The Hussar Community Hall is one step closer to realizing its new look, thanks to a $150,000 donation from Cenovus Energy. On Wednesday afternoon, representatives of the company were at the Sundowner Senior Centre to make the presentation to the Hussar and District Hall Maintenance Society to support its renovation project. “At Cenovus we are committed to making sure that communities where we are living and operate are stronger be-

cause we are there,” said Mandy Bishop, Senior Advisor, Community Investment, Cenovus Energy. “We work with our community partners to build better futures together and we want to share in our success.” She stresses the importance of the hall to Hussar and its surrounding communities. The company also utilizes the hall for its monthly safety meetings. Bishop said she worked closely with the association to learn what their needs were. She explains that Cenovus’ community investment focuses on education,

been well maintained over the years, it was time for some upgrades. The association has already tackled some of the issues including storage space. The next phase will be an upgrade to its electrical, plumbing, washrooms and kitchen. Cenovus is supporting the kitchen renovation aspect of the project. This includes plumbing, replacing cupboards, and counters with modern and functional stainless steel fixtures. There will also be new oven and fridge space and a more functional layout. With this donation, they will be renaming the area the “Cenovus Kitchen.” “Our hall is a gathering place, like all halls are, for all ages, for clubs, wedding dances, showers, etc., our hall is used extensively,” said Kathy Dundas of the Hussar and District Hall Maintenance Society. “Thanks to Cenovus we are able to start this project a little sooner than we have planned, and on behalf of the Hussar and District Hall Maintenance Society and the whole of our community, we really appreciate your generous donation.” The Association has been working hard to complete the project. Earlier this year they were the winners of the UFA Rural From the Roots Up Contest and received $50,000. Chinook Credit Union also contributed $25,000 to the project.

It has been a true honour to see him steer our economy through turbulent waters and bring the budget back towards balance. When travelling across Canada during this past year’s pre-budget consultations, I saw firsthand how widely respected Jim Flaherty is as a steady hand on the tiller. Ag Society Board optimistic for 2014 The newest board of the Drumheller & District Agricultural Society is looking forward to this year, with site improvements and a variety of events scheduled. Despite its hurdles, the local non-profit Ag Society seems to have its nose to the grindstone in getting things done. A casino fundraiser put $10,000 in the bank for the society, and they’re working on improving the grounds with a spring cleaning blitz that includes painting, and generating new ideas for adding some revenue. “We’re in the midst of putting together a sponsor package to help fund some of this (projects/events),” said Ag Society President Bryan Telford. Telford said they are working on events to get the public’s interest back into the barn. First Vice-President Rhonda Gill has been working on securing bookings for a Spring Fair for the barn, similar to the Christmas fair held there this past December. “I was approached by people (vendors), so decided to try something different,” she explained, adding the Ag Society has a few different committees working on projects. In addition to a number of weddings, the stampede grounds this year will be hosting the RCMP Musical Ride in July, the “Loud As Hell” metal concerts for September long weekend, BCA pool finals, and four dates for the stock cars. The “Boogie in the Badlands” car show is scheduled again for the downtown core in May. Earlier this week, the society learned “Tough Mudders” is coming to Drumheller and the Society will be a host partner. Telford said they’re working with the chuckwagons, but they can’t get a date set, and they’re also wanting to schedule miniature bulls for the August long weekend. The miniature bulls are a smaller version of the actual rodeo bulls for youth aged 7 to 17. Telford said

he was thinking about mutton busting at the same time as they would go hand in hand, but it depends on dates and dollars to get it off the ground. “What would the area like to see? What would interest them to come up here?” Telford asks.

Cindy Woods, Development Officer, Town of Drumheller ARTISTS SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERISM = VOLUNTEERS SUPPORTING ARTISTS! The FCSS Coordinator from the Town of Drumheller is trying to coordinate a Silent Auction to recruit new volunteers for the community. The idea is to try and find artists who would be willing to donate a piece of their art to a community silent auction. The purpose of the silent auction is to recruit new volunteers and / or extend current Volunteers’ hours of volunteering. These individuals would bid a number of volunteer hours in order to receive that actual piece of art. As a silent auction the highest bidder (most hours offered for volunteerism) would win the art. We would encourage youth to submit both their art and their time as well. The Vision for this auction is to have the art displayed for the length of the auction in the Badlands Community Facility Art Gallery, thereby providing the artist with a free showing of their work. Any artist who donates a piece of art would receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the art donated. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you would be interested in donating art to our initiative, please contact Jennie Lutz at 403-823-1365 or email her at jlutz@dinosaurvalley.com The Silent Auction will take place from April 7th to April 11th.

With its approval of the 2014 Capital Budget Monday, March 10, Drumheller Town Council has budgeted to install a new waterslide at the Town’s Aquaplex. There is $500,000 earmarked in the Capital Budget for the installation of a new waterslide for the facility. Director of Infrastructure for the Town

of Drumheller Al Kendrick has forwarded some preliminary designs onto Mayor and Council for review. “Two of the designs show the waterslide going outside and coming in again, so that may free up some area for a kid’s pool, said Mayor Terry Yemen. Yemen said the big test will be when they (the Town) sends out for tender. He adds there may be hope there’s a bit

more than a water- the waterslide by Sepslide included in the tember 2014. The Town is looking $500,000 - the Town is also looking at adding to do the construction

There is a gigantic baby shower for the children supported by the Morgan Jayne Project. Supporters of the project have launched their second annual baby shower. This has the goal to generating baby formula for families served by the Morgan Jayne Project. Since 2006, the project has supplied infant formula to help mothers in Roatan with HIV feed their newborn babies and stop the transmission of HIV from mother to child. In that time, it has literally saved hundreds of lives. The demand is very real and is never going away. To help replenish the shelves of Familias Saludables, which administers the project in Honduras, they launched the initiative and have the goal of raising 300 tins of powdered formula. Fred Makowecki, founder of the Morgan Jayne Project, says there are a number of suitable formulas out there, with the exception of soy-based products. He says Similac Advance is a versatile brand that works well. Tins can be dropped o at Western Chev or at Image Crafters in Drumheller. He adds that a $5 donation to ship the product is helpful. He says one way people can be proactive is simply ordering formula online from Amazon and having it shipped to Florida to be transported to Roatan. Those wising to explore this option can send the formula to: Fundacion Sol C/O Valerie Nelson 10025-116 Way Medley Florida USA 33178

Spring show sales surge in Rosebud Audiences looking forward to The Diary of Anne Frank at Rosebud Theatre Submitted | inSide Drumheller

2014 is o to a fantastic start at Rosebud Theatre beginning with their best-selling spring show to date – The Diary of Anne Frank. Playing March 28 to May 17, this production is an inspiring play, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, based on the true story of the Frank family during World War II. Described through the writings of a young girl who saw the good in people despite the awful things that were going on around her, it provides audiences with a unique perspective on the war. The Diary of Anne Frank is similar to stories such as Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, and West-Side Story because it is so well-known, but it continues to be compelling even though audiences know what happens. It becomes about the journey and inspiration for many. Anne is the voice of

optimism and hope in terrible condition; as she writes in her diary, “in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. This is the second time that Rosebud has produced The Diary of Anne Frank, but that was sixteen years ago and according to Artistic Director, Morris Ertman, “there are stories we read again and again because they continue to be relevant. The Diary of Anne Frank is just such a story. It’s the story of a girl with such an

extraordinary life force that her spirit survived the most brutal atrocity in the last 100 years. Her story inspires us to have faith in the things

that keep us together rather than despair in the events that drive us apart. Of course we want to engage such a story again and again.â€? Stowed away in a secret annex, Anne Frank recorded the true account of her family living more than two years in hiding from the Nazis during World War II. Confronting the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit and determination, Anne Frank emerges from history as an intensely gifted young girl whose spirit would not be stied by her circumstance. Her insistent belief in the goodness of others is a humbling, yet uplifting reminder of the bright lights that shine even in our darkest times. Director Paul Muir has big plans on the staging and how he will help connect the audience to the characters in the production. `“The play is set up so beautifully in that the audience is only privy to a view on the world from the perspective of those in the annex. So it’s like we get to experience some of the action of WWII Amster-

dam through the eyes of Anne and her family. We will hear what Anne hears down on the street below along with the chimes from the cathedral, and we will see what Anne sees as she strains to look out her window. We will only receive news of the world through Miep and Mr. Kraler when they come to bring food and supplies. “In the end, this is a story about the fact that hope endures even in the face of impossible odds. Anne makes it clear that, even with all that has happened, she is choosing to believe that people are good at heart. I expect that audiences will leave the theatre feeling both challenged by Anne’s faith in humanity, but also encouraged that if Anne is able to have that faith, then maybe we can too.â€? The Diary of Anne Frank plays March 28 to May 17, Wednesdays through Saturdays at the Rosebud Theatre Opera House and tickets are selling quickly. WORKS Teacher appreciation from students Addy Frelinger, left, and Andrea Pestano show a poster outside Sharon Walker’s Grade One class at Greentree Elementary. To show their appreciation for their teachers, students traced their handprints and wrote inside the hands something they thought was good about their teacher. The hands were then used to make a poster outside of each teacher’s classroom, as shown, at the elementary school. The Greentree School Council organized Teacher Appreciation week for March 17 to 21, 9with a number of parents providing treats for the teachers throughout the week. inSide photo Michele Scott

labelled, “a team dinner.” In July 2013, the CEO expensed a $150 tuxedo rental as a hospitality expense to attend the Banff Center’s Midsummer Ball. The person in question earns $240,000/ yr in base salary plus $150,000 in benefits. In response to my questions on the first day, the Minister attempted to outline the entire Tourism industry and its value to Alberta in an attempt to justify the luxurious expense claims by the CEO. On the second day of questions to the Minister, he was asked why someone who is paid $390,000 a year needs us to rent him a suit. Help me out here, we pay bureaucrats exorbitant wages, and they’re telling us that taxpayers should dress them as well. Why? Again the Minister went into a diatribe about the Tourism industry’s value to Alberta, avoiding the issue completely. After two straight days of frustrating non-answers provided by the Minister, I decided to drive my point home to him about how inappropriate and wrong these expense claims really are. To that end, I donned a rented Tuxedo for $130 that I paid for myself. Judging from the responses provided by the Minister, it appears the mentality of the Alberta government is that they are indeed entitled to their entitlements. In a letter addressed to the Auditor General, I have requested that these expenses be investigated to determine their legitimacy. In the letter, I expressed that my fear is the expense policy enacted by the Government of Alberta is not misunderstood, but being deliberately misinterpreted. I hope the Auditor’s office can get to the bottom of these expenses and reassure Albertans that their tax dollars are being used economically and prudently.

Parents spend thousands of dollars a year in childcare expenses, so being able to claim them on your taxes can mean a sizeable deduction. But like any deduction, there are rules and guidelines for what you can and can’t claim. Here are some of the most common considerations: No receipt, no claim: Your childcare provider must give you a receipt for childcare expenses. Individuals who offer childcare must provide their Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) on the receipt. If your childcare provider refuses to provide a receipt, you cannot claim the expenses. All in the family: If your mother or mother-

in-law is caring for your children, you can claim the amount you pay her as childcare expenses. However, she also has to provide a receipt with her SIN and report the money on her income tax. Remember, you can earn up to $11,038 federally in 2013 before you have to pay income taxes. Minors don’t count: If you pay your 12-year-old child to look after brothers and sisters, this is not an eligible childcare expense. Lower-income claims: The higher-income spouse can only claim childcare expenses in specific situations; for example, periods during which the lower-income spouse is in school, jail or in hospital. Otherwise, the childcare expenses have to be claimed by the lower-income spouse, and expenses cannot be transferred even when the entire amount cannot be used. Maternity leave in-

come: Childcare expenses can only be claimed against employment income and other earned income. And they have to be claimed by the lowerincome spouse. Maternity leave benefits are not considered earned income for the childcare claim, and generally someone on maternity leave will be the lower income earner. Summer camps: You may claim only the childcare portion of this expense, so you should ask your provider for a detailed receipt. Lunch-time supervision: If you pay to have your child stay at school to eat lunch, this supervision fee is considered an eligible childcare expense. However, you cannot include the cost of food. The most important thing is to keep your receipts. Without receipts, you cannot claim any childcare expenses.

The DVSS Senior Dynos won bronze in their zone last Saturday night with a convincing defeat over Black Diamonds OilďŹ elds. The Dynos hosted the 2A South Central Zones on March 14 and 15, where eight of the top teams in the area battled for a shot at provincials. The Dynos were upset in league play, but came out with focus to take on Three Hills in their ďŹ rst game last Friday night. They managed to hold o Three Hills 8376. This put them on the championship side of the draw to play Hugh Sutherland School from Carstairs. They were strong and ended up beating the Dynos 10277. Despite this, the team regained it’s composure to play OilďŹ elds school from Black Diamond. The Dynos’ swarming press and hot three point shooting dominated the OilďŹ elds as they won 112-81. Matt Herman set a DVSS points record with 56 in this game. This ended their season.

of talent on the roster. “I think there was a lot of growth for many players over the year even with our Grade 12s who showed leadership and were a big part of what we were able to do throughout the season. I am looking forward to next year as there is a lot of potential that has yet to be reached with this team, said Messom.

Local pool sharks nearing end of season MIchele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller’s competitive pool league is preparing to wind things up for another year. The local branch of Big Country Amusements (BCA) year end tournament is just over a month away, scheduled this year for the end of April. The league has been playing with 24 teams since two dropped out earlier this year. Local league coordinator Ralph Veenhuis said the ďŹ nals will be held at the Stampede Barn, taking place over April 25, 26 and 27. Veenhuis said it’s a tight race to the ďŹ nish this year. “A lot of teams are close - anybody can win.â€?

One of the reasons the race could be close is because Drumheller has some high calibre players. “We’ve got some really good, top quality world wide players here,â€? Veenhuis said. The BCA website states all players must have their games completed by April 22 to compete in the year end pool tournament. The league fees players pay each week go into purchasing prizes for the league. Forty percent of the prizes are draw prizes, so any team can win, Veenhuis explains - the bottom team has won a houseboat trip the last few years. On the table this year are ďŹ ve Las Vegas trips, about ten houseboat trips, deep sea ďŹ shing trips, and golf trips.

Veenhuis said the League is basically an evening out, and it tries not to cater to just the best players. The type of pool the Drumheller league plays is eight ball. “It’s the most common game there is, North American wide, said Veenhuis. The Drumheller League follows CSI (Cue Sports International) rules, he explains. They are the group hosting the 2014 Las Vegas tournament at the Rio Inn and Suites. He said there about 10,000 people from all over the world involved in the tournament, with games spread across 400 pool tables. He notes the Drumheller league usually sends 40 players to the annual event.

Hard work and a little luck have brought the Drumheller Dragons to a place where they could advance to the South Division ďŹ nal tonight. The Dragons were taken right to the edge Tuesday night before closing out 6-5 in overtime in Game 4, and took a 3-1 series lead. “There was a lot of everything in that game last night,â€? chuckles Dragons coach Brian Curran. It was a back and forth game with Christopher Rauckman of the Dragons scoring two and half minutes in. However, the Eagles ended the period up 2-1. Just four and a half minutes into the second, Matt Saunderson tied the game, but again the Eagles bounced back with two goals. Troy Gedny put the Dragons back on the scoreboard. Just 53 seconds into the third period Trent Ouellette tied the game. The Eagles went

ahead, but Mitchell Cook found the net, assisted by Gedny, to force overtime. Three minutes into the extra period, Cook capitalized on his momentum and scored the winner, and the Dragons took a commanding lead in the series.

“I thought in the first seven or eight minutes of the game we were doing what we needed to do.

Brian Curran Dragons Coach

“I thought in the ďŹ rst seven or eight minutes of the game we were doing what we needed to do,â€? said Curran. â€œâ€ŚThe momentum switched big time and we were in a battle from hell. For the most part, I thought we had some times when we outplayed them, but they had more of those minutes last night. But I give our guys credit last night, we were resilient.â€?

While the Dragons have the opportunity to win the series at home tonight, Curran says it is going to be some work. “The way Andrew (Coach Milne) and the Eagles are, there is no way they are not going down without a ďŹ ght,â€? said Curran. “This is a whole dierent ballgame and they will come out working hard and I expect it to be a game where we are going to have to ďŹ ght for everything.â€? He says the key for the Dragons is to simply play their own game. “I think if anything, Canmore turned around and played our game against us last night at times. We’re the team that has to be the physical bump and grind team. We do have the ability to score, but we score by going to the dirty areas and out-battling them. That is what we have to get back to doing because that is what we are good at.â€? Game time is 7 p.m.
