‘STUDENTS LACK IN LIFE SKILLS NOWADAYS’

“C

olleges are focusing a lot on enhancing academic skills of students. However, students lack in the most important skills i.e. life skills. We are working with campuses across the country to built programmes that help in nurturing life skills among students,” says Dr Dhaval Mody, Director, RoundGlass College Wellbeing. “Nowadays, colleges are talking about three things: Admissions, Placements, and Retention of students. When Colleges talk about admissions, they emphasise on how their curriculum is different and the infrastructure they are providing to the students,” he added. Dr Mody suggested that the institutes are needed to focus on things that may help students to be successful in life. He stated, “Placements has been a big thing when it comes to higher education institutes. The colleges are striving hard to get their students placed in the reputed organisations. But the industry requirements are very different and colleges are required to bridge that gap. We have collaborated with various colleges in all the aforesaid domains working for the mental health and well being of the students.” He also described about the programme offered by his organisation. According to him, “Our programme has two modules: one is on campus and the other one is online. In today’s scenario, we are into so many things that we forget to be happy. Nowadays, students don’t feel happy despite having various facilities whereas earlier students

used to study under street lamps and also used to find happiness in that.” Describing about the kind of pressure students are facing in real life, Dr Mody said, “If a student forgets his/her Wi-Fi password, he/she becomes depressed. There are a lot of things that cause stress among students.” He also described about the efforts made by his organisation in this regard. Revealed, “We build communities on campuses that provide safe zone for students to talk about mental health and a platform to reach out for support in times of need. The online solution also provides a habit formation platform enabling students to take charge of their well-being by forming healthy habits and overcoming those they face difficulties with. The idea is to bring a cultural shift towards approach for mental health and well-being and make youth more proactive to it.”

INNOVATIONS PAVING WAY FOR QUALITY HIGHER EDUCATION IN RAJASTHAN Our priority is to make youth employable and to make the college campuses conducive for the holistic development of the students. Keeping this in focus many entrepreneurship and skill development programs are now being started and some of them are underway in colleges, says Bhanwar Singh Bhati, Minister for Higher Education, Government of Rajasthan, in conversation with Kartik Sharma of Elets News Network (ENN). What has been your top most priority as Minister of Higher Education? Our priority is the holistic development of the students. We want the State Higher Education to reach the level where it can match the Global standards. We want our students to grow in an environment where they can become job oriented and are capable of getting jobs globally. The Government is endeavouring in this direction through its scheme and programmes for students so that they can get career and job oriented opportunities as employment is the major challenge for the youth. We do not want to create just graduates or postgraduates; in fact, we want skillful graduates and postgraduates who can sustain in the fastchanging global world and economy.

What policies and new initiatives have been undertaken by the Government in the last 6-7 months? Our priority is to make youth employable, and to make the environment conducive for the holistic development of the students. Keeping this in focus, many entrepreneurship and skill development programmes are now being started and some of them are in progress in colleges. What specific has been done for the betterment of the education ecosystem? Our Government is dedicated towards improving the quality of higher education, its development and creating a healthy educational environment in the State. In a departure from the protocol, we have decided to decentralise the entire process of brainstorming for development plans and creating them. For this, CM Ashok Gehlot had announced the Resource Assistance and College with Excellence (RACE) for all the colleges. Under this, one college from each district has been nominated as ‘nodal’ and a total of 33 district resource aid committees have been formulated. Through this initiative, we are promoting the process of resource redistribution in the state education system and kick-starting a new chapter of development of the colleges. Besides, for the first time, we are going to conduct the annual auditing of all the

government colleges under Annual Auditing Programme, which was again announced in the budget speech by the Chief Minister. This initiative would be a great tool in monitoring the performance and development of the colleges.

Technology is taking over education in a grand manner. What are the technological initiatives in pipeline that can empower the weaker section? We are going to start an online 24*7 Quick Response System (QRS) scheme to answer the queries of the students on a real-time basis. It is specifically been created for the students who belong to the weaker section of the society and cannot afford to attend expensive coaching classes. Besides, an application has been created for the Universities through which helpline facility for students, monitoring the academic & extracurricular activities of universities, the transmission of orders, and overseeing the work of district resource committees. We are heavily focusing on imparting employment-related training to students while they are still studying. For this, we have collaborated with Rajasthan Skill and Livelihood Development Corporation (RSLDC). Under this, we will be rendering 34 regular courses for skill development in selected government colleges. 25 Language Labs are being planned to be established in the selected government colleges to help students in grasping the requisite language skills for acquiring jobs in the future.

LEADER’S PERSPECTIVE

We have initiated the process of making college campuses secure, safe and free for the girl students. Girls mentoring cells and internal complaint committee have been set up so that our daughters feel safe and secure when they are away from home. Many programs are organised by our colleges to train girls in self defence. To promote education in the State, Government has opened 45 new colleges and now we can boast that not a single subdivision in the state is without a college. This shows our determination towards making education accessible to all. To encourage physically challenged students, our Chief Minister has announced higher education scholarship which is a valuable contribution and help to the students.

You have to have a big vision and take very small steps to realize that vision. These little steps and innovations that the government has taken in last few months will help in creating something large and better.

BILLIMORIA HIGH SCHOOL RAISING RESPONSIBLE GLOBAL CITIZENS At BHS we are a family. Teachers take on the role of parents and fellow students are like siblings. Sports at the State and National Level: Football, Basketball, Cricket, Karate, Rifle Shooting, Fencing, Archery, Chess, Carrom, Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Cricket, Capoeira

A good school must have good student-teacher coordination, what methods are followed at Billimoria High School to maintain the same?

Aditi Goradia

Managing Director, Billimoria High School (BHS), Panchgani

What strategies does Billimoria High School follow for innovation and reforms in its administrative system? At Billimoria High School it is all about progress through collaboration. We firmly believe that each member of our team right from the management to the academic teachers to the support staff and even our parents have a role to play in the growth and learning of our children. A strict hierarchy and bureaucracy can often be a hindrance. And we rather prefer a process of mutual respect and open communication. In terms of management through technology, our Milgrasp App is an excellent resource to ensure that everything remains on track.

In order to maintain a good learning environment, what activities along with study are conducted at the Billimoria High School? We believe that the purpose of education is to help our children find themselves. Who they are? What they enjoy and what they are good at? Our children are encouraged to participate in every activity. In order to provide a holistic education, our activities include:

The key to collaborative learning is a healthy relationship between teachers and students. Being a residential school, most of our team and students reside on campus. This makes us family. We eat all of our meals together. Teachers here are like surrogate parents and the care of the child carries out way beyond the classroom.

How does the school develop a curriculum that is interesting as well as focuses on the holistic development of children at your school? Our experiential learning initiatives such as our “Week Without Walls” and the Leadership Program are just some of the ways that we bring our curriculum to life.

How does the school meet expectations of parents and requisite Government standards simultaneously? The success of a child depends heavily on how well the school and the parents are aligned in philosophy. A School’s role is to do all that is necessary to help every child gain the confidence and skill set to face the challenges of the world. Be it the expectations of family members or the generic requirements of exams. Albeit, we find that parents today are beginning to see the need for value education as opposed to numbers and percentages. The CBSE Board as well is working rigorously towards finding a balance in curriculum and assessment that will ensure a better future for our children.

IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATING GEN Z: A GLOBAL

SPECIAL STORY

PERSPECTIVE The next generation of students thinks, behaves and learns differently as they have been born and raised in the technology-immersed environment. Thus, it becomes significant for the educators to focus on creating student-centric curricula to cater to the interests and preferences of Gen Z learners and involving them as active participants, writes Rumani Arora of Elets News Network (ENN).

D

o you remember a 2014 advertisement where a newborn baby cuts his umbilical cord on his own, seconds after coming out of his mother’s womb, simply by learning it from the Internet? No matter how exaggerated it came across then, in present times we are metaphorically moving towards that era where children see technology right after they open their eyes in the world. The impact of technology has become so huge and intermediating that our present generation is living and breathing it.

Dubbed as Gen Z, the next generation of students thinks, behave and learn differently, because they have been born and raised in the technology-immersed environment. It will not be inappropriate to say that members of Generation Z are predominantly digital natives.

34

AUGUST 2019

And to educate this league of students effectively, it becomes significant for the educators to focus on creating environments and curricula that are student-centred, matching up to the interests and preferences of Gen Z learners and involving them as active participants. On the whole, technology should be intertwined in such a manner that it becomes an enabler in educating Gen Z. Sharing his views on the same, Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman, Seth M R Jaipuria Schools and Jaipuria Institute of Management, said, “Technology is medium of communication and learning like not an independent skill in today’s world. The use of technology has to be integrated into every subject through things like using the internet as a tool for research, online submissions, online testing, making presentations etc. Educators both teachers and parents need to be comfortable with technology and excited

SPECIAL STORY

not scared of its unlimited potential to leverage technology to the fullest extent”. At present, many collaboration technologies including digital projectors, interactive whiteboards and associated mobile device apps are making it smoother to create engaging and interactive experiences for the students. Chithung Mary Thomas, Secretary, Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, said, “Born in the ecology of technology Gen Zers are technology-fluent digital natives. They are a highly informed lot who are likely to be highly independent and competitive. Learning is fully self-directed and autonomous to highlight their best talents. Investments, therefore, ought to be in technology so that experiences are seamless and integrated. Method of learning should move from structured auditory method to visual hands-on method. Connected classrooms with multiple digital platforms will be the norm to acquire problem-solving skills and peer-to-peer learning”. Interestingly, Gen Z learners don’t see technology as a tool; they see it as a regular part of life. And this phenomenon can be leveraged by the educators to cater to the ever-changing educational needs of students. Speaking on the topic, Ryan Pinto, CEO, Ryan International Group of Institution, underlined the ever-growing role of technology and shared how Ryan Group is recognising technology as a regular part of Gen Z’s lives - as well as the world they live in. “Smartboards and video in classroom are widespread. Flipped classrooms are used in secondary and high school. We have Computer labs in all our schools. BYOD - Bring Your Own Device - is a practice encouraged where appropriate. Parents are kept abreast of school progress, assignments and report cards using the Ryan

Parent App. Partnerships with Plato (personalised learning app) and Tata Class Edge promise much in terms of teacher support and content management. We have also collaborated with leaders in the tech space like Microsoft and Google to implement ed-tech solutions to enhance learning outcomes,” he shared. However, we must not overlook the fact that there are certain disadvantages of overuse of technology. Generation Z finds it more challenging to pay attention for long periods due to constant technology use. Thus, the role of educators becomes crucial in terms of dealing with the issue while also preparing students to use technology in the real world. Sharing her view on this, Sneha Rathor, CEO Academics & Innovations, Sanfort Group of Schools, said, “Don’t take away or restrict technology from generation Z but enable them with the right kind of technology as it is a crucial part of their life. Raising a tech generation it becomes important for the educators also to make technology as an important part of education, as it enables bagless and research-based learning. Moreover introducing technology with the right amount of screen time in the early years also helps in developing hand and eye coordination, increased retention power and language skills”. There are some simple steps that educators can take at their disposal such as – use technology to make learning more personal, teach digital natives to use technology responsibly, encourage students to take initiatives in their own learning and promote social skills, which can aid iGen learners to get the best of both technology and education. Teachers must increase cooperative learning in their classrooms while also preparing students for their futures by promoting social skills they may need for their careers.

POLICYMAKER’S PERSPECTIVE

AICTE: REVISING CURRICULUM IN TUNE WITH CHANGING TECHNOLOGIES AICTE has revised the technical and higher education curriculum by involving experts from academia and industry. In the new curriculum, new areas like Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Block Chain, Robotics, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, etc have also been incorporated, says Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE) in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). experiments. What are AICTE’s plans in this regard? Learning through experiments or experiential learning is very important, not only in technical education but in every field. Earlier, the emphasis was not there but the New Education Policy talks about it in a significant manner. Experiential learning is not a new concept. From Gurukul system of old times and from ancient universities, it has been retracted back in the modern era to experience the real time challenges in any sector. If we talk about Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, people visit a village and experience the problems and try to solve them. Similarly, internship in any industry helps students in observing what exactly happens there and learn outside of classroom through variety of activities. Under Such programmes, students experience a phenomenon and learn from it. This is what has been promoted in the New Education Policy.

Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe

Chairman, All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE)

For teachers, it is challenging to update themselves in tune with the changing technologies, how AICTE is helping them to overcome the same? AICTE has revised its curriculum by involving experts from academia and industry. Once the curriculum is revised, new areas like Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Machine Learning, Digital technologies, Cloud Computing, Block Chain, Robotics, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Data Analytics have been incorporated into it. The new curriculum will also help teachers to update with latest skills and inculcate new traits. There are two ways to do it, first that we run courses and where faculty can come and get themselves abreast with the new knowledge. Second, through our Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform; it will help faculty to learn from the comfort of their homes. It is also significant to create a habit of constant,

continuous learning – lifelong learning. This is what we want to bring in our faculty.

How incubators are encouraging student for entrepreneurship? What is the role of AICTE in it? Incubators were earlier considered as different entity, where people from outside the academic institutes were ready to help in developing entrepreneurship and start-ups. But today, large number of incubators has come into existence in the Universities and Institutes. AICTE’s role is how to promote entrepreneurship while students are graduating, not after completing their course. We have instructed institutes to encourage their students for the courses that will empower them to be entrepreneurs. And also create incubators, accelerators and support system in terms of entrepreneurship cell, innovation cell where students will start working right from their first year. So by the time they will graduate, instead of seeking jobs, they will be able to create jobs for others.

With fresh graduates lacking the relevant practical knowledge, how does the curriculum can be corrected for more exposure and industry engagement? Mandatory industry training during a course

will allow students to experience the industry life during their graduation. So, it is either three summer vacations of two months each or it will be one full semester where they will go to industry and learn those practices. Moreover, the industry problems given by industry for the students’ projects in their undergraduate studies will also be helpful. All this will nurture capable practical engineers in the future.

What message would you like to give to our youth?? Many a time’s people think that demand for engineers is declining. But, I am giving assurance that world is so large and there are ample opportunities present. Because engineering education is one where you methodically study physics, chemistry and math on one side, lot of hands on wherein you learn many things – experiments, critical thinking, analytical ability, mathematical ability which will help in any domain you go outside later. Secondly, India due to its demographic dividend, the entire world which is aging, there are enough opportunities for jobs not only in India but the rest of the world. Within the country, whether it is Skill India, Make in India, Swachh Bharat, Digital India or Unnat Bharat Abhiyan; every activity of the Government has potential for engineers to play an important role.

POLICYMAKER’S PERSPECTIVE

CBSE: COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION The main objective of the Central Board of Education (CBSE) is to serve the educational institutions effectively and to be responsive to the educational needs of those students, says Dr Biswajit Saha, Director (Training & Skill Education), CBSE, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

In line with Government’s vision of skilling the Indian youth, what initiatives have been undertaken by the CBSE? The CBSE has tried to include various skill-oriented subjects in its curriculum both at secondary and senior secondary level. In class ninth and tenth, we are offering 17 skill-oriented courses catering to the requirements of all sectors. Similarly at Senior Secondary level, CBSE is offering 43 courses ranging from Artificial Intelligence to early childhood education, yoga, retail, tourism, media etc. We have tried to cover all the areas such as engineering, healthcare, banking and finance along with others through these courses. Out of 21,000 schools affiliated to CBSE, 8,000 schools are imparting skill-oriented education and training with enrollment of around seven lakh students so far. It is also important that higher education sector must encourage the skill training among its students as there are still visible gaps between Industry and Academia despite the efforts of Union and State Government. Government is also aiming to develop the schools as Skill Development Centres as their excellent infrastructure is underutilised after two pm. It will boost the skill training, community service and social empowerment. Such training will also support in nurturing globally competitive citizens who will be ready to work in any country of the world. Ultimately the quality education and effective skill training help in India’s economic development.

With New Education Policy (NEP) likely to release in few months, how is CBSE improving its guidelines to be in line with the needs of two most important stakeholders i.e. teachers and students? The New Education Policy is still at draft stage. There are so many components in it that are really encouraging but at the same time we are also raising our concerns about school education. As far as promoting skill education and vocational training in schools is concerned, the NEP is focusing on the same in a good way. To impart quality education in schools,

CBSE is emphasising on category-wise teachers’ training. With the help of good teachers, we are now trying to convert classrooms into learning spaces. In this regard, CBSE has so far established 16 Centres of Excellence across the country. With these centres, we are conducting various workshops and seminars on teachers’ training. Moreover, under the guidance of our Chairperson Anita Karwal, we have developed several manuals for principals, school management, officials and other staff. We are targeting for holistic development in schools and that’s why several initiatives have been taken by the CBSE in this regard. Changing the school ecosystem regularly is not a solution rather we are eyeing for that one change which is sustainable. In line with this, we are encouraging development of 21st century skills like collaborations, creativity, and problem solving along enhancing academic skills. Not only the new policy but also the previous initiatives like National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 are very helpful for improving the quality of education. NCF 2005 is so apt that if principals and teachers follow it, the education sector will

automatically witness a positive momentum.

How do you think the technology is helping students in improving their learning outcomes and teachers in their knowledge delivery methodologies? Technology was a key player in educations; it is a key player and it will remain a key player. The context may change but technology’s role will remain the same. Starting from industry to school space, it has a very effective role. We require more orientation programmes for teachers as students are already well versed with the technology. It is so as the teachers’ role is very crucial. As in the present scenario, teachers need to be more tech savvy and for the same content, a more innovative lecture methodology is required. It will facilitate real learning. So, implementing technology is not the only solution rather setting the context, customisation and student-centric learning is also required. Teachers are nowadays

needed to be psychological experts as it will help them to understand students’ needs. Teachers must go through technological innovations in the changed situation as it will help them enhance their domain knowledge as well.

How does the recently announced budget likely to boost the Indian education landscape?? Budget is very important for a nation’s development and it also gives hope. Year-byyear, the Government is increasing its focus on education sector and bringing positive reforms. The initiatives announced in Union Budget 201920 like National Research Foundation, skilling, and teachers’ training etc will cause positive momentum in Indian education landscape. The Union Budget 2019-20 will also help the State Governments, Entrepreneurs and Eduentrepreneurs to frame their strategies in a way that provides a positive growth to Indian education.

POLICYMAKER’S PERSPECTIVE

NCERT: PAVING WAY FOR ONE NATION - ONE SYLLABUS CONCEPT The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is the apex resource organisation to assist and advice the Central and State Governments in the formulation and implementation of their policies and programmes in the field of education, particularly school education and teachers’ training, says Major Harsh Kumar, Secretary, NCERT, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). NCERT has completed more than 50 Years of “Leading the Change” in Indian education, what are the major achievements of the educational body in the last five decades? If you ask about the achievements of NCERT, one can see that in the entire country, NCERT books are being read in order to maintain standards of education. Since education is on the concurrent list, it is not a compulsive thing. Today, 28 States follow NCERT curriculum subject to the changes as per their requirement. We are trying for “One Nation One Syllabus” concept though we have different boards with different policies but this is presently a guideline only by NCERT but not a compulsion. Besides, NCERT is conducting NAS (National Achievement Survey) after preparing a document on learning outcomes. The document describes about what a child should learn at a particular stage and what should be the outcome of that. On basis of that, we have been able to find out the gaps and it will be helpful in formulating the New Education Policy (NEP).

How the emergence of technology is helpful in developing a futuristic and compulsive curriculum? If you visit our website, you will see CIET – where you can find digitalise books – the methods which are available for students free of cost. We also have apps which are rated as one of the best ones. We are moving on the aspect of digitalising the things. We have also developed tactile books for differently-abled children.

Government is going to release the New Education Policy (NEP) soon, what’s the role of NCERT in improving its guidelines? NCERT is working in the field of education particularly school education and teachers’ training and also supporting Central and

State Governments in formulation and implementation of their policies and initiatives in the field of education. The NEP document has details about teachers’ education and teachers’ training and where we stand today. We have got our Regional Institute of Education (RIE) where we impart teacher education. We have got five demonstrative multipurpose schools also. NCERT is imparting primary to a professional level training for BEd and Med degrees. We are the premier institute of training the teachers. The teachers trained from RIE are in high demand.

In most of the Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs), one will find the students of RIE as teachers. There’s even a proposal that it should be encouraged across the country and very soon, we are going to come up with the new RIE at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. Encouraging teachers’ training will definitely improve quality of education in the country. NCERT also provide pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher education. We keep on conducting workshops for teachers who are currently in service.

What are the challenges NCERT faces in aligning its different Constituents & Departments to facilitate the smooth operation of its Programmes?

NCERT endeavours to make school education learner-centric and student-friendly, how well it has fared so far and what is the roadmap ahead?

What message would you like to the teachers and students digitalLEARNING platform?

It has fared very well so far. This year we are publishing around six crore textbooks. There is a massive increase in the publication of these books. 28 states are recommending our books. Even the Kendriya Vidyalayas abroad recommend our content. Foreign countries are referring our content and books. It is methodical order on which it is based. That’s why people prefer NCERT books. It starts with the basics. When you see the books you will find the difference how it is has been explained. We have got a channel on SWAYAM platform where the programme is run for the students. The Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) at Delhi is digitalizing the content by NCERT. We have got all our content online, free of cost.

For teachers – continuous training is required. It’s not that when they are in the service training ends but training is required throughout the service. That is why NCERT is conducting in-service training continuously. We have got a programme – Pindicts, in which teacher find out his/her can own capability that how he/she is faring. It is available online free of cost. For students, not as Secretary of NCERT, but as an individual, I would like to tell students that they have to dream and dream big. They need to endeavour to realise those dreams. And how they can realise is that they should have faith in themselves and not depend on Government machinery. Rather than they should be working independently. Students should dream big and strive to achieve it with their hard work and whatever they believe to do.

SCHOOL EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

AHSEC: COMMITTED TO IMPART GLOBAL LEVEL EDUCATION Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is the apex body for prescribing curricula (scheme of studies), syllabus and courses of instruction for higher secondary stage which may be in a college/higher secondary school, says Kamal Gogoi, Secretary, Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). What new initiatives have been undertaken by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council to make higher education easily accessible to all in the state? The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is the apex body to regulate, supervise and develop the + 2 education (Sr Secondary/Higher Secondary) in the State. Assam is the land of multi cultural and multi lingual communities with people having diversified needs as per their geographical and economical existence. In such a State, through various initiatives listed below, the council is trying to make the education accessible to all: • Recognising the institutions from every corner of the state • Introducing need based subjects • Information are shared through website so that everyone can assess easily • Arranging teacher training program in each and every corner of the state, so that all the teachers can be trained properly • Introduction of Online submission of Registration and Examination Form

Globally many universities/institutes are following innovative practices to improve teaching-learning process. What are the board’s plans to bring the education eco system at par with the world? “As leaders in education, our job is not to control those whom we serve, but to unleash their talent. If innovation is going to be a priority in education, we need to create a culture where trust is the norm,” said George Couros -- A leading Canadian educator in areas of innovative leadership, teaching, and learning. To bring the education eco system at par with the world, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has introduced technology-based elective subjects such as Entrepreneurship Development, Multimedia and Web Technology, Retail Trade, IT/ ITes, and a number of need-based Vocational Subjects. It is difficult for students to understand various concepts due to disconnected facts. Organised information connected with concepts and with tools to visualise the same lead to longterm understanding of what is being taught. Realising the fact,

digital classrooms have been introduced initially in some of the institutions out of 1432 recognized by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council.

How does the New Education policy likely to help Assam in transforming the education sector?? The National Education Policy 2019 is built on the foundational pillars of “Access, Equity, Affordability and Accountability”. For Assam, a major reconfiguration of curricular and pedagogical structure is proposed in school education with Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) as an integral part it. With the proposed structure of 5+3+3+4 curricular and pedagogical structure based on cognitive and socio emotional developmental stages, the schools will be re-organised into school complexes. The Curriculum load of the learners will be also reduced. The burden of curriculum will also be reduced in terms of examination by transforming it into semester system. Students

SCHOOL EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

will get the opportunity to go for deeper understanding that will help them to become more competent. The New Education Policy also aimed to promote active pedagogy that will focus on the development of core capacities, life skills, and 21st century skills.

There is a huge educational gap between rural and an urban area of India, what role does Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is playing to bridge it? To minimise the gap between the education scenario of rural and urban areas, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has organised zonal-level training programmes on teaching pedagogy, different competitions, and tournaments etc. Students and teachers irrespective of either they belong to rural or urban areas are allowed to join it. The selection of teachers has been done with utmost care so that they are selected in equal proportion from urban as well as rural areas. The objective is to develop the homogeneous academic atmosphere across the State. The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council feels proud to announce that the Higher Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges from rural areas also exhibited excellence in final examination with 100% of passing rate.

How does the recently announced budget likely to boost the State’s higher education landscape? At present the Government of Assam has exempted students

from paying admission fee, examination fee of Class X and Class XII. Also the Government is providing free textbooks to the students of Class X and XII. This year budgeted amount seems to be meager than the previous years. It will depend upon utilisation of the last year’s budgeted amount by the State Government.

How do you think the technology is helping students in improving their learning outcomes and teachers in their knowledge delivery methodology? The 21st century is the era of technology. To make the teachinglearning process effective, integration of technology in and outside the classroom is inevitable. Though there is also a fear that the technology would eventually replace the teachers, but the more prevalent view now is that it is a tool which can be applied to enhance conventional teaching rather than replace it. The use of technology helps in • Enhancing the literacy rate • Restructuring teaching methods keeping in view the objective of learning • Teachers in showcasing the content distinctly and students can develop skills essential for the 21st century. Online courses, teaching aids, different educational softwares, social networking tools, and other emerging technologies help the teachers as well as students to become more competent. Open Educational Resources [OER] help teachers as well as learners to become competent.

SCHOOL EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

BOSEM TAKING MODERN EDUCATION IN ITS STRIDE The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, is the apex school education regulatory body in the State. With 786 high and higher secondary schools (226 Government, 103 Government aided and 457 Private), BOSEM also takes care of conducting examination and conditions for granting recognition, says Dr Chithung Mary Thomas, Secretary, Board of Secondary Education, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

“ Technology is now indispensable and therefore it has become imperative to stress tech based curriculum right from childhood in letter and in spirit.

” 46

AUGUST 2019

What are your expectations from the “National Education Policy” with regards to the meeting the educational requirements of North East, especially Manipur? The draft National Education Policy 2019 can be viewed as highly futuristic (and technology-driven) which merits justification considering the rapid technological advancements made in recent years. The challenge lie in assimilating the policy in view of the disparities and developmental gaps between the different regions across the country in terms of physical, technological, social and manpower infrastructure. The North Eastern States of India have lagged behind in all development indices. It is only recently that concerted development efforts have trickled in with the initiatives of the “Act East Policy”. In Manipur, the State Government has taken up such bold steps as amalgamation of non-performing schools which will pave the way for opening new schools categories of such as are in line with the NEP 2019. However, the opening of ‘Special Education Zones’ as cited in the policy contradicts the survival of single schools in remote villages of Manipur. Thrust areas for Manipur would have to be sports, performing arts, vocational skills and crafts, computer & IT.

How do you see the Union Budget 2019-20 as far as education sector is concerned? Do you think allocation of Rs 400 crore for building world class institutions will bring the required change? The overall direction of the budget 2019 seems

Dr Chithung Mary Thomas

Secretary, Board of Secondary Education

progressive for the education sector. Allocations reflect that it is driven by ground realities. The budgetary allocation of Rs 400 crore for building World class institutions is encouraging. World class institution however, is not solely dependent on finance but also on the understanding, inspiration, motivation and quality of all the stakeholders involved in education. I strongly feel that standards of schools at K-12 level should be emphasised. Unless done so, big universities may not be able to stand on the loose soils of a weak elementary & secondary level education.

What is your outlook towards the emergence of technology in education?

[ dl.eletsonline.com ] The Largest Portal on Innovation in Education in Asia and the Middle East

Technological advancements in the recent past have been explosive and irreversible. The dismay is that NCF-2005 framed 15 years ago is being followed till date leading to a mismatch in knowledge and curriculum making both obsolete. Technology is now indispensable and therefore it has become imperative to stress tech-based curriculum right from childhood in letter and in spirit.

What makes Board of Secondary Education (BOSEM) stand apart from the rest of the Boards of the country? Any exclusive initiatives have you undertaken that you want to highlight? Established in 1972, the BOSEM develops curriculum and publishes text books up to secondary level in line with NCF and NCERT specifications. The state is a mini-India in all its diversity. 13 tribal dialects have been introduced in the curriculum as first language. To enhance academic values of the rich and varied culture of the state Thang Ta (local martial art), Eshei Nongmai (Music), Manipur Jagoi (dance) and Fine Arts are also introduced. BOSEM has been one of the first boards in the North Eastern States to have introduced computerised codification of answer scripts in 2014, Bar code and OMR based evaluation since

2016. Since 2018, all records of students have been logged with National Security Depository Limited and Database Management Ltd (NDML) for online availability of students’ degrees, diplomas, certificates mark sheets etc. The first among the NE States to be integrated with DigiLocker under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is under process.

How content are you with the BOSEM 2019 result of HSLC and SSLC? The result of HSLC 2019 has recorded the highest pass percentage since its inception in 1972. Examination reforms like conversion of all examination centres into Board centres, Bar coding in answer scripts, multi level coding, live monitoring of evaluation were successfully implemented. Government schools showed marked improvement both in terms of student enrolment and pass percentage which can be attributed to the “School Fagathansi Mission” initiated by the Govt. of Manipur. It aims at overall improvement of government schools in terms of physical and manpower insfrastructural gaps. Another initiative is ‘Lairik Tamhallasi Mission” (No child left behind). This is aimed to bring ‘out of school children’ within age group of 15-18 yrs back to the formal school system. With the co-ordinated efforts from the fraternity of Education and with the implementation of the NEP, 2019, I hope that the challenges will be overcome so that the objective of education is achieved.

where Chitkara Univeristy participated as a competitor from India along with China and United Kingdom. While only a select group of 17 teams from these three nations got to participate in this highprofile event, Chitkara University could send four teams, in association with the public facility, Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC). Ingenuity 2018 Innovation Challenge has several tiers of winners. Out of the 17 teams, only top 10 teams got an Exclusive International Pass for having swift business establishment with local government support in China and in the UK. The top 6 among them will be co-founded in India, China and the UK. Two teams from Chitkara Univeristy, could make it to this category. Chitkara University’s project, a farm engineering start-up called MOKSH bagged the First position and a Gold medal among all 17 International projects. The winning USP of MOKSH was the global importance of an innovative idea that simplifies the life of a farmer’s post-harvest and helps them earn more from crop waste. MOKSH is headed by its Founder Dr. Nitin Saluja, an entrepreneur from the Chitkara Innovation Incubator, Chandigarh. The second winning project from Chitkara University was DAT, an incubated company which makes Braille Education for the blind easy across the globe. It was declared as the ‘Best International Project’ at the event. They won 10,000 UK pounds by Hayden Green Foundation, UK. E-Braille Slate is a project devised by DAT for making education for the blind painless and comfortable. The project, under the supervision of Chitkara University Centre for Research and Innovation (CURIN), has a high international relevance as it addresses millions of people with blindness. This project was especially applauded by the Jury and the present audience. Such achievements by students of Chitkara University can be traced back to the passion of its founders. The University has been founded by Dr. Ashok K Chitkara and Dr. Madhu Chitkara who have been passionate teachers for more than 40 years now. As Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor respectively, they are not just founders but handson leaders at the campus. This continuous support and presence has proven to be a major edge in the field of education and hence the Chitkara Educational Trust.

Scholars Program), Dr. Rao Vemuri (University of California), Dr. Lueny Morell (InnovaHiED, USA), and many more. Chitkara University also promotes the well-being and achievements of school going as well as college going students. It extends the same beyond its own student community too. Recently, Chitkara University in collaboration with RoboChamps, Chhapai.com and RoboGenie, conducted International School Awards, the world’s largest education conference and award show in Dubai. And most interestingly, Chitkara University alumni Akshay Ahuja is the Co-founder of RoboChamps India and RoboGenie. The event witnessed participation from 500 representatives from educational institutions of 20 different countries. A total of 180 schools and educators took home the awards in various categories, which had received over 12,000 nominations. A first-of-its-kind Educational event on a Global scale, International School Awards, served as a platform to brainstorm and recognize excellence, and transformational approaches in the field of education. However, Chitkara’s social interventions for the benefit of its students are most impactful in the start-up sphere. Universities today cannot afford to ignore entrepreneurship development and start-up incubation, given the high momentum start-ups have achieved in India . While most private universities worth their names have started start-up promotion cells, very few have fully operational Incubation Centres. Even for Private Universities with their own Incubation Centres, it is an uphill task for delivering the promised, as unlike degrees and placements; start-ups do not become successful with hard work alone. It calls for brilliant ideas, the right enabling ecosystem and real entrepreneurial brains that can be utilised productively.

EMBIBE: CHANGING THE FACE OF EDUCATION SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE

Free learning content and AI-powered personalised recommendations provided by Embibe help students achieve their best scores, improve question attempt strategy, and time management, says Aditi Avasthi, CEO, Embibe, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). What is the Genesis behind setting up Embibe? Embibe came into being with the aim of democratising education. We wanted to solve the problem of standardised education forced upon students. We wanted to personalise the crucial mentoring and academic guidance needed by every student in India, where even half a mark can define the access to a particular college. Another crucial aspect that Embibe addresses is that it makes every student feel that he/she has equal chances of getting selected in an exam, regardless of their academic background.

With personalised learning as need of the hour, how does Embibe ensure that it addresses the needs of all the students? Embibe’s extensive three-dimensional knowledge graph hosts over 40,000 concepts with seven lakh interconnections. All learning content is available in the form of best of the web videos and question banks, with interactive 3D slideshows and e-books to be featured soon. Embibe leverages a unique mix of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to understand the learning patterns of students and existing knowledge to build on, which is unique to every student. It then accordingly suggests the most effective personalised learning path for every learner to help them achieve real-life goals, regardless of their level of ability, exposure and access.

Along with urban, rural and remote areas of the country also have students with good talent, how is Embibe ensuring equitable access of knowledge with them? Embibe’s system has been optimised to work on low bandwidth Internet and on low-cost devices at scale, as Internet connectivity becomes a concern for students in rural areas of the country. Despite hosting over 19 million students who cumulatively spend 16 million hours on 230 million sessions, Embibe’s system works seamlessly regardless of connectivity, device and geography. The most important benefit for students is that all the content on Embibe and its features including Learn, Practice and Test are free-for-all.

How is Embibe using technologies like analytics and AI to overcome various challenges related to

Indian education domain? What we have seen in India is that education is standardised for all and scores decide the college and future opportunities for a student. But what we have found out using Data Science is that learning style varies for each student. So Embibe employed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to give personalised guidance to every student, ensuring they achieve their academic goals. Embibe’s Knowledge Graph enables students across age groups to connect the dots between concepts. Students can now go back and master a concept from previous years that is affecting their current preparation.

What are some products that Embibe is working on for growth of its presence in educational market? One of the products currently in the pipeline is LEARNUP, which is a complete learning and learning outcomes solution for K-12 students and teachers. It aims to make learning even more immersive and interactive for students using 3D slideshows, videos and real-life scenarios. Another offering is RANKUP, a personalised scoreimprovement programme for aspirants of JEE, NEET and several other competitive exams. RANKUP pinpoints a student’s weaknesses in academic knowledge, test taking skills and behaviour, before giving highly personalised improvement plans and strategies to convert these weaknesses into strengths.

SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE

FUTURISTIC EDU INITIATIVES PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION TO CHILDREN Futuristic Edu Initiatives forayed into the field of education with a one-point agenda of providing world-class education to children to make them globally competitive. Today, with commitment and dedication, the group has redefined education with its progressive concepts, says Narendra Prasad E, Founder and MD, Futuristic Edu Initiatives, Hyderabad, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). What are your expectations from the Government’s new education policy? How will it change the face of the education in India? The present education system is designed as one size fits all specially in primary and secondary schools. In this system students get limited chance to explore their interests in arts, music and sports as the curriculum is rigid. This system gives no freedom for students to choose their interests thus leaving the students to feel bored or uninteresting, which further leads to failure. We think that the students should enjoy learning, which can only happen only if, their interests are aligned with the curriculum, which further improves students self confidence. We believe this helps the student to develop an attitude towards learning, which further enhances the personality of the students and gives him/ her enough courage to tackle any circumstances in life and contribute for society. At undergraduate level, the main focus of the education policy is to make students tested on the theoretical skills and awarded degrees on the marks . We feel that this can easily be obtained by reading prescribed text books and reproducing the same in the form of an answer in semester exams, thus getting a good GPA and recognised as a good engineer/doctor. But, this mere knowledge is not helping the brilliant students in their performance in the industry. We believe that on the job training and hands-on working as a part of curriculum will give more practical approach of the concept to the student. For this to happen, we proposed to bring in Industry experts and professional professors from the renowned University all over the world to come together to redesign the syllabus. Another challenge for many schools in India is that they have to be registered as with state department of education and also at the central department ( specially in case of CBSE ) level creating too many departments to deal with and too

62

AUGUST 2019

much documentation to support this leaving the less time and resources to schools to focus on education. With multiple education departments, there is too much confusion, for example state board says Local Language is compulsory in the list of subjects that are taught to the student, but CBSE says Hindi as compulsory subject to be taught. In such a scenario, I can only imagine a student position, whose parent frequently transfers from one state to another. Another Policy of Government which is quite confusing is that State boards try to cap the maximum fee that can be charged by the schools and the Central Government wants to impose the Right to education Act. It would be very challenging

for the school management to maintain the quality of education in such a scenario. In short, the new education policy should be unified (through the country) flexible, liberal and practical.

We have tied up with Nature Nurture in developing a theme based curriculum, where our children are exposed to education content in various different forms (digital CSS, books, activities, classroom decoration, Theme assemblies, student conferences) and bringing them closer to real life usage of the education content. This is further helping our students in developing multiple intelligences. This year, we have started Hobby clubs like Astronomy club, Photography club, Cookery club, Art club etc and we are a making sure that student participate in at least one such club to explore his/her interests. We have introduced Butterfly fields’ lab as an extension of science lab, which is helping our students to understand complicated science concepts using small experiments. This year, we are proud to announce that we have started a very unique SI Unit (Special Interventions Unit) which is headed by Deputy Head Academic, Senior Psychologist to understand the special needs to slow learning and as a part of the programme we are also engaging a shadow teacher to cater exclusively to slow learners

How are you incorporating the emerging technologies in your existing curriculum? This year we have tied up with mind box for setting up a STEAM lab (Science, Technology, English, Arts, Mathematics Lab ), which is helping us in delivering key subject concepts using digital designing and some of the industry standard software like Coral draw, Photoshop AutoCA, Pro-E, etc. Our students are able to print their digital design using 3D printers and see that their designs come to life. We are also encouraging our students to design online games, and many are willing to participate in the game design championship. We have introduced Robotics to our students, which we helping them to design and code the Robotics and have a plan to send our students to world Robotics challenge in next two year. We have tied up with Wordsworth group to establish

an English lab, which would help our students with communication skills. Our Teachers are using the digital content available in the open source to create custom eBooks, so that our students can learn various concepts in digital platform at their own pace.

What are the challenges that schools face in keeping pace with the present day requirements of education ecosystem? We think that the present Curriculum is too rigid and leaves very less scope to modify, or innovate. We think that the examination system is little out dated as it does not help teachers to implement differentiated learning in the classrooms.

What are your plans regarding the expansion of ‘Futuristic Edu Initiatives’? We are trying to develop a framework, to assess the students’ interests, their learning levels in different subjects and create a student learning profile, and our teachers will be using it to understand students’ progress. Using this student profiling we would like to introduce differentiated learning in the classrooms. We believe that, in future this would help us in customizing the lesson plan to individual student level thus helping the student to make learning easy and enjoyable. We would like to use this framework to develop a digital system to track student progress.

SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE

THE INFINITY SCHOOL EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH EDUCATION The Infinity School is kindled from the belief that every child has an infinite potential which can be harnessed to create infinite possibilities for them. The school follows an evidence-based approach to learning by drawing references from the latest research in the field of education, says Harinder Chhabra, Director, The Infinity School, Greater Noida, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). To manage with the rapidly evolving world, students must be responsive to change and receptive to new ideas, how does The Infinity School maintain such environment for its students? In a rapidly changing world, existing knowledge becomes obsolete at a fast pace. With the rising impact of technology in our lives, job related skills too have started becoming obsolete within a couple of generations. To deal with this, we need to develop students in such a way that they are equipped and efficient at learning any time in their life. “Learning To Learn is the motto which The Infinity School lives by. This approach requires to focus on development of a strong character in students that includes development of grit, perseverance, self-belief and a growth mindset. Our school curriculum and pedagogy revolves around developing these character traits in our children apart from keeping them curious, engaged, creative, happy and compassionate. All of this is achieved through a carefully chosen set of team members who can bring to life this vision of a school that really want to be child centric. Our very small student-teacher ratio also enables individual focus on every child allowing them to connect with every child and work with them at an individual level.

Our classrooms are named Thinkrooms where thinking, questioning, discussing and sharing is the norm. We believe in facilitating learning though inquiry, discovery and discussion rather than just teaching. The processes of equipping our students with independent and structured thinking skills; creative and critical thinking skills; comprehension and communication skills; reasoning, research and analytical skills; self-management; and socio-emotional skills are weaved into our curriculum and pedagogy.

What are the best practices followed by the The Infinity School in its curriculum to nurture lifelong learners? Our curriculum and pedagogical approach have dedicated space and time for developing reading, comprehension and thinking skills as well as character building through a leveled reading program, a structured professional sports program and including robotics and an award winning, internationally patented cognitive thinking program as part of the curriculum and not just clubs.

in sync with the real world and they are better prepared for the challenges of post school years.

What measures are adopted by The Infinity School for active engagement of parents along with teachers for holistic learning amongst its students?

SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE

Though the entire duration of schooling is important for a student, we believe that the preprimary and primary years play the most important part in shaping them and thus we have ensured a maximum student-teacher ratio of 15:1 till Grade five that will allow teachers the time to provide structured individual feedback and a personalized growth path to every child. Learning happens in a continuum and thus our report cards are called Progress and Plan Reports that not just provide a child’s current status of learning. They tell you the starting point too and thus the progress made so far. It also gives a plan of action against each of the areas of concern in discussion with the child. There are so many other things we are doing differently to ensure that we provide high quality personalised education to our students to help them chart out their unique path in life.

The approach school has adopted requires us to in-house our teacher training. The school hired a curriculum and training professional even before the principal was hired. The focus on continuous development of our staff is our topmost agenda and will always remain there. The route school has taken to child centricity passes through employee centricity. In the approach the school has taken, mindset development of parents is not just to be worked on but to be made one of the topmost priorities. School and home environments, value systems and learning approaches need to be in sync with each other and at the school we keep parents engaged in this process by conducting sessions for them on various aspects of learning and parenting at regular intervals. SCHOOL EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

SETH M R JAIPURIA SCHOOLS: NURTURING CHILDREN THE FUTURISTIC WAY Seth M R Jaipuria Schools focuses on nurturing future leaders by imparting quality education to its students, says Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman, Seth M R Jaipuria Schools and Jaipuria Institute of Management, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). Thinking; Commitment; Creativity; Originality; Enthusiasm; Empathy; Values; are some of the values we are committed to. Students always remain at the centre of the teaching-learning process. An academic institute should stand for dreams, building of character & skills, and defining a person’s life. Few years that a student spends with us would ‘shape or break’ that individual, so there is great power and greater responsibility in the hands of the Institute. Similarly, the time a professional spends at the Institute would provide for scaling new heights, surpassing unprecedented horizons and success un-told in spheres un-explored. We take this commitment very seriously, and are leaving no stone un-turned to achieve this.

Kindly elaborate on your teaching pedagogy.

Shreevats Jaipuria

Vice Chairman, Seth M R Jaipuria Schools and Jaipuria Institute of Management

What are the prime objectives of the Seth MR Jaipuria Schools, as a group? We want to make high quality, national level education and training accessible to students and teachers across maximum number of towns and cities of India. We are not limiting ourselves to a few towns and cities, or metropolitan areas. There is both an opportunity and a necessity of taking private school education to smaller towns without compromising quality. We foresee a bulk of growth, as well as requirement for high end education coming from Tier 2 / Tier 3 cities of India.

values

Thirst for learning is what guides all educators at Jaipuria. We want to help create new generation of responsible business and social leaders that will help the world at large be proactive to meet the global challenges of the 21st century and surpass beyond the realms of the ordinary. Learners can be motivated and groomed for leadership by firstly recognising them as leaders, and they are needed to be empowered. We have successfully created a model which is scalable, measurable and replicable on the non-academic side, and basic processes and tools of academics also documented and driven by process. Lessons Plans - We have created detailed lesson plans for each class room period from pre-primary to Class 12 running into hundreds of thousands of pages, which give teachers a quick idea/ roadmap or pedagogy to involve students in learnings for that day. Teacher Training - We are highly focused on teacher training and organise both central and at site training across subject and pedagogy regularly for our teachers. Student Opportunities - Given our scale, we create many opportunities for students to compete with each other across academic, co-curricular and sporting activities at our flagship events. Every year, tens of thousands of students from across our 24 schools take part in a variety of events and activities.

A Group that would want to groom leaders and not Training is a minimalistic action providing student with a skill set or imparting information for a set of actions. The focus should be on overall erudition, value-adds, character definition and transformation. The faculty’s role is that of a facilitator, merely shepherding the students through the valleys of darkness, awakening life’s lessons for catapulting to greatness. The sessions are designed in a manner for the student to contribute in the most substantial manner possible. Experiential learning, workshops, discussions, real-time analysis, research, industry and society interaction, case studies, and experience sharing enables students to form a close-knit diverse and expert group of peers and provide for learning opportunities from all quarters. Therefore, the faculty merely plays the role of the guide- the path is tread-for by the student themselves. SAINT GIRI SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL – SERVING COMMUNITY SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE

THROUGH QUALITY EDUCATION Saint Giri is designed to meet the educational needs of any community. The school offers an encouraging learning environment for students combined with rich extracurricular programme, says Abhishek Giri, Chairman, Saint Giri Senior Secondary School, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). Saint Giri is successfully running from more than four decades, what’s the driving force that helped you in taking the legacy so far? Saint Giri Senior Secondary School was established in 1968. The co-ed school is affiliated to CBSE encouraging the students to embrace the challenges of learning as sustenance for their minds, bodies and spirits. Saint Giri is designed to meet the educational needs of community with multi-curricular expertise including academics with cultural heritage. The founder Late Harvir Giri believed in comprehensive way of providing education in a gratifying environment, which is followed till date by the entities those are associated with the organisation.

With technology immensely taking over the education sector; what special measures school has adopted to keep the students and curriculum abreast with latest developments. The intervention of technology in schools has brought a drastic change in teaching-learning processes. Teacher has turned to be a mere facilitator and an instructor. Saint Giri as a school regularly reviews the curriculum, policies and pedagogies in all facets thereafter redefining and reframing the strategies and goals. Our organisation is well equipped with all the latest technological teaching-aids to keep in pace with the latest developments.

What are your expectations from the New Education Policy (NEP), and how it will change the face of the school education? National Education Policy should plan to establish advisory committee in each State. It should include educationists from private institutions, teachers, and personnel from education department, college faculty, and admin. Demarcation of SEZ (Special Economic Zone) in every State and type of URGs (Utility Resource Group) of the same should be done fair and square.

What are the major challenges Saint Giri is facing while keeping in pace with the present day

requirements of the education ecosystem? All the Private Un-aided schools’ / institutions’ financial credibility is based on the strength of the students as they have to generate their own finances for its establishment and for the smooth running of the organisation. In the NEP-2019, the PTR (Pupil Teacher Ratio) is restricted to 25:1. It will be a burden for schools as current PTR is 40:1. It needs to be reviewed as additional infrastructure, teachers, and FAR (Floor Area Ratio) will be required in the School Buildings. It will also levy additional financial burden on the private institutions resulting in at least 40% hike in tuition fees for the students in this regard.

What is the roadmap for the expansion of your already growing network of schools? Since, Saint Giri Senior Secondary School is designed to meet the educational needs of community; it provides constructive and motivational learning environment to students. The school’s values and vision are clearly evident in the environment which helps students become independent learners and develop right values and skills to interact successfully and face the challenges of future.

EDU EXPERT’S OPINION 74

THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IS DYNAMIC NOWADAYS

“T

he Education system is not static, it is quite dynamic. What works well today, may not work in near future. In context of education sector, the aforesaid is true as traditional chalk-and-talk method of teaching is now being replaced by digital ways of learning,” Dr A Ashok, Secretary & Commissioner, Board of Intermediate Education, Government of Telangana and Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Basar, Telangana. As a Co-Programme Chair at 9th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Hyderabad, Dr Ashok has deliberated on various topics, issues and opportunities related to higher education ecosystem of Telangana. He was also among the key dignitaries who inaugurated the conclave. Revealing about how the Government in Telangana is implementing various initiatives to improve the higher education in the State, he said, “Despite being the youngest State in the country, we are the pioneers in the education sector. We have set several landmarks in Indian education landscape. Telangana Government has taken various initiatives for different sectors with emphasis on education sector under the dynamic vision of our Hon’ble Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.” “We are heading towards ‘Golden Telangana’ to achieve a considerable development in the State with education as the key focus area. Since the inception of the State, huge investments have been made into education sector. Along with providing equal opportunities of growth for every domain of education sector including pre-primary, school, higher education, and skill and vocational training, the Government has also established several universities across the State,” he added. Dr Ashok stressed on innovation in vocational training as well. According to him, “Similarly in vocational training, institutes can’t only rely on one teaching-learning approach. They have to be diversified and must be in line with the

technology advancement to make knowledge delivery more effective.” He also discussed how Telangana as a State is working on various models to ensure that the students are employable. He revealed, “There are two models nowadays we are talking about employability model and industry-ready model. Industryready model seems to be the most appropriate as employers require the workers having enough hands on experience on a technology or machine to work on.” Referring quality education as the foundation for higher education, Dr Ashok described how his department is ensuring the quality school education in the State. He said, “Good intermediate education is the foundation for good higher education. We are maintaining the global standards for curriculum to prepare knowledgeable, resourceful and competitive citizens. At the same time, we have strict norms for every school to maintain good standards of infrastructure, teachers and certifications. We have around 2,600 junior colleges in Telangana. To maintain certain standards and streamline processes, we have started schemes like online affiliation, integration of all the services with the mobile platform, conducting examinations within time, among others.” Along with 9th Higher Education & Human Resource Conclave Hyderabad, Dr Ashok has participated in various previous events organised by Elets where he shared valuable thoughts to impart quality education.

TRAINING THE BRAIN THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Manas Ranjan Mohanty

t’s 04:30a.m. Reejul, Mihir, Kripa, Sidhhi, Sai, Adhip, Asmita, Pooja, Rohitesh and some more students arrived at school in their uniform with school bag, tiffin and water bottle. When other children were in their deep sleep, these students started their class of the chapter ‘Animals and Birds’ from environmental science book. But, their class was not going to happen in their daily classroom. After some instruction and briefing they boarded the school vehicle which departed towards a swampy land at the outskirt of the town where they were going to see variety of Local and Migratory Birds, observe what they do, understand their habitat and know their names. Lot of questions and discussions started among them immediately after the vehicle started. Sai asked, “Sir, what is that bird?” This was one of the many such outdoor classes happens in every academic session at different times in Kiddy Kids. Students visit many different places, interact with variety of people; experience numerous new things beyond their text books and smart classes. Answering a question and asking a questing are not same. While answering a question may not need any brain exercise, but, asking a question definitely need some energy to create a spark in the neuropath of the brain. ‘Use it or Lose it’ is a very famous line used by the neurologists and psychologists across the world to explain

80

AUGUST 2019

how real life observation and experience are extremely important to create a very effective and intelligent brain. Developing the Brain to its maximum possible level through experiential learning is what the school’s academic policy has adopted since its inception in 2009, says, Manas Ranjan Mohanty, the Principal of the school. He adds that the school had never believed in just syllabus completion, exam and class promotion without actual concept clarity in the mind of the students. Therefore, each and every class everyday starts with an experiential learning activity followed by discussion and sharing among students and most importantly developing question from self observation. Text Books and Copies are always second to hands-on activity which gives real life experiences to students of KKPS, helps them to improve their observation skill, analytical skill and creativity skill. Questioning every question, every concept, every theory and every definition ignites the mind to think more in deep and relate it to day-to-day life situations. It gives us a lot of happiness when parents of our students share how their children are relating their classroom learning to the outer world while travelling or visiting new place- says, Preeti Patnaik, the Vice-Principal of the school. Recalling the first 2-3 years, K Shakuntala who is the academic head of the school shares how it was a very tough task for the school to drive away the parents from the traditional rote learning education to real-life experiential education. Every year the school conducts parenting workshops on various topics related to modern education and child development to bring awareness among parents and integrate their effort aligned with the school system for a very effective development of their children. “Train the Brain” is such a Parenting Workshop organized and conducted by the school in the month of October every year which remains open for all parents from different schools where psychologists, doctors and educationists share their expert knowledge for better parenting and better education. In these years through many innovative and effective educational practices, the Kiddy Kids Premium School in Jajpur Road, Odisha has brought a new revolution and has created its unique identity as a pioneer of brain development through school education. (Manas Ranjan Mohanty, author of the write-up, is the Principal of Kiddy Kids Premium School. Views expressed by him are a personal opinion.) .

We strive towards providing the best and the most innovative teaching-learning experience, says Reekrit Serai, Managing Director, Satluj Group of Schools, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). What are the methodologies followed at Satluj Public School to embed best future practices and innovation with the teaching-learning process? We believe in ‘learning by doing’, but with our little Satluj twist to it. We follow the proven methods of visualisation, technology tools and active learning through peer instruction, group discussion etc. We bring the Satluj twist to it with the help of SAD (Subject Awareness Drive), AL (Applied Learning), CDKS (Cross Domain Knowledge Sharing) and BTCL (Beyond the Classroom Learning) activities. Our 3D Printing and Innovation Labs are also effectively used in the teaching-learning process. State-of-the-art technologies like Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and very soon Blockchain is going to be the part of our teaching-learning process.

Is it important to monitor innovative progress, performance and behaviour of every student at school, what initiatives have been undertaken by Satluj Public School in this regard? At Satluj, apart from using the MIS portal to keep track of the students’ performance, we are in the process of developing our own App, SchoolMan, to keep a track of a complete analysis of every Satlujian, be it academics or sports or activities or behaviour. We have a full-time school counsellor looking into cases that require special attention. We give immense importance to Life Skills and Moral Values lessons. Our BTCL (Beyond the Classroom Learning) too has been a popular way to engage students.

For innovation in school it is very important to have skilled teachers, what measures have been undertaken at the school to improve the teaching experience? Teachers need to be abreast of the current educational technology offerings for the Gen Z students. We at Satluj, constantly upgrade the skill-set of the teaching staff through MOOCs, trainings and workshops. It is very important for school and parents to be in sync for the holistic development of students,

ith increasing double income households, preschools and daycares are no longer a luxury or an option, but rather a necessity for parents today. In such a scenario, parents look for the best and safest space for their children. Touted to be a Rs. 3,500 crore industry in India, pre-schools are abundant in every city today. However, it is crucial how parents choose the best pre-school that facilitates growth for their children. A good preschool provides a strong foundation for learning, both socially and academically. Quality is at the core of success for any business to run. It runs truer in the pre-school space as it is primarily linked with young children. The first few years of their lives become the foundational blocks for the kind of growth they have. Safari Kid International Preschool is a global brand in the preschool space, with over 50 centres across 7 countries. They offer young minds the platform to grow and learn in every sphere of development. The preschool strongly believes that the best approach to early years’ learning is to combine free and structured play in beautiful and engaging learning environments with an education programme that facilitates development across multiple areas. Safari Kid believes that every child is different, and their learning curves are equally unique. Upholding this thought, the preschool is known for its customisation and ability to interact with children using their respective interest areas and skills. The core of Safari Kid lies at four Cs – Customisation, Curriculum, Care and Communication; which forms their strong pedagogical path. Children are most susceptible to forming their understanding of the world in the first five years of their lives, and it is important that preschools provide consistent services across their centres to run standardised best practices. All of their centres are created to be sensory-rich learning environments. The set-up is not like a usual preschool, but instead a lot more fluid in the way children interact with peers and teachers or the way they learn concepts in their day-to-day life. Their staff is trained for more than 100 hours by their international curriculum management that sets the benchmark for all their centres. This global curriculum has proven to be more effective when children from Safari Kid and other peers were evaluated. One of the most unique features is also our power to customise curriculum and the overall experience based on the child’s requirement and skills.

AUGUST 2019

Jitendra Karsan

CEO, Safari Kid India

Language is given utmost importance at Safari Kid with focus on developing each child’s linguistic skills by including local languages as well as English and Spanish. The school believes that play is the best way to learn advanced concepts in language and math which is the reason students of Safari Kid are two grade levels ahead of their peers when they leave for primary school.

THE SAFARI KID ETHOS Care: Children are brought up in a secure and warm environment to stimulate effective nourishment and development in the early years. Customisation: Each child develops at a different pace. Their effective programmes are customised based on what a child needs. Curriculum: Children are taught through a combination of play, explorative learning and a structured approach to academics. Communication: Parents are partners with Safari Kid in the early childhood journey of their children. Effective communication with parents is the key to the overall development of the child.

TUK TAKING ONLINE EDUCATION TO THE WORLD The need and benefits of Online Education has never been felt as strongly as it is felt today. The role of internet in helping children acquire knowledge and self-awareness cannot be washed away, says Manmeet Khurana, Founder and CEO, The Ultimate Knowledge (TUK), in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). How far has ‘The Ultimate Knowledge’ (TUK) reached in realising its vision & mission of making Online Education, especially General Awareness, accessible and affordable to all? We have surely made a start, no doubt, but it is just the beginning and TUK has a long way to go. We will relentlessly pursue our mission till every child in the world gets the TUK exposure. I personally believe every student should have access to quality General Awareness content. Our commercial interests aside, we strive everyday to make TUK really accessible and affordable.

What are the key focus areas while designing the knowledge material for students of different age groups? Personalised content is something we take pride in. While General Awareness is vital for every student, the content should be appropriate to his/her age group. We have worked within defined parameters while setting the right content for children of various grades. Because one size does not fit all! The language, terminology and size of the content would differ, as the grades change. Our content is prepared by specialists who have strong academic background, hence our content is neither over-burdening nor does it fall short.

How important is General Awareness for students of classes 9th to 12th, given the fact that he/she already has a lot of syllabus to cover? General Awarenes is not a separate subject. Rather it is a part of every subject. Academics is very important and the teachers and schools are doing a great job at it. However, TUK is equally important in the sense that it acts as a bridge between academics and the real world. It requires only 15 minutes for students to brush up their information. Irrespective of tough or lengthy syllabus, one should always know what’s going on in the world.

How challenging it is to keep your knowledge bank updated in the ever-changing world, and how do you overcome it?

88

AUGUST 2019

Manmeet Khurana

Founder and CEO, The Ultimate Knowledge (TUK)

We are blessed to have a dedicated team of educationists and content creators who help us with the content as per the age and class group of the student. We have a team of 100+ professionals who work hard to keep our knowledge bank updated. We also have the support of 1,000+ teachers who act as mentors for us. Our research is excellent as the content on the portal is posted only after verifying it from multiple sources.

Do you simply provide information to students or do you have any mechanism on board to monitor their progress as well? Sure we do. All the teachers associated with TUK are given an individual user ID which they can use to monitor the TUK dashboard of the school. On the dashboard there are various parameters to judge the child’s progress. For example, how many articles the child has read in a month, or how many marks he scored in the last Quiz, and many more. It also helps us in analysing students’ progress and advising the school accordingly. The dashboard also helps the school to identify the improvement areas of the child and collaborate with us to work upon those.

QUANTUM JUMP TOWARDS EDUCATION REFORM MOVEMENT

T

his article presents a case study, conducted to investigate how integration of technology in K-12 education sector, in different school environments, and different student demography, can impact learner’s engagement and academic performance. Our findings clearly indicate that the suggestions made in the proposed National Education Policy (NEP) are easily doable, and, if implemented with right kind of tools and strategies, as used in this study, can have tremendous positive impact on several outcomes envisioned in the NEP. Initial findings in this study can open the door for implementation at a much wider scale in a shorter time span. Tools used in the study: 1) Digital content aligned with the National Curriculum (NCERT) for teaching-learning-assessment with dynamic graphics and animations that can be delivered on-line through/via any web enabled smart gadget including Tablets/PC/Ipads/(Smart Mobile phone); 2) Learning Management System (LMS) that provides tools needed to/for delivering and managing instruction, and 3) Structured instructional approach for regular teaching, and Adaptive practice testing before any summative assessment that empowers the teacher to engage students in class and at home; 4) Teacher training and professional development process designed in such a way that it becomes a part of their teaching and student evaluation. The delivery on content and use of LMS tools requires no downloads and no installations, because content is in HTML5 and LMS is programmed in Dot.net Implementation requirements: 1) Projection systems in class rooms, 2) preferably one computer lab with as many computers as class size in school, 3) at least 4-5 hours per week after-school internet access for students to complete their weekly home assignments.

Teacher training for two days face-to-face meetings, and then continuous training as they teach, requiring them to complete student assignments before these are assigned to students every week, all managed through digital controls through LMS tools. Master lesson Plans for all grades and courses, prepared jointly under the supervision of the school subject coordinators, all online, that included weekly online home assignments for students and what teacher is expected is teach during every week. Online weekly assignments have a circular approach: Tutorial->Homework->Quiz for

each subject to be completed in that sequence, enforced electronically by making tutorial as pre-requisite to homework and homework in turn as pre-requisite to quiz on the same assigned topics. The first term of the school started after the teacher training. During the first week of this term, teachers provided orientation to students through pre-recorded orientation videos, and conducting one period in the lab for students to complete their first online assignment in the presence of the class teacher. Thereafter, weekly lesson was followed as designed in the digital Master Lesson Plan. All weekly assignments became active after every Sunday mid-night, automatically, and expire just before mid-night the following Sunday. Weekly routine for teachers included two types of tasks, i) every day, and the other every week. Every day, teacher was expected, and most of them did so, to check and respond to messages in her internal e-mails from her students. (Student messages, sent while studying online, contained screen shots of the page from where the message of help was sent). They were expected to mark electronic attendance in every class period, the LMS allowed different options for marking

Student engagement: On average the students spent 5.25 hours per week on online assignments for all five subjects. All students had different assignment questions with the same degree of difficulty, minimising the scope of any unfair means. Students received instant feedback with solutions on all assignments and option to retake assignments if score was not satisfactory, minimising anxiety level. Student survey conducted, using system’s survey tools, had more than 90% positive response to all the survey questions, indicating total freedom from anxiety and forward looking approach for every assignment The principal reported that student’s reading and writing skills have improved as reported by the teachers to her. Teachers reported that their work load of doing traditional routine tasks like grading, recording, reporting, and even counseling has significantly reduced, and time saved is used for their other professionally rewarding engagements like: studying before taking class for completing the cycle (Tutorial

as lecture notes-homework-quiz), watching students activity reports of their work online, and staying in touch with them through e-mails and weekly online announcements. For feedback video please visit: bit.ly/educofeedback • Service providers, staff of “Educo Development Foundation”, spent extensive amount of time in providing support to students and teachers during the first year, but that was reduced, just after one year, to courtesy visits to school. New batch of sixth graders picked up from their student peers, and teachers knew what they had to do. The yearly lesson plan created in the first year was virtually duplicated with small adjustments for the second year, meaning there was no need of additional teacher training in the second year except for one meeting of EDF staff for overview of the first year results and orientation of new features of LMS updated based on their recommendations during the previous year. Best student performers, judged exclusively based on their online activity records and performance in online assignments, were recognised with trophies. One of the most interesting observation was that there was a strong positive correlation between the time spent online on assignments and their grades in online assignments and paper-pencil tests. Because of the commitment of the school administration, all teething issues, and problems related to EWS students not having internet access at home were carefully managed and resolved by the school. The objective of this study was to establish that given proper guidance, tools and training to the teachers, effective well planned integration of the use of technology can make a real difference. Resistance to change and initial teething problems can be easily resolved if the service providers and the school administration are committed to be the partners of change, as was the case in this study. Findings of this study clearly indicate that what is envisioned in NEP can be achieved, at a national level. Resources needed are available, as mentioned here. What is needed is to officially conduct such pilots at a larger scale for greater awareness and acceptability. The Educo Development Foundation (EDF) welcomes any school to join in this movement for “effective integration of technology in 21st century teaching and learning process”. For more information or for becoming apart of the extended pilot, call: 011-4-555-3-801 (Pushpish).

attendance: Present, Absent, Tardy/Late, Exempted. Every week, teacher had two major tasks: i) to complete the cycle of activities (Tutorial-Homework-Quiz) before discussing in class and before assigning to students; ii) check her class’s online activities and send reminders to those who lagged behind in completing their assignments. Teacher had the option to modify any assessment item, if considered inappropriate based on what she was to discuss in class. Hopefully, during her own study, she was better prepared to conduct her presentation in class and gain more confidence on what students would get in assignments. This is what we call continuous professional development. The lesson plans included summative assessments at the end of school terms and the final. Every summative assessment had an online Adaptive Practice Testing (APT), for the students to prepare for the main tests. All types of real time student progress and activity reports were available to teachers and the school principal under their own logins. Parents received automated weekly reports on their child’s performance through emails and text messages.

ECONOMY AND EDUCATION ARE INTERCONNECTED

“E

conomy and education are very closely interconnected. It is impossible for any country to be developed without allocating highest possible expenditure for development of education and human resource,” Dr Ganesh Rao, Director, MITCON Institute of Management, Pune. He was among the key speakers at 11th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave who shared their thoughts to improve the higher education sector of India. He suggested various measures that may help the country’s youth and economy to grow simultaneously. He emphasised on nurturing the students without confused minds saying, “Unemployable, globalised curriculum and globalised context are among the key buzzwords among the education fraternity nowadays. It is creating doubts in the minds of young students.” Questioning the media’s role in improving the education ecosystem across the country, Dr Rao said, “With a population of around 140 crore of which 50 crore — a bit less than half of the population belongs to the age group of 5-24. We have got 900 universities; 40,000 colleges; nine lakh faculty members;

and 3.5 crore students out of 140 crore. Nowadays, it is very common in media publications and news papers to create panic about Indian education sector.” Suggesting the measures for improving the current scenario, Dr Rao suggested that the educators can play major role in that. He said, “It has been done by publishing the stories like: Engineering colleges are closing down!!! Is there a problem and others? It is very important for us as educationist to come together and reveal the truth that there is no such crisis, only a mismatch. This mismatch has to be tuned right without being panic.” He also defines that what exactly are the changes required for education sector. Emphasising that not the basic education rather we need to change the practices, he said, “Another very common thing we hear nowadays is that the education system needs to be changed. It is important to note here that we need not to change the education basics rather we just need to change education practices and adopt latest technologies. We need to inculcate confidence among the youth so that they don’t get stressed due to ridiculous stories.”

‘TECHNOLOGY CAN’T REPLACE TEACHERS’

“O

ne important thing that comes to everyone’s mind that after digitisation of education, will teachers be required? Teachers will always be required as technology can assist a teacher but cannot replace them,” said Dr R S Panwar, Director, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Rabindranath School of Excellence, Pune. He was speaking at the Inaugural session of 12th School Leadership Summit Pune. Dr Panwar discussed various important aspects that may support in improving the education sector. Sharing his thoughts on technology’s role in education sector, Dr Panwar said, “The use of technology and digital tools in education is growing at a rapid rate. It is likely that after 50 years, we may find that there are no physical schools. Practices like Flipped Classrooms are on similar lines. We must be thankful technology and educationist who helped us to realise that how digital tools can improve teaching-learning processes.” Describing about how the school was started, Dr Panwar

said, “Bharati Vidyapeeth started functioning with certificate examinations in English and Mathematics for the school going children. Nowadays, the schools under the aegis of Bharati Vidyapeeth assists in holistic development of students right from pre-primary to higher secondary classes. The practices followed at the schools ensure a strong base for pursuing higher education.” “Currently, there are 91 units spread over nine districts of Maharashtra namely Pune, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Solapur, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Thane and Palghar. These schools include a few cosmopolitan and international schools as well as the schools in interior regions. ‘HIGHER EDUCATION NEEDS TO FOCUS MORE ON NATIONAL CONTEXT’

Prof Amita Mahor

Dean, VIT University, Bhopal

“I

t is very important to focus on national context of education before globalised context. Though there is no harm in adopting the best global practices and stay relevant as per the trends but at the same time focusing on education trends relevant to Indian trends will be more beneficial,” said Prof Amita Mahor, Dean, VIT University, Bhopal. Prof Mahor was among key speakers at the 11th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Pune. She shared her thoughts during a panel discussion on the topic – Changing Dynamics of Higher Education in a Globalised Context: Envisioning Strategies for Future. Stressing on a very important point that quality of higher education should be improved, Prof Mahor said, “There was a time when it was necessary to make higher education accessible to a large no of people in the country. Thanks

124

AUGUST 2019

to our Government’s efforts and policies that the same has been realised. Now, the quality of education is needed to be improved.” “On every platform, we talk about improving the quality of education but very few of us will be aware about the parameters on which the quality of any education ecosystem can be adjudged. These parameters will not only help the institutes to improve their ranking but it will also help students choose the most suitable institute as per their requirements,” she added. Prof Mahor also suggested that the higher education must serve every community in India for sustainable development. According to her, “In order to have sustainable development in the country, it is necessary to serve the local communities. It means that the higher education must empower our grass root level workers like farmers, labourers, mechanics and others. Education will help them to know about the best practices of respective sectors and boost their productivity.” Sharing her thoughts on encouraging innovation in higher education landscape of the country, she said, “Innovation in higher education should not only be limited to adopting new technologies rather we also need to focus on adopting the latest pedagogical practices. It is often heard from the institutes that our curriculum is at par to the global standards which is a good thing. However, the curriculum must also serve the needs of our country’s requirement then only we can be successful.” She also raised a very important issue of brain drain in the country. Suggesting a solution for the same, Prof Mahor said, “A huge portion Indian taxpayers’ money is being spent on teaching the students who lately work in a foreign country. It is bad for country’s growth and the Government must bring such policies which may help India to retain its talent.”

Brijesh Karia

National Business Head, Robomate

‘TECHNOLOGY IN HANDS OF GOOD TEACHERS, A BOON FOR EDUCATION SYSTEM’

“W

e don’t need technology geeks which are good teachers; we need teaching geeks who are good with technology. Because I firmly believe, no technology can replace a teacher but definitely good technology given to a good teacher will absolutely change the environment,” said Brijesh Karia, National Business Head, Robomate+. He was speaking at the 12th School Leadership Summit Pune, organised by Elets Tchnomedia and powered by digitalLEARNING on May 18, 2019. Karia was among the key speakers who graced the inaugural session of the summit with their presence. In his address, Karia talked about certain pressure points students are facing and best practices being followed in the last 2-3 years. Highlighting the fuss created around Class 10 board exams, he said, “I am working with 300 plus schools across the length and breadth of the country. We have been seeing a lot of changes. Everyone would agree that board has become the centre of a child’s life, especially Class 10 students. I was talking to one of my students recently and it made me realise that children are put under so much stress, pressure, and durance for no reason whatsoever”. Sharing his personal communiqué with a child over the matter, Karia said, “When we talk to students, when we counsel them, we ask one question – “What is your biggest problem? Their biggest problem is lack of time. After spending 6 to 7 hours in school they are forced to go to tuitions for 2-3 hours. So, 10 hours of a day either they are sitting in

126

AUGUST 2019

the school or a coaching class plus 1-2 hours of travelling. Then after coming back home from coaching, they have to finish homework given at school as well as tuition. Moreover, the problem increases if any surprise test is there. Such a huge stress confuses all the students and eventually they end up studying nothing.” Thereafter, he talked about what the schools pan India are doing to solve the problem of the students. Karia said, “One best practice that I have seen across the country is use of technology. Most of the schools are using technology in an excellent manner. I know about some schools which are doing flipped classroom pedagogy. They are telling the students in advance that tomorrow I am going to teach you certain topic, why don’t you read/watch that topic and come. So children know beforehand that this is going to happen.” “Singhania School in Thane – which is one of the top ICSE schools of the country, has created an app for the students where teachers are giving recorded video lessons. So what happens is – students have learnt from the teacher, once they go home they don’t feel the need to go to tuitions. They open the app do the revision and their studies are done. So that’s what schools are doing,” he added. “Another best practice is conferences like the one we are attending today. Schools must send their teachers here. There are certain wonderful discussions that happen in the panel. Believe me we have learnt a lot by just listening to some of the key industry speakers. This is one thing that I feel will help in changing the dynamics in the school,” Karia concluded.

EDU EXPERT’S OPINION

HANDS-ONLEARNING BRINGS BALANCE BETWEEN EDUCATION & ENJOYMENT Pravesh Mohey

Regional Manager Marketing & Sales, Butterfly Edufields

“T

he present teaching system involves lectures, readings, demonstrations, and audio-visuals but we have understood that it doesn’t help in enhancing grasping power of a child. Instead, hands on learning, teaching others, group discussions have a higher retention rate. And this has been proven as well that by involving kids in learning process balances education and enjoyment simultaneously,” said Pravesh Mohey, Regional Manager – Marketing & Sales, Butterfly Edufields. He was speaking at the 11th School Leadership Summit 2019, Chandigarh, on the topic: ‘Bridging the Learning Divide – Experiential Learning is the Way Forward’. The summit was organised on April 12, 2019 by Elets Technomedia, a premier media and technology research organisation. Explaining about his company’s narrative in providing hands-on learning experience to students, Mohey said, “We at Butterfly intent to address and bridge this learning gap by offering affordable Hands on Solutions in Science & Math. This might not answer all the whys but will surely bring out the fear of ‘why’ among children”. As per the National Training Laboratories, Maine, USA – the average retention rate among students is highest with Hands on Learning – 75% whereas with discussion it is 50%. On the other hand, it is 30% with demonstration and 20% with audio visual whereas shockingly it is lowest in reading and learning with just 10% and 5% respectively. The data was revealed in an industry presentation given by Mohey during his address at the summit. Explaining the reason for the name ‘Butterfly’ and his company’s vision, Mohey said, “We know the evolution of

caterpillar to a butterfly. Every child has that potential and should get that opportunity to evolve like a butterfly from a caterpillar. We want to develop every child in a way that he gets a chance to learn from different formats”. “Just like caterpillar every child has the potential to transform into a unique individual. Our vision is to make learning more enriching, engaging and fun for all sections of children in developing world and around. When children apply what they learn, they become doers and that’s what we want in the world right now. Doers are the ones who succeed in their chosen fields in the future,” he added. Further, highlighting the importance of answering questions of kids, Mohey stated, “We cannot make a kid understand something by simply telling it – Ye Aisa hi hota hai (it is like this only) rather it is important to explain ‘why it is so’. So at butterfly, we make sure to appropriately explain “why” to the kids.” “Interestingly, so far, Butterfly has been able to impact the lives of 11, 00,000 students, touched 9,000 schools, covered 18 states and expanded in 3 countries. Skills like scientific temperament, observational and critical thinking, curiosity and perseverance have been inculcated by the students while involved in hands on learning,” he added. In Butterfly Edufield’s presentation – it was reported that an improvement of 40 percentile in Science was recorded in schools where Butterfly Edufield’s Hands on Activity related to Conductivity, Electric Circuit was done whereas a 25 percentile improvement was measured in Maths subject in which Hands on Activity related to geometry was conducted.
