SPRING EXHIBITION 2013 BOAT ART
Several years ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to see India House Club’s famous collection of boat art. When the club was founded, lower Manhattan was a nexus of shipping activity and it’s members consisted of owners and executives of shipping companies, maritime and admiralty attorneys and insurance executives and brokers. Many of these members donated art to the club over the years. I was surprised at how commercial and conventional these pieces were, not precisely good, but serviceable. Eventually, the light bulb went on and I realized that these prints were the companies’ physical records of their ships, their clients’ ships and their insured assets. Accuracy and detail were paramount. These pieces were not developed as art. They were part of the historic record and, if history has converted them to art objects as it has with other items, that is the decision of history, not the maker. But boats are alive and deserve to be treated in art with the stature they deserve. We bring them to you in all their beauty, whether river boat, dinghy or ocean capable, whether with humor or with honor, or with sadness caused by someone’s error. These boats are not all ladies, and they deserve our appreciation. They also deserve a good home.
