Dear Fellow Members, reetings from your ASID Georgia Chapter President!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Janie K. Hirsch, ASID J. Hirsch Interior Design, LLC 404.395.3711 President@ga.asid.org

Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and that you are ready for a fantastic 2016. I see great things for ASID and our members this coming year and I hope that you all share in this feeling.

President-Elect Craig Anderchak, ASID VeenendaalCave, Inc. 404.881.1811 x246 President-elect@ga.asid.org

Since my last letter, we enjoyed an inspiring evening at The Estate and Gardens for Storytellers. Thank you to all of our amazing speakers for sharing their personal stories with us. You wowed us with your stories, photos, travels, designs, and so on. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing every one on you. Thank you also to our Industry Partners for their support and enthusiasm and all that you bring to the table. We always appreciate every one of you.

Financial Director Steve Hart, Allied ASID Heery Design 404.946.2138 Finance@ga.asid.org Membership Director Luisa Corrales, Allied ASID 678.595.3413 Membership@ga.asid.org Professional Development Darren Joel, Industry Partner of ASID TecnoSedia 404.810.9081 ProfessionalDevelopment@ga.asid.org

With Storytellers, I was so proud and privileged to be able to announce that the GA Chapter of ASID was one of only twelve chapters selected to be a part of the inaugural class for One Voice. This is a program that National initiated to write laws for our right to practice and get them passed in the state of Georgia over the next three to four years. This is a huge honor and we will learn more about One Voice over the next several months and years to come.

Programs Director (Director-At-Large) Lyndsy Woods, Allied ASID 404.474.2055 At-Large@ga.asid.org

If you have not done so yet, please text “One Voice” to the number 52886 to register for future information. It will ask you three question and this will help National know how much support we have in the state in moving forward. I ask all designers and Industry Partners to be a part of this important initiative. Please join me in designing our future through One Voice.

Communications Director Chris Socci, Allied ASID C. Socci Inc. Interiors 404.414.5874 Communications@ga.asid.org Student Representative Macy Dwyer, Student ASID 770.561.3845 StudentRep@ga.asid.org

December brought Red & Green Scene and a great time with festive music, great food, and plenty of cocktails. A fun night was had by all. We had Gumbo & Gab in the ASID office sponsored by Sam Hebert from Fiber Seal. I enjoyed meeting some of our members while sharing in great food and chatting about how to get the most out of your membership. Look to join me for some great food at the next lunch.

Student Representative Co-Chair Morgan Bradley, Student ASID 770.862.4071 mbradl22@student.scad.edu

In January, I head off to Los Angeles for the ASID Presidents’ Forum and I look forward to sharing more information about oour industry and ASID as a whole. We have Student Day on January 22nd and with a charrette competition planned for our students. In March, I hope you will join us for the Second Annual Art Auction that will benefit the Legacy Campaign and Dwell With Dignity, a great cause that has touched so many lives here in Atlanta. Let’s make this year great and I look forward to seeing you all soon. As always, please feel free to reach out to me, or any of the ASID Board of Director members.

Our systems incorporate a broad range of technologies that empower our clients to effectively communicate their message both internally and externally. Our strict focus has allowed us to refine a process of design and implementation that results in the delivery of highquality, easy-to-use, reliable systems.

On the cutting edge of collaboration in the workplace, Avyve strives to look for the right tools to enhance productivity between teams both in the same office and across the country. We believe that SMART has delivered a simple but compelling solution with their SMART kapp whiteboards. It is now easier than ever to walk up to a whiteboard and collaborate with remote users in a powerful way. SMART kapp allows users to instantly transfer what is written on the board to any web enabled device, share this content in real-time via the mobile application to anyone, and then capture and save anything written or drawn on the board in JPEG or PDF format, to the cloud or to USB. In the past, doing all of these actions would require different types of software and hours of training. With kapp, the end user does not have to learn complicated whiteboarding software to start collaborating. Instead, SMART kapp offers the same walk-up and use experience of a regular dry erase board. SMART kapp provides a simple but powerful collaboration tool that keeps your team on the same page - no matter where they are or how they work.

Avyve is a team of audio-visual industry veterans headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, that have designed and integrated hundreds of presentation systems for corporations, universities and the federal government.

Hospitality design is especially enjoyable because we aren’t just working on an interior. We’re also sharing our vision for an overall look and brand that can help build customer loyalty. A strong brand is one of the keys to success for any business. It conveys a message and unique identity that should be in sync with all facets of a company’s image.

“I have always had this passion for design, fashion and the arts. If I had the time, I would be designing clothing, textiles, furnishings, and interiors. As a matter of fact, I am hoping that one day I can figure out how to do all of that, because I feel that all of my passions are related, like branches from the same tree.

Top Quality Solid Wood that is Built to Last

MICHAEL HABACHY | feat u re co n t i n u e d

Most interior design firms tend to find a niche, but I truly enjoy creating beautiful spaces for a wide range of commercial and residential clients. Our projects include everything from restaurants and spas to modern homes and multi-family towers. We help devise a cohesive brand strategy by designing graphics, supervising art direction, and more. For instance, we love commissioning an artist to create a signature mural or sculpture for a restaurant that diners will identify with the brand. Creating a mood or atmosphere that’s reinforced on multiple platforms forms memorable impressions. Royal Oriental Cabinetry’s goal is to supply our valued customers with a superior product made from the highest quality materials available. It is our sincere hope that our clients derive a lifetime of enjoyment and satisfaction from having our cabinetry in their homes.

Many factors come into play when designing a hospitality project, which can make the process quite challenging. One of the biggest is budget. Even the most upscale projects are all about final costs. Many businesses want the

look of luxury, but because of the scale of their projects, are not willing to pay per square foot residential prices.

TRANSFORMING FASHION Dutch Designer, Iris van Herpen is revolutionary in contemporary fashion. Her futuristic fashion is a combination of craftsmanship and innovation. This fall, van Herpen made her North American debut at the High Museum of Art. The exhibition invites guests to see a rare view of the work and process of one of the most ground-breaking fashion designers of today. Forty-Five breathtaking outfits from fifteen collections are displayed in this unveiling show entitled: Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion. Iris van Herpen uses innovative materials, cutting edge technology, including 3d printing, and meticulous craftsmanship to express her bold point of view. Iris van Herpen’s designs seek to portray the character and emotions of a woman, and the unpredictable, at times unnoticed movement within nature. van Herpen is also known for her collaborations with various artists and architects such as Phillip Beesley in which they defy the slogan “Form follows function.” For van Herpen ‘form’ complements and changes the body, movement, and emotion. Form drives the structure and materials to maximize tension and movement. Iris van Herpen ultimately shares with us that by combining old techniques with a pioneering voice the options for design are endless.

Craig Anderchak, ASID By

Haley Morgan, Allied ASID and Jessica Kreunen, Allied ASID

1.

VeenendaalCave is known for designing the most innovative commercial spaces – how does your team brainstorm for a new project?

Every project has a unique design approach. We learn as much as we can about the client, their product, and their work process. We look for the thread in how they present themselves to the world. Their office space, product branding, mission statement, values, organizational requirements.

2.

Being that you are our current ASID Georgia President-Elect, what is one of your biggest goals you wish to achieve in your year as President?

It is my goal to advocate, promote, and celebrate great interior design in Georgia. Great Design happens here! We have one of the largest ASID chapters and it’s is time that we become a recognized design leader in the US. Be on the lookout for exciting events, public and media outreach, and continuation of the ASID One Voice Campaign.

3.

What are some of exciting trends that have been occurring in corporate design?

The time of private and open office within a vanilla box without a personality are gone. When one arrives in today’s office the company’s mission and ideals have to be apparent. One should get a sense of the industry, product, or service that the company produces or sells just by being in the space. Experience Design is dominating the design process.

4.

Which design period or movement from the past do you enjoy incorporating into modernday projects?

It depends on the client, but my guiding principal is to keep it honest. What are aesthetic goals of the client? What type of building is it? When was it designed and by whom? What is the experience sequence when arriving? I am currently influenced by the post-modern revival movement and the resurgence of the Interior Design of the 1980’s. Brass is back and it’s holding hands with Ettore Sottsass.

5.What inspired you to pursue

commercial interior design?

It’s not a “what” it’s more of a “who”. David Butler – Florida State University. David welcomed me into the interior design program at Florida State University in 1994. I have never looked back or regretted jumping into the deep end!

6.

How have you seen corporate floor plan evolve?

the

Perimeter offices and high workstation cube farms have become open collaborative environments that are tools for working. I attended the funeral of the workstation panel at Neocon 2012. It was as nice funeral, with lots of flowers. I expect that we will see the death of the office in the next five years and then the death of exclusive reserved desk space in ten years. We have designed several workspaces without traditional offices or reserved desking. co ntinued

7.

What advice would you give an emerging professional to our industry?

Be a sponge. Work with honesty and integrity. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Learn how to have a difficult conversation. Arrive early and stay late. Learn how to blur the lines between your job, your family, and your hobbies. Be humble and learn the art of listening before speaking.

9.

Many designers do not realize ASID GA has approximately 60% commercial designers. How has ASID played a role in your commercial design profession?

I found ASID while attending classes at Florida State University. I never left or felt the need to leave. ASID has been my partner within every stage of my career and I have leaned on the organization for guidance over the years.

your best work to the client?

We tend to structure teams based on strengths to ensure project success. A creative focused person is paired with a management minded person. Every project is structured with a yin and yang approach.
