22 years. My how the years have passed! From a hotel field north of the interstate, to a parking lot off of Prentis Street for a couple years, the Iowa City Brewfest started with humble beginnings, but every year continued to grow. Then like everything else, we moved to the Old Chicago Parking lot in Coralville for a bigger footprint. Epic floods couldn’t wash us out there, but we outgrew that space as well. Then we moved back again to Iowa City, and again behind Orchard Green for one more year, but progress (and building a new building) forced us to move yet again. We finally settled in 2011 on our little bit of Heaven, right here in the Northside, and here we will remain. When you look at the history of the Northside here, it is really fitting that we’re in Iowa City’s 19th and early 20th century home for beer. At one point, three large breweries were on a lot the very ground that Brewfest occupies. Dig down about two feet under the city parking lot between Bluebird and George’s and you know what you’ll find? Brick, lots of bricks from Iowa City’s biggest brewery-the JP Dostal Great Midwestern Brewery. Destroyed in a massive fire in 1916, the remnants of the massive brewery were pushed into the basement and caves below, just below your feet today! Across the street between El Bandito’s and High Ground was the Englert City Brewing Company. You might recognize that name. Besides brewing and the Ice business, they also operated a very famous Theater in the heart of Downtown Iowa City. The only remaining brewery of the three is the Hotz and Geiger-Graf Brewing Company, now the home of La James and the Press Citizen amongst others. If you’re one of the lucky ones that have traveled down the rickety ladder into the bier caves, you’ve journeyed into the underground history of the folks that paved the way for our modern breweries today. There is so much world class beer being brewed in our state currently. The old adage that the more things change, the more they stay the same really rings true with beer and the Northside. There’s a lot of history right here and more being made every day! I thank you all for continuing to support our festival and our neighborhood, and helping us continue to write the history of Beer in the Northside! Prost! Doug “the bier guy” Alberhasky

The Do’s and Don’ts of the Northside Oktoberfest DO assign a designated driver. We want you to enjoy all the beer to

your heart desires, but we want to keep you and those around you safe. Everyone can come in and enjoy the festival, but only those with tickets and wristbands can drink. If your designated driver gets thirsty, buy them a mug for soda samples on N Linn St.

DO

bring the whole family. There is no age requirement for having fun, but remember, only 21+ get to drink. A valid ID will be required for wristbands.

DO

behave accordingly. We want everyone to enjoy themselves with all that Oktoberfest has to offer. If things get out of hand, you will be asked to leave the event.

DO

check the morning weather report. Rain or shine the event will take place. Come prepared for whatever Mother Nature decided to throw our way!

DO

get yourself a pretzel necklace! It’s the best way to say to the world “Hey I’m here to have fun!” Plus, how else are you going to cleanse your palate? Get creative and make it a statement piece.

DON’T drop your glass. You are given ONE complimentary glass

when you enter the event. IF you break it, you need to clean it up with a provided broom and dustpan and you can buy a new one from the glass station.

DON’T smoke. Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) in the Oktoberfest area is not permitted by state and city law. If you must smoke, mosey over to an area outside of the festival.

DON’T take alcohol outside of the festival area. You don’t want to find out what happens when you do!

DON’T drink on an empty stomach. Stay hydrated! There are

plenty of delicious restaurants in the downtown area to prepare your stomach for an afternoon of drinking.
