You know it’s snowing hard when … the Weather Network comes to you!

Weather Network personality Kelsey McEwen and fellow storm chaser Shawn Legg were out and about Drumheller on Thursday morning doing stand-ups describing the spring storm. While doing one live feed, they borrowed a snow shovel from Janice Burke at Over the Rainbow and commenced to help clear the sidewalk. It didn’t last for long, however, as the snow continued to pile up in just minutes. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Stettler man gets 1-year community sentence for possession of 2.3 kilos of pot Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Stettler man was given a 12-month conditional sentence order after pleading guilty to moving more than two kilograms of marijuana. Jason Snodgrass, 38, was in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, March 15. He had pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafďŹ cking on a previous date and had returned for sentencing.

The court heard how on February 16 of last year, the RCMP was patrolling Highway 21 when they observed Snodgrass in a white pick-up truck travelling north. Police noticed some erratic driving and dim taillights. When police stopped Snodgrass they noted he had trouble ďŹ nding his documentation. They also smelled a strong odor of fresh marijuana. They discovered a small amount of marijuana, as well as some

rolling papers and a grinder. Upon a further search, RCMP discovered a backpack with anabolic steroids and a storage container with six bags of marijuana in it. The total weight of the marijuana discovered was 2.392 kilograms. The RCMP also discovered $1,400 in cash and two cell phones with messages relating to the drug trade. Snodgrass had no previous record and had received a favourable presentence report. Defense

for Snodgrass, Alain Hepner of Calgary said his client has a history of using marijuana for pain relief and was not a supplier, but simply a courier. Federal Prosecutor Colin Kloot and Hepner were joined in their recommendation for a 12-month conditional sentence order. For the ďŹ rst 12 months, Snodgrass is to remain under house arrest, and for the remainder of his sentence, he is to abide by a curfew.

Defense for Rideout applies to have committal overturned Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The arraignment of a man charged in a double murder in Hanna has been adjourned for roughly two months as his defense attempts to have his client’s committal for ďŹ rst degree mur-

der quashed. Curtis Rideout was charged in March of last year with second-degree murder in relation to the death of his father Bruce Rideout and ďŹ rst degree murder in the death of Linette Euteneier. Rideout was in Court of Queen’s Bench in Jan-

uary for his preliminary inquiry. There, Judge Grieve ruled that Curtis Rideout be committed to trial as charged. Rideout was to be arraigned on Thursday, March 7, however defense for Rideout, Hugh Somerville, indicated he is planning to make an

application to have his committal quashed. He said all of his arguments were already on the record, being introduced in the preliminary hearing. The next court date for Rideout is May 2.

The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is moving forward after another successful year. Chamber members met on the evening of March 21 for the annual general meeting. While there, they were given an update on the Chamber’s activities for the new year and elected five board members to fill vacant positions. Seven nominees were given to fill the vacancies. Five new board members were elected to the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce board on March 21. Deputy Mayor Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk (centre) swore in new board members Ryan Sem-

Mah, John Shoff of Reality Bytes, and Ryan Semchuk of 99.5 Drum FM for three year terms and Elaine Piwin of RBC for a one year term. The board positions, such as the new president, have yet to be decided. It was a busy year for the Chamber. One of the biggest new events was to reinstate the Small Business Awards during Small Business Week in October. “I really appreciate the return of the Small Business Awards and I hope we keep them going,” said Ed Mah, 2012 Chamber president. The World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Grant continued to support community initiatives. In 2012, the Legacy Grant gave back $64,856 to the Badlands Community Facility, Pioneer Trail Society, Rowley Community Association, 1st Drumheller Scouts, Homestead Museum, Nacmine Community Association, Drumheller Community

Football Association, and Badlands Search and Rescue. “We gave money back to the community. We are very proud to continue to do that,” said Heather Bitz, general manager of the Chamber. The annual Chamber Golf Tournament was another success, with $7,100 donated to Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta as well as providing scholarships to one student each from Drumheller Valley Secondary School and St. Anthony’s School. The Downtown Drumheller Committee held a number of events downtown last year, including the first year of the Family Fun Days. However, due to a lack of participation, the Committee dissolved late in 2012. Overall, the Chamber experienced a decline in revenue in 2012 compared to 2011. In 2011, they received $324,613, but in 2012 revenue dropped to $271,442. In addition, expenditures

increased from $288,719 in 2011 to $335,209 in 2012. Two major factors contributing to the difference was an increase in staff wages due to the return from maternity leave of general manager Heather Bitz and a loss of $43,248 for programs and events. The World’s Largest Dinosaur saw a small increase in net income to $53,096 last year and the Tourist Information Centre remained stable, with a net loss of $26,456. The Chamber is also looking ahead to a big 2013. They will be hosting the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Provincial Conference and Policy Session. “We are heading into an extra special year. We are hosting the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Provincial Conference,” said Mah. “It will be a great time to showcase the Valley and our dedication to the chamber movement.”

termining factor of the team’s success next year as the majority of positions will need to be filled by new players. “If we get some guys who come ready to play and step-up and elevate their game, not to sound arrogant, but we expect to be the team to beat,” said Rasmussen. The trip will include several days of practice followed by a game against the St. Francis team from Honolulu. The team will also pay a visit to Pearl Harbor, attend a luau, and have some time to spend lounging at the beach during their time in Hawaii. Among the Titans players going on the trip is current Grade 11 student, Gage Berdahl who is excited for the upcoming excursion. Berdahl says he looks forward to playing the op-

position and having the opportunity to visit Hawaii as a tourist. “It’s going to be a good trip,” said Berdahl. Several fundraisers will be held by the Titans and donations will be accepted to help raise money for their trip. The public is encouraged to assist in anyway they can for the fundraisers which will include a bottle drive, battery drive, raffle ticket sales, and the possibility of a drive-in movie night which is still under consideration. The cost of a player’s ticket will be subsidized according to how much fundraising is done by that individual player. “Fundraising is an ongoing challenge for a trip like this,” said Rasmussen. “We’d like the guys to pay as little as possible to go on the trip.”

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, a chance encounter has you rethinking what you want to accomplish in the next few weeks. You are second-guessing all of your plans because of this surprise.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 A decision you made could have long-term effects, Scorpio. You’ll probably find that you have to do some damage control this week to get things back on track.

Food for

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist GERMAN POTATO SALAD

Here is a lovely potato dish to go along with your Easter ham, or whatever your tradition of choice is. The recipe says it can be served warm or room temperature. Initially, I had planned to serve it at room temperature because I was doing a “fix it and forget itâ€? meal. In the end, I chose to heat it in the oven along with the roast that was almost done. I was glad I did because I think the heat made the creaminess of the dish more appealing. Because most of the German potato salads have celery in them, I think you could substitute celery soup for the chicken one to add that nice flavor to it. 6 slices bacon, browned and crumbled ž cup chopped onions, sautĂŠed in the bacon drippings 1 can cream of chicken soup Âź cup water 2 Tbsp. cider vinegar ½ tsp sugar 4 cups par-boiled potatoes, cubed Fresh parsley Blend all ingredients together before adding potato to the mixture. Pour into a slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours.

Easter blessings to one and all!

Dragons keep playo drive alive Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Dragons have rekindled their playo hopes after winning 3-2 in overtime over the Brooks Bandits on Tuesday night. The game was a door-die situation for the Dragons. If they had lost, it would have meant the end of their season. The Drumheller Memorial Arena was packed once again and the energy in the building was palpable. In the previous three games, the Bandits had struck ďŹ rst, but in game four, the Dragons set the tone early, keeping the play in the Bandits’ end. The Dragons would gain a 1-0 lead at 12:09 into the ďŹ rst, while shorthanded. Bryton Mills charged from the Dragons end and stued

the puck in behind Bandits goalie Michael Frederick. Brodie Jamieson would increase the lead to 2-0 2:24 into the second period. However, two minutes later the Bandits would score one of their own to make the game 2-1. The Dragons held on to the lead for the remainder of the period, managing to contain the explosive oensive potential of the Bandits. In the third, the Bandits began to wear down the Dragons and gave Dragons goalie Adam Beukeboom more work than he had seen in the previous two periods. The Dragons kept the lead until 14:15 into the third when, Shane Pilling, o a face-o in the Dragons end, sent the puck past Beukeboom. The game was tied at 2.

Bryton Mills had a monster game on Tuesday, scoring both the opening and gamewinning goals, one assist, delivering a series of punishing hits, and earning a

The Bandits, renewed from the goal, continued to pour on the pressure and the ďŹ nal two minutes of the third were played almost exclusively in the Dragons zone. After a short intermission, the game headed to overtime. The Dragons came out ďŹ red up. Their hard work paid o at 4:25 into overtime, when Bryton Mills sent a blistering shot through traďŹƒc to the back of the Bandits net. The stands erupted with cheers as the Dragons kept their playo drive alive. The ďŹ fth game of the series was to be held in Brooks on Thursday, but was rescheduled to Friday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in Brooks, due to the severe snowstorm that swept through Alberta on the original date.

The St. Anthony’s Sabres Senior Boys basketball team ended its season at Zones placing fourth at the tournament. The Sabres had a strong season, culminating in a 1A provincial honourable mention and a middle seed in the zone tournament in Rosemary on March 9 and 10. The Sabres were short handed, with only seven players on the bench for the competition. The Sabres went up against Cremona in their opening game. Cremona was scrappy but the Sabres won decisively 69-59. This put them up against Rosemary. The Sabres were able to stay close to Rosemary most of the game and even broke their press, however foul trouble and their short bench caused havoc for the Sabres. “We ended up playing with four players for over 5 minutes of the 4th quarter, due to the short bench, but still kept scoring. After the game, the Rosemary coach said the players were actually worried because they didn’t have a sizable cushion of a lead, which has not

happened all year against other 1A schools, and our defense was solid, said coach Dan Patterson. Rosemary won 89-49. This put the Sabres into the third place game where they faced Acme. A few missed free throws made the dierence as Acme went on to an 87-84 victory. The Sabres have potential to remain a tough team next season. While they are losing their top scorers, Tanner Borowicz and Brian Kosolofski, who led the team with effort and attitude, they still have a strong core returning next season.

The Sabres finished a strong season with a fourth place finish at zones. Members of the team include (back; l-r) coach Dan Patterson, Luis Pulvinar, Brian Kosolofski, Nathan Comstock, coach Emmanuel Doolittle, Travis Dietrich, Alvin Limosinero and Jesse Robinson, with (front; l-r) Jakub St. Jean and Tanner Borowicz. photo submitted

Cagers return for St. Anthony’s alumni game Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Generations of basketball players from St. Anthony’s School will be back on the court tonight to play in annual alumni game. This is the third annual event, which pits the current senior boys and girls teams versus previous players. The girls are on the court at 6:30 p.m. and the boys play at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 22. Athletic director at St. Anthony’s, Gavin Makse, says this is a fun event

where the young players can meet some of the older players who can attest to the importance of their time as a Sabres and being part of the team. The game typically sees players from teams going back to when St. Anthony’s reintroduced high school a few years ago, to last year’s graduates. Some have gone to play at the college level. This is the second year the event has been held in the new school. “We’re there to help each other out and have some fun, said Makse.
