S

ince it is Valentine’s Day today, I thought I’d write about “Why We LOVE our Dogs So Much”. I realize that this answer may vary from person to person, but in my dog training experience I have seen examples of enormous love from all ages, economic levels, and people in all stages of life.

BY MARLENE RING - PAWSITIVE SOLUTIONS.

I believe that our dogs are always there for us. They are home waiting for us to arrive. They always have time for us…always! Whatever activity we are interested, they are interested too. Whether it is a bike ride or hanging out with an owner that has the flu, your dog is up for the adventure. They are enthusiastic, giving and loving. They are dependent on us their entire lives. We must feed and take care of our dog, this builds a massive bond. Recently I had a client say: “Her dog was the longest and best relationship she had during her adult life.” I have had clients that grieved more for their dog than they did for a husband, brother or human child. Couples that don’t vacation together ever, as someone must stay home with the dog. As for my own personal experience, I have had dogs that I have loved with all my heart and soul and everything that I am. Much stronger relationships than I have ever had with a human. 10

Maybe that’s why I became a dog trainer. It’s a great fit. A new study published in the Journal of Science reveals one reason why we feel so close to our furry companions: When humans and dogs look into each other’s eyes, both get a boost of the feel-good hormone oxytocin, which is the same hormone behind the special bond between new parents and their babies. Does everyone “LOVE’ their dogs with this gusto? Of course, not! It doesn’t matter. Just be happy that you are one of the Lucky ones with the vast ability to bond. Marlene Ring is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). Her Dog Training business is PAWSitive Solutions.

hen walking through the doors of the VCA Castle Hills Companion Animal Hospital, one is immediately greeted by a member of the warm and friendly front desk team. Displayed proudly for all to see in the clinic’s lobby are the words “Your pet’s health is our top priority, and excellent service is our goal.” It is this mission statement, along with a passion for keeping tails wagging, that drives the VCA Castle Hills team to make each and every encounter that their clients and patients have with their hospital truly exceptional.

BY PAULA DILWORTH MCFARLAND

VCA Castle Hills Companion Animal Hospital, located at 13141 N.W Military Highway in San Antonio, Texas, is part of a family of over 1,000 veterinary hospitals across the United States and Canada. Within these hospitals is a network of more than 6,000 veterinarians and over 600 board-certified veterinary specialists all dedicated to the goal of providing their patients with outstanding healthcare. VCA believes strongly that one of the best ways to keep pets happy and healthy is to place an emphasis on wellness and preventive care. With that in mind, VCA has developed their VCA CareClub programs, which focus on providing pets with the comprehensive preventive and wellness care they need. As an added benefit, the cost of all services included in each CareClub plan are offered at a discounted rate, and is broken up into easy-to-manage, predictable monthly payments. Each CareClub program is tailored to a pet’s species and

lifestage. Each plan includes things like unlimited exams, doctorrecommended vaccinations and early disease detection and diagnostic wellness testing to help veterinarians build a complete, unique health profile for that pet. Just as in human medicine, establishing a baseline wellness profile is essential to helping a pet’s healthcare team detect any health concerns or signs of disease in their earliest stages which can lead to more effective treatment. In addition to the basic CareClub plans, an extended range of services is offered through the PawsPlus plans, which include spaying and neutering services for puppies and kittens, and professional teeth cleaning services for adult and senior pets. To help make the most out of a CareClub membership, one should download the MyVCA app – which is available for free both through the Apple App Store and GooglePlay. The MyVCA app puts an array of tools for managing your pet’s

healthcare in the palm of your hand! Through the app, one can easily access their pet’s medical records, receive healthcare reminders, schedule wellness appointments, set medication reminders, order food, medications and pet supplies and browse a library of pet-parent articles with advice and tips from a vet-trusted source! In addition to all of these services, CareClub.members are also able to manage their CareClub membership and receive access to 24/7 live chat with an on-call VCA veterinarian through the app. VCA Animal Hospitals is committed to developing innovative ways to help make providing and managing exceptional veterinary healthcare easier than ever before – all while keeping their mission statement at the heart of every encounter. T

he concrete has been laid, but the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS)’s newest expansion project still has several months to go before completion. In the fall of 2019, the SAHS announced it had begun construction on a state-of-the-art medical building at its location on Fredericksburg Rd. The Leeu Naylor Medical Building is estimated to provide services for over 20,000 needy pets in our community, annually.

BY VERONICA PEREZ

Valuable additions include new surgical, orthopedic, and radiology suites, a rehabilitation room, and a medical clinic. With these additions, the SAHS will not only be able to bring in more diverse medical cases and help more sick and injured pets, but will also be able to double the annual number of spay/neuter surgeries it currently conducts. This valuable service is offered for free or at a low-cost to pet owners in San Antonio and our surrounding areas to fight the stray, roaming, and homeless pet overpopulation problem in our community. At this time, the SAHS has reached over 90 percent of its $10 million goal, but they are asking for the public’s help to raise the remaining funds needed for completion.

20

“Although we’re currently limited by a lack of space and resources,” says Chief of Community Engagement, Traci B. Gomez, “thanks to contributions by many generous supporters and organizations in our city, we are on our way to saving the lives of thousands more dogs and cats.” There are still multiple naming opportunities available for donors looking to leave their mark towards paw-sitive progress, but it’s always important to remember: every dollar counts. Those interested in following the organization’s progress or for those interested in learning how they can contribute to the campaign, visit SAhumane.org/Capital or email Traci B. Gomez, Chief of Community Engagement, at tbgomez@SAhumane.org.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

W

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. 16

I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

Q: My husband wants to take our dog to the dog park but I'm afraid that he may pick up the flu that is going around. Should I be concerned about keeping him away and is there a vaccine I can give him? –Vivienne A: Dog parks have become very popular in the last few years and they are a great place for dogs to play and socialize. Usually they are safe and many pet owners frequent them without incident. However, in the last few months my clinic has treated several upper respiratory cases and dog fight cases that have stemmed from dog park visits. While visiting a dog park, your pet’s exposure to other dogs can lead to kennel cough, mycoplasma pneumonia, parasites and gastrointestinal issues. So if you and your pet visit a dog park make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines and it’s a good idea to take your own water and water bowl. Also,

during your time at the dog park its best to keep an eye on your pet because a dog fight can occur in an instant. Q. My groomer told me that my dog's paws were splitting and she saw some blood. At what point would I need to bring him to the vet? –Brad A: It would be wise to have your veterinarian check your pet’s dry splitting paws. If everything checks out normal on exam, using a lanolin based ointment may be helpful. I like a Balm made by Buck Mountain for skin, noses and paws.

Your dog needs exercise! •

All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.

Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •

For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.

Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.

On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.

And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
