Sleepy, sun-dappled roads meander through landscapes that change like the light. Soft rolling hills, wooded dales and crop-threaded farmlands give way to villages rich in history. For natural escapes, few scenic drives match the winding routes through the 2,427ha Macedon Regional Park which dominates the skyline at the western end of the Macedon Ranges. Spot wildlife throughout the park, even in the shady picnic grounds which are connected by the Macedon Ranges Walking Trail. Leave the car and step out on the recently-constructed Forest Eco-tourism trail to Sanatorium Lake. Along the way, keep your eyes open for some of the 157 species of birds recorded here, plus the numerous kangaroos, swamp wallabies, echidnas, wombats and koalas who call the park home. More than 60,000 hectares of genuine bush experience, the Wombat State Forest straddles the Great Dividing Range from Ballarat in the West to Macedon in the East. The 65km Wombat Forest Drive starts at Daylesford and takes in sights including Lyonville Mineral Springs and the picturesque picnic spot at Nolans Creek. Stay on nature’s trail and continue further south to Lerderderg State Park, a vast enclave for native wildlife that stretches from Blackwood to Bacchus Marsh. Lake Daylesford Tranquil Lake Daylesford was once a very rowdy place. It covers an area previously called Wombat Flat Diggings, where pioneer settler John Egan found gold in August 1851. Daylesford’s first town centre was a cluster of tents and shanties when the town was surveyed in 1854. But Governor Hotham wasn’t happy with the name Wombat and changed it to Daylesford a year later. When the alluvial gold ran out, Wombat Flat Diggings became the site of a Chinese market garden and joss house. This was maintained until 1929 when the man-made Lake Daylesford was created. The busy prospector John Egan made another golden discovery in 1852, this time at Hepburn Springs – named after fellow settler Captain John Hepburn of Smeaton Park – which became known as the Jim Crow Diggings. In the mad rush to dig out the gold, many of the precious mineral springs were put at risk. Thanks to the foresight of Daylesford’s early residents, particularly Swiss Italian settlers, who held their first “springs protection” meeting in 1864, the precious waters were saved. The rest, as they say, is history.

Thanks to their diligence, Hepburn Springs developed into a popular 19th century spa resort where fashionable Melburnians travelled by coach and train to ‘take the waters’. Gracious guest houses and hotels were built, some of which you can still stay in today. At Mt Franklin just north of Daylesford is the Chocolate Mill which produces over 12,000 Belgian chocolates in 90 different varieties every week.
Speaking of choice, fill your pantry with the range of fresh organic vegetables, cheeses and other local produce laid out at the Harvest Café. Sample the Potato Picker’s Pickle with cider or the Szechuan Eggplant Pickle from Country Cuisine, where you can also buy regional berry jams, marmalades, chutneys, pasta sauces and dressings.

Blampied and Lyonville have each resurrected their one-pub village reputations with new energy pumped into reviving their heritage pubs.That said, few streets offer foodies more rewards than Kyneton’s Piper Street.

Further afield, and set on the fringes of the Wombat State Forest, is the sleepy spot of Trentham. ChillOut Festival
from humble beginnings to an Australian icon Since its inception ChillOut has grown to become the largest gay and lesbian festival in regional Australia and the largest festival in Hepburn Shire. With steady growth in attendance each year, over 25,000 people attended ChillOut in 2009 and nearly 100 stallholders participated at Carnival Day. ChillOut began as an annual festival of the Springs Connection, a local gay and lesbian business group in Daylesford in 1997 over the Victoria Labour Day long-weekend in March. The inaugural festival was held at the Old Winery in Ballan Road attracting participation from 10 stallholders and 50 – 100 visitors over one Sunday afternoon. A true celebration of diversity and community ChillOut weekend includes a feast of entertainment and events to appeal to everyone. Arts, crafts, literature, food and wine, live music and cabaret events are just some of the events that will take you on your own odyssey through the diversity of culture, health and wellbeing in the region. When it comes to fine food and wine, the villages of the Macedon Ranges all excel. Woodend even boasts its own brew-house. This cosy township has the peaceful ambience you expect for a little village set snugly on the Northern fringe of the Black Forest. It’s the place to buy native plants, delicious preserves and smallgoods, and laze by the fireside with a good book and cafe latte. By contrast, Kyneton hums with contemporary culture, much of it happening within the town’s elegant and historic streetscapes. In fact, the street that seems the most reserved, heritage-listed Piper Street – boasts all kinds of creative pursuits, from stonework to wool spinning. No surprise that Kyneton was recently named by Melbourne’s Age newspaper as one of Victoria’s most interesting gastronomic destinations. In a historic sense, Malmsbury is a must. The National Trust-classified viaduct was created from local bluestone and stands just as proud today as when it was first built during the mid 19th century. With wide streets and classic heritage buildings, nearby Lancefield is a quiet traditional country town surrounded by rolling farmland. Delve into the area’s fascinating history as you travel the scenic drive along the Burke and Wills Track, the route taken by the explorers when they left Lancefield in 1860 after stocking up on supplies. Nestled among the spectacular Macedon Ranges with historic monuments, imposing mansions, and grand gardens are the villages of Macedon and Mount Macedon. Both peaceful, leafy townships are well worth a visit, with welcoming eateries, and a warm ambience all surrounded by the 2,427ha Macedon Regional Park. Not far from ‘the Mount’ is Gisborne, a village in the valley with a bustling community life. The first Sunday of each month sees the Gisborne Olde Time Market spring to life with a variety of stalls from local food and wine to second hand goods. The village experience of the Macedon Ranges is unlike any other in the state and so close to Melbourne, in under an hour’s drive.
