Summer - Issue # 9

Editorial, by Paula Savage….. The temperatures are soaring, summer is well and truly here and so we come to the end of another successful and fabulous golf season here at Dubai Creek. As you will see from our golf round up, these past couple of months have been very busy competition wise and despite the heat, all competitions have boasted full fields of competitors. Often this is due to the wonderful sponsorship Stephen Hubner and his team are able to attract. Our sponsors are too numerous to mention by name here, but each round up does mention them and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them for their generous support of our events. Another major factor of the competitions success, I feel, is the great camaraderie we have here at Dubai Creek amongst the members. What better way is there to spend a weekend than on our gorgeous Creek course, followed by a couple of social hours in LakeView reliving what might have been if only you hadn’t hooked/ shanked/topped (delete as appropriate) your tee shot on the 18th hole?! Speaking of LakeView, great changes are planned as we speak. A major refurbishment is being carried out this summer to enhance our experience at our favourite 19th hole. The Club will keep you posted of developments. I’m sure you will agree that the Creek course was truly magnificent over the whole of the winter months. Obviously now that the hotter weather has arrived, the course has gone into transition again and quite aggressively in some areas. But, I’ll leave our Head Green Keeper Matt Perry to explain exactly what is happening and what we can expect over the next couple of months. Matt and his team deserve huge congratulations for maintaining the course all year round, so please don’t be giving him a hard time! Although competition season has quietened down, there is still plenty happening here at the Creek both on and off the course. Now may be a good time to discover the gym and get fit for the new season? Perhaps a few lessons in the swing room with our team of top professionals? Or maybe just sit back and sample some of the wonderful food and beverage promotions that are on offer. So all that remains from me for this issue is to wish you all a pleasant summer, wherever your travels may take you, and I look forward to seeing you back in the swing come September.

April to June Round Up Mashreq Medal Championship 4th April 2015 After performing well in the March event but narrowly missing out, Praveen Kalia secured victory in April as he fired a superb net 68 to claim top honours. Max Burrow was back in the winners and was almost without fault with his round of 71 which earned him 1st place in the Men’s Division A. Max finished just one shot ahead of Simon Earl, who was the division’s runner up with a net 72. Things were very closely contested in the Men’s B Division as Jamal Bin Marghoob and Tauseef Khan finished tied after rounds of 69. In the end it was Marghoob who was victorious with a slightly stronger finish to edge out Khan on a better inward half. John Fellingham continued a recent run of form and picked up the Best Gross prize with a 78. Ajay Dasani claimed his first win of the series as he came out on top in the Seniors Division after a round of 77. Young Aashka Desai produced a fine round of 72 and claimed top honours in the Ladies Division. David Gowans, Simon Earl and Parvez Merchant all made birdies and were the 2’s club winners on the day.

OMA Emirates Creek Pairs 17th April 2015 was the second installment of the OMA Emirates Creek Pairs. Format for this round was a betterball stableford, which meant team work was essential and with two bites at the cherry, some good scores were sure to be just around the corner. The Dubai Creek faithful did not disappoint, with all of the top three teams breaking the 40 point barrier. Winners with a fantastic points tally of 43 points were Ishwar Jodha and Drhuv Chopra, two points ahead of runners up Giovanni Canducci and Daniela Sacchini, whilst Anish Bhatia and Swati Singh claimed 3rd place with an impressive 40 points. All winners were presented with wonderful prizes from the day’s generous sponsors Ascots and Chapels. Claiming both the on course prizes was Creek regular, Bilal Belaid, who stuck the ball closest to the pin on both the 8th and 16th holes.

Junior Open Championship 2015 25th April 2015 Rayhaan Thomas is making quite the name for himself as of late with a string of fantastic performances. He made the headlines again this month with another superb display and a second successful defence of the Dubai Creek Junior Open title. Rayhaan continued a fine run of form and added another title to the collection for the season after carding a superb score of 1 under par 70. Tiago Lobo of Abu Dhabi Golf Club came very close and finished as the runner-up just one shot behind Thomas after a great round and a level par 71. Another Dubai Creek junior Rishi Nair also produced a fine performance on the day and was the Boys Net winner with a fantastic 6 under par 65, one ahead of the runner-up John Burki who finished with a solid 66. The Dubai Creek Ladies Club champion, Sahana Paravantavida, was back to winning ways on the stunning Dubai Creek course as her round of 74 saw her claim the Girls division title. Dakyeong Chang blew the division away with a superb net 59 to win the Girls Net title, whilst Katherina Nielsen was the runner-up in the division after a 4 under par round of 67. Kim Chiang and Eshna Bhargava were the girls nearest the pin winners on the 5th and 14th holes, with Mikhail Pinto and Aarkesh Bhatia claiming the same in the boy’s category on the 8th and 16th holes.

Mashreq Medal Championship Saturday 2nd May The ever consistent Ashok Kumar was victorious in May’s Monthly Mashreq Medal Championship with a fantastic net 67 winning some great prizes from Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Finishing just two shots behind Ashok with her personal best score at The Creek was Kristi Sealey, who came second in the overall championship and was the victor in the Ladies division with a net 69. Top spot in Men’s Division A went to Richard Kiddell with an impressive score of 70 to edge out fellow competitor Mark Dennehy on a better last 6 holes. In Men’s B Division, Aziz Al Hakim claimed first place with a net 71, whilst Tausef Khan finished runner-up with a net 72. Suresh Shewakramani picked up his first win of the series as he won the Seniors Division with a solid net score of 71. Michael McGinley also had a successful day at the office with the day’s best gross score of 72.

Clash of the Titans Thursday 7th May marked the bi-annual Clash of the Titans, a contest between Dubai Creek and Emirates Golf Club. Each club presented teams of 10 players made up of teaching professionals and club members. The Dubai Creek team set out looking to make the most of a home course advantage, whilst the Emirates Team would be eager for a victory to balance out the home defeat they suffered in the last outing at the Majilis course. Seven out of the 20 teams managed to break the 40 point barrier. An outstanding performance from the Dubai Creek Captain, Joseph Ghossoub and his partner Adonis Nasr saw them put a staggering 45 points on the board for their team, whilst the team of Dubai Creek professional Jack Woods and previous Dubai Creek Lady Captain, Maureen Platt, also put in a great performance and finished with a fantastic total of 43 points. After a wonderful afternoon of golf it was time for the scores, and in the end it was Dubai Creek who made full use of the home course advantage and made a successful defense of the title to beat their Emirates Golf Club counterparts with a total of 388 points to 369. The return leg will be held at Emirates later in the year, and the Dubai Creek team will be looking to replicate this superb performance and clinch their 3rd straight win.

Inaugural Captains Trophy Friday 8th May marked the start of The Inaugural Captains Trophy at Dubai Creek - a tournament designed by the Creek captains Joe Ghossoub and Harini White together with the Members Consultative Committee. This exciting new addition to the calendar gave the chance for The Creek members to make teams of four and play a 2-scores to count stableford challenge. The Captains Trophy itself was kindly donated by Mr. Ghossoub and was enough to tempt the professional staff from The Creek to make some teams of their own. Winning with an incredible score of 95 stableford points were the team of: Swati Singh; Ashok Kumar; Dhruv Nair and Dwaipayan Nath. A truly outstanding performance which left the rest of the field well behind on the day. In second place with what would usually qualify as an equally impressive score were: Glory Xavier; Vivian Verma; Dinesh Sharma and Manu Mehrotra who had 85 points to their name. Vinay Mehra; Abdul Meeran; Arshad Waheed and Tauseef Khan took third place, on a count back, with a hard fought 81 points.

The Creek Cup Friday 15th May saw the 2015 edition of the annual Creek Cup event – first established, and the cup itself donated, in 2007 by Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Creek’s first appointed captain. The club Captains had the opportunity to pick their teams from the members pairs that chose to enter this fun 4-Ball Betterball Match Play tournament. In the history of the event the Captain’s team are yet to taste victory, which was something that Captains, Joseph Ghossoub and Harini White were looking to fix against their Vice Captain rivals Patrick Morrow and Vanessa North. Early on things were looking very positive for the Captain’s team in the quest for their maiden victory, as they were up in over half of the games with the scoreboard showing a projected 8 – 4 victory. Jamal Saab and Russell James sealed the first point for the Captain’s team with a solid 6 & 4 victory over their Vice Captain opponents Richard Aybar and Simon Earl. They were shortly followed by their team mates George Akhras and Bilal Hamadeh who enjoyed an emphatic victory over their Vice Captain opponents, Steve Hunt and Abutourab Arghandiwal. However, after some courageous battling from the Vice Captain’s team the tide began to turn and the board that was once filled with the Captain’s red was awash with Vice Captain’s blue. Which meant that from the remaining ten matches, seven went to the Vice Captain’s team, leaving Joe and Harini’s Captain’s team empty handed for another year and on the losing end of a 7 ½ - 4 ½ score line. So, after the completion of another successful and hard fought Creek Cup it is the Vice Captain’s team who continue their impressive winning run. It will be up to future Captains Patrick and Vanessa to take their winning formula in to next year’s Creek Cup to try and get some Captain’s red on that trophy.

OMA Emirates Creek Pairs Friday 22nd May was the third installment of the OMA Emirates Creek pairs and with a full field full of members and a hat full of prizes up for grabs it was to prove another great day. This event has now gained a new level of prestige with the support of the new event partners, OMA Emirates, and prize sponsorships from Ascots & Chapels and Jaermann & Stubi. The Pairs Betterball format used in these events gives the players a great chance to play and socialize with their fellow members and compete for a host of fantastic prizes. It also sees some fabulous golf being played and some great scoring posted. All three top teams broke the 40 point barrier but it was Ed Fearn and his lovely lady, Kate Duffy, with a magnificent 45 points who claimed top spot, narrowly beating last month’s champions Ishwar Jodha and Dhruv Chopra on 43 points. Claiming third place with an impressive 42 points was the pairing of Mohammed Al Musharrekh and Hassan Dahabiyeh.

Mashreq Medal Championship Saturday 6th June was a very warm installment of the very popular Mashreq Medal Championship and order of merit. This month’s winner was George Chidiac, who was victorious over an impressive field of players when he carded a fantastic net 68 to claim top spot. Finishing just two shots behind George was Glory Xavier, who came second in the overall championship and was the victor in the Ladies division with a net 69. Top spot in the Men’s Division A category went to Michael Nielsen who produced an excellent score of 70 to edge out fellow competitor Jamal Saab by one stroke. In the Men’s B Division, Club Captain Joseph Ghossoub claimed first place with a well crafted net 70 which meant that with a net 73, Robert Platt finished as this month’s runner-up in division B. George Varghese picked up his first win of the series as he won the Seniors Division with a net score of 76. Dino Varkey marked his return to the Mashreq Medal with a gross score of 74, which was the best gross score of the day. So, at the half way stage in the season long Mashreq Medal Championship, it is Mark Dennehy who leads the way in the order of merit standings for the second month in a row.

Inter-Society Challenge 2015 Friday 12th June saw Dubai Creek host the thirteenth edition of its prestigious Inter-Society Championship. This annual event has always been a key event in the golfing calendar and it is a chance for Dubai Creek to recognize and bring together the various golfing societies from across the region to compete in some fun and light hearted competition. Each society team consisted of eight players which would compete in the Pairs Betterball Stableford format with all 4 pair’s scores counting towards the overall team score. After some great scoring from all of the teams in hot and humid conditions, it was the Indian Golf Society Team 1 which consisted of Ashok Sindhu, Balvinder Sindhu, Suresh Shewakramani, Anand Lakhiani, Nelly Amarnani, Satwinder Sembi, Ishu Rupani and Anish Bhatia that emerged victorious with a superb winning team total of 155 points. The Dubai Creek ‘DOGFIGHT’ team, Joseph Ghossoub, Adonis Nasr, Mark Irwin, Stephen Barker, Yves Aboukhaled, Jamal Saab, Mark Holmans and Kevin Savage made the most of their home course knowledge and finished runners up for the second year running after a great team effort and team total of 152 points. Scoring was very tight indeed and just five points separated the day’s winners. Unable to make a successful defence of their title but still securing a podium finish with a 150 point total was the Sport 2 Business Team 1 of Russell Yeomans, Richard Aybar, Kristi Sealey, Andrew Smolak, Obe Sealey, Michael Lennon, Fathi Al Busaidy and Randall Mohammed.

UAE Mens Scratch League Final Friday 12th June congratulations to Dubai Creek Men’s Scratch League Team for successfully defending their title. In a 2 Leg affair against Arabian Ranches, the Creek Men’s Team were victorious with an emphatic 7-1 win. Afterwards, Dubai Creek Scratch Team Captain, John Fellingham commented; “What a superb result. I would like to thank all of my team for their great individual performances and teamwork today and last week at Arabian Ranches. It’s great to get such a good result in the final and I’m very proud of all of my team. We look forward to next year, when we will hopefully be able to defend our title once more”

23rd Dubai Duty Free Golf Cup Saturday 13th June Despite hot and humid conditions, there were a host of scores under par and it required an extra special performance from EGF member Dipesh Makwana, who was the day’s overall winner with a superb total of 41 Stableford points. Hot on the heels of Dipesh was Dubai Creek ace Max Burrow who had a magnificent gross score of 67 and a points total of 40, which was comfortably enough to give him the heavily sought after best gross prize. The battle for the Men’s Division winner was a closely contested affair but winning with an excellent score of 40 points was Stuart Murray, whilst Mal De Morgan took the runner-up spot with 38 points, just edging out Dubai Creek Captain Joe Ghossoub on a better back nine score, who finished the day in 3rd place. EGF lady member Satnam Kaur took the Ladies Division title, with a superbly constructed 38 points. In second place was Dubai Creek’s Lady Captain Harini White with 36 points, whilst Dubai Creek Lady Vice Captain, Vanessa North, finished in third place on 35 points. Alan Salem recorded 38 points to take the fiercely contested Seniors Division title and youngster Zubin Chandra raised the standard in the Junior Division scoring a fantastic 39 points and claiming top spot.

Dubai Creek Colleague Party 2015

A huge thank you to all of our members who donated prizes for the 2015 Annual Colleague Party.

An update from Matthew Perry, Well I hope you all enjoyed the winter months and the over seeded golf course, we always try to present the course the best we can through the cooler months and felt that happened this year. Sadly we are now into the months when transition is taking place where we are moving from Rye Grass rough back to Bermuda Grass. Sprigging of bare areas has been taking place which is necessary as on occasions the Bermuda grass which has been covered for nearly five months does not come back through. Growing in of such sprigs takes three to four weeks. We appreciate your patience during this time and aim to get the golf course back to Bermuda as quickly as possible. We have a few projects that we will undertake during the summer which will help improve the course. Low areas around the course having been causing problems in recent months especially on hole 6. These will be filled in and new drainage installed to make sure we don’t have standing water any more. There are a few tees we need to re level which have built up over time due to filling in divots. These will be stripped and re grassed to make a much more even playing surface. Our long closure is booked in for the end of June so the heavy coring will take place followed by topdressing. We will do as previous years and brush in the sand by hand so that we get quick recovery. Golf Course Maintenance wishes you all a pleasant summer and see you on the course.

And finally….. Hearty congratulations to our former Captain Mr George Horan for his Hole in 1 on the Par 3, 14th here at the Creek on Wednesday 13th May. Well done George!

Spotlight on The Pros In this issue we get to know Jack Woods, who joined our team of Professionals here at the Creek in January of this year. With the name Jack and Woods, he was surely destined to be a golfer?! Jack is quite the all-round sportsman, however, his world is about to be turned upside down at the end of August, when together with his wife Chantal, they are expecting the arrival of their first child! So, good luck to Jack and Chantal, we look forward to hearing about baby Woods arrival in the world, but first let’s find out some more about Jack, the lad, himself. PS: When did you join the Creek and from where? JW: I joined the Creek January of this year having previously worked at Mid Herts Golf Club in Hertfordshire, England. PS: Where were you born? JW: I was born just down the road from where I previously worked in a place called Welwyn Garden City also in Hertfordshire. PS: At what age did you first start playing golf? JW: I had some group lessons when I was 9/10 and enjoyed them but due to a conflict with rugby didn’t take the game up seriously until I was 14. PS: Which is your home Club? JW: My first golf club was Aldwickbury Park Golf Club but I would say my home club would be Mid Herts Golf Club. PS: When did you turn professional and at what age? JW: I turned professional in 2009 when I was 20 and did my PGA at Mid Herts Golf Club PS: Which tours did you play on? JW: I played all the local regional tours including the regional PGA events. I also played some events on the Jamega Tour and a couple of Europro Tour events. PS: When did you decide to become a teaching pro? JW: When I first started my PGA course I was still keen on a playing career but felt I needed a back up option. I spent my first year after qualifying mixing playing with teaching before deciding to teach full time. That would have been towards the end of 2012 that I made the decision to back off from playing and just teach instead. PS: How old where you the first time you broke par and on which course? JW: I first broke par when I was 16 in a junior open at Aldwickbury Park during the second round. I shot -1 although truth be told I dropped a few shots towards the end as the nerves got to me, otherwise it could have been a lot better. Thankfully everyone else struggled which gave me my first junior open win! PS: Favourite golf course/The best course you have played? JW: My favourite course has to be the Duchess course at Woburn. It’s seriously tight off the tee although whilst you may not have much of a shot if your offline you almost always find your ball! Each hole is lined by pine trees and the course has so many undulations and dog leg holes. A great test of golf that really rewards you when you’re playing well but punishes you if you’re not keeping the ball in play! If you’re given the chance to play there then make sure you do! PS: Who would make up your dream fourball? JW: That would have to be my Dad, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. My dad and I taking on the two best golfers of their eras, doesn’t get much better than that! PS: Which is your favourite club in your bag and why? JW: Probably my Gap Wedge, if I could choose a yardage it would always 100 yards so I can knock down a gap wedge! Generally if I feel very confident I will hit it within 10 feet from this yardage! PS: What would be your best tip for amateur golfers? JW: Relax, really enjoy your good shots and try to forget the poor shots. If you worry less about what your score is or where your ball might end up you will tend to play better. We put too much unnecessary pressure on ourselves when it is supposed to be a hobby not a job! PS: Which other sports do you play/have an interest in? JW: I come from a very sporty family so I have interests in many sports! I love my football, rugby and F1 in particular having played both football and rugby growing up. I still follow my football team, Tottenham Hotspur, as much as possible so it’s probably for the best that my days off follow most games allowing me to sulk at home instead of to my pupils!! PS: Do you have any gym advice to stay golf fit? JW: I am terrible when it comes to getting in the gym but I have made a promise to myself that over the summer I will make a real effort to get in the gym. General cardio for me is always important especially for when its hotter and you’re starting to tire towards the end of your round! You certainly need to be physically and mentally fit and ready for the last two holes here at the Creek!

Harry Hill was also a nearest the pin winner, along with Kabir Nanda for their accurate tee shots on the par 3, 5th and 8th holes.
