Sustainability Commission launched

®

Green Award winners join new working group AIMS Headquarters OACA Olympic Complex Av Spyros Louis, Athens, Greece www.aims-worldrunning.org

On 23 May AIMS announced the launch of its Sustainability Commission to promote best environmental practice amongst its member races.

aimshq@aims-worldrunning.org Tel: +30 21 0683 2550

The Sustainability Commission is the next step in AIMS’ promotion of good environmental practice among its member races. In 2013 AIMS created a detailed guide on ‘how to run an environment-friendly marathon’ which complemented the first edition of the ‘Green Award’, presented as part of the AIMS ‘Best Marathon Runner’ Awards Gala in Athens, to acknowledge environmental excellence and best environmental practices of its member races. Since then the Green Award has attracted the interest of more than 100 AIMS member races all around the world. To date six AIMS Members have received the AIMS Green Award and the submissions are always increasing. The new Sustainability Commission will: – review and update environmental guidelines in a systematic way

EXECUTIVES Paco Borao

– assist in a knowledge transfer scheme to all AIMS members in order to endorse and improve their sustainability agenda – organise seminars and training on environmental sustainability in the frame of race organisation – assist the AIMS board in decision making related to sustainability and race organisation – contribute to the international dialogue about bridging sport and sustainability

George Kazantzopoulos

The Commission will be led by George Kazantzopoulos, founder of the NGO ‘Institute Team for the World’, a scientific partner of AIMS on sustainability and member for more than 15 years of the International Olympic Committee, Sport and Environment Commission. The founding members of the Commission were announced on 5 June, to coincide with World Environment Day and Global Running Day. All six recipients of the AIMS Green Award have a representative on the Commission.

Mangyongdae experiences record foreign participation after joining AIMS After the Mangyongdae Prize International Marathon was held on 7 April in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, the organisers revealed that international participation had more than doubled to 950 foreign runners from the 450 who ran in 2018. This followed the race first being opened to non-elite foreign runners in 2014 and becoming a member of AIMS late in 2017. A US travel ban remains in force following the death of a US student in North Korea in 2017 so no Americans were among the field. Even so recent diplomatic détente will have helped to increase foreign participation. Koryo Tours are the exclusive international travel partners of the Marathon. “We work with the organising committee in Pyongyang to put on the race, including managing promotions for the event,” says Marathon Tours Manager Marcus McFarland. “We have been arranging tours to North Korea for over 25 years, including for the Pyongyang Marathon since it opened for foreign amateur runners in 2014.

“We do believe that AIMS membership and the exposure in Distance Running magazine has contributed to our event and look forward to continuing this relationship into the future. The organising committee is very pleased with the additional prestige it has brought to the event.” The BBC website reported that the British Ambassador to North Korea, Colin Crooks, took part and tweeted that the huge crowd ensured that the “atmosphere in the stadium was great” (See Opinion article on p35).

Women’s Commission members named The founding members of the AIMS Women’s Commission have been named: • Martha Morales, Chair (AIMS Vice President, Mexico) • Paco Borao (AIMS President, Spain) • Dagmawit Amare (Great Ethiopian Run) • Inna Chernoblavskaya (Moscow Marathon) • Stacey Conley, President, Conley Sports Productions & Austin Marathon & Half Marathon (USA) • Renna Nelis (Tallinn Marathon) • Tetsuya ‘Teddy’ Okamura – AIMS Board Member (Nagoya Women’s Marathon) • Alessandra Ramella Pairin – AIMS Continental PR Manager for Europe • Maria Polyzou – Greek marathon record holder, author and speaker

• Václav Skrivánek – AIMS Board Member (Prague Marathon). • Shirley Yang – AIMS PR Manager for China (Beijing Marathon) The AIMS Women’s Commission has been created in support of goal 5 in the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development: “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”

Medaltime – new AIMS partner Medaltime becomes a new supporting partner of AIMS from 1 July. Based in the Netherlands, the parent company Prom’es has specialised in the printing and supply of race bibs for more than 20 years. Supplying medals was added to their repertoire a few years later and by 2018 sales were approaching 2 million/year. The new brand “Medaltime” was created this year in partnership with Paul Selby who has a long-standing relationship with the AIMS family. The ambition is to expand the market and reach new horizons. More and more race organisers recognise the need for advanced technology and have come to expect passionate commitment, new ideas and keener prices from their suppliers.

News in brief Russian Federation suspension 9 June 2019: At a Council meeting held in Monaco IAAF reaffirmed the ban on Russian athletes competing under their own flag – a ban which will now cover the IAAF World Championships in Doha to be held from 28 September–6 October. The ban has stood since November 2015, this being the eleventh time IAAF has voted to maintain it. AIMS members should not negotiate the entry or participation of any Russian athletes or support personnel (agents, coaches, etc.) in their races but: “In principle, ordinary fun runners with absolutely no ties to the Russian Federation are eligible to participate.” It is best to explicitly identify the participation of any ‘eligible’ Russian runners in advance of the race being held to avoid any misunderstanding with media outlets. Those Russian athletes suspended under the IAAF ban are listed on www.dopingsanctions.com

AIMS BMR Gala and AIMS Symposium The 7th AIMS ‘Best Marathon Runner’ Awards Gala will take place in Athens on the evening of Friday 8th November. Awards will be made to the best male and female marathon runners of 2019 along with other awards to race directors to recognise their efforts in the fields of sustainability (Green Award) and social engagement (Social Award). The AIMS Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual who has made a sustained contribution to the benefit of distance running over several decades. The 13th AIMS Marathon Symposium will be held in Athens on the morning of Saturday 9th November.

The next edition of Distance Running will be published in October 2019. The advertising and editorial deadlines will be on 2 September.

Looking ahead | 13 October 2019 Zagreb Marathon & Half, Croatia

Positive energy on a beautiful course Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has a population of 800,000 and lies in the Sava River valley. The marathon route is totally flat and stretches from the city centre, with the start and finish on Zagreb’s main square, to the east of Zagreb before returning on the same route back to the west. The half marathon route is one lap and full marathon two. Both races start at 10.00. New this year is the introduction of the Garmin 10km run for beginners and runners that are not quite ready for longer distances. It starts at 09.00. If you are a lunatic you can manage both races, first the 10km and then the marathon. If you want to do this then please contact us and we’ll give you an entry to the first race free of charge. There are a few things runners need to know about the Zagreb marathon. First, there are plenty of refreshment stations with drinks and fruit, six of them on each lap. There are DJs and rock bands on the course and “well mannered” Balkan cheering in the eastern

sleeved running shirt, rich sponsor goodies and the uniquely-designed finishers’ medal bearing the famous symbol of the Zagreb marathon. But most of all you’ll enjoy running the beautiful course with lots of positive energy around you – and since it’s so flat maybe a personal best time is waiting for you here.

Picture: Krume Ivanovski

Zagreb has plenty to offer the runner parts of Zagreb. Beware of overly perky people with reddish faces in Dubrava (the East side) who offer you drinks. It’s probably not water but schnapps. It’s excellent by the way, and you should definitely try it after the race. Despite the modest entry fee Zagreb Marathon provides a great start package with a longPicture: Krume Ivanovski

If you are travelling from other countries for the whole weekend there is the marathon party with DJs and concerts on the main square with traditional Croatian pasta cuisine (strukla) the evening before the race. There is also our famous Croatian beer, but be moderate – the race is next morning. On race morning you’ll find the bag drop and changing rooms conveniently located nearby on the main square (about 100m away) and afterwards we offer you lunch and drinks to speed your recovery. We would point out that the main reason to visit the Zagreb Marathon is to see our handsome people (oh yes – and the country). Croatians are so good-looking that you won’t believe it. Please, come and enjoy with us. n www.zagreb-marathon.com

Looking ahead | 13 October 2019 SSQ Quebec City Marathon, Canada

Quebec offers an exciting new course that shows off the old city

Steeped in history Now more than 20 years in the running, the Quebec City Marathon attracts in excess of 8000 runners and walkers from more than 20 countries. For 2019 organisers are expecting entries to top 8500 over the weekend of 12–13 October.

The exciting new course unveiled last year starts in Old Quebec, taking runners inside the city’s 400-year old fortified stone walls. One of Quebec City’s historic neighbourhoods was the first urban area in North America to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The SSQ Insurance Quebec City Marathon a healthy invitation from Brunet is one of the most popular local running events and takes in eight of the historic city’s picture-postcard neighbourhoods.

If you’ve never been to Quebec City before the Marathon weekend is the perfect opportunity to feast your eyes on some of the finest jewels in its crown. There is the iconic Château Frontenac inside the old city walls, Parliament Hill and the grand historic Plains of Abraham – not to mention the Notre-Dame de Québec Cathedral-Basilica and the Old Port district. The marathon course also runs through the city’s vibrant Saint-Roch and Saint-Sauveur shopping and entertainment districts, as well as alongside parts of the Saint-Charles River. Participants and spectators get a good taste of both the upper and lower towns. Early October in Quebec is the prime time to see the natural landscape transformed into a sea of vivid autumn colours, with comfortable temperatures that are ideal for long-distance running. There is plenty for the whole family to do on the weekend of the Quebec City Marathon. The free Je Cours Qc Expo on 11–12 October is open to all, and the 2km Kids’ Race is perfect for ages 5–12. There’s also the SSQ Health 5km for runners age 10 and over. These are just some of the reasons that make Quebec City a great family destination for all.

To warm up for the big day participants are invited to the SSQ Grand Fit+Yoga happening on the Friday night. This 30-minute cardio muscle workout, followed by a 30-minute yoga session, is the perfect way to de-stress and relax – complete with music by a live DJ, free drinks and lots more great surprises. Times recorded in the marathon are accepted as qualifying times for the 2020 Boston Marathon. n www.jecoursqc.com/en Distance Running | 2019 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 27 October 2019 Chuncheon International Marathon, Korea See why Korea’s pioneering race is called the “legend of autumn”

Runners are happier in Chuncheon Have you ever imagined running alongside a lake looking at a mountain covered with trees bearing infinitely variegated autumn leaves? Koreans know the Chosunilbo Chuncheon International Marathon as “The Legend of Autumn”. If you run this race, you will be inspired by the beautiful autumnal scenery as you challenge your physical limitations. For this reason Korean runners rate the Chosunilbo Chuncheon International Marathon as the country’s top autumn race. Every year more than 25,000 runners participate in the Marathon and an associated 10km. The course is around Ui-am Lake, located in the middle of Chuncheon. Runners can enjoy the colourful autumn sights as they run along Hoban Street near Gongjicheon Park. The race was launched in 1946 as ‘The Chosunilbo Shortened Marathon’ to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Ki-Jung Son’s victory in the Marathon at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. He won in an Olympic record time of 2:29:19, while his compatriot Seung-Ryoung Nam came in third. These were great feats that elevated spirits for all Koreans. ‘The Chosunilbo Shortened Marathon’ was upgraded to a full-length marathon in 1970. The venue was changed from Seoul to Chuncheon in 1991. The race is held every October and has led the popularisation of the marathon by being the first to introduce electronic timing and pacemakers for amateur runners.

Participants who complete the full course ten times or more are inducted into the “Hall of Fame” each year – so far 3448 people have been so honoured for their steadfast interest and love for the race and its participants. The organisers have made strenuous efforts to increase runners’ satisfaction. They have renewed the souvenir T-shirt annually and it has been praised for practicality and design. Moreover, they have upgraded commemorative medals since 2018. Another pride of the race is its safety. Ambulances are on standby every 5km. AEDs and emergency services are also assigned every kilometre to ensure the safety of the participants. Nearly 2000 volunteers are stationed throughout the course to help runners complete the race. The volunteers comprise middle- and high-school students and come from local civic groups in Chuncheon. Organisers have developed the race into a regional festival in which local residents voluntarily stage and participate in cheering shows throughout the route. Chuncheon, just 62km northeast of Seoul, is easily accessible and can be reached on race day by express buses, trains, and subway trains in less than an hour. Foreign runners can stay in Seoul and come directly to the race. But there are so many things to enjoy and eat here – foods such as spicy stir-fried chicken and makguksu (a buckwheat noodle salad) – that runners are happier in Chuncheon.. Chuncheon, Gangwon-do is famous as the “city of lakes” because it has so many of them – including Ui-am Lake and So-yang Lake. Nami Island is a famous tourist spot in Chuncheon which receives more than three million visitors annually. There is plenty to see and do here. n marathon.chosun.com

Looking ahead | 27 October 2019 Toyama Marathon, Japan

Toyama Marathon offers runners a range of sights along the route – and snacks of local sushi

The Toyama Marathon offers a beautiful route along the Toyama Bay shoreline featuring the city, the surrounding mountains and the sea. The race starts near Takaoka Kojo Park, which consists of the remains of Takaoka Castle, built by Lord Maeda Toshinaga. Runners then pass in front of the Great Buddha of Takaoka, one of Japan’s three Great Buddhas, before going through Yamachosuji which has been designated as a preservation area for its clusters of traditional buildings. The next landmark is the Takaoka Sekino Shrine, made famous by the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival.

Vibrant atmosphere from rice paddies to ‘future city’

Runners then turn around in front of Hokuriku Shinkansen’s Shin-Takaoka Station, designed with vertical lattices reminiscent of neighbouring historical buildings. Arriving in the Imizu area gives race participants a view where the world-renowned beauty of Toyama Bay and the Tateyama mountain range can be best appreciated.

taken from Toyama Bay. Runners then come to the Shinminato Bridge, a panorama spot which is only accessible on foot during this race. The Kaiwomaru sailing ship, affectionately known as the ‘Lady of the Seas’, lies alongside.

The marathon takes you through a fishing port where you can feel the vibrant atmosphere as fishermen sell the delicious bounty they have

Crossing the Jinzu River on the Toyama Kita Bridge you can appreciate the great view of the Tateyama Mountains looming above the city buildings. After passing in front of the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design the finish line is just past the urban oasis that is the Toyama Prefecture’s Fugan Canal Kansui Park.

As you leave the view of the rice paddies you finally arrive in FutureCity Toyama.

One of Toyama’s greatest attractions is its food. A local speciality is Masuzushi, a variety of sushi which is the most popular food in the Toyama Marathon. n www.toyamamarathon. com/entry/oversea.html

Looking ahead | 3 November 2019 Hangzhou Marathon, China

Keep going and never stop The Hangzhou Marathon’s scenic route showcases both history and modernisation

In addition to the marathon a half marathon, a mini marathon, a “couples’ run” and a family run are part of the programme. There are 35,000 participants in total. In 2019 Hangzhou Marathon will continue to seek new breakthroughs in technology, wisdom, environmental protection and public welfare, build the top Internet and marathon event in China, constantly improve the standards of the event and create a race with runners at the core. The catchphrase of the event is “Run Through Beautiful Scenery”. Featuring the concepts of “Recreation, Environment, Entertainment, Fashion and Health”, the Marathon demonstrates the natural and humanistic landscape of Hangzhou. We hope that the annual marathon tour brings you a joyful experience. Hangzhou Marathon has been held annually since 1987 – a history of 32 years. It was originally known as the West Lake Osmanthus International Marathon and then as the Hangzhou International Friendship Marathon. In 1999 the provincial and municipal governments jointly held the event and changed its name to “Zhejiang and Hangzhou International Marathon”. In 2006 it was renamed as “Hangzhou International Marathon” and in 2015 it officially became “Hangzhou Marathon”. After years of dedicated efforts Hangzhou Marathon has been a full member of AIMS since 2007 and is an IAAF Silver Label Road Race and CAA Gold Medal Race. This makes the event one of the most important marathons in China. In 2018 Hangzhou Marathon established friendly and cooperative relations with Paris Marathon, Los Angeles Marathon, Hague Marathon and other internationally renowned marathons.

Hangzhou Marathon offers people the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery and tasty food of Hangzhou. The course is built around the world cultural heritage site of West Lake, which affords a most beautiful route. Recent urban transformation in Hangzhou has brought other facets to the race. The first section, with the West Lake scenic area as the core, passes through Hubin Road and Zhongshan Road and represents the history and culture of Hangzhou. The next part focuses on Qianjiang New City and exemplifies the modernisation of Hangzhou.

The third phase offers the most beautiful running conditions along Wentao Road as far as the G20 main venue and represents the future development of Hangzhou. Returning to the West Lake scenic area signals the marathon’s spirit of keeping going and never stopping. The course integrates the West Lake scenery, history and culture with the business district and modernisation, Qiantang River scenery and the marathon spirit to form the “world’s most beautiful course”. Looking ahead | 3 November 2019 Maratón Guadalajara Megacable hidratado por Electrolit, Mexico Route passing Guadalajara’s traditional and modern architectural delights

Spectacular stage with the joy of music Some races have great prestige; others have great colour and cultural appeal... but the Guadalajara Marathon has it all.

four runners compete among categories of sports clubs, municipalities, states or countries for podium honours.

With great care for the runners, a highly competitive field and smooth organisation the Guadalajara Megacable Marathon hydrated by Electrolit gained an IAAF bronze label for the last edition; in November the goal is silver.

More than 10,000 runners will experience the intensity and enjoy every kilometre of the Marathon, encouraged by supporters in more than 60 ‘Animation Islands’ garbed in multi-coloured traditional wrestling masks, hats and costumes.

The first half of the marathon route is almost the same as that of 21K Guadalajara, which in February made history by being the first Gold Label event in Mexico.

The Municipal Sports Council organises both the Guadalajara Marathon and the 21K Guadalajara Electrolit, two of the continent’s most outstanding races. Each event involves government institutions, universities, neighbourhood groups and volunteers, so that the entire city embraces the race.

The spectacular stage of the start and finish is framed by the Glorieta Minerva and the Arcos de Guadalajara, traditional sites that originally welcomed visitors to the city. From the starting gun, the race gets underway amongst examples of the most emblematic modern architecture, such as the Matute Remus Bridge and the Arcos del Milenio – fantastic images that make the Tapatíos proud. As an added attraction to the competition, which will be the second edition of a series of six races between marathons and half marathons, runners will be able to collect shirts with stamped letters that will eventually form the word ‘Guadalajara’. The medals are also collectable and symbolise a petal so that when three are joined together they form a representative flower of the traditional Huichol art in this region of the country. If you’re not ready for a marathon, there is also a relay category in which teams of

The region’s gastronomy, culture and places of entertainment allow visitors to have a pleasant stay, including visits to Tequila (the city of the famous drink, just 50 minutes from Guadalajara), as well as paradisiacal beaches just three hours’ drive away. The culture of sport in the State of Jalisco is such that its athletes lead the country, and have performed with credit worldwide. Ambassadors such as the golfer Lorena Ochoa, the F1 driver Sergio Pérez and the boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez are shining examples. To live Guadalajara is to feel at all times the joy of music; the mariachi, the charrería and the tequila that are Mexico’s most representative icons. Now the marathon belongs to that list. n www.maratonguadalajara.org

Looking ahead | 4 January 2020 PolarNight Halfmarathon, Norway

Arctic, but accessible

It’s easy to get to Tromsø – running the half marathon there might be a bit trickier

You might think that you know what it takes to run a half marathon – but perhaps not the Polar Night Half Marathon in Tromsø at 70 degrees North. Sub-zero temperatures, continual darkness and ice and snow underfoot makes it an entirely different prospect. Why expend your energy in such difficult conditions when there are so many great events, with flat courses and perfect temperatures, for chasing a personal best? Maybe because it offers the chance of running under the Northern Lights, in the crisp, clean Arctic air and amid the snow with hundreds of burning torches lighting the course ahead. It’s actually pretty amazing. The Polar Night Half Marathon was first held in 2004 with 136 adventurous runners starting in the half marathon and 10km run. Six years later the race was attracting three times as many polar runners. In January 2019, with a 5km race added to the programme in 2012, there were a record-breaking 2177 participants, with more than 1100 in the Half Marathon alone. Runners from more than 60 countries were represented. Participants travel here for more than the race alone. Tromsø is a well-known tourist attraction and has become especially popular in recent years as a Northern Lights destination. A well-established tourism industry caters for all adventurous travellers keen to experience the Arctic, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and winter activities such as dog and reindeer sledding, skiing and snowshoeing. Situated between the mountains and the fjords, the old fishing village of Tromsø has for centuries been the main port for expeditions setting out to explore the Arctic polar regions. The first known ski race in the world was held in Tromsø

city centre in 1843. Tromsø is well known for its cuisine based on local seafood and other high-quality Arctic specialties. Any runner who stays on for a few days after the race leaves with their mind and body full of impressions. The Polar Night Half Marathon race course is fairly flat and follows the contours of Tromsø Island from the city centre around the southern point towards the northern tip and back again. Preparing for the race is a challenge in itself as the running surface could be wet or dry tarmac, crispy cold snow or a sheet of slippery ice. Or all of these. As race organisers we’ve seen all kinds of ways people prepare: some think snowshoes will be the best way to navigate the streets of Tromsø; some suppose a t-shirt is enough to combat the Arctic chill; and others dress like they’re heading for the North Pole itself.

The race website has good advice for how to dress. Don a windproof jacket and pants (or winter tights), thin woollen base-layer underwear, gloves and a hat and you are ready to battle the elements. Ordinary running shoes are usually sufficient but when conditions get really tough spiked shoes offer welcome security. Travelling to Arctic Norway is not as arduous as you might imagine. Although 400km north of the Arctic Circle there are frequent flights direct to Tromsø from several Norwegian and European cities. It is probably the most accessible of the world’s northernmost cities. Less than two hours from Oslo and about five hours from London is all it takes to get to the starting line of one of the world’s most unique races. n www.msm.no Distance Running | 2019 Edition 3

OCTOBER 27th 2019

Partner highlight Fundación Trinidad Alfonso

Community of sport

The AIMS partner and charitable initiative transforming its region through sport Valencia Marathon race director Paco Borao recalls: “A decade ago the Valencia Marathon was known as a nice, friendly organisation. We were dreaming of getting the course record below 2:10 and pushing our entries up to above 4000. We still looked enviously upon the more important Spanish marathons in Madrid and Barcelona.” Since then the Valencia Half Marathon has become a world record course in the same way that Berlin is seen as such for the Marathon. The Marathon has also advanced in leaps and bounds so that last December the course record was set at 2:04:31, there were five men under 2:05:30 and there was a total of 22,000 runners in the field. Juan Roig

What brought on this transformation in the significance of both these formerly middleranking races? It started in 2011 when the Valencia Marathon reached agreement with its municipality to run the marathon through the most beautiful areas of the city. Immediately afterwards, in 2012, it became linked with the Fundación Trinidad Alfonso and the association has remained strong for the last seven years. The Foundation plays a key role in fostering sport in the Valencian Autonomous Community (Spain) in general, and in distance running in particular. The Foundation was set up to support the Valencia Half Marathon and from then on became the event’s main collaborator. Two years later, it also began to support the Valencia Marathon to which the Foundation lends its name. These were just the first steps taken by the charitable foundation, which is presided over by the Valencian businessman Juan Roig. As well as supporting these two great races, Fundación Trinidad Alfonso set up Valencia Ciudad del Running, a movement that brings together and organises the sport within the Valencia Region. Among the Foundation’s many initiatives in this field perhaps the most notable was the building of a purpose-made running circuit in the Jardín del Turia (a linear park and gardens laid out along the former course of the Turia River). The Foundation spent two million euro on the project and undertook to pay for its upkeep for ten years. Through running, Fundación Trinidad Alfonso’s aim is to foster an effort-based culture and its values throughout the Valencian Autonomous Community, using sport as a vehicle.

With these goals in mind the Foundation seeks to make the Valencian region an international reference point in this field and to turn it into a true ‘Community of Sport’. The brand brings together, organises, and fosters sports events and initiatives in the region. This effort spans everything from big events to supporting individual athletes planning to compete in the forthcoming Olympic Games and Para-Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Foundation is just one of the vehicles through which Juan Roig has sponsored sport. For the last 30 years, Roig has also sponsored Valencia Basket, the city’s basketball team. In addition to underpinning the first team he has also done a great deal to support female players and rising stars. Two years ago he built a superbly-equipped basketball complex – L’Alqueria del Basket – as a home for the sport for generations to come. Distance Running | 2019 Edition 3

Marathon movers

Although accurate measurement of road distances had been practised for cycling time trials as early as the 1930s it involved the cumbersome process of counting spokes every time a reading was recorded. Calculations could be fiendishly complicated.

n

e y e

When you think you’ve run a short course you don’t usually go to the lengths that Alan Jones did to find out. He devised the key tool – the Jones Counter – by which races could be measured to a high degree of accuracy. Today the counter is universally used by measurers all over the world.

for detail

In 1971 Alan Jones made a groundbreaking improvement by designing a counter which, once used to calibrate the bicycle wheel (by riding over a base line of known length), recorded numbers that could be directly converted into distance.

But Ted replied: “If you are interested in putting together about 30 counter assemblies with all work done and ready to install, then proceed and let me know when you need money. The counter should have at least five figures, more if possible.”

Alan Jones recalls: “In 1970 I ran in my first road race – advertised as ‘20 kilometres’. While I didn’t run a fantastic time I knew it was faster than seemed possible. I did a rough calibration of my car’s odometer and then drove over the course. I found it to be about 11.4 miles instead of the 12.4 it should have been. About this time an article appeared in Runner’s World explaining how to measure a course. Up until this time I had never heard of Ted Corbitt (the pioneer of road race certification in the US). A friend, Tom Young, gave me a revolution counter used in an IBM machine to record the number of hours of use. I figured I might be able to use this somehow but needed a way to revolve it as the wheel turned. I went to a bike shop and looked through a box of old odometer gears. Odometers wear out faster than the gears so the proprietor was developing a collection of them. I found one that I thought I could hook to my counter. By filing the circular shaft on the counter into a square cross-section, I was able to attach it to the gear which was then slipped over the front axle of my bicycle. Tom and I measured off a half-mile calibration course. I rode the bike over it a few times to get a calibration factor and then measured the course we had laid out (which was 12 miles long). I sent Ted Corbitt my data [but] he wrote back asking if I had stretched the tape to a tension of 10 pounds (5kgf). I hadn’t; I was really discouraged. Next spring we modified the course to 20km, This time we stretched the tape and did everything right. At that time

like it would do the job. I now filed the shaft of the counter square, cut some of the thread off of the gear where the flexible shaft is attached, and lashed it all together with soft steel wire. Now anyone could make a counter like ours.

Clain and Alan Jones in 1976

Ted did not require a re-calibration after the measurement but I did one anyway since it seemed like a good thing to do. The “before” and “after” runs were not in good agreement. The difference resulted in a discrepancy of 30 yards (27.4m) over the entire 20km. Ted again turned me down. I did it once more and this time got good agreement between the two calibrations: Ted finally certified the course. Five months later, in October 1972, Ted wrote to me for a “description of the mechanism” I used to measure the course. He said that Veeder-Root was no longer making the counter he was providing [which gave one count per wheel revolution]. One had to count the number of spokes beyond the last strike to get an accurate measure. What Ted wanted was a complete description so that someone else could duplicate what I had done. I got the Veeder-Root company’s catalog and found a counter similar to the one I had used. It cost $6.50 but required a minimum order of $50.00. The dealer said he would combine orders. After three months my counter was in. Meanwhile I was looking for a gear that I could mate to the counter. I finally found a StewartWarner bicycle odometer in a store. It looked

I really didn’t want to get involved with this so I asked my son Clain – who was nine years old – to help. The assembly was really too much for him but he was able to do a bit of the work and I paid him $1.00 for each one. As time went on Clain took over more and more of the business. I mailed the first counter to Ted on 29 September 1973. By the end of the year all 30 counters were gone (for $8.25 each). But even before then Ted wrote to ask me to put together another 30 counters. On 5 January 1974 Ted sent me the first certification application done with a Jones counter (other than my own). [Gradually] business picked up. Clain got a telegram in the spring of 1976 from the Montreal Olympics asking for four counters. He sent them but got no reply or payment. It took two more letters before he finally got a telegram reply, an apology, and a check. We went to the Olympics and watched the marathon from the street. In 1983 Pete Riegel, in Measurement News, reprinted an article that gave details of the [Montreal Olympic Marathon] measurement which confirmed that one of Clain’s counters had been used. The business took off in 1978 because Jim Fixx, in “The Complete Book of Running”, mentioned the counter. As Clain approached college age I told Ted Corbitt that we should look for a person to take over the business. Finally Allan Steinfeld bought us out on behalf of the New York Road Runners Club. In 1984 the Los Angeles Olympic Marathon was measured by 13 volunteers and all of them used the Clain Jones counter. Distance Running | 2019 Edition 3

Opinion

Beyond extraordinary DPR Korea

Judy Scrine can’t resist the lure of the unknown – or little-known. So she booked herself on a trip to the Pyongyang Marathon in North Korea in April this year Signing up was easy: I just googled Pyongyang Marathon which took me straight into the site with various marathon packages offered. I run as part of my effort to raise as much money as possible for the charity Breast Cancer Now and am always looking for new races.

some pretty fast talking at the airport. We had to be very careful what we photographed and there was every risk that cameras could be confiscated and photos deleted.

I’d known about the race for nearly three years. I entered it because I am a travel nut: the more unusual the better – and North Korea ticked a lot of boxes. It was a chance to get a glimpse of this mysterious country from the inside, if only a very controlled glimpse. Communications were a bit difficult as the team don’t have much internet or email access when they are in North Korea. Things were made more difficult because one client went against their careful instructions on how to pay so that the bank accounts were frozen and I couldn’t pay by bank transfer. There was a worrying time when I wasn’t sure if my place was safe or not. I also had to pay a credit card surcharge as the bank accounts remained frozen – somewhat frustrating but absolutely not the tour company’s fault. Everything was provided from Beijing in one package including visa, airport transfers and all travel in North Korea, all accommodation (full board), a full itinerary, the race entry etc. The instructions they circulated were very comprehensive. The most difficult part was arranging my own double-entry visa for China, securing accommodation in Beijing, getting to the tours office for the briefing etc. But in the end it added to the adventure.

The field of runners was varied. Full-distance marathoners had to be able to guarantee a sub four-hour time. The locals were tiny, fast and very well disciplined. Spectators were extraordinarily enthusiastic both in the stadium and along the route. The general atmosphere was great. I felt safe at all times. We were always accompanied: I think if we had strayed even a few inches from the route during the race we would have been politely shepherded back on track. I deliberately went without too many expectations… but it was fantastic. There was a bit of hanging around beforehand but far less than in Boston or New York. The stadium experience was beyond extraordinary. I will never forget it nor know the like again. Most people did the half rather than the full marathon because of the draconian and strictly enforced cut-off time. This was frustrating. I would have preferred to run the full Marathon but I didn’t want to risk not finishing in the stadium or, far worse, not being allowed to finish at all.

It was slightly chaotic at the end of the race: knowing how to get to the spectator area in the stands and how to access loos was difficult, but no more so than in the Abbott Majors.

Running through the streets of Pyongyang was ‘other-worldly’ with its extraordinary buildings and pastel colours. The race did impose some strange requirements: we couldn’t wear tops with lettering above a certain size, flags, or images that might cause local offence (hard to predict what those might be). Although we couldn’t take GPS devices into the country everyone did. This required

I would absolutely recommend this race. North Korea is a fascinating destination in its own right. I tend not to repeat the same event so it is a reflection on me rather than the race that I will instead travel with the same tour company to Mongolia, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan for the marathons there.

The tour was fantastic. Our guide was excellent and so enthusiastic that we were rushed around from the crack of dawn until evening the entire time we were there. She wanted to show us as much as possible. No one would go to North Korea for the food, but it was all part of the experience.

Marathon greats Olympic marathon champion in 1956, Alain Mimoun remains the most bemedalled French athlete in history. On the track Mimoun won three Olympic silver medals, finishing second behind Emil Zátopek in the 10000m in 1948 and in both the 5000m and 10000m in 1952. He was also the silver medallist in both events behind Zátopek at the 1950 European Athletics Championships.

Algerian-born war veteran’s string of successes

Born Ali Mimoun Ould Kacha in French Algeria he was the first of seven children in a poor Arab-Berber family. He settled in metropolitan France and became Alain Mimoun. He was eager to integrate but found it no easy task and ended up joining the Foreign Legion. He served on the Belgian front when the Second World War started and after the fall of France in June 1940 Mimoun was posted to Bourgen-Bresse in the Free Zone of Vichy France. He discovered his talent for running quite fortuitously. In Bourg-en-Bresse there was a stadium next to the barracks and he trained there frequently. On impulse he competed in some local races without any serious preparation. He won his first running event, the 1500m departmental championship, by beating the six-time defending champion in front of 4000 spectators. He then ran a 5000m race in less than 16 minutes, drawing the comment from a local paper that: “A marathoner is born. [Mimoun] could become an Olympic champion.” But not soon: the next Olympics were still six years away and meanwhile there was a war to fight. In 1942 Mimoun was posted to Algeria where he won both track and cross-country races and became the North African crosscountry champion that year. He was called up for the Tunisian Campaign and in 1943, as the Allies gradually pushed the Afrika Corps out of Tunisia, Mimoun continued the fight in the Italian Campaign. He suffered a bad shrapnel wound in his left leg at the Battle of Monte Cassino in January 1944 but refused amputation and underwent surgery that proved successful. Returning to combat that summer he spent the last year of the war fighting his way through France and Germany. He returned to Algeria after the war but soon went back to Paris and joined the Racing Club de France. He also worked as a waiter in the Club under penurious conditions but thrived

Alain Mimoun as a runner, finishing second in the French 10000m championships in 1946 and taking the titles at both 5000m and 10000m. He won his first International Cross-Country title in 1947, establishing his prospects for the first post-war Olympics to be held in London in 1948. But Mimoun was up against an ascendant Emil Zátopek in the 10000m and finished a distant second, 300m behind him.

It was the start of a firm friendship but a frustrating one for Mimoun. In 1949 he won the International Cross-Country title again but the following year lost out to Zátopek in both the 5000m and 10000m at the European Championships. At the 1952 Olympics it was the same story although Mimoun dramatically narrowed Zátopek’s margins of victory. He finished an isolated second in the 10000m, 90m behind, but in the 5000m he led into the final bend and was only a second adrift at the finish line, improving his personal best by 14 seconds. Mimoun took his third International CrossCountry title in 1954 but sustained an injury which kept him out of the European Championships that year. He began 1956 with his final International Cross-Country title but at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he started inauspiciously, placing only twelfth in the 10000m. He lined up at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to run his first marathon alongside his friend,

defending champion Emil Zátopek, and 44 other runners. It was mid-afternoon and the temperature was 39ºC. Mimoun wore a white bandana to protect his head from the sun as he ran among a lead group of 13 runners which dwindled to five at 20km. The American John Kelly then upped the pace and Mimoun followed, surging past him on the uphill, and by 25km had built a lead of 50 seconds. He steadily increased his advantage end entered the stadium 90 seconds ahead to finish in a time of 2:25:00.

Mimoun had defeated Zátopek for the very first time in his career but was surprised not to see him coming into the stadium as he waited at the finish line. Zátopek arrived four and a half minutes after him, in sixth place. Zátopek, who had been in the Czechoslovak armed forces for a decade, formally saluted his friend before falling into an embrace. Returning to Paris he was met by a hero’s reception at the airport but returned to work at the Racing Club de France café the very next day. From 1948 to 1960 Mimoun represented France four times in the Olympic Games. He competed for France 86 times and won 29 senior national titles in the 5000m, 10000m, cross-country and marathon. Mimoun continued to run in his later life and set several age-category records. Distance Running | 2019 Edition 3

14 Sep Drei-Zinnenlauf / World Cup 6 Scotland’s Andrew Douglas and Kenya’s Lucy Murigi scored emphatic victories in the opening round of the WMRA World Cup writes Alberto Stretti. Douglas made an impressive push on the main uphill of the course. Five men had quickly got away at the start of the climb but but at the top Douglas was alone. Filimon Abraham (Eritrea) summited the hill 26 seconds back while Andy Wacker (United States), after going out hard, was the third to the top and 71 seconds in arrears. Douglas increased his lead on the downhill but Wacker descended fastest to overtake Abraham and finish 50 seconds behind Douglas. Reigning World Mountain Running Champion Lucy Murigi (Kenya) led the women's race from beginning to end. She crossed the finish line two minutes clear to take the early lead in the World Cup standings in which she will be hard to beat, even for Andrea Mayr (Austria) who has traditionally dominated the mountain races until last season. Murigi pushed hard on the uphill to establish a two-minute lead and then coasted all the way to the finish. Behind her Ireland’s Sarah McCormack took an isolated second. Crosscountry skier Iris Pessey had summitted four minutes down in third and continued to run a surprisingly strong race, chased hard by English talent Emma Clayton who was returning from an injury-riddled 2018.
