COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT By Dr. Jetson Lee, Class of 1986 Welcome to another exciting issue of our chapter newsletter! Along with being Editor, I am back as custodian of our organization while Dr. Kimberly Mahood begins her three-year term on the school’s Alumni Association board.

After over 20 years of service to the University of Chairman of our Department, Dr. Robert Boyd has decided to step down after the Class of 2017 officially graduates in September. He will continue to be active in the clinic as well as in the classroom. Bob will expand more on his decision in his report. The 31st Annual Frederick T. West Lectureship was held on Friday, March 3rd in conjunction with the 118th Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association. The West Lecture was a symposium on Accelerating Orthodontic Treatment with Drs. Stefanos Kyrkanides, Hyeon-Shik Hwang, David Paquette, Bella Shen Garnett, and Stuart Frost, who spoke about how they utilize different modalities to accelerate treatment in their practices.

The Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists was held in San Diego, California. The locale and weather was wonderful. The department hosted our alumni reception on the evening of April 22nd at the San Diego Marriott Marquis immediately after the opening ceremonies at the San Diego Convention Center. This reception was well attended with between 40 and 50 people stopping by throughout the evening. Drs. Steven Dugoni and Heesoo Oh were speakers at the meeting on Comprehensive Mixed Dentition Treatment.

Your alumni chapter hosted an alumni-resident mixer on Friday, June 9th. We met at The Yard at Mission Rock just outside AT&T Park for happy hour before going into the park to watch the game between the Giants and the Minnesota Twins. The weather was cool, but not uncomfortable and all had a good time!

On Saturday, July 29th, Dr. Boyd hosted the Annual Welcome BBQ at his beautiful home in Tiburon. It was a spectacular day and the food was wonderful as faculty and residents welcomed the Class of 2019, which had just started the program in early July. Everyone had a good time!

COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT’D) The 7th Annual Arthur A. Dugoni Orthodontic Graduation Symposium and Dinner will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017. The speaker will be Dr. Peter Ngan, the chair from West Virginia University. His presentation entitled “Contemporary Treatment of Class III Problems” will address the strategies in treatment of four types of Class III patients: functional low angle, skeletal low angle, functional high angle, and skeletal high angle cases. The symposium will include the graduating class of residents giving presentations on their research.
Dr. Peter Ngan The day will conclude with a wonderful reception and dinner at the City Club of San Francisco. With stunning city views and one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the state, the City Club offers a one-of-a-kind setting. The 81st Annual Session of the PCSO will be held this year at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center from October 11-15, 2017 with the theme “Elevating to New Heights”. The host hotel is the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa adjacent to the Convention Center. Enjoy an evening of dining, gaming, dancing and more at the Casino Royale Welcoming Party on Friday, October 13th from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. It will feature several casino games, a photo booth, and a DJ showcasing top 40 hits and 50 years of James Bond singles. Alumni receptions are scheduled in a shared space at the Atlantis on Saturday, October 14th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The 32nd Fred West Lecture will be back at the Fairmont Hotel in conjunction with the 119th Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association. DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT By Dr. Robert Boyd Dear faculty, residents and friends, As most of you know, in my career, I have served as a chairman of Orthodontics for 32 years, 21 years here at the Dugoni School following 11 years at UCSF. Having been part of such a great family of friends and colleagues has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I have also been an advocate for new ideas and believe that in our quest for excellence, there eventually comes a time to open the door for the fresh start to the future. It is also time for me to transition to the next chapter of my life. As such, I will be working with our administration to step down as chair and continue on as full-time faculty and clinical researcher in our department effective October 1, 2017. I have great confidence that our school and program will continue to be at the forefront of our field and that we will attract the best of the best for future leadership. I will work as hard as I can to make sure this is a smooth transition and that the new chair is successful. Thanks again for all of your loyal friendship and support over the years. PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S REPORT By Dr. Heesoo Oh, Class of 2005 It has been a busy and productive time for residents, staff, and faculty since the last issue of the Trident. It has also been a time of change and transition for our department. Our residents attended the AAO meeting held in San Diego in April and it was great to see many alumni at the reception. Three residents from the Class of 2017, Drs. Ulysses Hsu, Maurice Samarian, and Nora Dolatabadi, represented our school well through their participation in the research and clinical poster competitions.

Nora’s presentation of her research on automatic landmark location on study casts using Quantify software program was well received. Dr. Steve Dugoni and I also presented on “Mixed dentition treatment philosophy and retrospective study of Class II correction”.

It was no surprise that the Class of 2017 passed their ABO written exams in April. They are now focusing on finishing their cases to take to the ABO clinical examination upon graduation, working hard to fulfill their academic requirements in this last trimester while also looking for jobs.
The Class of 2018 has successfully advanced to their second year of residency. They are moving towards a more clinically focused second-year curriculum and will be devoting more time to their research projects.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S REPORT (CONT’D) In addition to resident activities, there have also been many changes to the program, which includes improvement to the curriculum and changes in faculty. We created a new two-quarter long course called “3D Imaging in Orthodontics” (fall quarter) and “Dental Sleep Medicine & Airway” (winter quarter) under the direction of Drs. David Hatcher and Joorok Park. We also started collaboration with the sleep surgery clinic at Stanford University. The Class of 2018 will participate in the newly created rotation program at the sleep surgery clinic under the supervision of Dr. Stanley Liu, the program director of the sleep fellowship program. They will observe maxillomandibular advancement surgeries in sleep apnea patients and participate in the multidisciplinary seminar at Stanford University. I am sad to report that after many years of committed service, Dr. Pitts has decided that he will be unable to continue his clinical instruction in the Friday clinic. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. Pitts for his passion for the orthodontic specialty and his dedication to our residents’ education over the past 16 years. However, we would like to welcome some new additions to our faculty. Dr. Marta Baird ’11 has joined me in our Monday afternoon clinic and will also join me for the first-year cephalometric course. Dr. Armin Vahidnia ’16 has joined both our Friday clinic and Wednesday evening pre-doc Invisalign clinic. Finally, Dr. Adrian Vogt ’94, who will still be part of the Wednesday morning mixed dentition clinic, has joined Dr. Roger Boero’s “Principles on Orthodontics” course. It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Dr. Baumrind’s passing on July 22 at the age of 92. A mentor and role model to many generations of Pacific and UCSF residents, he encouraged us all to think critically. He was an incredible thinker and clinical researcher in orthodontics, who devoted his life to our profession. His presence was the sole reason that I decided to remain in this country to learn from him after completing my residency. He was still working on his 3D landmark reliability paper up until the day he went to the hospital, three days before his passing. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the orthodontic community and will be remembered for his tremendous contribution to the specialty. Lastly, Dr. Robert Boyd will be stepping down after 21 years as the department chair. The good news is that he will still be teaching full time and will be more involved in clinical research. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to him. His internationally acclaimed reputation drew me to come to UOP from Korea. He believed in me even though he needed an interpreter to understand my English and gave me the opportunity to stay and learn from many great mentors. He is a strong proponent of early treatment and has supported my studies in mixed dentition treatment for many years. If I can say I have achieved anything, it would be because of his encouragement and guidance. Thank you Dr. Boyd for all you have done for our orthodontic family! A national search for Dr. Boyd’s replacement will begin soon. It is exciting as we prepare for the future and we look forward to seeing what the new chair will bring to our department. Once it reaches $2,500,000, this will be the largest scholarship fund at our Dugoni School, providing $100,000 to our orthodontic residents annually in perpetuity. Is our goal ambitious? Yes! THIRD YEAR RESIDENTS’ REPORT By Drs. Nora Dolatabadi ’17 and Ulysses Hsu ’17 The Class of 2017 is excited about finishing up our orthodontic training! We could not have gotten this far without the support of friends and family and the training from our amazing faculty. We are especially grateful to Dr. Robert Boyd for his mentorship and guidance as chairman over the past two years. Thank you Dr. Boyd! Since we last checked in, all eight residents have successfully passed the written portion of the American Board of Orthodontics Exam and everyone is planning on completing board certification within one year of graduation. Here are some updates on the graduating residents and their futures:
Kunle Ajanaku is planning on working as an associate in the San Diego area. After having the opportunity to spend extended time in northern and southern California for residency and dental school respectively, he finds the opportunity in San Diego to be a fruitful one. Not withstanding, he plans to incorporate his love for art and design in his practice in the near future.
Mona Derentz will be working as an associate in a private practice in Bingham Farms, Michigan. She is eager to join her husband (as of July!) in Michigan while he completes his oral surgery residency. She looks forward to moving back to sunny Los Angeles in four years and pursuing private practice there.
Nora Dolatabadi has enjoyed experiencing California and is looking forward to going back east where there are seasons!
Soomin Hong is looking to stay in the Bay Area. He will bring his daughters back to the States and enjoy beaches and sunsets with them after four years of separation. Faraz Edalat is planning on returning to Los Angeles to work as an associate and is getting married in November. Congratulations Faraz!

The newly minted second year residents have been busy accepting transfer patients, welcoming the class of 2019, and traveling the country learning orthodontics. We recently attended Dr. McLaughlin's resident course in San Diego, California, GORP in Cleveland, Ohio, and Dr. Fry's practice visit in Kansas City, Mo. We are excited to work with new first year residents and to begin our second year. Dr. Bradley Albertson ’18 created this clever T-shirt for the annual contest at the GORP meeting. Each graduate program that attends submits a creation. Brad’s creation is his “orthodontic take” on the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival held each year in Indio, CA. Some of the outrageously funny puns are “The Jarabakstreet Boys” and “The New Kids on the Twin Block”.

INTRODUCING THE CLASS OF 2019
NOOR MAHJOUB ANNA CALLES was born and raised in Burlington, Vermont. She attended Wake Forest University, where she majored in Spanish literature and studied abroad in Spain and Italy. Insistent on returning to Italy during her summers, she earned a grant to study violin making in Italy. After college, she spent a year studying nutritional literacy in Mexico City as a Fulbright Scholar and then enrolled in dental school at Harvard. Following her passion to explore the world, she lived and worked in Asia during her first year of dental school. Although this description makes her sound like an aspiring cartographer, Ana is excited to settle down in San Francisco and hopefully, someday, adopt a vineyard.
ANDREW LAFLAMME was born and raised in Modesto, California. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from UCLA. Andrew completed research on cell motility while in the biology master’s program at UOP. Subsequently, he completed his dental studies at UOP. Prior to earning his D.D.S., Andrew worked in government affairs, serving as a gubernatorial appointee and working for the state senate. In his free time, he enjoys playing sports, spending time with family and seeing movies.
was raised in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated as valedictorian from Notre Dame Preparatory high school in 2009. She was then admitted to and completed a 7-year B.S./D.D.S. program at the University of Detroit Mercy and University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. There, she was extremely involved with the American Dental Education Association and Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program, along with induction into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. A native of the Midwest, she is excited to experience life on the west coast. Her interests include art, traveling, the outdoors, and foreign cuisine.
JAMES ROBLEE was raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas, home to the University of Arkansas, where he received a B.S. in biology in 2011. In 2015 James earned his D.D.S. from Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. Following dental school graduation, James moved to Los Angeles, where he has spent the past two years as a resident in UCLA’s Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine program. James is excited to be pursuing orthodontics at Pacific and exploring his new city of San Francisco alongside his wife Holly. In his free time, he enjoys aerial photography, watching the Arkansas Razorbacks, and traveling.

MICHELLE STEPANEK, the aforementioned CHRISTINE STEPANEK was born and raised in Pebble Beach, California. She is a firstgeneration American whose entire family resides in the Czech Republic and whose parents escaped communism to pursue the American Dream. Her undergraduate studies were completed at UCLA as a biology major, followed by dental school at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. In her free time, Christine enjoys traveling, long-distance running, exploring the amazing city of San Francisco, and thoroughly confusing everyone with her identical twin sister, Michelle.
KAIYUAN XU was born in Nanjing, in the southern part of China, and received education in Beijing, Capital of China. After completing elementary school, junior high and high school, he went to Shenyang, in the northern part of China, and completed a five-year bachelors degree in stomatology in 2016. He plans to go back to China after graduation to use the knowledge learned here to help his people. His hobby includes playing all kinds of chess, traveling, and playing badminton.

Michelle loves to visit various friends all over the country, enjoys adventurously eating her way through San Francisco, and engaging in various arts and crafts, including writing and illustrating children’s books. She is very excited to finally become an orthodontist after 14 years of pursuing this field.
KEVIN SHIMIZU was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and earned his undergraduate degree at UC Davis studying marine biology and environmental toxicology. He received his D.D.S. degree in 2017 as part of Pacific's first graduating class to have started and finished at the new South of Market campus. In his free time he enjoys being out in nature, swimming, snowboarding, and camping, or working on projects at home that require one too many trips to the hardware store.

AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS UPDATE By Steven Dugoni, Class of 1981 Immediate Past President, American Board of Orthodontics Congratulations to our 2016 graduates Tarek Abousheta, Matthew Joosse, and Armin Vahidnia, who were certified by the American Board of Orthodontics at the February Clinical Examination in St. Louis at the ABO Examination Center. Congratulations also to Ronald Chung, Lauri Kim, Trevan Samp, and Shana Vohra, who successfully banked cases in February and plans to submit their remaining cases soon to the ABO to complete their ABO certification. Some of the residents shared with me their experiences regarding the ABO clinical examination. Tarek remarked that “the process added so much to my education. The ABO manual provided a universal way to critique our cases. I look at every case in the same sequence we do when we grade the ABO cases before debonds in my own practice. I live in a community that appreciates what board certification means, so definitely they feel comfortable knowing that I went the extra mile to provide them with excellent treatment. It was a lot of work but it was worth it.”

Matt said that he felt “incredibly well prepared by my education at Pacific. Our Monday and Wednesday seminars, both of which involved a quick review of the records and an on-thespot treatment plan were exactly the same format as the part of the exam. The ABO examination was a great exercise in self-evaluation that I feel makes me a better clinician.”
Armin had this to say about the examination, “It was great to finally see the results of a long journey. In St. Louis, the ABO examiners discussed each of my cases and I learned about different ways of treating them. It was a valuable learning experience to evaluate and analyze each case according to the board standards. I felt well-prepared for the ABO exam after finishing residency, and am proud to be a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.” The ABO will host the educators’ symposium this November in St. Louis, and the University of Pacific will be well represented with several faculty members attending including Drs. Thodas, Cole, Oh, Boyd and Dugoni. The ABO Directors look forward to receiving input from educators on how to improve the written and clinical examination. In April at the AAO meeting in San Diego, I completed my term as ABO president, and I continue to serve my final year as an ABO director in the position of immediate past president. It is been my privilege and honor to serve this prestigious organization and to further the mission of the ABO to elevate the quality of orthodontic care for the public by promoting excellence through certification, education and professional collaboration. NECROLOGY REPORT The passing of Dr. Sheldon Baumrind By Dr. Robert Boyd Dr. Sheldon Baumrind passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 22, 2017 from complications from multiple myeloma. He was 92. A native New Yorker, Dr. Baumrind earned his dental degree from New York University. He practiced general dentistry in Berkeley, California, for several years before earning an orthodontic specialty certificate and a master of science in cell biology from the University of Oregon. We have lost a giant in the field of Orthodontics. He was truly one of the century’s greatest orthodontic clinical scientists and a powerful mentor for so many residents and faculty both at the Dugoni School starting in 1996 and at UCSF where he joined the faculty in 1969 and served as a professor of the Department of Growth and Development. He was a willing mentor for many other leading orthodontic scientists from around the world. A world class scientist, Dr. Baumrind was also truly a down to earth and humble man who preferred to be called Shelly by everyone, including his staff, fellow faculty and students. He was always ready to help any of his colleagues no matter what area of the world they lived in or even if they had different opinions about the problems they were so hoping to solve. Because he was so wise about interpersonal relationships, world history and endless other areas of interest, I frequently went to Shelly with not only my research issues, but even with personal problems. He was always a source of good advice about his friend’s problems.

Shelly was so proud to be honored by being named the first Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Endowed Professor of Orthodontics in 2015 at our dental school. This appointment is supported by a $1.2 million endowment established by Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, Dean Emeritus of our school. But his real life’s work was in his role as Director of the research center he created named the Craniofacial Research Instrumentation Lab or CRIL. He is the author of more than 110 original publications in the orthodontic, medical, statistical and engineering literature. His primary research interest for the past thirty years has been the development of integrated three-dimensional craniofacial measurement systems for use in clinical dentistry. He has been principal investigator of several National Institute of Dental Research (N.I.H.) supported studies and served as a founding officer and co-chair of the Joint University of California Berkeley. University of California San Francisco Graduate Program in Bioengineering. Shelly was also the principal investigator for the AAOF Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection project. With support from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, nine of the 11 known collections of longitudinal craniofacial growth records in the United States and Canada are featured on the project’s web site. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Professor Emeritus of the University of California San Francisco. His awards include the 2008 Craniofacial Biology Research Award from the International Association for Dental Research. Shelley is survived by his loving wife Joan Finton, three daughters (Risa, Nikki, and Susan), two stepdaughters (Julie and Nora Finton), and one grandson (Ben Rivera). An announcement will go out shortly for a memorial event to honor the life of Sheldon Baumrind, which will be held at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

CLASS OF 2007 UPDATES Jeff Kwong - Wow, I cannot believe how 10 years have gone by already! Since graduation I moved down to the South Bay, where I grew up. I have a practice in San Jose and I have also joined some study groups, which include several UOP alums. What I enjoy most these days is spending time with my family. My wife, Sarah, and I recently celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. Our son, Jayden is 9 years old and our daughter Caitlyn is almost 5. We are The Kwongs on a recent trip to Maui. frequent visitors to Disneyland, Great America, the zoo, and basically any other kid friendly place. In my free time, my daughter has helped me become an expert at all things Disney princess related, and I also coach my son’s football team. I am still an avid sports fan and try to attend as many Giants, 49ers, Warriors, and Sharks games as I can; or as many as Sarah will allow me to! Tripti Pawar is currently in a group practice in Puyallup, Washington. Upon graduation, she and her family decided to move up to the Pacific Northwest and are glad to call it their home. They enjoy all the wonderful summer and winter activities the Seattle area has to offer. Husband Krishan and Tripti have been blessed with two daughters Tara (age 7) and Keeva (age 4). Dean Emeritus Art Dugoni and his son Jim attended the NCAA Championship Game in Glendale, Arizona on April 4th between the North Carolina Tar Heels Krishan, Keeva (4), Tara (7), and the Gonzaga Bull- and Tripti. dogs. Many may not know that Art played on the basketball team while he attended Gonzaga! Each year, the Dugoni School participates in the nationwide “Give Kids a Smile” program to serve local children and Art and Jim Dugoni at the NCAA Finals in families. This year’s dental health fair was held on Saturday, Glendale, Arizona. February 25th between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm in the Pediatric Clinic at the school. Ms. Ines Fuentes, residents Bradley Anderson, Jared Little, and Adrienne Joy, and faculty member Maryse Aubert proudly represented our department.

Jetson Lee ’86 and his family celebrated the graduation of daughter Samantha from the University of the Pacific Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy. Both were presented Legacy Medallions at the Awards Banquet and dad was given the honor being part of the faculty procession and donning the doctoral hood on his daughter. Daughter, Danielle is a junior at St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga majoring in Anthropology.
