Promethean Particles Formulating Solutions with Nanomaterials

Promethean Particles design, develop and manufacture inorganic nanoparticle dispersions for a range of corporate clients around the world. The materials produced are used in a variety of applications by our customers; these include green energy (photovoltaics, fuel cells, hydrogen storage); chemical and polymer industries; automotive; power generation and healthcare. In each case the materials we provide enable a new product or add functionality to an exisiting product.

Our customers work with us because we offer a unique and flexible approach to nanoparticle manufacture through our patent protected continuous hydrothermal production process. This process allows highly controlled production of a broad range of materials in one step. Continuous hydrothermal synthesis offers a number of advantages over other nanomaterial manufacturing technologies including particle control, online formulation and commercial scale production. PARTICLE CONTROL Promethean Particles technology allows the manufacture of a broad range of materials from metals through to complex metal oxides, sulfides and selenides. Nanomaterial control also extends to the particle size, size distribution and morphology. For example we have manufactured particles, platelets, rods and nanotubes of a variety of materials from hydroxyapatite to tungsten oxide. ONLINE FORMULATION All nanomaterials are produced in dispersion. These are typically aqueous dispersions but 94 success through nanomaterials

we also have experience of solvothermal processing. The dispersion element is then taken one step further with online formulation during particle manufacture. Depending on the customer and application requirements this has included incorporating surfactants, phase transfer to other solvents and encapsulation in polymers. This allows one step manufacture of ready to use products allowing our customers to incoporate the nanoparticles directly into their end-use application. In addition, producing nanomaterials in dispersion avoids the health and safety concerns over the inhalation of dry powders and exposure to staff and clients is minimised. COMMERCIAL SCALE PRODUCTION Design and development work is carried out at lab scale (grams per hour) with manufacturing capacity currently at 12 tons per annum. We provide two services to our customers, firstly, design and development of the ideal material for their application and secondly, commercial scale manufacture. We recognise that every application is unique and requires a tailor-made

material to achieve optimum results; hence, Promethean works with each customer to develop the materials they need to service their market. This includes screening particle composition, doping of binary oxides with other elements or providing samples with a range of particle sizes or shapes depending on the application. Once the nanomaterial with the target functionality for the application has been identified, large scale manufacture using the Promethean technology is possible. Material synthesis transfers directly to the manufacturing plant, with a current capacity of 12 tons per annum (dry weight equivalent). For customers who require larger quantities there are a range of options including licensing the technology for production on site for direct incorporation into their production line.
