TIME TO NEUTER !

EVENTS

The neutering project in April was a success! Check out some of the photos:

It’s been a while since we last published an “events” article. It doesn’t mean we haven’t worked. We’re here everyday, fighting for improving the quality of life on the hundreds of dogs and cats that DOP supports, but also trying to change the Portuguese mentality and laws. Last month we had two major projects: our annual Neutering Project and the second phase of the Vaccination Project. The Neutering Project took place in April and was a success! In one week 47 animals were sterilized: 1 goat (male), 5 rabbits (4 females, 1 male), 7 cats (5 males, 2 females), 12 female dogs and 22 male dogs. We would like to thank everyone who contributed financially as well as our vets and volunteers. Without you we just couldn’t do it! If you have not contributed but you would like to, you still can! As we want to have 5-10 animals neutered every week, you can contribute anytime: just send us an email. Our costs are materials such as sutures, anesthetics and antibiotics. As for the Vaccination Project, we have just started. With over 500 dogs in the shelter vaccinating them is a priority - only then we can protect them against common and contagious diseases like Parvovirus and Distemper. Our objective is to have every dog in the shelter vaccinated. This is a big financial effort but we count on your support. Vaccinating one dog costs 10€, so please help anyway you can!

WE ARE ALWAYS IN NEED OF... Deworming tablets Spot-on against fleas and ticks such as Advantix and Frontline and also Advocate for dogs with skin allergies Scalibor collars Actidox and Becozyme for treatment of tick fever and Conofite and Oridermyl for treatment of ear infections Medication with Allopurinol as an active ingredient dogsofportugal@gmail.com

GRC | CANINE REHABILITATION GROUP FEEDING AND BEHAVIOUR In our last newsletter we talked about the criteria that should be taken into account when choosing food. But did you know that apart from nutritional aspects directly related to health, the choice of food can also influence the behaviour of your pet? It is obvious that good food favours communication and relation with your pet. On the contrary, bad food can cause less desirable behaviour and ultimately have bad influence on your relation with your pet. An equilibrated diet helps the pet to behave in a natural way and according to his instincts. For example if the dog is too fat, it has less willingness to move and he loses interest in what is happening around him. And if the dog is too skinny, he may not have enough energy and he becomes stressed when the effort is too much for him. Another thing that is worth drawing attention to is the time and frequency of feeding during the day. Dogs in particular need certain routines to maintain their mental balance, so we advise to feed them always at the same time. As to the frequency, most common is once or twice a day but it depends on the age, physical shape and health of the dog so you should also consult with your vet. Lifestyle of your dog should also be taken into consideration when it comes to time, frequency and quantity of the food: it depends on if the dog stays at home the whole day, or if it goes to dog school, or to a “day care centre” with other dogs, or stays in a kennel with other dogs, etc. The quantity of the food can even be varied between the meals. Generally, remember that the pet is more likely to rest after a meal. Experience taught us that it is good to adapt our routines to the routines of our pets, like this we live in synchrony and it is easy to share our daily occupations. For example we go for a walk with a dog in the morning before leaving home for good, we feed after a walk (some specialists underline that feeding after a walk strengthens the link between the owner and the dog). We give a new walk in the afternoon, when we come back home. Then we give the dog some time to rest and another meal.
