The Dixon in 2011 One might easily suppose that the Dixon Gallery and Gardens was defined in 2011 by one name only: Jean-Louis Forain. It would be a fairly reasonable assumption to make. The enormous success of our Forain retrospective in Memphis, the importance of the relationships we forged with the Petit Palais and the Forain family in Paris, the excitement generated by La Fête Forain, our opening gala, and the extraordinary programming the Dixon staff produced day after day, night after night, during the fifteen weeks that the exhibition was on view, would seem accomplishment enough for one year. But to arrive at that conclusion would be to miss the effort and productivity that the Dixon brings to the museum and gardens projects fifty-two weeks out of every year, including 2011. This brief introduction does not permit me room to list all of the Dixon’s impressive endeavors in 2011; you will find references to some of our more notable achievements in the pages that follow. But I would be remiss if I did not mention a few favorite moments of my own from 2011. I am proud of Joe Jones: Radical Painter of the American Scene, a major loan show we produced with another great institutional partner, the Saint Louis Art Museum. I savored the 100,000 tulips and daffodils that blanketed our gardens in color last spring. I was delighted to see highlights from our world-class collection of French Impressionist paintings featured as an exhibition at the El Paso Museum of Art, and then as a major component of a Memphis Brooks Museum of Art show later in the year. I loved Private Memphis, thanks to the many generous art collectors in this community, and was astounded by the sheer inventiveness of the very popular Brian Selznick show. In 2011 as in every year the Dixon continued to be one of the gems of Memphis, a place of beauty, tranquility, and creativity. But it is an organization that squeezes the very maximum in programming excellence, audience and member reward, and sheer experiential wonder from the resources at its disposal. I am proud of all we produced in 2011 and prouder still to be part of the Dixon team. You no doubt recall your own special moments of the Dixon in 2011, and hopefully this annual report will help preserve all we experienced together. Each of the fifty-two weeks of 2011 were special at the Dixon, but I will more than understand if your most special memories somehow involve Jean-Louis Forain. Mine will too.

Introduction As the director of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, it is my responsibility to issue a report each year, documenting the organization’s accomplishments and progress over the prior twelve-month period. As contributing staff and trustees, we strive for objectivity in this publication. But with the success of Jean-Louis Forain: La Comédie parisienne, the expansion and maturation of our gardens and education programs, the growth in our audience, membership, and fundraising numbers, and perhaps most notably our re-accreditation by the American Association of Museums in 2011, we may have some difficulty stifling our exuberance. We had an outstanding year. In the pages that follow, you will find lists of the many activities that took place at the Dixon in 2011: exhibitions we originated and those we hosted; the acquisitions we made to the permanent collection and the outgoing loans we approved. There is an accounting of our gardens programs, including exhibitions, events, workshops, and lectures. Our many education vehicles follow, whether adult or children’s programs, workshops or lectures, onsite or outreach. This report documents the many performances we have hosted in 2011, the special events we created, and the organization with whom we partnered. And it includes a breakdown of our audience numbers, our progress as a fundraising and membership organization, an accounting of the earned income we generated, and a provisional statement of our financial position at the end of 2011. We also include our audited financials from the previous fiscal year, 2010. In my role as director of the Dixon, I am fortunate to serve and to be advised by a board of trustees made up of some of the most accomplished individuals in this community. I in turn supervise the most dedicated, knowledgeable, and certainly the hardest working staff in Memphis. Therein lies the secret of the Dixon’s success—in 2011, or any other year.
