2013 Recap

T

he season got off to a tremendous start for the Lady Quakers, as they didn’t allow a goal until the seventh game of the season. The six shutouts to start the season were a Wilmington modern-day record for most shutouts to open a year. WC finished the season with 10 shutouts. Just went things were seemingly going well for Wilmington, fresh off an 8-0 victory over Muskingum to open OAC play, the proverbial wheels fell off. The Lady Quakers lost three straight games and were suddenly 1-3 in the league. Not only did they already have three OAC losses, the top three teams were still ahead. Increasing the level of competition seemed to lift WC’s performance as they defeated top-ranked Otterbein and the second-seed Baldwin-Wallace in consecutive games to get back into the tournament picture. The picture wasn’t completed clear until freshman Rachelle Bowen’s overtime goal in the season-finale against John Carroll. “We feel our women’s soccer program made some exciting strides this season toward becoming one of the top teams in the OAC again and to achieve our goals of winning a championship, getting back to the NCAA Tournament,” said head coach Steve Spirk. “We have a great returning group of talented players and the future looks bright. We are looking forward to the 2013 season.” For the second straight year, senior Sarah Watters and junior Rachel Gutowski earned second-team All-OAC, while sophomore Camille Gentille was named honorable mention.

Gutowski, who is a three-time honoree, also earned honorable mention laurels as a freshman. A team captain, the defender started all 19 games she played in. The junior finished the season with three goals, two of which were game winners, and three assists. For the second consecutive season, Watters led the Lady Quakers in goals and points. With the six goals this season, she finishes her WC career with 16 goals. Her three assists were tied for second best on the team. Watters added two game-winning goals this season. Gentile was one of three players to start all 20 games, and one of four players to appear in all 20 games for Wilmington. She was third on the team with four goals, but it was defense in the midfield that was key for the Lady Quakers. Three players, Watters, Kayla Falkenbach and Hannah Riffel completed their eligibility. “Our three seniors will be greatly missed for their spirited play, leadership and for setting the standard in the classroom,” said Spirk. The women’s soccer team led the way academically. They had a school-high five members honored by the OAC. Junior Bonnie Grace ad the second-highest GPA of any studentathlete with a 3.94. She was joined on the All-Academic Honor Roll by senior Kayla Falkenbach, sophomore Caroline Guindon, sophomore Lauren Hamrock and sophomore Angela Phillips.
