THE ENCHANTMENT OF SUMMER

WHERE MOMENTS MAKE MEMORIES

Spellbinding views from dawn to dusk: be captivated by the ever-changing display of light on Sylt

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SUMMERS OF THE YEAR

Watching the butterflies dance in a mountain pasture, a casual stroll along the boulevard in flip-flops, discovering the most beautiful roads in the region in a classic car, listening to open-air concerts and enjoying warm evenings under the stars: summer is the time to float through life a little rather than just plodding along. At establishments in the Hommage Luxury Hotels Collection, the year doesn’t have just one summer, but several – packed with culture and cuisine, lust for life and lifestyle, spa and sport, nature and nightlife.

Sea and stars this summer: At the recently fully refurbished and now – if you can believe it – even-more-beautiful Söl’ring Hof in the Rantum dunes, you can look forward to exclusive summer indulgence: familial, luxurious and right on the North Sea coast. Water sports, golf, riding and more: leisure activities beyond your wildest dreams await on Germany’s most beautiful island – and, of course, Jan-Philipp Berner’s multiple-award-winning cuisine.

C ity break with parks and rivers this summer: You should never underestimate Bremen. This is true in football – and especially of the city itself on the banks of the Weser. Here, Hanseatic tradition, old-town charm, excursion options and a modern urban setting combine to form something that is really worth experiencing. At the heart of all this and in an idyllic setting lies Parkhotel Bremen, on the Hollersee in the Bürgerpark – your fairy-tale city hideaway with spa facilities.

Asummer in the city with parks and rivers: The city on the Rhine is the epitome of art, fashion, lifestyle and cosmopolitan flair – for Rhenish joie de vivre and the nonchalance of simply being (in Düsseldorf). All this can also be felt at Hotel Kö59 and, of course, on our ‘home boulevard’, the renowned Königsallee: an incomparable promenade for shopping, seeing,

marvelling – and the starting point for your summer-in-the-city experiences.

Savoir vivre this summer: Wiesbaden entices with a Mediterranean lifestyle and cultural highlights, the Rheingau with fabulous (cycling and wine) trails and rustic wineries. Hotel Nassauer Hof, at the heart of the state capital, offers a contemporary grand hotel ambience with its own thermal baths and exclusive spa and beauty area with a view of the city.

Plenty to discover this summer: The Black Forest countryside, the diversity of the cosmopolitan city of culture, Baden cuisine and the sun-kissed regional wines – there is plenty to enjoy in and around Baden-Baden. If you then let yourself be pampered at Hotel Maison Messmer – in the stunning art deco–style Royal Spa, for example – then that may well be the most perfect of summers.

Recharge and breathe deeply this summer: Set in the Kitzbühel Alps, Hotel Grand Tirolia offers you pure relaxation: fresh mountain air, magnificent landscapes, fantastic opportunities for almost any kind of sport and leisure activity. Relax body and soul in the 2,000 sq. m Grand Alps Spa with the sophisticated city at your feet – and the unique Eichenheim Championship golf course awaits just in front of the hotel.

Fit for a king: the Kaiserteich lake in Düsseldorf

RENDEZVOUS WITH THE CITY

THERE IS A SENSE OF NONCHALANCE IN THE AIR. YOU AMBLE THROUGH THE STREETS, THE SUN SHINING ON YOUR SKIN AND AN ICE CREAM IN YOUR HAND. YOU HEAR MUSIC FROM STREETSIDE CAFES AND THE LAUGHTER OF THOSE AROUND YOU. IT’S SUMMER IN THE CITY.

Look forward to your next city break and spend a perfect summer’s day in four stunning German cities: the worldly Hanseatic city of Bremen, the cosmopolitan metropolis of Düsseldorf, the fun-loving health resort of Wiesbaden and the sophisticated spa town of Baden-Baden.

If a summer day turns out to be as lovely as your breakfast location, then you’ve hit the jackpot with a stay at our city hotels. At Parkhotel Bremen, you enjoy a pleasurable

start to the morning with a view of the countryside – whether from your balcony or the sun terrace right by the Hollersee. If you would like to gather a quick first impression of Düsseldorf or Wiesbaden before taking the plunge into the hustle and bustle of the city, you will find the superb breakfast at Hotel Kö59 or in Hotel Nassauer Hof’s Orangerie twice as enjoyable.

You can then head straight into the lively streets. And the city hotels’ excellent location means you will find yourself right at the heart of things when it comes to making the most of the sights, museums, cafes and boutiques. Or use the morning for a stroll in one of the many parks. In Bremen, you will find the Bürgerpark right outside the front door – just grab your picnic blanket. During a city break to Baden-Baden, you can’t miss

Champagne moments on the penthouse terrace at Maison Messmer

a detour to the picturesque Black Forest. At the heart of the city, you can also find a shady spot along the Lichtentaler Allee and Oos river to spend a little time if you haven’t been drawn in by the museums.

How about cooling off a little? After an afternoon spent exploring, a refreshing dip in the pool is just the ticket on a hot summer’s day. Back at the Parkhotel, you can swim a few laps in the outdoor pool. At Hotel Nassauer Hof, the rooftop thermal pool above the roofs of Wiesbaden invites you to relax all year round – and to sunbathe on the roof terrace in summer. Enjoy the Royal Spa’s luxurious pool and sunny outdoor terrace in Baden-Baden or spend the afternoon at the Hardtbergbad pool if you are looking for additional activities in and out of the water.

In the evening, each city becomes a playground full of open-air concerts, festivals and more.

TOP 11 OF 111

OUR PERSONAL TRAVEL GUIDE

There seems to be a near-limitless number of travel guides on the market and the shelves in book stores are frequently several metres long. You then often find pages and pages of descriptions and recommendations for wellknown sights and attractions. We have put together 11 interesting places for you

Wine as far as the eye can see: Rheingau Culinary fare with historical flair: the Malersaal hall at Maison Messmer The pearl of the North Sea: the Sylter Royal

It works the same way online: even in a global network, most people still go on and on about the same selfie spots. Anyone who wants to discover a place for themselves needs to read something different.

This is precisely why we initiated a collaboration with Emons Verlag, publisher of popular book series ‘111 Places That You Must Not Miss’. These travel guides contain special places away from well-known clichés. From the 111 places, we have exclusively compiled the ‘Top 11 of 111’ in a handy little book and would like to invite our guests to discover unusual new things around the Hommage Luxury Hotel locations.

So, join us on our journey into paradise ... of which, surprisingly, there are two: one in Düsseldorf and another in Baden-Baden. Paradice in Bremen is open from September to March. Alternatively, you can get started at Universum at any time except Mondays and learn something useful at the same time. Near Kitzbühel, on the other hand, you can learn about favourite locations from drama series Der Bergdoktor and why there isn’t any beer there. You can make yourself at home on Arche Noah in Wiesbaden, while on Sylt, you can get cosy in a cafe in a labyrinth of subterranean bunker corridors.

The 11 places that we have compiled will get our guests in the mood for history and stories about our hotels. From autumn, you will find your own personal copy in your room on arrival – and if this whets your appetite to discover more, you can purchase the corresponding ‘111 Places’ volume from us in reception.

Tee off with a view: Eichenheim golf course Rhine romance meets the modern in Düsseldorf A fairy-tale setting: Parkhotel in the Bürgerpark

Sports enthusiasts like Johannes Lehberger will find their little slice of heaven around the Grand Tirolia.

KITZBÜHEL …

Kitzbühel and Sylt: two much-loved locations that couldn’t be more unique and exclusive. Picturesque mountain idyll or untamed ocean beauty – what will be your next destination? The conversation between the two General Managers Johannes Lehberger of Grand Tirolia Kitzbühel and Jan-Phillipp Berner of Söl’ring Hof Sylt doesn’t necessarily make that decision any easier. But why can’t it be both?!

Johannes’s insider tip for Kitzbühel

What would Kitzbühel be without Rosi’s Sonnbergstuben? The cosy Tyrolean-style mountain chalet isn’t just known for its fantastic views and the finest Austrian cuisine. Rosi Schipflinger, also known as the ‘singing landlady’, has welcomed countless famous guests and has long been a legend herself in Kitzbühel and beyond.

Johannes Lehberger: Servus, Jan! So, how are things in the north?

Jan-Philipp Berner: Moin, Johannes! It’s summer on Sylt, so things couldn’t be better! What about you?

Johannes: I’m just enjoying the fantastic weather on our sun terrace. It made me think of you! The first summer season has opened at Grand Tirolia and you are of course very welcome to come and visit us in beautiful Kitzbühel. You must miss the vast expanses we enjoy here while you’re on your island. I’ll reserve a suite for you with an Alpine view. It will take your breath away.

Jan-Philipp: Thanks for the invitation. I definitely don’t want to miss the extraordinary Alpine view. We’ll have to see whether it can compete with the view from my restaurant overlooking the Rantum dunes and North Sea. You should come and experience the sunset here some time; it’s astounding!

Oh, and speaking of the North Sea, it’ll soon be time for my favourite excursions into the mud flats and salt marshes again. As an outdoor type, you’d really like that, wouldn’t you?

Johannes: A trip into the salt marshes definitely sounds like an adventure. But I’ll be honest with you: you just can’t beat a hike to the green mountain pastures. And if I need a bit more action, I jump on my mountain bike and cycle

up the Hahnenkamm – to cool off, I jump into the Speichersee Ehrenbachhöhe. The perfect summer’s day. Try to beat that!

Jan-Philipp: Well, if you’re looking for more action, you’ve come to the right place here: windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing and much more – and cooling off in the sea is always included. Kitzbühel can’t keep up with Sylt when it comes to water sports.

Johannes: No way! From stand-up paddling to canoe trips to windsurfing, there’s always something on offer here. And if I want to take things easier, I swim a few laps in our large outdoor pool. The new Grand Alps Spa is one of the most beautiful spas in the region and will even win over North Sea fans like you.

Jan-Philipp: Now I’m excited. Until then, I’ll get comfy in my Strandkorb.

Johannes: Well, Jan, I need to get on. I’m going to be playing a round of golf later.

Jan-Philipp: Take care, then. It was nice chatting with you, Johannes. Bye for now!

AN AGE TO FALL IN LOVE WITH

In Germany, they are known as ‘oldtimers’. Collectors and aficionados refer to them as historic automobiles or classic cars. Hardly anyone knows more about them than JP Rathgen – and he can talk enthusiastically and inspirationally about them at one and the same time. We met him in Hamburg.

With Hotel Maison Messmer’s classic car on a trip in the Black Forest

To give all those who don’t drive one a sense of what it’s like: what distinguishes a trip in a classic car from a ‘normal’ car journey?

Johann Philip Rathgen: In a classic car, you have a much more intensive sense of your surroundings. You move more slowly, ‘experience’ slowing down in the utmost of comfort. Classic cars often have really big windows because their design doesn’t follow a c W-value. This means you can enjoy the view much more consciously.

Editor: Where is it especially fun to drive in a classic car?

JP: Two regions are my all-time favourites: Taunus and Eifel. You start off from Düsseldorf towards the Nürburgring and then take a leisurely drive through idyllic Eifel villages. To explore the Taunus, you go from Frankfurt to Bad Homburg. You can discover little villages towards Feldberg and drive to beautiful Wiesbaden via the lovely Taunus towns of Kronberg, Königstein and Eppstein.

Editor: When you arrive in your classic car, what are you looking for in a hotel?

JP: Spacious garages or covered parking spaces: classic cars are often smaller than modern cars, but they have a large turning circle. Anyone who has converted their classic to an electric drive is grateful for weatherproof charging stations. If the hotel staff are aware of good routes and know where the nearest petrol station or garage is: fantastic! The icing on the cake would be flexible arrival times and cancellation conditions for classic drivers – with a car that’s 40 years old or more, things don’t always go as planned.

JOHANN PHILIP RATHGEN,

nicknamed JP by friends and business partners, is CEO of Classic Driver, the leading international marketplace and magazine for historic cars and sophisticated lifestyle. He has been a member of the jury for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este for a number of years now – one of the most important, tradition-steeped beauty contests for historic automobiles and bikes. Born in Hamburg, he now lives in Zürich when he isn’t travelling somewhere around the world.

Editor: Where does your love of historic cars come from?

JP: My father was a passionate Citroën collector, and although there was a lot of anguish there – because they were beautiful things, but always broken – the spark jumped to me

Editor: How did you turn your interest into a career?

JP: After finishing school and two years travelling, I came to Classic Driver in 1999: first as a trainee and then as a volunteer. After training as a publisher with a qualification in journalism from the Medienschule Hamburg, I stayed and am now CEO.

Editor: What is Classic Driver?

JP: Classic Driver was founded in 1998 – so, at a time when everything ran as notices in print magazines – as an online marketplace for collectors of historic cars. This meant we were more up to date than our print competition and were represented globally. We were the first medium to have our own online editorial team, making us true pioneers, and grew into a leading magazine for classic cars and lifestyle – at the time, I was Germany’s first online editor. .

Editor: What does automobility mean to you?

JP: First, it’s about getting from A to B when I want, even over great distances. For me, cars are primarily part of our cultural heritage. We all familiar with images from the 50s and 60s: VW Beetles with roof racks and three kids on the back seat on their way to Italy – a little revolution. The possibility of travelling by car was crucial in international understanding and made a united Europe possible for the first time.

Editor: Is praising cars – considering climate protection and sustainability –still appropriate today?

JP: Absolutely! We need more car-free city centre areas and priority investment in public transport and railways. I often travel from Zürich to Hamburg – by train, because it allows me to work really well. And I don’t actually own a car – in Zürich, trains go from the airport to the city every ten minutes. With classic cars, people often think first and foremost about fuel consumption and CO2. But consider how few kilometres a classic car drives and how carefully it is driven. Producing a new car puts disproportionately more strain on the environment – and, for me, preserving nice things equates to sustainability.

Editor: What if people want to know which model you would recommend as an investment ...?

JP: I’d say: buy a car you’d like to take a trip in with a loved one. From Bremen to Sylt, for example, or through the Black Forest. Even if it doesn’t increase in value, you’ll still have a great time – and that’s what it’s all about.

Life is golden. That’s why the Universe sent you here.

The Golden, you immediately feel that you’re in the best hands. The cosily stylish ambience, cosmopolitan atmosphere and exquisite drinks all contribute to this sense of wellbeing – and the dedicated team and bar manager Melissa Zikos, your passionate host, are worth their weight in gold when it comes to ensuring a great time.

‘I actually prefer drinking beer,’ laughs Melissa. But she does have a favourite cocktail, of course: Cheese Cake, a creation by a bar keeping friend of hers. And now we get to the latest cocktail trends: what’s in, Melissa? Fresh herbs, low-alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks, and inspirations from cuisine are popular.

‘Food pairing’ is what bar professionals call it when drinks match with dishes or desserts or even combine to form an exquisite artistic unit. And speaking of professionals: what makes a good bartender? Perfect craftsmanship, in-depth knowledge and creative inspiration to make something new – regardless of personal taste. But ‘putting all your heart into being a host, empathising, being able to and wanting to listen,’ are most important for Melissa (and her guests). Because people really do spill their hearts out at the bar and reveal things about their life that they otherwise keep to themselves. Real life can sometimes mimic the movies.

A classic piano bar with cigar lounge – at Hotel Nassauer Hof, you can while away the evening stylishly with exquisite drinks. Bar manager Patrick Wokan and his team lend a contemporary freshness to the traditional ambience – with skill, ideas and charm.

PATRICK WOKAN

After training as a hotel specialist at Parkhotel Rödermark, he went on to work at the gourmet restaurant of Schlosshotel Kronberg, and then at Jimmys Bar as a bartender. He then undertook additional training to become an IHK-certified bar mixer (IHK: German Chamber of Industry and Commerce). Since 2014, he has been managing the bar at Hotel Nassauer Hof and pays particular attention to developing young talent. Favourite drinks: classics like Whisky Sour and Negroni.

PATRICK’S FROZEN STRAWBERRY

Puree some strawberries and fresh mint, mix in a blender along with some rum, lime juice and a touch of chilli, serve over crushed ice in a margarita glass decorated with mint.

‘A perfect mix.’ Patrick Wokan is talking about his drinks, of course. But also the experience as a whole, which draws Wiesbaden regulars, cigar aficionados, night owls and – often famous – hotel guests to the bar at Hotel Nassauer Hof every day. They all enjoy the unique atmosphere and extensive selection of excellent whiskies, spirits and cocktail creations with sophisticated live music. The bar manager also pays special attention to the choice and repertoire of the musicians: tinkling out the usual bar jazz numbers on the piano – no way! Today, virtuosity, variety, modernity and the right feel for the atmosphere and guests are required. And this also applies to the drinks: the bar doesn’t just have the classics on its menu; it also frequently surprises with seasonal specialities. Patrick even spontaneously creates the fruity strawberry summer cocktail as we chat. What does he think is important besides creativity and expertise: ‘listening, enjoying a chat, openness – but also absolute discretion.’ As we said before: it’s all about the mix. .

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Our luxury hotels are very aware of their impact in their respective regions. This is why we actively protect the surrounding countryside and biodiversity. Specific goals include using water and energy sparingly. Hotel Nassauer Hof in Wiesbaden, Maison Messmer in Baden-Baden and Grand Tirolia Kitzbühel also maintain their own bees and thus contribute to biodiversity. After all, pollination by bees is indispensable for the survival of our ecosystems.

REGIONALITY AND SEASONALITY

So as to keep our CO2 emissions as low as possible, we work with regional partners and suppliers. All restaurants in our luxury hotels use consistently regional and seasonal products and actively avoid food waste. You will also find a vegetarian or vegan selection on our menus.

CONSERVING RESOURCES

We document and analyse our water and energy consumption to make our successes transparent. Our hotels use genuine green electricity or offer room cleaning upon guest request. We also only use paper with the Blue Angel environmental label. And you can feel it:

even this newspaper is made from 100%-recycled waste paper and is printed 100% climate-neutrally.

FAIR EMPLOYERS

The excellence of our establishments is thanks to the commitment of our teams. As a ‘Fair Jobs Hotel’ partner, we do more than just creating equitable working conditions and supporting employees. Employees at all of our hotels enjoy premium benefits such as discounts on accommodation, free yoga courses with inhouse instructors and additional compensation.
