FreshAire CPAP FreshAire CPAP & Supplies is a locally-owned medical supply company in Wooster, Ohio that specializes in patients with sleepdisordered breathing, known widely as sleep apnea. Established in 2016, we are dedicated to providing products and services to patients in Wooster and surrounding communities. We also recognize that the physicians, nurses, and sleep labs are equally part of the community we serve, and we strive for continuity of care between them and their patients. At FreshAire CPAP, we choose to focus on a single service and excel in it. We enthusiastically promote patient education and love helping people. We will look for solutions for each person, knowing that every individual has unique needs and circumstances. We have a store front capable of providing CPAP and BiPAP machines, masks, tubing and other supplies and accessories. Current CPAP users find this very helpful. For those just getting started, we take time to demonstrate their new equipment, fit them with a mask and show them how to keep their equipment clean and working great.

But whether you are a seasoned veteran CPAP user or new to the world of sleep apnea, we will always invite you back to our office for one-on-one time to answer any questions or concerns, fit or re-fit a mask, run a usage report or simply inspect your machine – all free of charge. We strive to always give people a positive experience. Quality and quantity of sleep play an extensive role in our overall health. We help patients understand the adverse effects of untreated sleep apnea and the benefits of managing it with CPAP. We believe that if patients understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of their treatment, their success and commitment to that treatment increases. We also offer low prices for self-pay customers. With high deductibles and insurance companies only paying for supplies at certain times, this option is very beneficial. For those with busy work schedules, we are open until 7 p.m. every Tuesday. Stop in to see us at 2910 Cleveland Road, Wooster! Call us at 330-601-1991 with any questions or visit our website at www.FreshAireCPAP.com for our hours of operation.

Sleep loss can affect memory in seniors

can impair a person’s ability to focus and learn efficiently. Combine this with the necessity of sleep to make those brain wave connections for memories to be stored, and the importance of deep sleep is apparent. Another study, published in the journal Brain, conducted by doctors at Washington University in St. Louis, linked poor sleep with early onset of dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease. Although poor sleep does not cause Alzheimer’s, it may increase brain amyloid proteins believed to be intrinsic to the disease. When slow-wave deep sleep is disrupted, levels of amyloid can grow and clog the brain. This is corroborated by data published in the journal Neurology. Getting deep sleep is important for reducing these proteins. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recognizes the difficulties elderly people may have in regard to sleep. The quality of deep sleep among older adults is often 75 percent lower than it is in younger people. Doctors can be cognizant of how sleep impacts memory and the onset of dementias and discuss insomnia treatment options with their patients.

Poor sleep can leave people feeling groggy, disoriented, depressed, and not up for facing the day. And now there’s new evidence that insomnia can contribute to memory loss and forgetfulness among the elderly. A study — the first of its kind — unveiled a new link between lack of sleep and memory loss. Researchers at the University of California, Berkley found that during sleep important brain waves are produced that play key roles in storing memories. These waves transfer the memories from the hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex, a portion of the brain where long-term information is stored. Sleep loss can cause the memories to remain in the hippocampus and not reach the long-term storage area, found researchers. This can contribute to forgetfulness and difficulty remembering simple details, such as names. Seniors are frequently plagued with deteriorated sleeping patterns that lead to shallow sleep and more awakenings, says those at the University of California. This can contribute to the prevention of memories being saved by the brain each evening. This is not the first time sleep and brain health have been measured. A 2008 University of California, Los Angeles study discovered that people with sleep apnea showed tissue loss in brain regions that help store memories. WebMD says imaging and behavioral studies show the role sleep plays in learning and memory and that lack of sleep

Milltown Family Physicians A Strong Community Presence A year ago most people had never heard of Wuhan, China. The likelihood of any of us making a large global cultural impact is slim. But we can focus on impacting the people we come in contact with every day. What would you expect during a pandemic from the largest family practice in the community of Wooster Ohio? Would you expect them to close their doors to the needs of the 23,000 patients they serve? Or would you expect them to create a triage system to handle this novel virus event so that the ongoing health needs of so many could be assessed and treated? A family practice’s capacity to grow is parallel to their capacity to lead and Milltown Family did just that. They pivoted quickly to meet the needs of their patients, obtaining and offering outpatient testing before anyone else in the area. They quickly added antibody testing for people who suspected they had contracted the virus. They pivoted quickly to provide visits via office or telehealth, for the effective treatment their patients. They continued to work tirelessly to meet the needs of the people in this community. All the normal everyday health issues did not go away under the threat of a pandemic. The staff and providers worked as a team to continue to address patient issues, healing never stopped. They stood toe-to-toe with a nasty threat and continue to work tirelessly to procure health and well-being for whomever they could. A pandemic can reveal much about a family practice whose dedication is unwavering. Milltown Family Physicians has revealed their complete dedication to their patients. Milltown Family Physicians moved through the last six months with one major focus……to care of others. Dr. Eric Smith, also served as the Wayne County Medical Director and Director of Viola Startzman Clinic. Dr. Paul Nielsen, continued to work at Wooster Community Hospital and manage several nursing facilities as Medical Director, Dr. Amy Jolliff maintained her position at MFP while also continuing to serve the community as County Coroner, Dr. John Schinner increased his education on respiratory management and the use of respirators to be available should the need arise, Dr. Christopher Ranney continued his work with local businesses and clinic’s, Dr. John Prokop, the newest physician at MFP, like all physicians and NP’s at MFP, volunteered and prepared to

back-up the hospital should the need arise. Certainly the providers at Milltown Family have earned the respect of this community but so have the staff whose dedication is unquestionable. Staff members not only worked with diligence over the last few months in the office but took it upon themselves to reach out to the community. They were involved in community service like working at soup kitchens to prepare take-out meals to those in need, as well as sending donations. When one staff member heard of an elderly woman alone with no assistance on getting groceries, the staff member bought groceries and took them to the woman’s door step. The staff reached out via phone to the isolated chronically ill to confirm they were doing well and did not need anything. The patients at MFP were wonderful, many donated homemade masks, sent goodies and lunches to the staff, these and treats like skin care items and other gifts were very much appreciated. Milltown Family Physicians has been a strong presence in this community since 1981. Milltown Family Physicians commitment to patients and community has remained stellar and through the lens of a pandemic you will see not only a strong vibrant group but a dedicated selfless group of people willing to serve. As if this is not enough to set them apart as a quality practice, then add to the list: • • • •

Open access scheduling Many basic procedures performed in the office 24/7 access to a physician for emergency needs Most Insurances accepted And more………

Please visit the website to see more options available at this mission driven Family Practice. www.milltownfamily. com or call the office at 330-345-8060 Moving forward MFP will continue to be a strong presence in the community for no one can survive well in a chaotic world without the offer of strong hands to pull you through i

Suicide and social distancing Suicide is a significant issue across the globe. According to SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education), nearly 800,000 people die by suicide across the globe each year, and suicide is the second leading cause of death in the world for people between the ages of 15 and 24. Suicide poses a significant threat every year, but that threat might be even greater in 2020. The global pandemic that resulted from the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in the winter of 2019-20 led many governments to encourage their citizens to isolate to help prevent the spread of the virus. While such restrictions were necessary, a study published in the medical journal JAMA Psychiatry in April 2020 noted that the secondary consequences of social distancing may include an increased risk of suicide. The researchers behind the study noted that social connections play a key role in suicide prevention, which is why social distancing concerns so many mental health professionals. However, the researchers also emphasized that social distancing requires physical space between people, not social distance. By staying six feet apart and wearing masks when around friends and loved ones, individuals at risk for suicide can maintain the social connections that are so vital to their mental health. SAVE notes that a lack of social support and a sense of isolation are a risk factor for suicide. But other factors also can increase suicide risk, and learning to recognize those risks can be especially important at a time when social distancing may be putting more people in jeopardy.

SAVE notes that risk factors do not cause or predict suicide. However, the presence of the following factors can increase the likelihood a person will consider, attempt or die by suicide. • Mental disorders, particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and certain personality disorders • Alcohol and other substance use disorders • Hopelessness • Impulsive and/or aggressive tendencies • History of trauma or abuse • Major physical or chronic illnesses • Previous suicide attempt • Family history of suicide • Recent job or financial loss • Recent loss of relationship • Easy access to lethal means • Local clusters of suicide • Stigma associated with asking for help • Lack of health care, especially mental health and substance abuse treatment • Cultural and religious beliefs, such as the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma • Exposure to others who have died by suicide (in real life or via the media and Internet) People concerned about themselves or a loved one in crisis can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1.800.273.8255 in the United States.

Walnut Hills Retirement Community Walnut Hills Retirement Community has been serving Holmes and Wayne Counties and the surrounding area for more than 49 years. Since it began in June of 1971 with a 50-bed nursing home, Walnut Hills has been dedicated to providing exceptional, compassionate care and making additions and improvements to meet the changing needs and desires of area residents and their families. Today as a non-profit, faith-based continuing care living community, Walnut Hills offers a variety of living options on a 110-acre campus in the rolling hills of Walnut Creek. In addition to skilled nursing care, the Walnut Hills campus today offers independent living homes, catered living apartments, assisted living suites, inpatient rehabilitation at a transitional care unit, and outpatient therapies. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has rated the Walnut Hills Nursing Home as a 5-star facility, and Walnut Hills received a “Best Nursing Home’ distinction from U.S. News. “Our high ratings and the high quality care at Walnut Hills can be attributed to our hardworking team members who truly care about the individuals they are caring for,” said Rob Aneshansel, Executive Director. “Our team members are always willing to go the extra mile.” No matter the level of care an individual needs, the continuing care provided at Walnut Hills gives a sense of security for residents in knowing that extra help is available when they need it, and the outstanding care brings peace of mind to family and friends who can be assured that their loved one is being well cared for. Walnut Hills is committed to providing opportunities for individuals to continue with hobbies, pursue ongoing improvement, and make choices to live a healthy and fulfilling life. A couple of the recent additions to help fulfill this commitment include a Mini Farm and the ‘Road to Home’ program. The Mini Farm is located outside the Nursing Home and is home to several goats and chickens. The animals have provided hours of entertainment and many smiles and happy memories for Walnut Hills’ residents. The‘Road to Home’program provides individuals a comfortable, engaging environment to get stronger and more confident before they return home following a skilled/rehabilitation stay or after a hospital procedure, illness, or emergency room visit. ‘Road to Home’ features fully furnished rooms that are located in Evergreen Place, a peaceful, cozy area of the Walnut Hills assisted living facility. The program provides three daily meals, housekeeping and laundry services, and access to 24/7 nursing and personal services, including medication administration and wound care. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy services are available on site, as well.

The thriving Walnut Hills campus also has a fitness room for individuals to improve physical wellness without leaving campus; a craft room for individuals to sew, quilt, or work on other craft projects; an updated woodworking shop for resident craftsmen to work on projects; and a beautiful Community Park that features nature trails, sitting areas, fire-rings, a pavilion for picnics, and many areas for bird watching. “We are always looking to find ways to support the needs of our community and the interests of those who live on our campus,” said Aneshansel. “We want to be a place where individuals can enjoy life and rely on us to sweat the big and small stuff.” Walnut Hills is located just a short, scenic drive from Wooster and Millersburg, on Olde Pump Street in Walnut Creek. Walnut Hills is home to 250 people, employs 170 individuals, and is an affiliate of Greencroft Communities, Inc. of Goshen, Indiana. For more information about care options at Walnut Hills, call 330-893-3200 or visit www.walnuthillsliving.org.that medications you take are covered by a plan you are considering before buying the plan. Wooster Community Hospital One of the 100 Best Hospitals in the U.S. Having been recognized as one of the 100 best hospitals by Fortune/IBM Watson Health for the third consecutive year, Wooster Community Hospital may just be the best performing medical facility in the country, reasoned Bill Sheron president and CEO. “This year, we were ranked at the very top of all ‘Medium Sized Community Hospitals,’ which is the largest and the most competitive of all of the five categories considered,” Sheron said. This marks the sixth time Wooster Community Hospital has earned the Top 100 distinction from IBM Watson Health. The annual list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health. IBM Watson Health said it established the list to help identify best practices that may help other healthcare organizations to achieve consistent, balanced and sustainable high performance. The annual list was unveiled on Fortune.com in June. “Being the Number One hospital in our size category is remarkable,” Sheron said. “We believe this is the most objective, balanced and prestigious quality award any hospital can win. It considers not only how strong your performance is in comparison to other U.S. hospitals, but it also demands that you continue to perform better over time. It’s a team award that we are all proud to achieve. The fact that we have now won this award a total of six times – including the last three years in a row – is a clear and resounding testament to the work done by our outstanding staff and our continuing commitment to improving patient care.” To earn the award, hospitals are judged on performance metrics like how quickly they get people through the emergency room, survival rates, patient complications, healthcare associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, inpatient expenses, profitability, and ratings from patients. “Those are all things that we grade ourselves on all the time.” Wooster Community’s category leading score was an improvement over last year, Sheron said. “Our aggregate score was in the 99.9th percentile,” he said. “Getting better year over year can be a challenge when we’re already getting the highest scores in the country. We feel like we’re at the top of our game.” Sheron said the recognition demonstrates Wooster Community Hospital’s ongoing commitment to prioritize

patient-centered care, particularly during this very disruptive and challenging time. Wooster Community Hospital’s Top 100 distinction is something the whole community can be proud of, Sheron said. “People in our community can be confident that when they need medical care, they have a really good hospital to go to,” he said. “We’re not a large, big city hospital, but we can handle more than 90 percent of all medical needs.” Wooster Community Hospital is a 172-bed, full-service and acute-care facility. You can learn more about Wooster Community Hospital at www.woosterhospital.org, or by calling 330-263-8144.

The outlook for nurses is very strong Many people consider the right job one that provides both a sense of fulfillment and the opportunity to achieve financial security and stability as one’s career advances. Given that criteria, the field of nursing should make for an attractive career path. The outlook for registered nurses, often referred to as “RNs,” is very strong. In its recent “Occupational Outlook Handbook,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, issued a highly favorable employment outlook for registered nurses. Estimating the projected percent change in employment between 2018 and 2028, the BLS estimated that employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 12 percent during that 10-year period. That’s more than double the average growth estimate for all occupations. The outlook is equally strong in Canada. According to the Canadian Occupation Projections System, which is provided by Employment and Social Development Canada, new job openings for registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses are expected to total 157,100 between 2017 and 2026. The ESDC anticipates a nursing shortage during that same period, estimating that only 143,900 new job seekers will be available to fill those positions. But that gap between job openings and qualified candidates means that nurses should not experience much difficulty in regard to finding work. While the outlook in terms of availability of work is strong for current nurses and those who aspire to one day follow this career path, that outlook should not alone compel people to

2020/2021 • Healthcare Guide

pursue a career in nursing. Few fields can be as demanding as nursing, which means not everyone is necessarily cut out to be a nurse. The demands are perhaps best exemplified by examining the hours registered nurses may expect to work, especially at the beginning of their careers when they have no seniority. The BLS notes that hospitals and nursing care facilities require round-theclock employees every day of the year. That means nurses can expect to work long hours on nights, weekends and holidays. That requires considerable sacrifice on the part of nurses, and those aspiring to enter this line of work should consider if they’re willing to make those sacrifices before enrolling in a nursing program. Estimates suggest the employment outlook for qualified nurses will be very strong over the next several years, which should compel more and more talented people to pursue this fulfilling career path.

Today there are 48 Community Action Agencies in the State of Ohio with every county receiving services. Serving the four Ohio counties of Knox, Holmes, Coshocton, and Ashland, Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action is governed by a 24 member Board of Directors, with multiple alternates, comprised of three sectors of local citizens. The Public Sector is represented by local officials or their appointees, the Private Sector is representative of local business or industry, and the LowIncome Sector encompasses citizens representing the interests of the low-income population. Each sector is equally represented by the four counties. Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland was incorporated in 1966 and has been providing over 50 years of service to those in need. We pride ourselves in being a multi-generational agency serving infants through the elderly with over 175 staff and 300 volunteers.

The purpose of the Reproductive Health and Wellness Program, formerly known as the Family Planning Program, is to improve the overall health and well-being of women, men, and teens by improving health care access and promoting healthy lifestyles to low-income, uninsured, and those who are under-insured. In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Family Planning Services Act, which was to provide adequate Family Planning services to all those who want them but cannot afford them. Kno-Ho-CoAshland CAC was one of the first Title X-Family Planning clinics established in Ohio and continues to provide quality services by professional team of health care staff. Pomerene Hospital The Care YOU Deserve. Pomerene Hospital has been providing high quality, specialty care to Holmes County and the surrounding area since 1937. The hospital is dedicated to care for its patients, not only with expertise, but with friendliness and compassion. Pomerene is committed to provide the expert care YOU deserve. The challenges of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic have not changed Pomerene’s commitment to topnotch service. In fact, CEO Jason Justus believes it has made it stronger. “It’s been a very challenging and interesting year,” he said. “But at the same time it’s been a very rewarding and exhilarating year. I have been extremely happy with the resiliency, flexibility and persistence of Pomerene in providing healthcare for the community. From the clinical staff to our Board of Directors, I really can’t say enough.” Leading the charge, Pomerene’s Emergency Department has gone above and beyond to protect its patients and employees and continue to provide the utmost care. The department runs the COVID-19 mobile testing site, which serves where and when patients need it. “Our ED did an amazing job staffing this and making it an asset to our community,” Justus said. The Pomerene Surgery Department also adapted quickly to ensure the safety of its patients with added precautions, while the physician practices implemented televisit options early on to continue to serve through virtual meetings. The hospital also appointed a COVID-19 Leadership Committee to ensure Pomerene has a wide view on the rapid information coming in and translating it into great care for its patients. “We will continue to carry out our mission: ‘To care for our community’s health in the best manner we can,’ ” Justus said. Pomerene encourages the community to not let these uncertain times keep people from staying on top of their healthcare, including preventative care and wellness exams. “While our processes may have changed a little bit when you walk in the door, what hasn’t changed is our overall emphasis on our patients’ safety and overall well-

being,” Justus said. “Allow us to show you that we can do that in a very safe and efficient manner.” This year Pomerene expanded its Nurse Navigator Program, which provides unparalleled service to patients who may need care outside of the Pomerene community. Patients work closely with an RN advocate who helps with the transition to a new facility or center to improve communication and level of care. “We think that this will be a very valuable asset to many parts of the community,” Justus said. Pomerene has other new additions this year to improve its services to its patients, including a 4D ultrasound for OB-GYN and Midwifery care. The hospital invested in ultraviolet robots to help with sanitization, a permanent MRI machine, a Nuclear Camera for radiology and cardiology and an expansion of its telehealth services. Along with new programs and technology, Pomerene continues to earn accolades for its service including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 5-Star Quality Rating, NorthCoast 99 Award as a top employer in Northeast Ohio and Lifeline Silver Plus Referring Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks. “We are proud of what we’ve achieved,” Justus said. “Even though this year has been challenging so far, our folks have stepped up in many ways and hopefully some of the awards and accolades will reinforce the strength that we have and what we offer to the community.” Through the pandemic, Justus said the community has been incredibly supportive. “I just want to say, ‘thank you.’ It was truly humbling the amount of support we received,” said Justus, noting the local health department, county commissioners, local businesses, the area’s emergency management group and Holmes County as a whole. “We really appreciate it.” To stay up to date on news, events and services, visit Pomerene Hospital on Facebook and its website at Pomerene.org.

Pycraft Family Eye Care When To Schedule An Eye Exam How long has it been since your last eye exam? A year? Two years? Even longer? How often should we be scheduling our eye exams, and what are some good reasons to come in between regular appointments? If you aren’t sure, then you’ve come to the right place! I’m here to discuss the reasons to schedule an eye appointment and how often everyone should have them! What Does A “Regular” Eye Exam Mean? Depending on your age and risk factors, how often you should have an eye exam will vary widely. Children should have their first eye exam around six months old, come back around their third birthday, and again before they start first grade. For patients age six to sixty whose vision health isn’t considered “at-risk,” an eye exam every other year is generally enough. After age sixty, frequency should increase to yearly eye exams. Your eye care professional will determine the best schedule for at-risk patients. Who are “At-Risk” patients? A few things can increase a person’s chances of developing an eye disease such as a

family history of eye diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration. Systemic conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes also have potential to damage the eye and cause permanent vision changes. Many prescription medications have vision-related side effects such as dry eye, and it’s important to monitor that so it doesn’t lead to other complications like an eye infection. Wearing contact lenses also increases the risk of infections which is why they often get annual eye exams. Here are a few reasons not to wait until the next one to come see us: • Blurry vision • Frequent headaches • Floaters or bright flashes • Light sensitivity • Difficulty driving at night How many times have you thought about how much you hate that puff of air? At Pycraft Family Eye Care we are an eye puff free facility! We now offer Icare tonometery to continued on page 16

Common terminology associated with illness outbreaks The novel coronavirus COVID-19 was the dominant story of the first months of 2020. As new information emerged and the virus spread from its epicenter in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, to other areas of Asia, Europe and the United States, various world health experts briefed the public on the proper protocol they believed would help stall the spread of this contagious virus.

The conveyance of this information introduced the public to terminology that previously may only have been known to those within the medical community. So that people may act in a productive and informed manner, here are common words and phrases associated with global health concerns. Community spread: The spread of a disease among a certain area in which there is no direct knowledge of how or when someone caught the disease. Epidemiology: This is a branch of medicine that deals with the incidence, distribution and possible control of disease, as well as patterns and determinants of illnesses. An epidemic is a situation when a disease spreads rapidly among many people and in higher concentrations than normal. Pandemic: This relates to the geographical spread of a disease that affects a whole country or the entire world, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pandemic does not refer to the severity or mortality of an illness, just how far it has traveled. PPE: This stands for “personal protective equipment.” The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says this is gear worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. PPE may include gloves, safety glasses, masks, and gowns in healthcare settings. Presumptive case: A presumptive case or presumptive positive case is one in which symptoms seemingly match the illness but a diagnosis has not yet been confirmed. A presumptive case is not a definitive case. Quarantine: This is a restriction on the movement of people and goods, which is intended to prevent the spread of pests or diseases. Quarantines may be mandated or voluntary. Social distancing: Social distancing refers to limiting contact or other interactions with people in an effort to help reduce the liklihood of disease contraction and spread. This largely involves modifying operations so that large crowds do not congregate at places like universities and colleges, sporting events, meetings, and conferences. Symptomatic: One who is symptomatic shows symptoms of a particular illness or disease. Understanding the terminology associated with widespread illnesses may compel people to take appropriate action. give you the most comfortable experience. The Icare Tonometer requires no drops and our staff has the specialized skills for its use. This device uses patented rebound technology to measure intraocular pressure (IOP). The IOP of the eye is an important measurement that can be an indication of many different eye diseases. I know that nobody likes drops, but many times they are necessary. With the addition of the Optomap Retinal Exam to our practice, we are pleased to offer the most advanced technology available to our patients. An Optomap exam is a new type of eye wellness scan that gives Dr. Pycraft an in depth view of the retinal layers in back of your eye (where diseases can start). It is recommended for people in all age groups. This examination allows the doctor to check for Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Retinal holes, retinal detachments, Diabetes, high blood pressure, and tumors. Although this technology gives us a 200 degree image of the back of the eye, it is by no means a guarantee that you won’t be dilated. How does herd immunity occur?

What is herd immunity? Infectious diseases can strike at any time. Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense. Other diseases can cause serious, even life-threatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission.

What is herd immunity?

Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease. If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD.

There are two ways that herd immunity can occur. The first is when resistance develops naturally when the body is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. After recovery, these antibodies are still circulating, and should exposure to the same disease occur again, the body can defend against another infection. Another way that herd immunity occurs is through vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that when the majority of people are vaccinated, it creates the same disease lockdown — fewer people get sick and fewer germs are able to spread from person to person. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will not be spreading as readily within their communities.

When is herd immunity reached?

When enough of a population is immune to a pathogen it prevents further spread and herd immunity is apparent. Continued on bottom of page 21

Cleveland Clinic Don’t delay. Cancer screenings save lives. For the past few months, life as we know it has been paused by COVID-19. Now that healthcare facilities in Ohio have resumed routine outpatient visits, it’s important to reschedule any preventive screenings or medical appointments that were canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. “The virus is still a concern, but so are other health issues like cancer,” says Paul Masci, DO, a specialist in hematology and medical oncology who treats patients at Cleveland Clinic Wooster Milltown Specialty & Surgery Center. “If you are ignoring symptoms or putting off seeing your doctor, don’t delay.” Symptoms of cancer can include: • Changes in bowel or bladder habits. • Cough or hoarseness that persists. • Easy bruising or bleeding. • Dizziness or vision troubles. • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin, whites of the eyes and mucous membranes). • New lumps anywhere, but especially new lumps of the breast. • Persistent fatigue, night sweats or unexplained infection or weight loss.

• Unexplained fever. • Unexplained skin moles, especially if they are dark or change color. “It’s important to continue to receive regular screenings, from mammograms and PAP smears to skin checks and colonoscopies,” says Dr. Masci. “While some cancers grow slowly, others Dr. Paul Masci grow quickly, so prompt diagnosis is key. A delay in diagnosis can transform a potentially curable cancer into one that is not.” Cleveland Clinic has all the measures in place to safely provide routine care which is critical for your long-term health. Learn more about the steps we’re taking to keep you safe at ClevelandClinic.org/Coronavirus. If you’re experiencing any symptoms or have questions about cancer screenings, please reach out to your primary care provider.

Continued from page 20

Diseases are different and herd immunity is reached based on the pathogen’s reproduction number, or R0. Essentially this boils down to how contagious the pathogen in question is. WebMD says the R0 tells the average number of people that a single person with the virus can infect if those people aren’t already immune. The higher the R0, the greater number of people will need to be resistant to reach herd immunity. Measles, which is very contagious at an R0 of 12 to 18, requires 93 to 95 percent of the population to be immune for herd immunity to be reached. The World Health Organization estimates the R0 for COVID-19 to be between 2 and 3. This means between 40 and 70 percent of the population will need to be immune to halt the spread. In the case of COVID-19, it’s still unclear whether anyone can get reinfected, and whether antibodies produced for one strain can fend off another strain of this novel coronavirus. This reinfection mystery is what makes herd immunity — both through a vaccine or through natural

exposure — challenging for epidemiologists in relation to COVID-19. Herd immunity is an important factor in disease prevention. Getting the facts about this phenomenon is important.
