youth arts academy The Youth Arts Academy is a community center slash school for children ages fourteen to twenty to discover theater, dance, music and art at a fun and prestigious place. The architectural spaces of dance and music cantilever out to incorporate contextual ideas as well and creating a dramatic and dynamic exterior. This new 23,000 square foot academy is located in Grover Beach Califor nia. Grover Beach is a small beach community located on the central coast of Califor nia, 15 miles south of San Luis Obispo. It is positioned on a small site 100’ x 117’ and neighbors a church, a children’s exploratorium, a public library, and a public park. The concept of this building is interaction and intersection of the arts and media. The program consists of a theater plus backstage and seating, a dance studio, an art studio, a music studio with small lear ning spaces, a classroom, and student lounge/study spaces. The form of the building was reflected off of my initial concept models and site analysis models where the four spaces (Theater, Dance, Art, and Music) are all connecting/ intersection through a shared space/circulation space. The two studios on the front south facing facades are the Dance (yellow) and Music (Orange). The dance studio is orientated towards the pacific ocean at 15° while the music studio is orientated 20° towards the neighboring art, dance, showing relationships and reflectance. The colors of the building, purple, orange, yellow, and teal suggest playful interactions, a friendly and fun lear ning environment, and an icon for Grover beach. The school consists of four floors including the basement where the public entrance is on the ground floor and as one rises higher the floors and spaces become much more private with a student lounge, study, library on the top floor with outdoor spaces and green roofs for lear ning and viewing the city of Grover beach.
