Pancake breakfast planned to benefit John A pancake and sausage breakfast to benefit John Henry Beechy will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 from 7-11 a.m. The benefit will be held at Yoder Lumber Company’s Berlin branch located at 4515 Township Road 367. Beechy, of Saltillo, worked at Yoder Lumber’s Berlin location until about a year ago when he was hospitalized. He has been unable to
work since that time and has spent considerable time in the hospital and is still recovering. His fellow employees have decided to have this benefit as a way to help with his medical expenses. Lana Rush had the program, reading “Its Your Move — Now Exercise.” It said maintaining strength is critical for mobility. Physical activity is necessary for good physical and mental health. Physical activity prevents Alzheimer’s and ventral dementia. Brisk walking for 150 minutes or 75 minutes of jogging were recommended. The next meeting will be the annual Christmas Party at the Nashville United Methodist Church. Everyone is to take a covered dish and a $5 gift to exchange. Weigh-in will be at 5 p.m., with dinner at 5:30 p.m.
Stepping Stones Mothers League A Christmas dinner was enjoyed by members of Stepping Stones Mothers League when they met Dec. 6 at the home of Kim Jacobs. An ornament exchange followed. Charm Engine, Ltd, just one quarter mile north of Charm, was selected by Snapper Pro to host their Regional Service Training. Snapper Pro is a division of Briggs and Stratton, offering 35 brands of equipment. “Snapper Pro provides service training to more than 40 dealers each year,” says Commercial Sales Manager Jeff Wright. “Snapper Pro invites and hosts dealers to assist them in learning to better service their customers by fixing the product right the first time.” In addition to the hands-on experience, ongoing training is available through the website. There were 47 service technicians representing 17 dealerships that attended the service training on Thursday, Dec. 6. “Typically, the training is held at a hotel,” stated Andy Doan, who conducts the training sessions. “This is the first time dealers in this region experienced top-notch sales and marketing here at Charm Engine. This one-day training event has given dealers a chance to network with other dealers to pick up ways to improve shop organization.”

It’s tough to keep up in eclectic neighborhood Across the street from my house an eight-foot polar bear in a Santa hat grazes, face down on clover and acorns. His owners are seemingly unable to grasp the idea that the beast was meant to remain upright and could easily do so if he were simply held to the ground with anything beyond the electrical cord that breathes life into his ample nylon carcass from a small fan in his bottom. Around the corner, a penguin the size of a sixth-grader hugs a giant candy cane while three elves stand, hand in hand, around a naked Dogwood tree as if it’s about to mystically bristle with needles, bulbs and tinsel. Just down the street, “Jack” tries desperately, night after night, to bank enough air in his behind to escape out the top of what appears to be a brightly-colored refrigerator box with a phony crank handle on the side. Creatures of the night, all; in the morning they will lay about the lawn like freshman frat boys after their first all-night keg party. On my own front
porch an un-carved pumpkin continues to pull double duty as both a Halloween and Thanksgiving decoration. (This should come as no real surprise as everyone knows I’m the kind of guy that gets the most out of his produce dollar.) And while Kristin loves to lament the fact that our decorations typically remain stashed in the attic of the garage until a week or so before Christmas, she’s no more willing than I am to face the hopeless tangle of half-lit lights, extension cords and faux greenery in the name of holiday cheer. Only when we are eventually overcome with a wave of nostalgia will either of us actually act. It wasn’t always this way. Long ago when our kids were young we all made a pretty big deal out of stringing the lights and setting up the incredible eight-
foot-long “Santa and his reindeer” that had been carefully jig-sawed from a single sheet of plywood, then lovingly hand-painted by the previous owners of our house. This crew had miraculously escaped the auction that had emptied the place before we took possession — this by hiding in the rafters above the garage door. We were convinced the “real”
Santa actually left his likeness just for us. I had a lot of “help” back in those days, and the kids worked for cheap. A cup of hot chocolate and a couple of candy canes could buy a good half-hour of untangling (and oftentimes, retangling) strings of colored lights while all the while angling to be the first kid of the season to throw the big switch. Good times, indeed.

But they didn’t take blood, which they should have done, and when questioned about it, informed us they had no “order.” Back to the waiting room. An hour and a half went by, patients came and went. Finally we heard our name called and we were ushered into a room. More waiting. Finally the doctor arrived only to discover that previous test results had been lost, no blood had been taken when we arrived so that he would have results from that, so he really couldn’t do much except order that the blood test they didn’t do before now be taken, and we would have to wait for the results. So after a three-hour wait, the only

thing we accomplished was to schedule more tests and make another appointment! Then it was on to the dealer who just recently sold us a new car. After having it only a month it was recalled due to possibly catching on fire. We hadn’t even had time to figure out what all those buttons with those funny little pictures on them were for! I was under the impression that in order to get a driver’s license you had to take a written test, which meant you had to be able to read. So why do all car manufacturers put buttons in cars with weird little pictures on them? Why can’t they just put a word on them so they aren’t so hard to figure out? Arriving there and handing over the keys to our new car, we were told that the company didn’t know what was causing the problem, they didn’t know how to fix the

Meet Mr. Infraspinatus, the rotator cuff muscle The infraspinatus has a funny name, and maybe you haven’t heard of it, but odds are good that you used yours today. Sure, you’ve got an infraspinatus. So, what is it? Well, it is a dense, flat muscle that fits tightly against the back of the shoul-
der blade and is shaped roughly like a triangle. It is one of the four

muscles of the rotator cuff (no, it isn’t “rotator cup”) — the muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint and help give it a diverse range of motion. All of these soft tissues have attachments on the scapula, or shoulder blade, and each one has a unique role to play when it contracts. You’ve probably known someone who has had a rotator cuff tear, which occurs when the tendon of one or more of these muscles actually rips. This can be a minor or more complete tear and can happen from repetitive motion, an overload of the muscle (like heavy lifting) or simply from wear and tear. Unfortunately, as we get older, our muscles and connective tissue often become less elastic and weaken. One way that the infraspinatus, in particular, can be injured is in the slowing down movement just following a throwing

action. Baseball players are prone to rotator cuff injuries, and this explains why. Still, you don’t have to repeatedly throw a 90 mile per hour fast ball to develop problems in this area. You might simply have reached into your back pocket or tossed a rock into a pond a bit harder than usual. Of course those movements might just be “the last straw,” which was preceded by numerous other strains. Indicators that you may have had some level of strain to the infraspinatus are rigidity, deep pain at the front of the shoulder joint and weakness or a sense of fatigue in the shoulder. There are a variety of strengthening exercises for this muscle, and stretching doesn’t hurt either. However, if you already have pain or other problems, the first and best step is to receive soft-tissue treatment that will relieve inflammation, release restricted areas and promote healing. Rotator cuff injuries can often be treated quite suc-
cessfully with massage therapy, but severe tears do require surgery. Another thing people usually notice when infraspinatus is the main culprit is that they can’t sleep on the sore side because it compresses the shoulder joint, causing further discomfort. They also can’t lie on the other shoulder because as they fall asleep, the injured shoulder moves forward, stretching and aggravating the condition and waking them up. If you are counting, you know that such a person has now run out of shoulders to sleep on. In fact, some people who struggle with this situation even end up propping themselves up in armchairs to get some semblance of a comfortable night’s rest. If you are working through a shoulder injury and suspect the infraspinatus might be the source, there is one simple tip that does help with sleeping. Try putting a pillow in front of you and lying on the
uninjured side. Prop your injured-side arm on the pillow. This can allow you to get some needed rest, but obviously it doesn’t put an end to the problem. In a way, I feel like the infraspinatus itself asked for this column to be written. You see, every now and then I get a wave of clients with the same or quite similar complaints. Lately, I’ve seen a number of people who all have “infraspinatus issues.” I decided it was time to say a few words about this little-known muscle. So, now that you’ve met infraspinatus, I may have to write a column or two more about his counterparts in the rotator cuff. The computer and Internet basic training is being presented through Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties’ Workforce Development program. Mostly I want to live up to the challenge and the memories of my youth, when the star brushing against the ceiling was all my parents really wanted for Christmas. You know how, when you look back at the way your parents acted when you were a child, you stop and chuckle and wonder deep down in your heart if you missed something because there’s no way they could have been that nutty on purpose? That’s how I feel during the annual event that is the Christmas tree. In my own life, I just can’t imagine trying to tackle anything near
to what they did. (I think they must have sniffed a little too much eggnog.) But these are my memories, my wonderful and crazy memories. We used to borrow my grandfather’s brown El Camino, whose nickname I cannot disclose to anyone outside my family. He loved that vehicle and it surprises me to this day that he’d let us drive it out into what we thought was the country on dark snowy nights. It always used to be dark and snowy when we got our Christmas tree. Global warming is really ruining this for our kids. Off we’d go, my father driving, my mother white-knuckling the

The Nativity scene was set up under the tree, and while I moved the Three Wise Men around to bring their gifts to the Baby Jesus, my mom would carefully place the star on the top so that it just barely touched the tip of the vaulted ceiling. When it was finished, boxes were simply stashed away, the bright lights turned dim, and with the soft glow of the giant tree, Willie Nelson sang me to sleep. Arrested for underage consumption, Pasterchek was taken to the Holmes County Jail, from which he was later released on his own recognizance. Some of the guests were over 21; many were not. Deputies found many open containers throughout the home and around the property. In total five deputies, assisted by an officer from Nashville Police Department, responded to the scene and helped provide transportation to the Holmes County Jail. Between the road and corrections divisions, officers were occupied for hours responding to the incident. In the jail, where midnight shift staffing was reduced from four to three during budget cuts four years ago, two additional officers were used to help in the booking and bonding process, according to Capt. Pam Akins. “It’s just time consuming. You have to check them in, process them, fingerprint and do their bonds. And, while all posted bond, many remained for several hours, causing an additional break-
fast time strain on the jail kitchen and its staff. The Holmes County Jail can house up to 63 inmates at a time. Prior to the early Sunday arrival of young partygoers the census was more than 40, and Akins said corrections officers had to make use of the holding cells and indoor recreation area to keep the incoming arrestees confined. Akins said her staff did a good job effectively processing those who were arrested, and she’s glad that, because all made bond, she is not having to consider a temporary increase in staffing, which would require payment of overtime wages. She’s also thankful none of those arrested appeared to be overly intoxicated, which requires additional attention from staff, who are required to monitor their medical conditions. Of underage partying, Renker said the sheriff’s office takes reports seriously, “but for us to go in, we have to have a legitimate complaint and something to act on. We definitely go and treat them all the same, east and west.” “Our concern is some-

An anonymous noise complaint called into the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office at 11:40 p.m. prompted deputies to respond to the large party at 15176 state Route 39, Loudonville, according to Capt. Dale Renker, who said, when they got to the area “they could hear loud music, yelling and screaming.” Their arrival brought more excitement to the party, prompting many guests to flee into a nearby field and others to seek refuge inside the house, said Renker, adding those trying to hide in the house were eventually arrested. It is yet unclear what brought all the partygoers to the residence, said Renker, who said one of the home’s occupants, 19-year-old Seth James Pasterchek, was found locked out of the residence and had to force entry to the home to get

Obituaries Deloris Daugherty, 87 Deloris E. Daugherty, 87, of Shreve, d i e d Monday morning, Dec. 3, 2012, at West V i e w Manor Healthy Living, Wooster, after a courageous battle with dementia. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 3, 1925, in Gilstrap. Ky., to Charles “Porter” and Vercie (Baize) Amos and married William R. “Bill” Daugherty on Feb. 24, 1942, in Wooster. He survives. She had been a Wayne County resident most of her life, and was a devoted wife and homemaker, who loved spending time with family throughout the years. She was a longtime member of Wooster Nazarene Church, where she was very involved with numerous activities including, teaching children Sunday school and Bible school classes, co-taught along with her husband, senior high classes for more than 25 years, was in charge of funeral meals for 20 years and the Easter ministry meals for seven years.
She was an avid reader, collected dolls and enjoyed gardening. Surviving in addition to her beloved husband, are children, James (Esther) Daugherty of Shreve, Elaine (Paul) Lehman, Yvonne (Ken) Wise, Dan and Sherry Daugherty, all of Wooster; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-greatgrandchild; and brothers Garland Amos of Wooster and Robert (Janice) Amos of Morgantown, Ky. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother; another brother, Earl Daye; and sisters, Lorene Franks and Inez Thomasetti. Services were Thursday, Dec. 6 at Wooster Church of the Nazarene, with Pastors Nathan Ward and Wade Brill officiating. Interment was in Sherwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Wooster. He was born in Holmes County on Oct. 19, 1932, to the late Jacob J. and Mary Ann B. (Yoder) Yoder and married Betty M. Hochstetler on Oct. 4, 1956. She survives. He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Maxine Miller, 82 Maxine Miller, 82, of Shreve, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the home of her granddaughter, Shelly ( B i l l ) Dickson, with family around her. Maxine was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Holmes County, the daughter of the late Ralph and Lucille (Shoup) Franks and grew up in Shreve. She was a 1948 graduate of Big Prairie High School and lived most of her life in the Shreve area. On Feb. 15, 1957, she married Donald Miller. He preceded her in death. She retired after working 20 years at Rubbermaid Inc. and was a member of Bigelow United Methodist Church and Ripley Garden Club. Surviving are children, Betty Jean (Don) Horst of Loudonville, Connie (Kenny) Mullen of Wooster, Joanne Tate of Shreve, Jill (Roger) Edington of Wooster, Jay (Linda) Miller of Killbuck, Jane Miller of Shreve and a stepdaughter,

Lewis Ash, 66 Lewis E. Ash, 66, of Ashland passed into his eternal life on Dec. 6, 2012 at Wo o s t e r Community Hospital with his family by his side, following a long period of declining health. Lewis was born on Feb. 20, 1946 in Spencer, W. Va., to Jesse and Rosie Lee Ash. He married Sue Hopkins, his lifelong partner and best friend, on Nov. 21, 1969. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three daughters, Jodi (Jeff) Ashbaugh of New Philadelphia, LuAnn (Carl) Yoakem of Millersburg and Beth (David) Case of Shreve; seven grandchildren, Amy and Tyler Jaquet, Kyle and Nick Yoakem, Lauralie, Emily and Colin Case; one great-grandson, Jacob Jaquet; his brother, Willard (Virginia) Ash of Smithville; and his sister, Shirley (Marvin) Armburst of Wadsworth. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-
law, Martin Hopkins; and his sister, Carol Ritchey. Lewis served in the United States Army during Vietnam. He worked for Orrville Products for 27 years. He liked to travel, hunt, fish and he especially liked spending time with his family. Words cannot express the deep sorrow we feel at the loss of such a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Lewis was a loving provider, protector and the best husband and father anyone could ever hope to have. One of Lewis’s greatest joys was when he acquired his home in the country in Ashland County, where he enjoyed time with family and quiet evenings with his wife. He will be missed and forever loved. Lydia Stoltzfus, 79 Lydia Mae (Hochstetler) Stoltzfus of Howard, 79 years, 7 months and 22 days, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, 2012, at her residence in rural Howard, where she had lived the past six years. Lydia was born April 13, 1933, in Nappanee, Ind., the daughter of the late Levi R. and Tillie (Schmucker) Hochstetler. On July 21, 1983, she married Nicholas Stoltzfus. He died Oct. 18, 2004. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and remained faithful until her death. In 1969, she moved to Honduras to work in a children’s home, and it was there she adopted two boys; her sons, John Mark (Lisa) Hochstetler of Holmesville and Robert Hochstetler of the home. Get better, or get beat I cannot believe how people are reacting — and over-reacting — to the score of a recent Hiland girls basketball game, that the Hawks won 89-5 over Tuscarawas Central Catholic. “Oh they should be ashamed of themselves.” Ashamed!? Why, for working hard in practice and dedicating themselves to performing well as a team? “I hope they called off the dogs and didn’t press in the second half.” They didn’t press after the first quarter. In fact, 12 different players had been in the game by the end of the first quarter. The sad truth is, even the 12th Hawk player was 10 times better than any of the five on the floor for TCC. And what is the coach supposed to do, tell the 12th player, “hey, you’re in, but you can’t play too hard because we might hurt the other team’s feelings.” These kids earn their minutes on the floor. A great example of this is how many times over the years, I have seen players at Hiland diving on the floor for a loose ball even though their team was well ahead. Getting that loose ball was worth diving for, because it meant that maybe the coach would

recognize the hustle, and give that player a few more minutes of welldeserved playing time. The sad part is, there are too many schools out there like Conotton Valley and TCC that field teams in sports that they would be better off just playing a JV schedule. When these teams are in the same conference, they are forced to play each other twice. Believe me, it is not any more fun for the winning team to give up a game against a worthy opponent than it is for the team on the receiving end of a 50-point beat down. The good teams have more challenge in practice than they do against some of these lesser teams. I sat in the stands listening to one mother complain every trip down the floor for the referee to call a foul. I wanted to tap her on the shoulder and explain to her that what she was seeing was not a foul. That’s a thing called defense, something her team hasn’t seen, let alone practiced. I have been to a number of sporting events this year in which the sides were so unevenly matched that the games were over minutes after they started, but the games were played out. Earlier this week, the returning third-place Div. II state-placer tweeted “I got better today already and its only 7:02 am! #getsome.” Rohskopf took several more steps toward reaching the top of the podium in Columbus this March when he won a championship at the 42nd annual Wayne Invitational Tournament held at Smithville’s Berkey Field House. “On a lot of days I’m up at 5:30 a.m. and get in a lift and run before school,” said Rohskopf (7-0), who used a cradle to pin Dalton’s Drew Everett for his fourth WIT title and wound up earning his second Most Valuable Wrestler award there. “Every year since seventh and eighth grade I’ve set my goals higher. “At first I didn’t have that high of goals, just to go to state. Once I got a taste of it, I wanted to place and now that I’ve done it, that’s not enough. I want to be a state champion.” Rohskopf was the lone champion among West Holmes’ seven top-four placers, helping the Knights to a runner-up finish with 171 points. He notched pins in 24 seconds and 1:04 to reach the WIT finals. “I think Max is in pretty good shape right now,” West Holmes coach Jeff Woods said. “We’ll really find out where we’re at in a couple weeks at the MIT (Medina Invitational Tournament).” Garrett Hall won another interesting matchup as he defeated
fellow freshman Cole Woods from West Holmes, 9-1. “It feels good to win my first high school tournament,” said Garrett, who put Woods on his back twice in the final period. “I was nervous because I know they’re all tough in that (Woods) family.” Cole Woods was a good sport afterward, saying, “I’m happy with it. Back-to-back, no problem for Knights By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer West Holmes started strong and finished strong in posting a 62-52 triumph over Lexington in an Ohio Cardinal Conference clash Saturday in the Dungeon. The Knights showed no signs of fatigue after back-to-back nights of action. And they needed every ounce of energy, as Lexington brought an intensity that required 32 minutes of action. The Knights jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the opening eight minutes of action behind Brady Arnold. The junior sparkplug ignited a 13-2 run, turning three steals into layups after busting a 3-point-
er to start the game. He scored nine of his 22 points in the first quarter. “He’s such a solid player. He’s one of those guys you hope to contain, because you know you’re not going to stop him,” first-year Lexington coach Scott Hamilton said. The Minutemen closed to within four points (48-44) midway through the fourth quarter, but Gabe Snyder scored inside. The Knights’ defense forced a miss and then Grant Hay split a pair of free throws to make it 51-44. Again, the defense came up big with a steal and coast-to-coast layup by Michael Dewitt. And then another bucket inside by Brock Macaulay helped the
Knights seal the victory down the stretch. “That’s the sign of a veteran team at this point,” West Holmes coach Jim Lindeman said. “There’s not a lot of nervousness. Sanderson wanted to see where his team stood after its 3-0 start, and a visit to the Dungeon for a date with West Holmes was as good a place to find out as any. After the Titans dropped their first game 60-29 to the 5-0 Knights, Sanderson saw his team still has a ways to go. The Knights scored the first eight points of the game as Laina Snyder scored six inside and Natalie Abraham added another score from close range. After Micah Findley scored on a layup to get the Titans on the board, Rachelle Morrison busted a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Knights an 11-2 advantage. Abraham added two more scores to give West Holmes a 15-4 lead after the opening eight minutes of action. “We’re not the first team they’re going to do this to this year,” Sanderson said. “They’ve done it a lot and they’re going to continue to do it. They’re that good. They are one of the best teams we’re going to play all year. “They’re tough to guard. You take away the paint, they kick it out to their shooters,” Sanderson added. “Try and take away the shooters and they attack off the dribble. If you jump the ball with two people, they
drop it down to Snyder, and Laina’s just a handful to guard.” The junior sometimes post, sometimes guard of the Knights led the assault with another allaround impressive game, scoring 21 points to go with 10 rebounds (seven on the offensive end), four assists and three steals. “She’s tough to defend. She can do everything,” West Holmes coach Lisa Patterson said of Snyder. “Inside, outside and her rebounding … that creates so much when she can come in and clean up the glass like she does.” The Knights extended their lead to 29-6 in the second quarter as the West Holmes defense

It is more the result of one team’s willingness to work hard and excel, and another’s to be a perennial doormat. I think back to the lyrics of an old Eagles song when I hear people whine about sporting events and scores: “Get over it.”
