Boaters tie for first By John O’Neill Mountaineer Contributor

The probability of a first-place tie in the Steep Creek Championships for the Teva Mountain Games hosted on Homestake Creek near Red Cliff was unimaginable for Honza Lasko and Mike Dawson, but somehow they found a way to make it happen yesterday. “It’s the first tie in a kayak race I have ever been in,” said Dawson, who hails from Tauranga, New Zealand. “It’s good

Dawson, Lasko share victory in Steep Creek Championships to share the podium with him (Lasko), we’ve known each other a long time. I guess we were on the same wavelength.” Dawson had a commanding lead of nearly three seconds after qualifying and said he just was hoping to paddle a con-

sistent second run for the win. Lasko of Pardubice, Czech Republic, had a different plan in mind and dropped his fastest time of the day to tie Dawson in the final. Lasko was equally astounded that two paddlers could tie to the hundredth of a second in a combined-time,

two-lap format with a time of 3 minutes, 34.62 seconds. “My second run was so smooth, I’m so tired,” said Lasko after hiking his boat up from the river. “It’s so crazy. I’m so happy to tie.” The competition was run in a time trial format with qualifying and final run times being combined to decide the winner. Behind Lasko and Dawson was another Czech paddler, Jakub Nemec, in 3 minutes, 46.79 seconds. [See KAYAK, page 10]

E. coli ‘super-toxic’ strain

Scientists yesterday blamed Europe’s worst recorded food-poisoning outbreak on a “super-toxic” strain of E. coli bacteria that may be brand new. But while suspicion has fallen on raw tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce as the source of the germ, researchers have been unable to pinpoint the food responsible for the frightening illness, which has killed at least 18 people, sickened more than 1,600 and spread to least 10 European countries. By Phil Lindeman Mountaineer Staff Writer For the organizers of tomorrow’s cross-country mountain bike race on Vail Mountain, when life gave them snow, they made snow cones – miles and miles of snow cones. A crew of 15 ski patrollers has toiled for the last two weeks to clear five miles of singletrack and fire roads, battling mid-May dumps to prepare for one of the most sought-after events at the whole of Teva Mountain Games. “It didn’t stop snowing, that’s for sure, and we’re kind of forcing the issue,” Vail Ski Patrol director Julie Rust

I have the best crew in the world.” Sections of Born Free near Lionshead and Ruder’s Run above Golden Peak took two days of non-stop work with a Snowcat to clear. Portions of trail through aspen and evergreen stands required a more intimate approach, with 10-hour days of pure hand shoveling. “They’ve put in an incredible amount of work,” said Adam Lueck, the operations manager for the Vail Valley Foundation, which organizes TMG. “To put it succinctly, we are in

a lot better shape than anyone thought, even a few weeks ago.” Despite these laudable efforts, Lueck and the other course designers were forced to get creative and abandon the course from 2010 and 2009. He noted the upper section of Lion Down, which runs roughly a mile and holds some harrowing steeps, had to be nixed because of snow. Salmon planning new album Jamgrass legends to start recording in November By Matt Minich Mountaineer Editor

The men of Leftover Salmon will go back into the studio this November to record their first new studio album in seven years, mandolin player Drew Emmitt said in an interview yesterday. “I think it’s going to really kind of give use some new life,” Emmitt said. The band hasn’t yet written any of the songs for the new album, he said, but will start some time in the next week before their “River Run” shows at the Mishawaka and State Bridge Amphitheater next month. The jamgrass legends have been touring in Colorado since 1989, with a brief hiatus from 2004 to 2007. In that time, the band has presented itself in many forms, and more than a dozen members have cycled through it. Since the loss of banjo player Mark Emmitt to cancer in 2002, the band has used several players in an attempt to fill his shoes. The most recent addition is one Andy Thorne, whose style is reminiscent of the band’s “Bridges to Burt,” days, Emmitt said. “With Andy on the banjo it feels

a lot more like the original Salmon,” he said. Not even the band knows what sounds will come out of the writing process for the new album. Many of the members now tour with their own independent solo projects, and Emmitt said he has cooked up a few ideas while working with his own project, the Emmitt-Nershi Band. For now though, the album is without a track list or

even a name. “It’s an embryo,” he said with a laugh. A return to State Bridge Leftover Salmon will come to the State Bridge Amphitheater near Bond next Sunday, July 12. It will be the band’s first visit to the refurbished venue, which was rebuilt this year after burning to the ground [See SALMON, page 24]

Free fishing this weekend License not required statewide Saturday and Sunday In an attempt to encourage Coloradans to take up the sport, the Colorado Division of Wildlife will allow fishing without a license this weekend. Each year, the first weekend of June is set aside for such an occasion. “Free fishing weekend is a great opportunity for people to try out fishing if they haven’t yet, said Greg Gerlich, aquatic section manager for the Division of Wildlife. “It’s also a chance for those who used to fish Colorado’s outstanding waters to get back into the sport. While no fishing license is required during the first full weekend in June, all other regulations remain in effect. Teva games attract business Gear Town features product sampling, demos As the tenth annual Teva Mountain Games get underway, outdoor sports and athletes take center stage this weekend in Vail. Just like any Hollywood movie production you need to have the right tools and sets – amongst other things – to allow your stars to reach their greatest potential. This is where the many vendors scattered around Vail Village in the expo area of Gear Town come into play for the athletes and fans of the Teva Games. Gear Town is the Teva Mountain Games’ equivalent to a farmer’s market with one big exception: they’ve traded the fresh produce and random knick knacks for gear, swag, food, beer gardens and the largest collection of outdoor lifestyle brands to ever take Vail Village by storm. Located throughout Meadow Drive and the International Bridge areas, Gear Town offers product sampling, demos, contests and special “event pricing on lots of goods. With the growth of the Teva Games – from a grassroots whitewater event to the nation’s largest celebration of mountain sport, lifestyle and music – its also means the biggest convergence of outdoor affiliated gear for the active members of the valley to try out and get a first hand look at most of these companies new equipment. “We usually only release two new items a summer, said Garmin

lifestyle that combines the outdoors with fitness. “Being at these Games just really suits our company, McCarthy said. “This is the first day and already we can’t wait to come back next year. That sentiment of coming back is shared throughout the Gear Town vendors, as soon as these companies breathe in the fresh mountain air and get a glimpse of the beautiful bluebird sky that Vail has to [See GEAR, page 24]

Trail cleanup in Minturn this morning Early risers invited to restore Minturn Mile area All-natural granola, cereal and trail mix maker Bear Naked will do its part to preserve the valley’s trails today. Organizers of the event, called the Bear Naked Trail Day, hope to see local volunteers of all ages turn out to work in the name of outdoor recreation. Held in conjunction with the annual Teva Mountain Games, at the Bear Naked Trail Day volunteers will help members of the U.S. Forest Service with some much-needed trail maintenance on Game Creek Trail in Minturn. Known locally as the run-out from the “Minturn Mile,” the popular ski and snowboard run and mountain bike trail sees plenty of year-round traffic. Trail Day participants provide valuable help in working to minimize impact on the Game Creek Trail due to erosion, trail braiding and overuse. “The Bear Naked Trail Day is a perfect complement to the competition and festivities of the Teva Mountain Games,” explained Michael Imhof, vice president of sales and operations for the Vail Valley Foundation. Half marathon course altered Eagle Valley

Change forced by snowpack atop Vail Pass Vail’s record snow year brought joy to skiers and snowboarders all weekend, but now it’s causing some problems for organizers of the Teva Mountain Games. Too much snow near the top of the race course has forced the rerouting of the Vail Pass Half Marathon on Saturday, June 4. Instead of ending at the top of Vail Pass as planned, the course will now turn around at the cul de sac, with competitors running back to the East Vail campground that will now serve as the new finish line. The race distance will remain 13.1 miles, an official half marathon. “The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) worked for 48 hours straight, said Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, “in an all-out effort to plow to the top of the pass. At the end of the day, there is just too much snow, but we most certainly applaud them for all their efforts. The race is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Saturday from the Bear Naked Adventure Village in Golden Peak. Prize money will be paid to the top four men and women finishers. “If there is a silver lining in all of this, Imhof said, “it’s that the runners will get some downhill in this year’s race. Competitors should visit www.tevamountaingames. com for the new course map

KAYAK

–––––––––––---------------------------------------

The competition drew 42 men and eight women with only 37 men and seven women finishing the course with the challenge of descending Homestake Creek upright knocking many out of the competition. The creek drops 480 feet per mile with paddlers facing many different types of paddling obstacles. The upper section of the creek, known as the “mank, sends paddlers bouncing between rocks in shallow waters. After the mank comes four technical drops with the fourth, Leap of Faith, being the most challenging before paddling through the finish line. It was both the mank and Leap of Faith that caused the most problems for paddlers with many being turned upside down and having to exit their kayaks and swim to shore. Dawson described the creek as a challenging venue for the race saying, “It’s Homestake. You never know what you’re going to get.

A lady among men On the women’s side, the race for first wasn’t nearly as close as Adriene Levknecht of Asheville, North Carolina obliterated the competition by descending the creek twice with a combined time of 3 minutes, 55.65 seconds – 17 seconds ahead of second place finisher Nikki Kelly of Rotorua, New Zealand who finished in 4 minutes, 12.60 seconds. Third place went

to Martina Wegman in 4 minutes, 12.69 seconds. Last year Levknecht finished fourth in the same race and attributed her advance, strangely, to kayaking less frequently. She is a full time college student and is forced to balance her time between kayaking and studying. Obviously the books don’t slow her down – Levknecht’s time put her ahead of all the other women and would have placed her in the top 15 in the men’s race. “I was feeling good for sure, Levknecht said of going into her second run. “I was feeling better and better as the other girls were crashing out. I just had to keep it clean and keep a downstream motion. On the day, Levknecht said that she was, of course, happy with the result and that she enjoyed the race because of its difficulty. “It’s great. I’ve been to some amazing races and Homestake is like two minutes of scaring the crap out of yourself. Today At 1 p.m. today under the International Bridge in Vail those that raced the Steep Creek and others will exchange their adrenaline for the finesse of freestyle kayaking in the Vail white water park for the kayak freestyle qualifier.

Hick signs pot regs Moratorium on new shops extended By Kristen Wyatt Special to the Mountaineer Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law several changes to the nation’s most exhaustive medical marijuana regulations yesterday, even as governors in other medical marijuana states steer clear because of questions about whether federal authorities will permit states to violate federal drug law. Hickenlooper, a Democrat, signed the measure late in the afternoon without public notice or explanation. The new law extends by one year — until summer 2012 — a moratorium on new pot shops. The law also loosens residency requirements for people working in dispensaries and sets up a new caregiver registry in which small home-growers who raise pot for up to five patients will have to tell the state where their plants are kept. Colorado’s new pot law was signed hours after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder promised to clarify the Justice Department’s position on state medical marijuana laws. Federal attorneys in Colorado and other marijuana states have warned state authorities that they’re putting state employees at risk of federal drug prosecutions when they regulate marijuana, which is illegal under federal law. Late last week, Arizona authorities sued the Justice Department seeking clarification on state marijuana laws. And in April, Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire vetoed parts of a bill to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries after receiving the federal warning. Hickenlooper has not reacted to the warning he received in April, and a

spokesman for the governor had no immediate explanation for the reasons behind the bill signing. The law was included in a list of new laws sent without comment, and they were HICKENLOOPER signed without public notification. Hickenlooper also signed into law a bill setting labeling standards for edible cannabis products such as pot brownies. He also signed a ban on chemicals used to produce synthetic marijuana, often called Spice or K2. A marijuana activist who favors legalization blasted Hickenlooper for signing the marijuana regulations Thursday. Robert Chase, founder of the Colorado Coalition of Caregivers & Patients, said state lawmakers and the governor are foolish to think they’re allowed to regulate a federally banned substance. “It has become clear in hindsight that the Obama administration has never OK’d states being in violation of federal controlled substance law, said Chase, who favors federal change in the classification of marijuana. “It’s foolish to continue down this path. ... They’re just exposing all of us to federal criminal liability. The marijuana regulation bill also directs some $1 million in marijuana sales taxes to a drug and alcohol treatment program in Pueblo. The Circle Program at the Colorado Mental Health Institute was in danger of closure. The marijuana regulations signed yesterday take effect in July.

ing yesterday, giving cyclists just two days to feel out the changes. All told, it’s two miles shorter than the predicted seven miles, with a vertical climb of about 1,200 feet per lap. One thing is for certain: the course has the potential to be one of the quickest in TMG history. “I think it will be a faster track, said Lueck, who has managed the mountain bike race for six years. “We’ll see quick laps as a result of not getting as high as normal. To account for the shortened sections, Lueck said racers in the adult divisions will likely make an additional loop, pushing pros and experts up to four laps and amateurs to three.

group, and said he’s looking forward to a course with more flow and climb. “I actually enjoy this course over (last years), Henry said, noting he plans to get a trial run in today. “There are shorter climbs and a bit more distance between the ascending and descending portions, as opposed to one big climb and drop. The 36-year-old Henry remembers tackling almost the exact track in 2008, when he took silver. He clashes regularly with Jake Wells, 32, another marquee name on the local mountain biking circuit, and who fits into the category of uphill junkies. “Typically on Vail Mountain, there’s a lot of climbing no matter where you go, and I feel that’s where my strength is right now, said Wells, who placed sixteenth in 2010. “If I could get a top 10 at Teva Mountain Games, I’d be psyched. Riding styles aside, Henry and Wells feed off the energy of home field advantage – both racers have competed at TMG since its inception in 2001 – which becomes a

needed boost when vying for the largest cash purse of any event this weekend. The winner of the pro division stands to take home $3,000, and finishers up to sixth place won’t leave empty-handed. In the past few years, this hefty reward has attracted top-tier talent. When asked which rider poses the biggest threat tomorrow, Henry chuckled. “Quite honestly, I don’t even need to see a start list, Henry said. “For five or six years, this race has been one of the top national races, and it ends up attracting some of the deepest fields out there. Despite growing interest from across the country, riders from the Vail Valley, Boulder, and Denver hold a monopoly on the podium. Dating back to 2005, when the race was cancelled due to none other than snow, Colorado riders have won the pro division without fail. “I like to call this the ‘Colorado Olympics’ because you have a ton of incredible local riders, Wells said. “It’s nice to have this in your backyard.

Unabomber auction nets $190K Convict’s personal possessions sold to benefit victims By Paul Elias Special to the Mountaineer The very technology that the Unabomber railed against during his murderous spree was used yesterday to help some of his victims. An unusual online auction of Ted Kaczynski’s personal items that ended yesterday garnered about $190,000 for his victims and their family members. They want the socalled Unabomber to pay for the 16 explosions he set off that killed three and injured 23 others across the country. Kaczynski’s personal journals fetched $40,676; the iconic hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses depicted in police sketch artist renderings accounted for $20,025; and his handwritten “manifesto” sold for $20,053. Other popular items included $22,003 for the Smith Corona typewriter used to write manifestos sent to newspapers and later seized from the cabin and $17,780 for his autobiography. The manifesto laid out Kaczynski’s belief that modern technology was eroding human freedoms and that his bombings were necessary to spark a large-scale revolution. The pursuit of Kaczynski became one of the longest and costliest investigations in the FBI’s history. The auction was a culmination of a seven-year legal battle designed to block Kaczynski from regaining ownership of the property seized

from his remote Montana cabin during a 1996 raid. Kaczynski, representing himself in court, demanded return of the property so he could donate it to the University of Michigan, his alma mater. But because Kaczynski was ordered to pay his victims $15 million, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the property auctioned. John Hickey, a consignment director at Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, said that several types of collectors could be expected to compete for the items. “People who deal in historical events and lean toward the bad guys will be interested in this stuff,” said Hickey, whose company auctioned off a poem written by Lee Harvey Oswald and the infamous wooden gun John Dillinger used to break out of prison. Kaczynski “has also crossed over into pop culture and will attract those collectors.” Janine Vaccarello, chief operating officer at the National Museum of Crime & Punishment in Washington, D.C., was the winning bidder for the Unabomber’s black-andwhite passport photos, along with his hand bowed wood saw and Hanson Model 1509 scale that he used in his bomb-making. Total cost for all three items: $1,766. Vaccarello spent the day monitoring the bidding. “I didn’t bid on the manifesto,” she said. She was unsuccessful on

other items, among them two of Kaczynski’s typewriters, the price for which doubled in five minutes to $3,600. The museum in Washington, D.C., includes a crime lab, the filming studios for the show “America’s Most Wanted” and hundreds of interactives and artifacts. In all, collectors snatched up 58 items seized during the raid of Kaczynski’s remote Montana cabin in 1996. Those bidders remained anonymous. Some victims and others opposed the auction as unseemly. They feared the publicity surrounding the event would add to Kaczynski’s renown at a time when they want him to languish quietly in the so-called supermax federal prison in Florence, Colo. There was concern that some of the writings contained Kaczynski’s gloating over the bombings between 1978 and 1995. He was arrested after his brother tipped off authorities in 1996. FBI agents painstakingly censored all references to Kazcynzki’s victims in the 40,000 pages of documents and other items seized from the cabin and put up for sale. “This is really the best option,” said Jeffrey Dion, director of the National Center for Victims of Crime. “The proceeds go directly to the victims.” —This story appears courtesy The Associated Press

THE UPDATE Yemen slides toward all-out fight for power

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thousands of tribesmen threatened yesterday to descend on Yemen’s capital to join the battle against forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh as the country slid deeper into an all-out fight for power. Government forces in Sanaa unleashed some of the heaviest shelling yet against their tribal rivals in a dramatic escalation of the conflict. For months, youth-led protesters have tried to drive out Saleh peacefully. But their campaign has been overtaken and transformed into an armed showdown between Yemen’s two most powerful families, the president’s and the al-Ahmar clan. The al-Ahmar family heads the country’s strongest tribal confederation, which has vowed to topple Saleh Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad wave his poster as they demonafter 33 years in power. strate outside a hotel where the opponents of the Syrian regime gathered on Turkey’s Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya, for a conference aimed at overcoming their differences and bolstering protesters who have endured a bloody crackdown under Assad yesterday. Syria protesters see unrelenting attacks

Electricity, phone lines and then the water supply were cut off in a restive area of Syria that is a new center for protests against President Bashar Assad, and activists said 15 people died in the sixth day of sustained government attacks yesterday. Syria’s opposition, fragmented by years of sectarian and ideological tensions, made tentative steps to organize and show an international face, calling on Assad to step down to allow for free elections at the end of a two-day conference in Turkey.

Civilians dead in South Sudan battle

Southern Sudan soldiers attacking a rival ethnic group fired indiscriminately on unarmed men, women and children at a remote Nile River village, killing or wounding hundreds of civilians, according to witness accounts in a confidential U.N. report. A U.N. team that traveled to the village 11 days after the April 23 killings saw more than two dozen corpses and said grass-roofed mud huts clearly contained many more bodies, but the toll of 254 dead civilians from a local official has not been independently verified. The Texas-sized south voted in Janu-

ary to secede from Sudan and becomes independent in July. It has been strongly supported by the U.S. and other Western nations.

Japan’s PM beats censure, hints at resignation

Prime Minister Naoto Kan defeated a no-confidence motion yesterday over his handling of Japan’s triple disasters, but the victory may be short lived — he said he is willing to resign once the country’s recovery takes hold. Buying himself some time and warding off a challenge that threatened to

split his party and send Japan’s government into a deeper morass, Kan won by a margin of 293-152 in the 480-seat lower house of parliament. Kan, in office just one year, had been criticized for not responding swiftly enough to the crisis caused by the March 11 earthquake and massive tsunami that left more than 24,000 people dead or missing. The disaster — believed to be the costliest in history — has been a huge drain on Japan’s long-stagnant economy.

Goldman Sachs subpoenaed

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. was subpoenaed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office over the investment bank’s activities leading up to the financial crisis, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. Goldman has been watched by lawmakers and regulators since marketing risky investments that bet on the housing market’s success just before the mortgage meltdown. Simultaneously the bank reaped billions of dollars from its own bets that the housing market would collapse. Those gains have also made it the target of intense media scrutiny and public outrage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Moody’s Investors Service said yesterday that if the parties fail to make progress soon, it would put the U.S. rating under review for a possible downgrade. That’s because there’s a “very small but rising risk that the government will default on its debts. The U.S. government hit its $14.3 trillion borrowing limit on May 16. The debt limit is the amount the government can borrow to help finance its operations. A lower credit rating could ripple through the U.S. economy and ul-

timately hurt consumers. That’s because many loans, including mortgages, tend to follow yields on U.S. Treasury bonds. So interest rates could rise.

Dems silent about Weiner

Publicly silent, fellow Democrats privately seethed yesterday over the distraction and furor surrounding the lewd photo sent from Rep. Anthony Weiner’s Twitter account, even as he declared he was finished talking about it and wanted to move on. Weiner’s one-day, pun-laden media blitz a day earlier had only raised more questions about the embarrassing flap when he conceded he wasn’t sure whether the waistdown photo of a man’s bulging underpants was of him or not. His refusal to involve law enforcement because he said as a member of Congress he shouldn’t get special treatment — instead turning the issue over to a private security company he hired — raised rather than answered questions.

Google traced the origin of the attacks to Jinan, China, the home city of a military vocational school whose computers were linked to a more sophisticated assault on Google’s systems 17 months ago. The two attacks are not believed to be linked. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Obama administration doesn’t restrict government employees from using personal Gmail accounts, but does direct workers to use government email for official business. A day after Google exposed the breach, China denied yesterday that it supports hacking and said it is part of global efforts to combat computer security threats.

Food pyramid out, ‘My Plate’ in for healthy eating

The Agriculture Department unveiled “My Plate yesterday, abandoning the food pyramid that had guided many Americans but merely confused others. The new guide is divided into four slightly different-sized quadrants, with fruits and vegetables taking up half the space and grains and protein making up the other half. The vegetables and grains portions are the largest of the four. [See THE UPDATE, page 20]

Gone are the old pyramid’s references to sugars, fats or oils. What was once a category called “meat and beans” is now simply “proteins,” making way for seafood and vegetarian options like tofu. Next to the plate is a blue circle for dairy, which could be a glass of milk or a food such as cheese or yogurt. Some critics, including congressional Republicans, have charged the Obama administration of reaching too far in trying to make Americans eat healthier, especially when it comes to new rules that tell schools what children can eat on campus.

Student debt could limit schools’ aid access

The government is moving forward with its crackdown on the country’s forprofit schools, aiming to protect students from taking on too much debt to attend schools that do nothing for their job prospects. Most students at career colleges and

vocational schools pay tuition with federal financial aid dollars. But that leaves taxpayers on the hook if students can’t find good jobs and default on their loans. And they are defaulting in large numbers. Students at for-profit institutions such as technical programs and culinary schools represent just 12 percent of all higher education students but 46 percent of all student loan dollars in default. The average student earning an associate degree at a for-profit school carries $14,000 in federal loan debt versus the $0 debt burden of most community college students. Some schools have been trying to get out in front of the new laws and adapt their business models to the new reality even before the rule was finalized. Apollo’s University of Phoenix, for example, now offers a free, three-week orientation that helps weed out unprepared students without charging them.

Wildfire near Keystone Resort

Crews are trying to protect homes from a small wildfire that has broken out near Keystone Resort. The Summit Daily News reports the fire had burned about two acres yesterday afternoon, but the flames were shooting 30 feet in the air. Fire officials say strong winds are causing problems. Gov. John Hickenlooper has issued a disaster declaration, authorizing up to $2.5 million in state aid for the firefighting costs that include several other statewide fires.

f you ever had hip pain you know how agonizing it can be. Several years ago I developed hip pain without sustaining any significant trauma or injury. I received various treatments without seeing any improvement. I was told I had bursitis and having surgery done could correct the problem. In searching for a conservative solution. I met a sports injury specialist who was developing a dynamic new treatment for soft tissue (muscles, tendons, etc) injuries. This tretment is called Active Release Treatment (ART). He examined my hip and found a muscle that had gotten so tight it created a “false hip arthritis”. After three treatments, my hip pain was gone and I have been running pain free ever since.

A woman who was kidnapped, raped and held captive for 18 years was so afraid of her abductors that she never tried to escape, according to court documents released yesterday. Jaycee Dugard said in testimony to a grand jury that she was zapped with a stun gun while being taken from a South Lake Tahoe street at age 11 and kept under a blanket in a car as she was driven to the home of Phillip and Nancy Garrido. Dugard said she heard a man laughing as he said, “I can’t believe we got away with it.”

Where did all the workers go?

Yuma County Sheriff’s detectives investigate the scene of a homicide at a residence east of Wellton, Ariz. on yesterday. At least five people were killed and one was wounded in a series of shootings in southwest Arizona that forced officials to lock down a courthouse and area schools. AP photo

States consider: Is it legal to dissolve bodies?

Hal Shimp didn’t want a traditional send-off after death. He didn’t want a big, somber service, and he certainly didn’t want to be buried. When the 91-year-old World War II veteran died in February after a cancer battle, his body tissue was dissolved using heat and lye, turning it into a liquid that could be poured down a drain and a dry bone residue given to relatives, who plan to scatter it when they plant a tree in his honor. Proponents say it has lower operating costs and is greener than traditional cremation because it does not cause the emissions that incineration does, such as carbon dioxide and mercury from dental fillings. But skeptics question the social implications of sending someone’s remains down the drain, and whether it’s safe for the environment and

public health. Changes taking effect this year will allow alkaline hydrolysis in Kansas, Maryland and Colorado, where the governor signed a bill into law April 6.

Ariz. man kills five before taking own life

A 73-year-old man’s shooting rampage in towns near the Arizona border left six people dead yesterday, including the suspect and the attorney who represented his exwife in their divorce. Police said Carey Hal Dyess also wounded one person in the shootings around Yuma, a city of about 200,000, before he was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound nearly six hours after the first shots were fired. “This is not a random act, Yuma Police Chief Jerry Geier said. “These victims were targeted. He said Dyess then fatally shot four people around town before driving to Yuma and killing prominent attorney Jerrold Shelley at about 9:20 a.m. The bodies in Wellton were found between 8:20 and

The labor force — those who have a job or are looking for one — is getting smaller, even though the economy is growing and steadily adding jobs. That trend defies the rules of a normal economic recovery. Nobody is sure why it’s happening. Economists think some of the missing workers have retired, have entered college or are getting by on government disability checks. Others have probably just given up looking for work. “A small work force means millions of discouraged workers, lower output in the future and a weak recovery, says Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, the ranking Republican on the Congress’ Joint Economic Committee. “Those are unhealthy signs. By the government’s definition, if you quit looking, you’re no longer counted as unemployed. And you’re no longer part of the labor force.

Lindsay Lohan’s bracelet malfunctions

Lindsay Lohan’s attorney says the actress’s electronic monitoring bracelet has been replaced after a malfunction. Attorney Shawn Holley said yesterday that Lohan’s electronic monitoring system went off on Monday. Holley says a representative from the monitoring company went to Lohan’s house in Venice and found her at home. The bracelet was replaced the next day. Lohan was arrested twice for driving under the influence in 2007, and remains on probation for offenses. She is serving about 35 days of house arrest for violating her probation by taking a necklace without permission. —Update stories, unless otherwise cited, appear courtesy The Associated Press

Schiavone to play Na at French Open final

As Maria Sharapova prepared to serve while only a point from defeat in the French Open semifinals, Li Na was thinking what any opponent would at that precise moment. “I was, like, ‘Please, double-fault. That way I can win the match,’” Li explained to the crowd a few moments later. Sharapova obliged. Her second serve hit the white tape atop the net and bounced back for Sharapova’s 10th double-fault of an error-filled afternoon, closing Li’s 6-4, 7-5 victory yesterday. The result ended Sharapova’s bid to complete a career Grand Slam, and allowed Li to reach a second consecutive major final. At the Australian Open in January, Li was the runnerup, the first tennis player from China to reach a major championship match. At the French Open on Saturday — when she will play defending champion Francesca Schiavone — Li can become the first Grand Slam champion from her nation of more than 1 billion people. The sixth-seeded Li said she wants her sport to “get bigger and bigger” back home. Noting that Chinese children probably saw her semifinal on TV, Li said that perhaps “they think that maybe one day, they can do the same — or even better.” A year ago at Roland Garros, Schiavone became the first woman from Italy to win one of tennis’ four most important titles. But she had failed to make it to the final of any tournament since then, until taking the last four games to beat 11th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-3, 6-3 yesterday. “When I come here,” the fifth-seeded Schiavone said, “I feel something special.” After Bartoli’s last two-handed forehand — she grips her racket with both fists on nearly every shot — dropped into the net to end the day’s second semifinal, Schiavone celebrated by bending down and rubbing her right palm on the clay court, then making a fist and kissing it.

SPORTS McIlroy shares Memorial lead

Rory McIlroy only gets to play three regular PGA Tour events this year. He showed yesterday why the Memorial Tournament was one of them. In Dublin, Ohio, on a Muirfield Village course that already ranks among his favorites, McIlroy had a birdie putt on his last eight holes and converted half of them on his way to a 6-under 66 to join Chris Riley in the lead after the first round. McIlroy hit the ball so pure that he shot 32 on the front nine despite missing three birdie putts inside 8 feet. “A great way to start the tournament,” McIlroy said. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland narrowly made the cut at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship and wound up in a tie for 24th. Asked the difference between last week and this week, he replied, “It’s about 30 degrees warmer.” A tournament known for its sloppy weather has been spectacular, and it showed in the scoring on a wellmanicured course. Chris DiMarco and Josh Teater were at 67, followed by a large group at 68 that included Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Stewart Cink and Rickie Fowler, the runner-up at the Memorial last year. Luke Donald, in his debut as the No. 1 player in the world ranking, recovered from a slow start by making four straight birdies toward the end of his round for a 70. He played with Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and four-time major champion Phil Mickelson, who each had a 72. Mickelson did that without making a single birdie on the par 5s.

Mets overcome seven-run deficit to beat Pirates

Terry Collins was still full of energy, his voice still loud and the words still tumbling out just as fast as they came to mind. The only thing different this time was the message. After giving his team a tongue-lashing the previous night, the New York manager watched from the dugout as his team clawed back from a seven-run deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8 on yesterday, the Mets’ biggest comeback win in more than a decade. “You need wins like this to show you can do it,” Collins said. “You have 27 outs. You don’t stop until the game is over.” The Mets were already trailing 7-0 when Carlos Beltran’s three-run homer in the third inning gave them a boost. Beltran then hit a leadoff double in the sixth as the Mets scored four times to tie the game. Ruben Tejada delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth off Jose Veras (1-2) and Beltran drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning. Chavez records four hits to help Rangers rally past Indians Endy Chavez had four hits and the Texas Rangers

overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 yesterday night. Yorvit Torrealba drove in two runs and Nelson Cruz twice doubled to start three-run rallies as the defending AL champions won for the fourth time in their last five road games. Chavez had a run-scoring triple and scored in a threerun sixth against Carlos Carrasco (4-3) that put Texas ahead 6-3. His ninth four-hit game tied a career high. Since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on May 14, he is hitting .415 (17 of 41). The Rangers had only one hit through four innings before tying the score at 3 in the fifth. Cleveland dropped to 19-7 at home and 20-7 when scoring first. Carrasco couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead but the Indians still have the best record in the AL. Michael Kirkman (1-0) earned his first career win. The left-hander allowed one run over three innings in his 18th career relief outing. Neftali Perez pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances.

Kid Rock, center, Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, of Sweden, right, and retired Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, left, use paddle boards to cross the Detroit River to Belle Isle in Detroit yesterday. AP photo.

Kid Rocks Motor City

Kid Rock stormed a Detroit riverfront beach with friends by paddleboard yesterday to announce a hometown concert at the city’s baseball park this summer. Rock, Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom and retired Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios used paddleboards to cross the Detroit River to Belle Isle. A bare-footed Rock then strolled to a beachfront microphone and lectern and said during a news conference that he’d be playing Comerica Park Aug. 12 with opening act Sammy Hagar and the Wabos. The hit-making rocker said he decided to combine both activities after Chelios called him a day earlier and asked if he wanted to go paddleboarding “I thought it was just a good way to showcase Detroit, Belle Isle, Rock said of his water-based arrival plan on the island park in the river that separates Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. “Come out with some friends. Let everybody know that Comerica Park’s coming with Sammy Hagar. Everybody wins, right? “I brought some beers for everybody here. Rock, who was born Robert Ritchie and grew up in and lives in suburban Detroit, is known for dabbling in a variety of musical styles, from hip-hop and hard rock to country and Southern rock. He counts as his biggest hits “Picture, ‘’All Summer Long, ‘’Bawitdaba and “Born Free. yesterday’s news came on the heels of an announcement that Rock will be going out on the second leg of his “Born Free tour, which kicks off July 2 in Cincinnati.

He last played Comerica two years ago and performed a special birthday show at Ford Field, Detroit’s NFL stadium, in January when he turned 40. He also recently accepted an award from the Detroit branch of the NAACP and held a news conference with Mayor Dave Bing at which he donated a total of $50,000 to five area charities. Rock, during his beach press conference, worried his profile may be getting a bit too high in the Motor City. “I should probably go away for a while, he said. “Sometimes you feel a little overexposed. People are getting sick of me. Still, Rock said he’s been in discussions to be the subject of a Comedy Central roast — if it’s filmed in Detroit. “I’m not going to go to L.A. or Las Vegas and get teased, he said. “If they come to Detroit and create some commerce here ... bring it on. I don’t care. Rock said Hagar signed on when the Red Rocker was told he would get the chance to take the stage alongside his friend from Detroit for at least a song or two. “It’s going to be one hell of a party, Hagar said via a statement sent to The Associated Press. “Detroit will never be the same. Hagar is a longtime solo artist and has been a member of Montrose and Chickenfoot, but is best known as the former frontman for Van Halen. His best-selling memoir, “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, was released in March. —These stories, unless otherwise cited, appear courtesy The Associated Press

in 2007. It will also mark the band’s return to one of their Colorado concert arenas, Emmitt said, and one the members have not played together since the 1990s. “It was a great opportunity to come back to State Bridge after many years,” Emmitt said. Something of a Mecca for music lovers and river rats alike, the venue has fostered a unique culture over the years, one that Emmitt said falls in line with Leftover Salmon’s eclectic, freewheeling style.

At one of the band’s past shows at State Bridge, the power failed, driving the band to switch to an acoustic set, which they performed on top of the bar. “Then this dude with a generator truck just randomly showed up,” Emmitt said. “It was wild, it just kind of happened out of the blue, but he hooked himself up and we were able to go back on stage and finish the show.” Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 the day of the show, and are available at www.statebridge.com

With this year’s games expected to see around 40,000 people attending Vail this weekend, the Teva Mountain Games are sure to reach the exact types of people these vendors are looking to sell their product to. “This year we’re excited to partner with the Teva Mountain Games and the Vail Valley Foundation to sponsor the Bouldering event and the Goal Zero Green Light District,” said Halen Seevinck of Goal Zero. “These games really fit our demographic and who we try to reach.” If you’re worried about catching your favorite Mountain Games event and taking advantage of Gear Town, don’t sweat it, as Gear Town is open everyday this weekend during the Games.
