from either laughing or crying when you leave. I love to have friends to my house. We laugh, eat, watch sappy or funny movies, eat, laugh, then eat and laugh some more. Sometimes we cry. Sometimes we just sit quietly, holding hands just to “get through” the loss of a loved one, the demise of a relationship, or any one of life’s billion disappointments. But we don’t waste our time sitting around lamenting the imperfect state of my abode. There is life is my house. Even the dog hair (and I sweep EVERY day, and it still doesn’t matter!) reflects the

That pile of books on the floor — quite incongruent in topic — illustrates my constant curiosity and desire to learn, my insatiable hunger for knowledge, and my inability to focus on one topic at a time and hence the PILE on the floor. And don’t trip over the dog toys and bones on the floor, or their blankies. Forgive them. You see, they are so happy when I get home from work that they simply have to lie near my chair with all their favorite things, as I read, grade papers or write. And, yeah, I know most people don’t keep a paw print from their dead dog in their living room, but Shadow was such a big part of our lives and having even that bit of him around brings us joy and comfort. (at least I keep his ashes in
the stairway bookshelves, largely out of view!) And that jumble of pictures that seem outdated and silly? Well, those are the people I love and I need to look at them every day to remind me how God has blessed me. That jumble of odd clippings, magnets and cards that droop sloppily from my fridge? Those are FROM the people I love and they, too, remind me how blessed and loved I am. They remind me that people know how I love to laugh, how I love to read, and how I love to be loved. No, you will not see my house featured on the cover of any magazines (unless “Hoarders” puts out its own magazine!), but you will see a lot of life in my house. And Life is not clean and neat and unsoiled. Life, like my house, is messy and cluttered and gritty.
Church Kalahari retreat changes teens’ lives
By BOBBY WARREN Staff Writer The Bible depicts baptism as a transformative event in the lives of converts. Is it any wonder, then, how a water park in Northern Ohio plays a part in changing the lives of thousands of students? Nick Cleveland, pastor of high school ministries at Wooster Grace Brethren Church, has been taking a group to Kalahari Water Resorts & Conventions in Sandusky for eight years. There were 331 from four churches who attended the first retreat, and this year there were 1,864, about 280 of them adult volunteers, from about 25 churches. “It’s neat to see what
a tradition this has become,” said Cleveland. This year, Wooster Grace Brethren took 340 people, more than all of the people who went that first year. The students came from other area churches, including Millersburg Grace Brethren Church, Smithville Brethren Church and Smithville United Methodist Church. While the teens have access to the water amenities during the weekend, they are isolated from them during the conference sessions. “We take kids out of their environment, eliminate the distractions and ask them not to carry cell phones for the weekend so they can hear from God, that he loves them,
he has a plan for them and he wants to use how they are gifted to change the world for the sake of eternity,” Cleveland said. Something happens to the students and adults who participate at Kalahari. Of the experience, one student wrote, “I learned the true meaning of following Christ and finally understood that God’s plan is the only one that matters.” Another student tweeted, “I had never thought going to a water park would change my life.” But lives do change, and that is why people like Cleveland, Mariah Vacha, Dave Rhoad, Scott and Cathy Simms and so many other volunteers work hard to make it a special weekend for the students.
Vacha, an administrative assistant with Student Ministries at Grace Brethren, said more than 1,000 students responded to the gospel message and made decisions for Christ. Some of those made decisions to be a Christ follower for the first time, others made a commitment to deepen their faith, some decided to go into full-time ministry and others decided to dedicate their lives to following God’s calling, Cleveland said. “Think about all of these kids and the potential they have,” he said. “I began helping with the Kalahari Retreat years ago because I saw See Pg. 7 — RETREAT

Man makes a stand, takes a run on sands “Oh no, John,” said Kristin. “You just take your time and do what you have to do. This is family time. I think it’s best that we stay together.” That was certainly not what I had been hoping to hear. My stall tactics

bicycles available. Such was the case on the beach that day. For the first time in my adult life I had actually traveled somewhere without bringing a bike along. This was by design. Somewhere in my mind I thought it might be an OK thing to spend an entire week off the bike — after all it had literally been years. Kristin thought it would be a good idea too. In retrospect, I think she may have had an ulterior motive. Now I found myself being “chased” by the idea that as my womenfolk mashed out a half-dozen miles on the tideline each morning to earn their evening beer, I was lounging about the hotel lobby downing Belgian waffles and jelly rolls as if it was an
Olympic event. All the while I imagined my fitness eroding like a surfswamped sand castle. I suited up to run not because I wanted to, but because without my daily dose of exercise-induced endorphins my tiny brain was telling me that by the time I got back to civilization I would be a 300-pound couch cushion. The women had begun to salivate the moment I suggested I might join them. Now I was literally on my knees trying to gracefully beg out. Ultimately, it came down to something approximately akin to honor. I had to do what I said I was going to do or I’d never be able to live with either of them for the duration of the vacation. I tied my shoes, started my watch and we
ran. Based on Kristin’s previous runs, it would take us 20 minutes or so to get to the boardwalk on the distant horizon, then we could turn around and run back. By the time my watch passed the 6-minute mark I was writhing in the sand as the pony tails disappeared into the sun; my seized quadriceps glistening like a pair of smoked hams. I had returned to my feet by the time the girls made it back around. “I found an interesting shell and stopped to check it out,” I said. “By the time I looked up you had both vanished, so I just stayed here so I wouldn’t miss you on the way back! ‘Family time,’ you know.” For some strange reason I don’t believe either of them were fooled.

had already delayed our start by 10 or 15 minutes, and I had figured that with both of them pawing the sand like a pair of pony-tailed cheetahs, they’d be happy to take off and commence with whoopin’ on each other. But there was a bigger fish to fry that morning on Daytona Beach, and neither of them would be happy until the one with the backward ball cap and three-day beard was turning on a spit. I’m not entirely sure what lies at the root of the primal pleasure women derive from beating up on mild-mannered guys like me. I mean, when it comes to running I’m the least competitive man I know. And sure, I’m in pretty good shape from riding my bicycle more or less continuously for the past 30 years, but running is a different game altogether. I have no interest in running for recreational purposes. For me, running is something one does only when being chased — and only then when there are no

With new ownership, a revamped menu and fresh new décor, the Brick Towne Tavern in Sugarcreek is transforming into an Ohio State Buckeyes themed sports bar that’s fun, affordable and family friendly. The longtime bar, once known as Shaggy’s, but which has been the Brick Towne Tavern since 2004, was purchased in November by Sugarcreek Hospitality, LLC. Located at 980 W. Main St., the tavern is open Monday-Tuesday, 11 a.m.-midnight, and Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. It also will be open Super Bowl Sunday, noon-midnight. “We’re trying to get an
Ohio State theme,” said manager Irene Schwartz, pointing to an enlarged framed photo of The Shoe and a ceiling painted green to look like a football field. And, although the menu is undergoing some revisions, they’ll still be serving up the same great tasting, affordable fare — appetizers, sandwiches, subs, fish and shrimp, salads, wraps and a kid’s menu. Along with “the best chili in town,” the kitchen is starting to make daily homemade soups. The regular and special menu items all are reasonably priced, as are the daily and weekly drink specials, said Schwartz,
who said the business soon will be adding draft beer. In addition to the televisions scattered among the two-room establishment, there’s pool tables and a jukebox to further entertain. It’s something that is hard to find,” said Miller. The store also has many “Grandma grabbers,” as Miller calls them, namebrand apparel for babies and children by Carhartt and John Deere, as well as miniature cowboy boots and slippers. And as the name implies, the store still sells a selection of harnesses and saddles. Besides offering shoes, boots and apparel in many makes and models, Charm Harness & Boot provides a full-service shoe repair shop right across the street. “We still offer full shoe
repair and re-soling. It’s kind of a lost art these days,” said Miller, noting that the shop also performs build-ups. Despite the large selection and store space, Charm Harness still offers shoppers a small store atmosphere. “We’re still a familyowned shoe store and we try to keep that familyowned atmosphere,” said Miller. The pedal-tractors on shelves and the hunting trophies on the walls add to the fun. Along with owner Roy Miller, the shop is managed by his three sons — Allen, Leroy and David — with five fulltime employees: Mary Lou, Regina, Roy D., LuCinda and Twila. “Customer service is our goal,” said Miller. Store representatives can help customers navigate through the many store selections to find the right item. For example, if a welder comes in, Miller will direct him toward shoes that suit his trade. If a timber worker comes looking for shoes, Miller will steer him toward a more aggressive pair. The store also works with companies whose employees are required to wear steel-toed boots. “We try to help the customer find the shoe for his or her need,” said Miller. “We always try to keep

From a psychological standpoint he wanted to know why anyone would pay $76,590 for the opportunity to milk 115 cows twice a day 365 days a year. The following is my reply to that letter. The Editor 1211 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036 Dear Sir, I am writing in regard to the letter written by Barry Jenkins, Arlington, Va., headlined “Dairy Farms Become An Expensive Hobby.” Having been a dairy farmer for 60 years, I take offense at your use
of the word “hobby” in reference to dairy farming. Dairy farming has never been a hobby. Dairy farming is working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Dairymen and dairy women rise from four o’clock in the morning and on. With a quick cup of coffee, which they usually carry with them, they head to the barn to milk and care for their cows. Breakfast will wait until chores are done, whatever time that may be. The time when they eat a meal usually depends on machinery breakdowns, cows calving, or the weather. They don’t get an hour off for lunch or an afternoon quitting time. They are often found in the barn in the middle of the night delivering a baby calf or
tending a sick cow. When they aren’t in the barn they can usually be found plowing fields, planting seeds, or harvesting crops to feed the dairy cows. It is all work, never a hobby! To answer your question as to where they get the extra $76,590 to pour into the operation annually, usually the wife or another family member works off the farm and their paycheck is contributed to the expenses of the farm and family living. Sometimes the dairy person also works a part-time job. The children often raise steers or dairy beef feeders as 4-H or FFA projects and sell them at local county or state fairs. When old enough they take on baby-sitting or part-time jobs to help out with
expenses. Dairy farming is a “family affair” with every member contributing in some fashion. When the income isn’t enough they borrow money, go in debt, and make payments. Why do they do it? For many reasons. They love their farms. Many have been in the family for generations. They have a history going back years and years. They love their land and working with it. They love their cows. Most have bred cows for years. They have worked hard to develop a herd with outstanding genetics that will contribute to their chosen breed for years to come. They have bred and shown prize winning cows that become like members of their family and you will find many
dairy farms where those cows have a burial site on the farm instead of being culled. Dairy farmers just love being dairy farmers, just as other people love their occupations! And last, but not least, they have hope that someday, somehow, and someway changes will occur that will once again allow dairy farmers to earn a decent living by just milking cows. They are determined to keep going until that day arrives. They don’t give up. They have faith that keeps them going in spite of the hardships. They are special people and they are optimists!

New Bedford Going against nature to track down the best bathroom Ask most people if they are right- or left-handed and they’ll answer in a heartbeat. Ask about their eye dominance, and marksmen will respond quickly. Ask about their feet and most will stare blankly at you. Continue reading this potentially important information, and you’ll never walk into a public restroom the same way again. I have been lucky enough to take a few mini courses in tracking. I can identify a cat from a dog from a coyote, and on a good day, can tell you if the deer that walked through the mud was a male or female. Animal tracking gives you a strong connection to the natural world. You begin to walk with
the animal, feel its thirst and quest for water, its attempt to eat or consequence of being eaten. A good tracker will look at tracks and be able to piece together an entire story about that animal, because animals follow patterns and instincts. We have to remember, though, that when it comes down to it, we are animals, too. And just like the critters of the wild, we follow patterns and instincts. Once we figure out how to use our feet and legs, we follow
them where they take us. Obviously our brains tell us where to go, but our bodies tend to tweak the way we do it. Consider the way you reach for a cup of coffee or a toothbrush. Which hand do you use? If someone is whispering to you, don’t you lean in with a certain ear? Sidedness happens all over our bodies, not just in which hand we use to sign our names. Unbeknownst to most people, our feet and legs have a dominance almost as important as our hands. Soccer players and skate or snowboarders might be more familiar with this concept, but think of which foot you use to walk up the first stair? Or with which foot you might smash a man-eating
spider? Chances are it’s all the same side. Which leads me straight (or semistraight?) to the bathroom. According to my tracking instructor, humans’ right- or left-foot dominance will make both conscious and subconscious decisions in their lives. For example, if a person wanders off into a field or the woods, the dominant foot will tend to pull the person in that direction. (We actually tested this, blindfolded in a field. If I’m ever lost, please check to the right.) About 81 percent of us out there are rightfooted, which means that when given the opportunity, 81 percent of our bodies will generally take us to the right. That’s a lot of people going to

Farm briefs Wayne, Holmes counties Extension offices to present pesticide recertification training Private pesticide applicators with a license to purchase and apply restricted use pesticides are required to attend three hours of recertification training every three years to maintain their license. That training must include at least one hour of core and the remaining two hours can be category related. Core training includes topics such as safe handling of pesticides, sprayer technology and calibration, pesticide mixing and loading, pesticide mode of action, pesticide laws and regulations. Category training includes specific pesticide use and pest management related to a specific crop or situation. Editor: Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties recently made an appeal to the community for donations in support of the purchase of a passenger van to replace a high-mileage vehicle that the agency currently uses to provide consumer transportation. While access to reliable transportation is one of the most critical factors to gaining and maintain employment, only approximately 20 percent of Goodwill consumers have access to this resource. Obituaries Lois Thatcher, 83 Lois Nadine Thatcher, 83, formerly of Brinkhaven, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Ohio Eastern Star Home, Mount Vernon. She was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Benton to Mast and Beulah (Mast) Kauffman. She was a graduate of Aultman Nursing School in Canton and Syracuse University in New York. She was a certified midwife, and worked as such on an Indian reservation in Arizona for seven years. She was also the former director of nursing at Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg. Lois married Charles “Jack” Thatcher on June 25, 1966. He survives. They were members of Millersburg Mennonite
Church. Surviving in addition to her husband of Brinkhaven, are a sister, Geneva (Melvin) Martin of Pennsylvania; a brother, Elmo (Katherine) Kauffman of Walnut Creek; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Grace Lehman. Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 5 at Fischer Funeral Home in Danville, with pastors Patrick and Christine Nfzigeor officiating. Burial was in Workman Cemetery, Danville. Mildred Huth, 81 Mildred Anne “Millie” Huth, 81, formerly of Sterling, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Hospice Care Center in Fairlawn. She was born July 15, 1931, in Doylestown to Albert C. and Hazel C. (Hoff) Wo y a t , and married Paul F. Huth on May 22, 1950. He preceded her in death. Millie drove bus for Norwayne Local Schools for 38 years and was also “the pizza lady” at Buehlers Wadsworth for 14 years. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed by children, Richard (Elaine) Huth of Vero Beach, Fla., Patricia (Greg) Lance of Burbank and Scott (Tricia) Huth of Dalton; 12 grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; brothers, Ivan Woyat of Rittman and Kenneth (Cathy) Woyat of Somerville; sisters, Gladys Zimmerman of Lakeville, Lucille Dietry of Doylestown, Martha (Dale) Schmid of Big Prairie, Louise (Bill) Tester of Lorain, Irene (Jim) Keck of Rittman, Rosemary (Larry) Goodman of Clinton, and Barbara (Jim) Copley of Rittman. In addition to her husband, Paul, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Stephen; brothers, Ira, Chuck and Glenn Woyat; and a sister, Ruth Moore. Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 14 at Roberts Funeral Home-Hillcrest Chapel, Seville. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Ervin Schlabach, 75 Ervin J. Schlabach, 75, 31509 Township Road 227, Fresno, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at his residence. He was born Nov. 29, 1937, in Holmes County to the late John A. and Mary (Hershberger) Schlabach, and married Ida L. Miller on May 22, 1958. She survives. He was a retired furniture maker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Surviving in addition to his wife, are children, Albert E. Norma Ernst, 88 Norma J. Ernst, 88, of Shreve, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Majora Lane in Millersburg. She was born June 5, 1924, in Shreve to Guy and Hazel (Cole) Biggs and married James Ernst on Nov. 26, 1945. He preceded her in death on April 8, 1980. She was a graduate of Shreve High School and Canton Business College. Norma was a life resident of Shreve and had attended Shreve Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She found special comfort in the Blachleyville Church of Christ Bible study she attended. Surviving are children, James E. (Karen) Ernst of Wooster, Jerald E. Ernst of Shreve, Bartley (Mary) Ernst of Glenmont, and Susan (John) Baker of
Big Prairie, grandchildren, Troy Ernst, Jonathan, Roderick and Brandon Baker, Savannah, Ryan and Devin Ernst; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James “Bud” and John Biggs; a sister, Mary Tice; and a grandson, Todd Ernst. Lake has no answer for Hochstetler’s hot hand By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer BERLIN — Hiland coach Dave Schlabach can’t remember the last time he won Game 20 at Classic in the Country. But thanks to some expert marksmanship by Regina Hochstetler, who drilled six 3-pointers and poured in 30 points, the Hawks capped off the 10th annual basketball feast with a 58-50 win over the Lake Blue Streaks Monday night. “We needed to hit a lot of shots,” the victorious coach said after his team notched win No. 14 against two defeats. His junior sharpshooter was thrilled to have another big night in Berlin. “It feels great,” Hochstetler said. “These were my first two Classic wins. If teams are going to take away my 3-point shot, then I’m going to have to try and create some other things.” Which she did, hitting a
spinning layup and three other short jumpers, as well as swishing all four of her free throws. Kendra Schalbach got the scoring started for Hiland. The senior guard said her coach wanted her to score more and she responded with 17 points (two 3-pointers). “If I’d have known all I had to do was ask,” coach Schlabach said with a laugh. Hochstetler connected on her first 3-pointer, and Natalie Nickol and Hochstetler scored to give the Hawks a 9-7 lead after the first quarter. Hochstetler started the second quarter with three straight triples as Hiland bumped the spread to 18-0, but the Blue Streaks rallied behind McKenna Stephens to trim the lead to five, 20-15, at the half. Kendra Schlabach drilled a deep one, Jenica Schrock rattled home another and Hochstetler connected again for the Hawks, who hit 10 triples
for the game in taking a 42-38 lead into the final frame. “Coach has been talking to me about stepping up,” Kendra Schlabach said. “People are guarding Gina, or trying to, so we need other people to step up. He talked to me about not passing up shots, and I tried to do that tonight.” Schlabach and Hochstetler kept the Blue Streaks at arm’s length by hitting free throws down the stretch. Stephens paced Lake with 26 points, connecting on 12-of-19 shots and adding two free throws. “Their big kid (McKenna Stephens) is as good as any we’ve seen all year. She’s a tough matchup, especially with our size,” coach Schlabach said. “I thought Jasmine (Goings) battled. We made Stephens work.” Lake coach Henry Cobb said his team was excited about coming down to play Hiland.

But Notre Dame caught a big break when star USC quarterback Matt Barkley was injured in a game against UCLA one week earlier. Snyder scored inside early in the third quarter, the 1,000th point of her career. She finished with 10 for the game to go with six rebounds. “It was kind of embarrassing, really, in front of all these people,” the humble junior said. “She is the seventh person all-time at West Holmes to score 1,000 points,” said Patterson. “It’s an honor for her, but I’m glad it’s behind her. Laina’s not a person who focuses on things individually.” West Holmes led 43-27 after three as Strother drilled another 3-pointer and Macaulay scored inside. “They are so fundamental. And they are so efficient offensively,” Hoover coach Abbey Allerding said. “They exposed us on defense. This was a great opportunity to play against a great team.
