Hardscape is the addition of any non-living element to a home’s landscape. This can include fences, walls, trellises, stepping stones, paver pathways, patios and fire pits. Hardscaping allows you to “expand your outdoor living area, so you can spend more time outdoors and entertain when the weather is nice,” said Allan Hull, the nursery manager at Peninsula Hardwood Mulch. So what is hot in terms of hardscapes? “Firepits are trendy right now,” said Hull. “A lot of people are using sitting walls by their firepits so they don’t have to worry about benches. It’s a built-in wall, which is nice.” David Chewey, a landscape architect with Custom Gardens, agreed. He’s noticed that customers are trading in wooden decks for raised patios with outdoor kitchens and firepits and fireplaces. “They are looking at it more as an outdoor extension of their house,” Chewey said. “It’s a nice addition to the home and allows you to enjoy all the seasons.” Using pavers in all shapes and sizes for patios (large slabs are most popular), driveways, walkways or poolside is also big right now. Some people are adding hot tubs, gazebos, garden benches, stepping stones, and ponds and fountains to the yard as well. Most hardcapes are
made from hard materials such as brick, stone, wood or concrete. “They also have porcelain pavers now, which is cool,” stated Chewey. When considering adding hardscape to your home, there are numerous items to keep in mind. This includes the size of what you want depending on how many people you like to entertain and how often; the time of year you most like to entertain (Chewey suggests covering for shade in the summer); and where you want to add hardscape in relation to your house and yard as well as a neighbor’s property (privacy fences or screens are an option). People tend to think small, simple and inexpensive when it comes to hardscape additions, but Hull suggests that putting extra effort and money into a project can make it look more pleasing and even add value to your home. He also recommends keeping in mind the quality of installation to avoid continual maintenance and seeking professional assistance when necessary. “If you do a good job, you almost never have to do any repairs,” he said. Chewey also recommended hiring a professional as well as checking with municipality ordinances before starting any project.

“I think this helps comfort them while human family members are away.” On the other hand, well-socialized dogs might prefer the energetic playtime and camaraderie of kennels, many of which have added serious perks, says Marc Illman, owner of the Pet Resort at Greensprings. The Williamsburg facility’s offerings include suites, pipedin music, sofa time, supervised play groups, nine yards and an “Association of Retired Pets” area for older, less rambunctious dogs.
Most boarding facilities will take puppies once they’re fully vaccinated – generally at 4½ months old –and administer medications as long as an animal isn’t very ill. Owners can bring in bedding, toys and food, providing some familiarity while keeping their homes locked up. Some also choose to board dogs near where they’re vacationing so they can visit, assuming the animal travels well.
“Dogs are naturally pack animals, and most of them like to be outside and playing with others,” Illman says. “They come in here with tails wagging.”

Here are five frequently overlooked spots, and how to make them sparkle: 1) Above eye level. The top of refrigerators, spaces above kitchen cabinets, air vents, ceiling fans and corner cobwebs are all easy to neglect. So start from the top of a room and work down. Don’t forget overhead light globes and covers, which can collect dust, grease and dead bugs. Tip: Smaller light globes usually can go in the dishwasher, while others can be soaked in hot, soapy water. 2) Around windows and sliding doors. Focus not only on inside frames, moulding and sills but on outside sills and tracks, which catch dirt and debris. Dust blinds and run light drapery through the washer; other curtains can be cleaned with a vacuum upholstery attachment. Tip: For thick layers of dust on blinds, put an old sock on each hand and lightly spray them with a multipurpose cleaner.

3) On surfaces touched daily. Dirty hands are always touching door knobs and frames, stair banisters, light switches and the cabinet faces in kitchens and bathrooms. Tip: With wood cabinets, use a soft rag dipped in a mixture of Murphy Oil Soap and warm water. 4) Appliances. After a season of holiday cooking, the refrigerator, oven, microwave, toaster and coffee maker need attention. Pull the fridge out from the wall to reach its sides, the wall behind it and the floor underneath it, which is a magnet for dust bunnies and food crumbs. Tip: Clean ovens by hand rather than using the self-cleaning option, which can cause a bad smell and heats ovens to dangerously high temperatures. To loosen baked-on food bits, let spray-on oven cleaner sit for a few hours. For a milder but effective cleanser, use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. 5) Clutter. It’s tough to ever do a truly deep scrubbing – or feel mentally cleansed – if rooms, closets and drawers are jammed with junk. Sort items into piles to keep, donate and throw away. Tip: To avoid feeling overwhelmed, make a list of small tasks to do each day. Instead of tackling entire rooms, think along the lines of medicine cabinets, nightstand drawers, storage areas under sinks or the inside of the fridge. Even finishing a single dresser drawer will be motivation to continue.

For less-confident gardeners, seek advice and plant By Alison Johnson
For anyone convinced they have the exact opposite of a green thumb, don’t despair: there are many options for annuals, perennials and shrubs that tend to be a bit harder to kill. Once well-established in the first weeks after planting, these plants require little by way of watering and pruning and often are more resistant to insect damage and disease. Unsure gardeners just need to ask for advice from an expert at any gardening center or the Virginia Cooperative Extension and pick one based on the location, sun exposure and soil composition of their yard. “Making sure they are planted correctly and in the right conditions – sun, shade, wet, etc. – is very important,” says Jessica Mueller, manager at Cooke’s Gardens in Williamsburg. continued on page 36

In general, the easiest plants to grow are native species – those that naturally occur in Hampton Roads, says Kendahl Huber, greens good manager at Anderson’s Home and Garden Showplace in Newport News. Some of her favorite examples are Virginia sweetspire, Serviceberry, Baptisia and JoePye Weed.
Going by yard layout, Crimson Pygmy Barberry, Carissa Holly, Dwarf Fountain Grass and Compacta Holly are among Mueller’s recommendations for areas of full sun. The latter, she adds, is a good substitute for English boxwood because it is similar in appearance, much less expensive and more diseaseresistant.
Tish Llaneza, owner of Countryside Gardens in Hampton, puts geraniums, petunias, impatiens and marigolds on her list of simple annuals. Llaneza singles out marigolds because they do well in sun and in cool weather in spring and fall. “They make a nice substitute for mums in the fall,” she says. Pansies, meanwhile, are great for adding winter color.
For full sun to partial shade, Mueller includes Little Richard Abelia (white summer flowers) and Liriope (purple flowers in late summer). For partial to full shade, she suggests hardy Cinnamon Fern or colorful Hellebores.
As for perennials, Llaneza highlights Shasta daisy, Phlox and particularly Black-eyed Susan, which showcase bright flowers from June to September: “They are very drought-tolerant, and also loved by butterflies and finches.” Speaking of butterflies, dwarf sizes of butterfly bushes – such as the Lo & Behold or Buzz series – top out at two to three feet and can fit into smaller gardens. For low-maintenance shrubs, try lilac, azalea and small varieties of nandina, holly, boxwood and arborvitae.
Finally, one interesting plant with year-round benefits is blueberries, which can be used in landscaping or grown in containers, Huber says. Blueberries provide spring flowers, summer fruit, red fall foliage and winter bark appeal. Huber’s main advice, though, is just to get outside and plant something. “Plants have gotten along for millions of years by themselves,” she notes. “We need not complicate gardening. Relax. The plants will let you know when they need a drink of water.”
