WELCOME TO THE

SUMMER 2015

CULTUREFOX.IE

NEVER MISS OUT The Arts Council’s new, upgraded CULTUREFOX events guide is now live. Free, faster, easy to use – and personalised for you. Never miss out again.

A note from our Artistic Director JULIE KELLEHER Can it really be summer so soon? The past few months have flown by in a blur of costumes, lights, orchestras and Faustian pacts! This season there’s all kinds of journeys to go on, some over familiar territory, with well-known and beloved titles, and some over uncharted ground with titles as yet unproduced or unseen in Ireland. We’ve been overwhelmed by your support for the programme so far this year and we sincerely hope that, this coming season, you will find a story or experience that takes you on an unforgettable journey, even if just for an hour or two! Have your socks knocked off by our season highlights, which includes the very cool, contemporary circus act CIRCA, all the way from Australia, with their fabulous show BEYOND - full of music to soothe the soul and circus tricks to blow your mind. We’re very proud to be presenting this show with Cork Midsummer Festival for the first time in Ireland. Take a trip with us to small town Ireland in 1967 as we delve in to the hearts and minds of Brian Friel’s Lovers and decide for yourself who are the real winners and losers in these touching stories. Bear witness to the Irish première of Ian Pattison’s Macroom, which imagines the dangerous and dramatic final hours of General Michael Collins before the ambush at Béal na Bláth. Through your support we continue to be able to offer opportunities to local theatre artists to show their excellent work on the Everyman stage. It is with particular pleasure that we welcome some old

friends this season. Former Artistic Director of the Everyman, Geoff Gould and his West Cork-based company Blood In The Alley bring us an explosive new production of Martin McDonagh’s completely hilarious play The Lonesome West featuring some of Cork’s finest performers. Speaking of Cork’s finest, early September will see Michael Twomey starring in the Everyman Theatre Company production of The Outgoing Tide by American playwright Bruce Graham. No Everyman season would be complete without a sprinkling of music, comedy and a little something for small people and their grown-ups too. Music fans should keep an eye out for Finbar Furey in June, and a return visit from Cork’s own soul diva Karen Underwood with her spellbinding show The Nina in Me, accompanied by maestro John O’Brien. Grown-ups who love bubbles can use their small people as an excuse to see the best clown show with bubbles: Overture – a magical madcap Italian bubble concerto…. Did we tell you already that there’s bubbles? International best-selling author and satirist David Sedaris joins us for one night only at the end of May, and for those of you who rather your music and comedy slightly more YURT flavoured, well then the obvious choice for you this season is the ever-brilliant Rubberbandits. As always, we’re offering the best of touring theatre, including the wacky and wonderful onewoman show Charolais (yes, as in cattle), a visit

from perennial favourites Tom Crean - Antarctic Explorer and Donal O’Kelly’s Catalpa as well as a new show from veteran entertainer Des Keogh, who is celebrating his 80th birthday by hitting the road with My Fair Ladies in which he plays the great George Bernard Shaw. And finally, we’re very pleased to tell you that our beloved old bar will be getting a much needed makeover in the coming months. We look forward to welcoming you to enjoy a refreshed and even more comfortable space for you to meet friends and catch up over a drink before, during and after the show. Do keep an eye out for a programme of special events coming soon to the bar too. All aboard!

Des Keogh as George Bernard Shaw in

My Fair Ladies Celebrating this, his 80th year, one of Ireland’s most renowned actors and performers, Des Keogh, gets to fulfil a life-long ambition to play legendary Irish man of letters George Bernard Shaw. Following the phenomenal success of The LoveHungry Farmer by John B. Keane, and hot on the heels of his appearance in the acclaimed revival of Moll at the Gaiety Theatre, Des will now perform in this hugely entertaining new play, which he also devised, about the many ladies in the extraordinary life of one of the greatest playwrights of all time. George Bernard Shaw was the author of Pygmalion, which became the universally acclaimed film My Fair Lady. Other titles include Arms and the Man, St Joan, Heartbreak House, Major Barbara and countless others. He was also a hugely controversial essayist and commentator. Shaw not only shared anecdotes about the loves of his life, but also his forthright views on sex, marriage and celibacy.

DRAMA The Everyman presents

Can love overcome all? Or are there always Winners and Losers? By turns comic and bittersweet, Brian Friel’s Lovers is a play in two parts – he introduces us in the first part to his winners, 17 year old Joe and Mag, and in the second part to his losers, Andy and Hanna, whose love bloomed much later in life. This play was written in 1967, in an Ireland whose identity was beginning to change, and yet was still firmly in the grip of the Catholic Church. Despite the long shadow of repression cast over these lovers, Friel breathes humour and humanity in to them. This play is full of heart and has much to say to us about the nature of love, and the nature of being Irish, even 50 years on.

I think sometimes that happiness, real happiness, was never discovered until we discovered it. Isn’t that silly? And I want to share it with everyone – everywhere

This production marks the directorial debut of Artistic Director Julie Kelleher on the Everyman stage. She will lead a team of Cork’s finest actors and theatre creatives in the staging of what is unarguably a great classic from one of Ireland’s finest living playwrights.

MACROOM PATRICK TALBOT PRODUCTIONS AND THE EVERYMAN PRESENT

MICHAEL COLLINS | 22 AUGUST 1922 | WHEN HOPE AND HISTORY DID NOT RHYME

BY IAN PATTISON 22 August, 1922. Michael Collins, Commander in Chief of the Irish Free State forces, is bruised, battered but emboldened by military success across Ireland. In Macroom on that day he meets with an emissary from the Republican side, their aim to find common ground to bring an end to the Civil War. Later that day Collins will be killed in a fire-fight at Béal Na Bláth by an unknown assailant and John ‘Jock’ McPeak, the machine gunner in his convoy, will soon afterwards go on the run.

Found and extradited by the Scottish judiciary, McPeak is brought back to Cork to be interrogated by Dave Neligan, the fearsome Director of Intelligence for the Irish Free State, and he delivers his account of that fateful day. In this compelling new play, Ian Pattison, creator and writer of the legendary BBC series Rab C. Nesbitt, speculates on a day which changed the course of Irish history.

Only Father Walsh is prepared to reconcile the two before their squabbling leads to violent and bloody carnage. Almost John B. DRAMA Everyman Theatre Company, in association with The Everyman, presents

The Outgoing Tide BY BRUCE GRAHAM An engrossing and powerful drama about a typical American family. Written with a light touch and with many flashes of humour, The Outgoing Tide tells how a father and mother are enjoying retirement at their holiday home by Chesapeake Bay, and what unfolds when they are visited by their businessman son. His visit prompts an announcement by his father about an unorthodox plan he has hatched to secure the family’s future, but meets with resistance from his wife and son, who have plans of their own. As winter approaches, the three must quickly come to an understanding about his shocking proposition – before the tides goes out. This play will bring sensitive observation and minor-key humour to painful situations that many of us will recognize from our own families and its poignant conclusion will have resonance for many of us.
