Stay Safe, Get Educated Get Educated! Most people have tons of fun when engaging in hunting, fishing, and boating activities. It’s a chance to test your skills, bond with family and friends, and get your exercise. However, we all hear of occasional tragedies that result in loss of life or disability. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by making sure you know the best practices for your sport. And make sure you learn the techniques to make your hunt or fishing successful. There are a lot of local opportunities for learning your sport. Hunting and Trapping New hunters are required to successfully complete a hunter education course. The Ohio Division of Wildlife offers three types of hunter certification courses: instructor-led training, home-study courses, and proficiency testing for those ages 18 and older. Trappers must complete both a hunter education course and a trapper education course. These courses are offered free of charge. The instructor led courses last from 8 to 12 hours and occur in classrooms. A popular activity for children that is held each year is the Kicking Bear One-on-One Archery Shoot and Campout. The Friday night/ all-day Saturday event focuses on teaching children basis archery skills but also offers exposure to other outdoor activities. The Kicking Bear event provides children with a mentoring relationship with willing adults who are involved in the outdoors. Ages 5 to 15 are the preferred ages for
this activity, but no one is turned away. According to Susan Jividen, Program Director, “We also can arrange archery, riflery, and canoeing instruction for any age group.
