Friends of Duckworth, Though we may reflect on 2014 with some solemnity as the centenary of the commencement of hostilities in World War One, nearer to home it was the year that Duckworth was able to claim for itself the honour of becoming the UK’s oldest surviving independent trade publisher. With the purchase of Constable and Robinson by Little, Brown The Bookseller’s experts confirmed that Duckworth (founded in 1898) could proudly state it had outlasted all other contenders. For so many years of successful publishing we thank all friends of Duckworth, past and present. Surviving two world wars (and more than a few recessions) Duckworth begins the year casting an eye back at both with two contrasting but very impressive works of fiction. Max Brooks, author of World War Z and the Zombie Survival Guide, will need no introduction to booksellers and is the author of the first. Harlem Hellfighters takes the very contemporary form of the graphic novel to tell the poignant story of the legendary African-American regiment of soldiers whose glory in battle during World War One, overseas, was achieved in the face of terrible prejudice at home. Sony and Will Smith have optioned movie rights in the book for a future date, so watch this space. And for a dark fictional twist on some of the same events, Tarn Richardson’s The Damned (May) sees werewolves and a revived Catholic Inquisition appearing in No-Man’s land, alongside soldiers, in a remarkable gritty and brooding fantasy debut. Back to January, James MacManus another author returning to Duckworth sets his extraordinary story of love and diplomacy in the middle of the Blitz-torn London, at a critical point in the Second World War as America sat it out on the sidelines. With the seventieth anniversary of this war’s end, Sleep in Peace Tonight is sure to suit bookstore promotions and attract media attention with a moving tale of ‘special relationships’, personal and political. A national publicity campaign from Four Colman Getty, focusing on one of the book’s characters, will spread the word. In our 116 years or so of operation Duckworth have moved around quite a bit taking in such memorable locations as Frith Street and the Old Piano Factory in Camden, but we are now based in Shoreditch, the epicentre of The Flat White Economy. Expert economist Douglas McWilliams’s topical account of such explains how East London has pioneered digital entrepreneurship, becoming a powerhouse for growth and a model for other cities in the UK and across the world. Very pertinent to the book are issues such as immigration that are likely to feature prominently in May’s General Election. Demons and zombies in particular we know have proved something of a hit in many apps made by the digital artisans of The Flat White Economy, but it is the first who appear to fifteen and a half year old Henry Dudlow in The Boy Who Killed Demons, horror master Dave Zeltserman’s latest novel, an author whose work has been described by ForeWord magazine as “perfect for fans of Stephen King,” and who are we to disagree? As darkness recedes in the Spring Flirting With French casts a lighter look on life and culture with William Alexander’s witty story of how he attempted to consummate his love of France by learning the language. Not so easily done, he learns, but his is a journey of discovery which will delight readers of Duckworth’s own Julia Child and other francophiles. So, as we celebrate our now unique longevity once again in 2015, we thank you all for your continued support and urge you to visit our new website at www.ducknet.co.uk. Peter Mayer

SLEEP in PEACE TONIGHT James MacManus An extraordinary story of high diplomacy, low intrigue and a dangerous love affair set during the fiery nights of the Blitz ‘Readers will savour this breathtaking ride, that is both a heady, heartbreaking romance and a chance to witness this critical moment in history from the shoulders of giants – fantastic!’ Pam Jenoff, author of The Kommandant’s Girl ‘‘London of the Blitz comes vividly to life, as does the angst-ridden figure of Roosevelt’s special envoy to Churchill, Harry Hopkins. Compulsive reading.’ Simon Mawer, author of The Glass Room ISBN: 9780715649350 PRICE: £16.99 PUBLICATION: January 2015 CATEGORY: Historical Fiction EXTENT: 368pp FORMAT: Trade Paperback EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE/CW NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN BIC: FV

It is January 1941, and the Blitz is devastating England. Food supplies are low and tube stations have become bomb shelters. As the U.S. maintains its sceptical isolationist position, Winston Churchill knows that Britain is doomed without the aid of its powerful ally even as its citizens seek solace in alcohol and fleeting romances.

As bombs rain down over London, a weary Harry Hopkins, President Roosevelt’s most trusted advisor, is sent to London as his emissary, and comes face to face with the Prime Minister himself and an attractive and determined young female driver who may not be what she seems. In Sleep in Peace Tonight, a tale of courage, loyalty, and love, and the sacrifices made in the name of each, James MacManus conjures to life not only Blitz-era London and the White House but also the poignant lives of personalities that shaped the course of history during Britain’s darkest hour. National press campaign to be undertaken by Four Colman Getty

James MacManus is the managing director of The Times Literary Supplement. On the Broken Shore, was published in 2010 whereas his debut work Ocean Devil (2008) about the life of the adventurer George Hogg, was made into a film starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. ‘The Harlem Hellfighters brings to life a long forgotten piece of American history. Bravo, Max Brooks, bravo.’ Spike Lee

In 1919, the 369th infantry regiment – the Harlem Hellfighters as the Germans called them – marched home triumphantly from World War I. They had spent more time in combat than any other American unit, never losing a foot of ground to the enemy and winning countless decorations.

Though returned home from the trenches of France as heroes, this overlooked African American unit faced tremendous discrimination, even from their own government thus having to fight on two fronts as they helped to secure victory for America and their European allies. Based on true events and featuring artwork from acclaimed illustrator Caanan White, The Harlem Hellfighters delivers an action-packed and powerful story of how a group of exceptional individuals showed extraordinary courage, honour and heart in the face of prejudice and in the midst of the unprecedented horrors of the Great War. Film rights optioned by Sony and Will Smith

Max Brooks is the acclaimed author of the two bestsellers The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. He has also written for ‘Saturday Night Live’, for which he won an Emmy. He lives in New York City but is ready to move to a more remote and defensible location at a moment’s notice. Caanan White is the illustrator behind the bestselling World War II comics series Über.

A gripping work of dark fiction set in an alternative World War One, where werewolves roam and a ruthless Inquisition still holds sway. 1914, The outbreak of war. In the French city of Arras a Father is brutally murdered. The Catholic Inquisition - still powerful, but now working in the shadows - sends its most determined and unhinged of Inquisitors, Poldek Tacit, to investigate: his mission to protect the Church from those who would seek to undermine it, no matter what the cost. Yet as Tacit arrives, armed forces led by Britain and Germany confront each other across No Man’s Land. As the Inquisitor strives in vain to establish the truth behind the murder and to uncover the motives of other Vatican servants seeking to undermine him, a beautiful and spirited woman, Sandrine, warns British soldier Henry Frost of a mutual foe even more terrible lurking beneath the killing fields, that answers to no human force and wreaks its havoc by the light of the moon.

ISBN: 9780715649541 PRICE: £16.99 PUBLICATION: May 2015 CATEGORY: Dark Fiction EXTENT:352pp FORMAT: Royal Hardback EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE/CW NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN BIC: FM/FJH

Faced with impossible odds and his own demons, Tacit must battle the forces of evil, and a church determined at all costs to achieve its aims, to reach the heart of a dark conspiracy that seeks to engulf the world, plunging it ever deeper into conflict. Morally complex and fast paced, this is a gripping work of dark fiction set in an alternative twentieth century, where humanity’s desire for love, compassion and peace face daunting challenges in a world overwhelmed by total war and mysterious dark forces.

Tarn Richardson, a fan of Tolkien, was brought up in a remote house, rumoured to be haunted, near Taunton, Somerset. He has worked as a copywriter, written mystery murder dinner party games and worked in digital media for nearly twenty years. He lives near Salisbury in England. The Damned is his debut novel, the first in a series of three, featuring tortured Inquisitor Poldek Tacit.

OF ORCAS AND MEN

David Neiwert

The orca—otherwise known as the killer whale is one of earth’s most intelligent animals. Remarkably sophisticated, orcas have languages, cultures and even long-term memories, and their capacity for echolocation is nothing short of a sixth sense. They are also benign and gentle, which makes the story of the captive-orca industry and the endangerment of their population in Puget Sound that much more damning.

In Of Orcas and Men, a marvelously compelling mix of cultural history, environmental reporting, and scientific research, David Neiwert explores an extraordinary species and its occasionally fraught relationship with human beings. In the tradition of Barry Lopez’s classic Of Wolves and Men, David Neiwert’s book is a triumph of reporting, observation, and research, and a powerful tribute to one of the animal kingdom’s most remarkable members. David Neiwert is an investigative journalist based in Seattle. His reportage for MSNBC.com on domestic terrorism won the National Press Club Award for Distinguished Online Journalism in 2000.

He was on a pleasure cruise in his yacht, the Orpheus, he says, when food poisoning killed his passengers and his ship began to sink. Finding the stranded yacht, against Warriner’s wishes, Ingram boards the stranded Orpheus. There he finds Warriner’s passengers very much alive, and hungry for revenge against the man who attacked them and left them to drown. “Brilliant . . . inventive plotting, fine manipulation of a small cast, and breathtaking sequences of fantastic navigation.” The New York Times Charles Williams was one of the preeminent authors of American crime fiction. Many of his novels were adapted into feature films, including Don’t Just Stand There and Confidentially Yours (also published by Duckworth) , which was directed by Francois Truffaut.

DEATH SENTENCE

Brian Garfield

The heart-pounding sequel to Death Wish, also adapted into a feature film starring Kevin Bacon Paul Benjamin was an ordinary New Yorker until a gang of drug addicts killed his wife and raped his daughter. When the police proved helpless, Benjamin tracked and killed them one by one. Now he is in Chicago, and the cycle of violence is about to begin anew. On his first night in the city, he stumbles out of a bar in a bad part of town, pretending to be drunk.

When two thugs set upon him, he kills them both and escapes before the police arrive. They will not be the last of Chicago’s criminal class to suffer his wrath. Written by Garfield as “penance” for the success of the grisly film adaptation of Death Wish, this sequel shows that when a decent man relies on violence to settle scores, murder becomes addictive. Brian Garfield is the author of more than seventy books. A past president of the Mystery Writers of America, he has seen nineteen of his novels become movies, including Death Wish and Hopscotch, for which he wrote the screenplay.

DOVE’S NECKLACE

Raja Alem

“Raja Alem’s reputation in contemporary Arabic literature [is] similar to Nabokov’s in ours: masterful, erudite, witty, and somewhat dangerous.” BOMB In 2011, Raja Alem became the first woman to win the International Prize for Arabic Fiction When a dead woman is discovered in Abu Al Roos, one of Mecca’s many alleys, no one will claim the body because they are ashamed by her nakedness. As we follow Detective Nassir’s investigation of the case, the secret life of the holy city of Mecca is revealed. Tackling powerful issues, Raja Alem reveals a city and a civilization at once beholden to brutal customs, and reckoning (uneasily) with new traditions. Told from a variety of perspectives—including that of Abu Al Roos itself—The Dove’s Necklace is an ambitious portrait of a changing city that deserves our attention. Raja Alem was born in Mecca and now lives in Paris. She has received many awards in the Arab world and in Europe for her novels and other writing.

THE IDEA OF EUROPE

George Steiner

What lies ahead for a continent whose borders are growing even as its cultural identity recedes? In this remarkable short book, the foremost intellectual of our age brings a lifetime of erudition to bear on a subject that he has grappled with for decades, and the future of which is profoundly uncertain. The Idea of Europe finds George Steiner reckoning with Europe from a number of different angles. “Europe,” he writes, “is the place where Goethe’s garden almost borders on Buchenwald, where the house of Corneille abuts on the market-place in which Joan of Arc was hideously done to death.” It is, in other words, a continent rich with contradiction, whose many tensions—cultural, social, political, economic, and religious—have for centuries conspired to pull it apart, even as it has become more unified. George Steiner is an essayist, writer, critic and cultural philosopher. He was professor in the United States, England, Austria and Switzerland and the author of many books, including In Bluebeard’s Castle, After Babel, and The Poetry of Thought.

BLOCKADE DIARY

Elena Kochina

Under Siege in Leningrad, 1941-1942

ISBN: 9780715649831 PRICE: £9.99 PUBLICATION: March 2015 CATEGORY: Memoir EXTENT: 112pp FORMAT: B-Format Paperback EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE/CW NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN/ANZ BIC: BM

The siege of Leningrad claimed over a million civilian lives. For 872 days between 1941 and 1944, residents of Leningrad starved and scavenged, and the result was a humanitarian catastrophe with few historical parallels. Elena Kochina was thirty-four when the blockade began and reasonably prosperous— had a job, a loving family and an active cultural life. All of this was promptly effaced, and Blockade Diary is a record of what happened next. Her book takes us inside the horror to reveal the blockade in its totality. But this is far more than a catalogue of suffering and starvation: Blockade Diary is a testament to selfishness and moral collapse, but also a tribute to generosity and courage. This remarkable book reveals humanity at its best and worst. Elena Kochina was born in 1907 in St. Petersburg (later Leningrad), Russia.

Peterson, the remarkable political allegory by one of Russia’s most beloved writers—the Soviet answer to Animal Farm Praised by The New York Times Book Review as “an Abkhazian Mark Twain,” Fazil Iskander was one of the most acclaimed writers in the Soviet Union—and also one of the funniest. In Rabbits and Boa Constrictors, Iskander tells the story of a struggle between . . . well, rabbits and boa constrictors, which is really a struggle between the manipulators and the manipulated as they try to function in a failed utopia.
