Features

Farwest Region History Since inception, the Farwest Region has meaningfully contributed to the growth, leadership and vitality of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The first Farwest chapter was chartered at the University of California at Berkeley in 1921. Today, the Faithful, Fierce, Focused and Fabulous Farwest Region is comprised of 84 active chapters located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as international chapters in Japan (Okinawa and Tokyo) and the Republic of Korea (Seoul). The Farwest Region is extremely proud to have had Founders Bertha Pitts Campbell, Zephyr Chisom Carter and Wertie Blackwell Weaver as members of our region. Three National Presidents: Sorors Vivian Osborne Marsh, 7th National President; Geraldine P. Woods, 13th National President; and Mona Humphries Bailey, 17th National President called the Farwest home.

A Message from the Regional Director & Regional Representative Dear sorors of the faithful, fierce and focused Farwest Region: Welcome to this Spring 2016 edition of the Farwest Focus! Since the 52nd National Convention in Houston last summer, we have been fully engaged in implementing training; chapter programs; strategic partnership initiatives; D.I.D. training; Membership Intake Training; Founders Day celebrations; conducting membership intake with/for our collegiate chapters and many other activities. Kudos to all on stepping up to support and implement the work of Delta in the Farwest Region. The 2015-16 fiscal year also brought changes to our regional leadership team, based upon the adoption of amendments to the Grand Chapter Constitution & Bylaws at the 52nd National Convention. Of note to this issue, Soror Shante Morgan-Durisseau resigned from her position as Regional Journalist to continue her excellent work on the National Information and Communications Committee. We also said goodbye to Soror Sabrina Barnes, who had provided excellent editorial and layout support on the Focus, due to her position on the National Arts and Letters Commission. However, the region is blessed with a wealth of talented, dedicated sorors! So, we welcome the talented and dedicated Soror LaConnie Taylor-Jones as the new Regional Journalist, and thank her for stepping up to this vital position, while also continuing in the demanding position of Chapter President! Sorors, we know you will enjoy the articles featured in this edition of the Farwest Focus. You will find news on the award-winning chapters at the 52nd National Convention last summer; the Leadership and Training Summit in Las Vegas and Founders Day celebrations form across the region. Also included are articles on the 10th International Sisterhood Retreat in Okinawa, Japan; news about outstanding chapter events and outstanding sorors and reflections on our beloved sorors who entered the Omega Omega Chapter between last summer and this spring. NATIONAL NEWS - 52nd National Convention Radiantly wearing red, sorors gathered on July 26t, 2015at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston, Texas to celebrate the past, present and future of the Farwest Region. Our 17th National President Mona Humphries Bailey addressed the audience with passion and purpose, stating ,“Black America is in serious trouble…we must step up the game in leading, serving, and empowering our communities.” During the meal, a slideshow played, highlighting chapter activities, past regional directors and regional representatives, and the Founders who planted the seeds in what would become the Farwest Region. Soror Sabrina Barnes sang “Just Ordinary People” driving home the message that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

FARWEST NEWS - Leadership and Training Summit

2015 Strategic Training Retreat The Fabulously, Faithful, Fierce and Focused sorors of the Farwest Region gathered on Sept. 25-27, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nev. for the Farwest Strategic Training Retreat.

Soror Johnson charged sorors to display characters of consistency, competency and purpose; act wisely, be the better person and allow God to handle the rest.

Regional Director Sandra Submitted by: Soror LaConnie Taylor-Jones Phillips Johnson and Regional Representative Mariah Kelly provided an overview of the accomplishments achieved during 2014-2015, which included: support to our strategic partnerships, EMBODI Day of Service, over $7,600 raised to fight sickle cell disease and our 2015 Youth State, focusing on the prevention of human trafficking. In keeping with the theme: “An Extraordinary Sisterhood – Rooted in our Past, Expanding our Future,,” Sorors Johnson and Kelly charged attendees to fulfill the strategic vision by focusing on sisterhood training, leadership development and communication. In addition, the weekend was filled with a Friday night welcome reception, training opportunities for advisors and DID trainers as well as a phenomenal session focused on preparing sorors to better understand the challenges and opportunities of leadership.


FARWEST NEWS - 10th International Retreat The 10th International Sisterhood Retreat, hosted by the

Okinawa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Inc., in Okinawa, Japan was held Jan. 15-18, 2016 for chapter members currently residing in the Asia-Pacific region. This momentous celebration focused on the national theme, "Uncompromising Commitment to Communities: Service, Leadership and Empowerment." The keynote speaker was National President Paulette C. Walker, who reminded sorors that, "you asked for the job... now it's time to do the work."

Also in attendance was our 16th National President Thelma Daley and Farwest Regional Director Sandra Phillips Johnson. The weekend was jam-packed with activities, which included a welcome reception; service, leadership and empowerment workshops; a fire and ice banquet; Rededication Ceremony; ecumenical service; and a sisterhood evening held at the home

of Soror Shane Butler, an OAC charter member. The retreat culminated with a sunrise yoga session followed by an energetic nature walk. The convergence which brought sorors together from all over world, including as far away as South Africa, was peppered with a number of 'firsts' not done at any previous Pacific International Retreats. A few of those trailblazing 'firsts' included: registration, headquarters, and seminar programs at the Ginowan City Okinawa Convention Center and the Fire & Ice Banquet at the Okinawa South East Botanical Gardens. The retreat hosted a 30-day international social media campaign on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, which not only raised awareness about the event and the Okinawa Alumnae Chapter, but increased followers across three mediums. Relationships were created in the local and global communities, which broadened the chapter’s influence as leaders in the international populace. The campaign also garnered three additional paid registrations to the retreat as well as a large increase in 'followers' and 'likes' on all three social media venues. FARWEST NEWS - Founders Day Throughout the Region Arizona Statewide Founders Day Celebration

The Phoenix Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter hosted the 2016 Arizona Statewide Founders Day celebration on Feb. 19-21, 2016 at the Arizona Grand Resort. Over 100 sorors from Tucson Alumnae, Tempe Alumnae, Mu Eta and Iota Kappa chapters kicked-off the three -day celebration Friday evening with a public reception and welcome for keynote speaker and past National Second Vice President Soror Chelsea Hayes. Attendees enjoyed a historical documentary of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as well as a presentation of the footprints each chapter has made in their respective service areas. On Saturday, the celebration continued with a rededication ceremony and community service project followed by a luncheon. The celebration concluded with worship services at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix and a Sisterhood Brunch. The recipient of the 2016 community service project was Arizona Common Ground, a nonprofit organization that supports, advocates and mentors previously incarcerated youth and adults to assist them in becoming servant leaders. Sorors were asked to donate toiletries to prepare unisex, male, and female bags for the organization. Well over 160 bags were presented to Frantz Beasley, president and cofounder of Arizona Common Ground.

FARWEST NEWS - Founders Day Throughout the Region Northern California Honors Founders in San Francisco The Union Square Hilton Hotel ballroom buzzed with excitement and activity in San Francisco, Calif. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. More than 550 sorors and community members came to hear National President, Paulette C. Walker who led the Rededication Ceremony followed by a soul-stirring keynote address on the theme: “Continuing a Tradition of Achieving Through Education and Action.” Host chapter San Francisco Alumnae decided to keep the traditional Rededication Ceremony for sorors-only while opening the luncheon and keynote address to the general public so friends, loved ones and supporters could join Delta in their celebration.

The San Francisco Alumnae Chapter worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless day jam-packed with activities for sorors and guests. The morning began with a breakfast honoring Delta DEARS. Throughout the day, vendors displayed their Delta-themed wares to the delight of sorors. The community service project benefited San Francisco Unified School District’s Youth and their Families in Transition Program. Submitted by: Soror Sonji Walker

Founders Day in the Pacific Northwest President Jeanne Baynes and the Spokane Alumnae Chapter hosted a beautiful Founders Day celebration for the 10 chapters from the states of Washington and Oregon. The theme: “A Sisterhood Called to Serve: Transforming Lives, Impacting Communities” was evident in the keynote address delivered by Regional Director Sandra Phillips Johnson. Soror Johnson also served as the presiding officer at the Rededication Ceremony and 17th National President Mona H. Bailey, was the rededication leader. Deltas from California and Nevada joined the celebration as well as Soror Bette Matier, a former member of Spokane Alumnae who journeyed from the East Coast to support her sisters and reconnect with her friend, Past Farwest Regional Director, Soror Doris Jackson Britt.

FARWEST NEWS - Founders Day Throughout the Region Century City Alumnae Hosts 103rd SCCC Founders Day More than 700 sorors attended the Southern California Coordinating Council’s 103rd Founders Day Weekend Celebration that featured a dynamic keynote address by Soror Paulette Brown, president of the American Bar Association (ABA). Century City Alumnae Chapter served as host of the event held Feb. 12-13, 2016 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Los Angeles. The theme was: “Founded on Purpose: Built on Service. Growing in Sisterhood.” The weekend featured a welcome reception on Feb.12 and a Rededication Ceremony and luncheon on Feb. 13. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority dignitaries in attendance included: Farwest Regional Director Sandra Johnson Phillips, Regional Representative Mariah Kelly, 17th National President Mona Humphries Bailey, and Honorary Member Paula Williams Madison. Moments before Brown rose to the podium, news outlets reported the sudden death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Brown, who joked with the audience that her prepared remarks paled in comparison to the comments she needed to make, underscored the importance of creating a diversity pipeline as it pertains to electing and appointing judges and voter registration.

Just as sorors were enjoying the welcome reception activities, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who was on his way to the Los Angeles World Airport, stopped by. Garcetti brought greetings and extended praise and congratulations for the sorority’s work in the community to the delight of those in attendance. Garcetti’s comments were followed by remarks from Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson. Also in attendance were District Attorney Jackie Lacey and representatives of the Divine Nine who brought greetings from their respective organizations.

“It matters who we elect,” Brown said, adding that, “an opportunity for a president to nominate a Supreme Court justice has long-lasting repercussions. Now more than ever we need to be on the forefront and be able to make recommendations of those we believe will represent the interests of our communities.” Brown, a partner and co-chair of the firm-wide Diversity & Inclusion Committee at Locke Lord LLP, and the first African-American woman president of the ABA, was initiated through Alpha Chapter at Howard University. Delta Red Carpet Seattle Alumnae —‟Race” Opening Weekend

Inglewood Alumnae —‟The Wiz” Live” Viewing Party On Dec. 2, 2015, members of Inglewood Alumnae Chapter gathered at the home of Arts and Letters Committee Chair Mary Baker for “The Wiz“ live viewing party. The party was held in support of the National Arts and Letters Commissions Red Carpet Experience. Several of the sorors present remembered seeing “The Wiz” on Broadway or watching it on television in 1978. The 2015 version of this classic brought the vivid world of Oz to life in a fresh, funky sing-along journey down the yellow brick road. From the start of the show to the finish, sorors sang along, recited parts of the script verbatim and compared favorites such as Michael Jackson (as Scarecrow) and Nipsey Russell (as Tinman) to their modern day counterparts Elijah Kelley and Ne-Yo, respectively. All in all, a good time was had by all.

Bakersfield Alumnae Celebrates Academic Excellence On Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, Bakersfield Alumnae Chapter recognized 11 remarkable high school seniors. These young men and women were acknowledged for excelling academically and serving as leaders, stellar athletes as well as community advocates. The keynote speaker was Soror Barbara Bagneris Member, National Finance. Her inspiring words made a lasting impact on all as she encouraged each recipient to be B.R.A.V.E. (Bold, Relentless, Accessible, Visionary and Empathetic). The afternoon was filled with a beautiful array of family, community, and entertainment by the recipients through musical talents and poetry. Some of the universities the recipients selected to attend this fall include: Columbia, CSU Bakersfield, Morehouse, Stanford, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara where they plan to major in the fields of: chemical engineering, cinema, computer science, nursing and pharmacy. US Attorney General Lynch Visits Richmond U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch arrived in Richmond, Calif. on Sept. 26 , 2015 for a one-day tour and met with Richmond youth and police officers in an effort to improve community relations and acknowledge cities that have done a good job of reducing violence and building community policing. During her visit, she also met with female law enforcement chiefs to discuss women in leadership and held a round-table talk with representatives from community organizations and schools along with Contra Costa Alumnae member, Soror Jovanka Beckles who serves on Richmond’s City Council. Richmond was one of six cities Attorney General Lynch visited on her national tour aimed at highlighting positive police practices and restoring public trust. She highlighted the Richmond Police Department's early adoption of body cameras, training on implicit bias and programs such as Operation Ceasefire, which addresses gun violence by pulling in police, probation officers and community groups.

Fairbank Alumnae Spreads Holiday Cheer For the second year, Fairbanks Alumnae Chapter partnered with the local Fairbanks Police Department and Alaska State Troopers during the holiday season to sponsor Shop with a Cop. This program was designed to promote a positive collaboration with the local community. Disadvantaged students from local school were selected to participate in this event and were provided an opportunity to view cops in a positive role as they played car sirens, watched movies, made crafts, and participated in games. Most importantly, each student shops with their newfound cop friend at the local department stores not only themselves, but their family members, too. The event concluded with gift wrapping and dinner.

High Desert Unveils King Memorial The High Desert Alumnae Chapter helped to sponsor the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. plaque, which was unveiled at the Victorville Civil Rights Memorial. It was the first plaque to be dedicated at the Memorial. The unveiling took place at the 10th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Peace March also sponsored by the chapter.

Inglewood Alumnae Youth Forum Takes Center Stage On Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 at the Inglewood Public Library Gladys Waddingham Lecture Hall, the Inglewood Alumnae Chapter’s Social Action Committee collaborated with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. - Kappa Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter to present an informative and interactive overview for youth, ages 11-18, on the issue of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC). Over 100 were in attendance, which included more than 60 participants from IAC’s Delta Academy, Delta GEMS and EMBODI youth initiative programs. The forum included a panel discussion with experts in the field, followed by a Q&A and group work. Participants developed a social media campaign to address the issue involving CSEC and used an array of social media venues such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. At the conclusion of the event, participants proudly presented their campaigns to the entire audience. Submitted by: Soror Kimberly Brown

Las Vegas Alumnae Competes in MLK Parade On Jan. 18, 2016, Las Vegas Alumnae sorors participated in the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in downtown Las Vegas, Nev. Members of Las Vegas Alumnae and Eta Chi chapters walked, strolled, and stepped their way to receiving the 1st Place Best Greek Sorority trophy. The Delta GEMS and Delta Academy members walked in support of the parade.

Inglewood Alumnae International Efforts Highlights HIV/AIDS On Dec. 12, 2015, the Inglewood Alumnae Chapter’s International Awareness and Involvement Committee partnered with Dr. Cynthia Davis and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation to highlight the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic at the 35th Annual Black Doll Show – Trench Art Retrospective: The War against HIV/AIDS Women of the African Diaspora in the Trenches. The exhibit showcased dolls, quilts, altars and emphasized the impact of HIV/AIDS domestically and globally on women of color. The exhibit opening was held and included a performance by S.H.I.N.E, Gary Jones & the Yuppets, and a panel discussion with women living with HIV/ AIDS. The opening event marked the beginning of a number of HIV/AIDS related events scheduled to take place through Feb. 2016, which will include: doll making workshops to make and donate dolls for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS as well as a preview screening of the PBS documentary, “Wilhemina’s War.” Submitted by: Soror Kimberly Brown

Las Vegas Alumnae — S.T.O.M.P. Domestic Violence Domestic Violence is not in our DNA! This was the theme of the Physical and Mental Health Committee’s Signature event, S.T.O.M.P. (Standing Together Opposing Misuse of Power), held on Oct. 24, 2015, at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, Las Vegas, Nev. S.T.O.M.P. was designed to allow the sharing of personal experiences and engage the expertise of professionals in the community so participants learn to become advocates for themselves and those they care about. This program was established in honor of LVAC member Soror Bronwyn Greene, whose life was taken by brutal domestic violence, April 16, 2010. However, justice was served when her aggressor was recently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Submitted by: Soror Ciann M. Gray

Long Beach Alumnae Supports Breast Cancer Awareness We celebrated life, we increased our awareness and we inspired hope at the Worship in Pink- It’s a Pink Thing Weekend held Oct. 17-19, 2015. Sorors from Long Beach Alumnae had a great time collaborating with Tabahani Book Circle, Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Imperial Heights Community Church. Event activities included: a sold-out Paint in Pink Event on Friday and Zumba dancing and educational workshops on Saturday. The weekend ended with a Sunday afternoon worship in pink service where we all came together to lift up prayers for breast cancer survivors and remember those lost by placing their names on our comfort tree. Participants left inspired with an increased awareness of the importance of early detection and being physically, mentally and spiritually healthy.

A Colorful Christmas Village On Dec. 13, 2015, Phoenix Metropolitan Alumnae hosted the first annual “A Colorful Christmas Village.” This program led by Soror Dawn Strobert was designed to provide a diverse perspective to the concept of Santa Claus. Using a Santa Claus of an African-American decent, sorors posed as elves while families took pictures with Santa and engaged in other festive activities, which included: selling Christmas Cards, facilitating holiday arts and crafts for children, hosting vendor tables, storytelling, and gift wrapping for donations. The event attracted many visitors and plans are underway for the 2016 holiday season. Submitted by: Soror Lyssa Black

Changing America Traveling Exhibit Kick-Off On Dec. 12, 2015 at the Central Library of Los Angeles, Los Angeles South Bay Alumnae Chapter’s Social Action Committee and the San Bernardino-Riverside Area Alumnae Chapter’s Delta Diamonds hosted the Kick-Off Celebration of the Changing America Traveling Exhibit. The exhibit was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Central Library of Los Angeles is one of only 50 sites across the United States to host this notable traveling exhibition that explores through images the historical context of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and the 1963 March on Washington. The traveling tour helps public audiences understand and discuss the relationship between these movements. Although 100 years separates the two events, they are profoundly linked together in a larger story of liberty and the American experience.

Pomona Valley Alumnae Makes Home Improvements On Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, the Pomona Valley Alumnae Chapter partnered with Habitat for Humanity to present “A Brush with Kindness.” This program assists low income families with outside home rehabilitation. Sorors broke out their paint brushes, hammers and hard hats to work on home improvements for an elderly resident in the local area. “This was a rewarding experience for our chapter, and set the tone for the type of future community projects we’re interested in,” said, Natalie McReynolds, Chapter President. NEWS AROUND THE REGION Portland Alumnae Co-Hosts Talk ‘n Taste Improving the health and wellness of seniors is a major goal of the Portland Alumnae Chapter's Physical and Mental Health committee. Talk and Taste 2015, a series of four monthly workshops for seniors, was held at the June Key Delta Community Center in Portland between June and September where healthy food choices were artfully presented by a local caterer. This summer, the committee co-sponsored the “Talk” series workshops in partnership with the Pre Serve Coalition, which is a coalition of individuals from health care, service organizations and the community, collaborating on initiatives that support the health and well-being of older African-Americans adults in the Portland metropolitan area. Previous workshops have focused on ways to improve brain health, which included: guest speakers on brain health, the importance of exercise, exercise demonstrations, ways to maintain balance along with other aspects of preserving memory. Seattle Deltas meet The Man from Essence Who knew Essence magazine was founded by four Black men who actually considered naming the first magazine devoted to Black women, Sapphire? Or that the partnership between the founders was so contentious at times, one of them actually came to work armed with a gun? Edward Lewis, the only founder to survive the early chaos, shared the back story of the beginning of Essence magazine as part of a free event Seattle Alumnae Chapter sponsored for the community, saluting Black History Month. In a discussion facilitated by Soror Sharon Williams, Director of the Central District Forum for Arts and Ideas, Mr. Lewis and his co-author, Audrey Edwards talked about making history as they were living it. At times, “The Man from Essence,” reads like episodes of the hit TV show, “Empire.” Seattle Alumnae Chapter partnered with the Elliott Bay Book Company to have copies of the book for sale. Members of the community were able to have their books signed and pictures taken with one of America’s game changers.

NEWS AROUND THE REGION SFVA Hosts 3rd Annual College Planning Conference San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter’s African-American College Planning Conference was held at Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita, Calif. on Oct. 24, making it the third year the chapter has brought this much needed service to the community. Over 300 people were in attendance for the free event, which featured two dozen workshops, free breakfast and lunch, a college resource fair, and keynote address from the host of the syndicated TV show, “America’s Court,” Judge Kevin Ross. Sorors were on- site at the crack of dawn to setup for what turned out to be an informative and motivational day. This year's event partners were William S. Hart Union High School District, Upward Bound and the Valley Nupes, who all took a hand in bringing diverse and pertinent content to the workshops. With three sessions of simultaneous workshops, attendees had more than 20 opportunities to create the blue prints to their college futures. The workshop topics ranged from finding financial aid to HBCU's vs. PWI's. There were event niche topics like race relations on campus, STEM, and balancing classes as a college athlete. Following the workshops, the college resource fair kicked off with 20 vendors ranging from Howard University to UNCF. Robust participation in the fair's opportunity drawing brought in $277 to support the chapter's educational programs and next year's date is already set for Oct. 22, 2017. The Delta Teacher Efficacy Campaign Makes Arizona History For the first time in history, the Arizona Department of Education along with The Fortitude Now Foundation and Tempe Alumnae Chapter collaborated with the Delta Teacher Efficacy Campaign (DTEC) to host a Town Hall Teacher Advocacy Session specifically addressing the needs of teachers instructing children of color in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. The Town Hall was held on Saturday Oct. 3, 2015 at the Arizona Department of Education. According to Soror Tonya Norwood with the Fortitude Now Foundation, and member of Tempe Alumnae, “The direct and forthright dialogue amongst teachers and community leaders, addressed major efforts and techniques that are lacking when addressing the effectiveness of educating our children.” Submitted by: Soror Tonya Norwood

SERVICE Is What We Do In Feb., the Ventura County Alumnae Chapter volunteered at FOOD Share, Inc., to sort food that will be distributed to the hungry throughout Ventura County. Sorors sorted 860 pounds of food, which will ultimately feed 679 people. In the spirit of an African proverb, which says, “it takes a village,� VCAC believes that partnering with organizations like FOOD Share, Inc., is an effective way to make an impressionable impact on the community because there is power in numbers!

NEWS AROUND THE REGION Washington State Chapters Welcomes New State Coordinator Farwest Regional Director Soror Sandra Philips Johnson appointed Bellevue Alumnae member Carletta Curry, to the position of Washington State Coordinator. Soror Curry’s Delta resume is an example of a true Delta. Since her initiation at the Huntsville Alumnae Chapter in April 1997, Soror Curry has worked hard for our sorority. While in Huntsville, Soror Curry served as chapter journalist, GEMS Co-chair and was a member of Arts and Letters, Internal Development, Rituals and Ceremonies, Ways and Means, Heritage and Archives and Educational Development Committees. It was under her leadership of the Heritage and Archives committee that Huntsville Alumnae was awarded first place in the Southern Region for their chapter history at the 50th National Convention in New Orleans. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2011, Soror Curry has served as chapter vice president, chapter historian, and acted as an assistant to Bellevue Alumnae’s president. She’s chaired two committees: Ways and Means and International Awareness. Soror Curry has also served as the Leader of the Minerva Circle and the Conveyor of Odyssey. On the regional level, she was the DID trainer for the 10 collegiate and alumnae chapters in Washington and Oregon from 2012-14.

Xi Psi Chapter Hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Week During fall 2015, the sorors of Xi Psi Chapter in Pullman, Wash., organized a week long Breast Cancer Awareness Week program at Washington State University, which was a huge success! Throughout the week, sorors staffed tables on campus with fun, educational games, which was disseminated to students, staff and faculty. Xi Psi partnered with the ladies of CanCan Health during the evening to provide a more personal breast cancer education targeted to women of color in the Pullman community. Throughout the evening, women were able to learn how to check for early signs of breast cancer and ways to begin to prevent breast cancer in the future by slowly making healthy lifestyle decisions. Soror Spotlight: Berkeley Bay Area Alumnae Chapter’s–Joyce Crum Berkeley Bay Area Alumnae Chapter’s Soror Joyce Crum was recently named 2015 Manager of the Year by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Commission. She has been with the Department of Human Services since 2003 and is a valued member of the executive leadership team and widely respected throughout City government. Since 2004, over 20,000 individuals exited homelessness due in large part to the efforts of the Housing & Homeless Division under Soror Crum’s leadership. Soror Spotlight: Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter’s – Beverly Mathis On Oct. 3, 2015, Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter’s Soror Beverly Mathis was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Education, in Las Vegas, Nev. Throughout her career, Soror Mathis has played a large part in the education of many youth in Southern Nevada. Dr. Mathis presently serves as Director of Literacy, Leadership & Community Engagement, formally known as, Clark County READS for The Public Education Foundation. Through this service, she facilitates collaborations between Clark County School District, Prime Six Schools, and Literacy Services on behalf of The Public Education Foundation. She also serves as an active member of the School-Community Partnership Program Advisory Council and chairs the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency. SOROR SPOTLIGHT Soror Spotlight: Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter’s – Carolyn Williams Getridge Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter’s Soror Carolyn Williams Getridge was elected to the Board of Directors of Cambium Learning Group, a publicly traded company headquartered in Dallas, Tex., becoming the first African-American woman to hold the position. Prior to being elected to the board, she served as senior vice president of strategic initiatives and led the company’s work in large school districts across the country. Soror Spotlight: Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter’s – Olivia Williams Recently, Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter’s Soror Olivia Williams was appointed to the Oakland Housing Authority Resident Advisory Board. The board interacts with the Oakland Housing Authority Commissioners Board and residents living in affordable housing subsidized by HUD. Her duties include: attending Neighborhood Leaders Institute classes and promoting the Oakland Housing Authority motto of “MAKING TRANSITIONS WORK.” She has a deep concern for the welfare of those who are not able to provide for themselves and families. She’s the past president of San Diego Alumnae Chapter, member of the San Diego Section of the National Council of Negro Women, and the Southeast Cluster Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary. SOROR SPOTLIGHT Soror Spotlight: San Bernardino-Riverside Area Alumnae Chapter’s – Patricia Doucet In keeping with the Sorority’s commitment to Social Action, Soror Patricia Doucet has made a personal commitment to advocate for individuals with disabilities. Raised in Bloomington, IN, she graduated from Indiana University and became an Indiana State Correctional Officer. Subsequently, she worked as a case manager with the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons, and was later promoted to Discipline Hearing Officer. Two months prior to testing for law school, Patricia suffered a stroke. Through intense physical therapy and determination, she’s become a vocal advocate for individuals with disabilities. Bailey, 17th National President, is the 14th honoree of Therapeutics Health Services’, Alvirita Little Award, for her many years of hard work and dedication at all levels of Washington State Public Schools as well as her constant focus on equality in education for students in Washington State and beyond. The Alvirita Little Award is given to individuals for their selfless dedication and tireless commitment to help children, youth, adults and families at-risk. Alvirita Little was a colleague of Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell and many of Delta’s first public service projects resulted from their longtime collaboration. Portland Alumnae Chapter Soror Florence Mills Morton The last charter member of Beta Psi/ Portland Alumnae, Soror Florence Mills Morton, entered into Omega Omega on June 28, 2015. A native of Portland, Ore., she was born June 19, 1922 and initiated into Alpha Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, which made her eligible to be the tenth Delta needed in Portland to Charter the Beta Psi Chapter on March 24, 1945.

San Bernardino-Riverside Alumnae Chapter Soror Miatta Obefumikeh Natalie Massaquoi Soror Miatta Massaquoi entered into Omega Omega on Jan. 6, 2016. She is remembered as one of our brightest lights – devoted daughter, loving sister, loyal soror, and leader in the community. Miatta was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in 2007 as a member of Upsilon Gamma Chapter on the campus of California State University, San Bernardino. Miatta will always be one of our chapter’s most delightful members.

Seattle Alumnae Chapter Soror Annie Hughley Soror Annie Hughley transitioned into Omega Omega on Feb. 21, 2016. She was born March 9, 1941 in Hissop, Coosa County, Ala. and moved with her family to Seattle when she was five. A graduate of Franklin High School, she matriculated at the University of Washington , earning her bachelors’ and master’s degrees in Education and taught first grade in the Lake Washington School District from 1973 until her retirement in 2005. Soror Hughley was initiated into the Seattle Alumnae Chapter in 1988.

Seattle Alumnae Chapter Soror Marilyn Schultz Sutherland Soror Marilyn Schultz Sutherland, a charter member of the Seattle Alumnae Chapter, entered into Omega Omega Chapter on June 24, 2015. She was initiated into the Alpha Omicron Chapter in 1978 and quickly became a good friend of Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell. Soror Sutherland earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Sociology from Portland State University and did her graduate studies at Seattle Pacific University, majoring in Christian Ministries. She was the administrator and coowner of several nursing homes and rental properties in the Seattle area as well as a publisher of The Pacific Leader, a community newspaper. Soror Sutherland often referred to herself as ‘a professional volunteer’ and used her considerable administrative and organizational talents to advance the work of Delta. Throughout her active years with the Seattle Alumnae Chapter, she chaired or participated on several committees and chapter projects. In addition to her work for Delta, in 1990, Soror Sutherland became the 10 th National President of the Links, Inc. and is credited with the development of a strategic plan that guided the growth and development of the organization through the 1990s and into the 21st century. In recognition for her services in the Links, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jack and Jill of America, Seattle Foundation, Seattle Opera Foundation, and the Seattle First Baptist Church Corporation, Seattle Mayor Norman Rice, proclaimed Nov. 4, 1990 as Marion Schultz Sutherland Day.
