FROM THE EDITOR B Y D U S T I N T R OYA N

Boy, I sure can be verbose sometimes. I just deleted the last letter from the editor and good grief, who do I think I am to pontificate in such a way. You guys really read what I write? God help us all! As if I am some expert at life or something....I have no idea what I am or what I am doing. I have told you all that so many times and if you are still reading this, you must be as crazy as me! An expert or something.... comical. You know I have had grown men who are very accomplished tell me that what I have written has changed how they do things in their life. I am serious. I mean guys who I can't hold a candle to tell me that. In the day and age when you can have a Youtube account or an Instagram account and scream over and over that you are an expert at something and people believe you, without any real accreditation, I am here to tell you that I am an expert at nothing. Yup, there I said it. With the race to be the ultimate car guy, or ultimate guru, or the ultimate motivational speaker or whatever the trend du jour is... I am just me. I usually talk about what I know which may be a lot to some or very little to others. I was with my mom and some very close family friends and I was telling them some stories about car stuff and they were mesmerized. No really. They think that I have such an exciting life. Perhaps that is the Facebook reality. Me with exotic cars, none of which I own. Sure I get to drive them now and then, but...I am just me. I say that smiling as I do feel blessed. In fact I know that I am blessed. And contrary to everything I just wrote, I am an expert in a few things, including and apparently being a hypocrite. And yes, I just had a double shot of espresso if you couldn't tell. So what am I an expert at you may ask? I am an expert at being so damn grateful for my friends. Now more than ever. I am so lucky to have such wonderful friends and people that are not blood related, but that I consider family. To me, blood doesn't make family, how you treat each other makes you family. I have always tried to appreciate my friends. Some of us have a strange way of showing it. If we aren't calling each other names or making fun of each other...well then you know there is a problem. But, I am very lucky to have some good folks around me. Some are old and some are young. Friends from all over the world. Every color, every religion. Some are off the charts wealthy and others have very little. Needless to say, I appreciate them. I love them. The last six months or so, my Father has not been doing so well. There have been some health challenges. There have been some times where we have had to call 911 and the Fire Department has had to help my mom and myself get my dad up and or load him into the car to take him to the emergency room. The first time my mom called, it was five in the morning on Wednesday. Naturally, I panicked and rushed to my parents house. But, when my mom told me that my friend William, a fireman was at the house, I instantly relaxed. William is one of my best friends, just happens to be a fireman, just happens to be at the station near my mom’s house and he was there with his team. I knew we were in good hands and if William was there, it was like me being there. He would treat my father as his father and my mother as his mother. I felt so much better. Well, the very next day, we had to call those same firemen back to the house to help us again, get my dad to the car and off to the hospital. They showed up, William too, very early in the morning, smiling and with a tremendous sense of kindness and helped us. So my dad was in the hospital for a while and came home. This is hard for me to write as if you read this letter regularly. You know how much I admire and love my parents, my family. He came home and I got a call from my wife that my dad, again, needed to be rushed to the

hospital. My mom has a neighbor, he is a fireman. We have become friends and he told me if I ever needed any help, just call. Well, I got the call and I was at work and another friend was visiting me (at work.) I got the call and started to run to my car and I realized that it takes three people to get my dad to the car. So I asked my friend Pete, can you please help me, without hesitation, we were out the door. Driving to my mom’s, I called Andrew, my parent's neighbor and a friend, he said he would be over immediately. The three of us got my dad to the car and off to the hospital. Unfortunately, this has been a little bit of a cycle, dad coming home and then heading back. As I write this, he is currently in the hospital, but things are looking better. He is the strongest man I know. So, he had come home for a few days after having a procedure done and became very ill again. My wife called me and I rushed to my mom’s house. Unable to move him by myself, I needed two other guys. I called my friends Gabe and Manny and they rushed over. They also, like my other friends, treated my father with so much care and respect, as if he was their father. Without my friends, I would have not been able to get my dad to the hospital. One of the guys actually followed us, just to make sure we were able to get him out of the car. Thank God for friends. As word got out that my father was not doing well, my phone started to ring a little bit. Friends offering to babysit the kids, help out here and there. Offering to go and sit with my dad. Anything we needed, people offered. And some people that I am not really close with, they offered to help as well. From the conviction of their voices and the look in their eyes, I believed they would help. At the hospital, my parents very best friends have been there every single day. I mean every day. It is so incredible. It is mind blowing. Whether my father is asleep or awake, they sit with him and my mom. They bring them food. They play cards and help keep the mood light and hope and pray that my dad will get better soon. They are there everyday. I didn’t know they make people like this anymore. That a friendship could be so strong, that it could have so much love, so much history and so much kindness, they are an example for me, on what true friendship is, and they have influenced me positively since I was born. Thank you so much Pam and Gary. You are incredible. Needless to say, my dad is doing better. It has been a roller-coaster of epic proportions. My mom is so strong, my wife has picked up so much slack and handled so much at my house and taking care of the kids as I have been a little absent staying with my father. I would be remiss in not acknowledging my wife, my mom, my brother and my in-laws (who flew in from out of state). I’ll tell you folks, if you have good friends, you are blessed. If you have good friends who want nothing more than to be there when you need them without any expectation of anything in return, you are truly blessed. In this challenging time, without my family and friends, I don’t know what I would do… but, my friends and family, you all make me who I am and I am blessed. Thank you. Dustin

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

The first production mid-engine Corvette

The 2020 C8 Corvette has landed. The internet exploded as GM launched the first ever, mid-engine Corvette. What was once a dream is now a reality and with the new body styling and mid-engine, Chevrolet has rocked the sports car worked. Many have suggested that GM has taken styling and performance cues from the exotic/Italian car world, but as GM has suggested, they pushed the front-engine as far as it could go for a street car. The evolution is an entire new platform with the mid-ending design and all new styling. Chevrolet has consistently raised the bar with the flagship Corvette over the years, producing a world class sports car that the “average person” could afford. One of the best values on the planet, the Chevrolet Corvette has offered “Supercar” performance at a bargain of a price. Carrying on that tradition, the C8 is presumed to be sold out! As the new Corvette “broke the internet,” when the car was revealed, they hype and hysteria is something that I had never previously seen from any car manufacturer. The public

took guesses as how much the new Corvette was going to cost based off of appearance, redesign and the fact that it would be a sub 3 second zero-to-sixty car. Once again, when Gm announced that the “base model” Corvette would be starting at just under sixty thousand dollars, they once again

“broke the internet.” Obviously price goes up with options and models, but a car that looks the way the new C8 Corvette looks and performance like a supercar, all for under sixty grand... good grief ! General Motors just opened up a new era of performance, ownership base and car

enthusiasts! Well done GM! For More Info: dustin@connectedmediagroup.com

On August 17th and 18 of this year, the Camarillo Wings Association held it's 39th Annual Air and Car Show event. The Association has donated over $371,000 in the past 9 years to local nonprofits that promote youth in science and aviation. Here is a list of some of the aircraft participants for this year: B-25, P-38, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-63 King Cobra, P-51 Mustang Spitfire, Japanese Zero, Hellcat, Jason Somes' L-29 Jet, Sammy Mason Pitts 25, Velocity V Twin RV-6, Lancair 360, Wardog PT17 Stearman, PT-22s, BT-19. Classic cars were parked on display in a special car show section and selectively parked around aircraft to participate in the CLASSIC CAR PARADE. Some of the other highlights were the USAF Parachute Demonstration Team and the Pyrotechnics, with their famous “Wall Of Fire presentation with the Pacific Theater flying fighters. The weekend had eight hours, each day, of fun and entertainment on two beautiful days. Many thanks to the Camarillo Wings Association, pilots, car clubs, and to the many generous sponsors and volunteers for this Spectacular Event...............Great Show, well done!

The Porsche Taycan The Taycan which translated as “lively young horse will boast the drivability of a 911 Turbo. Similar to the Tesla, Porsche will offer different power levels for consumers to choose from. The top-of-the-line four-wheel-drive 450kW, is expected to better the 0-62mph of 3.5sec. This places the Taycan on par with the 911 Turbo for outright accelerative ability. Wow! The choice of going electric has been, to this point monopolized by Tesla. The challenge to many future Tesla owners who have been on a waiting list or are considering going Tesla is brand loyalty to Porsche. Porsche owners are tremendously loyal, and it is a brand that is defined by excellence and innovation. An incredible dealer network, supply chain, the quality of the fit and finish which is hard for any brand to compete with, Musk is going to have to turn on the afterburner for sure. There is no doubt that Tesla set the standard, but as we all know, Porsche is not a brand to sit idly by and take second place. It is going to be a race in the newest automotive space. The future of the automobile is electric and Porsche is all in. Speaking to Porsche enthusiasts who also tend to be brand purists, they have see that transition from hybrid to electric and it seems that they are welcoming this new era with open arms. Porsche is smart to balance the Taycan like the traditional 911 and to have the interior feel like a new and innovated cockpit while maintaining an ease of use for current Porsche owners. It drives and feels like a Porsche, the performance is all there, it just doesn’t have the tried and true flat four/six boxer engine singing loud as you press the gas pedal. Suffice to say, I am sure that every Porsche collector has their

name on the Taycan list, order put in and is simply waiting for the future to arrive. All others be warned, Porsche is electrified. From what I hear from local dealers, orders are being placed as fast as they can take them and there is huge excitement about the Taycan. It is a leap forward for Porsche and there is no doubt that they will be setting the bar very high. For More Info: dustin@connectedmediagroup.com

A Different Type of Carpentry Article by Steve Geldman | Photos by Steve Geldman | @ImagePhotoMotorsports

The Woodie Wagon. Many people associate this iconically designed vehicle with surfboards, sand and The Beach Boys. Well folks, they may have ended their era in that fashion but surely did not start out that way. Back to that shortly … On July 27th, the Santa Barbara Woodie Club, one of 18 Chapters within the National Woodie Club, hosted their 19th Annual ‘Woodies on the Beach’ on the West Campus’ grassy knolls of Santa Barbara City College. According to Rick White, SBWC President and who drove in with his 1950 Ford Custom, 87 Woodies arrived at this beautiful Southern California destination from throughout the country. The huge National Woodie Show was being held in Maine a couple weeks later causing many who normally would have brought their Woodie to Santa Barbara, were preparing their vehicles for shipment to the east coast show. Typically, 125

or so Woodies are on display. Nevertheless, Woodies on the Beach was once again a big success and well attended. No one left disappointed. Vendors, Food Trucks and live “surfing” musical entertainment was just a few of the activities that continued throughout the day in perfect 72-degree, light-breeze Santa Barbara sunny weather. The oldest vehicle on display was an amazing 1932 Shooting Brake Rolls Royce, owned by David Franklin from Los Angeles. Produced from 1929 to 1936, this Rolls was the most popular model offered by the esteemed British automaker prior to World War II. The shooting brake body style was designed to handle utilitarian chores of country living with Rolls Royce style and reliability. The interior top slats were bass wood. The structure was high quality maple and the panels were mahogany. During its 8-year run, only 3,837 were produced.

Back in the United States, Ford was the only auto manufacture having their own forest specifically to produce the wood for their cars. Their forest, called Iron Mountain, was in upstate Michigan and only a half-day drive to their main assembly plant in Detroit. Due to Ford having control of their own wood production, they built more woodies than any other U.S. car manufacturer. Their competition, such as Plymouth, Pontiac, Studebaker, Dodge, Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Packard, Willys, Mercury, Hudson

and Chrysler were all trying to catch up but due to having to outsource wood with little control over quality, delivery and other factors, never got close to Ford’s production numbers. The story of the Woodie is a fascinating one. Wagon Masters who were building horse-drawn wooden wagons had to reinvent themselves to avoid going out of business as combustible engines were coming onto the scene. To survive, they were now building a wooden body that was then placed onto a gas engine powered steel chassis. This ‘open air’

vehicle was called a Depot Hack. Depot Hack’s were often used to transport people to and from a Train Depot. However, the Depot Hack name was actually a nickname derived from the Hackney Carriage, what we may refer to today as a Taxi Cab. These early automotive bodies made entirely from wood slowly evolved by later using steel, having glass windows and being fully enclosed. The enclosed body wood paneled passenger cars continued to pick-up and deliver people to what was by now commonly referred as

a Train Station. This created a new term, naming this automotive body style as the Station Wagon. How many readers knew that association? DrivenWorld magazine is here to educate you! Don’t miss the 20th Anniversary of Woodies on the Beach targeted for July 25th, 2020. For more information, visit www.woodies.clubexpress.com and use the Chapters link to find Santa Barbara.

Celebrating 50 Years of the Triumph TR6 Article & Photos by Steve Geldman, Image Photo Motorsports @ImagePhotoMotorsports

On July 14th, the Central Coast British Car Club presented their 19th Annual British Car Show at the Channel Islands Harbor Park in Oxnard. This year’s event focused on the golden anniversary of the Triumph TR6 and many prime examples were exhibited to celebrate the occasion. A British invasion show record-breaker of 135 fine automobiles were placed on the grassy waterfront overlooking the yachts in the harbor. On display were a wide range of British motor works from a gorgeous 1947 Triumph 1800 owned by Gary Cooper from Ventura, which won in the ‘Rarities pre-1970’ Class, to present day Mini Coopers, such as an amazing 2013 Mini R56 owned by Ted Lighthizer from Simi Valley. In addition to this annual show having their raffle drawings and a handful of automotive awards, The Pacific Coast Highlanders Pipe Band marched around the area playing their bag pipes which gave some Great Britain coolness to the scene. Best of Show award was a stunning 1958 Jaguar XK150 owned by Dave Reid & Terry Schuller. Other award winners included a 1966 Lotus Elan owned by Don & Becky Thompson, 1960 Mini Traveller owned by Stephen Karolyi and a 1970 McLaren M6GT owned by Dave & Jane Wolin. According to CCBCC President, Michael Gustafson, the club currently has 130 members and was established 35 years ago. Those who own a British automobile are welcome to join the club and share their passion with others who may own a vehicle with the steering wheel peculiarly placed on the right-hand side. Don’t miss next year’s show celebrating its 20th anniversary! Mark your calendars for Sunday July 19th, 2020. The show will once again be located on the beautiful Channel Islands Harbor Park waterfront. For further club information, link onto www.centralcoastbritishcarclub.com

Motor4Toys

16 th Annual Charity Car Show & Toy Drive The 16th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive is around the corner! In December, the entire car community will come together with one purpose in mind, to help children during the holiday season. It is that simple and it is truly magical. Just about every type of car imaginable will be present and will be loaded with toys to donate to the Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive. The car show kicks off the toy drive season for the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation which over the last eleven years has collected over five million dollars of toys which have been distributed to needy children throughout the state of California. The Foundation revolves around the very kind motorsport community and over the last handful of years, has grown outside of the car world. Many schools, businesses, Chambers of Commerce and even city officials have gotten behind the toy drive and helped to collect toys during the holiday season. Every year, the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation continues to grow with the kindness and support from so many kind people. Over the past fifteen years, so many people have played such an important role in making the Foundation what it has become, that when you think of Motor4Toys, you think of the car community. Every single person that has ever given a toy is considered part of the Motor4Toys family. As the Foundation has grown, many people have asked how can they support the toy drive outside of the car realm? That is simple. First and foremost, we would love for you to do a toy drive at your school or business. Many people have actually done Motor4Toys holiday parties at their business or home and asked the guests to bring toys in lieu of wine or other gifts. It kind of changes the whole atmosphere of a holiday dinner. It has become a tradition for many. How long does Motor4Toys collect toys? All year round. We collect toys all the way through the month of December and have the ability to get the toys into the

hands of children very effectively. Last minute toy donations are always appreciated. We receive toy donations throughout the year and have the ability to distribute toys all year long. Children always need something to know that people they may not know care about them. For more information, please visit the Motor4Toys website: www.motor4Toys.com You may also donate online as well. www.motor4toys.com

The Lamborghini SVJ

The Fastest and most powerful Lamborghini ever produced, The Aventador SVJ.

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Lamborghini

The ‘J’ stands for “Jota,” the most extreme version of any Lamborghini model. Lamborhgini pushed the limits in every way taking the flagship Aventador to the highest level. With 770 horsepower, all wheel steering, the naturally aspirated V12 Hypercar has redefined Lamborghini once again as a leader in hypercar category. With boutique hypercar makers like Pagani and Koenigegg leading a charge to redefine what exotic, super exotic or hyper cars are, the ”big boys” in this segment (Ferrari, Lamborhgini, Porsche, McLaren) are pushing the envelope further and further to answer the demand of rare works of art that only the wealthy can own and drive. It has become an all out race to produce the fastest, rarest, most comfortable hypercar that you can actually drive daily if you wanted to. Crazy as it may seem, daily drivability of your hypercar has become a badge of honor. I have driven every variation of the Lamborghini Avantador with the exception of the SVJ. I remember the first time behind the wheel of the Avatandor, the Lamborghini representative warned me that the shifting was “violent” in Corsa mode. I shrugged it off, until we used the “Launch Control” setting and not only did I have whiplash, but I did see stars for a few seconds. And yes, every shift is violent. You can search back a few years and find the review, back then the car blew me away, and now after years of refinement, the Aventador has been perfected in the SVJ. Fully loaded the car is estimated to be in the $600,000.00 range, a drop in the bucket compared the contenders from the other Hypercar brands. With only 900 examples to be produced, it is an instant collector piece and is believed to be sold out. If you can get your hands on one, well, you have become part of a truly exclusive club. Concours d' Elegance

David's Pebble Beach Experience I have always been a car guy so it wasn’t like I just found about this event — not the case at all . I have been threatening to attend for many years and always found a way not to make it there. This year was different — everything was in alignment including the fact that my daughter was working all of the Car Week Events held on the Monterey Peninsula on behalf of her Media company [ including of course Pebble Beach Concours] . The decision and commitment to attend the “ Concourse “ was made this June about two and a half months prior to the event . Step # 1 — find a place to stay in the area . Not so fast — all hotels ,motels & lodges are all pretty much sold out within a 40 mile radius of Pebble Beach . After spending about one hour on the computer trying to find a room somewhere in the area - I was “lucky “ to find decent accommodations in Santa Cruz about an hour and a half drive further north of Pebble Beach . Four hundred bucks a night was a little more than I wanted to spend but when the Motel Clerk said it was his last room available — the choice was made for me. The place was clean & it included breakfast — so be it . Speaking of Santa Cruz , now I know where all of the 60s and 70s “ Valley “ hippies landed . Step #2 — Order the General Admission entry ticket — $350.00 . This had better be good — I can see a lot of interesting cars at SCS for notta . By the way , $425.00 at the door .

Now, my daughter asks me what are you planning to wear ? I tell her : “ jeans, long sleeve shirt & comfortable shoes. “ I got the shoes right — the rest will not fly there . I was informed that if you really want the “ Pebble Beach Experience “ — your attire will be sports jacket , slacks and comfortable but “nice “ walking shoes . I needed a new jacket and slacks and my birthday was coming up so I bit the bullet and stopped by Nordstroms . Those guys know how to charge and if I do say so myself — I looked damn snappy in my new duds - just saying . Step # 3 — Driving North . It would be the first road trip for my brand new Genesis 80 , 5 liter , 420 HP . Concours was held on Sunday August 18 so the plan was to drive to the Motel in Santa Cruz on Saturday — spend the night and leave early Sunday morning for the Event . Map Quest was all in order at 9 am Saturday — the car was topped off with fuel , bags were packed , selected Economy Mode on the Genesis — no turning back now. With one 15 minute rest stop about a 100 miles from Santa Cruz - I pulled in to the Motel about 2: 15 pm . There were no significant delays along the “101” and the car averaged 29 miles to the gallon — not bad . Oh yes - had dinner at a local Diner that was featured on Diners, Drive In’s & Dives — This place was the latter . Step #4 — Getting to the Concourse . I got up early Sunday am , nailed the free breakfast [ it was good ] — got

Article & Photos byDavid Buchanan

all cleaned up , dressed in the new duds and off I went . As I got close to Pebble Beach along Highway 1 there were plenty of signs directing the traffic to the Event . Along 17 Mile Drive about 3 miles from the event the traffic slowed down and cars were lining up along the road. I got a spot in section “B” . There were plenty of luxury tour buses taking everyone to the show and 15 minutes later we were dropped off about one third of a mile from the actual entrance. No problem — there was plenty to see and experience outside the gates . Luxury car makers had huge hospitality tents and exhibits for all to partake . Infiniti went all out — free gourmet pastry goods , coffees, water etc. all - Gratis very impressive — I was told that they are really working hard to establish The Brand . Final Step — The Concours d’Elegance . It is difficult to find the words that properly describe it . Let’s just say -The admission fee of $350.00 was money well spent . It is the Grand Daddy of all Car Shows — As our Rose Parade is to Parades — No other Car Event comes close — Numero Uno in The World — It is POSH . There were over 200 classic cars there from 17 different countries and 31 States all parked on the 18th Pebble Beach Golf Course Fairway . The setting along the Ocean is breathtaking— just a spectacular sight and perfect 70 degree weather with a cooling sea breeze . This year’s theme was the “ Centennial of Bentley “ . The Bentleys were

all unique in some way — some were one of a kind and most were extremely rare older models — all restored better than new. The Overall Show Winner fittingly was a 1931 Bentley 8 Litre Gurney Nutting Sports Tourer [ the name alone deserves a prize ] . I am a car guy and many of the classics exhibited — never heard of them . How about a 1937 Horch 853 Glasser Sport Cabriolet . The Horch automobile evolved into Audi . This particular car was restored right here in So.Cal . See the photo — one of my favorites . There were exotic sports cars , totally unrestored 80 year old automobiles , ancient race cars , classic high end American Luxury cars such as Duesenbergs , Packards , Marmon —- eye candy all the way around . Needless to say , most of the owners are very wealthy and all were quite gracious accepting compliments I might add. Despite the show of audacious wealth . It is very worthwhile to know that millions of dollars are donated to charities through this event . This is a fact . In summary —much more than a great experience . It was very unique , spectacular and lived up to it’s billing —To me , the cost and effort involved for any car enthusiast to attend the Concours at least once is well worth it . Eco Gardens That Gratify The most effective way to create an environmentally - friendly yard is to conserve the amount of water needed to maintain that yard. Here are some tips on how to create beautiful water-saving landscapes without compromising a vivid and lovely appearance. 1) Less Grass: A large lawn is expensive to maintain so consider building a patio and or a natural stone pathway through the lawn. Decorative stones can also be used to surround trees or flower beds. Substitute large flower beds for grass areas at the corners and edges of your lawn. Planting artificial turf can also save thousands of gallons of water a year.

2) Plant Shrewdly: Plant your flowers in the fall when the weather is cooler and there is more rainfall. Annuals require much more water to maintain than do perennials. Ground cover plants cover large areas, come in a variety of textures and colors, and help stabilize sloping areas. Keeping your soil healthy with essential nutrients such as organic fertilizers, compost, nitrogen and phosphorus is also key. A layer of mulch is a great addition to add in between the plants in your flower beds as it helps prevent weeds and reduces water loss. 3) Irrigate Wisely:

Avoid watering your garden during the heat of the day. Mornings and/or evenings waterings help to minimize evaporation. Installing drip-irrigation systems will deliver water straight to your plants. Check your current irrigation system to ensure you are leak free and not watering sidewalks, driveways or patios and turn your system off during times of precipitation. Designing a vibrant and effective water-saving, low-maintenance garden can be both gratifying and beautiful. Save water, save money, save the planet
