President’s Message

ASID TEXAS GULF COAST CHAPTER

The chapter has been on the move hosting and planning multiple events for the membership throughout the fall and winter months. I hope you have been a part of them either as an attendee or committee volunteer. The Holiday Showhouse committee successfully produced a fabulous showhouse in record time, thanks to the diligent committee chairs and the enthusiastic group of designers and vendors who volunteered their time, creativity, and products. Thank you to Shundra Harris, Donna Jarnigan and Donna Vining for chairing the Showhouse Committee.

I attended The Presidents Forum in Los Angeles during January, and I am happy to report that our chapter is recognized as one of the strongest chapters in the country! I was asked to give a brief presentation on our “Adopt a Student” program because it has been so successful. Our National organization is encouraging other chapters to start their own version of the program. Congratulations to Larry Boykin and Pam Cortes for developing this nationally recognized program! Please consider participating by adopting your own student at www.adoptadesignstudent.org. The chapter Board and committee chairs completed their leadership training in January. The session was led by Kim Sawyer and included discussion on successful leadership styles and conflict resolution. Thank you to Cosentino for hosting our meeting in their beautiful showroom. February brought the hugely successful “For the Love of Design” evening at the Bell Tower in the Heights. Thank you to Pam Cortes, Larry Boykin, and Ray Levy for chairing the event that included 38 Industry Partner vendor booths, drawings, dinner, dancing and entertainment. Also, thank you to all of the IP members and designers who joined together to make this a night to remember. On February 18, the CEU Committee, chaired by Marie Dang and Araminta Alfaro, hosted a full Day of CEU’s at the Decorative Center. John Brooks, Eggersmann, Cabinet Innovations, Duralee, and Madeval opened their showrooms for the presentations, and Legrand provided lunch. Thank you to all who participated. Next up is the Student Career Day on April 1st. Kevin Hamby, Shasta Swift and their committee are working hard to make this career day the best ever. Most of the planning is completed; however, they need more designers to volunteer a few hours of their time on the day of the event. Please contact Kendra to sign up to help. Stay tuned for the Emerging Professionals program kick -off event this spring. This is a good time to review our chapter’s strategic plan and goals for the year. Always remembering the ASID Why Statement: ASID advances the profession and communicates the impact of interior design to enhance the human experience. Our goals include: 1) Be the core of the design community 2) Expand knowledge 3) Develop the practice 4) Create a performance-oriented organizational culture Every event, program, and process we plan relates back to these goals. We have accomplished a lot and have much more we are working to complete this year. Please volunteer and help us accomplish all of our goals. Your chapter needs you. Hope to see you soon! Martha Lurie, ASID President Texas Gulf Coast Chapter 2015-1016

ASID 2015 Holiday Showhouse By Donna M. Jarnigan, ASID, RID, Shundra Harris, ASID, RID, & Donna Vining FASID, IIDA, NCIDQ, RID, CAPS, REGREEN Trained TM This past Fall was a flurry of activity, going from no ASID-TGCC Showhouse planned for 2015, to remodeling a 12,500 sq. ft. home on the lake in The Woodlands. This could only have happened due to the wonderful people that came together to “make it so”. Your three Co-Chairs along with the Builder have lots of Showhouse experience. Our Builder/ Remodeler D.C. Peterson of Peterson Homebuilders and his right arms Karen and Sara have participated with ASID-TGCC in five ASID Showhouses. D.C. crews were working seven days a week. We had an incredible group of 19 Designers, Carla Aston, Crystal Reeves, Cheryl Baker, Nancy Charbonneau, Teena Caldwell, Andrea Garrity, Jillian O’Neill, Cecilia Pacheco, Donna Vining, Veronica Solomon, Jamie Haskins, Rhonnika Clifton, LaTrice Gentry-Brooks, Garlaine Kelly, Amy Salazar, Lauren Prestridge, Sharon Staley, and Donna Jarnigan. Several of the Designers have participated in many ASID Showhouses bringing a depth of experience, and others for just the first time. All of these professionals did wonders in such a short time. Did I mention ASID Industry Partners? Nothing could happen without our wonderful, gracious and giving ASID Industry Partners! The first ‘call to participate’ went out to the Chapter in late August. The actual demo to completion took 10 weeks and move in started on November 30. A huge Thank You goes out to D.C., Karen, Sara, Santiago and all of their crew as well as to our Industry Partners! Our ASID Holiday Showhouse opened the first weekend in December, followed by the next two Thursdays through Sundays. We closed December 20th and moved out December 21 & 22. Whew! It was fast paced indeed, but truly a labor of love to get this house finished, decorated and toured in such a short period of time. We could not have done this without all of the participating Designers, Industry Partners, Chairs, Administrator, our builder D.C. Peterson with his staff, as well as all the subcontractors. We thank each and every one of you! As a team, we made it happen!

Established 1959

“We are the professionals for the professional” A new chapter in our history begins with the renovation of our building at 1631 West Alabama. This redesign and construction will allow us to bring all the components of Arden’s under one roof. As you may know, in early 2015, we launched a formal art gallery on Westheimer. We are now bringing fine art back to our West Alabama location.

M&M CARPET SHOWROOM

The new Arden’s promises to be a welcoming space that will allow us to provide fine art services efficiently. As well, the newly redesigned space will spotlight the work of our artists and also host openings and events. We will continue to feature the work of local artists Ted Cowart, Ken Elliott, Sunny McKinnon and others.

ASID Industry Partner News News and Events for the ASID Industry Partner Industry Partners and ASID Designers are an awesome team! I recently did a poll to see who to give the ASID Industry Partner Designer Appreciation Award to (a beautiful trophy and an open ended $1,500.00 travel voucher) and based on the feedback from you, our IP, we are being diversely given opportunities by our beloved designer family members. So to the Interior Designers reading this, THANK YOU! Reading all your names really warmed my heart. This tells me that you are truly working with us. Industry Partners, if you feel you are not getting enough ASID Designer referrals, call your fellow IP. Ask them who they can introduce you to and help you to grow deeper into this organization’s team minded framework. Our Industry Partner Peer Group is still growing. This is a great time to learn and grow as an active frequented IP within ASID. Contact Ray Levy of Sunbelt Window Film for more information. Membership has its privileges. We will hold another large group meeting at the ASID office this spring or early summer. Check your inbox!

More Speed Selling? I am considering doing a couple more Speed Selling events in the time I have left as your director. Do not auto delete those emails! I will send word ASAP! It will be at the same location as before, and we will have a great opportunity for you to meet more wonderful Designers. ASID Online Calendar! USE IT! – want your event to be well attended, be sure you do not plan your event on the same night someone else has! It’s fast, free and easy. No Brainer. Want more traffic in your showroom? Plan or host an event; offer a CEU. Be sure you plan realistically, and do not overdue it. Designers are very busy so they have to be careful on how many events they can attend before it adversely affects their business and personal life. When in doubt call our ever amazing administrator Kendra Benson at the TGCC ASID office! 713-626-1470 I am here to serve YOU! So I may do my best job, please send me your ideas and thoughts on how YOU and ASID can better be one! Call or Email me. 713-937-0127 larry@imageelectric.net
