Clinic Director since May. We also welcomed a full-time faculty member, Dr. James Chen (UCSF ’12) who has a strong clinical research background with his PhD, clinical research training from UCSF, and MPH in Health Policy Concentration from UC Berkeley. In addition, Drs. Olivia Yue (NYU ’18) and Marta Baird (UOP ’11) joined as part-time faculty. Dr. Yue was trained as a craniofacial orthodontist and will teach our “Management of Craniofacial Anomalies” course. Dr. Baird will be directing the pre-doctoral Wednesday night clinic, while continuing to cover our Wednesday afternoon clinic.

o Three internationally renowned experts also joined our department. Drs. Sandra Tai (Minnesota ’90) and Bella Shen Garnett (Harvard ’04) will be teaching our “Clear Aligners” course, and Dr. Audrey Yoon (UCLA ’08) will be teaching our “Dental Sleep Medicine” course. o In addition, two graduates from the Class of 2019 joined as faculty: Dr. Kevin Shimizu (’19; Typodont) and Dr. Ana Calles (’19 Pre-doc Invisalign clinic). o We are still in the process of recruiting another full-time faculty member and are excited about what they will bring into our department. Faculty development program: We are working on creating more effective ongoing professional development plans for not only full-time faculty, but also part-time and clinic faculty. The professional development programs will not only uphold our academic rigor and clinical excellence, but will also serve as a faculty calibration program for sharing new evidence, emerging technology, and the latest techniques in orthodontics. o We will extend a special invite and provide CE credits to all clinic faculty for various guest lectures and workshops in our department. The first events will be Dr. Sandra Tai’s clear aligner course and Dr. Hwang’s mini-tube course (additional information will be provided soon). o Under the direction of Dr. Park, we are also preparing two workshops for faculty this year that will focus on current topics, such as microimplant-assisted RPE and designing digital workflow in orthodontic practice. I hope that many of our faculty members will participate in the courses.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT’D) Restructuring the curriculum to prepare for the future: We need to objectively evaluate course content and the timing of its delivery, which I plan to more deliberately focus on this year. The curriculum committee will carefully evaluate the many aspects of our program and work with our course directors to implement necessary changes. We will gather more extensive and constructive feedback from our residents, faculty and alumni to identify the strengths and weaknesses of our curriculum. I believe that by recruiting faculty from different institutions and various backgrounds, we will gain fresh perspectives that will help us develop interdisciplinary and interprofessional activities for our curriculum. This will help us prepare for the CODA site visit in 2021. We have also started redesigning the pre-doctoral orthodontic curriculum, as well as creating a program that pairs pre-doc students with orthodontic residents. Dr. James Chen will serve as the pre-doc director, working to implement positive changes that will increase collaboration to benefit both pre-doc students and our residents. Pursuit of clinical excellence: Under the leadership of Dr. Park, many new positive changes, policies and systems for improving our clinical operation have been implemented with support from our clinic staff and faculty. A few changes are as follows: o Treatment plan PPT template is used for every new case analysis and progress report o SharePoint for sharing patient diagnostic records and communicating with clinic faculty for treatment planning in compliance with HIPPA regulation o Systematic follow-up and outcome assessment via the resident’s final case analysis for every finished patient and reviewing the results with faculty o Implementing a new patient exam in the Pediatric clinic to reduce multiple visits before starting treatment and to build strong collaborative patient care between the two departments. These changes will help produce the best possible clinical outcome for our patients, while maximizing our resident learning experience and supporting successful ABO certification. We are fortunate to have six ABO examiners in our department (Drs. Steven Dugoni, William Cole, Rebecca Keller, Paul Kasrovi, Brian Payne and myself). We will carefully review the exam result reports and prepare our residents through case seminars and a mock exam. I am very proud of our recent graduates from the Class of 2018. Six of them became board certified orthodontists (four from the new scenario-based clinical exam). Increasing scholastic activities: A newly formed research committee led by Dr. Dave Chambers (committee chair) will play an important role in raising our departmental scholastic activities and assisting the residents’ research projects for their Master’s theses. We encourage and support faculty and residents to apply for presentations at orthodontic research meetings and to seek extramural grant funding. We will periodically share news regarding journal publications, presentations, awards and grants. Our department will be well represented at the upcoming AAO meeting in Atlanta: Dr. Steve Dugoni’s Edward Angle lecture, myself and Tim Yu, a second-year resident who will be making an oral research presentation.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT’D) Improving Communication: We started implementing changes to improve communication and create a better sense of community in the department and with alumni. o

Departmental faculty meeting: We had two productive faculty meetings in April and November 2019 that were both attended by more than 20 faculty members. The new faculty members shared their professional and personal lives and discussed their research interests and visions for our school. We plan to continue to have two faculty meetings per year. This will be a great opportunity for faculty who come only certain clinic days to get to know one another and to collaboratively share departmental matters and give constructive feedback for the program.

o

Graduate program’s 50th anniversary in May 2021: As mentioned elsewhere, a planning committee was formed, chaired by Dr. Jetson Lee, to prepare for the celebration that will mark the program’s half-century anniversary. The committee will also focus on strengthening our alumni network. It will certainly be an opportunity to bring everyone together to create a greater sense of connection.

o With the increased use of social media in today’s world, we created a Dugoni orthodontic department Instagram account orthoinstagram and Facebook pages for department activities orthofacebook and case discussion orthofacebookgroups. I hope that these platforms will give us a greater opportunity to engage and interact with all alumni, residents, faculty, and staff. I would like to thank Dr. Joorok Park for his efforts in creating these social media sites and updating them. o Dr. Park has also revived our long tradition of a Friday seminar, which was originally started by Friday afternoon clinic faculty Drs. Gibbs and Picard. I hope many alumni and faculty will join us. Scholarship fundraising: We are pleased to report that the orthodontic general endowment that was created by Dr. Art Dugoni to help support orthodontic resident scholarships in 2016 now has $650,000 and the Robert Boyd Scholarship Endowment has $135,000, to which contributions continue to be made. I want to thank the many alumni who have contributed to the scholarship endowments. While we are preparing for our program’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2021, I hope that we can generate a collective interest among alumni to raise funds for student scholarships in the future. Dr. Art Dugoni will continue to play an instrumental role in furthering this cause, and I am fully committed to working closely with him to achieve this worthy goal in the near future. In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your endless support and encouragement during my first year as the Department Chair. We have taken the first steps in improving many areas, but they still need to be revised, reinforced, and solidified along the way. I will continue to listen to your valuable input, gather feedback and strive to make informed decisions that elevate the future of the department. Thank you for being an integral member of our orthodontic community. I am excited for 2020 and all of the positive changes that it will bring! Yours cordially, Heesoo Oh
