THE «HERO’S JOURNEY» in TRIBUTE TO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Every year Italian cultural association dotART involves photographers from all over the world in publishing and exhibition projects through its platform Exhibit Around. These projects result in photo books and group exhibitions that culminate during Trieste Photo Days, the international photo festival that dotART has been organising since 2014. During its eight editions, Trieste Photo Days has hosted some of the world’s greatest street photographers: Martin Parr, Alex Webb, Bruce Gilden, Nick Turpin and many others, establishing itself as a European reference point for all lovers of urban photography.

Tales of the Unwritten was born with the aim of celebrating urban photography. The project took shape at the end of 2020 with an open call on Exhibit Around. The idea is to create a big collective tribute to street photography, inviting the most important street collectives in activity as special guests of the project: BULB Photos, iNPUBLiC, Observe, Un-posed, VoidTokyo and Women Street Photographers. The open call for Tales of the Unwritten was an incredible success and attracted 5,000 photos and 270 portfolios from over 620 photographers. After careful curatorial work, the dotART staff selects 189 authors from five continents, who officially become part of the project together with the photographers of the collectives. The result is the full-bodied volume you are holding in your hands, from which a major group exhibition will be based as part of the 2021 edition of Trieste Photo Days.

Tales of the Unwritten contains dozens of small and big stories told through street photography: an immediate and real photographic genre that reveals unseen aspects of society, hidden corners of urban spaces, contrasts and contradictions of our time, celebrations of beauty or chronicles of urban decay. In just one word: stories. Hence the title of the project and the idea of structuring the volume in twelve chapters freely inspired by the stages of the “hero’s journey”: a narrative model that defines the structure at the basis of modern stories. In its infinite variations, this model is widely used in cinema but has its roots in Aristotle’s times. It has been analysed, refined, updated, overturned, denied, and rehabilitated by experts in narratology such as Joseph Campbell, Christopher Vogler, Dara Marks, John Truby, John Yorke and Robert McKee. And now, with a few “detours” here and there, Tales of the Unwritten also tries to follow this three-act path with street photography.

the hero’s everyday life

Every proper story begins by showing the “hero”, the protagonist, in his “ordinary world”. Here we have several protagonists, at least one for each photo: many incipits that tell us the routine of our heroes, perfectly represented by the most classic street photography.

The Collectives

BULB PHOTOS The Bulb Collective was founded in January 2015 by Michail after an Open Day held in Bucharest. Since then, the collective has widened its geographical scope and had more than 50 photographers from 6 countries in the Balkans in early 2020. In the mid-2020 the format changed. The photographers are active in urban (and rural) photography with an expressive shift to include highly aesthetic and poetic images in their works. They share the same vision but not the same perspective, and that gives the necessary “polyphony” in their extremely ambitious attempt to create iconic images and to be the best in metamorphosing and interpreting all aspects of life in this highly contradictory and fascinating world. Since June 2020, BULB, Street Core Photography and PHOS (Street Photography Days) joined forces. BULB (2015), SCP (2014) and PHOS (2018) were all founded by Michail and they evolved so much that a scaling up was needed. The new structure is run by our team of editors and organisers who ensure daily management and features talented photographers, while running at the same time our FB and IG accounts! We organize projects in the Balkans and beyond, as well as exhibitions in European galleries, assignments in cooperation with foreign and local Photo Clubs, workshops, residential seminars, and we also publish photobooks. In the last 5 years, among other projects, BULB published 10 over 100-page books, 20 bimonthly eZines, held numerous international exhibitions and organised 6 editions of the PHOS Street Photography Days. BULB was the featured collective in the 2017 Miami Street Photography Festival.

we believe in series This series is a tribute to those “unconscious actors” I have the fate/chance to meet while surfing the streets. It is as if I was observing myself in a sort of virtual mirror: I am them, they are the transposition into images of my wandering joy. Street photographers from all over the world walk the streets just for the pleasure of being there, feeling just one another among others. The project is in their mind, they believe in series.

Ikiatari Battari Ikiatari battari (行き当たりばったり) is a Japanese saying to express the action of “wandering without purpose”. I usually begin my wanderings with no idea about what to shoot in Tokyo, but then I realized that the “Eastern Capital” just owns those unique atmospheres that inspire me so much.

the mentor

The mentor is one of the archetypal figures theorised by Jung and borrowed by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and later by Chrisopher Volger in The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers. The role of the Mentor in the stories is to offer material and spiritual help to the hero. Our mentors offer more mundane but no less important things. They are street vendors, barmen and shopkeepers, photographed in their working environments.

junk The title for this series was inspired by Paul McCartney’s song Junk. Like the song, this series presents remnants of untold stories – discarded memories of transient lives reduced to the kitsch “still life” tableaux of antique shops and flea markets throughout the world. So many pathetic tokens of everlasting love gathered in a “broken hearted jubilee”. Life’s proud accumulations eternally consigned to the scrapbook of existence. These fading memories of childhood dreams and lost illusions seem to shout – like so many abandoned dogs in a rescue shelter, pleading to be adopted and treasured once again. Dust to dust, ashes to ashes. Here lie the artefacts of forgotten souls. Junkyard tales that will forever remain unwritten.

The Collectives

iN-PUBLiC

iN-PUBLiC is an ongoing project founded by Nick Turpin in 2000, with the intention of bringing together like-minded photographers to promote Street Photography as a distinct and specific approach. The project started with an international group of street photographers that worked as a collective for 18 years. It was the first international collective of street photographers and played a significant role in driving the contemporary resurgence of interest in Street Photography.

At the end of 2018, a split occurred after posting a computergenerated image and a staged “street photograph”. A solution for the group that could include both candid public photography and staged, computational or manipulated images could not be found and the site was archived. In 2020, 20 years after its founding, iN-PUBLiC was relaunched again to promote the best photographic works being made candidly in public places. Recognising that the term “Street Photography” has come to cover many methods, the new iN-PUBLiC is particularly focused on photographers making documentary images of everyday life in the most interesting and innovative ways. A few of our photographers work on the borders of Street Photography, where it meets Art, Conceptual or Documentary Photography and they would not necessarily consider themselves traditional Street Photographers, but we believe this is where some of the most interesting works are born.

Circus Of Life Inside the ruins of a beautiful theatre in Old Havana built in 1919, more than two dozen youths between 6 and 18 years old were enthusiastically pursuing their training in circus. The only equipment visible in the studio, besides props for tightrope walkers, was a piece of carpet used as a mat. It was a typical day at Habana Circus’s afterschool programs. Despite the sunlight shining through the holes in the roof four stories above, the company is happy to finally have a home after nine years of practicing in parks and temporary spaces. I had the privilege of visiting Habana Circus in November 2019. Habana Circus offers the possibility to children who love circus arts to fulfil their dreams and goals of becoming professional artists. In doing so, they can help their families move forward, and they also can travel and get to know the world through their art. And by serving as part of our faculty and teaching other youth, they can change the vision and quality of life for others who share their dreams.

Chromorama Shot in various locations around the world, the name of this series of my street photography Chromorama derives from my love of colour. While there are many other important aspects to a photograph, I find that this component, whether striking and vibrant, or apparent in its absence, is what most provides the emotional aspect to an image. My aim is to show the humour, mundanity, and colour of everyday life.

A safari in the middle of the “special world”, as the protagonist approaches what Vogler calls the “inmost cave”. Metropolitan Ghosts The idea of this work came to me by making some considerations on the epochal change we have witnessed in the last decades, and on the importance and role of people in the contemporary world. While technology and digital tools are an opportunity for some, they represent a problem for many others. The efforts produced to try to destroy barriers, to try to bring people closer, to make them communicate faster, to improve their lives, seem to have the opposite effect. The idea of the future, which in not-sodistant times was accompanied by a sense of optimism and hope, is now seen as a concern and an anguish. Over the centuries, humanity has repeatedly found itself in front of epochal passages, at the border lines between a known world and a new one to explore, and this is what we have been experiencing in these decades. Man is no longer at the centre of the universe, he is no longer the subject of history and is now reduced to a functionary of technical apparatus. In this scenario, the human soul is disoriented and loses importance. instead of rising and aiming for higher goals.

Alice In The Cities This portfolio pays tribute to the homonymous film of the “old master” Wim Wenders. It is mainly inspired by a still frame of the film subtitled “That’s a lovely picture. It’s so empty.” y photographic approach attempts to seize the vision that pervades in the unadulterated look of the small child, as she wanders M the contemporary cities of Europe and is confronted with the unfamiliar urban landscape. Though I am fully aware that my roaming is affected by me being a reflective adult, the original idea proves to be a catalyst and defines the development of the whole project: constructed thought is infused in the automatic depiction of scenes from everyday life. Thus, I’m after the fundamental core of the facts by removing the veil of familiarity imposed by the idleness of adult vision.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

OBSERVE is an international photography collective focused primarily on the use of candid street photography. Spanning four continents, we are united by a common fascination with watching and documenting the diverse humanity that surrounds us. While acknowledging that photography is an individual pursuit at its core, our membership finds benefit in mutual curation and support, discussion, and other collaborative interactions.

OBSERVE

OBSERVE does not gaze at its own navel, it finds yours much more interesting. Modern media envelops us in an unending stream of perfect images displaying beautiful people living ideal lives and in comparison, the value and beauty of the quotidian can easily be forgotten. We use our sensitivity to the everyday world which surrounds us to capture what might otherwise go unnoticed. OBSERVE mixes a fine photographic cocktail. A strength of photography is its ability to generate multiple narratives from a singular event, by connecting seemingly unrelated elements or imposing form where none is obvious. Similarly, by sharing side-by-side our own personal bodies of work we hope to create something enduring and greater than the sum of its parts. OBSERVE does not believe there is a need to choose between pudding and cake. Although it was our shared interest in street photography that brought us together, we do not limit ourselves solely to one type of photographic endeavour. Our members are exploring various genres and methods of photographic practice, hoping to invigorate each other and the viewing public through experimentation with our shared art and passion.

Territories The first impulse behind this experimental project was to inject street photography methodology - mostly the reliance on serendipity and spontaneous behaviour - into architectural photography. Inspired by Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine’s films, I wanted to show buildings through the eyes of their users, presenting spaces as inhabited territories. Acclaimed works of architecture become dramatic backdrops to everyday scenes, their radical geometries framing simple acts. This series plays with the notion of contextual portraiture. On the one hand, architecture is used as a frame, focusing compositions onto a subject with bold volumes and strong lines. On the other hand, people give meaning and scale to the spaces shown. Their attitude builds our perception of the building’s atmosphere. We are shaped by our environment, and we shape it continuously and subconsciously by the simple act of inhabiting it.

Rear View As a street photographer, my emphasis has traditionally been on capturing people’s faces. However, there is another approach which I have explored: suggesting storylines through body language and attitudes rather than expressions. My interest here is how subjects populate scenes and interact with their surroundings, creating compositions with aesthetic value that have visual tension and beg a question or two. Seeing people somewhat anonymously from the back, or at least from an angle where faces are not prominent, broadens the narrative by making images more open to interpretation. The viewer is invited to build content using imagination, memories, experiences, and knowledge. Ultimately, the viewer might project onto unrecognizable people, and in this way connect with the photos. I have also tried to convey an element of humour that will give a degree of ambiguity to the images and leave the door slightly open for the viewer to peek in.

The I Within This series captures introspective insights in Istanbul’s ineffable immediacy. The mere utterance of the name conjures up visions of mystery and intrigue. Capitalizing on a combination of good fortune and connections, my return after a nineteen-year absence revealed a city on the edge, both economically and politically. Similar to most sprawling metropolises, one’s first interactions are invariably overwhelming, yet it slowly reveals its hüzün, a melancholic underbelly so eloquently described by Orhan Pamuk.

The Narrow Road To The Deep North The project is inspired by my lifelong fascination with Japanese culture and its idiosyncrasies. Travelling from hyperkinetic Tokyo to the traditional rural north, spending time in Tokyo at the beginning and end of the journey, I took part in Hanami (the Japanese tradition of cherry blossom viewing) at various locations along the way, from local villages to larger venues. The cherry blossoms and their magnificent but short blooming season represent a metaphor for the transience and fragility of life, a major tenet of Buddhism and Bushido (the codified samurai way of life), and a symbol of spring, the time of renewal and celebration.

The Collectives

Un-posed

Un-Posed was brought to life in 2011. The collective consists of photographers who specialise in unposed form of documentary also known as Street Photography. A genre which reveals the symbols and anecdotes hidden in everyday life which generally go unnoticed.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Damian Chrobak Maciej Dakowicz Jamie Fyson Howard Joanna Kinowska Ania Kłosek Monika Krzyszkowska Thomas Kulbowski Marta Rybicka Adrian Wykrota

The aim of the group is to promote the work of its members and Polish Street Photography in general, to create a collective body of work, as well as to shape visual awareness of the public sphere through the medium of photography, workshops, exhibitions, and other activities. While each member has their own individual style, which demonstrates the breadth and depth of the medium, what they all have in common is a love for hard work, patience, the ability to anticipate events by putting themselves in the right place at the right time and an instinctive understanding of when to capture those moments of significance that fleetingly occur in the frame. To date, Un-Posed has been exhibited as a collective at the Leica Gallery in Warsaw, Photography Month in Berlin, as well as in the Street Photography Now and Eastreet projects. Another turning point: the climax of the story, which reaches here its maximum tension and drama. We have returned to the ‘ordinary world’, but we have changed, and it is as if we have been reborn. The world around us now shines in a new light. It seems different, full of beauty, street art and elements that only a conscious eye (that of a photographer, in our case) can grasp.

The most evident signs are the countless and extraordinary works of art that colour old facades of the Victorian buildings, underpasses and fences of buildings undergoing renovation and which, soon, became the main attraction of the city. In fact, it’s a real project whose importance is highlighted by the fact that these works are not relegated to the extreme suburbs or to the most popular neighbourhoods but make a fine show of themselves in the streets of the centre among squares, monuments and historic buildings, without ever disturbing, a discreet yet majestic presence. A street-art of the highest quality that colours, amuses, amazes and amazes.

Naples Street Art In this recent work I have documented some episodes of street art in Naples which in recent years has been enriched with a lot of creations by Italian and foreign artists, starting from the works of the French artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest, inspired above all by Caravaggio, and of Banksy, who created “Madonna with a gun”, his only work in Italy. The Italo-Dutch Jorit, one of the most interesting artists, painted large murals in the city and suburbs, inspired by various characters of Neapolitan culture, such as San Gennaro and Maradona. Political murals devoted to Fidel Castro and Giulio Regeni alternate with the works of artists such as Zilda, Tvboy, Roxy in the Box and Trallallà, who covered the walls of the historic centre with sirens which, like Parthenope, reminds of the mythical origins of the city.

new equilibrium

The last stage of the “hero’s journey” represents a sort of “narrative counterpoint” to the first chapter, like two volumes at the ends of a shelf full of books. We find our protagonists again in their daily lives, but they are mirror lives compared to the incipit. The balance has now changed, the objectives are different, the hero has overcome his fatal flaw and completed his journey. The story is over, the credits are rolling!
