COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT By Dr. Jetson Lee, Class of 1986
With more vaccinations, we are starting to see an end to the pandemic which has wreaked so much havoc for the past year and a half. The school has been especially proactive with vaccination clinics for student, faculty and staff. Vaccines were also administered to first responders and underserved communities, including people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As eligibility increased, we were able to vaccinate more and more of the population, including children ages 12 and up. In this effort, we partnered with the San Francisco Mayor’s Office on Disability and the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

I am extremely proud of our department’s volunteers during these clinics. We were well represented by Drs. Maryse Aubert, William Cole, Heesoo Oh, Jetson Lee, Marie Tolarova, Mirek Tolar and Mana Naeim. In the spirit of Ohana, Dr. Cole’s daughters Beth, an RN and Emily, an MD participated in some of the clinics. I brought my daughter Samantha, PharmD (UOP ’17) to another clinic.

A story about our clinics was recently featured in the Bulletin of Dental Education. With the rise in cases involving the more contagious and virulent Delta variant, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to stop this pandemic. Without our current technological advances and vaccines, I am certain we would have been worse off than we were during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic which infected a third of the world’s population at the time.

COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT’D) This year’s AAO Annual Session was held in Boston June 25-27, rescheduled from late April. It was held virtually due to local restrictions on large gatherings. Due to complications with the State of Hawaii, next year’s Annual Session originally scheduled to be held in Honolulu has been moved to Miami Beach and will take place May 21-24, 2022. Registration opens in the fall of 2021. After two years of all-virtual sessions, members will be itching to gather again! The PCSO Annual Session (Western Orthodontic Conference, a combined meeting with the RMSO) is scheduled in Portland, OR October 21-24 as a virtual and in-person event. The theme of this year’s meeting is Building Bridges. The Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center will be the headquarters hotel. Alumni receptions are scheduled for Friday from 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm. The closing celebration “A Night at the Museum” will be held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. An evening under the stars at this worldclass planetarium will offer attendees a DJ, dancing, exhibits, food, photo booth and fun for all. The 11th Annual Arthur A. Dugoni Graduation Symposium and Dinner is scheduled for Friday, September 17. Dr. Laura Iwasaki, chair at Oregon Health Sciences University, will be this year’s speaker. Next year’s Frederick T. Lectureship speaker is Dr. Martin Palomo, director of orthodontics at Case Western Reserve. The lecture is scheduled during the Annual Alumni meeting weekend, March 4-5, 2022 and will tentatively be held at the historic Fairmont Hotel. Planning for the 50th Anniversary Celebration continues. It has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 6, 2023 to coincide with the graduation of the first class. We anticipate a continuing education event during the day with break-out sessions for class reunions and tours of the school (for those who graduated from 2155 Webster) followed by a dinner and celebration at a nearby venue. Many former faculty and staff will be invited back for the celebration. Class representatives report that there is significant interest in the event and we anticipate about 200-300 attendees for dinner. SAVE THE DATE! Editor’s Note: This will be my last Trident. I have tried to live up to the standards set by Editor Emeritus Richard R. Rutter. After 10 years at this post, I have decided to step down and give someone else an opportunity to bring our newsletter to a new level. I have been privileged to work with a great team including the newsletter contributors, Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications Dan Soine and our wonderfully talented Design Team. I have enjoyed my tenure as editor. A search is underway to find a replacement. The ideal candidate would be someone who cares about the alumni association, has some sense of our history and is committed. We are looking for someone to step up and say, as the lyrics from the John Fogerty song Centerfield vocalize, “Put me in, Coach — I’m ready to play today.” Anyone interested can contact me at orthojet@aol.com. I will continue to be the Committee Chair “holding down the fort” for Dr. Kimberly Mahood until she completes her duties with the dental school’s Alumni Board.

CLINIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT by Joorok Park, Class of 2008
Dear Alumni and Friends, The 2020-2021 academic year was a tough year for the department, especially during the winter when Covid-19 cases surged. I am proud of our residents, staff, and faculty for working together to overcome the many challenges brought on by the pandemic. We adapted to frequent changes of class and clinic schedules, embraced distance learning and maintained a healthy and safe clinic environment for the patients. I thank our department chair, Dr. Heesoo Oh, for her strong and caring leadership. Since the clinic resumed in June 2020, the Class of 2021 has worked extremely hard to make commendable progress on their clinical cases, finishing many of them on time with excellent treatment outcomes. Everyone in the Class of 2021 successfully passed the written part of ABO exam with outstanding results, and will be ready to take the scenario-based clinical exam next year. Furthermore, all nine members of the Class of 2020 became ABO Diplomates in April. Although the Class of 2022 started their program at the beginning of the pandemic, they made their clinical experience exceptionally productive. We welcomed the Class of 2023 (in person), and for the first time in the 50 years of our orthodontic residency program, we have an all-female class. The university recently mandated vaccination of all staff, residents and faculty when the new quarter started in July. All members of the orthodontics department are fully vaccinated, and in-person classes finally resumed this quarter after more than a year of virtual classes. Some courses will maintain the online format while many courses will transition to a hybrid format to maximize the effectiveness of both types of teaching methods. Dr. Oh recently remodeled the residents’ room during the summer break — the metal lockers were replaced by additional desks and computers, including eight new high-performance computers for the Class of 2023. Many faculty members of the Orthodontics department participated in a day-long retreat at the dental school on Saturday, August 7, 2021. We completed the self-study phase and prepared for the accreditation site visits by the Commission on Dental Accreditation in 2022. Lastly, the dental school is celebrating its 125th anniversary of our founding (College of Physicians and Surgeons) in San Francisco in 1896. You will see this theme highlighted in various events and communications throughout the year.

INTRODUCING THE CLASS OF 2023 Valerie Hernandez-Blouin Valerie was born and raised in San Diego, CA. She graduated from the University of Southern California in 2017, earning her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Valerie continued her passion for helping others at USC where she received her DDS degree. As a dental student, she volunteered both locally and abroad in non-traditional clinic settings with USC’s Mobile Clinic and the Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program. In her free time Valerie enjoys baking, exercising and exploring San Francisco. She is excited to continue her education at UOP and honored to join the Dugoni family. Young Eun (Stephanie) Jung Stephanie was born in Busan, South Korea and was raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. She enrolled in the University of Witwatersrand School of Dentistry (in Johannesburg) briefly before deciding to rather finish her dental studies (DDS) at Seoul National University. Following dental school, she completed an Oral & Maxillofacial surgery residency at Seoul National University receiving her MSD. She loves dentistry and is always trying to expand the scope of her clinical skills. She is grateful that she has been given this opportunity at Pacific, pursuing orthodontics which she had always wanted to study. Stephanie loves traveling, learning and having new experiences. This led her to acquire a few non-dental certifications; her most recent accomplishment is becoming a certified sommelier (WSET II), which she thinks is perfect for the Bay Area! Yidi Liu Yidi was born and raised in Beijing, China. After finishing her dental education and pedodontic residency at the Peking University School of Stomotology, she moved to the United States with her family and went on to obtain her DDS at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2021. Yidi is the first dentist in her family and extremely excited to continue pursuing her orthodontic career at Dugoni within the first all-female class of orthodontic residents in the program’s history. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends exploring new restaurants in town, planning road trips and playing video games. Jaime Kika Masunaga Kika was born and raised in Honolulu, HI. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2017, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Public Health. She went on to obtain her DDS at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. During her time in dental school, she was highly involved in her school’s chapter of ASDA and pursued research in bone biology. In her free time, she enjoys running, playing spikeball, and going to the beach. Kika is honored to join the Dugoni family and is excited to follow her grandfather and father’s footsteps as a thirdgeneration orthodontist.

INTRODUCING THE CLASS OF 2023 (CONT’D) Stacey Moon Stacey is from Chicago and South Korea. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame and her DDS degree from UCSF, where she conducted research in craniofacial development and volunteered on medical mission trips to Haiti. After dental school, she completed a fellowship in underserved dentistry at the UCSD Free Dental Clinics where she also volunteered in Mexico and with the US Navy. During this time, she served as community faculty for the UCSD School of Medicine as well as adjunct faculty for the College of Dental Medicine at Roseman University of Health Sciences. She returned to the Bay Area to be with her nowhusband and completed a hospital-based general practice residency at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto. Stacey is fluent in English, Korean, and Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking and spending time with her two daughters. Parisa Moravedje Torbaty Born and raised in Southern California, Parisa received her BS in Psychobiology from UCLA, with a minor in Iranian Studies. She then moved up the coast to San Francisco, where she attended dental school at UCSF and business school at USF. She is so excited to continue her journey in San Francisco by joining the Pacific family. In her free time, Parisa loves traveling and being with her loved ones.
Nina Khanna Stevens Nina was born and raised in Palm Springs, California. She completed her undergraduate studies at Pepperdine University where she studied abroad in London and Fiji. She is passionate about providing ethical care to all patients and furthered her studies by obtaining a Masters in Bioethics concurrently with her DDS from Loma Linda University in Southern California. After graduating dental school, Nina got married in June of 2021. She is excited and honored to be a part of the UOP family. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and family.
Yoon Weon (Christina) Suh Christina was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She came to the United States to attend the 7-year accelerated BA/DDS program at New York University, where she received a bachelor of science in biology at the College of Arts and Science and a DDS from the College of Dentistry in 2021. Christina moved here to pursue her dream of becoming an orthodontist at UOP. Her interests include video editing and dancing, but most of all, she loves trying out new food. She is excited to explore the Bay Area for some good dessert!

CLASS OF 2022 UPDATE By Dr. Bianca Lau
As second years, the Class of 2022 is excited to spend more time in clinic and to transition back to in-person classes! We are grateful that we were able to take all the first-year courses virtually and attend guest lectures on Zoom. We mastered virtual new patient consultations and had the privilege of starting just as many new cases as the previous classes despite the pandemic. We are now collaborating with the third years on transfer cases in order to provide our patients with the best clinical care. We will also be going to our first in-person conference, GORP (which stands for Graduate Orthodontic Residents Program), in St. Louis, Missouri. Although the pandemic limited social activities, the Class of 2022 still bonded through small outdoor gatherings. Completing the first year of residency during a pandemic has brought us closer! We hope that this new year will bring more social events and opportunities to network with residents from other programs as well.

CLASS OF 2021 PLANS AFTER GRADUATION Laurie Chew I am hoping to work in a private practice in the Bay Area as an associate. Ali Ghowsi I hope to work as an associate practicing in either California or Virginia. I hope to know soon. Vikas Gupta I will be moving to Dallas, Texas to work as an associate at my older brother’s (Dr. Deepak Gupta) private practice, Gupta Orthodontics. Taekeong (Cindy) Kim I am planning to work as an associate in Washington State. I have a great passion for orthodontics and am ready to provide optimum care for my patients. Mahsa Mortazavi As I am very interested in teaching and research, my plan after graduation is to work as faculty and stay in academia. I would like to participate both in clinical teaching and in research projects. My long-term plan is to work in private practice while continuing a part-time faculty position. Mana Naeim I plan on moving back to Southern California where I hope to become an associate at a private practice. I also look forward to marrying my fiancé Cyrus and starting our life together. Jacqueline Payne I plan to join my father, Dr. Brian Payne, in our Santa Rosa, CA practice. I am excited to begin in this amazing profession and follow in both my grandfather and father’s footsteps. Micaela Zaverdinos I plan on working as an associate in the San Diego area.

OUR RESIDENCY TURNS FIFTY By Dr. Jetson Lee, Class of ’86
In 1970, then-Dean Dale Redig asked Dr. Richard Rutter, Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics to put together a faculty for a post-graduate training program in Orthodontics. Drs. Vincent Lombardi, William Odom, Robert Tacy, Owen Nichols and Harry Scott were tasked to assist Dr. Rutter in creating the structure for a 21-month program. Along with the original committee, Drs. Art Dugoni, Mel Walters, James Thurston and Harry Hatasaka made up the original ten faculty who came from renowned programs including Columbia, University of Oregon, University of Washington, Indiana, and Harvard. The first class of four residents started in September of 1971. Class size increased to five in 1981, six in 1998 and eight in 2005. Although research and a thesis was required to graduate, a master of science in dentistry degree was not awarded until the Class of 1981. A program was eventually developed to allow previous classes to earn the degree. Of the 30 that were eligible, seven completed the requirements and were awarded the degree. The program was also increased to 24 months because of university guidelines for awarding a degree, Currently, our program lasts 27 months. In 1982, Dr. Donald Poulton became the department chairman. Don was to become the president of the American Association of Orthodontists in 1998 and decided to step down due to increasing demands on his time. So in 1996, Dr. Robert Boyd became the third chairman. After 21 years of service, Bob retired and Dr. Heesoo Oh ’05 assumed the position of chair in 2019, the first woman and the first of our graduates to become Chair of the post-graduate program (Dr. Elizabeth Richardson was the world’s first woman to serve as a department chair in orthodontics when she organized the department at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the precursor of UOP in 1915). The 25th anniversary of the program was celebrated in 1996 at the Carnelian Room in the Bank of America building. The 50th Anniversary Celebration was originally scheduled for May 15 this year, but the pandemic has forced us to reschedule the event to May 6, 2023. Our Planning Committee felt that it would coincide with the graduation of our first class, give us time to put the pandemic in our rear-view mirror and perhaps make people feel more comfortable about attending. We envision a continuing education program during the day with a speaker line up of graduates with expertise in specific areas such as Invisalign®, Damon, TADSs, early treatment, 3D imaging, 3D printing and more. There will be breakout sessions for class reunions and tours of the school (for those who graduated from 2155 Webster). The day will conclude with a dinner and celebration at a nearby venue. Based on responses from designated class representatives, we are anticipating between 200-300 people (alumni, significant others, residents, faculty and staff including former faculty and staff). More details will follow as plans are finalized. Having witnessed most of the 50 years of our program, understanding its strong tradition, and seeing how it has flourished makes me extremely proud to have graduated from our program.

Class of 1991, the 30th Anniversary class! Our class has made a donation to name the Orthodontic Clinic Director’s Office in honor of our classmate Steven Markowitz. Steve passed on September 23, 2016 after an eight-year battle with cancer. Charlene Chan lives in Marin County with her husband Ken. She continues to practice in Sebastopol and is also a proud mom of a teenage son. Brian Grey is the country orthodontist of the group. He lives in Lake County and has a practice in Lakeport. Brian looks forward to returning regularly to UOP soon to take the residents to a local pub for Friday “seminars”. Heng-Shen Lin and his wife Li Ping live in the south bay. They have a grown son and daughter. Heng-Shen practices in Cupertino. In addition to private practice, he teaches early orthodontics in the pediatric clinic at UCSF. ‘Hank’ also travels and teaches orthodontics at universities in China a few times a year. Allen Mau lives in Stockton and practices in Lodi. You might also see First Officer Mau on a regional jet. When he is not straightening teeth, Allen is a pilot for SkyWest Airlines.
