In each of this competitions there was a singles class and a brace (doubles) class trial. Fifty singles runs and two brace runs took place each day. The top five dogs from each day were selected to form the team that goes forward to the International Trial in September. The reserve singles competitor was the highest pointed of the three sixth placed competitors.

2012 Welsh National Sheepdog Trials

2012 Welsh N Sheepdog Tri 19th - 21st July The 2012 Welsh National Sheepdog Trials was held in Henfron, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys SY15 6LF. On thursday , the first day of the competition , 48 Singles handlers and the first Brace pair competing for the honour of representing Wales at the International trials in September. On the 1st day Nigel Watkins had a very nice run, but he had problems in the single. A good run was also the Harcourt's Lloyd , he completed within the time. On this day Jeff Hudd was fantastic , Aled Owen and Gypsy were magnificent, and indeed Aled and Gypsy were the leaders of the day with on 195 and goes forward to Saturday's runoff. Right hand outrun, good fetch, all the gates, good cross drive, shed pretty quickly, very good pen. The sheep have worked well overall, some packets were tricky at the pen.The winner on the 1st day was Aled Owen with Gypsy. On Friday , the 2nd day of the competition, 50 Singles handlers and two more Brace pairs were on the field , including J R Griffith, who has won more Brace titles than anyone else. Glyn Jones with Don & Zac (199pts) had a very nice brace run. The many times and 2011 Welsh National Brace Champion J R Griffith with Fan & Roy (134pts) ran out of time... The sheep for the Brace were Suffolks - and they were not easy at the open pen, as much as anything because of their sie! Kevin Evans was hacing a good run with Greg, but a ewe broke at the pen, and they ran out of time trying to complete the pen. Angie Driscoll was the Friday’s leader on 181.

After two days of superb trailling on the last day we have seen working with the sheep the remaining 50 competitors in the field . Nigel Watkins and Jody have posted a 182, R Ellis 188 , R Lewis 178 and a fantastic Arthur Roberts and Chip on 197. Gerald Lewis fall into second place with Flash, and Alun Jones (Selatyn) into third place with Kate. In the brace, there was just one run. Ian Jones sent Jess on right hand outrun, before Tom on the left. Jess got to the top first and the sheep moved off to the left but they pushed them back online. They got the fetch and had good turn. Nice line to first drive and kept them moving on the cross drive, but had a bit of a wide turn.Tom took a good shed and open pen. At the gated pen Jess was a bit pushy and they slipped past but did pen in time to complete the course. Ian Jones became the 2012 Brace champion, scoring 226. informations : Lisa Soar

Arthur Roberts & Chip 197 (1st, Sat; Runoff 196; WELSH NATIONAL CHAMPION 2012 ) Arthur is the winner of the National Welsh trials 2012 and now the Captain of the Wales team for the International Supreme Championships . He is a HILL farmer who returned to sheep trialling after a 30-year break is coming to terms with winning the Welsh National. With his dog Chip, the Pentrefoelas lamb producer registered the highest score over the three days of competition – and then confirmed his superiority in the final three-way run-off.Arthur was a regular competitor at the Welsh Nationals before his hobby gave way to work and family commitments. He was also a noted judge, but it was only when his 22-year-old son, Eilir, took an interest in the sport three years ago that the old competitive fires were rekindled. Having brought Chip from Mr Griffith as a 13month-old youngster, he began schooling the dog – for him, the best part of the trialling process. Arthur had the experience and Chip had the potential ...We will see in Cardiff.

Kevin Evans & Greg 164 olf 93 (3rd, Fri) Kevin Evans has been described as one of the most talented young handlers of his generation. His ever growing list of credentials lends credence to this. He's an eight time member of the Welsh Team for the International. He's made it to the Supreme Championship five times, winning the event in 2008 with Mirk. He qualified two dogs for the final of the 2008 World Trial with Mirk and Spot. Not to end there, he's also won the Welsh Brace Championship twice (the first time when he was just 18 years old) and he's been the Reserve International Brace Champion. In 1994, at just 13 years of age, he won One Man and His Dog “Young Handler“ competition with Maid , his first trial dog given to him by Mostyn Isaacs when he was 10. Angie Driscoll interview with Angie Driscoll

“The 2012 Welsh National has been, to date, the highlight of Meg and my short trialling career” This year with Meg you won the Day 2 of the Welsh National and competed in the Championship Final finishing second. Meg is an amazing dog from the same beginning...Which are Meg's best quality? Meg is an incredible listener and has a lovely balance between being obedient to command, and being natural. I like a dog that takes commands instantly, the first time you ask but who can also work independently. Meg is quite a quick bitch with endless energy and a ‘never quit’ attitude. When we are out working, she never gives in or gives up. I love dogs with big engines, big hearts and plenty of brains. I love them more if they want to work with me as a team. Meg has all of these things....plus, she has that ‘X factor’ which I can’t put my finger on. But she can also be just as naughty as my other dogs...barking when 4pm rolls around and she thinks it’s time for dinner. After many sheepdog trials ...what are your most memorable memories on a trial field? This is only my 5th year trialling so the memories are quite fresh. The 2012 Welsh National has been, to date, the highlight of Meg and my short trialling career. Meg’s run in qualifying and in the final were simply magnificent and a bit surprising. You see, earlier in the season Meg ruptured a ligament in her shoulder. She had been lame on and off during the season and when we finally got to see a specialist, the rupture was diagnosed. It was a gut wrenching moment but I never gave up hope we would make it to the national and with careful physiotherapy, Meg showed me at the National just how much heart and courage she has because we certainly hadn’t been able to get much training in.

What do you think about this year International trials...Who do you think are in the best shape to do better than the others...which dogs are on the top at the moment? I haven’t been in trialling very long but long enough to know that the form book doesn’t always throw out a certain winner. There is a lot of luck involved in trialling, and anyone can win on any given day. Trialling is not like other sports like running for example. With running, what you put into it is what you get out of it. In trialling you are dealing with unpredictable sheep, dogs that can have good days and off days, and us humans having to make many split second decisions. So many things have to go right and lady luck needs to be on your side. I don’t think I can predict who will bubble to the top this year! Of course I hope a lady handler will make the final this year! Chloe Cropper would have to be favoured in that respect.

Penny

“In trialling you are dealing with unpredictable sheep, dogs that can have good days and off days...” What do you expect from the 2012 International Supreme trial? This is my first time on the Welsh team for the International. For me, it’s going to be a learning curve. One cannot go to a shop and buy ‘experience’ so this is my chance to gain experience at this level of competition. I don’t know how I am going to react to the size of the crowd and competing in front of so many people. I’m usually quite relaxed about competing but you never know until you are in that situation. Of course, I am going to be one of the most inexperienced persons in the competition. I hope I don’t embarrass myself totally! Looking at the event as a whole, I hope, in an Olympic year, people will embrace the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship, both on and off the field.

interview with Angie Driscoll

How do you prepare yourself and your dog before entering a trial? There are no shortcuts when it comes to trialling so we practice and practice and practice. Some of this practice is in work situations, some of it trial training, and a lot is fitness work. I do a lot of thinking about the skills my dogs and I need to be successful at our daily work, and on the trial field....and then try to put this thinking into practice. Sometimes it works! It's all a bit of trial and error for me at the moment as this is all new to me. I look at trialling as being a practical test and so when I am preparing, I try to put into the dog, and myself, all the skills needed to get my work on the farm done. You are a very successful breeder of Working Sheepdogs . With Kelvin Broad you own the Kinloch Sheepdogs . Who started this adventure? Hmmm...well, we actually don't do very much breeding at all and generally only when we are looking for our next generation of dogs. In 2005 we were living in Canada and I was running my own business; a very busy marketing consulting company. I travelled three weeks out of four and spent more time in hotel rooms than I did in my own home. I came home from one particularly gruelling business trip and announced to Kelvin, “I need a hobby.” He asked me what kind of a hobby. I thought long and hard about it, and in the back of my mind, I always wanted to try training a sheepdog. Goodness only knows where that interest came from because I grew up in a city (in New Zealand). My New Zealand grandparents owned farms, and I often spent time with them, but there we no ‘true’ farmers in my New Zealand or British families (I am British born), and no one particularly interested in dogs. Not long after this, I hatched a plan to take a holiday in the UK and came home with not one, but two, border collies – one for me and one for Kelvin. Little did I know then just how much border collies would change our lives.

Penny

Bailey

Keeper

Arriving home from holiday with two budding sheepdogs presented a few problems. We lived on the edge of a city on 1.5 acres of land with a house right in the centre of this land. Not exactly an ideal place to train a sheepdog. We had no sheep. And , we knew nothing about training a sheepdog. We were undaunted! If there is one thing you should know about us is that if we don’t know how to do something, we try to work it out! And that is precisely what we started to do. Not enough land? We bought a 160 acre farm. No sheep? We bought some. No idea where to start training a sheepdog? We got out in the field with sheep and TRIED! That was pretty much where we started. Not long after I bought my first dog, I just had to have another one. One cannot just have one border collie! This second dog was Meg. She was 8 weeks old when I got her and right from the start, I had a feeling she was something special. I can’t put my finger on exactly why I thought that, afterall I knew almost nothing about dogs, let alone sheepdogs, but it was just a gut feeling I had. Before Meg was a year old, Kelvin and I decided it was time to move from Canada to the UK. We were two ‘newbies’ who knew absolutely nothing about sheepdogs, training, trialling, or anything dog related...and here we were in the UK to “go trialling.” It even sounds silly as I write this. What on earth were we thinking? But is certainly has been an adventure, that's for sure!

“I think the motivation to better my work comes from the older generations of shepherds!” Viewing the new generation of Shepherds growing up gives you motivation to be better and better in your work? I think the motivation to better my work comes from the older generations of shepherds! What are the strengths of your dogs? Every one of my dogs (I have three – Meg, Sioux and Penny) is different but there are a few things they all share: An enthusiasm to work, a willingness to work with me, a fantastic temperament, superb listening skills, natural athleticism, and great heart and courage. I couldn’t ask for more from them.

interview with Angie Driscoll

Kevin Evans & Angie

Bee

Kinloch is also a Publishing company , where you have published 2 superb books The World Of Sheepdogs and Zenspirations ...From where this idea? The World of Sheepdogs grew out of my frustration at not being able to find a nice coffee table type of book of beautiful working sheepdogs. I had just finished doing the Souvenir Programme for the 2008 World Trial and had learnt a new piece of desktop publishing software, and decided I could ‘have a go’ at making my own book. I was planning on printing a couple of copies for myself and a couple of friends, and when some local trialling people saw an early draft of the book, some of them ordered a copy. One person suggested I put it on my website, and within a week I had 250 copies preordered! Kelvin and I couldn’t believe it. Before we went to print, we had over 500 copies preordered and paid for. So a little book for myself became something bigger than we ever imagined. There was never any big plan for the book; just a desire to have my own coffee table book of photos. My friends still joke that I haven’t even got a coffee table...but I’m working on that! Zenspirations came from my interest in quotable quotes. I read a lot and find inspiration in the motivational words of others. So I put together this little book as a reminder of some motivational sayings that I think about when training and competing with my dogs and life in general. It helps keep things in perspective.

You are very active in a lot of different things from webmastering to trialling , photography .... What's an ordinary day like for you? There is no such thing as an ordinary day around here! Every day I spend hours with my dogs...walking, running, working, playing, training, feeding, cleaning – all the usual things. My day starts and ends with dog chores. But inbetween there is farmwork to be done, sheep to look after, fences to mend, lawns to mow, gardening, guests to look after, a lesson here and there, and then ‘indoor’ work (website maintenance, design work etc), usually done in the evenings after dog dinner time. I work hard...so I don’t feel so guilty when I go trialling on the weekends! What are your strengths and weaknesses? The weaknesses are too many to list. I’m human! But...I’m a perfectionist! That’s a strength and a weakness. 3 things that you can’t live without Dogs, Kelvin and chocolate, not necessarily in that order! (Kelvin would say I can’t live without dogs, dogs and dogs).

Last year with Mac you brought home a very good 4th place at the Welsh National trial. Mac was amazing .What is Fynydd Mac's best quality? Mac has a very good shed, he will come in quick, with the smallest gap and can hold sheep apart. In the 2011 you also won the SouthWales Championship with Arnie . Which is the best memories that comes to your mind remembering the 2011 trials? At the end of August 2011 L’minster Arnold won 3 trials in a row, begining in with Llanafan fawr, a very difficult trial with a long outrun on the hill and then followed this up by winning the South Wales Open against top compeditors. You are a very succesfull breeder of Working Sheepdogs ,the owner of the Fynydd Sheepdogs wIth the collaboration of Karin Haker...What are the strengths of your dogs? The ability to work with you, to listen well, balance on sheep, enough power without being hardwork, natural outruns.

“Th an do

Also in the past you had a lot of fantastic dogs like Dolwen Mac, Peg, Fynydd Bonnie, Fynydd Dawn and Karin's StrĂśmsfors Sky. Can you match one of the most beautiful memories to each of these dogs? Dolwen Mac learning to work at 6 month old at 300 ewes and gathering them on a 50 acre field, winning my first trial with him. Peg, picking her up as a pup off Bill Humphries, the way Peg loved her pups and the way she wanted to work even when she she was fit to drop. Fynydd Bonnie, always trying to help me, always by my side. Winning the Welsh Open in 2000 and the Welsh National in 2006. Fynydd Dawn, at 3 month old walking a ewe and lamb across the yard, then running to me wagging het tail. Sky, gathering cattle on a footballfield in the dark, in the middle of the night, and winning his first trial ( Karin says ).

The best part of a trial is getting out there and you nd your dog are on form, really showing what your og can do

interview with Paul Tomkins What do you think about this year International trials...Who do you think are in the best shape to do better than the others...which dogs are on the top at the moment? I don’t know much about this years international course, but if it’s run as good as the 2007 National and the weather is kind it will be great ! It will be interesting to se Gordon Watt and Lad, he is by L'minster Arnold and out of Fynydd Fly ( Fynydd Dawn-Bwlch Hjalmar ). How do you prepare yourself and your dog before entering a trial? I try to keep my dogs fit, and they have regular training to keep them on track ,whatever there age. Which is the best and worst part of a trial? The best part of a trial is getting out there and you and your dog are on form, really showing what your dog can do. worst part is getting a packet of sheep that you really can’t do nothing with, you and the dog can work hard but you get nowhere. What’s an ordinary day like for you? get up, work, training dogs ! What do you expect from the 2012 International Supreme trial? A top class trial ! Fynydd Mac

L'minster Arnold

After many sheepdog trials ...what are your most memorable memories on a trial field? Fynydd Bonnie winning 2000 Welsh Open and 2006 Welsh National. What are your strengths and weaknesses? The English National Sheepdog Trials was held on Swine Cragg Allotment, Kirkby Lonsdale Road, Over Kellet, Carnforth, Lancashire, LA6 1DY

After the 1st day of trialling 50 handlers where on the field , the best competitor was Mark Elliott with Tip . In the brace competition Jim Copper with BLACK & CALDERDALE TESS leaded with 196. Chloe Cropper has had a good run, slipping one inside on the away drive, but one of the best pens of the day, keeping the sheep in the mouth of the pen until they went in. Jim Cropper has had a hard time at the open pen with Black. The other packet drifted off a long way back up the field. Time up before he was able to complete. The open pen is proving very tricky for the brace and not one competitor has managed it on the first day. The second day winner at the 2012 English National Sheepdog Trials in Lancashire was Ben Smith , followed by Dick Roper and Paul Turnbull . Michael Longton and Rainoe Todd timed up in the single on 164, equalling Paul Turnbull's score with Dot. Thomas Longton equalling Jim Cropper's score from yesterday. OLF scores confirm that Jim Cropper is still ahead in the brace competition (olf 128 as against 116); Paul Turnbull was also just ahead, olf 85 as opposed to Michael Longton's 82. Ricky Hutchinson is replaced by Bob Harland with Shep and Lyn . The third day was for the final 50 singles and three doubles runs to decide who will fill the last five places in the team. At the end of trialling, the three sixth placed competitors, one from each day, had a runoff to decide who will be the team reserve, and then to finish the day in grand style, the winners of each day's trial had a runoff to decide who is the 2012 English National Champion . With Jim Cropper just ahead on olf of Thomas Longton both on 196, the brace competition is interestingly poised. Katy Cropper , last to run , became the 2012 English National Brace Champion, ahead of Jim Cropper on 196, who will be the second brace team member. Ben Smith took home the English Champion title (lost 20 on olf, 2 on fetch, 1 on drive); Mark Elliott 2nd (lost 36, 3, 4); Eamonn Lawless 3rd (lost 38, 3, 5). Reserve place goes to Gordon Watt. Chloe Cropper & Roy Chloe is One of the rising stars of the Cropper family , that is well-known in the sheepdog trialling world. Chloe was 12 when she visited Uncle Jim and Aunty Shirley’s farm ( Jim and Shirley Cropper) and realised she wanted to work with dogs, particularly Border Collies. At 16 years old she is fast making a name for herself in the world of sheepdog trialling. She won the trials on her uncle Jim Cropper’s farm, above Bacup, and her notable success has earned her a place on TV’s One Man and His Dog. The 19 years old girl was also present at the World Sheep dog Trials last year but she had problems with “concentration“ , she still has a long road ahead and we will hear a lot more about her in future...

Michael Longton & Rainow Todd Michael Longton has been trialling since the age of 12. In 1995 he ran at One Man and His Dog where they had a good run, missing out on winning for missing a few sheep at the drive away. The following year they took part in the International Young Handlers competition where they were runners up. He was trained by Timothy and given to Michael as thanks for running the farm while he was out of action recovering from his hip operation. He went on to win the 2004 English National trials at Piddinghoe beating the nearest competitor by 13 points. He's skills are growing very well in the 2009 at the International Supreme trials he finished 4th with Monty and 8th with Don and this year he became the English Brace Champion with Rainow Todd and Don .

interview with Timothy Longton

Timothy

Long

Last year you were present at the English National trial with Bob and you brought home a superb second place. What is Bob's best quality? Bob is very natural in his work with sheep Which is the first memory that comes to your mind remembering the 2011 National Trial? The well presented sheep that were a joy to work What do you expect from the 2012 International Supreme trial? I never expect anything if things go well I will be happy if not then it is not life or death. You are present on sheepdog trials for many years .What is the feeling for you “competing” against the new generation like Emma Gray and the old like Chris Todd? We need to keep new faces coming forward all the time or the trials will die, the good thing is that any age can compete at the top level

“I have always been competing with myself to do the best I can”

gton

Viewing the new generation of Shepherds growing up gives you motivation to be better and better in your work? I don’t think that it is the next generation that gives me motivation I have always been competing with myself to do the best I can

interview with Timothy Longton

“I am too critical of my own achievements, this may be weakness or strength” You are a Shepherd and also a respected judge.. What do you think :What is the best thing about the trials? I think that the friendships I have made with others interested in furthering the work of the shepherds and their dogs

You and Michael have to deal with 550 Swaledale sheep , 80 suckler cattle and the sheepdogs every day , which is the most beautiful part of the day for you? That depends on the time of year and the weather, a nice early morning in April when we are lambing and everything is going to plan is good

You are also a breeder and owner of fantastic dogs at the Rooten Brook Farm , the Rooten Brook Sheepdogs . I think that everyone of them has given you some great satisfaction.. Can you enclose in a few words the main characteristics of your beautiful dogs? I think what we are aiming for is a dog with natural ability that can work on its own without constant command What are your strengths and weaknesses? I am too critical of my own achievements, this may be weakness or strength 3 things that you can't live without Dogs, sheep and family

interview with Michael Longton

Michael L

Basically you are a shepherd from the beginning of your days , you started your trailling carrer with  Gyp and then Moss . What are the most beautiful memories of the time spent with gyp and Moss. Which will come to your mind for first? When I got Gyp I was 10 years old and loved taking her for walks, I taught her to lie down on command and just spent time with her, my Granddad started her then I got her back to run in nurseries where we did quite well, only my nerves got the better of me with one occasion that particularly springs to mind, I had only run her once or twice and both times on a right handed outrun, I went to a trial and sent her left but she was slowing on the outrun so I gave her the command to keep her going but she stopped and waited, I whistles and shouted her command for what seemed like an eternity then she listened and went..... I'd been giving her the wrong command so she did as I told her and crossed the outrun!

Longton

Last year with RAINOW TODD & DONÂ you took home the title of Brace Champions at the English National. What is the moment that comes to your mind first thinking of this event? The first thing I think of is my struggle to hold Todd at the first pen while I tried to pen the second lot with Don! He was wanting to help but with having to force him to stop still Don thought I was telling him off so he needed encouraging and so they both moved again, it happened 5 or 6 times but came off eventually! Bring the name of your family at sheepdog trials make you nervous or gives you more determination and you feel at ease? Having the Longton name used to put pressure on me and make me nervous but then once I had finally managed to finish at a National that gave me the most confidence of anything, then once I had managed to do that I always felt I could get finished every year which means a lot of points I can gain.

interview with Michael Longton

After many sheepdog trials ...what are your most memorable memories on a trial field? My best memories are of the two times I have got to the Supreme, gaining 3rd with Moss in 2005, then in 2009 getting his two sons (Monty and Don) into the Supreme, and also managing to win the National the first time I got into the team with Monty in 2004 You and your father have to deal with 550 Swaledale sheep , 80 suckler cattle and the sheepdogs every day ,which is the most beautiful part of the day for you? The end of the day when most of the work is done so I can take the dogs out! Who was your role model as a child? In the dog world my Granddad and mostly my Father, the advice my Father has given me over the years has been invaluable and is the main reason I have managed to do what I have in my trialling career so far. What are your strengths and weaknesses? I like to think my strengths are shedding and singling, mainly from the ability to read sheep a bit, I also love the pressure of running my dog in important moments like the National and beyond What are your goals and aspirations for the next years? To continue bringing out good dogs to the National and hopefully the International (if they are good enough!)

2012 Scottih National Sheepdog Trials

2012 Scottish Sheepdog Tr 16th-18th August

The 2012 Scottish National Sheepdog Trials was held at Kypehill Farm near Strathaven in Lanarkshire ML10 6PN This event was also the 4th and final quality round for the International Supreme trials that will be held in September. On the first day the crowd have watched a top class run from John Templeton that puts him in the lead, a very good Davie Wallace has moved into second place after a good run with Rob .Towards the end of the runs John MacKillop became the new leader and MIchael Shearer on 182Â joins the top 10. At the end Ian Brownllie and Gus have taken the lead .

h National rials On the second day Tony Welsh scored 191 and in the brace runs Julie Hill with Mac and Ban: Mac went out to the left and arrived a little before Ban. The lift was well balanced and the fetch well controlled, with good lines. The driving was equally good, with a slightly slow start to the cross drive and good lines. The sheep were incllined to be cheeky at the open pen, and Mac split the sheep before oenning them at the gated pen. Jimmy Menies was the second brace handler for the second day. The dogs stopped a little short, then crossed at the top, and the lift was a little uneven. The dogs were well balanced on the cross drive, and worked quietly on the close work, but the sheep split around the pen. Neil McEachern and Chloe had a good outrun (to the left) and lift. At the end for the day 2 high scoring runs were made from Fraser Shennan and Bobby Dalziel brought them each a place on the leader board . On the third and last day a lot of good runs were made.... Kevin Howlett (good right hand outrun, probably the best lift so far) , Boyd Mundell (good outrun to the right), Ewen Mackinnon and Nan(Right hand outrun ) ,Archie Aitchison ,Neil McVicar and Norman MacDonald . At the end the winner of the 2012 Scottish National Sheepdog Trial was Ian Brownlie with Boredale Gus . Neil McEachern & Chloe finished second and Bobby Dalziel with Joe third. Julie Hill with MAC & BAN won the 2012 Scottish National Brace title. Informations : Fiona McMillan
