I never knew I was a car guy. I mean how does one qualify as a car guy. I think that one of the things that I like about being a car guy is that if you have old cars, you will most likely know a little bit about turning wrenches. I just had a meeting with a gentleman who has become a good friend. He is a car guy for sure. He is a decade or two my senior, but so are many of my friends. He walked into Lavaggio with a big smile, saw my orange hat and introduced himself to me. Ends up, we know so many of the same people it is crazy. When talking to him, you just kind of notice how sure of himself he is. Not in a bad way, but in a way that he knows he can handle just about anything that comes his way. He seems to know about bit about cars, hotrods, sailing and the such...some of that is life experience and some of that is having the will or desire to just go for it. In any event, he is competent in most situations as it appears and I like that. Car guy and competency. I was doing some studio work the other day and had a random sampling of car guys with me. Some were race car guys, some were hot rod guys and some were offroad. Suffice to say, I just might have been "out-car-guyed" by this group of guys. Some very technical conversations took place and I found myself being the one who only knew the surface of what they were talking about. I think the first guy I wrote about, he kinds of speaks in a language that I can understand, technical but not too technical. He does that on purpose. The other guys, they got really wrapped up in talking about engines, ratios, fuel and air-delivery and even spring rate of shocks. Sure I have put motors in, transmissions, but these guys I am describing, they were really experience. Something comes with experience, that is understanding that sometimes people don't have the same experience level. That is kind of the magic of being a car guy, or even just a decent human being, sharing the knowledge. I have been lucky to be around a lot of people a lot smarter than me and people that seemingly care about other people. I have learned so much from them, by them being patient and walking me through whatever undertaking I had decided to take on. Sure You Tube is a great help, but, there is nothing like having someone experienced and qualified to assist. And then of course you can tell each other lies about racing and women as you work on the cars. A car guy. I supposed there are so many categories of car guys these days. There is the old school guy who loves his Holley DoublePumper and his cigarette. These are the real-deal car guys. They started off what we are doing now and even though we have fuel-injection and computers, they just can't stop loving the big bad sound of a solid-lifter big block and race gas. They have worked on more cars and re-conditioned parts and painted cars and ran from the cops when street racing all before there were Gopros and bragging rights were actually earned. If you built a car, you...actually built a car. They risked lfe and limb without seat-belts or air bags. Maybe they wore helmets, and fire suits were their dad’s long-john underwear. Some real tough guys. With the evolution of performance, new types of car guys entered the market. The guys that hate what they call “inefficient” American horsepower and they love the small motors with the twin-turbos. Efficient they call it. What used to be said was that there was “no replacement for displacement.” Nowadays a six cylinder twin turbo can outrun a lot of big block cars with ease.

These guys just love to break the stereotype of the traditional car guys and they look for every chance they get to prove the big block guys wrong. All the time they are grinning. They are tech savvy and are all about dialing in the computer in the car with their laptop as they race around. Now the big block guys, some of them have migrated to the coveted Chevy LS motor and with a twin turbo or a supercharger, they have developed the science and mastery of the LS Motor Platform. In any iteration, this is kind of the cross-breed between the Japanese motor guys and the American motor guys. Even the Ford guys can’t help deny that the LS motor might just be the best motor in the history of going fast cheap. Easy attaining seven hundred to well over a thousand horsepower with a LS motor is hard to deny... even for the bit turbo Nissan GTR guys. I could go on and on about the Mercedes guys how much torque their cars make and how the new Audi RS3 with a few mods could outrun just about anything on the road today, but I am going to ramble. I think the point is that being a car guy is more than about what you drive. It is the evolution of a mindset that you can always do something better. The quest to be faster than the other guy, the old-school guy, the exotic guy, the kid with the import or the European tuner, our cars make us evolve and to become more well rounded and intelligent. I cannot tell you how many times I have failed working on a car. How long I stared at something trying to figure out how to fix the issue. And them some experienced guy walks up and in two seconds tells me how to do it or just does it. And that is all about the experience. Sure there are the people who are well read and understand the theory, but tell me about the joy of putting a transmission in by yourself using jack-stands, borrowed jacks, pieces of wood, a hammer and a lot of sweat, frustration and busted knuckles. Those are all things car guys can laugh about at lunch, like a few of us did last week. We were all sitting at lunch, none of really knew each other and then it was on. The lot of us telling lie after lie about cars we have owned, people that we raced, problems we have had with cars. It was better than going to a shrink. The lies, the laughter and the friendships that were being built all because we had something in common, our passion for cars. One of the guys had built some really gnarly cars, and I asked him…”did you really build the cars?” He knew exactly what I was saying. He smiled and said yes. I replied “good, I could use some of your help.” I told him I was having some wiring issues with my Camaro and before I could finish he said, “we will get it running.” Notice the word “we”. It is not his car, it is not his problem, but, I am sure that if he has the time and I have the time, he will help me through my issue. That is what car guys do...perhaps it is in our DNA, perhaps it is a duty or perhaps it is because someone taught you how to wrench on cars. It might be the best form of bonding, learning and sharing...working through a project and waiting for the roar of that engine or to see the car you helped build drive by. I really can’t tell you where I am going with all of this, other than I have been around a bunch of really great people this last week. Supercar Sunday was incredible, my family is healthy, I have a roof over my head, and I am just greatful for each and every person in my life. And for my car family, you all have added so much value to my life. I would have never imagined I would know so many great people. I would have never imagined that I would have stood in a parking lot for almost twenty years every Sunday. But you know what...I wouldn't change it for the world. Fireball’s Art Gallery - A New Blend of Octane at the Murphy Article and Photos by Steve Geldman | Image Photo Motorsports | @ImagePhotoMotorsports

There have been many articles written in the past on our local Southern California Automotive museums. The Petersen Automotive Museum, Nethercutt Museum and Mullin Automotive Museum, to name just a few. Most likely many of you are familiar with these collections and have visited some, if not all. There just may be one other mind-blowing automotive museum you have overlooked. Located in Oxnard, literally just down the street

from the Mullin, lies a 30,000 square foot building whose residence is The Murphy Automotive Museum. Unlike the aforementioned collections, the Murphy focuses on 50’s and 60’s Americana, although the age range is much wider with a sprinkle of the international variety. Over 90 cars are currently on display, some are through donations and others on loan from private collectors. On the museum floor one will find vintage automobiles, such as a 1903 Oldsmo-

bile Curved Dash Runabout or at the other end of the spectrum, a modern day 2015 Dodge Challenger. In 2002, the museum was founded by Dr. Daniel Murphy, a Ventura neurosurgeon, who back in 1975 started a hobby of collecting Packard’s. Leasing a large commercial storage space, he soon invited his personal auto collecting friends to store their prized possessions under the same roof. You should now know where this story is headed. As more

collectors rented space and car inventory grew, some were eventually donated or sold to Dr. Murphy as owners grew older and retired. This naturally led to the beginning roots of the museum’s birth. One of those who rented space was David Neel, a Ventura businessman, who stored his 1966 Mustang. In 2014 Dr. Murphy stepped down from the museum’s Board as he handed the foundation off to Neel. Today, under Neel’s leadership, the auto museum has a dedi-


cated team of volunteers, including docents, those focus is educating the public on the automobile and its influence on American life. Programs, including special exhibits, continue on a regular basis. Besides automobiles, many car related antiques such as gas pumps, signage and other accessories are placed around the walking area. Two other big attractions at the museum are the vintage camping trailers, arranged in a very cool camp-like setting plus one of the largest HO Scale working model train displays in the area with over 26 miles of scale track. This leads us to an exciting event that happened recently at the Murphy. The Murphy now is the only known auto museum having an Art Museum dedicated to that of the automobile! Named after Fireball Tim Lawrence, the museums Art Curator, The Fireball Gallery grand opening was held the evening of May 11th with many automotive socialites, celebrities and the media in attendance. According to Fireball Tim, “Automotive artists have had a stigma that is about to change. This gallery is to exhibit automotive artist talent, give recognition, have a driving force of automotive related art and a place to celebrate the passion of the automobile as an art form�. Five artists launched the opening event which will run for the next three months, then new artists, as many as twelve at one time, will be represented thereafter on a quarterly basis. Talented artists celebrating this opening and currently on display were Photographer Wes Nielsen, Pinstripper Johnny Martinez, Illustration Artist Geoff Ombau, Painter Chris Garcia and lastly, a combined group of artists known as Bohemia Incorporated where a floor sculpture is on display. The current collection at the Fireball Gallery will be on exhibit through August 9th. The Murphy Automotive Museum is a Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, 100% volunteer based where not a single person is paid a salary. Museum membership is only $40 annually and entitles you and one guest unlimited visits for 12 months. Membership and general donations are tax deductible. If you have a special vehicle and like it to be on a temporary museum display, the Murphy just may proudly display your vehicle for others to enjoy. As a nonprofit, the museum operates on the generosity of their visitors and philanthropists. The donations collected are used to maintain the facilities and the classic cars.


The Murphy Auto Museum is located at 2230 Statham Blvd., Oxnard. Admission is by donation via cash or credit card. Adults $10, Children 12 and under as well as Active Military with ID are free. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Westlake Village Car Show & Street Festival Supports Many Local Causes The Westlake Village Street Festival & Car Show drew another record crowd to this annual event. Held on April 28th, the event was the 25th annual and organized by the Rotary Club of Westlake Village. This family friendly event

was held once again in the heart of Westlake Village along Lakeview Canyon Road. Estimated public attendance at this year’s day-long event was several thousand. In addition to the incredible Classic and Exotic

Car Show, the public enjoyed all the local vendors selling arts & crafts, craft beer, food, live musical entertainment, a kid’s zone, pet zone, and much more. The Classic and Exotic Car Show once again sold out in advance at 100 cars on exhibit and everyone seemed to really enjoy the festive atmosphere. All cars were

“judged” by the attending public who were provided ballots as they entered the Car Show section, thus the term People’s Choice Awards. At 3 p.m. awards were presented to the winners on a large stage. A total of 20 “Awards of Excellence” were handed out, including a “Best in Show” award to the car receiving the most votes from the public. This fun and family oriented entertaining event is one of the major fund raisers of the year for the Westlake Village Rotary. As all Rotary’s are nonprofit, who benefits from the monies derived from this



Street Festival & Car Show? At the upcoming Rotary Club “Annual Day of Giving” luncheon, to be held at the Westlake Village North Ranch Country Club, projected recipients who will benefit at this year’s event include the Borderline Bar & Grill victims, K9’s for Warriors, Feeding the Homeless, Meals on Wheels, our local Cancer Support groups, Boys & Girls Clubs and many more deserving organizations. Only Air-Cooled Porsches Wanted Story and Photos By Ted Lighthizer

Luftgekuhlt which means air-cooled in German is also the name for a Porsche air-cooled only car show featuring all models of Porsche cars from the 1950’s to 1998. All Porsche cars built from 1999 to today are water-cooled and need not apply. Luftgekuhlt or Luft for short, is now on its 6th show in as many years here in SoCal and it’s always held at a different location each year. Luftgekuhlt is the brainchild of two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans race winning driver Patrick Long and Southern California creative director Howie Idelson. This year’s show simply titled Luft 6 was

held on Saturday 5-11-2019 at the film back lots at Universal Studios Hollywood and it was a sell-out, with over 10,000 attendees. Everyone got to view up close, with no barriers, 470 air-cooled Porsches placed throughout the filming back lots of Universal Studios Hollywood, CA. After arriving at Gate 2 Universal Studios Hollywood, the entry point for Luft 6, you would have thought from the 1000’s of people lined up on the sidewalks that you were going to see rock stars like The Rolling Stones, but no these people had all paid $50 or more to see vintage Porsches,

21 years old and older. Once our tickets were scanned, we were free to go and explore the filming back lots which included a western town, early America small and big city backdrops with approximately 470 handpicked Porsches from 1952 to 1998 prominently displayed in and around the streets and storefronts. Excitement and amazement filled the air as Porsche fans from far and near came together to appreciate their beloved marque which is best remembered by its’ infamous tagline, Porsche, there is no substitute. Today’s sunny weather was excellent for those taking photos

of which most were. Everywhere you looked video or still pics were being taken by fans with video cams, digital SLR’s or cell phone cameras. One of my favorite back lots recreations was a Porsche Service Station circa 1950’s advertising “Air-Cooled Service”. Recently added to the film back lots is a full color 50ft. tall mural of some of the early horror films made at Universal Studios Hollywood like Frankenstein and Monster From The Black Lagoon etc. The majority of Porsches on display are owned by individuals from the vast SoCal area






although I noticed a dozen or more license plates from out of state as well. In addition to the Porsche owners cars on display, Rod Emory owner of Emory Motorsports located in North Hollywood, CA the creator of the world famous Emory Porsche 356 Outlaw cars over the last 23 years, had numerous hand built cars on display. Rod’s latest Porsche 356 Outlaw Coupe was also on display along with other Emory 356 Outlaw Porsches owned by the public. Another contributor to Luft 6 was Bruce Canepa, owner of Canepa Motorsports Museum and Automobile Restoration in Scotts Valley, CA. Bruce Canepa and staff will restore your supercar or Porsche to its best condition ever. Bruce is also a very competitive race car driver of vintage Porsche race cars and is often seen driving at the ROLEX Historic Automobile Races or Porsche Rennsport Reunions, both held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Canepa Motorsports Museum, displayed some of their many vintage Porsche race cars which included (2) Porsche 917’s, Paul Newman’s red Porsche 935 turbo, a Porsche 906 and my favorite car of the show from Canepa, a bright orange 1977 Porsche 934 turbo RSR the Weissach’s Turbo Chameleon a class winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1977 and 1981. Only 300 Porsche 934 turbo RSR’s were manufactured and the asking price was $43,000. Yikes, that was a lot of money back then for a wickedly fast Porsche 911 turbo, but today their worth well over a quarter million. The final addition to the show was a tribute to Dean Jefferies, the Original “Outlaw”. Jefferies was a noted painter and pin stripper of the day and friend of James Dean, screen actor who had him paint “Little Bastard” and 130 on Dean’s infamous 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder which he later crashed and died in while driving to a sports car race in Salinas, CA. Jefferies love of Porsche started in 1957 when he traded a hot rod for a Porsche 356A Carrera GS coupe (VIN #56083). Jefferies removed the bumpers front and rear, Frenched the headlights, created a small scoop on the rear engine compartment lid and reworked the rear lighting. The car in its completed state and known as “Outlaw”, won a number of cars shows in the 60’s and was featured on the cover of Rod and Custom Magazine in October 1959. Luftgekuhlt are Righteous Porsche car shows that come to SoCal in April or May at a different location each year, and you don’t even have to own a Porsche to attend. The 37th Annual Classic Chevy Show was an event not to be missed! This show, which is open to all makes and models, was another huge success. If you are unfamiliar with the Classic Chevy Club of SoCal, there might not be a more energetic and passionate group of car owners out there. The Club has chosen Rancho San Antonio Boys Town not only as their location, but the beneficiary of the show. Proceeds from the show aredonated to Rancho, which helps to provide underprivileged youth a safe home and learning environment to help secure their futures. Over the last dozen years, the Club has donated over $300,000.00 to Rancho. They have and will continue to help provide much needed funds to Rancho and to help secure the future of thousands of kids. The Ferrari SF90 The First Electric Hybrid From The Italian Powerhouse The first electric hybrid from the Italian powerhouse And Kim Kardashian thought she broke the Internet, well let me tell you, that award has been handed to Ferrari on painting the internet Rosso Corsa red with their latest creation from Maranello, the Ferrari SF90! It’s been a long time since I’ve been excited about a Ferrari, and the SF90 is just titillating. You are looking at the FIRST EVER mid-engine, all-wheel drive, and plug-in Ferrari…*in Jeremy Clarkson voice*…ever made. The 3.9L V8 from the F8 Tributo has been bored and stoked out to 4.0L with twin-turbochargers and provides a celestial 769hp and 590 lb-ft of tq. Now wait…hold on…

Ferrari wasn’t done there, because along with that infinity gauntlet of power they’ve accompanied it with three electric motors, two in the front and the third one between the engine, and the eight- speed dualclutch transaxle, coming to a pavement melting 986 horsepower. On its own and fully charged, the electric motors provide 16 miles of range. Granted this isn’t anything near the electric range of say a Tesla, but this is impressive over the Porsche 918’s 12 miles, or the McLaren P1’s 6 miles. The LaFerrari supposedly couldn’t run on electric power, however there are a handful of videos showing that it can do so, yet there

wasn’t a reported range. So where does this put Ferrari for the future? Right up there with everyone else. To offset the weight added from the hybrid drivetrain, Ferrari has gone to Jenny Craig like levels, of shaving every bit of weight that they could, which brings a final weight of 3,461. Throughout the body work, there are active and aero styling to make sure the SF90 is as much as ninja like blade of aerodynamics, and as drag efficient as possible. One of the most impressive notes is the “shut-off Gurney”, which is a vertical lip on the edge of the spoiler designed to increase the downforce. This generates a titan like 860 lbs of

downforce at 155 miles per hour. I’m sure there are more hidden surprises with this car, and also for the future of coming Ferrari’s as the technology will surely trickle down throughout the brand over the years, and models to come.

Most people consider the materials used in window framing aluminum, vinyl, etc. However, shape and type of glass is every bit as important as placement. It is imperative to also think about the purpose of the room and the statement you are trying to make. Windows can be grand or artistic, or they can be whimsical and dramatic in design. Muntins, the vertical and cross pieces used to separate a window into sections, may help create a work of wall art. A semicircular window will add excitement, while a hatch sparks curiosity. Large scale window walls flood a room with light, but a small and well-placed clerestory window often opens a space while disguising an un-

desirable view. Etched glass can be an art statement of its own. Frosted or sand-blasted glass is ideal for privacy, allowing for natural light while eliminating the need for window covering.
