PURSUING
UNION MAGAZINE | FALL 2022

FROM PRESIDENT

Dear De La Salle Community:

After over a year of serving De La Salle as your president, I am reminded that I knew this community would be special, I just didn’t know it could be this special. I remain so grateful for standing on the shoulders of giants and being able to serve on behalf of the De La Salle Christian Brothers who educated and formed me. Our Lasallian Catholic mission anchors who we are, what we do, and how we do it. And you can tell that Winton Drive is unique because when you’re here you are moved simply by knowing this ground holds a connective memory of people past, present, and future who live it; who are Men of Faith, Integrity, and Scholarship.

How does that come to be? A commitment. A commitment to mission, to excellence, to living the values we preach. In this edition of the Union, you will uncover a world that beats with a collective dedication to excellence. Excellence is far more inclusive than perfection because it is really about a commitment to habit, to intentional practices. You will read about students, staff, and alumni who are rooted in the choices it takes to be excellent; and not for glory’s sake. No, we know that our intentional choices toward excellence are rooted in our mission as a Lasallian Catholic school and the greater glory of God (sorry, but I had to borrow from the Jesuits). You will discover that there is so much more intention about what we do and why we do it than meets the eye. Perhaps that is the secret sauce of De La Salle High School.

This Union is also our annual report and I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the many in our Spartan community who have answered the call to support our young men, staff, and programs. There is a common misperception among some that De La Salle has all that we need. This is far from the truth. To remain competitive in a complex landscape, to meet the Brothers’ mission to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor, we need to strive for more. Therefore, I thank the more than 1,500 donors who supported us at any level this past fiscal year. You honor us with your financial support and you buoy us with your spiritual support. I regularly say it is not about the size of the gift, but what the gift represents.

Finally, as we go about this fall and school year, if you haven’t had the occasion to come back to campus, come back. We miss you. If you have been thinking about where to volunteer and share your talents, I bet we could use them. If you are wondering if now is the time to make your first gift, I can tell you it is. All of this is simply to say, De La Salle is a stronger community when we are all in it together. However you wish to engage, please do.

Enjoy this edition of the Union. Come back to it again and again when you need a little nectar of joy. You’ll find tons to make you proud, as we most certainly are.

The School Seal

The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

Graduation 2022

David J. Holquin, President

“It is our hope as a De La Salle graduate, armed with our love, instruction, and guidance, that whatever you do in life, you do so with great love. Celebrate your accomplishments but learn from your mistakes. Have confidence in your abilities, but be humble and serve others. Don’t shy from controversy, but don’t always start it. Challenge injustice. Make the world a better place by how you live. Love not because of what you will get in return, but love because it is so much better than hate. Call your parents and loved ones. Pray. And if you think it isn’t working, pray harder. Believe that nothing is impossible with God. And, always, always bet on yourself.“

“To demonstrate either kindness or affection requires of the giver a number of things. It requires us to be humble and thoughtful. It requires us to recognize the other as different from the self, to recognize that the person standing in front of us matters and is worthy and is a child of God. It requires deliberateness and thoughtfulness; intentionality as it were. It requires a perspective that has been born out of your unique experiences of having much of your high school dictated by the vicissitudes of the pandemic. It requires us to be like Jesus that the Gospel of Luke gives us: namely, a Jesus that understands Faith not as a belief but more importantly as Action. It requires us to be deeply Lasallian.”

Zane Mogannam, Class of 2022 Valedictorian

“As individuals and as a community, we have undoubtedly experienced times during our four years at De La Salle that we would consider to be the “best of times.” Whether it be providing outstanding community service, garnering academic awards, or shattering athletic records, our class has cause for quite a bit of celebration over the past four years. We have also grown and thrived as individuals — we’ve overcome a myriad of obstacles, and as a result, we have become wiser and stronger. We all spent almost nine months isolated, and some of us spent over a year sheltering in place. Yet, we never allowed our adverse circumstances to hinder our maturation, our dedication, our drive, or our Brotherhood. I am insurmountably grateful to have been inspired by you all. It has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime to experience and contribute to the brotherhood that lives so vivaciously among us — some of the best men I’ve ever met — the graduating Spartans of 2022!”

Scott Tomaszewicz, Class of 2022 Salutatorian

“Even through a pandemic, we have exceeded expectations in the classroom, received college acceptance letters, and dominated in athletics; but most importantly, we have become fine young men who serve others, continue to embrace personal responsibility, and will pursue lifelong learning. With confidence, I can conclude that the Class of 2022 has found who they are, and as we all make the leap from Concord, California to the rest of the country and beyond, I am excited to see what each of us can accomplish with the blessings we have all received as De La Salle Spartans. The beauty of brotherhood is that it cannot be immediately understood and in order to define it, you must embrace all that this school has to offer. Even after four years, my definition is still ever-changing. De La Salle has taught me that a brother does not have to come in the form of a blood relative, and to experience brotherhood, we do not have to share a last name. But being called a Spartan will always occupy a special place in my heart. There is one thing that separates this school from the rest. Every teacher is your mentor, every counselor is your friend, and all of you are my Brothers. God has brought all of us to this present moment, and I am confident that he will lead us all to where we need to be.”

2022 Lasallian Educator of the Year

John Pelster ’87

Each year, at the Saint La Salle liturgy, Vice President for Academic Life, Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, has had the privilege of honoring an educator who is chosen by his or her peers to receive a very special award – the Lasallian Educator of the Year Award. For the 2021-22 school year, Mr. John Pelster ’87, was selected as the De La Salle High School Lasallian Educator of the Year.

Before making the announcement, Dr. Alumbaugh said, “Each year it is both a challenge and a blessing to choose the Lasallian Educator of the Year. The commitment, respect, and love our faculty give to our students are the same they show one another.” During her presentation, before an audience that included the entire student body as well as De La Salle faculty and staff, Dr. Alumbaugh shared a few of the comments she had received about John from his peers.

One wrote, “John is as good as it gets: thoughtful, fair, meticulous, and giving.” Another shared, “John is an example to the students of how to live one’s life with integrity, compassion, kindness, and dedication.” Yet another voiced, “I can see how much he cares about each student who comes through his door, as students, as well as growing human beings. He gives so much to his students and to his coworkers, and he deserves to be recognized for it.”

Multiple colleagues commented on John’s exceptional generosity as a peer, mentor, and guide. In fact, over the course of Dr. Alumbaugh’s six years at De La Salle, she has never had so many faculty and staff members so uniformly refer to their nominated colleague as a “gifted mentor.”

Throughout his 31-year career at De La Salle, John has worn multiple hats while on De La Salle’s campus. He has been a department chair, an accreditation chair, and an English teacher. He has also served the school as the Varsity Cross Country Coach for the past 18 years.

Everyone John has interacted with has benefited from the thoughtfulness, kindness, and open heart of this deeply deserving and long-time Spartan.

Previous recipients of this award include: Mr. Eidson, Mr. Ladouceur, Mr. Zorad, Mr. Hassett, Mr. Hirsch, Mrs. Stevenson, Mr. Oelschlager, Mrs. Acquistapace, Mr. Guthrie, Ms. Dickson, Mr. Berkes, Mr. Aliotti, Mrs. Appel, Mrs. Mattos, Mr. Graham, Mr. Aquino, Mrs. Talmadge, and our dear Mr. Olwell.

The Lasallian Educator of the Year award honors an educator who is chosen by his or her peers to receive a very special award, and is given to a faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of St. La Salle, specifically meeting the following criteria:

A dedicated and committed individual who is an exemplary educator.

An educator who understands his/her own dignity as a child of God so that he/she can pass this on to students.

A person who cherishes and cares for his/her students like an older brother or sister, and, above all, someone who is committed to a life of faith and expresses that in a commitment to teach his or her students the importance of the spiritual life, inculcating living values.

IN 2022

With the end of the 2021-22 school year, De La Salle High School celebrated the retirement of six long-time faculty and staff members. Together, they had accumulated more than 130 years of service to the school. These individuals include Campus Ministry Co-Directors Roger and Mary Hassett, Allan Hightman from our Building and Grounds staff, Vice President for Finance, Lynne Jones, Spanish teacher Guillermina OlivaNicholson, and Administrative Assistant, Dee Turrin.

Roger and Mary Hassett

For 25 years (1996-2022), Roger and Mary Hassett guided the Campus Ministry Department at De La Salle. Over the years, they were responsible for coordinating multiple liturgies, class retreats, and immersion programs. They also launched the extremely popular Kairos Senior Retreat program in the early 2000s and attended most, if not all, of the 139 senior retreats that have happened over the past 20 years.

Allan Hightman

In 2022, during his 36th year as a member of the De La Salle High School Buildings and Grounds Staff, Allan Hightman was named the St. Benilde Award recipient, which recognizes an administrative staff member who plays a significant role in the successful operations of the school. Allan, who was considered one of the most dedicated persons on campus, genuinely cared for the school, its students, and its staff. Ever since he began his job in October of 1985, Allan approached his work as a ministry, not as a job.

Lynne Jones

After an eight-year stint as Vice President for Finance, Lynne Jones is set to retire on October 1, 2022. Lynne came to De La Salle in March of 2014. During her time at De La Salle, she was involved in two major capital campaigns: one to construct a brand new STREAM Building (in 2016) and the other to remodel the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center (in 2018). In 2021, she oversaw the project to add Solar Panels to the De La Salle rooftops. Completed in 2022, this initiative will result in the school saving over $125,000 per year on power costs.

Guillermina Oliva-Nicholson

At the end of the 2021-22 school year, Guillermina Oliva-Nicholson completed 24 years at De La Salle High School, teaching AP Spanish, Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, and Heritage Spanish 1 and 2 as part of the World Languages Department. She is known for her quiet demeanor, which is one of the many reasons why students were able to engage with her. A mother of one, to a son named Christian, and a grandmother to Gianna, Guillermina will be greatly missed. She has been a wonderful colleague and friend to many.

Dee Turrin

Dee Turrin completed her 14th year at De La Salle in 2022, serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Life for the past six years. During her time at De La Salle, Dee also held the position of Assistant to the Director of Academic Services and the Director of Faculty Development and supported the Registrar’s Office, as well as Mr. Aliotti, Dean of Students. Although officially retired, Dee will remain on staff part-time in an administrative role for the College Counseling Office.

A few “Words” Spencer Shively

Thinking back on my first day as a new teacher at De La Salle, I remember being a mix of nerves and excitement. The excitement came from the fact that I was starting my teaching career at De La Salle High School, one of the few high schools in the state, and even in other parts of the country, that was a household name. The nerves came from the fact that, at barely 23 years of age, I was going to be teaching five sections of sophomore and junior boys that were only a few years younger than I was at the time. As I drove to campus on that first day and made the left turn off Winton Drive onto the Brothers’ Driveway, I was greeted by a sign that read “Inspiration Drive. Begin with the End in Mind.” While this sign no longer exists, the words have stuck with me for my entire career.

On my first day, the end that I had in mind was surviving until the final bell rang after the sixth period. Later that day, the bell did ring and I breathed a sigh of relief. I had made it through my first day as a teacher. Nineteen years later, I look back on my decision to work at De La Salle as one of the best life decisions I have ever made. I have loved my time as a classroom teacher, Department Chair, and club moderator. I have loved it not because of the subjects I have taught throughout the years, but because of the students I’ve had the privilege to teach, and the Lasallian Catholic values and mission that ground our work.

I have always felt the work we do at De La Salle goes much deeper than the academic content we teach. Yes, we teach how to solve for x in algebra, write a compelling essay, and write computer programs. These are important skills that our students do learn, but they aren’t the reason why I have stayed here for the past 19 years. What has kept me here is our Lasallian Catholic values: faith, love, joy, service, dignity, and excellence. These are what make us special and they are the reason I continue to work at De La Salle. These values are what remain with our graduates long after the facts learned in the classroom are applied to other aspects of life.

As I embark on a new journey in my role as Vice President for Mission and Student life, the words on the sign that I saw on my first day continue to be my guide. I begin this role with the end in mind. The end that I seek is a vibrant school culture that animates our Lasallian Catholic values on a daily basis. A culture that you can feel when you step foot on campus. A culture that continues our mission and develops men of faith, integrity, and scholarship. I look forward to partnering with all members of this community to grow and develop co-curricular programming that will make this vision a reality.

Distinguished Lasallian Educator for 2022Terry Eidson

Terry Eidson has worn many hats at De La Salle since he began teaching Religious Studies 42 years ago. He has been the Director of Student Activities, the face of Campus Ministry, the Assistant Dean of Students, the head of the Religious Studies Department, and De La Salle’s Athletic Director. In addition, he has coached countless Spartans in football, baseball, and golf. In fact, Terry’s impact on high school sports over the years has been so prolific that he has amassed awards like Aflac Assistant Coach of the Year (2002), North Coast Section Athletic Director of the Year (2003), De La Salle Coach of the Year (1984 and 1992), NCS Honor Golf Coach (2019), and CIF Coach of the Year (2020).

However, this past month, Terry was informed that he is the recipient of an entirely different kind of award. One that is unique to only a handful of Lasallian educators across North America. The annual Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award is presented by the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) to honorees from each of RELAN’s four Districts, including the District of San Francisco New Orleans within which De La Salle resides. In total, teachers from 79 colleges, universities, secondary schools, middle schools, and elementary schools are considered. The Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award is then given to those who exemplify the ideals of St. John Baptist de La Salle, Patron Saint of Teachers of Children and Youth. These are educators who foster Gospel values in the lives of faculty, staff, and students.

In Terry, RELAN and the District of San Francisco New Orleans could not have found a more worthy recipient. While he became a household name as one of the architects, with Coach Bob Ladouceur, of a football program that holds the longest team winning streak in sports history, it is the work that Terry does quietly behind the scenes that truly sets him apart from other educators. Whether that is assisting with De La Salle’s Bishop Cummins Program — something that he specifically requested after retiring from coaching because of his passion to serve students who need him most — or integrating innovative research into curriculum and practices that teaches young men to become men of integrity.

However, his use of what he calls the “Question Box” perfectly encapsulates how Terry goes above and beyond to put students first. Terry designed the box so that students can safely ask questions anonymously. The questions can be about anything: identity, life growth issues, relationships, spiritual issues, and more. His goal is to provide mentorship that helps students learn how to think about and respectfully discuss important and weighty issues.

“Whatever he teaches, he believes in, is passionate about, and really lives,” says Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Vice President for Academic Life at De La Salle High School. “He recognizes every student as an individual with in-dwelling divinity, and he crafts his teaching so that each student can learn. He is truly one of the most extraordinary educators with whom I have ever had the pleasure to work. He is living testament to the power of Lasallian education to transform lives for the better.”

The Pursuit EXCELLENCE

The word excellence is deeply embedded within how De La Salle High School lives out its core values. Every young man who enters De La Salle knows that he is expected to graduate as a man of scholarship; someone who strives for academic excellence and pursues lifelong learning. It is one of the school’s three Integral Student Outcomes.

It only comes to follow then, that excellence is demonstrated in De La Salle’s output. In the last five years, nearly 100% of graduates matriculated to college, and Spartans have consistently been welcomed at Ivy League schools across the country. Outside the classroom, students qualify and perform at prestigious events like the California State Science Fair and the Contra Costa County Mock Trials Championship. In sports, not only did every varsity team have a 3.0 GPA or higher last year, but De La Salle’s athletic program dominated to such an extent that the school was named the number one boy’s school for athletics in the state — for the eighth time.

But why theme an entire Union Magazine around the concept of excellence? After all, De La Salle considers itself humble in nature. It is one of the many Gospel values that it shares with its students: “Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, humble.” 1 Peter 3:8.

The answer is simple. De La Salle does not focus on success. Instead, it looks for ways to build and reinforce the foundation upon which excellence has the opportunity to grow. As Leo Lopez, Vice President for Athletics, recently said, “it’s not about the end goal, it is about the journey.” Or as Spencer Shively, the new Vice President for Mission and Student Life, puts it, it’s about “intentional excellence.”

Excellence doesn’t just happen. It is not a coincidence. It follows purposeful action. These next few pages are intended to shed light on some of the many ways De La Salle intentionally pursues excellence.

11 | Union Magazine

Lasallian Partners

Educational excellence starts with the right people. Whether in front of students or behind the scenes, De La Salle faculty and staff are intent on creating a loving, healthy educational environment that facilitates learning and development. But it is more than that. Talk to anyone who works at De La Salle and you will immediately get the sense that they see their work not as a job but as a vocation.

This was never more apparent than at a recent meeting with new Lasallian partners. (And, yes, De La Salle’s use of the Christian Brothers’ term Lasallian Partner, which describes all faculty and staff, is intentional). As the new Lasallian Partners introduced themselves one by one to their peers, they shared stories of how they had come to be at the table. There was a common thread. Each partner articulated, in their own way, their desire to serve. How they wanted their work to be impactful and have meaning, and how they had felt guided, nudged, and even invited to their chosen path at De La Salle.

How does this sense of calling translate to the students? It means educators aren’t just teaching pre-defined coursework. Instead, they are constantly looking for new ways to reach and engage their students. In this quest, they spend countless personal hours researching and developing techniques to bring back to their classrooms. They are constantly innovating.

Take, for instance, Melissa Marnell, De La Salle’s Mathematics Department Chair. She is always on the hunt for new

tools and strategies that will keep her classes fresh, fun, and effective. Melissa was able to cut the start-of-term review period in AP Calculus from two weeks to two days thanks to some circuit quizzes she discovered in an online forum. This means her students can start learning new content almost immediately at the beginning of the school year. She’s also known for her Trade Quizzes, which involve students trading Calculus questions on notecards. While unconventional, her students unanimously say the cards help them better understand a topic.

Over in the Physics Department, Corey Kelly takes inspiration from seemingly unlikely places. He once scheduled a visit to an elementary school so that he could observe how teachers ran stations and group work for students who couldn’t read or follow directions because of their age. His theory was that it might highlight ways he could be more efficient in his classroom. He then brought his findings back to his senior physics class — using his observations to re-imagine how he organized student groupings and delineated roles.

However, inspiration doesn’t have to come from peer groups and other classrooms. It can also come directly from the young men themselves. Just this quarter, Melissa adjusted how she taught one of her lessons based on a senior asking if he could use summation notation. Now, she intends to use simplified expressions for her lesson moving forward. In Corey’s class, he directly solicits feedback from students at the end of the first and third quarters. He trusts in the relationships that he’s formed with his students. That they’ll be honest about their thoughts on lessons and whether they are being heard, even though the survey isn’t anonymous.

FALL 2022 | 12

This openness to trying new things perfectly complements the passion and fun that teachers like Melissa Marnell and Corey Kelly bring to De La Salle. Students may find themselves in AP Calculus, where they are essentially in a college class, but that doesn’t mean they won’t find a good luck smiley face at the top of their quiz. And in science, you may be learning complex material, but you’ll be doing it in a physical way, with real-world applications.

Innovation also happens at the curriculum level. Religious Studies teacher Dr. Chris Miller is the perfect example. He was named the first 2022 Mental Health Champion by the Steinberg Institute and was the leading force behind the state of California adopting mental health education as part of the required curriculum. His unique contribution supports the efforts of De La Salle’s four school counselors, who each work daily to support the health and well-being of their students.

More than anything though, Lasallian Partners form relationships. In a De La Salle student survey, 91.4% of seniors said that they had a teacher, administrator, or other trusted adult at De La Salle that they can turn to in times of need. This stands in stark contrast to an October 2019 study in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, which found that only 53.4% of students, in a survey involving 10,291 students across 38 high schools, named a trusted adult. This does not happen by accident. It is the result of countless meaningful interactions inside and outside of the classroom. It is the 3,000 plus tutoring hours that faculty log each year. It is about creating spaces where students can feel safe, loved, and supported. Whether these are the open door policies that teachers offer during break and lunch periods, or the hang-out areas at Campus Ministry and Student Life. It is also the support that students feel at their clubs and other after-school activities.

Put simply, Lasallian Partners are passionate and committed to serving De La Salle’s students. It is at the forefront of everything they do. Their belief in the vision of Saint John Baptist de La Salle is what drives them. It is no wonder that 47% of faculty have been with the school for a decade or more. It is also why 24 faculty and staff are alumni, who have returned to pass their knowledge to the next generation.

Habitual Instruction

In his book TheStoryofPhilosophy:TheLivesandOpinionsofthe World’sGreatestPhilosophers, Will Durant paraphrased Aristotle’s thoughts on excellence. He said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” De La Salle Physics teacher, Corey Kelly, breaks down the same idea further in the presentation he gives his seniors at the start of each school year. He says, “Habits become who you are.”

De La Salle is founded on the belief that a Lasallian education promotes faith, excellence, and learning, with relationships as the starting point. At the same time, the school strives to educate the whole person — not just the mind, but also the body and spirit. This convergence is a unique one that is very much lived and breathed daily. It is woven into every part of the student experience.

There is a reason why students have a dress code that includes wearing collared shirts and keeping a well-groomed face. (And why Deans of Students, Joe Aliotti and Bob Guelld ‘81, have spare razors on hand for those students that forget.) There is a reason why each day starts with a prayer that reminds participants that they are always in the holy presence of God. There is a reason why students are marked absent if they are more than five minutes late to class. There is a reason why the cafeteria serves fresh, wholesome, homemade food. Just as there is a reason why the Ladouceur Performance Athletic Center is made available to everyone and not just the 70% of students who are on a De La Salle sports team. There is a reason why words like respect, integrity, honor, and responsibility are part of the school’s vernacular.

It is also why De La Salle runs a freshman Motivational Speaker Series during its Study Skills class. Hearing powerful narratives from community members gives rise to student conversations about goal setting, accountability, character, work ethic, values, and leadership. It is something that students are able to take with them as they move

through school. Similarly, in 2004, De La Salle created the Student Coalition On Respectful Education (SCORE) for freshmen as part of an initiative to foster respect for others, as well as an appreciation of individual, cultural, and socioeconomic differences.

However, more than this, there is structure and repetition. On campus, core ethical values like trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship are mirrored back to students by faculty and staff, as well as by peers. In the classroom, as well as in De La Salle’s Learning Center, students are not only taught skills to help them succeed but they are also held accountable for their efforts. Just ask Terry Eidson, who retired from his historic football coaching career to help with the Bishop Cummins Program. Daily check-ins with his students are part of the course. That includes text message exchanges, outside school hours, so that students can provide photographic evidence that they have completed homework.

As Terry explains, “success is not a sometimes thing, it is an allthe-time thing.” He expects his students to work hard every day to make themselves a success. In return, these students receive the love and support that they need to attain that success. This comes from teachers and staff like Terry, as well as adult tutors, National Honor Society students, and Bishop Cummins Scholars. Work ethic and loving support are a winning formula that delivers results. Terry knows he is making positive progress with his students when they no longer address him as Mr. Edison but, rather, as Coach. The shift in the interpersonal relationship reflects not only a deeper level of trust but also a shift in student mindset.

Of course, habitual growth happens outside the academic arena too. One of De La Salle’s core Lasallian principles is that students enter to learn and leave to serve. It presents itself not only in the classroom but throughout the East Bay and beyond. De La Salle students cumulatively clock more than 50,000 community service hours in any given year, while also raising funds to support local, national, and international charitable organizations. This past year, students collected over 3,000 cereal boxes for the 21st Annual Cereal Drive, donated hundreds of toys during the Christmas Toy Drive, and raised $30,000 to support local and global charities. Within Campus Ministry, immersion programs provide students the opportunity to literally walk in the shoes of the poor and marginalized.

It is no wonder then, at graduation, that the highest and most distinguished award, the St. John Baptist de La Salle General Excellence Award, goes to the graduate who exemplifies ALL the ideals of his entire Lasallian education.

Leading the Way

De La Salle believes that it doesn’t just educate young men; it creates servant leaders. Graduates go on to excel in their personal and professional lives. But, more than that, they become leaders within their community. Take, for instance, some of the recent inductees to De La Salle’s Class of 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame. They are recognized not only for their athletic achievements but also for their outstanding community involvement. From civil rights activists and ambassadors for social change to directors of scholarships that expand educational opportunities for low-income students. Each one has a unique story to tell.

In the professional world, leadership can take many forms. De La Salle’s graduates prove this time and again. Some, like Chris Cole ‘99 and Tom King ‘86 go on to build their own businesses. Others, like Greg Lafayette ‘80, oversee operations for multi-million dollar corporations. Some are elected to lead, like Deputy DA Chris Sansoe ‘05 and Concord Mayor Dominic Aliano ‘10. Others, like Kevin Koenig ‘14, a child orthotist and prosthetist, choose professions that significantly improve the physical lives of others. There are also many graduates, like Tadeu Velloso ‘10, who volunteer countless hours of their time, outside of work, to non-profit organizations that are trying to make a difference. Whether that be the eradication of racism, the betterment of women, mentorship for marginalized and adversitystricken youth, or another cause related to social change.

Yet, despite different career choices, there is a commonality. Talk to any De La Salle graduate and you will find that most, if not all, credit their time at De La Salle as being instrumental in how they developed as a person. Similarly, many feel that the skills they learned as a student provided a foundation for professional success as well. As an example, Dominic Aliano, says his parents and his schools (De La Salle High School and St. Agnes School) taught him “important life lessons and exemplified the importance of virtues like courage, integrity, and humility. Virtues needed to be a leader. “

Bob Guelld mentioned something to me in passing that stuck.

That is we are only as strong as our weakest link. No matter where you fit into your team you want to be a strong link that makes the team better; leader or not.

Anthony Pappageorge ‘99, Executive Managing Director, Multifamily Capital Markets

At De La Salle, leadership skills are learned in the classroom and on the sports field, as well as through specific programs. For instance, Service Leadership is an elective that is open to all grades. As Maile Shelley, Campus Minister for Service and Justice, explains, “The main purpose of the program is to help students develop as leaders, set goals for improving their communities, engage others in service, and have a positive, measurable impact on the world.” They do this through a series of service projects, that enable students to manage the complete process, from inception to completion.

This type of community leadership is echoed in other initiatives like the OnBoard! program, which focuses on peer mentoring as part of freshman orientation, as well as the Lasallian Leadership class, which develops personal and interpersonal leadership skills through shared responsibility. Jennifer Stein, the new Director of Student Activities, believes that the Lasallian Leadership class plays an instrumental role in “building a positive and inclusive school climate for the De La Salle community. One that promotes Spartan Pride through leadership, service, spirit, and fun.” Such opportunities help foster leaders, outside the traditional leadership role, while also helping students master public speaking, organization, networking, and personal development.

It is indeed a gift that keeps on giving. De La Salle’s alumni community consists of more than 10,000 men who have taken to heart the teachings of their youth. They have applied integrity, self-awareness, gratitude, learning, empathy, courage, and respect to the world they shape. They not only set an example for the students that follow in their footsteps, but they help ensure that De La Salle’s mission lives on. Some even come back to De La Salle to teach themselves. Travis Pacos ‘11, a De La Salle Math Instructor and Head Coach for Junior Varsity Basketball, explains “The De La Salle community taught me that the pillars of leadership are service and sacrifice. In order to be a great leader, you have to be willing to serve others and sacrifice your own interests for the greater good. The reason why I came back to De La Salle is to teach these same values that I experienced as a student in the classroom and on the basketball court.”

De La Salle graduates also help fund the Bishop Cummins Program; providing tuition for students whose family income falls below the federal poverty line. And they are one of the main reasons why students today are able to reap the benefits of a carefully designed Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STREAM) building.

However, the art of leading is not always easy. Good leadership requires learning agility and the intuition to adapt and pivot when necessary. It also requires knowledge. That is one of the reasons why De La Salle partnered with Stanford University’s Challenge Success program nearly a decade ago. Understanding how students can gain the skills needed to lead healthy, balanced lives, while still engaging in co-curricular activities is a challenge the school wants to better understand. It is why De La Salle was the first school in the nation to pilot the program’s parent survey back in 2018. Indeed, Stanford’s desire to redefine student success and transform the overarching student experience spoke to De La Salle’s students-first ethos.

‘‘
‘‘

Following the 2018 survey, which incorporated feedback from 757 students and 270 parents, De La Salle’s academic departments spent multiple years addressing homework load and adopting school-wide policies regarding Grading and Assessment. It even moved to an alternate assessment model, instead of finals, during the pandemic. In addition, it experimented with Bell Schedules to increase the number of late starts and add additional block days. It also targeted parent education around student wellness; airing documentaries and providing Q&A sessions with De La Salle counselors. As Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Vice President for Academic Life explains, “At every moment, mission, student wellness, balance, and academic outcomes dictate the decisions made at De La Salle.”

Moving forward, based on research recommendations, the school intends to focus on the amount of time students allocate to cocurricular activities. The goal is to reduce student stress and increase the amount of sleep that students experience day-to-day. To that end, De La Salle has just sent a delegation of coaches, as well as the Vice President of Mission and Student Life and the Vice President for Athletics, to Stanford for two days of discussion and learning.

‘‘ ‘‘At De La Salle, you are shown by example every day how to be a leader in the community. Whether it be teachers, coaches, or other staff, the school leads by example. DLS taught me that I can always give more of myself to help others. That isn’t just our duty, but our privilege as leaders in our world. If you learn to embrace that, your potential to impact the lives of others is limitless.

Giving Week De La Salle

Get ready! De La Salle Giving Day is now De La Salle Giving Week, and it’s just around the corner — October 24-28.

Every year, you, members of our treasured community, are asked to invest in what we do here on Winton Drive. Your philanthropic support, in addition to tuition, is very much needed. You help provide financial assistance to more than one-in-three students, as well as facilitate faculty development and innovation, and ensure the continuation of a wide array of co-curricular activities and programs. Each year you answer the call, despite changing social and economic conditions. We cannot thank you enough!

Now, after four years of instrumental support, we thought we’d shake things up. De La Salle Giving Day is now De La Salle Giving Week so that we can properly showcase how, through your gifts, we are able to make a significant difference in the lives of our Spartans. Each day we will share examples of how your hardearned dollars help create De La Salle joy in the classroom, on the field, on stage, and so much more. You are helping us fulfill our Mission statement, “De La Salle High School recognizes and promotes the dignity of each student by providing an environment that is moral, caring, and joyful.”

We hope you will Share in the Joy of Giving later this month!

New Faculty and Staff for the 2022-23 School Year

At the start of the 2022-23 school year, De La Salle welcomed 20 new faculty and staff members. It was the largest intake of Lasallian Partners in decades, primarily due to the introduction of several new appointments, as well as some well-deserved retirements.

Administratively, a new Vice President for Finance started in early October and three new management positions have been created: Director for Admissions, Director of Communications, and Director of Student Activities. At the same time, the school replaced two campus ministry members, hired eight new faculty members, and had multiple maintenance and cafeteria staff join the school family this year.

Chris Garavaglia – Vice President for Finance

De La Salle’s new Vice President for Finance/CFO will be Christine (Chris) Garavaglia. Chris comes from Bishop O’Dowd in Oakland, where she was the CFO since 2011. At O’Dowd, Chris developed a financial modeling tool with a 15-year scenario analysis, implemented a reserve management plan, launched O’Dowd’s compensation study (twice), and was a visible and impactful leader during COVID. Chris’ daughters went to Carondelet and one is married to De La Salle’s very own Travis Pacos ’11. Her husband, Mark Garavaglia ’75, is a De La Salle alumnus, and many of her family are graduates of Carondelet or De La Salle. Chris was described as highly competent and compassionate; whip-smart and a strategic thinker; as well as someone concerned about people and cognizant of the bottom line. The school is lucky to have her following behind the incomparable Lynne Jones.

Michelle Erickson – Director of Communications

Michelle Erickson joins De La Salle as Director of Communications. In this capacity, she is tasked with telling De La Salle’s unique story, as well as driving communications that increase engagement and awareness for the school. Michelle brings with her a wealth of corporate relations and public relations experience, across multiple industry sectors. In the past, she has worked with brands like Visa, HP, IBM, and Travelzoo. She also volunteered her time, managing PTA communications, at Los Cerros Middle School and Green Valley Elementary School. De La Salle Alumni Reunions and Events

2022 Grand Reunion Celebration

After a two-year hiatus, the De La Salle Alumni Association, in partnership with the Carondelet Alumnae Association, was finally able to welcome alums back to campus this past summer. Billed as a Grand Reunion Celebration, the August 6 event gathered together former students from the classes 1975-77, 1980-82, 1985-87, 1990-92, 1995-97, 2000-02, 2005-07, and 2010-12.

The feeling of community was palpable throughout the night. But, more than anything else, it was so great to see our Spartans in person again.

The party started at Carondelet with food, fellowship, and selfguided tours of both campuses. It then moved to De La Salle for drinks and dancing in the Quad. However, it was Tainted Love (featuring our very own De La Salle alumnus Bray Gurnari ’90), that truly highlighted the evening. Thank you to everyone who came and danced the night away with us!

As we begin planning for the summer of 2023, we want to gather your feedback. We received rave reviews for the format of the 2022 Grand Reunion, however, we know some classes would still prefer to gather individually. What does your class want? Let your voice be heard and get involved in planning the next reunion! Contact Director of Alumni Relations, Tim Robert at 925.288.8171 or robertst@dlshs.org.

Water Polo and Cross Country Affinity Events

The first few weeks of fall are always exciting with new faces and lots of energy on campus. It also marks the kickoff of our Alumni calendar of events. On Saturday, August 20 we hosted both our annual alumni cross country run and our annual alumni water polo match. Former students young and…not-so-young, showed up early in the morning ready to hit the trail at Heather Farm Park. More than 20 alumni, spanning five decades, ran the 2-mile course in world record time. Their combined top-7 runners recorded a time that was just ahead of our 2022 Cross Country Team, securing a victory for the ages. Following the run, several alumni gathered for a hosted pizza reception to talk about all things De La Salle.

That same afternoon, alumni took to the water at the Brother Jerome West pool in what turned out to be an epic battle. The match ended in an 18-18 tie, with the victory going to the alumni following a shootout. Afterward, a full squad of alumni, including spouses, children, and former parents, enjoyed pizza and refreshments on the pool deck, toured the campus, and regaled current students with stories about the hard work that is needed to build a top-ranked water polo and aquatics program.

This was a great start to the alumni events calendar. Look for more Affinity Events this coming winter.

CLASS OF 2022

De La Salle Athletics Hall Fame

Kevin Bacharach ’03 excelled in the water for both the De La Salle water polo and swimming teams from 1999-2003. Kevin was a three-time All-American in swimming and helped the Spartans to the 2003 North Coast Section (NCS) team championship when he anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay team to the event title. In water polo, Kevin was a second-team All-American and the Contra CostaTimes Player of the Year in 2002, helping the Spartans win their third straight NCS championship.

Atari Callen ’99 had an outstanding career on the De La Salle football field and on the track. As a football player, Atari collected 3,806 rushing yards and 70 touchdowns, to go along with 180 tackles and four interceptions in his three years. Atari helped the Spartans collect three NCS Championships from 1996-98, and was the lead running back on De La Salle’s 1998 squad that defeated Mater Dei for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championship game, which resulted in the school being named the USAToday National Champions that year. He was also the Northern California Player of the Year, a PrepStar All-American, and was named to the Cal-Texas Shrine All-Star game following his senior season. In track, Atari is just one of two athletes to win the 100-meter event at the NCS Meet of Champions three times and was a two-time state finalist in the same event. These days Atari is racking up wins coaching high school football in Idaho, and is recognized for his civil rights work by the city of Pocatello.

A.J. Kuhle ’00 was a three-year varsity letterwinner in basketball, helping De La Salle capture NCS championships in 1999 and 2000. As a team captain of the 1999-2000 squad, A.J. helped De La Salle defeat Jesuit for the NorCal Division I State title, then the Spartans defeated Clovis West, 47-46, to win the CIF Division I State Basketball Championship. After De La Salle, A.J. played four years at the Air Force Academy, three years as a starter, where he helped the Falcons to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. Today A.J. embodies the spirit of his Lasallian high school education through his work at ACE Scholarships, which seeks to expand educational opportunities for low-income students in grades K-12.

Chase Wheeler ’09 was selected as the 2009 De La Salle Athlete of the Year after starring on both the track & field and football teams. During the 2008-09 school year, Chase won an individual state track and field championship in the long jump with a distance of 25.02.25 feet. On the football field, the wide receiver and defensive back helped the Spartan football team post a 13-0 record in 2007 and a 12-2 record in 2008, capturing back-to-back NCS championships. Now Chase is leveraging his experience as a biotech and cancer researcher to provide (through his company Whealthy Performance) free education to individuals looking to prioritize their health.

Join Us at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on October 23!

It’s not too late to attend De La Salle’s prestigious Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday, October 23. Adult tickets cost just $40 and can be purchased at dlshs.org/hall-of-fame. This is your opportunity to honor and meet some of De La Salle’s greatest athletes and coaches across a variety of sports programs.

Chris Wondolowski ’01 was a two-time Bay Valley Athletic League First-Team selection in 2000 and 2001 for the De La Salle varsity soccer team. During his senior season, he helped the Spartans capture the NCS Championship, and was named the 2001 BVAL, NCS, and Contra Costa Times Player of the Year. Chris also helped the track and field team to a BVAL Championship in 2001, running in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races. After four years at Chico State, where he was a Division II All-American in 2003, Chris enjoyed a 17-year career in Major League Soccer (MLS), playing for the San Jose Earthquakes (2005, 2009-21) and the Houston Dynamo (2006-09). A five-time MLS All-Star, two-time MLS Cup Champion, two-time Golden Boot award winner, and league MVP in 2012, Chris ended his professional career in 2021 as the league’s all-time leading goal scorer with 171 goals. From 2011-16, Chris made 35 appearances as a member of the United States Men’s National Soccer Team. He was also a member of Team USA for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Off the pitch, Chris has used soccer as a tool for social change. He was the first American soccer player to donate a portion of his salary to the Common Goal movement and is an ambassador for both Soccer Streets USA and the Nike N7 Fund.

Rugby Players Excel at De La Salle

Like many sports at De La Salle High School, the school’s rugby program has continued to build success over the last several years. In the spring of 2022, the varsity rugby team finished No. 1 in the country after posting a 10-0 record and winning the California Single School and the Northern California Premier Club championships.

The growth under current head coach Derek Holmberg is also expanding to the national level. Current players Tommy Rainsford ‘23 and Lucas Meranda ‘24, as well as recent graduate Dominic Besag ‘22, were all members of the USA Rugby program this past summer.

Tommy and Dominic played for the USA Rugby U18 team in the Corendon Summer Series in Amsterdam, while Lucas played on the U16 squad. However, to compete at this level, players and their families must be committed to the process. “These guys are from families that are really involved in rugby,” said Holmberg. “They understand and appreciate the culture and are willing to make the sacrifices to get on the national level.”

For De La Salle student Tommy Rainsford, his journey to the USA Rugby squad took off after the Spartans defeated Torrey Pines (52-24) in the California Single School Championship game. Tommy raised enough eyebrows at that game, that he was invited to play in tournaments in San Diego and Texas. Following further evaluation from the USA Rugby administration, he was invited to join the team on an international stage. Tommy accepted the invitation and, along with former Spartans’ teammate Dominic Besag, the U18 USA Rugby team posted a 3-0 record against Belgium, Canada, and the Netherlands. “I’ve never experienced anything like that before,” reflects Tommy. “Not a lot of people say they got to do it. It’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever done.”

The accomplishment for Tommy is the result of hard work and dedication, both on and off the field. Tommy credits De La Salle with supporting his dreams and future, “De La Salle makes you work harder than everyone else. Because we’ve never experienced anything like that, you know what to expect from yourself. And you know what level you have to go to get where you are.”

ANNUAL HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

Fiscal Year 2021-22

De La Salle Endowments and Named Funds

Fundraising is a priority for De La Salle High School as it complements our mission, serving all students, and our annual operational needs. Supporting the school’s annual fundraising efforts is vital to the financial health, growth, and future of the school and puts our students first by serving school priorities such as: making tuition assistance possible for families with varying levels of need, providing tools and training for our faculty and staff through professional development, and facilitating a wide array of co-curricular programs so that all students have the opportunity for activity, leadership, and expression outside of the classroom. Thank you to all of our donors for putting our students first!

Endowments are the financial foundation of a school. Rather than used for immediate needs, endowed funds are invested. The earnings on these investments then provide a stable, ongoing source of funds for scholarships, operations, and other areas of campus life where there is a need. The goal of an endowment is to use enough earnings to accomplish the purpose for which the endowment was created, while retaining a portion to allow for growth and future use. Endowments and Named Funds are established with a minimum $50,000 gift.

The De La Salle Alumni Association continues to build on efforts to educate alumni on the various funding initiatives of the school. Many are surprised to learn that tuition does not cover the full cost to educate a student throughout the school year. More and more alumni “come back to De La Salle” by answering the call to support the Annual Fund for the benefit all students. We cannot thank our alumni enough for staying involved with our school.

Alumni Parents, Grandparents, and Friends

Gifts from parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends are gratefully received as an indication of De La Salle’s powerful effect on the lives of former students years after they have graduated. We continue to receive support from parents of graduates, as well as friends of the school, who began their association with De La Salle decades ago.

Our Thoughts and Prayers are with the Owens Family De La Salle High School recently learned of the passing of siblings Sean Owens ‘77, Patrick Owens ‘78, and Terrance (Terry) Owens ‘80. Sean, Pat, and Terry were the sons of Owen Owens, the individual after whom the school’s football field is named. The school was saddened to learn of the passing of three members of the Owens family in less than two years, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Owens family on their recent losses.

Continuing the Owens legacy are family members Lois Owens (mother), and brothers Owen Owens Jr. ’74. Kevin Owens ‘82, and Shannon Owens ’87, and sisters Maureen Owens (CHS ‘75) and Megan (Owens) Baker (CHS ’84).
