Welcome to the March 2016 edition of Driven magazine. By now I imagine you’re all aware of our latest venture into the world of motorcycles and, with the launch of Ducati Cambridge and the upcoming launch of Ducati Peterborough, we’ve all been busily preparing for something that little bit different. As a family company ourselves we pride ourselves on a personal approach, taking care not to lose the very essence of customer service that Frank Vindis built the business upon in 1960. With Ducati’s ideals very much in line with our own we’re naturally very excited to begin this partnership with you, our loyal customers. Moving from two wheels to four, we launched our new Bedford Audi centre on February 12th which, hot on the tail of Northampton Audi, saw its redesign, modernisation and expansion into a twelve car showroom and fourteen bay workshop, with an onsite MOT bay. You can read about our glamourous launch event, with special guest Louis Smith, on pages 24-25. We also delve into our next restaurant review at The Mermaid, a beautifully restored 14th century pub in Ellington and of course introduce you properly to one of our most coveted cars, the exquisite new Audi R8. For the sports fans amongst you, make sure you catch our interview with the talented Geoff Swain, World Golf Trick Shot Champion, on pages 6-9 and don’t miss out on your chance to win a signed Northampton Saints shirt. I’ll let you now continue into the pages of Driven and hope it makes for an enjoyable read, whether you’re enjoying a coffee in one of our showrooms, or are reading online at home. As always, any feedback can be sent to driven@vindisgroup.com, or alternatively pass your comments on to the team next time you pop into your local dealership. Until next time, have a very happy Spring and we’ll see you again in the Summer.

Jamie Vindis, Managing Director Vindis Group

ŠKODA Octavia vRS 230. The vRS range just got hotter.

I

f you’re looking to test out the ŠKODA range but find yourself wanting that little bit more then make sure you check out their aggressive looking Octavia vRS range, available in both hatch and estate versions. ŠKODA’s latest offering comes in the form of the Octavia vRS 230; it’s fiercer, faster and a touch more sporty than the standard vRS model, with an enhanced, turbocharged 2.0 litre petrol engine offering 230PS. This means you can go from 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds if you opt for the manual hatchback. Should you prefer to choose the DSG estate version, that figure only drops to 7.0 seconds, and that’s in a vehicle that can comfortably carry five adults with an incredible 610 litres of boot space. Intrigued? We thought so.

So what does owning the fastest ever vRS get you? The clue is in the name for the 230PS engine, and the vehicle’s Electronic Differential Lock offers increased traction and handling, ensuring you are in complete control at all times. Not short of standard features, you can explore somewhere new via the touchscreen satellite navigation system, take advantage of a number of vehicle performance modes to ensure maximum fun, and still sit back with the cruise control set, enjoying the comfortable heated front sports seats. Compromise is a word that clearly doesn’t feature in ŠKODA’s vocabulary. To make your journey even easier, front and rear parking sensors, rain sensors, lane assist and light assist all come as standard. (Phew, we think we’ve covered most of it!). We know our ŠKODA customers love the quality of their vehicles, combined with brilliant specification and build quality and this powerful new addition is no different. Despite the power and technologies crafted into this car, it’s still a vehicle to be enjoyed wherever you are, and whoever you‘re with.

front grille and roof rails on the estate. Exclusive to the vRS 230, the 19” Xtreme alloy wheels give a menacing look to the already sporty vehicle. Inside the vehicle red accents and the vRS logo are striking additions to the black leather sports seats. With the final touches of vRS badging to the front and rear door sills, you certainly won’t be short on road presence. Of course, the vRS 230 is first and foremost a car to be driven, not just admired from afar. Seven airbags will keep your passengers safe, and the automatic Post Collision Braking System and Driver Fatigue Sensors help to increase safety to ensure you can keep driving your vRS 230 for many years to come.

The ŠKODA Octavia vRS 230 really is something very special, and we’re sure that owners love the vehicle just as much as we do. If you would like any more information about this vehicle, or on any others in the range, please contact the teams at ŠKODA Cambridge or ŠKODA Bury St. Edmunds, who can help with any queries you may On the exterior, the vRS 230 stands out have. Alternatively, maybe you are lucky from the standard vRS with more aggressive enough to already own one of ŠKODA’s styling features, including stylish black filled vRS models, and we’d love to hear your bi-xenon headlights, which complement thoughts on our Facebook or Twitter pages! the beautifully dark mirrors, exhaust pipes,

Golf, as you’ve never seen it before. A

s a group spanning five counties we’re incredibly lucky to be involved with a number of talented sporting clubs and individuals but of those we partner with, none can boast that they hold a world champion title. None, that is, other than local sportsman, and friend of the Vindis Group, Geoff Swain. A partner of the Bedford Golf club, and one of our own sponsorship partners, we’re incredibly lucky to see Geoff in the dealership and at our events from time to time, despite his incredibly busy, world touring schedule!

6

Geoff is the current World Golf Trick Shot Champion, a title he has held since 2006 when he battled tough opposition to reach the top, revealing to the crowds what golf trick shots are all about; creativity, ingenuity, showmanship and a good sense of humour. As the still reigning champion, (an impressive achievement we’re sure you’ll agree), we spoke to Geoff about his family, his career, his brand new TV show and what he thinks about the current Audi range. So how does a current world champion become just that? Geoff tells us that his love of golf came from his Dad and the many years he spent as a youngster caddying for him at the local golf course. With his passion for the sport growing he picked up the clubs himself at the age of 12 and got hooked very quickly. Geoff tells us: “My Dad used to drop me off in the mornings on the way to work, and then pick me up on the way home. You couldn’t get me off the golf course.” Despite wanting to play professionally, life soon took over and with less time to practice than he would have liked, Geoff put that dream to the side and took a career with the Bedfordshire Police Force instead. With an illness unfortunately forcing him out of this career after ten dedicated years, Geoff turned back to his first love, picked up the golf clubs again and began teaching others, spending his spare time practicing a few trick shots. The rest, as they say, is history.

tricks are those where he can really get the crowd involved. Back in 2006 at the Championship, when everything was at stake, Geoff had a moment of genius just 30 minutes before he took to the stage. The Chip and Drive was born, and it was an instant winner. Geoff recalls, “I got a spectator to chip the ball to me, and as it flew towards me I hit it mid-air with a driver. I repeated this shot with Ian Poulter and now there are millions of YouTube clips with the same shot. It’s amazing really.” It was this very moment of genius that has seen Geoff travel the world, performing to audiences of all sizes and proving that golf is not always what you expect! Geoff is keen to emphasise just how thankful he is for where his career has taken him; “I’m lucky to have travelled to so many locations, and met so many lovely people, just for mucking about with a golf club and ball.” (Though having seen some of his tricks, we can confirm that there is far more to it than luck!). Geoff reminisces about his time spent at the HSBC World Championships at Mission Hills in China where his experience was unforgettable for more than one reason. “I was in front of 7,000 people hitting golf balls into a lake overlooking the 18th green. What a buzz! I guess it was also memorable for another reason. Driving down the street you could see affluence, with extreme poverty right next door. That was really eye-opening, and something that has stayed with me to this day.”

With an entire repertoire of entertaining shots under his belt, Geoff is still adamant that his favourite

7

Geoff is particularly proud to be involved with the Audi quattro cup, which is a much anticipated event in the Vindis calendar too. In 2006, Geoff was initially invited to the cup finals at The Grove in Watford to perform his trick shots and was asked again in 2007 to attend the finals in Tenerife. “I was asked to host a Q&A session with Tour Pro, Nick Dougherty, at the Gala Dinner, which thankfully went down really well. I’ve been lucky enough to be invited back every year to perform and now MC the whole event. The Audi quattro cup World Finals have been a great opportunity for me to speak on stage, allowing me a whole new career path. I’m not just saying this, but there is no better amateur event in golf than the Audi quattro cup, it really is a treat to be a part of.” Geoff’s speaking events are now just as in-demand as his golf shows and it’s clear that he is a man of many talents. It’s a side of his job that he loves just as much as the golf and his mix of wit and humour make him the popular choice for glamorous events and competitive golf competitions, and he has had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Ballack and Hasan Salihamidzic, Hank Haney, Gary Player and Ian Poulter to name a few! With his trick shot career still going from strength to strength, we were excited to hear of his upcoming

8

TV show, scheduled to air weekly from April this year. Golf Juice, which will be available on Sky Sports, is an exciting new concept for a golf show, and will be hosted by Jimmy Bullard, Dj Spoony and Zoe Hardman. The show will run alongside the Masters giving the team the opportunity to look back at the previous and forthcoming tournaments, and Geoff and golf guru Mark Crossfield will be offering tips and tricks to those tuning in. “It’s a belter of a format that we know will work really well”, muses Geoff. When he’s not on the golf course Geoff can be found at home with his wife and two sons, aged 18 and 21. “For downtime outside of work we enjoy heading down to Cornwall when the boys and I do a bit of surfing. Well, if we’re being honest, they do the surfing and I belly board!” We’re sure you’ll agree that for lovers of the beach and surfing there is no more iconic vehicle than the Volkswagen Campervan, reincarnated as the modern day Volkswagen California, which Geoff tells us he can’t wait to get his hands on, after having so much fun in the previous model he rented from Northampton Van Centre, “Ok, it’s not camping, but definitely glamping, and it’s absolutely brilliant fun and gives a great sense of freedom. I used to own an old campervan myself, so it’s fair to say I have a soft spot for them.”

We’re lucky enough in 2016 to embark upon our sixth year of sponsorship with Geoff, and we were recently lucky enough to have Geoff join us as a special guest at our Bedford Audi launch event. Geoff’s talent and experience at speaking events meant we knew that he was the perfect person to interview Louis Smith MBE, who also joined us on the night. Geoff took to the stage and captivated the crowd with his interviewing style, even trying his best to tease some Strictly Come Dancing gossip from Louis, (unfortunately he wasn’t giving anything away but we applaud you for trying Geoff!). Being such a big part of the community, we hope to continue our relationship with Geoff for many years to come, and there’s no doubt he’s a real asset to the local community. “I have a great relationship with the Vindis Group. Vindis is involved with quality brands and is involved in the community I grew up in. I met with Mark Morris who was at the time Head of Business at Bedford Audi, and had to convince him I was an ideal ambassador for the brand. I think I got lucky as he wanted to start playing golf! I have an involvement with the Bedford Golf Club too so it works really well as the customer demographic is very similar and we can offer them the Vindis Golf Experience!” Of course, we couldn’t let Geoff go without asking his thoughts on the current Audi range. A regular

to Bedford Audi he currently has an A6 Allroad quattro, perfect for those long road trips and with enough space to carry even the most creative of trick shot props! “I’ve had a few Audis now. I had an A3 Convertible (in Winter might I add!), which was a particularly fun little car; remarkably comfortable and very economic. I never did get the roof down though as it was a little bit cold! I loved the Q5 as well, and felt very much like an executive in the A6 Saloon but in the end it was the A6 Allroad quattro that did it for me. It was magnificent and just like sitting in a big comfy chair and being taken for a ride. I’m always amazed at how fresh I feel after a long journey, which is really important to me… and I do have a little Audi fetish of shutting a door, have you heard how soft and perfect that noise is!” With a number of budding golfers in the community we asked Geoff what his advice would be to anyone wishing to follow his footsteps. His answer? “For me, enjoyment equals fulfilment. I love doing what I do, and if I didn’t I think I’d have to stop and move on to something else. With any career path you take, it’s all about enjoying what you do. If you can enjoy your job then it’s not really work. We don’t have to become super wealthy, if you can make ends meet and enjoy what you do, then that’s wealth enough.” Wise words, Geoff, wise words.

Investing in people.

W

hen you start your career with the Vindis Group, whether you’re new to the industry or simply looking for new experiences, you can be sure that you will be looked after from the day you start until the day we have to say goodbye. In order to realise our Vindis Vision at all times our Head Office team has introduced three new training programmes; spark, aimed at the future Vindis management, flare, for current management to hone their leadership skills, and ignite, for current Heads of Businesses, all aimed at ensuring personal development for employees at all levels of the business. We started 2016 with the fantastic news that the Vindis Group has been appointed as an Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) approved centre, meaning that our training courses meet the required industry standards and we can ultimately offer IMI accreditation to our employees.

“My site is performing better as a result of the sessions I’ve attended so far” James Bealey, Cookes of Fakenham Having already received great feedback for ignite, the Senior Leadership Programme and the first to be offered, we are excited to welcome more individuals onto our range of programmes. With ignite set as a 17 month programme, and just one of the courses we offer with IMI ‘Quality Assured Programme’ status we are extremely excited about the range of further opportunities we can now offer our employees as we head into 2016. Our Head of Business at Cookes of Fakenham, James Bealey, has been attending the ignite programme and offered his thoughts on just how valuable this training is; “Having just joined the Vindis Group I was delighted to be included in ignite so early in my new role. Whilst I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect I entered

the programme hoping it would enhance my leadership skills. I genuinely believe that this has been the case so far. I’m proud to be an early participant in ignite and honestly believe my own individual site is performing better as a result of the sessions I’ve attended so far.” Dan Ellis, Head of Business at Peterborough Audi, is another of our senior management team enrolled on the ignite programme, and is appreciating the wider learning opportunities available to both himself and his team; “It is a certainty my wider management team have benefited from my participation in ignite, you only have to review the vast topics and new skills I have taken on-board. I share a lot with my team; we are a tight unit and I normally distribute the topics with excitement as I know they will soak up the very welcomed new information.” As you can see, it’s clear that the Vindis Group are big on development, not just individually but for the business as a whole. By offering a range of approved programmes, set to industry standards and avoiding your usual ‘tick-box training’ we can ensure that our employees are reaching their full potentials. We’re keen to give our managers the tools to motivate their teams, and their teams the support to reach the top. By doing this we can fulfil our vision of providing the most knowledgeable, helpful and easy sales/service experience for you, our cherished customers. Make sure you keep an eye on the careers section of our website, where we will update any opportunities as they become available. Grab life by the handlebars. Ducati Cambridge and Ducati Peterborough

N

ow that the secret is well and truly out you’ll forgive us for getting excited about the addition of our brand new dealerships! For those of you who haven’t heard, the Vindis Group is proud to announce the addition of two Ducati motorcycle dealerships, in Cambridge, which opened this month and Peterborough, which is set for a June launch. Both dealerships will offer modern showrooms to Ducati’s highest standards, cutting edge aftersales and service facilities and passionate and knowledgeable staff. Building works are in progress to make sure that we’re offering you the most spacious, advanced dealerships possible and having heard some of the excitement regarding this news on our Twitter and Facebook pages, it’s clear that their arrival is as anticipated by you as it is us! Of course, it’s always great to hear such enthusiasm about a brand and we understand that Ducati holds a special place in the hearts of a lot of you.

Vindis values meet Italian Passion Started by one man and his three sons, Ducati grew carefully from their roots in Bologna, Italy, to the international brand it is today, and it was acquired by Audi in 2012, bringing it into the wider Volkswagen Group. Despite this, Ducati still held on to their core values, and their commitment to putting their years of innovation and passion into every bike. Therefore, it seemed the natural step for the Vindis Group to partner with Ducati UK, to

progress these values together. With the first Vindis dealership opening back in 1960, we too have put customers at the forefront of every decision. As a family business ourselves, it is imperative we too do not lose touch with those humble beginnings. Jamie Vindis, Managing Director of Vindis Group, stated: “I am extremely excited to have been awarded the Cambridgeshire Market Area by Ducati UK. “Audi’s ownership of Ducati makes this a very natural move for us, but much more fundamental than this, Ducati holds the same core values of our other brands and of our wider organisation; strong brand identity, heritage and customer loyalty, allied with creative modern delivery and a focus on customer experience. “The team and I are very much looking forward to adding Ducati to our customer offering and being able to meet the mobility needs of both new and existing customers with something this exciting. We are proud to be a part of this incredible journey, and we can’t wait for you to join us.” Make sure you keep up to date on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages, where we will be updating you with the latest news on the new dealerships. Of course, should you wish to speak to a member of the Vindis team about any of our current vehicles or dealerships, please visit vindisducati.com for contact details and opening times of your nearest showroom. We can’t wait to welcome you in!

A day in the life...

Meet James Hay, one of our Sales Executives at Cambridge Audi

Firstly, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Hello, I’m James! I’ve always loved cars, therefore, after studying engineering at college I had to apply for a job at Vindis! I’ve been working for the company for four years now in different positions on both the sales and aftersales side of the business.

What did you do prior to your role as a Sales Executive? Prior to working at Cambridge Audi as a Sales Executive I spent three years at Vindis Group Head Office, starting off as a Prospecting Executive arranging bookings for the service departments and then moving across to supporting our sales departments as a Group Stock Controller.

What do you enjoy the most about being a Sales Executive? From the customer service side of my role I enjoy meeting different people, introducing them to our products and matching their wants and needs to the ideal car. After what can sometimes be weeks of building a strong and trusting relationship with a customer it’s very rewarding to see them drive off our forecourt looking so happy with their new purchase. It’s even more rewarding to know that their vehicle will look after them for many more years to come… until we can help them again for another fantastic upgrade should they choose! Ultimately, the part I enjoy most is driving into our dealership every day and being surrounded by some of Germany’s finest engineering. Being in such a busy environment we can sometimes forget how amazing our cars are, until you show a customer features they have never experienced before such as a reversing camera, a power operated tailgate, or even the Foo Fighters playing through a Bang & Olufsen 755 Watt 16 channel 19 speaker 3D Advanced Surround Sound System! (“That’s easy for you to say, James!”)

What do you think makesVindis different to its competitors? At Cambridge Audi we strive to instil the core family values that Frank Vindis built our business upon. Rather than customers being pulled through a sales process we like to make it feel like they are being carried through a purchasing experience. We try to provide a more consultative service with an aim to simply listen to a customer’s requirements and guide them to the best solution by providing them with all the information they require in order for them to come to an informed decision with their purchase.

14

Can you give us a brief ‘day in the life’ of a Sales Executive? Every morning I walk into an office full of energetic colleagues. We all sit down for our morning meeting (fuelled mostly by biscuits and banter) to discuss the day’s topic in detail and share best practice. After the meeting we then head outside to the forecourt where we ensure the displays are neat, and this also allows us to inspect new stock. I’m a kinaesthetic, visual learner, therefore this activity really helps me to remember everything we have here. Once we are happy with the forecourt we then begin our main duties as sales executives. Every day is different, but a usual day can involve taking customer enquiries, arranging appointments, qualifying customer needs and matching them with the correct vehicle, appraising part exchanges, going on test drives, negotiating deals, following up previous appointments, organising preparation, and handing over sold vehicles. It sounds much simpler in a list like that, however, the role can also be extremely challenging at times, which is where our team mentality proves strong. Everything we do is in order to learn, improve and ultimately drive our business forward.

Where do you see your career progressing at the Vindis Group? Well I haven’t been in my current position very long, therefore, I want to dedicate the next couple of years to improving my skills and building a reputation within the group as a respected Sales Executive. The great thing about Vindis, and also Audi, is the support that we are given as staff, and we are regularly given training in order to help ourselves improve. I am actually writing this now on my iPad from a hotel room just outside of Milton Keynes as I am currently on a three day course learning about the Audi Product Principles. I have a few courses booked in over the next few months, all in order to help better myself and work towards my Sales Executive Accreditation. I’ve always wanted to work with a prestige marque or with classic cars, so I’m over the moon with my career at Vindis so far.

If you could sum up your day in one word, what would it be, and why? Unpredictable, the reason being that every day brings a new challenge. When I first started at Cambridge Audi I had never worked in sales before. I asked one of my colleagues (who had already been doing the job for a couple of years) how long it took him to get fully up to speed as a Sales Executive, and he said it is impossible to teach every situation and that he is still learning on the job every single day. That’s what keeps us on our toes.

If you could drive away in any car in the showroom, what would it be and why? My favourite car that we have is the A7 Sportback Bi-TDI. The A7 is a stunning looking car, a luxurious four door executive car with sleek coupe styling. Handsome yet subtle. Then there is the engine, 320PS from a 3.0 litre diesel is an incredible achievement from Audi. Just a few years ago 100PS per litre from a petrol engine would have been considered very impressive, let alone a diesel. It also produces a massive 650NM of torque, which makes covering any distance effortless. In my opinion that car represents what Audi is all about; high quality, advanced technology, impressive performance and understatement.

If you would like to get in touch with James and the team at Cambridge Audi please call 01223 414181 or email cambridgeaudienquiries@vindis.com

The Mermaid Inn, Ellington A very special place to spend your time.

U

nassumingly nestled on the High Street in the quaint little village of Ellington there sits one of the most delicious, and enjoyable dining experiences for miles around. The Mermaid Inn is a carefully restored pub dating back to the 14th Century, steeped in history and very much the heart of the local village. Driving out of Huntingdon we took the turning into Ellington, drove down a curvy road and passed a beautiful church before parking up outside The Mermaid Inn. Though we were just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the A14 the small village was quiet and a lovely surprise, as if we’d stepped back in time. Entering the pub we were greeted at the bar by the friendly staff and taken to our table at the back of the pub, in one of three rooms used for dining. A large fireplace kept us warm during our visit and we both agreed it was one of the most homely pubs we’d ever visited. We were handed both the bar and restaurant menu and were immediately taken aback by the choice on offer, from Lebanese and Caribbean cuisine to the locally sourced seafood that you would expect from the nautically named pub. From starters to desserts and even a ‘transition’ course, it might be worldwide, the menu is a vibrant offering of classic, worth asking some of the knowledgeable staff for modern and flavours you might not necessarily expect. their recommendation if you’re prone to changing Purchasing The Mermaid Inn in November 2014, Nick’s your mind! dedicated team set about tastefully restoring the dilapidated building to the warm, welcoming pub it is This was the choice that we opted for, and we sat today, and happily he had the full support of the locals, down with Nick Marriott, the incredibly talented head who had recognized the pub as the heart of the village chef and owner of The Mermaid Inn. Nick started out for many generations. The restaurant, which opened with a sports degree and a career as a professional in January 2015, receives daily, fresh deliveries, and it’s rugby player before an injury forced him out of the game. they had learnt from the building’s past. Starting life as a hovel, connected to the church next door, the building had spent most of its years as an inn for those who passed. We took note of the original beams throughout the building which had been taken from dismantled ships that were brought to the village, the main one being The Mermaid, hence the pub’s name. If you head into the bar make sure you take note of the main beam facing the fireplace where a number of American coins can be found hammered into the wood. With an American military base previously nearby the airmen would stop by and hammer a coin into the beam before heading out to fight in WW1, with the intention of collecting the money on return and buying a well-deserved pint from their local. The coins that remain are of those who tragically never returned and the preservation of this feature, and the story shows just how important this pub was to the village. Settling back down at our table, out came the chef’s next recommendations; one course of Roasted Duck Nick mentioned that the soft shell crab was one of Breast, and another of Venison with Orange and Juniper the pub’s bestsellers, and despite the ever changing Crumb. Both dishes were again presented beautifully menu, was one of the dishes that they couldn’t and cooked to perfection. The duck was delicious, and possibly remove. We had to try it and out came an was served with fois gras, vibrant green cavolo nero and exquisitely presented, battered whole crab, served a red cabbage jus. Meanwhile the venison was served with crispy chilli and spring onion and a delicious with an orange and juniper crumb, pommes soufflées, lemon and lime leaf puree. We give it a huge Vindis stamp of approval, and can’t recommend it enough.

Second generation excellence.

W

ith the success of the first generation Audi R8, when it was launched back in 2007, the car has continued to not only match but exceed any sales expectations Audi had. Fast forward seven years and in the true spirit of Audi’s slogan, Vorsprung durch Technik, we meet the second generation R8; it’s lighter, (thanks to Audi Space Frame technology), faster, holds a much more muscular stance on the road, and is very much ready to compete with its predecessor.

The petrolheads amongst you will no doubt be eager to visit their local Audi centre to marvel

18

at what is one of the latest additions to the showroom. Our Peterborough, Northampton and Bedford dealerships are currently displaying one of these incredible machines, and are waiting patiently for you to take a test drive and fall in love with the power, sound and luxury available to those behind the wheel. Audi’s racing heritage is no secret, and its success in the 24 Hours of Le Mans races put the brand in the perfect position to put what they had learnt on the tracks onto the road. As a result, the latest Audi R8 shares fifty percent of its parts with the Audi R8 LMS, which, built for racing, has taken on countless competitive races, winning no less than 26 titles worldwide.

This, then, should tell you a little bit about the R8 production car, which is available in two models. The R8 V10, which boasts 540PS and is capable of 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, and the R8 V10 Plus which takes the titles of not only Audi’s fastest production car, but also the first to reach a top speed of an incredible 205mph. The V10 Plus harnesses 610PS and sprints from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds. As with the previous model, the engine is still visible through the rear window and cylinder-on-demand technology and a dual injection system improves efficiency.

Of course, should you wish to make your own R8 that little bit more personal, the list of optional features ranges from 20” alloy wheels, Audi Laser Lights, Audi Magnetic Ride and a Bang and Olufsen sound system. Should you wish to stand out from the crowd, Audi’s paint range extends from standard colours, (we’re particularly fond of Vegas Yellow!) to their sought-after exclusive paints, and a range of interior leather options perfectly complement the overall appearance. In all, there is something exciting at every angle, and that’s before you’ve even started the engine.

The new model has dropped the option of a manual gearbox but offers Audi’s wellloved, highly-efficient S tronic transmission, with super-quick gear changes, so fast they are unnoticeable to the driver. The responsive quattro all-wheel-drive system distributes power to all wheels, providing improved grip and traction on a variety of road surfaces and Audi Drive Select puts further power in the driver’s hands to choose a pre-set setting, or one of your own creation.

Of course, you’d be forgiven for accusing us of being biased, so it’s only fair for us to share the opinions of some of the best motor journalists and publications. Car magazine awarded it a full five stars, writing that, “in the old ‘point-to-point on an unfamiliar country road’ stakes, we can think of few cars that offer such a deeply capable blend of reassurance and unhinged performance.” Autocar fell in love with the engine noise and were particularly impressed with the vehicles supercar prowess; “you must press the sports exhaust button if you want maximum aural pleasure. It opens up all four tailpipes and, with no synthesised accompaniment, lets out pure, honest, exhaust noise. It’s truly wonderful.”

Inside the vehicle you’ll be impressed by Audi’s brilliant Virtual Cockpit, a high-resolution screen which displays everything you need to know… digitally of course! Choosing from a number of viewing options – classic, infotainment and sport – changes the information displayed in front of you, and of course there is no better way to follow your sat nav than for the beautifully crisp screen to display the map right in front of your eyes.

It’s clear that loving the new R8 is a very easy thing to do.

An unforgettable experience. In September 2015 our Bentley Cambridge dealership was preparing to welcome some of our lovely customers onto a very special event, in partnership with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), meticulously planned and offered to those wishing to look forward to, and embark upon, something that little bit different. The event in question was an unforgettable trip on the Belmond Northern Belle, the sister train to the Venice Simplon Orient Express, whose carriages bring back memories of the golden age of steam and the Belle trains

of the 1930s. The seven carriages on the train allow for individual seating, placed around immaculately set tables. An icon across the world as a method of luxury travel, the trains take guests up and down the country on day trips and weekend breaks, though our tour for the day took on something very special indeed. Greeted by Belmond station staff our

20

guests embarked upon a journey back in time, through the stunning Cheshire countryside to CW1 House, Bentley’s magnificent flagship dealership and the factory and museum in Crewe, then on to the historic city of Chester. As our guests took in the incredibly beautiful scenery, (and the Sparkling Bellini and three-course brunch onboard!), we arrived at Crewe excited at the thought of being some of the first in the country to see Bentley’s brand new SUV, the Bentayga. With the most advanced 12-cylinder engine available, capable of 0-60 in just four seconds, the Bentayga comfortably carries all passengers in the lap of luxury at angles of up to 35° in any direction. The unreachable is now more reachable than ever before, and the Bentayga sits as comfortably in the shiny Crewe showroom as it does on the harshest of terrains. Before the big unveil our guests took a tour of CW1 house before heading into the workshop to marvel at the exquisite sports models on display. From here the tour took a turn into the unique heritage centre for another step back in time, to witness the vehicles that started Bentley on the journey to the highly respected brand it is today. Finally, it was time for the unveiling and we gathered in Bentley’s sparkling

showroom, surrounded by the Bentley range. As the cover was pulled it was clear to see that the Bentayga was an instant hit, with guests keen to look around, explore the cabin and really get to grips with the technology in this vehicle. Bentley had been teasing us with videos on the vehicle for months and it was incredible to finally see such an exquisite car in the flesh! With the excitement still high from this experience, we continued our journey by road to beautiful Chester where we settled into the Chester Grosvenor hotel for afternoon tea. Refuelled and ready to go the rest of the day was filled with exploring the city, visiting the Roman Amphitheatre, the fascinating cathedral and the highly decorated Eastgate & Eastgate clock. As the sun started to set our guests returned to the station and began their comfortable journey home with champagne and an indulgent four course Gala dinner. The miles of

countryside rolled past as they talked excitedly about their unforgettable day from the comfort of their chairs and cushions. We hope you’ll join us in thanking all those who joined us on the day, as this Bentley Cambridge and EACH partnership event helped to raise an

incredible sum for this most worthy of charities. With our current commitment to raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support we hope to be able to offer a number of future events. Keep your eyes peeled for our next exciting adventure!

A very special promise.

For those affected by cancer, be it personally or through a family member or close friend, it is understandably not only a very difficult time, but a lonely and scary one too. Thankfully, there is always somebody to turn to, ready to provide support in a number of different ways, to ensure that noone has to suffer alone. This support comes in the form of Macmillan, a brilliant charity working tirelessly across the country, armed with a network of highly trained nurses, a library of information and a friendly smile in the face of adversity. It is for this reason that the Vindis Group has pledged to raise a total of ÂŁ52,000 over two years, enough to support a brand new Macmillan nurse in the local area. This very worthy cause has been enthusiastically backed by both our customers and employees across our sites, who have generously offered their time and donations in order to help us reach our target! All the way back in March 2015 we held our first fundraising day, and we set up in a Cambridge shopping centre with a campervan photo booth, some members of the Cambridge United football team and a Macmillan representative. In just a few hours we had raised an incredible ÂŁ432 from passing shoppers and heard some heart breaking stories from those who came to share their Macmillan experiences with us. A short time later Vindis Group management decided that a challenge was needed, to really get everyone in the spirit of giving. With a unanimous decision that we had to help and get a new nurse trained in our area, our two year, ÂŁ52,000 target was officially set in August 2015.

22

Leading by example the senior management team set their own personal challenge, of taking on the mighty, 24 hour, Three Peaks Challenge on the 4th September 2015. Not a task to be taken lightly, the largest of the peaks, Scotland’s Ben Nevis, ascends steeply and sits above the clouds at 1,344 metres high. They trained hard and now, just Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon stood between them and victory but as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going! A tired and sore, but very relieved team made it to the bottom of Snowdon 24 hours later, having added an incredible £10,000 to the goal. I’m sure you’ll all join us in congratulating them for their achievement, something we’re sure will be a fantastic memory to treasure. Helping push up the total we were proud to hold another Macmillan Coffee Morning, and it was clear that our employees had been training for the Great British Bake Off, as we all went home full of delicious coffee, cookies and cake. Our customers certainly enjoyed the day and we raised a fantastic £2,228, (and that’s a lot of cake!). Topping the year off, our Christmas Jumper Day on December 18th added a further £524 to the pot, rounding off one of our most successful fundraising years to date! Our plans throughout 2016 are just as exciting, and there’s plenty more where these fundraising ideas came from! Our employees are keen to run, jump, cycle and challenge themselves to push this total even further, and who knows, we may even smash our original target! We’re so proud to be working with Macmillan and can’t wait to see the difference that the lovely new nurse will make to the families of so many in the area, so make sure you keep an eye on our progress on our website, social media and Vindis Group Just Giving page.

Falling in love is easy with Bedford Audi As the stars came out on a very cold but beautiful evening on Friday 12th February we welcomed our guests to our brand new showroom at Bedford Audi. A selection of vehicles in the carpark lit the way with LED headlights, directing our guests onto the red carpet. Walking the red carpet to the doors, two fire performers showed off their daring tricks, wowing adults and kids alike as the fire lit up the car park. Stepping inside the showroom our guests were served a selection of drinks and delicious canapes, and took a second to marvel at our incredible giant heart, lit-up in white and red, with a contortionist hanging from a hoop inside. Performing a fantastic routine she brought the excitement of the circus into our showroom on the night. For our younger guests, (and of course those who are young at heart!) our well-loved Audi gaming pods awaited the next leader board champion. The competition was fierce, but our guests battled it out to race around the track the fastest. As the night went on, we noticed that the laughs were up whilst the times were down, (which we can only put down to the slowly increasing number of empty wine bottles!). Stepping away from the games you were greeted by our lovely acoustic guitarist and singer for the night, George Simpson. George helped us launch our Northampton Audi centre

24

last year, and we had such great feedback that we just knew he was the man to help serenade our lovely Bedford customers too. One of our next surprises also came in musical form, disguised as waiters and ready to entertain the crowds. Handing out further canapes to our guests two of our catering staff suddenly stepped back and declared that they would much prefer to be singers! The shocked faces surrounding us had no need to worry, as our ‘Singing Waiters’ weren’t rebellious staff but incredibly talented entertainers! Starting off with a lively rendition of Uptown Funk, the pair soon got the crowds into the party spirit. Our shiny new handover bay also received the VIP treatment on the night, holding within its walls one of our brand new Audi R8s. Surrounded by rose petals it welcomed you to try out the luxurious seats, and imagine for a second that you had pulled into your own driveway in one of these incredible machines. At 8:30pm we gathered towards the rear of the building to invite on to the stage the Audi Brand Director, Mark Morris and Bedford Audi’s Head of Business, Richard Hillier. Welcoming our guests to the newly renovated centre the pair officially opened the showroom and told us about the

Bedford Audi journey and some of our wonderful customers’ stories. Having moved from Ampthill Road to its current location at Progress Park all the way back in 1997 the centre gained a much larger service and sales department and acquired the space for the large Approved Used selection that you see today. Mark and Richard then introduced our special guests for the night, World Trick Shot Champion Geoff Swain, (make sure you read our interview with him on pages 6-9!), and Olympic Medallist, Louis Smith MBE. On top of a glamourous and

and his thoughts on his medal winning Olympic routine and of course, how could we forget his Strictly Come Dancing stint, which he won back in 2012. Geoff got the crowd laughing with his cheeky interviewing technique and it was great to see two local sporting heroes joining us on the evening. As Geoff opened the interview up to the audience for some Q&As it was clear just how inspirational Louis was for our crowds, with one customer thanking Louis for inspiring her young son whilst he battled illness. We ended the evening on a high, and unfortunately the time had come to say goodbye.

Once again, we would like to thank all of our wonderful customers who ventured out that night to join us, and raise a glass to the brand new Bedford Audi. As always, it is down to your loyalty and support that this was possible and we can’t wait for you to join us again in the future! If you couldn’t make it on the night, please feel free to pop in and take a look around. We can incredibly fun golf career, Geoff also turns his hand help fight off the cold with a lovely cup of coffee and a biscuit! Cambridge United vs. The Vindis Challenge

W

e’re lucky enough at the Vindis Group to hold some incredible sponsorships with a range of local teams and individuals and we really enjoy getting together with them at events and activities that we run throughout the year. In the Autumn of 2015 we decided that it was time to really test the mettle of the Cambridge United Football Club, and the Vindis Challenge was born! On the very windy morning of September 16th we arrived at Alconbury Airfield, and prepared the runway for eight exciting challenges. With a selection of vehicles from the small and mighty Volkswagen up! and the spacious ŠKODA Octavia to the luxurious Bentley Flying Spur and exhilarating Audi RS7, we prepared for the two team’s arrival and waited for the games to begin!

28

Team One was captained by Goalkeeping Coach, Martin Davies, accompanied by Greg Taylor, Matt Lowe, Conor Newton and Will Norris. Their challengers, Team Two, were captained by Head of Player Development, Mark Bonner, with Liam Hughes, Josh Coulson, Mark Roberts and Gearoid Morrisey.

the footballs themselves, it was not only a test of speed but one of accuracy and skill too! With only two goals scored from Team One, Team Two took an early lead with four goals!

We headed straight into our next two challenges, which offered something a little different! The first, our Bonnet Dash challenge was a true test of Taking a short ride down the runway, we concentration with a giant egg and spoon race prepared both teams for the imminent Vindis constructed from a stunning Volkswagen Golf GTI, Challenge. On the pitch they may be one team, a shallow tyre and a large ball. Our teams had to but off the pitch the competition couldn’t have negotiate around the track as quickly as possible, been stronger, and there could only be one winner. being careful not to lose the ball from the tyre. Next was a game of Passat Tennis, which required two teammates from each side to go head to head. Still in celebration mode from the previous games, Team Two stepped up to the challenge confident and ready to win! It was clear that Team One weren’t about to make the same mistake twice. Our Passat Tennis challenge, based on a game of volleyball, required both teams to head the ball over to the other side without letting it fall on the ground. Team Two tried their hardest to keep the ball out of their court but with Team One’s newfound confidence, they won two of the three rounds adding some much needed points to their scoreboard.

would be blindfolded, and the co-driver had to give instructions to get them around the track. Five second penalties would be given each time the car hit a cone. The co-driver’s tried their hardest to keep their teammates on the track but unfortunately some cones fell casualty to the Golf. Team One showed us how it was done taking one penalty, and finishing with a time of 2m 28s. Team Two took three penalties, finishing their challenge after 2m 56s.

Another time challenge race we grabbed two of our incredibly fun TTs and began our Vindis relay race, with the full length of the runway at our disposal and two refuelled teams raring to go. The rules were simple; each player must jump in the car and drive the It was now time to bring the track, stopping at each of the fantastic Volkswagen Golf GTI four markers to complete the back for a timed race with a task (be it star jumps or kickdifference. The winners would be the to the challenge and it was a team who navigated around close call, but Team One took the course the quickest… the lead once again, beating except things weren’t as simple Team Two by just two seconds! as they first seemed. The driver

The most fun of the day came from the small but mighty Volkswagen up! where we sought to prove just how spacious these little cars are. This challenge was slightly tougher; a selection of luggage waited at the starting line, including a polystyrene board, inflatable snakes, cones and plastic chairs and our teams had to pack the up!, get each player in their seats, drive around our track and cross the finish line. There were no rules about how you fit each item in (or on!) the car, as long everyone was inside and the doors were shut! We had so much fun watching the teams participate in this one and we can’t wait to show you the pictures, so you too can enjoy Team Two’s four second lead and see their happy, if not a little squished, return to the start line! After a quick stop for some lunch we decided that it was time to test our team’s creative skills and we let them loose on the side of our Transporter for the ‘It’s a draw’ challenge. As each team took to opposite sides of the van, each teammate chose an opposing teammate to draw. Though we were glad they chose football over art, we found it difficult to judge a worthy winner, so decided to open it out to the fans. The winner would be decided with a Twitter retweet competition, with the players themselves getting behind the voting. The fans had spoken,

and again Team Two scooped the point with 12 retweets compared to Team One’s 10. Finally, we ended the day with the most luxurious vehicle of all, our incredible Bentley Flying Spur and our Chauffeur Challenge! With one chauffeur and three VIPs from each team, each chauffeur had to jump out at each stop to open the door for the waiting VIP. With all luggage collected and put in the boot they sped off to the next stop. It was hard work, (well, for one of the team anyway!), but both teams raced back to the finish line. Again, only one second stood between the teams but Team One scooped gold in this final challenge. At the end of the day, there can only be one winner and the team taking home the glory of being the first Vindis Challenge Champions were… (drum roll please!)… Team One! A huge congratulations to the team, and commiserations to Team Two. They fought hard but were no match for the speed, competitiveness, and overall talent of their rivals! If you’d like to see more on what we get up to with our lovely sponsors then make sure you join us on Twitter and Facebook where we will be keeping you up to date with all the latest news.
