Head Coach Jimmy Borendame JIMMY BORENDAME Head Coach First Season Butler (2002)

Jimmy Borendame, an assistant coach the last five seasons at Virginia Tech, including in 2009 serving as associate head coach, is in his first season as head men’s tennis coach at Drake University. Last season, the nationally-ranked Hokies posted a 15-8 mark en route to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, where Virginia Tech advanced to the second round after defeating UNC Wilmington, 4-2. The Hokies twice achieved a program-high national ranking of No. 21 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls. Borendame was named the ITA Mideast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008, becoming one of only eight assistant coaches nationwide to receive the honor. During his tenure in Blacksburg, Va., he spearheaded recruiting, planned team travel, managed NCAA compliance, assisted with budget management, coordinated fund raising via Advantage Hokies (tennis booster club) and oversaw the strength and conditioning program. “Jimmy Borendame comes with an excellent coaching pedigree, including competitive and recruiting success, and demonstrates his fit with the Drake Athletics commitment to the holistic student-athlete experience,” Drake associate athletic director Heather Weems, who chaired the search committee, commented. “We are excited to have Jimmy join the Drake team, and know he has the ability to elevate the strong tradition in men’s tennis.” During his last five years at Virginia Tech, Borendame helped lead the Hokies to a 70-56 (.556) record, including three NCAA Tournament appearances. He furthered the development of Luka Somen, the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. Borendame, 30, came to Virginia Tech after spending one season at William and Mary (2003-04), where he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. While working with the Tribe, he helped William and Mary achieve a No. 38 national ranking, with victories over nationally-ranked Virginia Commonwealth and Tennessee.

Jimmy Borendame is in his first season leading the Drake program after being named head coach on Aug. 18, 2009.

In addition to his time at William and Mary, Borendame served as an assistant coach at West Virginia (2002-03), while also working as an assistant tennis professional at Woodstock Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind. A Wheaton, Ill. native, Borendame played collegiate tennis at Butler University, where he earned a national doubles ranking as high as No. 33, en route to posting a school record 101 doubles victories. A USPTA certified instructor, Borendame was tabbed to coach the 2006 and 2007 Mid-Atlantic National Junior teams that participated in the national championships in Champaign, Ill. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Butler University in 2002 and a master’s degree in sport management from West Virginia University in 2003. Borendame is married to the former Genevieve McNeill.
