College, the only HBCU on the list, is among 19 exemplary institutions, identified from a field of 1,700 U.S. institutions, in terms of percentage of Pell enrollment (access), net price (affordability), and graduation rates (success). This means we hit favorable marks on all three ratings.

What an exciting and invigorating time for the College as we await the arrival of our new and returning students with high expectations for another productive year! Our theme for this year is Tougaloo College... Leading the Change. In keeping with our strong legacy of empowering our students to effect change, this is an opportune time to more intentionally engage our students, alumni, and friends in advancing our legacy to lead the change. As we become more immersed in today’s globalized economy, Tougaloo is leading the change to broaden educational opportunities for our students. I recently returned from China to formalize the HBCU-Chinese Collaboration, establishing partnerships between HBCUs and Chinese universities. Tougaloo is one of eight HBCUs to comprise the inaugural group for this historic collaboration. This is an amazing opportunity for our young people to become more familiar with the history, culture, and language of China. We want to provide our students with the broadest exposure as we prepare them for global leadership and service. We are working to establish student exchange partnerships in Greece, Turkey, and Brazil. In this age of greater accountability and questions about college cost and value, we are leading the change to demonstrate how to be effective, efficient, and net excellent student outcomes. We were recently selected by University Research and Review, LLC as a “Best Value College,” and a representative from the organization visited me in my office recently to present this award. The Center for Higher Education Reform issued a recent report on the President’s Rating Scale: How American Colleges Might Fare. Tougaloo College is among 19 exemplary institutions, identified from a field of 1,700 U.S. institutions, using the metrics of access, affordability, and success. The Educate to Career (ETC) College Rankings Index recently ranked Tougaloo College #23 out of 1222 U.S. institutions included in the rankings for best economic value. This new ranking system shows the economic valued added with a degree, based on the socio-economic status of students at the time of college entrance, cost of college and earning outcomes of the students when they enter the labor market. These newest rankings amplify the Tougaloo story we all know. Whatever period in its history, Tougaloo has been distinguished as an institution with academic, social, and economic value. A Tougaloo education is any student’s passport to success. We are leading the change to provide access and success to students who will comprise the workforce of the future, but are often denied opportunity for myriad of reasons. Their lives are transformed in our supportive and engaging learning environment. One of our high achieving students, Alex Ortiz, the son of undocumented immigrants, comes to my mind. When Alex came to us in the fall 2011, he was ineligible for federal loans due to his status. We accepted him, based on his high school academic record and test scores. He has been an outstanding student, maintaining a 3.83 grade point average and will graduate in May 2015. He has spent a semester exchange at Brown University and completed a summer internship with Congressman Bennie G. Thompson in the Washington, D.C. Office. In a constantly evolving world, we must prepare our students to navigate the changes, exposing them to leading edge, learning opportunities – equipping them to build a better, more inclusive world for all humankind.
