FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

2

Dear Drew Community, There are specific elements that form the core of any Drew education: a rich and challenging academic program, many avenues and opportunities for student service and leadership, and incredible support from gifted, dynamic teachers, with whom many students form bonds for life. With these pieces solidly in place, our students are liberated to figure out “what high school should be” over their four-year journeys on our campus. Whether they gravitate toward academics, the arts, or any of a myriad of opportunities at Drew, our most basic values as a community ensure that the growth of our students is characterized by determination, intellectual curiosity, and empathy. In an exceedingly complicated world, maybe we’re not just “what high school should be,” maybe we are creating what thoughtful, attentive, and caring adults should be. None of this is possible without the incredible support of the Drew community. Many thanks to Parent/Guardian Association Co-Presidents Judy Daniel and Jennifer Posner for an incredible year. Whether your support is through volunteer efforts, financial contributions, or by being a guiding presence in the lives of our students, you all have a hand in making Drew the second home it is for our students. We are incredibly grateful for all of your support. I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to Dan Henkle, who is stepping down as Chair of Drew’s Board of Trustees after four incredible years of service. Needless to say, the world has changed significantly since 2019. Dan’s thoughtful guidance, patience, and wisdom helped guide our community through some incredibly challenging times and left Drew in an even better place than he found it. We’ve learned much from Dan and hope he fills his newfound free time pursuing his many passions. Finally, a special note of gratitude to our incredible faculty and staff. They have, once again, been a shining example of perseverance, ingenuity, and care. When our graduates recall their time at Drew, they will likely remember first the inspiring relationships with the people who believed in and challenged them most. I feel grateful to share my days with them on our campus. In this Annual Giving Report, I hope you are reminded of all the reasons you find Drew to be an exceptional place. With immense gratitude,

David Frankenberg 3

Dear Drew Community, Every school year is marked by transitions, shaped by the ebb and flow of an annual calendar that lays out our well-marked road map while also allowing for change. At a school like Drew, where academics are balanced by authentic social and emotional learning, we are wellpositioned to be nimble and to know how to manage change. Our community stepped up in myriad ways in 2022-2023 as we navigated many expected and some unexpected changes. We came together at moments big and small, to support and celebrate each other. One notable event was the Spring Fundraiser held on April 28 at The Pearl. Tina Cheng and other staff put in countless hours to create an incredible evening along with parent volunteers Susan DaSilva, Sarah Emberly Fishman, Ann Ledo-Lane, Jennie McClelland, Rachael Mundon, Jane Verma, Wendi Stern and Sebastian Lane. The evening raised nearly $300,000 in support of faculty salaries, with 200 guests who partied in their 80s attire. As I step down from my tenure as Board Chair, I am reflecting on my four years in the role. I have been fortunate to partner with David Frankenberg through many transitions at Drew, with the Board doing its best to make good programmatic and financial decisions for our community. Being on the Board has allowed me to get to know Drew with a depth of understanding that has given me an even greater appreciation for our mission and vision. Drew truly provides a unique opportunity for students to chart their own paths under the careful guidance of an excellent faculty. As for next year, the Board works diligently at succession planning, and we are incredibly fortunate to be welcoming Maija Muncy (John ’24) as the incoming Chair. Maija has been a trustee for two years, chairing the Finance Committee and sitting on the Endowment Campaign Planning, Committee on Trustees, and Advancement Committees. The Drew community is in excellent hands with Maija, and while I will miss working so closely with such a dedicated Board and hard-working staff, I look forward to staying in touch as an alumni parent. I expect great things in the years to come!

DREW ANNUAL FUND

ANNUAL FUND SUPPORTERS We are grateful to the many parents, trustees, faculty, staff, grandparents, friends, foundations and corporations that supported Drew’s Annual Fund in the 2022-2023 school year.

A Drew believes strongly in the power of young people and works continuously to create a positive and productive environment for our students as they develop their individual voice. The Annual Fund is the primary fundraising initiative at Drew and is vital to fulfilling Drew’s mission. As at most independent schools, tuition only covers part of the cost of our exceptional programming. We turn to our community to help bridge the difference between tuition and the true cost of educating each student. The Drew community generously gave nearly $800,000 to the Annual Fund in 2022-2023. Your contribution, no matter the size of the gift, has a direct impact on today’s students, faculty and staff. The annual fund ensures competitive salaries for our teachers, a robust tuition assistance program for four out of ten of our students, and the ability to provide innovative, experiential programming. Each year, we seek to reach 100% participation from current parents, faculty and staff, and our Board of Trustees.

We apologize if we omitted or had an error in anyone’s listing. Please contact the Advancement Office to correct any errors at advancement@drewschool.org.

We hope you’ll join us on campus this year! Many thanks to Drew alumni for their support during the 2022-2023 year and a special thank you to Eric Schulkin ’09 for leading the alumni efforts through his work on the Board of Trustees. In the coming year, alumni can look forward to a reunion for classes ending in 4 and 8, although all are welcome. We are also launching our Alumni Speaker Series during which alumni are paired with classes that align with their expertise to share their talents with Drew students and other visitors. Shannon Murphy ’11 kicked off this program in Drew’s Marine Science class by presenting her work with Conservation International where she works on large-scale marine management solutions that benefit both people and nature. 14

ALUMNI INDUCTION CEREMONY Eric Schulkin ‘09, Alumni Council and Member of the Board of Trustees welcomed the Class of 2023 into the Drew Alumni Community in June by reflecting on his own unique Drew experiences and connections that he’s made and maintained over the years. From a Machu Picchu DEALL trip to long-lasting friendships, professional networking opportunities, Eric explained to this graduating class the importance and powerful impact of the Drew community, and how as Alumni they can give back and stay connected to their community. If you are interested in participating in upcoming alumni activities, being a class representative, or volunteering in some other way, please email advancement@drewschool.org.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

DRAGON SPIRIT 2023 On April 28, 2023, Drew Just Wants to Have Fun exploded to 80’s tunes, costumes and lots of rubix cubes! Drew extends a heartfelt thank you to the many supporters of Dragon Spirit, Drew’s annual fundraising event. This year, we raised nearly $300,000 to support faculty salaries and had almost 200 people dancing to the tunes of Dirty Spoon, featuring our own Cait Jackson and Randolf Arguelles. Putting together an event like this takes tremendous effort and collaboration. Many thanks to the many parent volunteers who helped make this happen, with a special call-out to Susan DaSilva, Sarah Emberly Fishman, Ann Ledo-Lane, Jennie McClelland, Rachael Mundon, Jane Verma, Wendi Stern and Sebastian Lane for decorations and set-up, and to the many behind the scenes people whose help made the evening so special. Drew Just Wants to Have Fun brought out the best of the 80s and our community. From the music to the outfits, we do know how to have fun! We are so grateful for our community’s generous support of our extraordinary faculty — from sponsoring, buying tickets, underwriting faculty and staff tickets, donating items to the auction, participating in the live auction and paddle raise.

A Culture of Philanthropy Drew prides itself on inclusivity and having a strong culture of philanthropy. Because of the generosity of our community, we are able to offer competitive salaries for teachers, a high percentage of financial assistance for families, an innovative curriculum, and facilities that meet the evolving needs of our teachers.

There are many ways to support Drew: Cash, Check, Credit Card or Bank Transfer

Gifts of cash, typically payable by check, bank transfer, and credit card are tax deductible and provide immediate funds to the school. The easiest way to give is online at www.drewschool.org/support-us/ supporting-drew or by calling the Advancement Office.

Securities and Property

WAYS TO GIVE

Gifts of stocks, other securities, or property have two significant advantages to the donor — they are tax-deductible for the full fair-market value of the gift when it is made, and the donor does not pay capital gains on the appreciated value of the stock or property. Contact Selena Shadle at selenashadle@drewschool.org for more information on how to make a gift of this type.

Matching Gifts

Many companies have a matching gift program which can double and, in some cases, triple the value of your gift. Please check with your company’s Human Resources Department for more information.

Donor-Advised Funds

Donor-advised funds are a great way to support Drew and provide tax incentives for donors. At Drew, donor-advised funds can be used for gifts to the Annual Fund, capital campaigns, or Raise the Paddle at our Dragon Spirit event. However, they can not be used to fulfill written pledges. The IRS is fairly particular on how you use the funds. We can only accept donor-advised funds exclusively intended for charitable purposes. The IRS prohibits donor-advised fund account holders from receiving more than incidental benefits associated with the gift. For example, purchasing items of any kind at the live or online auction is not allowed. If you would like to use donor-advised funds to underwrite the auction, you must decline the tangible benefits that accompany it, such as tickets to the event.

Gifts in Kind

Drew welcomes donations of select objects as well as donations of auction items to the annual Dragon Spirit event. Gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or a record of purchase.

Legacy, Planned or Deferred Gifts

Many people choose to leave Drew in their estate plans or to make a deferred gift. These types of gifts ensure Drew’s financial stability for years to come and leave a valuable legacy of your commitment to the school. Such gifts can be made by leaving Drew as a beneficiary of your retirement funds or life insurance policy, or by naming Drew in your will or trust. In addition, certain types of trusts or deferred gifts can provide valuable tax incentives for the donor while providing for Drew’s future. Please contact Selena Shadle for more information at selenashadle@drewschool.org.

19

ENDOWMENT AND LEGACY GIF At Drew, endowment growth has become a priority. Drew’s total endowment is less than $500,000, significantly smaller than our peer schools. This means we have less to spend per student each year. The National Association of Independent Schools recommends having an endowment greater than a school’s annual operating budget. For Drew, that would mean an endowment of approximately $14 million. Each year, Drew draws a percentage from its endowment funds which can be spent on operating support, such as teacher salaries, or special projects, and provides flexibility to implement new curriculum or simply support classroom needs.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENDOWMENT

In this ever-changing economic environment, endowment funds have never been more important. A school’s endowment ensures excellence and provides a margin of security against uncertainty. Without adequate, wisely-invested endowment funds, an institution is forever at the mercy of conditions beyond its control, such as economic, philanthropic, and demographic fluctuations, as well as unforeseen catastrophic events. A strong endowment is the mark of an esteemed and enduring institution. Income from the endowment allows Drew to maintain its financial equilibrium while allowing for innovation.

HOW TO ESTABLISH AN ENDOWED FUND

Giving should be a shared experience, one that benefits both the donor and the institution. Creating a named endowment fund is one of the best ways to forge a permanent, personal connection to Drew. These investments in the school not only serve to honor donors, they also serve as tributes to others and help to encourage gifts as models of philanthropy that will become part of the everyday landscape of Drew. Endowment funds are established in perpetuity and are recognized yearly in the school’s Annual Report. For more information about contributing to an existing fund or establishing a permanent endowed fund, please contact Selena Shadle, Director of Advancement, at 415-430-3719 or selenashadle@drewsschool.org.

EXISTING ENDOWMENT FUNDS AT DREW John Magee Endowment Fund

Honoring John Magee’s 24 years of service to Drew, The John Magee Endowment Fund was established in 2013 to help support ongoing programming in the Cuddeback Assembly Wing as well as other uses including faculty professional development.

Senior Class Endowment Funds

Some years, the senior class families raise funds to establish a senior class endowment initiative and to benefit future generations of Drew students. We hope that these alums, in turn, might someday contribute to this fund themselves, giving back to the school that helped lay the foundation for their future.

20

FTS MAKING A LEGACY GIFT One way that Drew can grow its endowment is through legacy or planned giving. Many people choose to leave Drew in their estate plans or to make a deferred gift. Gifts through your will, trust, retirement plan or charitable trust ensure Drew’s financial stability for years to come and leave a valuable legacy of your commitment to the school. For more information about making a legacy gift, or to let us know that you have already included Drew in your estate plans, contact Director of Advancement Selena Shadle at 415-430-3719 or selenashadle@drewsschool.org.
