Bonjour Division 9! How do you feel? I hope that all of you are having a fantastic summer so far! Time is flying by so quickly! In a blink of an eye, we‟re already in the middle of July. I know that some of you are busy throughout the whole summer; with all the prepping, summer school, work, etc. But always remember to take some time, to relax, and help out your community. Key Club is all year round; no matter what season it is, you should always find different opportunities, to change the community around you. Don‟t think I will let you guys go, since it‟s the summer. Hah, you are funny! In the month of August, Division 10 Lt. Governor Gresa Shala and I will be holding an inter-divisional on August 20th. This will be an officer only divisional. Don‟t worry, I will hold a September divisional for my lovely division! I am currently planning several summer fundraising events (such as a bowl-a-thon). I let you guys relax for the month of July; however, we should put back our “working” cap next month. On June 27th, Division 9 held a division beach hangout & eating contest! It was a successful event! Hopefully everybody that came had fun. Division 8 Lt. Governor Antonio Xu Liu took the 1st place for the eating contest. John Dewey took 2nd, and District Webmaster Oscar Tan took the 3rd place. Congratulations to the winners! Hopefully we‟re going to have another division hangout soon (maybe an officer hangout during the winter…)! Remember, as Key Club members, it is your responsibility to remain active throughout all year long. So step out from your couch and begin to serve for your community! Please don‟t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns! See you all soon! Yours In Service, Helen Chen NYDKC Lt. Gov. Division 9

GOVERNOR’S GREETINGS Hey New York District Key Club, I hope everyone‟s summer has been treating them well. Although I don‟t like to admit it, we‟re just about half way through, with a new school year drawing closer. As Key Club progresses during the Summer I would encourage you all to get involved and start planning and attending those projects. Just a few weeks ago the New York District Board (and a few Key Club Officers) returned from the gorgeous Phoenix, Arizona where the Key Club International Convention was held. We had just fewer than thirty Key Clubbers from the New York District represented at workshops, social events, and of course the house of delegates. Key Club ICON, this year was one of true amazement, an experience in which

Some of the entertainment at the convention consisted of Keynote speaker, Eric Saperston, who told us of his inspiring life changing journey, and Craig Karges the “extraordinist”, who was the award-winning entertainer wowing Key Clubbers with his mystical illusions. Meeting members from all over the United States as well as from foreign places such as Italy, Jamaica, and Aruba was a truly unique experience.

Key Club ICON, this year was one of true amazement, an experience in which I‟ll never forget. I hope next year many of you will get the chance to attend the 2012 Key Club ICON in the beautiful Orlando, Florida! (For those of you that are wondering, yes...Disney.) Hope you all enjoy your summer, but don‟t forget about Key Club. Summer provides Key Clubbers with the chance to perform some seriously successful projects, take advantage of it! Also don't forget to subscribe to the New York District website (www.nydkc.org), as well as the Official NYDKC Facebook Group (on.fb.me/meTPeC). - Governor Domenick Pesce

WORDS FROM DISTRICT SECRETARY

REMEMBER TO CHECK OUT: WWW.NYDKC.ORG

Hello New York District! My name is Daniel Ivan Lin, the District Secretary for the 2011-2012 service year. It has been fun working with some of you and I want to let you know that we are off to a good start. Please make sure however to keep up with your club's paperwork during the summer. Remember that even though it is summertime, you should still be committed to Key Club. It is important that we continue to serve our home, school, and community. Though events are limited during the summer, it is vital that you submit your club's monthly report forms (MRF), is a key device for relaying information from your club to the district. The form is due on the 7th of each month and can be submitted through the online submission (on the district website), by email (use the PDF form of the MRF), or by snail mail. Submitting these forms can ensure that your club gets credit for service they have done. Even if you do not have service projects that month, still submit your MRFs. If you ever need to submit a monthly report form late, please make sure to email me (daniellin.sec@nydkc.org). This way, not only do I know that you need more time, but I know that you will be submitting your club's monthly report form. If you ever need help, please do not be afraid to ask me. Later this month, I will be sending out Tips for Club Secretaries, a guide that will prove to be extremely useful in many areas. For the election report form, please make sure that you send it if you haven't done so already. This information is needed for the District Directory. I have started a blog / website for club secretaries, nydkcsec.wordpress.com, acting as a forum for questions and inquiries, and provide important updates. Feel free to follow it as often as you like and hopefully it will be updated every two weeks. As a reminder, please subscribe to the New York District Secretaries Google Group (http://groups.google.com/group/new-yorkdistrict-key-club-secretaries) and the official Secretaries Group on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_191839670863138& ap=1). Remember to keep up the good work. Enjoy your well-deserved summer! -District Secretary Daniel Ivan Lin

WORDS FROM DISTRICT TREASURER Hello, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! Having just returned from being trained as a District Treasurer at International Convention, I am excited to soon be putting that training to good use! Even though dues are due in November, it‟s not too late to start collecting. It can be the difference between handing them in on time and being late. Start asking members that will be in your club next year and discuss this at summer meetings. Many club treasurers mentioned the need for dues resources on the Treasurer Survey, and I am currently working on it hopefully out during September. If you have not completed this survey please click on this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5D9HX5. As the new school year approaches, club treasurers should be beginning to make the club‟s budget. It is essential for the club to make more money for the club‟s fund. Start a budget if you don‟t have one, because they do help. It‟s another reason to collect dues now; you will know how much money you will gain in your club fund (usually $1-3 per member). When making your budget, take everything into consideration, from Kiwanis visits to the end of the year party. It is better to budget an event that you may or may not plan rather than not budget it at all. Make sure to know if your club requires an approved copy from the school administration. If you had the opportunity to see the FRF spreadsheet, I am amazed with the treasurers of the mighty New York District. In three months, we beat our goal. Our new goal is 100 FRFs by LTC. As a reminder, after you fill the FRF, please send me proof of the fundraising from a copy of the check to letter from the organization. Keep them coming! Stay tuned for more resources being release. As always if you have any questions or ideas, please email me at emilygicewicz.treas@nydkc.org Don't forget to join us on Facebook and Google!! Lastly, check out my newly released Treasurer Tribune for more information. Yours in service, Emily Gicewicz District Treasurer.

WORDS FROM DISTRICT EDITOR & WEBMASTER

DISTRICT BULLETIN EDITOR AMBER LEE

I am Amber Lee, District Editor from 2011-2012. One of my main jobs as District Editor is to create the District Newsletter known as “The Empire Key”. Now, what is “The Empire Key” It‟s comparable to all newsletters from your home Key Club, but my newsletter is just a guide for the District with greetings, important District news, District Projects, Service Spotlights, and New York District‟s way of service. As one of my goals, I will be creating most likely four issues of “The Empire Key” (one per season). There will not be less. A log will be sent out each month for required articles from LTGs. It is important that you submit articles and contribute to our newsletter. There are over 5000 Key Clubs of this world. One can‟t possibly travel to every country and club to see what they are doing. This is where newsletter comes in handy. We get to view the service provided by the District during that season/month. Your own club or school can be starred on more than one page! You‟re designs, thoughts, articles, and anything you wish can be incorporated. I encourage all LTGs to convince the editors of your division to make newsletters following graphic standards and Key Club colors. Believe it or not, we can hold a whole new way of communication just by flipping our pages. We show our passion, color, and family through every word and thought we have for Key Club. The Empire Key is the District‟s way of expressing the District‟s hard work and keeping the Key Club core values of character building, inclusiveness, leadership, and caring. Stay tuned for my first issue of “The Empire Key” being released during August of 2011. Any questions, any ideas, or any suggestions, email me at amberlee.editor@nydkc.org or contact me at (347) 653 3656. Amber Lee Key Club District Editor

This is your New York District Key Club Webmaster, Oscar Tan. I‟ve recently updated the NYDKC official website. Please, take a look. If you notice on the home page of this website, there is a section labeled „Service Spotlights‟. So, what exactly are service spotlights? Each month, key clubbers submit club spotlights. Club spotlights usually show an article about a certain service event attended. Along with the article is a picture that portrays a service duty performed by Key Club members of your Home Club. This is rather simple, because even a few words can be a spotlight. Service Spotlights that stand out are often posted onto our New York District Key Club website, <nydkc.org>. How do you get your Service Spotlight onto the website? When your Service Spotlight article is finished, simply send it to Amber Lee via amberlee.editor@nydkc.org or your LTG to post on his/her newsletter. Our District Editor will then choose the spotlights and send it to me. I will post it on the official website. Service Spotlights are a great way to show off what service your club has done, and it may be featured on the front page! So, use some time and just submit those spotlights. K-FAMILY RELATIONS, FALL RALLY & DTC K-Family Relations: Why do we need to connect with our K-Family counterparts? Many of us know that we, Key Clubbers are not the only members of the K-Family; along with Kiwanis, there are also K-Kids, Builders Club, Circle-K, and Aktion Club. But, why do we need maintain contact with other members of the K-family? Maintaining relations with the younger members of the K-family is important, because it gets the younger kids interested in community service; this teaches them the Key Club core values as they move along in the K-family. One easy way to connect with the younger children is to do something they love…color! Visit a K-Kids Club during the holiday season and make holiday cards for your local nursing home. Your local Kiwanis can also be one of the most important assets to your Key Club. Whether it is a problem with your advisor or you‟re in need of financial support, Kiwanis is always there for help. To strengthen relations with your Kiwanis, invite them to come to your club meeting, this will show that you want them to be a part of your own club. Another way to strengthen relations with your local Kiwanis, Circle-K, or Aktion Clubs, is to plan an event with them; it‟s as easy as contacting the president of the club and planning a meeting. Once you have that initial meeting planned, the rest is simple: plan your event. But how do you get in contact with the other members of the K-Family? One easy way is to get contact with your Kiwanis; they are one of the most valuable resources and will always be there to help. Another way is to contact your Lieutenant Governor whom can help with any questions that you may have about the K-Family. Ellen Dooley Division 16

What is a Fall Rally and DTC? Hey, Key Clubbers! How has your summer been so far? As our summer vacation begins to slowly come to an end towards August, it means that it‟s time for Fall Rally planning! As many new members are joining our Mighty New York District, they may be wondering what exactly are Fall Rallies and DTC‟s. Fall Rallies are a great way to not only train officers, but motivate members and raise money for a charity. Some Key Clubbers aren‟t able to make it to the annual Leadership Training Conference, where large training sessions are held for the various officer positions, and this is where Fall Rallies and DTC‟s also known as Division Training Conferences, come into play. Basically, two to three divisions collaborate on a huge Rally and plan workshops with guest speakers to assist in officers training. Because three Divisions make up a lot of members, Division Training Conferences come into play. At DTC‟s we basically have a smaller Fall Rally with only one Division. Mini charity projects are also held at these two events to help raise funds for a cause that is usually voted on at the event. All officers and members are strongly recommended to come to both of these events. There will always be resources for members and officers to take back to their home clubs. If anyone has questions about either of these two events, don‟t hesitate to ask! Yours in Leadership and Service, Andrew Abbey, Division 26 Lt. Governor aabbey.ltg@nydkc.org

ICON ADVENTURE This year, Key Club International Convention was

held at Phoenix, Arizona. However, the actual convention doesn‟t begin until June 29th. The New York District Board left New York on June 27th. Now, you must be wondering where we are going on those two days before the convention. Well, we went to have some fun. On June 27th, the downstate New York District Board gathered together around 5:30 in the morning, in JFK Airport. We waited for everybody to go check-in. Our flight doesn‟t depart until 7:30 a.m. So we took a little break, and bought some breakfast (in the waiting area). We boarded on the plane, and looked for our seat number. We were ready and excited for the new adventure ahead of us. We had fun during our plane ride to Las Vegas, Nevada. We played pranks on each other, took pictures of our officers sleeping, and etc. The fun was just a short period of time; very soon, the plane landed around noon (EST). We got on the bus, and went to Chili‟s to have lunch. After dropping off our luggage‟s, we went to tour around Las Vegas (in our coach bus) – and took pictures… in the bus. Afterwards, we picked up the rest of the New York District Board (from upstate). Later on, with all the members in the New York District Board, we went to tour around Hoover Dam. The weather in Nevada is definitely not a joke. The wind is like a heat wave. However, we managed to learn about the history and the structure, of Hoover Dam. In addition, we had a good look of the Colorado River. After few hours of touring, we went back to the bus; made a short stop at the chocolate factory store, and call it for the day. On June 28th, we went to the Gold Mine tour (an hour away from Vegas). Although we didn‟t dig for gold, but we went in to a tunnel (where it‟s about half-a-century years old). The tour lasted about 1-2 hours, but we learned a lot. Afterwards, we rode 4 hours to Utah, for our White WaterRafting activity. We already changed our clothes beforehand, so we‟re good to go. When we arrived, it was around late in the afternoon. Everybody had their lifejackets on, and in to the boat. There were four boats, and an adult instructor in each boat. We paddled for an hour; everybody got wet along the way. Through this activity, we built, not only a stronger friendship, but teamwork as well. It was a truly amazing experience.

ICON ADVENTURE (cont.) On June 29th, the New York District Board got ready and head towards to one of the nation‟s natural wonders – the Grand Canyon. It took about few hours to reach to our destination. We moved in to groups, and walked on the trail. We were enjoying the view in the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The scenery was absolutely surreal. I felt as if a painting was slap in front of my face. The bright blue sky, the different shades of brown, and the magnificent horizon, had made us all “wowing” every second. This is truly the national seven wonders. It is unfortunate that we couldn‟t spend a lot of time in the Grand Canyon; since we have to hurry up and head towards Phoenix, Arizona. It was going to be a 5-6 hours. So we bought our lunch, ate on the bus, and spent the rest of our free-time… on the bus. Basically, the bus is our second home. We‟ve arrived to Phoenix, Arizona around 5 in the afternoon (PST). The hotel WAS BEAUTIFUL! The exterior was okay. But inside, I felt as if I step in to a 10 star hotel (if there‟s such thing)! We went in to our rooms, and oh my goodness; there was a balcony with a beautiful view, a HUGE bathroom, lovely beds, and a plasma TV! Now, my stay in the hotel will definitely not be a disappointment. The workshops don‟t start until July 1st and 2nd. So we don‟t have to do anything until June 30th. We explore around the hotel, and the mall across from it (15 minute walk). The caucus session began on June 30th. All the New York District Board was a delegate – representing their home club. All candidates made their speeches. The first caucus session eliminated a few candidates that are running for the International Trustee positions. The caucus continues to July 1st. The House of Delegates was the final voting on the candidates. We voted for the International president, vicepresident, and 11 other trustees. In addition, we voted on several amendments for the by-laws. It was a fierce and tough process throughout. The workshops took place later on. I attended a several workshops, to enhance my leadership and communication skills, for a better division and leader. During ICON, I also learned more about the ELIMINATE project (which is also part of the NYDKC district projects). Throughout this whole trip, I‟ve gained experiences, skills, and a stronger Key Club spirit. I‟m lucky that I am able to be part of Key Club – this amazing organization. You all should be proud of yourself that you‟re a Key Clubber ♥ DIVISION 9 FOR THE WIN!!!

CLUB SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS ♥ ABRAHAM LINCOLN H.S. KEY CLUB

“The street fair was a great way for us to interact and cooperate for the better good of our Key Club…”

It was a great day for the beach and the weather was meant for relaxing. Instead we woke up early and went straight to service for our own club. It was the first day of May and time for our annual key club street fair on Brighton 7. This event was not like other event we have had in the past; in which our key club, along with the Midwood and Dewey Key Clubs, were the beneficiaries of it. The street fair is especially important to the livelihood of the Lincoln Key Club and its funds help us financially throughout the whole year. This event is put together by a man whose dedication to Key Club is an inspiration of immense proportion, Mr. Mark Grashow. He was the reason Key Club is in our school for he wanted us to get involved, he started several years ago when he was a teacher at our school. The street fair was a great way for us to interact and cooperate for the better good of our Key Club, a way to make new friends and have fun. At this event we finally met Mr. Alan Misonznick, the president of our supporting Kiwanis club. Most Clubbers considered him M.I.A but after this meeting he has been showing a lot more interest in what we are doing and comes around much more often. The street fair raised a considerably amount of money for our club and we were very appreciative of what we achieved that day. Submitted by: Ashani Hamilton

♥ JOHN DEWEY H.S. KEY CLUB On July 16th, John Dewey Key Club gathered 8 volunteers, to help out another FEED 500 event. This event was organized to provide food for the homeless people wandering the streets. The volunteers packed two lunch bags with a sandwich, chips, napkins, juice box and wrote encouragement cards before heading out to the streets to feed the less fortunate. Our group‟s goal is not only to provide food for these people we find but to further assist them in their daily lives by directing them to The Bowery Mission. NYC Urban Project is a non-profit organization that tutor and mentor, feed the homeless and fight sex trafficking and slavery. Submitted by: Selkey Fung

CLUB SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS (cont.) ♥ EDWARD R. MURROW H.S. KEY CLUB Edward R. Murrow Key Club has done many events from April 2011 to the present. But, there was one event that we think was very memorable. This event was the Special Olympics at the United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, or UCP. The Special Olympics was on May 27, 2011 at the UCP Brooklyn School. ERMHS Key Club participated in this event, along with our LTG of course! We helped the children play in many of the activities and events, like mini golf, obstacle course, and more. It was fun to help the children play. Although, some of the events the children could not participate in, we continued to encourage and support them. We liked to think of the UCP as a place where it isn‟t about winning or what we can or cannot do. It‟s a place of growing and loving and laughing. We feel content, accomplished, and we also felt kind of awesome since we were able to help others have fun. We hope that every other Key Club can feel that way too! Submitted by: ERMHS Key Club

♥ BROOKLYN TECHNICAL H.S. KEY CLUB It was a lovely Sunday, when a bunch of Brooklyn Tech KC members got out of bed earlier to prepare for their two hour long journey to Cunningham Park in Queens! But what were they going there for? Well, none other than for the K-Family picnic! This event was hosted and planned out by the President of Circle K in Queens College, Kelly Chan! Along with members from Kiwanis, Circle K and other Key Clubs, the event was a huge success! Division 9 had the biggest turn out and made up majority of the attendees! We had 16 members show up from Brooklyn Tech, while around 5 members from John Dewey showed up. There was inter-clubbing with Division 8a Key Clubbers. Lieutenant Governors of 8a and 8, Carla and Antonio, were also there. We also meet Bronx Science KC President, Victoria. This event started out with one of the best working ice breakers in my opinion. It involved a large inflatable beach ball with questions written on it. When you catch the ball, where ever your left index finger lands on, you have to answer the question! Later on in the day, what was suppose to be a water balloon tossing activity turned into a water balloon fight. Yet all 100 of the water balloons quickly disappeared in less than five minutes! Instead, members resorted in using buckets of water! And Helen, don‟t worry, we got Jim! It was a truly memorable day for the K-Family. It was a such unforgettable bonding experience and I‟m sure everyone left feeling satisfied. Submitted by: Vivian Lu

CLUB SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS (cont.) ♥ MIDWOOD H.S. KEY CLUB On May 15, we participated in the AIDS walk in Central Park that was 6 miles long! The AIDS walk is a major event that involves thousands of people joining in to help raise money for research in providing treatment for such a prevalent disease. In the huge crowds walking for the same cause, our club had over 30 devoted members, our advisor and family members dressed knowing we had a long way ahead of us. Our club and school community raised $350 for this cause using pamphlets, boxes and posters. Many different schools were represented by the signs being held up, including our club holding our beautiful Midwood Key Club sign that our art committee created. We tried to have fun, interact with fellow walkers and just amuse ourselves along the way. We were given great encouragement by groups of people as we hit particular checkpoints that cheered us on by saying, “Go Midwood Key Club!” At the end of the day, that good feeling of hearing the cheers and helping out the millions in need was all we needed to be happy we did it.
