EDITORIAL In this edition we are presenting the work of Ricardo Rendón, a Mexican artist with an extensive trajectory. Exhibited in institutions such as Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía, his production might be conceived as a recording and an accumulation of actions through the transformation of materials and workplaces, “a system of inquiry into creative practice,” in the artist’s own words. Rendón works with nature, not through the imitation of its forms but through the reproduction of its inexhaustible force.

En esta edición presentamos la obra de Ricardo Rendón, artista mexicano de extensa trayectoria. Su obra, expuesta en instituciones tales como Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid, podría entenderse como un registro y una acumulación de la transformación de materiales y lugares de trabajo, un sistema de investigación de la práctica creativa, en sus propias palabras. Rendón trabaja con la naturaleza, pero no a través de la imitación de sus formas si no a partir de la reproducción su inagotable fuerza.

We are also offering an article on the exhibition of the works of the young Mexican artist, Marcos Castro, titled Objetos necesarios, featured by Dot Fiftyone gallery. The drawings in ink and watercolor have inspired Janet Batet, the author of the text, to revisit the historical aesthetic category of the sublime to refer to these works. We are also visiting Moda ficción, naturaleza, joyas y bicicletas, the first great retrospective that allows us to explore more than forty years of the trajectory of the outstanding Argentine artist Eduardo Costa, at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires.

También contamos con una nota sobre la exhibición Objetos necesarios, de Marcos Castro, joven artista, también procedente de México, en la galería Dot Fiftyone. Los dibujos en tinta y acuarela suscitan en Janet Batet, redactora de la nota, la tendencia a retomar la histórica categoría estética de lo sublime para referirse a ellos.

Visitamos también Moda ficción, naturaleza, joyas y bicicletas, la primera gran exposición antológica que permite recorrer más de 40 años de trayectoria del destacado artista argentino Eduardo Costa, en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires.

We are briefly touring the works of the well-known Peruvian artist Milagros de la Torre, currently living in New York. Her work, deeply concerned with present-day social issues, especially those of Latin America, projects an unusual beauty that becomes disconcerting when one comes into contact with the narratives that have given rise to their creation. We are also reviewing the work of the young Venezuelan artist Federico Ovalles-Ar, whose Solo Project won an award in the past edition of PArC, Perú Arte Contemporáneo, Lima, Peru. 2014.

Asimismo, desplegamos un breve recorrido de la trayectoria de la ya consagrada artista peruana Milagros de la Torre, residente en Nueva York. Su obra, profundamente comprometida con problemáticas sociales actuales, especialmente de Latinoamérica, proyecta una belleza inusitada que desconcierta al tomar contacto con los relatos que motivaron su creación. Reseñamos también la obra del joven artista venezolano Federico Ovalles-Ar, quien obtuvo el Reconocimiento a mejor Solo Project en la pasada edición de PArC, Perú Arte Contemporáneo, Lima, Perú. 2014.

We wished to leave a testimony of the most outstanding biennials which have taken place in the region in recent months: the 19th Arte Paiz Biennial, in Guatemala; the 31st São Paulo Biennial, and the 2nd Montevideo Biennial. And we are also showcasing Roberto Huarcaya’s participation in the 2014 Daegu Photography Biennial, South Korea.

Quisimos dejar registro de las bienales más destacadas que han tenido lugar en la región en los últimos meses: la 19ª Bienal de Arte Paiz, en Guatemala, la 31ª Bienal de São Paulo y la 2da Bienal de Montevideo. In this edition, we are interviewing Alain Dominique Perrin and Hervé Chandès, president and director, respectively, of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of this institution.

And to conclude, we feature a series of brief reviews on the best exhibitions by Latin American artists held all over the world.

t the core of Ricardo Rendón’s artistic process is the notion that there are endless possibilities of creation starting from an already given set of elements. Certainly, every artistic creation is characterized by a singular rearrangement of materials aimed at achieving a new form. Pure creation, in the sense of making something out of nothing, is a naïve ambition.

The artist can only rearrange matter into new forms. As stated

by Hélio Oiticica, who learned it from Yoko Ono, the role of the artist is not to create things. Everything is already given, what else could one create? The role of the artist is to change the value of things.

Ricardo Rendón knows it well, and emphasizes transformation as the only possible act of creation. In the artist’s own words, his production is “a system of inquiry into creative practice.”

His strategy is to rearrange matter –since creating matter is not possible– mirroring a vital flow of continuous transformation.

A passage from Henri Bergson’s The creative evolution explains the beauty of engendering new form in a world made of a fixed amount of matter: Consider the letters of the alphabet that enter into the composition of everything that has ever been written: we do not conceive that new letters spring up and come to join themselves to the others in order to make a new poem. But that the poet creates the poem and that human thought is thereby made richer, we understand very well (...) Thus, that the number of atoms composing the material universe at a given moment should increase, runs counter to our habits of mind, contradicts

n el corazón del proceso artístico de Ricardo Rendón se encuentra la noción de que existen infinitas posibilidades para la creación a partir de un conjunto de elementos ya existentes. Sin duda, lo que caracteriza a toda creación artística es un reordenamiento particular de materiales cuyo propósito es el logro de una nueva forma. La creación pura, en el sentido de crear algo de la nada, constituye una ambición ingenua.

El artista sólo puede reordenar la materia para darle nuevas formas. Como afirmaba Hélio Oiticica, quien a su vez lo aprendió de Yoko Ono, el rol del artista no es el de crear cosas.

Ya todo existe, ¿qué más podría uno crear? El rol del artista es el de cambiar el valor de las cosas.

Ricardo Rendón lo sabe muy bien y hace hincapié en la transformación como el único acto posible de creación. En las propias palabras del artista, su producción es “un sistema de investigación de la práctica creativa”. Su estrategia consiste en reordenar la materia – puesto que no es posible crear materia – reflejando un flujo continuo de transformación.

Un pasaje de La evolución creadora, de Henri Bergson, explica la belleza de engendrar nueva forma en un mundo constituido por una cantidad fija de materia: Consideremos todas las letras del alfabeto que entran en la composición de todo lo que haya podido ser escrito: no concebimos que otras letras surjan ahora y vengan a añadirse a aquéllas para componer un nuevo poema. Pero que el poeta crea el poema y que el pensamiento humano se enriquece con él, esto lo comprendemos perfectamente (...) Así, que aumente el número de átomos que componen el universo material en un momento dado, se opone a nuestros hábitos mentales y contradice nuestra experiencia. Pero que una realidad de orden considerablemente diferente y que contrasta con el átomo como el pensamiento del poeta con las letras del alfabeto, se vea incrementada por adiciones bruscas, no resulta inadmisible…1 El alfabeto de Rendón se basa en el círculo, una forma simple que aplica a diferentes materiales, obsesivamente, saltando del fieltro al cartón y la madera, como si no pudiera detener el movimiento incesante de sus manos. En este sentido, Rendón sigue la tradición de imitar a la naturaleza, tan cara a la historia del arte. No obstante, en lugar de imitar lo que la naturaleza produce, recrea la inagotable fuerza de producción de la naturaleza. En las obras de Rendón, la mimesis se enfoca en la

the whole of our experience; but that a reality of quite another order, which contrasts with the atom as the thought of the poet with the letters of the alphabet, should increase by sudden additions, is not inadmissible...1 Rendón’s alphabet is based on the circle, a simple shape he applies to different materials, obsessively, jumping from felt to cardboard to wood, as if he were unable to stop the endless movement of his hands. In this sense, Rendón follows the tradition of imitating nature that is so dear to the history of art.

However, instead of imitating what nature produces, he reenacts nature’s endless force of production. The mimesis in Rendón’s works aims at the natura naturans (nature naturing), instead of reproducing the passive result of nature’s force, the natura naturata (nature natured).

Therefore, do not expect to recognize preexistent forms. The focus here is on bringing to the world a form nature itself has not yet produced. The installation Bosque desnudo is derived from the repetitive movement of chiseling rings around tree trunks.

natura naturans (naturaleza que crea), en lugar de reproducir el resultado pasivo de la fuerza de la naturaleza, la natura naturata (naturaleza creada).

Por lo tanto, el espectador no debe esperar reconocer formas preexistentes. Aquí se pone el acento en traer al mundo una forma que la naturaleza no haya producido todavía. La instalación Bosque desnudo deriva del movimiento repetitivo que se produce al cincelar anillos alrededor de troncos de árboles. El resultado no tiene semejanza alguna con un bosque natural; sin embargo, la aspereza de las piezas, que revela la materia original, sugiere un poder para dar forma análogo al poder creador de la naturaleza. En Naturaleza posible, las áreas doradas circulares hacen hincapié en el círculo una vez más, mostrando que la elección de formas básicas de Rendón se encuentra naturalmente presente en la estructura de la natura naturata, que ubica su gesto obsesivo más cerca de los actos de la natura naturans.

En la mayoría de las piezas que tienen como soporte superficies bidimensionales tales como telas, el movimiento de “trazar círculos” se repite una y otra vez, hasta que el vacío sobrepasa a la materia de las superficies originales. En Área de corte, el fieltro industrial es perforado reiteradamente. Cuando los agujeros se unen, el resultado es el vacío, enmarcado por un borde intrincado, dando origen a “una realidad de orden

In Naturaleza posible the golden circular areas emphasize the circle again, showing that Rendón’s choice of basic shape is naturally present in the structure of natura naturata, which places his obsessive gesture closer to the acts of the natura naturans.

In most pieces that deal with two-dimensional surfaces such as fabric, the movement of “making circles” is repeated over and over, until emptiness surpasses matter on the original surfaces.

In Área de Corte industrial felt is repeatedly perforated. When the holes join together, the result is emptiness, framed by an intricate border, giving birth to “a reality of quite another order”, as we read in Bergson’s quote. In Patrones de trabajo (estados de transformación) voids cut out gracious curves in what would otherwise be a monotonous straight line, voids that need not be filled, matter that is made more malleable by the voids, and that gives itself to being folded in several forms, revealing its potential multiplicity.

Following a rule that applies also to wood and cardboard pieces, the discs subtracted from the original surfaces remain on the floor, piled in delicate mountains. In Sin límite, a wood panel has been covered with a golden layer before being perforated.

Ironically, the golden discs on the floor look like coins, perhaps in reference to our contemporary emptiness. Another possible reading for the recent use of gold in Rendón’s pieces points to

considerablemente diferente”, como se lee en la cita de Bergson.

En Patrones de trabajo (estados de transformación), los huecos recortan graciosas curvas en lo que de otro modo sería una monótona línea recta, vacíos que no necesitan ser llenados, materia a la que los vacíos tornan más maleable y que se presta a ser doblada para adquirir diversas formas, revelando su potencial multiplicidad.

Siguiendo la regla que también rige para las piezas en madera y en cartón, los discos recortados de las superficies originales permanecen en el piso, apilados en delicadas montañas. En Sin límite, un panel de madera ha sido cubierto por una capa dorada antes de ser perforado. Irónicamente, los discos dorados sobre el piso semejan monedas, tal vez haciendo referencia a nuestro vacío contemporáneo. Otra posible lectura del uso reciente del dorado en las obras de Rendón apunta a la luz dorada que durante siglos ha estado relacionada con el ámbito de lo trascendental en las obras de arte. Así, el vacío dorado podría hacer referencia a la búsqueda de significado que, desgraciadamente, no se puede satisfacer, del mismo modo que no se puede reconstruir la integridad reinsertando en la madera 31

the golden light that for centuries was related to transcendental realms in artworks. The golden emptiness thus might refer to a search for meaning that unfortunately one cannot fulfill, in the same way one cannot rebuild completeness by reinserting on the wood the little coins scattered on the floor.

The golden light receives a more contemporary approach in Hacia una arquitectura posible. Light here is fluorescent and cold, connected to copper pipes, as if it could flow through the concrete walls. The reference to Minimalism is clear, denying transcendence, validating materials and forms. In Equilibrio y Concentración the pipes become thin lines that connect dots, weaving a complex maze that ends on a golden weight that pulls everything towards the earth. No matter how much we would like to use art as a connection to a heavenly world, Rendón insists that there is mystery and magic enough in the material world, in the power of transformation of matter into new forms.

All the acts, all the gestures, mainly the repetitive ones, mold the world. There is no transcendental power executing this job; it is by rearranging matter, transforming it into a new shape, that reality is continually generated. The artist cannot create anything. Everything has already been created. His role is to change the form of matter, to change the value of things.

La luz dorada es objeto de un enfoque más contemporáneo en Hacia una arquitectura posible. Aquí la luz es fluorescente y fría, conectada a tuberías de cobre, como si pudiese fluir a través de paredes de concreto. La referencia al minimalismo es clara, negando la trascendencia, reafirmando el valor de los materiales y las formas. En Equilibrio y Concentración, las tuberías se convierten en finas líneas que conectan puntos, tejiendo un complejo laberinto que termina en una plomada dorada que hala todo hacia la tierra. Sin importar cuánto nos gustaría utilizar el arte como una conexión con un mundo celestial, Rendón insiste en que existe suficiente magia y misterio en el mundo material, en el poder de transformar la materia en nuevas formas.

Todas las acciones, todos los gestos, principalmente los repetitivos, moldean el mundo. No hay un poder trascendental que ejecute esta tarea; es reordenando la materia, transformándola en nuevas formas, que la realidad se genera constantemente. El artista no puede crear nada. Ya todo ha sido creado. Su rol consiste en cambiar la forma de la materia, en cambiar el valor de las cosas.

he work of Marcos Castro (Mexico City, 1981), delicate as it is, seems to renounce the emphatic axis that defines –and condemns– Western Art as an autonomous discipline. In fact, his proposal is masterfully structured just in the boundary between art and shamanism, between aesthetics and magical thinking. It is for this reason that when we enter the gallery, the empathy that results from the communion with the “object” –it is not by accident that Castro has titled the exhibition Objetos necesarios (Necessary Objects)– is of a mythical nature rather than an aesthetic one.

La pasión causada por lo grande y sublime en la naturaleza, cuando aquellas causas operan más poderosamente, es el asombro, y el asombro es aquel estado del alma en el que todos sus movimientos se suspenden con cierto grado de horror. En este caso, la mente está llena de su objeto, que no puede reparar en ninguno más, ni en consecuencia razonar sobre el objeto que la absorbe. De ahí nace el gran poder de lo sublime, que, lejos de ser producido por nuestros razonamientos, los anticipa y nos arrebata mediante una fuerza irresistible.

a obra de Marcos Castro (México D.F. 1981) parece, delicada, renunciar al eje enfático que define –y sentencia– al arte occidental en tanto disciplina autónoma. De hecho, su propuesta se estructura magistralmente justo al límite entre arte y chamanismo, entre la estética y el pensamiento mágico. Es por ello que cuando nos adentramos en la galería, la empatía resultante de la comunión con el “objeto” –no es casual que Castro haya titulado la muestra Objetos necesarios– es de orden mítico más que estético.

“Drawing has been a human need since the time of cave paintings”, Marcos Castro explains. “There is something organic about drawing that makes you feel you are part of the process. There is a bridge from the mind to your arms and from there to the materials that allows you to create something greater than yourself. That is my way of pursuing the sublime.”

Objetos necesarios, presented by Dot Fiftyone, comprises small, medium sized and large format drawings executed on paper or directly on the gallery wall, as well as a central installation which, like an enigmatic totem, inhabits the center of the gallery. In the drawings, done in ink and watercolor, what prevails is the delicate and spontaneous line inherent to the chosen medium, which results in the intimist atmosphere, so dear to Marcos Castro’s proposal. Invariably, the portrayed object – that necessary object – is placed in the focal point of the composition, invariably in the foreground, and rooted out of any context that may ultimately divert our attention from the center of interest.

Small dying birds, nondescript pebbles, tangled branches and disturbing, inaccessible monoliths are the recurring themes which, like a chorus or a compulsive need, are reiterated once and again before our initially amazed, and then transfigured, gaze.

In these whimsical landscapes portrayed by Marcos Castro – it is necessary to note that we are in the presence of a dialogical unit in terms of pictorial genre: portrait and landscape – there is a sort of psychological zoom-in that results in the plain detail through which the artist forces the viewer to focus on that minute spot – which would otherwise go unnoticed – of a vaster landscape which we will eventually and infallibly reconstruct in our mind as part of the work that stretches beyond the physical borders of the painting.

This synecdoche effect is fundamental for the restructuring of meanings – and priorities – that Objetos necesarios proposes, where the inductive reasoning incited through the work leads us to

“El dibujo ha sido una necesidad humana desde la edad de las pinturas rupestres” -explica Marcos Castro. “Hay algo orgánico sobre el dibujo que te hace sentir parte del proceso. Hay un puente de la mente a tus brazos y de ahí a los materiales que te permite crear algo más grande que tú. Esa es mi forma de búsqueda de lo sublime.”

Objetos necesarios, presentada por Dot Fiftyone, está integrada por dibujos de pequeño, mediano y gran formato realizados sobre papel o directamente sobre la pared del recinto, así como una instalación central que a modo de enigmático tótem habita el centro de la galería. En los dibujos, realizados con tinta y acuarela, predomina el trazo delicado y espontáneo inherente al medio elegido que se traduce en esa atmósfera intimista tan cara a la propuesta de Marcos Castro. Invariablemente, el ente retratado –ese objeto necesario- es ubicado en el centro focal de la composición, invariablemente en primer plano, y extirpado de todo contexto que pueda, en definitiva, desviar nuestra atención del centro de interés.

Pequeñas aves moribundas, anodinos guijarros, ramas enmarañadas e inquietantes monolitos inaccesibles son los temas recurrentes que como ritornelo o necesidad compulsiva se reiteran una y otra vez ante nuestra mirada, primero atónita, luego transfigurada.

En estos caprichosos paisajes de Marcos Castro –necesario es advertir que estamos en presencia a un tiempo de una unidad dialógica en lo que a género pictórico se refiere: retrato y paisaje- hay una suerte de zoom-in psicológico que resulta en el plano detalle a través del cual el artista obliga al receptor a concentrarse en ese punto ínfimo -de otro modo desapercibidode un paisaje más vasto que, luego, infaliblemente, reconstruimos en nuestra mente como parte de la obra que se extiende más allá de los límites físicos del cuadro.

Este efecto de sinécdoque es fundamental en la readecuación de significados –y prioridades- que propone Objetos necesarios donde el razonamiento inductivo incitado desde la obra nos lleva a la reformulación de nuestra percepción general de una realidad

reformulate our general perception of a much vaster reality. In this process of transfiguration, the repetition of a same motif once and again (pebble, bird, trunk) as in a sort of invocation or animist gesture, plays an essential role.

Ritual Object 1 and Ritual Object 2, both dated 2014, are vital in this respect. As a key element in these works, the silhouette of

a human torso with its arms raised to the heavens as part of an essential and primeval cult in the presence of the revered object, appears through the gouache of the background against which the object rests.

Unavoidable in these works is the association with the Platonic allegory of the cave myth, which seems to be reaffirmed by the insidious structure that occupies the center of the premises.

Composed of wooden strips arranged in a pyramidal shape and covered with canvas, the structure which might well be a bonfire or a torch becomes the central axis around which all the works revolve. The spectator, midway between the source of light and the works, would be able to generate his/her own shadows and project them on the paintings if the source of light were activated – which would not necessarily imply solely a physical action but also a mental state: that enlightenment, that state of transfiguration that we alluded to from the beginning.

Based on this central axis, all the works integrate into this single installation that is ultimately, the allegory or cornerstone that supports Objetos necesarios. And through which the gallery, in a sort of temporal liberating regression, gives up the white cube and becomes, once again, a cave, a niche that fosters this sublime act, the antique and necessary ritual that is human creation.

humano cuyos brazos frente al objeto venerado se levan al empíreo en medio de un culto esencial y primigenio.

Ineludible en estas obras la asociación con la alegoría platónica del mito de las cavernas que parece ser reafirmada por la insidiosa estructura que ocupa el centro del inmueble.

Compuesta por listones de madera presentados en arreglo piramidal y cubiertos por lienzo, la estructura que bien podría ser una hoguera o una antorcha, se convierte en eje central alrededor del cual giran todas las piezas. El espectador, a medio camino entre la fuente de luz y las obras sería capaz de generar sus propias sombras sobre los cuadros si la fuente de luz fuera activada –lo cual no tiene que alcanzarse únicamente por el acto físico sino de un estado mental: esa iluminación, ese estado de

transfiguración al que aludíamos desde un comienzo.

A partir de este eje central, todas las obras se integran en esa única instalación que es, en definitiva, la alegoría o piedra angular que soporta Objetos necesarios. Esa donde la galería, en una suerte de regresión temporal liberadora, renuncia al cubo blanco y deviene de nuevo cueva, nicho propiciador de ese acto sublime, esa ritual antiquísimo y necesario que es la creación humana.

ilagros de la Torre’s photographs explore the tensions between the image, power, and the body. Her works have always been skeptical with regard to photography’s eagerness to represent, questioning not only its apparent objectivity and its “truth effects”, but also critically reviewing the social conventions and institutional frameworks that orient its uses and meanings. De la Torre delves into the ways in which images influence people’s lives, observing the way in which power circulates and becomes crystalized: that is, the capacity of the image to produce identities, stimulate fantasies, redirect desires and organize behavior. Her photographs confront our wish to remember and fix history, making evident that what images narrate is always an incomplete account.

Several of her works appear to emerge as a challenge in the face of the “excess of realism” of the photographic image, posing questions with regard to their alleged status as “evidence”. It is not a coincidence that in several of her initial projects, the artist should have employed the grammars of crime scene photographs, of medical records, and even of criminology. In

De la Torre hurga en cómo las imágenes inciden en la vida de las personas, observando las maneras en que el poder circula y se cristaliza: es decir, la capacidad de la imagen de producir identidades, estimular fantasías, reconducir los deseos y organizar el comportamiento.

Sus fotografías confrontan los anhelos de recordar y fijar la historia, haciendo evidente que lo que las imágenes narran es siempre un relato incompleto.

Varios de sus trabajos parecen surgir como un desafío frente al ‘exceso de realismo’ de la imagen fotográfica, colocando preguntas ante su supuesto carácter de ‘evidencia’. No es casual que en varios de sus proyectos iniciales la artista haya empleado las gramáticas de la fotografía policial, de los padrones clínicos e

works such as Bajo el Sol Negro (Under the Black Sun) (19911993), Los Pasos Perdidos (The Lost Steps) (1996) or Páginas Dobladas (Folded Pages) (1996), Milagros de la Torre alludes to the close relationships between photography and institutions that developed during the 19th century, which also entailed the emergence of new observation practices and a new paradigm of knowledge. De la Torre examines those institutional operations of recording and classification of individuals, which have been intimately linked to the birth of the modern State and the expansion of colonial powers, pointing to the way in which these official procedures not only made it possible to produce but also to possess the meanings of those bodies. These governmental practices thus consolidated the public records of national States, as well as medical, juridical, and legal records, whose main function has been the regulation and the surveillance of individuals. In Páginas dobladas (1996), De la Torre photographed the admission forms of a hospital for patients with mental

En obras como Bajo el Sol Negro (19911993), Los Pasos Perdidos (1996) o Páginas Dobladas (1996), Milagros de la Torre alude a las estrechas alianzas que existen entre la fotografía y las instituciones que surgen durante el siglo XIX, con las cuales emergen también nuevas prácticas de observación y un nuevo paradigma de conocimiento. De la Torre examina aquellas operaciones institucionales de registro y clasificación de los sujetos, las cuales han estado íntimamente ligadas al nacimiento del Estado moderno y la expansión de los poderes coloniales, señalando la forma en que estos procedimientos oficiales no solo permitían producir sino también poseer los significados de aquellos cuerpos. Estas prácticas gubernamentales consolidaron así los registros públicos de los Estados nacionales y también los archivos médicos, jurídicos y legales, cuya función primordial ha sido la regulación y la vigilancia de los sujetos. En Páginas dobladas (1996) De la Torre fotografió formularios de ingreso de un hospital para enfermos mentales en Lima, los cuales aparecen ligeramente borrosos, oscurecidos y doblados, al interior de botiquines de hojalata blanca. Estos formularios exhiben los procedimientos de sistematización médica a los cuales son sometido los sujetos: fotografías de su cuerpo y de su rostro, pero además descripciones de sus características físicas, orígenes familiares y un informe de su aparente desorden sicológico. Lo que estos documentos muestran no son solamente ese conjunto de cuerpos declarados como ‘enfermos’, confinados y excluidos del espacio público, sino

disorders in Lima, which appear slightly blurred, darkened and folded inside white tinplate medical cabinets. Those forms show the procedures of medical systematization to which individuals are subjected: photographs of their body and face, but also descriptions of their physical characteristics, family origin, and a report of their apparent psychological disorder. What these documents show is not only this set of bodies declared “sick”, confined and excluded from the public space, but also the status of authority of these documents through which institutions manage the “inside” and the “outside” of the social body.

But that reflection on the legal reality of the photographic image is also an attempt to think from a perspective of vulnerability, contrasting the pretensions to permanence of photography and the ephemeral dimension of existence. Her works illustrate how every life is also defined by the ways in which it generates protection mechanisms and defense strategies. In many of her works it is possible to perceive allusions to fragility, but observed through traces and vestiges, such as pieces of clothing or other personal objects that appear as powerful metaphors for the perishability of the body. This is the case, for example, in Sin título, (Colgador, Medias.) (Untitled, Hanger, Stockings)(1992), in which seven small photographic negatives show women’s articles of clothing, a hanger and a body fragment. This look on clothes also appears in Los desaparecidos (The Disappeared) (1998), a large format triptych showing landscapes composed of earth, vegetation and traces of clothes displayed like fragments

Pero esa reflexión sobre la realidad legal de la imagen fotográfica es también un intento de pensar desde la vulnerabilidad, contraponiendo las pretensiones de permanencia de la fotografía frente a la dimensión efímera de la existencia. Sus obras nos hablan de cómo toda vida se define también por las maneras en las cuales genera mecanismos de protección y estrategias de defensa. En muchas de sus obras es posible percibir alusiones a la fragilidad pero miradas a través de huellas y vestigios, como pueden ser prendas de ropa u otros objetos personales que aparecen como poderosas metáforas de lo perecedero del cuerpo.

Por ejemplo, en Sin título, (Colgador, Medias.) (1992) donde siete pequeñas fotografías en negativo muestran prendas de vestir femeninas, un colgador y un fragmento de cuerpo. Esa mirada sobre la vestimenta aparece también en Los desaparecidos (1998), un tríptico de gran formato que muestra paisajes de tierra, vegetación y rastros de ropas a modo de fragmentos de siluetas sobre el suelo. Aquellas imágenes alegorizan esa ‘presencia de la ausencia’ en alusión a los miles de cuerpos detenidos y forzados

These images represent an allegory of that “presence of an absence” as an allusion to the thousands of bodies arrested and forced to disappear in situations of extreme horror and repression, as was the case in several countries in Latin America during the 1960s and 1990s.

Those projects may also be understood as a commentary on the way in which subjectivities are built in contexts of repression.

Her work has also been devoted to insistently explore the effects of that violence on the memory of bodies, but also the way in which the bodies themselves are accessories to that violence. Recently, her interest seems to have shifted from the observation of institutions as spaces of power to the technologies through which authority is imposed. De la Torre investigates the tools designed for the protection of the bodies, but also for their assault and domination. In Blindados (Armored)(2000), five small photographs show the particularities of armored vehicles in Mexico City. The minimal format of each of these images clashes with the hostility of the vehicles, pointing to the level of naturalized violence that prevails in the city. In

Estos proyectos pueden ser entendidos también como un comentario sobre la manera en que se construyen las subjetividades en contextos de represión. Su trabajo se ha dedicado a explorar insistentemente los efectos de esa violencia en la memoria de los cuerpos, pero también cómo los propios cuerpos son cómplices de esa violencia. En tiempos recientes su interés parece haberse desplazado de la observación de las instituciones como espacios de poder hacia las tecnologías a través de las cuales la autoridad se impone. De la Torre investiga las herramientas diseñadas para la protección pero también para el ataque y la dominación de los cuerpos. En Blindados (2000) cinco pequeñas fotografías muestran las particularidades del transporte blindado en Ciudad de México.

El formato mínimo de cada una de estas imágenes colisiona con la hostilidad de estos vehículos, advirtiendo el nivel de violencia naturalizada que prevalece en la ciudad. En Punzocortante (2000) la artista presenta un inventario de fotografías de armas ‘blancas’: quince cuchillos rústicos decomisados a delincuentes comunes que la artista fotografía a modo de catálogo.

Punzocortante (Sharp-Pointed Weapon)(2000), the artist presents an inventory of photographs of bladed weapons: fifteen rustic knives confiscated from common criminals which the artist photographs as in a kind of catalogue.

In other series the artist focuses her gaze on the garments and clothes associated to situations of conflict, as in the series Chalecos (Vests)(2007), a continuous screening of thirty-one models of bulletproof vests, allegories of that dimension of threat and loss of life. In Antibalas (Bulletproof)(2008), the artist documents eleven apparently ordinary articles of clothing, which serve as covert protection for those who wear them. As in other projects, what emerges here is a death drive that is also a harsh commentary on the way in which human relationships are constituted. The artist seems to wonder what the message conveyed by physical violence in the world is, and what is the limit that marks what it is permissible to do in our relationship with other bodies. There is a melancholy mood, as though the passage from life to death were always close at hand. “Those pieces of clothing already have a destiny written on them,” De la Torre points out, pushing us slightly towards the silent boundary of loss and mourning.1 What is brought to the forefront in her works are the bonds that constitute us as a social body, posing questions about our states of dependency and the frameworks of ethic responsibility 1 The artist interviewed by Edward J. En otras series la artista centra su mirada en los implementos de ropa y vestimentas asociadas a situaciones de conflicto, como la serie Chalecos (2007), una proyección continua de treinta y un modelos de chalecos blindados, que alegorizan esa dimensión de amenaza y de pérdida de la vida. En Antibalas (2008) la artista documenta once prendas de vestir de apariencia común y corriente que sirven de protección encubierta a quien lo lleva.

Como en otros proyectos, surge aquí una pulsión de muerte que es también un áspero comentario sobre como están constituidas las relaciones humanas. La artista parece preguntarse portador de qué mensaje es la violencia física en el mundo, y cuáles son los límites de lo que es permisible hacer en nuestra relación con otros cuerpos. Hay allí un ánimo melancólico, como si el paso de la vida a la muerte estuviera siempre próximo. “Aquellas piezas de ropa tienen ya un destino escrito en ellas” señala De la Torre, empujándonos ligeramente al límite silencioso de la pérdida y el duelo.1 Lo que se pone en primer plano en sus obras son los lazos que 1 Entrevista de Edward J. which are necessary in the processes of inhabiting. Beyond any legal definition of who we are –in which photography plays a significant role –what we actually are exceeds any legal framework and occurs in the context of passion, of desire, of grief, and of ire: “everything that pulls us out of ourselves links us to others, transports us, disintegrates us, involves us in lives that are not our own, irreversibly, if not fatally.”2 Those moments of relinquishment, precisely, appear to be recorded in her images, also posing an open question regarding how to imagine more sensitive and dignified ways of life in common.

nos constituyen como cuerpo social, lanzando interrogantes sobre nuestros estados de dependencia y los marcos de responsabilidad ética necesarios en los procesos de habitar. Más allá de toda definición legal de quienes somos –en la cual la fotografía cumple un papel significativo–, lo que efectivamente somos excede todo marco legal para ocurrir en la pasión, en el deseo, en la pena y en la ira: “todo aquello que nos arranca de nosotros mismos, nos liga a otros, nos transporta, nos desintegra, nos involucra en vidas que no son las nuestras, irreversiblemente, si es que no fatalmente”.2 Son precisamente esos momentos de desposesión los que parecen quedar registrados en sus imágenes, lo que es también una pregunta abierta por cómo imaginar formas más sensibles y dignas de vida en común.

he work of Federico Ovalles-Ar contrived on/plotted on the basis of two impending suspicions: on the one hand, that cities are told –and made- not only among their finished buildings and their monuments, but also in their accidental places, in their supplements, among the remains and the tracks left by the informal and uncontrolled actions of their inhabitants; on the other hand, that in the manner of an allegory, these “wasted” spaces (in permanent escape) that cities possess, narrate and make visible their most essential dynamics, the contradictions and fissures that describe their social, political and cultural “modes of cohabitation”. From the starting point of a calm reflection about these hidden ways of the urban, OvallesAr produces some pieces which fall within visual art like sorts of critical devices that point at a reinterpretation both of the fragile frontiers that distinguish the formal from the informal in the urban geography, and of the openness and potentialities that those “fleeing places” propose, announce and permit.

In this sense, the subject about which his artistic projects reflect is always the questioning of urban culture and of its diverse formulation mechanisms. For this reason, Latin American cities, Caracas for example, are outlined and narrated in his works from their most critical, complex and unintelligible zones, as well as from their most dynamic and uncertain ones: those in-complete, in-formal, scarce and unstable constructions and artifacts which cover and divide, organically speaking, these cities in any of their spaces (public and private) and which arise,

a obra de Federico Ovalles-Ar se trama a partir de dos sospechas inminentes: por una parte, que las ciudades se dicen –y se hacen– no sólo entre sus edificaciones acabadas y sus monumentos, sino también en sus lugares accidentales, en sus suplementos, entre los restos y los rastros que dejan las actuaciones informales e incontroladas de sus habitantes; por la otra, que a la manera de una alegoría, esos espacios “deshechos” (en fuga permanente) que poseen las ciudades relatan y hacen visible su dinámica más propia, las contradicciones y fisuras que detallan sus “modos de convivencia” social, política y cultural. A partir de una pausada reflexión en torno a estos modos ocultos de lo urbano, Ovalles-Ar produce unas piezas que se inscriben en la plástica a la manera de unos aparatos críticos que apuntan hacia una reinterpretación tanto de las frágiles fronteras que distinguen lo formal de lo informal en la geografía urbana, como de la apertura y potencialidades que esos “lugares en fuga” plantean, anuncian y permiten.

En este sentido, el sujeto acerca del que reflexionan sus proyectos plásticos es siempre el cuestionamiento de la cultura urbana y de sus diversos mecanismos de formulación. Por ello, la ciudad latinoamericana, Caracas por ejemplo, es delineada y relatada en sus obras desde sus zonas más críticas, complejas e ininteligibles, también más dinámicas e inciertas: esas

unpredictable, evidencing anachronistic and unclassifiable logics and “ways of life”.

In his works and individual shows, these locations or marginal and relegated contraptions are the horizon from which OvallesAr manages to elaborate an accidental and temporary genealogy of the city and of its ways of habitability. His installations and in situ interventions (for example, Tabiquería Contingente, 2014) point at the precarious building structures of those informal and spontaneous artifices that characterize these secondary sites, thus generating some vulnerable “fleeing places”, which challenge the body and the gaze of those who see them, as well as the institutional space that hosts them. Some fleeing places, poetical on account of their elusive condition, which manage to dissolve the roughness of the materials with which they are elaborated turning it into transience and absence, until the very idea of building becomes disarticulated.

Likewise, in his objects, in the Modelos sin escala (“Scaleless Models”) for example, he allegorically re-writes the city in its contrasts. These objects that function as an assemblage of impossible “architectural scale models” (with no possible continuation or actual model) are manufactured based on the forced concurrency of absolutely heterogeneous materials, so that they are resolved in a difficult unit, built precisely from their disparities and tensions, from their discrepancies and disagreements. These scale models or houses-objects are in charge of turning into concrete images the emotional tone of all these provisional and residual structures that anonymously and silently accompany the city’s life: the abandoned formworks of the buildings, the junk of street vendors, the possessions and cold dwellings of the street inhabitants.

Federico Ovalles-Ar states it explicitly: I am interested in working with those areas of the city that function like a “non city”, centering my attention in the urban chaos seen from its most severe contrasts, taking immediateness, temporariness and spontaneous planning as main axes of observation. From this careful observation, then, the residue arises as a symbol of the urban, yet not of the planned, controlled or parceled out city, but of its counterpart, the flexible and malleable one of the needs, of the setbacks, the unforeseen city that happens suddenly and that, for this very reason, is pure transience. His works turn the residue into a trace –into a track- and as W. Benjamin would say, they give rise to a reflective mode of the memory, thanks to which, beyond reminiscence, it is possible to critically re-inscribe, in the present scene, those “blind fields” in which the city is constant urgency and emergency, in which urbanity is made up of attempts and

construcciones y artefactos in-completos, in-formales, escasos e inestables que cubren y segmentan., orgánicamente, estas ciudades en cualquiera de sus espacios (públicos y privados) y que surgen, imprevisibles, evidenciando lógicas y “formas de vida” anacrónicas e inclasificables.

En sus trabajos y exposiciones individuales, estos emplazamientos o artilugios marginales y relegados son el horizonte desde el que Ovalles-Ar logra elaborar una genealogía accidental y supletoria de la ciudad, y de sus modos de habitabilidad. Sus instalaciones e intervenciones in situ (por ejemplo, Tabiquería Contingente, 2014) señalan las precarias estructuras constructivas de esas artificios informales y espontáneos que caracterizan estos sitios secundarios, generando así unos “lugares en fuga”, vulnerables, que retan al cuerpo y a la mirada de quien los ve, así como al espacio institucional que los alberga. Unos lugares en fuga, poéticos por su condición inasible, que logran disolver la rudeza de los materiales con que están elaborados convirtiéndola en transitoriedad y ausencia, hasta desarticular la idea misma de edificación.

Igualmente, en sus objetos, en los Modelos sin escala por ejemplo, rescribe alegóricamente la ciudad en sus contrastes.

Estos objetos que funcionan como un conjunto de “maquetas arquitectónicas” imposibles (sin prosecución posible ni referente real) están fabricados a partir de la concurrencia obligada de materiales absolutamente heterogéneos, por lo cual se resuelven en una unidad difícil, constituida justamente a partir de sus disparidades y tensiones, de sus discordancias y desencuentros.

Estas maquetas o casas-objetos se ocupan de concretar en imágenes el tono afectivo de todas esas estructuras provisionales y residuales que acompañan, anónima y silentemente, la vida de la ciudad: los encofrados abandonados de las edificaciones, los trastos de los vendedores ambulantes, las posesiones y moradas desabrigadas de los habitantes de la calle.

Federico Ovalles-Ar lo dice explícitamente: Me interesa trabajar con aquellas zonas de la urbe que funcionan como “no ciudad”, centrando mi atención en el caos urbano desde sus contrastes más severos, tomando la inmediatez, la provisionalidad y el ordenamiento espontáneo como principales ejes de observación. De esa observación minuciosa surge, entonces, el resto como un emblema de lo urbano, más no de la ciudad

endeavors, and in which citizenship is woven with the rural.

Because the residue, in its unexpected standstill, in its condition of vestige, is the place where the event that has already been “sur-vives” and turns into a type of “language”, entering into history. For this reason, it is always charged with a dynamic energy that connects imagination, memory and time, and which transfigures it into a hybrid form –bastard, half-caste- capable of becoming thought, reflection. Inhabiting those residues in a ductile way, those tracks left by the unforeseen city, always about to be born, Federico Ovalles-Ar not only takes the “temporariness” and its chaotic constructions as a theme, but also formulates them like an alternate narration of the urban ways of life, like a precarious and empty chronicle capable of casting doubts and of demanding reflections, and capable of evidencing that, in the heterogeneous Latin American city, citizenship is an exercise yet to come, a promise that exceeds its present and its presence, and that accounts for the difficult ways of a “common body” which cannot be reduced either to formal models or to ideological determinations.

To outline a city –be it in its monuments or in its hiding placesis always a political act, hence the works of Federico OvallesAr are a sort of archaeology of his “not linked to a specific place” modes, of his boundaries and movements, as well as of the various –and diverging- “communities of experience” that become established in it and prosper within it.

Porque el resto, en su inesperada detención, en su condición de vestigio, es donde el acontecimiento ya sido “sobre-vive” y se convierte en un tipo “lenguaje”, entrando en la historia. Por ello, está siempre cargado de una energía dinámica que conecta imaginación, memoria y tiempo, y que lo transfigura en una forma híbrida –bastarda, mestiza- capaz de hacerse pensamiento, reflexión. Habitando dúctilmente esos restos, esas huellas dejadas por la ciudad impensada, siempre en trance de nacer, Federico Ovalles-Ar no sólo tematiza la “provisionalidad” y sus construcciones caóticas, sino que las formula como una narración alterna de los modos de vida urbanos, como una crónica precaria y desprovista capaz de sembrar dudas y exigir reflexiones, y capaz de evidenciar que, en la heterogénea ciudad latinoamericana, la ciudadanía es un ejercicio por-venir, una promesa que excede su presente y su presencia, y que da cuenta de los difíciles caminos de un “cuerpo común” que no puede reducirse ni a modelos formales ni a determinaciones ideológicas.

Delinear una ciudad –sea en sus monumentos o en sus escondrijos- es siempre un acto político, de allí que las obras de Federico Ovalles-Ar sean una suerte de arqueología de sus modos “atópicos”, de sus lindes y desplazamientos, así como de las diversas –y divergentes– “comunidades de experiencia” que en ella se instalan y que en ella prosperan.

uatemala is a country that hurts, although surely, in this respect, it is not the only one in Latin America. Violence in its diverse forms cuts across all human relationships; it was sowed during colonial times by dint of racism and death; it was then reaped in the framework of its own constitutional history by appealing to genocide and more death. It persists today, nested and on the prowl; it germinates within each life. In 1978, when the first Arte Paiz Biennial (BAP) saw the light, the country’s scenario was not very different; however, this event has managed to survive the battering of the different crises of the past thirty-six years. This is, in itself, an important merit.

At the artistic level, the context has, indeed, changed.

Guatemala has gradually inserted itself in the multiple discussions taking place on a global scale, and a series of subjects and approaches have been brought up for debate, among them, the categories of center and periphery, clearly modern and colonial; the contemporary canon – if that diverse multiplicity can be contained in a “canon” – ; the unitary thought which, although criticized, still appears with great validity in some proposals; identity and the intersection of intermixing

uatemala es un país que duele, aunque seguramente en este sentido no se lleva la exclusiva de América Latina. La violencia en sus diversas formas atraviesa todas las relaciones humanas, fue sembrada durante la colonia a fuerza de racismo y muerte, se cosechó, luego, en el marco de su propia historia constitucional apelando al genocidio y más muerte. Perdura hoy, anidada y acechando, germina en el seno de cada vida. En 1978, cuando vio la luz la primera de las Bienales de Arte Paiz (BAP), el escenario del país no era muy distinto; sin embargo, este evento ha logrado sobrevivir a los embates de las distintas crisis de los últimos treinta y seis años. Eso es, en sí mismo, un mérito importante.

A nivel artístico el contexto sí ha cambiado, Guatemala se ha ido insertando en las múltiples discusiones que se dan a nivel mundial y se han puesto en debate una serie de temas y enfoques, tales como las propias categorías de centro y periferia, Lourdes De la Riva. – transculturation and art; in fact, from interculturality to the de-colonial proposal, all have been debates present in the country’s art system, making it possible to infer that the categories that revolve around this system are in dispute and being rethought.

Such was the setting for the presentation of the 19th edition (19BAP) from June 6 through 6 July in Guatemala City, based on the concept of “transvisibility”, a term coined in 1955 by the French poet Serge Venturini, who conceived it as an “interstitial passage between the visible and the invisible”. A timely bet to try to decipher this country from the interstices of thought and action, since while it is true that the frontiers between what is concealed and what is allowed to be seen have been well marked, it must be borne in mind that these divide, but at the same time, they are links. In this sense, the bet was ambitious in wanting to capture the depth of those processes and social problems that nobody wants to talk about. To this end, the exhibition was divided into four areas: specificities that name themselves; body, sexuality and territory; healing and self-knowledge, and masculinity and violence.

In order to respond to the challenge, artists rebelled in the face of the evident; they disrupted order and in their different acts of rebellion, created pieces that induce sociological reflections, because they pose an invitation to debate on that which is profound but invisible to the eyes trained to see only what allows itself to be seen. Therefore, this article does not pretend to be a review but presents itself as an analysis originating in the crossbreeding between social sciences and art, above all, because the proposals presented crystallize images of that historical

netamente modernas y coloniales; el canon contemporáneo, si es que esa diversa multiplicidad puede ser contenida en un “canon”; el pensamiento único que, aunque se critica, aparece aún con mucha vigencia en algunas propuestas; la identidad y la intersección entre mestizaje - transculturación y arte; incluso, desde la interculturalidad hasta la propuesta decolonial, todos han sido debates presentes en el sistema de arte del país, dejando entrever que las categorías que rodean a dicho sistema están en disputa y repensándose.

Ese fue el escenario sobre el que se presentó la 19ª edición (19BAP) desarrollada desde el 6 de junio al 6 de julio en la ciudad de Guatemala, a partir del concepto de “tranvisibilidad”, término acuñado en 1955 por el poeta francés Serge Venturini, quien lo concibió como un “pasaje intersticial, entre lo invisible y lo visible”. Una apuesta oportuna para tratar de descifrar a este país, desde los intersticios del pensar y el hacer, porque si bien es cierto que las fronteras entre lo que se oculta y lo que se deja ver han estado bien marcadas, no se debe olvidar que éstas separan pero a la vez son enlaces. En ese mismo sentido, la apuesta fue ambiciosa por querer capturar la profundidad de aquellos procesos y problemas sociales de los cuales no se quiere hablar. Para ello se dividió la muestra en cuatro áreas: especificidades que se nombran a sí mismas; cuerpo, sexualidad y territorio; sanación y autoconocimiento, así como, masculinidad y violencia.

Para responder al desafío, los artistas se rebelaron frente a lo evidente, trasgredieron el orden y en sus diferentes actos de rebelión gestaron piezas que provocan reflexiones sociológicas porque invitan a debatir sobre aquello profundo pero invisible a los ojos entrenados para ver sólo lo que se deja ver. Por tanto, este artículo no pretende ser una reseña sino que se presenta como un análisis surgido de la hibridación entre ciencias sociales y arte, sobre todo, porque las propuestas presentadas cristalizan imágenes de este momento histórico, tan complejo e interesante a la vez.

Mirando a través de las fisuras, las propuestas interpelan. Uno de los temas recurrentes es la crítica a la propia noción de historia. La vigencia de una forma lineal y de sumatoria de

moment, so complex and at the same time, so interesting.

Looking through the fissures, the proposals pose questions. One of the recurring subjects is the criticism of one’s own notion of history. The validity of a linear form and of a sum total of facts has been detonated. What is, then, the story one chooses to narrate? There are those who opt for gestating their own story through a new birth and propose to self-construct themselves by being reborn from a uterus – a bull that is mother and a father at the same time (Jorge de León. Estudio de Luz y Sombra, 2014), and there are those who self-sculpt themselves to make way for a new body, to die and be born, questioning and reproducing, at the same time, the pattern imposed. (Yavheni De León. Maquetaciones mentales, 2014).

On the other hand, they pose questions that intersect history, memory and identity: ¿Cuántas veces tendremos que morir para ser siempre nosotros? (Yasmin Hage, 2014). Does such a thing as a “national identity” exist? How has it been built? On the basis of romantic chronicles, or taking into account the bloody threads that irrupt like ghosts into memories? (Mario Santizo. El fantasma de la posguerra visita…, 2014). It is then a matter of proposing new questions, as when “post-war” children dare ask their parents how they could procreate amid so many broken bones, so many mutilated bodies during the long years of State terrorism in Guatemala. What is less tortuous, to love in the midst of that madness or to become blind, like Oedipus, so as not to be witnesses of the terrorism all around? (Julio Serrano. Edipo, 2014).

The bet is to choose history and (re) construct it, based on the recovery of narratives that may be recognized as one’s own, since should they remain immersed in apathy and silence, they would serve to feed moths and perpetuate the inexorable passage of time (Lourdes de La Riva, Papel y Memoria, Creadores ocultos, 2014). To recover history, perhaps, based on the negation of what it denies, that is, not accepting it as a mausoleum but reincarnating it through 66

A su vez, se plantean preguntas que interseccionan la historia, la memoria y la identidad: ¿Cuántas veces tendremos que morir para ser siempre nosotros? (Yasmin Hage, 2014). ¿Existe eso llamado “identidad nacional”?, ¿cómo se ha construido?, ¿a partir de crónicas románticas o tomando en cuenta los hilos sangrientos que irrumpen cual fantasmas en los recuerdos? (Mario Santizo.

El fantasma de la posguerra visita…, 2014). Se trata, entonces, de proponer nuevas interrogantes, como cuando lo hijos “de posguerra” se atreven a preguntarle a los padres como podían procrear en medio de tanto hueso partido, de tanto cuerpo mutilado durante los largos años de terrorismo de Estado en Guatemala. ¿Qué era menos tortuoso, amar en aquella locura o volverse ciegos, como Edipo, para no ser testigos del terror que les rodeaba? (Julio Serrano. Edipo, 2014).

La apuesta es a elegir la historia y (re) construirla, desde la recuperación de relatos que se reconozcan como propios, porque de permanecer en la apatía y el silencio, dichos relatos serán alimento de las polillas y del paso inexorable del tiempo (Lourdes de La Riva, Papel y Memoria, Creadores ocultos, 2014). Recuperarla, quizás, a partir de la negación de lo que niega, es decir, no aceptando la historia como mausoleo sino reencarnándola a partir de la recuperación de los legados que han dejado los ancestros (Manuel Antonio Pichillá. Glifos, 2014; Edgar Calel y Rosario Sotelo. Toj, 2014).

Otro tema transversal, ¡cómo no serlo!, es la violencia. Cuerpos femeninos, masculinos, transmutados que la han sufrido, pero se han animado a abandonar la victimización para recuperarse.

Another cross-cutting theme –how could it be otherwise! – is violence. Female bodies, male bodies, transmuted, which have suffered victimization but have dared to abandon it in order to recover. Thus, a new way of being reborn appears. Women’s artistic proposals seem to be supported by a shared reasoning, the confrontation with the different political imprints stamped on the mind and on the bodies. To this end they denounce, they make evident that which, by being considered “natural”, becomes invisible; they question the assigned corsets; the patriarchal bonds, the violence endured, from the most obvious to the most perversely concealed, and recovering from the immobility that the victim’s etiquette condemns them to, dare walk with a firm step.

There is no immanence; there is construction and re-construction based on a profound reflexive exercise, and the invitation to others to join in the struggle, in order to “heal”.

The 19BAP has confirmed, once again, its importance for the artistic development of this country, and it has been important to know and interpret this society. What remains ahead now is the challenge to continue transgressing, in order to avoid that art should incur in the positivist perversity of describing that which can be seen without daring to look beyond what is evident.

Without daring to be transvisible.

Aparece de esta forma otra manera de volver a parirse. Las propuestas artísticas de las mujeres parecen estar sostenidas por una argumentación compartida, el enfrentamiento a las diversas marcas políticas impresas en la memoria y en los cuerpos. Para ello denuncian, ponen en evidencia lo que por “natural” se invisibiliza, cuestionan los corsés asignados, las ataduras patriarcales, las violencias sufridas desde las más obvias a las más perversamente escondidas y recuperándose de la inmovilidad a la que condena la etiqueta de víctima, se animan a andar con paso firme. No hay inmanencia, hay construcción y reconstrucción a partir de un ejercicio reflexivo profundo y la invitación a otras, para unir luchas, para “sanar”.

La 19BAP ha confirmado una vez más su importancia en el desarrollo artístico de este país y ha sido importante para conocer e interpretar a esta sociedad. Queda ahora, por delante, el reto de seguir transgrediendo, para evitar, que el arte pueda caer en la perversidad positivista de describir lo que se ve sin atreverse a mirar más allá de lo evidente. Sin atreverse a ser transvisible.

s of September 6, the latest Bienal de São Paulo, one of the doyennes of the world biennial circuit, will be open to the general public. And emphasis should be laid on the expression “general public” because, even though since 2004 admission has been free of charge and the educational program of the Bienal has broadened its scope year after year, on this occasion several gestures indicate an opening to a new conception of the collective, in line with the movements that are arising worldwide, claiming a revision and an adjustment of the sense of democracy. An idea of dialogue, openness and transparency which already became manifest in the composition of the curatorial team, not made up of a chief curator and a support group, but a non-hierarchical assemblage of professionals, composed of Charles Esche, Galit Eilat, Nuria Enguita Mayo, Pablo Lafuente and Oren Sagiv. For the first time, the Bienal has a team which is not linked to Brazil or to America, whose members, upon their arrival, decided to open a dialogue through the local associate curators Benjamin Seroussi and Luiza Proença, and through multiple events and meetings, 68

Y hay que hacer énfasis en “todo el público” porque, si bien ya desde 2004 la entrada a la exposición es gratuita y su programa educativo se amplía año tras año, en esta ocasión varios gestos se abren a una nueva concepción de lo colectivo, en línea con los movimientos que están surgiendo en todo el mundo y reclaman una revisión y ajuste del sentido de democracia. Una idea de diálogo, abertura y transparencia que se manifestó ya en la composición del equipo curatorial, no conformado por un curador jefe más un grupo de apoyo sino un conjunto no jerárquico de profesionales, formado por Charles Esche, Galit Eilat, Nuria Enguita Mayo, Pablo Lafuente y Oren Sagiv. Por primera vez la bienal contaba con un equipo no vinculado a Brasil o a América, que decidió

characterized by the attitude of listening and of searching to understand the Brazilian context, with artists, collectives and other agents of the cultural scene.

This statement of intentions is now perceived as soon as the visitor enters the venue: for the first time security controls are not situated as soon as one crosses the doors at the level of Parque de Ibirapuera, but instead, that level is open to the free circulation of visitors, and the collective and debate projects are organized on it, those events in which the concept of reflection through training/education take precedence: the Mujuwara tree-school, which brings together the experiences of Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti in the Palestinian refugee camps, with the activities of the Brazilian group Contrafilé; the drawings that cover Dan Perjovschi´s crystals analyzing the local socio-economic situation, Bik van de Pol’s program of lectures, together with the School of Missing Studies announced in a great colored poster, or the library intervened by Erick Beltrán with new associations of references of bibliographical categories and infiltrations of poems and drawings in the books themselves.

The bet in How to (…) things that don’t exist, as explained by Esche, is to re-think (search, recognize, fight, read, use, imagine) social, economic or political models, taking the contemporary as skyline and proposing an art committed to its reality and that positions itself as a possible tool of change towards that future of unknown forms, but which could overcome modern conflicts in the representation of subjectivities.

As characteristics of this thinking, we could highlight the nonauthorial intent of each of the 81 projects (and not works) than make up the proposal, the insertion of modes normally not contemplated within an art exhibition, like theater, groups of urban action or activist collectives, and the positioning in the margins: getting away from the more established scenario to create dialogues among its components, whether in the treated themes, which under the prefix “trans-” cover forgotten or traditionally rejected subjectivities; in the selection of the artists from 34 different countries predominantly from the Geopolitical

a su llegada abrir el diálogo, a través a los curadores asociados locales Benjamin Seroussi y Luiza Proença, y con múltiples presentaciones y encuentros, caracterizados por la actitud de escucha y búsqueda de comprensión del contexto brasileño, con artistas, colectivos y otros agentes de la escena cultural.

Esta declaración de intenciones se percibe ahora nada más entrar en la sede: por primera vez los controles de seguridad no están apenas se atraviesan las puertas a nivel del Parque de Ibirapuera, sino que ese nivel se abre a la libre circulación, situando en él los proyectos colectivos y de debate, aquellos donde el concepto de reflexión a través de la formación / educación prima: la escuela-árbol Mujuwara que reúne las experiencias de Sandi Hilal y Alessandro Petti en los campos de refugiados palestinos con las actividades del grupo brasileño Contrafilé; los dibujos que recubren los cristales de Dan Perjovschi analizando la situación socioeconómica local, el programa de conferencias de Bik van de Pol junto con la School of Missing Studies anunciados en un gran cartel colorido, o la biblioteca intervenida por Erick Beltrán con nuevas asociaciones de referencias de categorías bibliográficas e infiltraciones de poemas y dibujos en los propios libros.

La apuesta en Como (…) cosas que no existen, como explica Esche, es la de repensar (buscar, reconocer, luchar, leer, usar, imaginar) modelos sociales, económicos o políticos, teniendo como línea de horizonte lo contemporáneo y proponiendo un arte comprometido con su realidad y que se posicione como posible herramienta de cambio hacia ese futuro de formas desconocidas, pero que en la representación de subjetividades podría superar conflictos modernos. Como características de este pensamiento se podría señalar la intención no autoral de cada uno de los 81 proyectos (y no obras) que forman la propuesta, la inserción de modos normalmente no contempladas dentro de una exposición de arte, como teatro, grupos de 69

South, or in the focus of activities carried out and those to come, which happen in neighborhoods of the city’s periphery or involve groups normally excluded from this debate.

It would be impossible to attempt to map this condition of contemporaneity, this talking about the uncertain, unless this is done upon the ruins of former models, or at least this is what we glimpse in the selection of works shown at the Bienal.

Articulated around figures who are pioneers in the questioning of absolute models and established codes, new critiques and calls to the creation of new logics leak through, which although they may have resonances in theories of the absurd, point to a more constructive spirit. While not wishing to categorize the exhibition, we might say that some thematic nuclei may be discerned, all of them with transgressions and pollutions.

Concerning the projects of the park area, there is a proposal for new educational models or rupture of the transmission codes of classical knowledge. From the experimentation of Republican Spain La nueva escuela in an installation by Archivo F.X. and Pedro G. Romero; the audiovisual The Revolution must be a school of unfettered thought by Jakob Jakobsen and María Berríos, on the experience of the Cuban exhibition Del tercer mundo in 1968 and its attempt to create new museographic languages; the taxonomic process of new beings and objects more related to the emotional than to the scientific in The name giver, by Michael Kessus Gedalyovich; to the impossibility of the archive and inherited timelines of methods illustrated in the mental maps and drawings of A research, by Lea Perjovschi.

The insertion of the civilized man in social systems with a static conception appears in the two parts of The incidental insurgents by Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, a recreation through video and the documentation of anarchist biographies and characters from novels by Bolaño in the search of construction of an identity in crisis; the dialectic and ironic revision of the control procedures in Cuba led by the hand of Lázaro Saavedra; the scenographic setting of the Colombian group Mapa Teatro – Laboratorio de Artistas, entitled Los incontados; or in the reflection based on the methods for producing textiles in America and Europe rendered in a metaphorical way in the carnivalesque images of the project Loomshuttles, Warpaths, by Ines Doujak and John Barker.

Articulating the central zone of the so-called area of the Columns (the most classical in its disposition of consecutive rooms) is the project by Juan Downey Video Trans Américas, a 70

acción urbana o colectivos activistas, y el posicionamiento en las márgenes: salir de la escena más establecida para crear diálogos entre sus componentes, ya sea en las temáticas tratadas, que bajo el prefijo de “trans-“ abarcan subjetividades olvidadas o rechazadas tradicionalmente; en la selección de los artistas de 34 países diferentes predominantemente del Sur Geopolítico, o en el foco de actividades realizadas y por venir que se desarrollan en barrios de la periferia de la ciudad o con grupos excluidos normalmente de este debate.

Para intentar mapear esta condición de contemporaneidad, este hablar de lo incierto, no se podría si no partir de la ruina de modelos anteriores, o al menos eso se vislumbra en la selección de trabajos presentes en la bienal. Articulados entorno a figuras precursoras en el cuestionamiento de modelos absolutos y códigos establecidos, se filtran nuevas críticas y llamados a la creación de nuevas lógicas, que si bien pueden tener resonancias de teorías de lo absurdo apuntan a un espíritu más constructivo.

Sin querer categorizar la exposición, si se vislumbran algunos núcleos temáticos, todos ellos con transgresiones y contaminaciones.

En conexión con los proyectos del área del parque, existe una propuesta de nuevos modelos educativos o ruptura de los códigos de transmisión del conocimiento clásico. Desde la experimentación de la España republicana La nueva escuela en una instalación de Archivo F.X. y Pedro G. Romero; el audiovisual The Revolution must be a school of unfettered thought, de Jakob Jakobsen y María Berríos sobre la experiencia de la exposición cubana Del tercer mundo en 1968 y su intento de creación de nuevos lenguajes museográficos; el proceso taxonómico de nuevos seres y objetos más relacionados con lo afectivo que con lo científico de The name giver, de Michael Kessus Gedalyovich; hasta la imposibilidad del archivo y líneas de tiempo históricas heredadas de métodos ilustrados en los mapas mentales y dibujos de A research, de Lea Perjovschi.

La inserción en sistemas sociales con una concepción estática del hombre civilizado aparece en el las dos partes de The incidental insurgents, de Basel Abbas y Ruanne Abou-Rahme, una recreación a través del video y la documentación de biografías anarquistas y personajes de novela de Bolaño en la búsqueda de la construcción de una identidad en crisis; la revisión dialéctica e irónica de los procedimientos de control en Cuba de la mano de Lázaro Saavedra; el montaje escenográfico del grupo colombiano Mapa Teatro – Laboratorio de Artistas con el título Los incontados; o en la reflexión desde los métodos productivos textiles en América y Europa metaforizados en imágenes carnavalescas del proyecto Loomshuttles, Warpaths, de Ines Doujak y John Barker.

Articulando a la zona central de la llamada área de las columnas (la más clásica en su disposición de salas consecutivas) está el proyecto de Juan Downey Video Trans Américas, trabajo que en los sesenta preveía recorrer el continente de norte a sur para reunir, a través de la técnica cinematográfica visada como revolucionaria, la diversidad cultural y así servir de puente para el conocimiento y re-concepción de los parámetros temporales y espaciales. En conexión y relacionado también con discursos post-coloniales de valoración de lo indígena, como cultura masacrada y recuperación de conocimientos olvidados,

work which in the 60s proposed to travel across the continent from north to south to assemble, through the cinematographic technique identified as revolutionary, cultural diversity, and thus act as a bridge for the knowledge and reconception of temporal and spatial parameters. Connected to this and in relation to the post-colonial discourse of valuation of the indigenous, as a massacred culture and recovery of forgotten knowledge, three Brazilian proposals: Clara Ianni’s video together with the founder of the Mães de Maio, Débora Maria da Silva, on people who went missing both during the military dictatorship and recently as a result of actions of commandos, the song of Guaraní Indian Almires Martins filmed by Armando Queiroz and photographed by Marcelo Rodrigues; or the construction of a Casa de Caboclo, midway between the living and the ritual place, by Arthur Scovino.

To talk about violence and new uses, from terrifyingly repressive violence to battlefield for community’s rights, the point of departure is the installation of Juan Carlos Romero’s archive Violencia; then there are recent works, among which the video Wonderland, by Turkish artist Halil Altindere, a fiction in the form of a rap video clip which picks up the anger about the speculative movements and about gentrification in Istanbul, and the small installation of video and documents by Gabriel Mascaró, Não é sobre sapatos, a confrontation of the movements of the protestors and the infiltration techniques of the police in the latest demonstrations in Brazil, through the selection of images of the participants’ shoes, are worth mentioning.

tres propuestas brasileñas: el video de Clara Ianni junto a la fundadora de las Mães de Maio, Débora Maria da Silva, sobre desaparecidos tanto durante la dictadura militar como en las acciones de los comandos actuales, el canto del indio guaraní Almires Martins filmado por Armando Queiroz y fotografía de Marcelo Rodrigues; o la construcción de una Casa de Caboclo, entre el lugar de vivienda y ritual de Arthur Scovino.

Para hablar de violencia y nuevos usos, de terroríficamente represora a campo de lucha de derechos de la comunidad, se parte de la instalación del archivo de Juan Carlos Romero Violencia a trabajos recientes entre los que destacan el video Wonderland, del artista turco Halil Altindere, una ficción en forma de videoclip de rap que recoge la rabia por los movimientos especulativos y de gentrificación en Estambul, y la pequeña instalación de video y documentación de Gabriel Mascaró, Não é sobre sapatos, una confrontación de los movimientos de los manifestantes y las técnicas de infiltración de la policía en las últimas manifestaciones sucedidas en Brasil, a través de la selección de imágenes de los zapatos de los asistentes.

The starting point, between the search of the transcendent and the political uses of religion, could be situated in Val del Omar’s movies, made in the Spain of the 1950s as an attempt to liberate mystical encounter through the experimentation of the filmed image, which connect with Joan Baer´s esoteric paintings and Teresa Lanceta´s tapestries, together with the questioning of structures and beliefs organized in the video Infierno on the new temple of Salomon in São Paulo by Yael Bartana, the new communist gospel of Letra morta, by Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa, or the film by Kasper Akhøj and Tamar Guimarães, A familía do Capitão Gervásio, which compares with dreamlike aesthetics the urban utopias of the spiritist religion and the modern Brazilian project.

This assemblage of proposals of transformations, with open and participatory formats, many of which do not originate in or deal with the discussion on formal and autonomous art, is characterized by realistic representation and in general, by identifiable signs, with three important exceptions: the photographs and sculptures by Kransinski, reflections on the spatial relationships in the context of Poland of the 1970s, and two current reflections, that of Waalid Rad’s panels and the conflicts between institutional globalization and traditional Arab representation, and the deconstruction and recontextualization in the exhibition space itself of Jorge Oteiza’a abstract sculpture

The 31st Biennial will be held through December 7, with an active program of side events. The challenge, that true connection with society beyond the artistic and that rupture, perhaps impossible, with our modern past, to look into not definitive possibilities of society/societies, is already set out. We are reminded of this by the infiltration of Marta Neves’ Non-ideas banners, a vindication of the need to use our imagination.

Este conjunto de propuestas de transformaciones, con formatos abiertos y participativos, muchos de ellos que no provienen o tratan la discusión del arte formal y autónomo, se caracteriza por la representación realista y en general de signos identificables, con tres importantes excepciones: las fotografías y esculturas de Kransinski, reflexiones sobre las relaciones espaciales en el contexto de la Polonia de los setenta, y dos reflexiones actuales la de los paneles de Waalid Rad y los conflictos entre globalización institucional y representación tradicional árabe, y la deconstrucción y recontextualización en el propio espacio expositivo por Asier Mendizabal de la escultura abstracta de Jorge Oteiza.

Hasta el 7 de diciembre, y con un activo programa paralelo, se podrá visitar esta 31ª Bienal. El desafío, esa real conexión con la sociedad más allá de lo artístico y esa ruptura, quizá imposible, de nuestro pasado moderno para mirar posibilidades no definitivas de sociedad/sociedades, está ya planteado. Lo recuerdan infiltrándose con pancartas las No-ideas de Marta Neves, una reivindicación de la necesidad de usar nuestra imaginación.

The Montevideo Biennial Looks 500 Years into the Future LA BIENAL DE MONTEVIDEO MIRA 500 AÑOS HACIA EL FUTURO Ana Martínez Quijano Buenos Aires

ontevideo. The convening power of contemporary art is on the rise and the announced crisis involving b iennials has been left behind. After a successful debut, the Montevideo Biennial opened its doors the past week for its second edition with the participation of more than fifty contemporary artists from five continents and a brilliant vernissage. The palace that hosts the central offices of the Banco República and two nearby buildings in the Old City are the spaces that showcase the works in the mega-show 500 Años de Futuro (500 Years of Future), the ambitious theme addressed by the curator Alfons Hug. Like an orchestral conductor, Hug set the Biennial in motion and activated in that instant the huge human-powered clock placed on a platform in the middle of the impressive hall. Made up of wooden planks that give shape to the numbers, the German artist Mark Formanek’s clock combines the digital format with the primitivism of performance: the workers move the planks about to display the real time. The anachronism of that race against time takes place while the sound of the bells that pull the viewer towards the past is heard, loudly. “In the year 1650 King Phillip III donated a clock that is considered to be the oldest clock in America to the Comayagua Cathedral in Honduras,” Hug and the co-curator Santiago Tavella explain, and they add that it still works. “Even time was imported from Europe,” Hug highlights.

It is impossible to think about the future, about such an encompassing future – 500 years – without the vision of the past, which opens up the possibility of understanding the ambitious theme of this mega-exhibition. Two temporal dimensions converge in the concept of the works at the Biennial: the past symbolized by the bells, present in the work of the Honduran artists Adán Vallecillo and Leonardo González, and the future, which may be discerned as an ungraspable instant. Goethe noted that “the things of this world which our senses perceive have no real existence: they are always becoming, they never are.”

And the images coincide with the ideas. This reflective trend inspires the illustrated maps by the Argentine artist Adriana

ontevideo. El poder de convocatoria del arte contemporáneo va en aumento y la anunciada crisis de las bienales ha quedado atrás. Luego de un exitoso debut, la Bienal de Montevideo abrió la semana pasada las puertas de su segunda edición con más de 50 artistas contemporáneos de cinco continentes y un brillante vernissage. El palacio del Banco República y dos edificios aledaños de la ciudad vieja son los espacios que albergan las obras de la megamuestra 500 Años de Futuro, ambicioso tema que aborda el curador Alfons Hug. Como un director de orquesta, Hug puso en marcha la Bienal y echó a andar en ese instante, el inmenso reloj de tracción humana ubicado sobre una tarima en medio del imponente Hall. Realizado con tablones de madera que configuran los números, el reloj del artista alemán Mark Formanek conjuga el formato digital con el primitivismo de la performance: los trabajadores acarrean las tablas para diseñar la hora en tiempo real. El anacronismo de esa carrera contra el tiempo se desarrolla mientras, potente, se oye el sonido de las campanadas que arrastran al espectador hacia el pasado. “En el año 1650 el Rey Felipe III donó un reloj considerado el más antiguo de América a la Catedral de Comayagua de Honduras”, explican Hug y el co-curador Santiago Tavella, y agregan que todavía funciona. “Hasta el tiempo fue importado de Europa”, subraya Hug. Resulta imposible pensar en el futuro, en un futuro tan amplio -de 500 años-, sin la visión del pasado, así se abre la posibilidad de entender el ambicioso motivo esta megamuestra. En el concepto de las obras de la Bienal confluyen dos dimensiones temporales: el pasado de las campanadas, presente en la obra de los hondureños Adán Vallecillo y Leonardo González, y el futuro que se adivina como un instante inasible. Goethe observó que no existe el presente sino tan sólo devenir.

Y las imágenes coinciden con las ideas. Esta corriente reflexiva inspira los mapas ilustrados de la argentina Adriana Bustos.

Bustos. The project Imago Mundi is a recording of times, centuries, territories, all of them different. In it the viewer may find, gathered together by the prodigious memory of the artist– a genuine explorer –, the Magdalena River in Colombia, the Mekong in Southeastern Asia, the Paraná and the Río de la Plata , with the images of the their fauna, flora, inhabitants, the traces of lost civilizations and the memories that emerge uncontrollably, like the hammock of The General in His Labyrinth or Marguerite Duras’ portrait. Time is also interwoven in the young Uruguayan artist Paola Monzillo’s beautiful tapestry: some designs of preColumbian textiles and the maps of Ibero-American cities governed by the Laws of the Indies.

The young Chilean art student Francisco José Espinosa Silva features another montage of heterogeneous time periods in his painting La batalla de Parque Baquedano (The Battle of Parque Baquedano). His work evokes Cándido López’ 19th-century style inside a broken frame he found, discarded, in a street.

memoria de la artista, una genuina expedicionaria, los ríos Magdalena de Colombia, el Mekong del sudeste asiático, el Paraná y el Río de la Plata, con las imágenes de la fauna, la flora, los pobladores, los rastros de las civilizaciones perdidas y los recuerdos que afloran sin freno, como la hamaca de El general en su laberinto o el retrato de Marguerite Duras.

En el bello tapiz de la joven uruguaya Paola Monzillo también se entrecruza el tiempo: algunos diseños de textiles precolombinos y los mapas de ciudades iberoamericanas donde regían las Leyes de Indias.

Otro montaje de tiempos heterogéneos presenta el joven estudiante de arte chileno Francisco José Espinosa Silva en su pintura La batalla de Parque Baquedano. Su obra evoca el estilo decimonónico de Cándido López dentro de un marco roto que encontró tirado en la calle. Camila Borgna García ha tejido con lana, plástico, dos agujas y un telar, un tapiz donde las formas recuerdan el exaltado dripping de Jackson Pollock. Las ruinas del siglo XX están fotografiadas por Gian Paolo Minelli. En las imágenes de una fábrica de pescado incendiada, los grafitis blancos reverberan sobre el aterciopelado hollín de las paredes.

Al ingresar al Banco, entre dos columnas de mármol majestuosas se divisa una enorme pintura de Eduardo Stupía, artista que se ubica en el umbral de la figuración, porque la materia que trabaja el artista es la cualidad evocativa que poseen las cosas. En su pintura la figuración (ruinas, ríos, templos, bosques, arroyos, remolinos, estructuras geológicas, cascadas o plantas) tiende a deshacerse y las formas se tornan más y más evasivas. of Jackson Pollock’s frenzied dripping. The ruins of the 20th century have been photographed by Gian Paolo Minelli. In the images of a burnt down fish factory, white graffiti reverberate on the velvety soot that covers the walls.

On entering the Bank, between two majestic marble columns, visitors get sight of a huge painting by Eduardo Stupía, an artist positioned on the threshold of figuration, because the material he works with is the evocative quality that things possess. In his painting, figuration (ruins, rivers, temples, forests, brooks, whirlpools, geological structures, cascades or plants) tends to dissolve, and forms become more and more elusive. On the other hand, the large mural My private downtown, by Franz Ackermann, an artist of the global world on permanent tour, gathers together buildings, landscapes, and also the roads that lead to those colorful and vibrant geographies. Ackermann painted in situ, with the earth tones of the Uruguayan people, views of the Plaza Independencia in Montevideo and of Artigas’ equestrian monument.

The Biennial is displaying this year the share of spectacularity that art has gained in this last decade. There are surprising works in this show. Leandro Erlich´s installation replicates a real-size Montevideo Building. Then, by means of a trick – a glossy fabric with a specular effect placed at 45 degrees that mirrors the façade painted on the ground – the spectators entering the installation will appear in that universe of fictions; they will be seen climbing or hanging from the building.

A scaffold holding the strange forest with paper leaves by Rita Fischer stands in an angle of the room. The smoke emanating suddenly, an intervention by Lucía Pitaluga, emphasizes the theatricality and the scenographic effect. Among the videos screened in the middle of the room, the sublime condition of a trip by boat by Cao Guimaraes and the humor of Humberto Vélez stand out, as does, above all, the artist and theoretician Luis Camnitzer, who assumes the unexpected role of juror in a beauty contest in Panamá and crowns Jennifer Brown as Miss Education.

The main show occupies the solid architecture of the bank and expands to the nearby buildings; the videos and installations reach the bank’s annex on Zabala Street, the church of San Francisco de Asís (St. Francis of Assisi), and the Museum of Decorative Arts-Taranco Palace. In the video La conquista de lo inútil (The Conquest of the Useless), Daniel Beerstecher narrates the story of a trip and of the sailing boat he built in Berlin to cross the Argentine Patagonia. The difficulties he experienced with the Customs forced him to buy another boat in Buenos Aires, and so the image of the sailing boat became a mirage. The artist acknowledges the influence of Werner Herzog’s film Fitzcarraldo in this work, as well as the romantic travelers’ yearning for permanent traveling, a desire shared by the Biennial’s artists and its curator. However, in a world where undiscovered places no longer exist, the romantic-like search for pathos, for remoteness and strangeness only generates the

La Bienal exhibe este año la cuota de espectacularidad que ha ganado el arte en esta última década. Hay obras sorprendentes.

La instalación de Leandro Erlich replica un Edificio Montevideo en tamaño real. Luego, por medio de un truco -una tela espejada colocada a 45 grados que refleja la fachada pintada en el suelo-, los espectadores que ingresan a la instalación aparecerán en ese universo de ficciones, se los verá escalando o colgados del edificio.

En un ángulo del salón se levanta un andamio poblado por el extraño bosque con hojas de papel de Rita Fischer. El humo que emana de repente, una intervención de Lucía Pitaluga, acentúa la teatralidad y el efecto escenográfico. Entre los videos ubicados en medio de la sala, se destaca la condición sublime de un viaje en barco de Cao Guimaraes y el humor de Humberto Vélez y, sobre todo, del artista y teórico Luis Camnitzer, quien asume el inesperado papel de jurado de un concurso de belleza en Panamá y corona a Jennifer Brown con el título de Miss Education.

La muestra madre ocupa la sólida arquitectura bancaria y se extiende hasta pocos pasos de allí, los videos e instalaciones llegan hasta el Anexo Zabala, la Iglesia San Francisco de Asís y Museo de Artes Decorativas-Palacio Taranco. En el video La conquista de lo inútil, Daniel Beerstecher relata la historia de un viaje y del velero que construye en Berlín para cruzar la Patagonia argentina. Las vicisitudes que le depara la aduana lo obligan a comprar otro barco en Buenos Aires y así, la imagen del velero se transforma en un espejismo. El artista reconoce en la obra la influencia del film Fitzcarraldo de Werner Herzog y el anhelo del viaje permanente de los viajeros románticos, un afán compartido por los artistas de la Bienal y su curador. No obstante, en un mundo donde ya no existen lugares ignotos, la búsqueda del pathos, la lejanía y el extrañamiento al modo romántico, solo genera la ansiedad que depara la búsqueda como aventura constante. “Estaremos bien aconsejados si entendemos el futuro por medio de la visión de los artistas”, afirma Hug. La instalación de Marcelo Moscheta, al reiterar las caprichosas formas de las márgenes del río Uruguay en parafina, una materia blanca e inestable, se adivina como una respuesta. El deseo de mostrar la belleza está presente en la Flor de la vida que Lucía Madriz de Costa Rica diseñó con piedras y semillas en el piso de la Iglesia San Francisco. Pero más allá de los aspectos

anxiety that is derived from searching as a constant adventure.

“We will be well-advised if we understand the future through the vision of artists,” Hug declares.

By reproducing the whimsical forms of the margins of the Uruguay River in paraffin, a white and unstable material, Marcelo Moscheta’s installation may represent an answer. The wish to show beauty is present in Flor de la vida (The Flower of Life), designed by Lucía Madriz de Costa using stones and seeds and featured on the floor of the church of San Francisco. But beyond the sensory aspects, the curatorial text adopts a marked political stance, and Hug raises a vindicating voice when he asserts: “From the Eurocentric perspective, the chronology in the Western Hemisphere begins only in 1507, when the name ‘America’ appears for the first time in a globe designed by Martin Waldseemüller. […] In the face of this large-scale annihilation of a history and a past, it is no wonder that in South America the future, too, should have been postponed once and again.”

The Montevideo Biennial attempts to recover the memory of the past, and the best example is the sound installation Voces indígenas (Indigenous Voices). The indigenous languages of Latin America are heard once again as a rich linguistic heritage. The Biennial, however, looks ahead and avoids the old uniform gaze of the North; far from showing Latin America as the kingdom of poverty, typicality and victimization, it rather exhibits its splendor. The sole idea of imagining the 500 Years of Future from that point of view, so common at present, is unbearable.

The members of the Montevideo Biennial Foundation, princess Laetitia D´Arenberg, Jorge Srur, Ricardo Murara and Graciela Rompani believe that the knowledge of art may improve and enrich people’s lives. For this reason they have placed the emphasis on an intense educational program and on conducted tours which, like admission to the Biennial, are free.

sensibles, el texto curatorial toma una marcada posición política y Hug eleva una voz reivindicatoria, cuando sostiene: “Desde la perspectiva eurocéntrica, la cronología en el hemisferio occidental comienza recién en 1507, cuando el nombre “América” aparece por primera vez en un mapamundi de Martin Waldseemüller. […]Ante esta aniquilación a gran escala de una historia y un pasado, no es de extrañar que en Sudamérica también el futuro haya tenido que aplazarse una y otra vez”.

La Bienal de Montevideo trata de recuperar la memoria del pasado y el mejor ejemplo es instalación sonora Voces indígenas.

Las lenguas indígenas de América Latina se vuelven a escuchar como un rico legado lingüístico. No obstante, la Bienal mira hacia adelante y escapa a la consabida mirada uniforme del Norte, lejos de mostrar a Latinoamérica como el reino de la pobreza, la tipicidad y la victimización, exhibe más bien su esplendor. La sola idea de imaginar los 500 Años de Futuro desde ese punto de vista tan común en la actualidad, resulta insoportable.

Los miembros de la Fundación Bienal de Montevideo, la princesa Laetitia D´Arenberg, Jorge Srur, Ricardo Murara yGraciela Rompani, creen que el conocimiento del arte puede favorecer y enriquecer la vida de las personas. Por esta razón han puesto el acento en un intenso programa educativo y en las visitas guiadas que, al igual que el ingreso a la Bienal, son gratuitas.

EDUARDO COSTA LIFE AS A WORK OF ART LA VIDA COMO OBRA DE ARTE

he exhibition Moda ficción, naturaleza, joyas y bicicletas (Fashion Fiction, Nature, Jewels and Bicycles) at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires pushed Eduardo Costa’s (1940) trajectory into the limelight. The artist’s ability to translate his ideas into works, words, fashion and the mass media transformed him into a poet, a lyrics writer for the rock band Virus, an editor, a designer of jewels and bicycles, and a conceptual artist from the very beginning of the movement.

Costa played leading roles in theaters in Buenos Aires, New York and Rio de Janeiro. In the 1960s, Argentina was integrated into the global scene. Costa lived in New York City when Bonino opened a branch of the gallery, Leo Castelli arrived in Buenos Aires with Andy Warhol to exhibit his works, and the directors of the New York MoMA and Guggenheim museums were members of the juries of the Di Tella Institute and the Kaiser Industries Biennial’s awards.

At the MAMBA, some dummies evoke the glorious parade “The Fashion Show Poetry Event” held in New York City by Costa together with the poets John Perreault and Hannah Weiner.

Costa’s instructions to the participating artists (Warhol, Alex Katz, Juan Stoppani, James Rosenquist, Roberto Plate, Claes Oldenburg, Alfredo Rodríguez Arias, Marisol Escobar and others) was that they should join in “a process of collaborative creation” of a poem translated into the language of fashion.

The critic Alexander Alberro narrates that Susana Salgado designed a wedding dress and covered the head of the model completely. He adds that the poem alluded to “the industry of selling a wedding as a personal fantasy”. During those years Costa designed bracelets that resembled tree barks, huge rings looking like branches, and brooches with real wings of blue butterflies; he replicated in pure gold human ears and fingers and the processions of ants, and he gave to his works the status of jewels. But fashion pursued an end: it was the Trojan horse to introduce his Fashion Fictions, which became a hit of the mass media. His works appeared in Vogue, Glamour or Harper’s Bazaar magazines, but also in the Village Voice, the Buenos Aires publication Primera Plana, and non-specialized media. Even the brilliant Richard Avedon photographed those designs.

The exhibition at the MAMBA documents an extensive and varied production. Also in collaboration with Perreault, Costa created the Tape Poems, an audio tape cassette featuring recorded poetry

Costa vivía en NYC cuando Bonino abrió una sucursal de la galería, Leo Castelli llegó a Buenos Aires con Andy Warhol a exhibir sus obras y los directores del MoMA y el Guggenheim neoyorquinos integraban jurados de los premios del Instituto Di Tella y la Bienal de las Industrias Kaiser.

En el MAMBA se divisan unos maniquíes, evocan el glorioso desfile The Fashion Show Poetry Event, realizado en NYC por Costa junto con los poetas John Perreault y Hannah Weiner.

La consigna de Costa a los artistas participantes (Warhol, Alex Katz, Juan Stoppani, James Rosenquist, Roberto Plate, Claes Oldenburg, Alfredo Rodríguez Arias, Marisol Escobar y otros) era unirse a “un proceso de creación en colaboración” de un poema traducido al lenguaje de la moda. El crítico Alexander Alberro cuenta que Susana Salgado diseñó un vestido de novia y cubrió por completo la cabeza de la modelo. Agrega que el poema hablaba de “la industria de vender la boda como una fantasía personal”.

En esos años Costa diseñó brazaletes que semejan cortezas de árboles, enormes anillos como ramas y broches con alas reales de mariposas azules; replicó en oro puro las orejas y dedos humanos y los desfiles de las hormigas, y le brindó a sus obras el estatus de una joya. Pero la moda perseguía un fin: fue el caballo de Troya de sus “Fashion Fictions”, que se convirtieron en un hit de los mass media. Su obra apareció en las revistas Vogue, Glamour o Harper’s Bazaar, pero también en el Village Voice, la porteña Primera Plana y medios no especializados. Hasta el genial Richard Avedon fotografió estos diseños.

La exhibición del MAMBA documenta una extensa y variada producción. También junto a Perreault nuestro artista realizó los “Tape Poems”: cintas de audio con poesía grabada, sólo para ser escuchada. Costa fue un precursor del trabajo en colaboración, realizó obras junto a Lygia Pape, Carolina Herrera, Ana Mendieta, Hélio Oiticica, Manuel Puig, Lucy Lippard, Federico Moura, Octavio Paz y muchos más.

Hace unos días, Patrick Greaney, especialista en Literaturas Comparadas y crítico de arte (Universidad de Colorado en Boulder), estuvo en Buenos Aires recopilando material para su libro sobre la parte literaria de la obra de Costa. En los

just meant to be heard. The artist was a pioneer of collaborative practice; he executed works together with Lygia Pape, Carolina Herrera, Ana Mendieta, Hélio Oiticica, Manuel Puig, Lucy Lippard, Federico Moura, Octavio Paz and many others.

Some time ago, Patrick Greaney, a specialist in Comparative Literature and art critic (University of Colorado at Boulder) visited Buenos Aires to compile material for his book on the literary part of Costa’s work. In the artist’s archives, Greaney found a letter from Teeny Duchamp, then Marcel’s wife, in which she writes some observations on her husband’s work. The letter was dated 1975, and Costa notes: “She was in her house in France, where I had rung her up. Teeny answers something we had talked very little about on the telephone. The short letter confirms that Marcel had introduced some changes in the bathtub, where he had placed some wall tiles he himself had taken to New York from Mexico.”

In 1977, Costa participated in Buenos Aires in a tribute to Duchamp presented by Arte Nuevo gallery, and he featured his Duchamp/Costa bicycle wheel. He changed the bicycle spokes in the French artist’s readymade for the Duchampian spiral, a symbol of constant movement. There they are, lined up in the exhibition room, the formidable Duchamp/Costa bicycles produced in Brazil. In this way, Duchamp’s readymade became a serial, utilitarian object with one virtue: the double iron spiral is a powerful shock absorber and it improves suspension.

The artist has imposed his presence on the powerful conceptual production he has created up to the present. A new art based on the possibilities offered by pictorial impasto emerged. Paint in a solid state willingly adopts in his hands forms of an unusual relief. Parodying still-lifes and portraits, Costa gives volume to the classical themes of painting, which, freed from the support

En 1977 Costa participó en Buenos Aires de un homenaje a Duchamp que realizó la galería Arte Nuevo y presentó su “Duchamp/Costa rueda de bicicleta”. Al ready made del francés, “Rueda de bicicleta”, Costa le cambió los rayos por la espiral duchampiana, símbolo del movimiento constante. Allí están, alineadas en la sala, las formidables Bicicleta Duchamp/ Costa realizadas en Brasil. De este modo, el ready made de Duchamp derivó en un objeto seriado y utilitario, con una virtud: la doble espiral de hierro es un poderoso amortiguador y favorece la suspensión.

En la poderosa producción conceptual que el artista realiza hasta el presente, impone su presencia. Un nuevo arte surgió a partir de las posibilidades que ofrece el empaste pictórico.

La pintura en estado sólido se aviene en sus manos a adoptar formas de un inusitado relieve. of the canvas, the wooden panel or the wall, rise – superb – on a pedestal.

Volumetric paintings emerged when exploring the boundaries of matter with an experimental aim. “Already 20 years ago I wanted to rescue painting from the structural boredom in which it was immersed and I thought of Lucio Fontana and the Madí, who renewed the world of painting by dint of depth and meaning.” Costa then gives another twist to painting; he discovered that it could cease to be the rendering of a vase and acquire the real volume of things.”

In order to build a fruit, he accumulates layer upon layer, color upon color; paint from the inside to the outside. First he gives shape to the pits: then he adds the flesh and finally the skin.

The exact reproduction of the original is not hyperrealist: it is conceptual. A transversal cross-section of the fruit shows the interior of things.

In a memorable performance, the artist cracked an ostrich egg made of acrylic paint; he spilt on a plate the transparent and jelly-like white that surrounded the yoke, which solidified on entering into contact with the air.

Although in truth, his most expressive visual representation and, perhaps, his most intense work is the head of the poet Carter Ratcliff. The hair emerges from the skull loaded with phrases, and the viewer guesses that Costa, through his habitual procedure, has modelled the brain, an area related to knowledge and intelligence.

muro, y se levanta soberbia sobre un pedestal.

Las pinturas volumétricas surgieron al explorar los límites de la materia con un afán experimental. “Hace ya 20 años quería rescatar la pintura del aburrimiento estructural en que se encontraba y pensé en Lucio Fontana y los Madí que renovaron el mundo pictórico a fuerza de profundidad y de sentido”. Costa le pegó entonces a la pintura una vuelta de tuerca, descubrió que podía dejar de ser la representación de un florero y adquirir el volumen real de las cosas. Para construir un fruto acumula capa sobre capa, color sobre color, la pintura desde adentro hacia fuera. Primero le brinda forma a los carozos, después agrega la pulpa y finalmente la cáscara. La reproducción exacta del original no es hiperrealista: es conceptual. Un corte transversal del fruto muestra el interior de las cosas.

En una memorable performance el artista rompió un huevo de avestruz realizado con pintura acrílica, derramó sobre un plato la clara de transparente y gelatinosa que rodeaba la yema y, que, al entrar en contacto con el aire, se solidificó.

Aunque, en verdad, la más expresiva representación visual y, acaso, la obra más intensa, es la cabeza del poeta Carter Ratcliff.

El pelo brota del cráneo cargado de frases y el espectador adivina que Costa, con el procedimiento habitual, ha modelado el cerebro, área relacionada con el conocimiento y la inteligencia.

ince his emergence in the visual arts scene, the photographer Roberto Huarcaya (Lima, 1959) has distinguished himself by the ambition of his projects, in which photography has often been associated with other creative mediums in very solid combinations that have elicited intense responses from different audiences. His proposals have frequently revolved strongly around the construction of an individual and a collective identity in face of situations ranging from the banal-everyday, through the erotic as a turning point in relation to freedom, finally to reach the political, that is, that which being pertinent to the development of responsibilities, rights and obligations of individuals within a society requires attention, consideration and discussion in order to clarify the ideal of the common good.

In recent times, Huarcaya’s projects have turned towards questionings regarding photography, but without distorting the support of the image; rather, he has attracted the viewer’s attention towards its configuration. The way in which the artist manages to make the role of the witness (the committed gaze) intertwine with the role of the anthropological observer (the gaze that pays attention to the developments and textures of a human situation safeguarding its integrity) is really striking. These recent proposals by the artist have resorted, for example, to cameras traditionally indicated for a work that is clear and categorical in its presentation, but that slows down and dwells on the hidden details and progresses towards its culmination without announcing any conclusions.

Focused on Peruvian society, Huarcaya’s gaze in recent works such as Playa Privada/Playa Pública or Pamplona/Casuarinas is so candid that one might wonder how he eludes producing a pamphlet. The answer lies in the distance that he keeps between himself and the subject to be photographed, and indeed, Huarcaya the individual- photographer-citizen, recognizes in himself the potential of a gaze positioned at an evidently not

esde su aparición en la escena de las artes visuales, el fotógrafo Roberto Huarcaya (Lima, 1959), destacó por la ambición de sus proyectos, en los que a menudo el medio fotográfico se ha visto unido a otros medios de creación en combinaciones de gran solvencia que han despertado respuestas intensas de distintos públicos. Sus propuestas con frecuencia han girado potentemente en torno a la construcción de la identidad individual y colectiva de cara a situaciones que van desde lo banal-cotidiano, pasando por lo erótico como punto de inflexión de la libertad, hasta alcanzar lo político, es decir, aquello que por ser pertinente al desenvolvimiento de responsabilidades, derechos y obligaciones de los individuos en la vida en sociedad requiere atención, consideración y discusión en aras de esclarecer el ideal del bien común.

En tiempos recientes los proyectos de Huarcaya han enrumbado hacia cuestionamientos de lo fotográfico pero sin violentar el soporte mismo de la imagen, sino más bien atrayendo la atención del público hacia la configuración de la misma.

Llama poderosamente la atención cómo el artista logra que se entrecrucen el rol de testigo (la mirada comprometida) con el de observador antropológico (la mirada atenta al desarrollo y texturas de una situación humana salvaguardando su integridad). Estas propuestas recientes del artista se han valido, por ejemplo, de las cámaras clásicamente indicadas para un trabajo que es claro y tajante en la presentación, pero que en los entresijos se ralentiza y avanza hacia su término sin anuncio de conclusiones.

En dirección a la sociedad peruana, la mirada de Huarcaya en obras recientes como Playa Privada/Playa Pública o Pamplona/ Casuarinas es tan franca que uno puede preguntarse cómo es que 87

quantifiable, but indeed verifiable distance, inside a society marked by discrimination in different aspects. In a somewhat similar way as the analysis that Aldous Huxley made of El Greco and his characters, Huarcaya seems to become invisible in the environment without, however, being totally swallowed by an opacity that might erase his photographic trace in response to a critical life experience. What he does in order to assume the questioning position is to adopt a nuclear place in the fabric of society, inside that social organism that regulates, and above all, excludes, in a brutal way.

The artist’s most recent photographic work seems to take a different course, but – as will become evident – this is only apparent. We are referring to an installation of unprecedented dimensions in his body of work covering 25 years. Presented at the Casa Rímac in Lima’s historic district, coinciding with the exhibition of a selection from the Jan Mulder Collection, also temporarily housed in the same venue on account of the presentation of LimaPhoto 2014, his installation Amazogramas – 90 metros de Bahuaja Sonene is the most concrete attention call he has featured to date.

Huarcaya has always been interested in reality as a space for creation and very often he has engaged in pursuing the definition of visual devices that might transform its reading and make it possible to experiment openly and critically with the generation of signs and symbols. The poetic narrative in photographic sequences was a way of exploring that territory, as were the photographic reconstructions of chosen works from the history of Western painting.

For the production of the Amazogramas, he has focused his attention on camera-less photography, and he is creating “photograms”. “Photograms” are images obtained through a process that dispenses with the photographic camera and its lenses, and in which the paper with the photosensitive emulsion acts as a witness to everything that comes into contact with it, capturing its trace in direct relation to its physical presence

La respuesta está en la distancia que guarda con el asunto a fotografiar y, ciertamente, el sujeto Huarcaya fotógrafo-ciudadano reconoce en sí mismo el potencial de una mirada posicionada a una distancia evidentemente no cuantificable pero verificable, al interior de una sociedad marcada por la discriminación en varios órdenes de cosas. Un poco como en el análisis que Aldous Huxley hacía de El Greco y sus personajes, Huarcaya parece invisibilizarse en el entorno sin ser del todo deglutido por una opacidad que podría borrar su rastro fotográfico en respuesta a una vivencia crítica. Lo que hace para asumir la ubicación cuestionadora, es tomar un lugar nuclear en el entramado, dentro de aquel organismo social que regula y, por sobre todo, excluye brutalmente.

La obra fotográfica más reciente del artista pareciera tomar un rumbo distinto, pero solo aparentemente, como quedará evidenciado. Se trata de una instalación de dimensiones sin precedentes en su cuerpo de trabajo de 25 años. Presentada en la Casa Rímac del Centro histórico de Lima, en paralelo a la exposición de una selección de la Colección de Jan Mulder, también alojada temporalmente en el mismo local con motivo de LimaPhoto 2014, su instalación Amazogramas – 90 metros de Bahuaja Sonene es el señalamiento más concreto que ha hecho hasta el día de hoy.

A Huarcaya siempre le ha interesado lo real como espacio de creación y muy frecuentemente se ha lanzado a perseguir la definición de dispositivos visuales que transformaran su lectura y permitieran experimentar abierta y críticamente con la generación de signos y símbolos. La narrativa poética en secuencias fotográficas fue una manera de explorar este terreno.

The historical avant-garde of early 20th century European art resorted to photograms as a radical way out from what was perceived as a complete crisis in representational art. Roberto Huarcaya resorts to them in order to point at an acute-phase crisis in a territory that is, in turn, in an absolutely critical situation in terms of what we insist on terming “national reality”. Once again, Huarcaya chooses to take a distance (paradoxically, in spite of the contact between the parts that photograms demand).

He has produced three photograms for which he has utilized three whole photographic paper webs. In nocturnal actions with the proportions of an independent film production (one cannot but recall the comparable ambition of the Peruvian avant-garde photographers Carlos and Miguel Vargas and

La vanguardia histórica en el arte europeo de inicios del siglo XX se valió del fotograma como una salida radical de lo que se percibía como una crisis completa de la representación. Roberto Huarcaya se vale de él para hacer un señalamiento de una crisis en fase aguda en un territorio que se halla en situación absolutamente crítica dentro de lo que insistimos en llamar “realidad nacional”. Una vez más, Huarcaya elige tomar distancia (pese, paradójicamente, al contacto entre las partes que exige el fotograma).

their photographic Nocturnos, produced almost 100 years ago), he has deployed the paper, introducing it between the trees in sections of the Amazonian rainforest, in the national reserve of Bahuaja Sonene, and lighting it with a manual flash, aided by the moonlight, he has slowly and patiently generated a direct visual impression, a literal testimony of the plant species of the Amazonian region, on the surface of the support.

More than the simple direct recovery of the trace of 90 linear meters of Amazonian rainforest on the horizontal and vertical axes (one of the photograms features an entire tree, lit by storm thunder), the three Amazogramas trigger sudden perceptions and reflections. We sense what emerges from the visual records in these monumental dimensions, because they elicit in us urgent needs to elaborate other discourses when faced with the deployment of this phantasmagoria, which is, undoubtedly, really there – by way of the singular nature of the photogram– but which appears intangible, nonetheless. Not only because of the spectral impact that these colorless strips of “rainforest” may have, but because, through a mixture of intuition and resonance, Huarcaya allows us, in these works, to resume sensitivity, which is like a palimpsest of our personal history, an agitated sensory dynamics, in the camera of our conscience. To expose this is a political act.

The exhibition will be featured at the Daegu Photo Biennale 2014 in Korea through September and October, 2014.

Lo que ha hecho es realizar tres fotogramas para los que ha utilizado el íntegro de tres bobinas de papel fotográfico. En acciones nocturnas con proporciones de producción de cine independiente (no puede uno dejar de pensar en la ambición comparable de los vanguardistas peruanos Carlos y Miguel Vargas y sus Nocturnos fotográficos, hace casi 100 años), desplegó el papel, introduciéndolo entre los árboles en secciones del bosque tropical amazónico en la reserva nacional de Bahuaja Sonene, e iluminándolo con flash de mano, al que se sumó la luz de luna, lenta y pacientemente generó la huella visual directa, testimonio literal de especies vegetales de la Amazonía en la superficie del soporte.

Más que la simple recuperación directa de la huella de 90 metros lineales del bosque tropical amazónico en los ejes horizontal y vertical (uno de los fotogramas es de un árbol entero, iluminado por relámpagos en una tormenta), los tres Amazogramas son detonantes de percepciones y reflexiones súbitas. Presentimos lo que emerge de lo visual volcado a estas dimensiones monumentales, porque en nosotros se suscitan necesidades urgentes de elaborar otros discursos ante el desenvolvimiento de esta fantasmagoría, que está fuera de dudas –por la singular naturaleza del fotograma-, pero que aun así aparece como intangible. No solo por el impacto espectral que puedan tener estos jirones de “selva” sin color, sino porque, con una mezcla de intuición y resonancia, Huarcaya en estas obras nos permite re-anudar la sensibilidad, que es como un palimpsesto de nuestra historia personal, a una dinámica sensorial agitada, en la cámara de la consciencia. Exponerlos es un acto político.

La exposición estará en la Bienal de Corea de Daegu Photo Biennale 2014 durante setiembre y octubre de este año.

Figures and Names “ 1400 artists exhibited, 150 in France and 82 abroad, 1300 works in the permanent collection. That is what 30 years of the Fondation Cartier represent”, Alain Dominique Perrin, president of the Fondation, points out in his speech on the opening day of the exhibition Vivid Memories, which celebrates the mentioned institution’s anniversary. Immediately after this enumeration of facts, he insists on reminding us of the full name of the institution, highlighting its mission and origin: Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. “It is not only its name, but also its commitment”. And thanking at the same time the French artist César, for without him, the concept of the Fondation would not have seen the light.

Founded in Paris in the mid­19th century, the Cartier Society, as it is known, is a company in the luxury goods sector that designs, manufactures and sells jewelry and watches. Unlike other French foundations, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain is proud of being the only foundation that clearly separates any business activities from those of the foundation itself. In other words, Cartier does not request any artist to create marketable products. And that determination has been very clear to them since the creation of the Fondation, the first in the history of France1.

Ten months of festivities to commemorate the anniversary To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Fondation Cartier offered to the public, until the end of September, the best selection of works from its collection. Vivid Memories was an exhibition in constant movement. The works were rotated; every month, visitors could see new works ranging from pieces by Nan Goldin to works by Raymond Depardon o Issey Miyake. There were performances, concerts, seminars, and so on. Eso es lo que representan los 30 años de la Fundación Cartier”, señala Alain Dominique Perrin, presidente de la Fundación, en su discurso el día de la inauguración de la exposición Memorias Vivas, que celebra el aniversario de dicha institución. Apenas concluida la enumeración, insiste en recordarnos el nombre completo de la Fundación, subrayando su misión y su origen: la Fundación Cartier para el arte contemporáneo, “no sólo es su nombre sino también su compromiso.” Agradeciendo de paso al artista francés César: pues, sin él el concepto de la fundación no hubiera visto la luz.

Fundada en París a mediados del siglo XIX, la sociedad Cartier, como es conocido, es una empresa del sector de lujo que concibe, fabrica y vende joyas y relojes. La Fundación Cartier para el arte contemporáneo, a diferencia de las otras fundaciones francesas, se enorgullece de ser la única en separar claramente su actividad empresarial de la de la fundación. En otras palabras, ningún artista es solicitado por Cartier para realizar productos comercializables. Y esa voluntad la tienen muy clara desde la creación de la Fundación, la primera en la historia de Francia1.

very varied and encouraging. The exhibition gathered together the community of artists with which the Fondation Cartier has built and continues to create its history, highlighting the strong bonds it maintains with artists.

Its History It is narrated to us by Hervé Chandès – the director of the Fondation for the past 20 years – from that tall and transparent laboratory of ideas between heaven and earth that is his office, located on the top floor of the building designed by Nouvel.

The first venue occupied a very large and beautiful space in the outskirts of Paris, in Jouy-en-Josas, he points out. There were numerous artists’ workshops, residency programs, without any obligation of obtaining specific results. Several exhibitions were organized. It was also a space for meetings. The Fondation permanently hosted five or six artists from all over the world, among them, Fabrice Hybert, Othoniel, Chéri Samba, and Quai Guo-Quiang. We were also visited by art critics like Hans Ulrich Obricht or Nancy Spector. In 1993, we left Jouy-en-Josas to settle in the heart of Paris, 261, Boulevard Raspail, in a 1,000 squaremeter building especially designed by the monumental Jean Nouvel. In the words of the foundation’s president, Alain Perrin: “The architect enveloped the Fondation in an image of beauty, transparency, and visual and artistic perfection, transforming it into a Parisian monument, indelible and eternal.”

movimiento permanente. Las obras se van turnando: se pueden ver obras nuevas todos los meses. Desde Nan Goldin, pasando por Raymond Depardon o Issey Miyake. Hay performances, conciertos, encuentros, etc. El programa es muy variado y alentador. La exposición reúne a la comunidad de artistas con la que la Fundación Cartier construyó y sigue creando su historia, poniendo de relieve la fuerte vinculación que existe entre los artistas y ella.

Su historia Nos es relatada por Hervé Chandès – el director de la Fundación, que ocupa ese puesto desde hace 20 años – desde ese laboratorio de ideas, alto y transparente, entre cielo y tierra, que es su oficina situada en el último piso del edificio diseñado por Nouvel. La primera sede ocupó un espacio grandísimo y precioso en las afueras de Paris, en Jouy-en-Josas, señala.

Había muchos talleres de artistas, programas de residencias, sin obligación ninguna de resultados. Se organizaron varias exposiciones. Era también un espacio de encuentros. Había, de manera permanente, cinco o seis artistas del mundo entero.

En 1993, dejamos Jouyen-Josas para instalarnos en el corazón de Paris, 261, Boulevard Raspail, en un edificio de unos 1000 metros cuadrados concebido con ese propósito específico por el monumental Jean Nouvel. En palabras del entonces presidente de la Fundación, Alain Dominique Perrin: “El arquitecto envolvió a la fundación en una imagen de belleza, de transparencia y de perfección visual y artística. Convirtiéndolo en un monumento parisino, indeleble y eterno”.

Desde que se fundó, en 1984, la Fundación sostiene a la creación y a los artistas, financiando pedidos especiales a estos últimos. Y “si ya no hay talleres en la nueva sede parisina, es que no había deseos de hacerlo. Los talleres fueron

The workshops were replaced by an increase in commissions from artists, and sometimes a whole exhibition is the commission. Here we only buy what we show”.

The game is to exhibit rock’n’roll, and the next day popular art The bases and principles that have ruled the organization until now were developed from the very beginning. They include a cross-cutting approach and an international dimension.

Immediately after the creation of the foundation, design imposed itself through the work of Philippe Starck, Pascal Mourgue, Elizabeth Garouste, Matias Bonetti, Nestor Perkal and many others. At that time, Chandès insists, “it was not very fortunate to incorporate design in a contemporary art space, and this was confirmed by the press”. It was new and innovative.

Then the devil came into the house with Ferrari’s exhibition.

As in cascade mode, Chandès continues to illustrate the crosscutting approach in question and the heteroclite nature of the foundation’s historical programming: an exhibition on speed was organized twenty-five years ago; the space hosted the fashion designers André Courrèges and Jean-Paul Gaultier, who transformed the foundation’s exhibition space into…a bakery, no less! Cinema became installed in the exhibition halls via the work of Agnès Varda or David Lynch. At that moment, a wholly new relationship between the filmed space and the exhibition space was invented. There were no exhibitions

En aquella época, insiste Chandès, “era poco afortunado integrar el diseño en un espacio de arte contemporáneo, y lo confirmó la prensa”. Era nuevo e innovador. Luego, el diablo entró en casa, al exponer Ferrari A modo de cascada, Chandès sigue ilustrando la transversalidad en cuestión y el carácter heteróclito de su programación histórica: se armó una exposición sobre la velocidad hace 25 años, ocuparon el espacio los diseñadores de moda André Courrèges y Jean-Paul Gaultier, quien convirtió el espacio de la fundación ¡nada menos que en una panadería! El cine se instala con Agnès Varda o David Lynch en las salas de exposiciones. En ese momento, se inventa una relación inédita entre el espacio filmado y el espacio de muestra. on science; rather, there were exhibitions with scientists (Mathematics, 2011). Performing arts and performances also had an important role, as did photography, video, folk art, comics, etc. Music has also occupied a very special place: suffice it to mention the famous concert by the Blue Velvet.

The program of Vivid Memories, which included artists from around the world, gave evidence of the importance assigned to the international dimension, which became consolidated as a fundamental axis from the beginning, since the days of Jouy-enJosas, as demonstrated by the presence of Chinese artists. Quite unusual at that time.

The preceding exhibition, for instance, had focused its gaze on the photographic production of the Latin American continent.

Hervé Chandès explained to us how the idea behind the exhibition América Latina, 1960-2013, Fotografías (Latin America 1960-2013. Photography) had originated: ”Well, it’s very simple.

I have been visiting Latin America for years, especially Brazil, sometimes Argentina, and less frequently, Chile. I met people, I attended exhibitions, I consulted books, and with time, I realized there was a world of photography there that we ignored. And besides, photography is currently a rising trend. Then one day, we simply reached the decision of organizing this exhibition together with the Museo Amparo.”

“Our interest in Latin America originates, on the one hand, in our curiosity regarding what is foreign. We have always been concerned with not remaining confined to Europe. It is a sort of survival instinct. On the other hand, since 1985, Gilberto Châteaubriand, a great Brazilian collector, has been a member of the Foundation’s Collection Committee. With him I discovered Latin America for the first time. Thanks to him I understood how extraordinary that culture was; he was the one who familiarized me with all the artists, from Waltercio Caldas to Ernesto Neto; from Adriana Varejão to Beatriz Milhazes or Brazilian folk art; we trod a path together through which our

El programa de Memorias vivas, que incluye a artistas del mundo entero, evidencia la importancia que se otorga a la dimensión internacional, que se consolidó como eje fundamental desde el inicio; desde Jouy-en-Josas, como lo demuestra la presencia de artistas chinos. Nada obvio en esa época.

La exposición anterior, por ejemplo, centró su mirada en la producción fotográfica del continente latinoamericano. Hervé Chandès nos refirió cómo surgió la idea de la exposición América latina, 1960-2013, Fotografías: “Pues, es muy simple. Viajo a América Latina desde hace años. Sobre todo a Brasil, algunas veces a Argentina y un poco a Chile. Conozco a gente, visito exposiciones, consulto libros, y, con el tiempo, me doy cuenta de que hay un mundo de la fotografía allí que ignoramos aquí. Ademàs de que es también una tendencia actual. Así, un buen día, simplemente tomamos la decisión de organizar esta exposición con el Museo Amparo”.

“Nuestro interés en América Latina viene, por un lado, de nuestra curiosidad por lo foráneo. Siempre hemos tenido la inquietud de no permanecer confinados a Europa. Es una suerte de instinto de supervivencia. Por otra parte, desde 1985 contamos, en el comité de la colección de la Fundación, con la presencia de Gilberto Châteaubriand, gran coleccionista

interest in that wonderful region was forged”.

Currently, the director tells us, the Foundation’s collection includes works by Adriana Varejão, mainly linked to the two exhibitions she has presented at the Foundation, an individual one, and one with the Yanomami Indians. Works by Guillermo Kuitka, or by Alair Gómez – pieces of Paraguayan folk art – unknown to most people, are also part of the collection.

“We always try to find our position; we try to see what our neighbor is doing so that we can do something different. We always have that concern in mind: to do something which has never been done. We would never have organized the exhibition on Latin American photography if it had been done before. Because staging an exhibition implies a commitment; a commitment with something you yourself have discovered. It’s not about saying ‘we have finished with Brazil, let’s go visit Australia’.

No; we are not predators; it’s not the style of this house”.

The idea is that the perspective for the future of the Cartier Foundation remain the same: to continue maintaining privileged relationships with the artists: to continue fostering exchanges, looking outward and giving rise to prolific encounters with innovative exhibitions.

A single piece of advice: continue along the same path!

Una personal y otra con la etnia Yanomami. Los trabajos de Guillermo Kuitca o de Alair Gómez, obras del arte popular paraguayo, desconocidas para la mayoría, son también parte de la colección.

“Intentamos siempre encontrar nuestra ubicación, intentamos ver lo que hace el vecino para hacer algo distinto. Siempre tenemos presente esa inquietud: hacer algo que no se hizo. Nunca hubiéramos organizado la exposición sobre las fotos de América Latina si se hubiera visto ya antes. Porque hacer una exposición es comprometerse, comprometerse en algo que uno mismo descubre. No se trata de decir “hemos concluido Brasil, vamos a visitar Australia. No, no somos depredadores, no es el estilo de esta casa”. La perspectiva para el futuro de la Fundación Cartier intenta ser la misma: Seguir manteniendo relaciones privilegiadas con los artistas, seguir nutriendo intercambios, seguir mirando hacia afuera y provocar encuentros prolíficos con exposiciones innovadoras.

Un solo consejo: ¡continúen por esa senda!

Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) Valencia As a celebration of its 25 years of existence, the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) explores a part of the creation of Latin America through 127 works of its collection, under the special influence of Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres-García.

Torres-García’s first years in Spain were a time of Neoclassical training in Barcelona (where he was even a temporary collaborator of Gaudí); he later became a renowned representative of Catalan Noucentisme, characterized by an allegorical realism which, at the turn of the century, is opposed to Modernism. After living in New York, Italy and Villafranche-sur-Mer between 1926 y 1932, while Fauvism, Cubism, and Mondrian and Arp and Helion’s geometric abstraction were booming, in 1926 he settled in Paris.

After a successful exhibition, he met Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian. His art began to undergo decisive changes and he started working on constructivist structures and incorporating sign languages. On Torres-García’s initiative, in 1929 the “Cercle et Carré” (Circle and Square) Group and Magazine were created.

In his essay “Vouloir construire”, he mentions the concepts of reason and construction as essential elements of a universal art, in which the painting is at the same time a part and a symbol of a superior unit.

Torres-García wanted to make constructivism an American art, through the use in his works of signs inspired in the ancient American cultures, transformed into elaborate elements. “I was searching for a new art, an American, avant-garde art, with order, in which geometry emerges from the inner structure of the painting”.

Torres-García’s palette is fundamentally made up of primary colors, like red, blue, yellow, as well as white and black, in which the influence of his Dutch friends becomes manifest.

The realization of Torres-García’s universal proposal required a new art that would incorporate the philosophical and aesthetic ideas of constructivism, yet including the archetypes of PreHispanic cultures. It is a synthesis between the modern and the pre-historic. It attempts to resume the essential aspects of constructivist art and American pre-Columbian arts, such as the sense of universality, the geometrization of forms, the sustained rhythms of the stone walls, the harmonic integration that exists between monuments and their surroundings. It aims at the realization of a monumental contemporary art associated to architecture, the greatest expression of the constructive approach, a nucleus of expressive possibilities that find themselves limited by the use of the easel.

In 1939 he published his essay “Metafísica de la prehistoria indoamericana”, in which he attempts to link the abstract tradition of pre-Columbian art to modern art. After the publication of “Historia de mi vida”, in 1944 he published

Tras residir en Nueva York, Italia y Villafranchesur-Mer entre 1926 y 1932, en pleno fauvismo, cubismo, y la abstracción geométrica de Mondrian, Arp y Hélion, se instala, a partir de 1926 en París. Después de una exposición exitosa, conoce a Theo van Doesburg y a Piet Mondrian. Su arte comienza a experimentar cambios decisivos trabajando sobre estructuras constructivistas e incorporando lenguajes de signos.

Por iniciativa de Torres-García, se crearon, en 1929, el Grupo y la Revista “Cercle et Carré” (Círculo y Cuadrado).

En su ensayo “Vouloir construire” menciona como puntos esenciales los conceptos de la razón y la construcción para un arte del orden universal, en el cual el cuadro, al mismo tiempo forma parte y es símbolo de una unidad superior.

Torres-García quería hacer con el constructivismo un arte americano, con el empleo en sus obras de signos inspirados en las culturas antiguas americanas, convertidos en elementos elaborados. “Buscaba un arte nuevo, americano, de vanguardia, con orden, donde la geometría surge de la estructura interior del cuadro”. La paleta de Torres-García está compuesta fundamentalmente por colores primarios, como rojo, azul, amarillo, así como blanco y negro, donde se manifiesta la influencia de sus amigos holandeses.

La concreción de la propuesta universalista de Torres-García requiere un nuevo arte que incorpore ideas filosóficas y estéticas del constructivismo, pero dando lugar a los arquetipos de las culturas prehispánicas. Se trata de una síntesis de lo moderno y lo prehistórico. Se busca retomar los aspectos esenciales del arte constructivo y las artes americanas precolombinas, como el sentido de universalidad, la geometrización de las formas, los ritmos sostenidos de los paramentos de piedras, la integración armónica que existe entre monumentos y medio circundante.

Apunta a la realización de un arte monumental contemporáneo asociado con la arquitectura, la mayor expresión del ordenamiento constructivo, un núcleo de posibilidades expresivas que se ven limitadas por el uso del caballete.

En 1939 publica su ensayo “Metafísica de la prehistoria indoamericana”, donde intenta vincular la tradición abstracta del arte precolombino con el arte moderno. Después de “Historia de mi vida” sale, en 1944, “Universalismo Constructivo” donde resume sus ideas sobre el arte plástico: “No puede existir para mí convicción mayor que ésta: primero la estructura, después la geometría, luego el signo, finalmente el espíritu, y siempre la geometría” (Universalismo Constructivo, 1944, pág.119).

“He dicho Escuela del Sur; porque en realidad, nuestro norte es el Sur. No debe haber norte, para nosotros, sino por oposición a nuestro Sur. Por eso ahora ponemos el mapa al revés, y entonces ya tenemos justa idea de nuestra posición, y no como quieren en el resto del mundo. La punta de América, desde ahora, prolongándose, señala insistentemente el Sur, nuestro norte.”

Invirtió el mapa de América del Sur como modo de anunciar el final del período colonial del arte de la América Latina y el comienzo de una nueva era artística. ¿Por qué hurga en lo griego si busca lo propio? ¿Por qué estudia la abstracción si persigue lo más real? El arte, creía Torres, debe

poder conectar al hombre actual con “la música del cosmos”. La sociedad industrial moderna se ha desconectado del arte mágico primitivo que, como en Grecia, propiciaba en el espíritu humano un encuentro sagrado con la realidad más profunda y misteriosa.

Esa lectura llevó al artista uruguayo al abandono de su formación europea y la búsqueda de nuevos horizontes artísticos.

En su vuelta a Uruguay en 1934, con 60 años de edad y siendo un pintor reconocido en Europa, estudió el arte precolombino indígena y dedicó su energía a analizar las culturas y los símbolos primitivos del continente.

Latinoamérica encerraba una gran tradición simbólica que estaba relegada por el arte europeo. Pero Torres-García insistía: “Hay que olvidar artistas y escuelas, olvidar aquella literatura y aquella filosofía.”

Universalismo Constructivo, el testamento teórico de Torres-García, de enorme trascendencia para varias generaciones de artistas, fue publicado en Buenos Aires por la editorial Poseidón.

El epilogo de la fructífera relación entre Uruguay y Argentina llegó en 1970 con la exposición, Universalismo Constructivo, en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires.

“Universalismo Constructivo”, in which he summarizes his ideas on the visual arts: “In my mind, there is no greater conviction than this one: first the structure, then geometry, then the sign, lastly, the spirit, and always, geometry” (Universalismo Constructivo, 1944, page 119).

“I have said Escuela del Sur (‘School of the South’); because actually, our north is the South. There must not be a north, for us, other than that opposed to our South. For this reason we now place the map upside down, and then we already have a fair idea of our position, and not the one the rest of the world wishes it to be. The tip of America, stretching out, points insistently from now on, to the South, our north.”

He inverted the map of South America as a way of announcing the end of the colonial period of Latin American art and the beginning of a new artistic era. Why does he delve into the Greek model if he is seeking his own? Why does he study abstraction if he is pursuing the more real? Art, Torres believed, must be able to connect the man of today with “the music of the cosmos”. The modern industrial society has become disconnected from primitive magic art which, as it did in Greece, fostered in the human spirit a sacred encounter with the deepest and most mysterious reality.

That reading led the Uruguayan artist to abandon his European training, and to pursue new artistic horizons.

Upon his return to Uruguay in 1934, at 60 years of age and having become a renowned painter in Europe, he studied indigenous Pre-Columbian art and devoted his energy to the analysis of the cultures and the primitive symbols of the continent.

Latin America held an important symbolic tradition which was relegated by European art. But Torres-García insisted: “Artists and schools must be forgotten, forget that literature and that philosophy.”

Universalismo Constructivo, Torres-García’s theoretical legacy, of enormous significance to several generations of artists, was published in Buenos Aires by Editorial Poseidón.

The epilog of a fruitful relationship between Uruguay and Argentina was the exhibition Universalismo Constructivo, held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires in 1970.

Marian Goodman New York It would have been ideal for famed Mexico City-born artist Gabriel Orozco that Marian Goodman gallery be circular in shape. However, the spacious galleries ably unfold three distinct bodies of work that revert back, meld and take off in arcs from each other. These environments circulate around Orozco’s interest in spherical forms that can easily be mutated to recur— an interest that has underscored his work throughout the past twenty years he has been represented by the gallery.

After two decades it is apt that this solo exhibition begins with a personalized investigation of the boomerang. Fascinated by the circular flight patterns of these Indigenous Australian hunting tools, Orozco’s installation Inner Cuts, 2014 comprises a series of incomplete and half cut boomerang prototypes placed as flattened abstractions across the horizon line of the gallery’s first room. Standing among these objects-in-progress, the viewer is invited to navigate puzzle piece formations that dance illusively between negative and positive space, completion and uselessness.

In the second room Orozco curates a diorama of earthly propositions. A hazy spray-painted world map, Satellite, is an aerial backdrop to a found ashtray depicting a gridded earth. A name, Antonio Romero Jr., is engraved on a corner surface, however unlike Marcel Duchamp’s Urinal, Orozco intervenes with the readymade by placing a miniature 1957 Sputnik spacecraft replica in its center. Discarded cobblers’ patterns and Orozco’s old faux leather and bamboo cell phone cover bearing his signature circular stickers appear as repetitive abstractions and

Sin embargo, las espaciosas salas despliegan con propiedad tres conjuntos de obra diferenciados que retoman la misma temática, se fusionan y despegan en una serie de arcos que se extienden entre unos y otros. Estos ambientes giran alrededor del interés de Orozco en las formas esféricas en las cuales se pueden fácilmente provocar mutaciones para que se repitan – un interés que su obra ha subrayado a lo largo de los últimos veinte años, en los que ha sido representado por la galería.

Luego de dos décadas, es acertado que esta muestra comience con una investigación personalizada sobre el búmeran. Fascinado por los patrones de vuelo circulares de estas herramientas de caza de los indígenas australianos, Orozco creó la instalación Inner Cuts, 2014, que comprende una serie de prototipos de búmeran incompletos y cortados por la mitad, colocados como abstracciones aplanadas a lo largo de la línea del horizonte de la primera sala de la galería. De pie entre estos objetos en construcción, el espectador es invitado a navegar entre formaciones semejantes a fragmentos de rompecabezas que danzan ilusoriamente entre el espacio positivo y el negativo, la terminación y la inutilidad.

solar eclipses, transforming the room from a series of objects into allusions of geographic forms. Looking back, the boomerang prototypes appear as anti-anecdotal maps or icebergs set adrift independently of human existence.

Preserving this aloof bird’s eye viewpoint, the third room proposes a series of circular engraved grids that mimic the horizon line of the first room. The grid procession is interspersed by three red, blue and gold paintings of layered and dissected orbs composed as sprawling networks that spring from their core. Titled Inner Sections, 2014, circles and semicircles are cut and conjoined to document the arcing flight path a thrown boomerang might take.

Gabriel Orozco’s repetitive forms provide infinite vantage points and propose many possible trajectories for us to follow.

Despite these options it seems that recurrences of form make for inevitable meetings, crossovers, comparisons and juxtapositions.

In this way, we cannot help but come full circle.

En la segunda sala, Orozco oficia de curador de un diorama de proposiciones terrestres. Un borroso mapa del mundo pintado con aerosol, Satellite, sirve de telón aéreo para un cenicero encontrado que representa una Tierra reticulada. Un nombre, Antonio Romero Jr., se encuentra grabado en una esquina de la superficie; sin embargo, a diferencia del Urinal de Marcel Duchamp, Orozco utiliza el readymade como intervención colocando una réplica de una nave espacial Sputnik de 1957 en su centro. Patrones descartados de zapateros y calcomanías circulares de la vieja funda en cuero artificial y bambú del teléfono celular de Orozco que llevan su firma, aparecen como abstracciones y eclipses solares repetitivos, transformando la sala de una serie de objetos a una variedad de alusiones a formas geográficas. Mirando hacia atrás, los prototipos de búmeran aparecen como mapas antianecdóticos o témpanos a la deriva, independientes de la existencia humana.

Preservando esta distante vista aérea, la tercera sala propone una serie de cuadrículas circulares grabadas, que imitan la línea del horizonte de la primera sala. La procesión de cuadrículas está salpicada por tres pinturas de orbes estructurados en capas y diseccionados, en rojo, azul y dorado, compuestos como redes en expansión que brotan de su centro. Titulada Inner Sections, 2014, círculos y semicírculos son recortados y unidos para documentar la trayectoria de vuelo en forma de arco que podría seguir un búmeran al ser arrojado.

Las formas repetitivas de Gabriel Orozco ofrecen infinitos puntos de observación y proponen numerosas trayectorias posibles que podríamos seguir. A pesar de estas opciones, las recurrencias de formas parecerían conducir a encuentros, mezclas de estilos, comparaciones y yuxtaposiciones inevitables.

De esta forma, no podemos evitar el completar el círculo.

Allora & Calzadilla

Barbara Gladstone New York “Talking to you makes me think that Man’s descent from the apes hasn’t even started yet.”

The reference to evolution in the words of this musical score is significant, as is the choice to have two prepubescent choirboys singing it treble as they move throughout the space to sit, lie and stand upon ten colossal marble slabs. The score lyrics were written by celebrated artist duo Allora & Calzadilla (Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla) to Guarionex MoralesMatos’s composition for their exhibition Fault Lines. The boys’ performance is a bickering call-and-response battle that unfolds throughout the four galleries of Barbara Gladstone gallery in New York, as they traverse the obstacle course of marble steps.

More than playful mocking, their words are piercing and harsh, alluding to a moment that teeters between innocence and one when their voices might break—as trebles voices inevitably do— transforming them from boyhood to adulthood.

It is the moment between being whole and “breaking” that underlies Fault Lines. The marble slabs have been sourced from an array of geological contexts before being brought to Italy to be cut into angular pieces to create steps that mimic choral risers for the youthful performers in New York. Ranging in color from yellow to black, the marble has formed over thousands of years from impurities that recrystallize under conditions of extreme pressure or heat. Yet despite being susceptible to change only over extreme periods of time, the rock has been extracted, displaced, cut and polished, making the possibility of a fissure occurring real. As a result, despite the contrast between the hard permanence of rock and the temporary sweet melodic voices

“Hablar contigo me hace pensar que la evolución del Hombre como descendiente de los simios ni siquiera ha comenzado.”

La referencia a la evolución que hace esta banda sonora es significativa, como lo es la elección de presentar dos niños cantores preadolescentes entonándola como un coro de tiples mientras recorren el espacio para sentarse, yacer y pararse sobre diez colosales losas de mármol. La letra para esta partitura fue escrita por el famoso dúo artístico Allora & Calzadilla (Jennifer Allora y Guillermo Calzadilla) para la composición de Guarionex Morales-Matos que acompaña su exposición Fault Lines. La actuación de los muchachos es una pendenciera batalla de “letanía-respuesta” que se despliega a través de las cuatro salas de exposición de la galería Barbara Gladstone en Nueva York, a medida que atraviesan la pista de obstáculos sembrada de escalones de mármol. Más que una burla juguetona, sus palabras son ásperas y penetrantes, en alusión a un momento que oscila entre la inocencia y un instante en el que sus voces podrían quebrarse – como sucede inevitablemente con los tiples – pasando entonces de la mocedad a la adultez.

Es el momento entre estar entero y “romperse” el que constituye la base de Fault Lines. Las losas de mármol se han extraído de diversos contextos geológicos antes de ser transportadas a Italia para ser cortadas en forma de piezas angulares y crear escalones que imiten las gradas para coro que utilizarían los jóvenes intérpretes en Nueva York. Variando en color del amarillo al negro, el mármol se ha formado, a lo largo de miles de años, de impurezas que volvían a cristalizarse bajo condiciones de presión o temperatura extremas. Sin embargo, a pesar de ser vulnerables al cambio sólo durante períodos de tiempo con condiciones muy extremas, la roca ha sido extraída, desplazada, cortada y pulida, haciendo que la posibilidad de que se produzca

una fisura se torne real. Por lo tanto, a pesar de la permanencia de la roca dura y la temporalidad de las dulces voces melodiosas de los jóvenes cantores, éstas tienen en común un ineludible quiebre y una realidad de impermanencia.

El tono conflictivo de la banda sonora de Allora & Calzadilla es deliberadamente angustiante, desplazando el juvenil tiple y tal vez aun provocando el proceso de su evolución hacia el momento de su quiebre. Diseñada como un experimento social, Fault Lines sugiere, por un lado, que el quebrarse es parte del ciclo de la vida y por otro lado, incita audazmente a la disonancia.

of the youthful singers, they share in common an inescapable brokenness, and a reality of impermanence.

The conflictive tone of Allora & Calzadilla’s score is purposefully distressing, displacing the youthful treble and perhaps even prompting the process of their evolution to the moment of breaking. Designed as a social experiment, Fault Lines on the one hand suggests that breaking is part of the cycle of life, and on the other it boldly incites dissonance.

Rafael Díaz

Dina Mitrani Miami Anonymous is the first solo show in the United States of Rafael Díaz (El Salvador, 1972), who is presenting a series of photographs in which nearly a score of characters are represented in the classic portrait format, featuring the upper body, and using the formal strategy of the chiaroscuro technique – in which a black background highlights the areas of the body drastically lit up –, always sitting sideways and with the faces in the shadows.

Díaz’ point of departure is the idea of pondering on the condition of anonymity of people in today’s world, in which technologies including facial identification prevail; a world teeming with social media, chats, and so on. The series aims at disserting in favor of privacy (of the face) as a fundamental human right, and against the abuse of the image and the transference of information on the identity of individuals, corporations, etc., that we are experiencing at present as a result of technological advance.

Rafael Díaz was trained simultaneously as a physician at the university and as a painter and a photographer under the artistic tutelage of the Salvadoran painter César Menéndez. Since then, he has been practicing both professions in a parallel way, creating a feedback loop between his interest in the human condition, sickness and health, and the role of the human being in society. In his dual role as a physician and a photographer, Díaz is well aware of the role of confidentiality in the relationship with patients. His purpose in Anonymous has been to pose reflection on the vulnerability of identity. However, irrespective of physiognomy as a basis for the recognition of identity, other cultural or intrinsic aspects characteristic of each individual, such as age, race, skin tone or hair color are important and revealing, which in this group of non­portraits by Díaz makes it easier for us to clarify that identity is, undoubtedly, far more than a face.

Anonymous es la primera muestra en los Estados Unidos de Rafael Díaz (El Salvador, 1972), quien presenta una serie fotográfica en la que casi una veintena de personajes son retratados en formato clásico de retrato de medio cuerpo, con la misma estrategia formal del claroscuro –en la que un fondo negro resalta las zonas del cuerpo drásticamente iluminadas-, sentados siempre en posición lateral y con el rostro en sombras. Díaz parte de la idea de reflexionar acerca de la condición de anonimato de las personas en el mundo actual, en el que imperan las tecnologías de reconocimiento facial; un mundo repleto de medios sociales, chats, etc. La serie pretende disertar en favor de la privacidad (del rostro) como derecho fundamental de los humanos, y en contra del abuso de imagen y traspaso de información de identidad de los individuos, corporaciones, etc. que vivimos hoy día gracias a la tecnología.

Rafael Díaz se formó a la vez como médico en la universidad y como pintor y fotógrafo bajo el tutelaje artístico del pintor salvadoreño César Menéndez. Desde entonces, ha venido practicando de forma paralela ambas profesiones, retroalimentando su interés por lo humano, la condición de salud y enfermedad, así como el rol del humano en la sociedad. En su rol dual de médico y fotógrafo, Díaz es consciente del papel de la confidencialidad con el paciente, y ha querido en Anonymous, reflexionar acerca de la vulnerabilidad de la identidad. Sin embargo, al margen de la fisonomía como fundamento de reconocimiento de identidad, también los aspectos culturales o intrínsecos de cada ser, como la edad, raza, color de piel o cabello son importantes y reveladores, lo que en este grupo de no retratados de Díaz nos facilita dilucidar que la identidad va, sin duda, más allá del rostro.

Marisa Tellería

Frost Art Museum Miami In 1916, Constantin Brancusi created his iconic Sculpture for the Blind. Starting from the essential synesthesia that the title imposes, the marble ovoid shape imposed, in turn, a reformulation regarding the direction of art, and more specifically, regarding the perceptive process and the so-called “noble” materials used in art.

The work of Marisa Tellería (Nicaragua, 1963) is inscribed within that vast path inaugurated by Brancusi. Since the beginning of her career, Tellería has been obsessed with the re-signification of ordinary materials. Whether they be materials originating in the industrial world (as in the case of glass fiber or plaster with which the artist has experimented in a masterful way), or ordinary materials which may be found in our everyday environment, such as cotton, paper or fabrics, among many others, Tellería alters these materials, divesting them of poor functional associations to generate new sensory relationships.

Still, her most recent solo show, which opened at FIU’s Frost Art Museum, constitutes a tangible expression of this.

En 1916, Constantin Brancusi realizaba su icónica Sculpture for the Blind (Escultura para ciegos). A partir de la sinestesia esencial impuesta por el título, la marmórea forma ovoide imponía una reformulación de los derroteros del arte y, en específico, del proceso perceptivo y de los denominados materiales “nobles” en el arte.

La obra de Marisa Tellería (Nicaragua, 1963) se inscribe dentro de ese vasto camino inaugurado por Brancusi. Desde el comienzo de su carrera, Tellería ha estado obsesionada con la re-significación de materiales ordinarios. Ya sean estos materiales procedentes del mundo industrial (como es el caso de la fibra de vidrio y el yeso con los que la artista ha experimentado magistralmente) o materiales anodinos de nuestro entorno cotidiano como algodón, papel o telas, entre tantos otros, Tellería trastoca estos materiales despojándolos de asociaciones funcionales chatas para generar nuevas relaciones sensoriales. Still, su más reciente muestra personal, abierta en el Frost Art Museum de FIU es expresión tangible de ello.

La exposición, dominada por instalaciones específicas realizadas en técnica mixta, se apoya en materiales maleables como mallas, tul de colores o alambres, que devienen motivo progresivo generador de una estructura orgánica que parece en pleno estado de expansión. Este cambio de enfoque con respecto al material –sutil y radical a un tiempo, genera en el receptor una mirada transfigurada, capaz ahora de vivenciar la riqueza poética de la que son portadores materiales otrora clasificados como “ordinarios” o “groseros”.

Tellería ha recreado tres ambientes temporales de inmersión integrados por pequeños gestos y combinación de materiales simples que generan una atmósfera de suspensión esencial al estado psicológico que persigue la artista: esa suerte de ralentí que nos lleva de la mano a la introspección y el diálogo íntimo con la pieza que domina en las obras expuestas ahora en el Frost Art Museum.

The exhibition, dominated by specific installations executed in mixed media, is based on malleable materials such as mesh, colored tulle or wire, which become a progressive motif generating an organic structure that seems to be in full expansion.

This change in the way of approaching the material – at the same time subtle and radical –­ elicits in the viewer a transfigured gaze, now capable of experiencing the poetic richness present in materials once classified as “ordinary” or “rough”.

Tellería has recreated three immersive temporal environments comprising small gestures and a combination of simple materials that generate an atmosphere of suspension, essential to generate the psychological state the artist pursues: that sort of slow motion that leads us to introspection and to an intimate dialogue with the work that is dominant among the works now on exhibit at the Frost Art Museum.

Casa de la Hacienda La Trinidad (HLTPC) Caracas In 1980, the exhibition Didáctica y dialéctica del color, by master of color Carlos Cruz-Diez (Venezuela, 1923), was held at the Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB), Caracas. This first exhibition was so successful that it was then presented as a travelling exhibition in different countries, with the aim of allowing the viewer to have access, in a comprehensible and simple way, to the artist’s codes. In this exhibition he explains his studies of physics on the theories of Young, Goethe, Newton, Chevreul’s treaty, Albers’ researches, and of course, going through the Impressionist painters. Cruz-Diez has always been obsessed with educating the public. This has been a policy in his life. It has allowed the layman to learn about these codes through the reading of his work, and to feel identified with his oeuvre. And it has also allowed people, in the case of the chromosaturations, the viewers –as is also the case with Soto’s penetrables – to “introduce themselves” into the work, so that they become involved with the pieces and as a result, they become immediately identified with the works and the artists.

Thirty-four years later, this exhibition is held once again, this time at the Casa de la Hacienda La Trinidad (HLTPC) in Caracas, this time in a cultural alliance CCD-USB-HLTPC. Once again the artist presents his didactic exhibition, with the aim of bringing his work close to the new generations.

It comprises forty-seven pieces that contribute to understand the master’s work, ranging from his first experiences to the physichromies. We quote a paragraph by the artist in the catalog of the exhibition of 1980, which in our opinion, still applies today: “My purpose has always been that of a painter, and as such I view the world that surrounds me. I try to grasp in all things that which may be used in art.

Like all painters of my generation I am the direct son of Impressionism, of Cubism, of Fauvism, of Constructivism, which represented pictorial concerns, postulates and definitions and offered solutions from the painter to painting.

I speak about these things because there is a generalized tendency to confuse the world of ideas with the world of art. Painting is performed by artists with ideas of their own from the world of narration and of literature in general, a consequence of Dadaism and Surrealism. These movements, which in the beginning aroused a renovating spirit of art, have contributed, over time, to making many painters forget their commitment as painters and that of revolutionizing painting”.

Undoubtedly, Carlos Cruz-Diez is a master of painting. At the age of 91 he is still as fresh and as curious as a child. An exceptional being that transmits joy. This exhibition, contained within the oasis which is Hacienda La Trinidad, allows us to approach the color theories of the master of kinetic art.

En 1980 es exhibida la muestra Didáctica y dialéctica del color, del maestro del color Carlos Cruz-Diez (Venezuela, 1923), en la Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB), de Caracas. Esta primera muestra tuvo tanto éxito que fue presentada de forma itinerante, en diversos países, con el objeto de que el espectador tuviera acceso, de manera legible y simple, a los códigos del artista. Allí explica sus estudios de física sobre las teorías de Young, Goethe, Newton, el tratado de Chevreul, las investigaciones de Albers pasando por supuesto, por los pintores impresionistas. Cruz-Diez siempre ha tenido obsesión por educar al público. Ello ha sido una línea de su vida. Ha permitido, en la lectura de su trabajo, que el lego aprehenda de esos códigos y se sienta identificado con la obra. Aparte de que, en el caso de las chromosaturacions el espectador – igual que ocurre con los penetrables de Soto –, las personas se “introducen” en la obra, con lo cual se involucran con las piezas y esto trae como resultado una identificación inmediata con las obras y los artistas.

Treinta y cuatro años más tarde es vuelta a exhibir esta exposición esta vez en la Casa de la Hacienda La Trinidad (HLTPC) en Caracas, esta vez en una unión cultural CCD-USBHLTPC. Nuevamente el artista presenta su exposición didáctica, con el objeto de aproximar su obra a las nuevas generaciones.

Se trata de cuarenta y siete piezas para entender la obra del maestro, desde sus primeras experiencias, hasta llegar a las physichromies. Transcribimos parte de las palabras del artista en el catálogo de la exposición, de 1980, las cuales, a nuestro juicio, siguen vigentes: “Mi propósito ha sido siempre el de un pintor y como tal, veo el mundo que me rodea. Trato de aprehender de todas las cosas lo que de plástica pueda desatarse. Como todos los pintores de mi generación soy hijo directo del impresionismo, del cubismo, del fauvismo, del constructivismo, que fueron preocupaciones, postulados y definiciones pictóricas y dieron soluciones del pintor a la pintura. Hablo de estas cosas porque hay una tendencia generalizada a confundir el mundo de las ideas con el mundo de la plástica.

Se hace pintura con ideas propias del mundo de la narrativa y de la literatura en general, consecuencia del dadaísmo y el surrealismo. Estos movimientos, que en un principio infundieron un espíritu renovador del arte, con el tiempo han contribuido a que muchos pintores olviden su compromiso de pintor y el de revolucionar la pintura”.

No hay duda de que Carlos Cruz-Diez es un maestro de la pintura.

A sus 91 años tiene aún la frescura y la curiosidad de un niño. Un ser excepcional que transmite alegría. Esta exposición, enmarcada dentro del oasis que es la Hacienda La Trinidad, nos permite aproximarnos a las teorías del color, del maestro del cinetismo.

D’Museo Caracas An assemblage implies reorganizing the memory. The artist transforms that which has been discarded into something aesthetic. That residue may remain in the workshop’s attic or stored in the artist’s memory for years. Suddenly, something happens that allows the artist to remember that which has been forgotten, and he or she transforms it into art. And that which was once looked down on becomes art. Here lies the fascination of assemblages.

Jesús Caviglia (Venezuela, 1955) has developed his artistic career based on this theme. In Venezuela, it may be said that we have a tradition of masters of assemblage. Perhaps it was Reverón who initiated it by chance with the construction of his

Jesús Caviglia (Venezuela, 1955) ha desarrollado su carrera plástica con ese tema. En Venezuela, se puede decir que tenemos tradición de maestros con el tema del ensamblaje.

inspired objects. He was followed by Alejandro Otero – who later resorted to other languages because his restless and creative imaginary did not allow him to dwell on a single theme. At a later stage, Elsa Gramcko – who still surprises us with the longstanding validity of her discourse –was a genuine alchemist in the handling of textures and forms. Oscar d’Empaire made assemblage the leitmotiv of his work, and he developed it as a poetics of the recovered object. Also Miguel Von Dangel, Carlos Zerpa and Mario Abreu developed it, in a fetishist and syncretic atmosphere. In the latest generations, Ricardo Benaim, Alberto Asprino and Jesús Caviglia stand out.

In this recent exhibition, Caviglia shows his interest in the small format and the personal aspects of books. He goes back to books that are used, old and shabby, and which were once poorly treated and finally abandoned. He recreates private spaces and renders them secret. He thus induces a new gaze on books, whose purpose ceases to be that of being read to become inducers of reflection, based on their design, titles and forms.

Frames discarded because they have fallen into disuse or are anachronistic become a pretext for his discourse with their new patinas and intervened in with a seductive “non finito”. And the reflections of famous authors or the gaze of classic painters become the support for the proposal – reformulated and updated.

Assemblage will never die. New practitioners will always appear, because man is obliged to look to the past and gather up its debris in order to reformulate it.

Quizás haya sido Reverón el que lo inicia, de manera casual, con la fabricación de sus objetos de inspiración. Le seguirá Alejandro Otero –que luego devino en otros lenguajes porque su imaginario, inquieto y creativo, no le permitía detenerse en un solo tema. Posteriormente, Elsa Gramcko –quien todavía nos sorprende con lo vigente de su discurso-, quien fue una verdadera alquimista en el manejo de texturas y formas. Fue Oscar d’Empaire quien hace del ensamblaje el leitmotiv de su obra y lo desarrolla como una poética del objeto recobrado. También Miguel Von Dangel, Carlos Zerpa y Mario Abreu lo desarrollan, en un ámbito fetichista y sincrético. De las últimas generaciones destacan Ricardo Benaim, Alberto Asprino y Jesús Caviglia.

En esta última muestra se interesa Caviglia con el pequeño formato y lo íntimo del libro. Retoma los mismos que son usados, viejos y manoseados y que alguna vez fueron maltratados y, finalmente, abandonados. Recrea espacios privados y los vuelve secretos. Establece así un dialogo con el espectador.

Permite así una nueva mirada a los libros que dejan de ser propósitos de lectura para ser de reflexión, apoyándose en su diagramación, títulos o formas. Marcos apartados por el desuso o por anacrónicos se vuelven pretexto del discurso con sus nuevas pátinas e intervenidos con un “non finito” seductor.

Y las reflexiones de autores famosos o la mirada de pintores clásicos se vuelve asidero para el planteamiento, reformulado y actualizado. El ensamblaje nunca morirá. Siempre aparecerán nuevos intérpretes porque el hombre está obligado a mirar el pasado y recoger de sus escombros para reformularlos.

Ruth Benzacar Buenos Aires Flavia Da Rin’s (Buenos Aires, 1978) alluring images usually distil fantasy, humor, and a dissimulated melancholy; they are structured around the artist’s appearance in constant and infinite transformation. In Terpsícore entreguerras (Terpsichore between Wars), her exhibition at Ruth Benzacar gallery, the artist replaces on this occasion the colors and large format of her previous works with intimate portraits in black and white. Da Rin circumscribes the space of photographic intervention mainly to her image –always versatile and placed in real or illusory places – which include performance, since she performs and poses for the photographs. Terpsichore – a slender young girl with a jovial air and a light attitude – is in Greek mythology the muse of dance.

In these digitally worked photographs, Da Rin traces the steps of daring women who – between 1918 and 1939 – became associated with the historical avant-garde movements through dance: Lizica Codreanu (Romanian dancer of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes; she captivated Brancusi and Sonia Delaunay); Giannina Censi (Italian, she performed futurist dance, the Aerial Dances); Mary Wigman (German, she was the source of inspiration for expressionist dance); Valeska Gert (dancer, actress, Berlin film and cabaret star, she was a harbinger of the punk movement); Martha Graham (pioneer of modern dance; according to experts, her influence on dance was comparable to Picasso’s influence on the visual arts).

Las seductoras imágenes de Flavia Da Rin (Buenos Aires, 1978) suelen destilar fantasía, humor y, disimulada, melancolía; están estructuradas alrededor de la apariencia de la artista en continúa e infinita transformación. En Terpsícore entreguerras, su muestra en galería Ruth Benzacar, la artista esta vez cambia los colores y grandes formatos de sus obras anteriores por íntimos retratos en blanco y negro. Da Rin circunscribe el espacio de la invención fotográfica principalmente a su imagen –siempre versátil y emplazada ante espacios reales o ilusorios–, que incluyen la performance, ya que ella actúa y posa para las fotos. Terpsícore –joven esbelta, con un aire jovial y de actitud ligera– es en la mitología griega la musa de la danza.

En estas fotografías, trabajadas digitalmente, Da Rin va tras los pasos de arriesgadas mujeres que –entre los años 1918 y 1939– se asociaron desde la danza a las vanguardias históricas: Lizica Codreanu (bailarina rumana de los Ballets Russes de Diaghilev, cautivó a Brancusi y a Sonia Delaunay); Giannina Censi (italiana, interpretó la danza futurista, el vuelo del avión); Mary Wigman (alemana, inspiración de la danza expresionista); Valeska Gert (bailarina, actriz, estrella del cine y cabaret berlinés anticipó el movimiento punk); Martha Graham (pionera de la danza moderna, según los expertos, influyó en la danza como Picasso en las artes plásticas).

movimientos, la variada selección de las coreografías, el vigor y los vínculos de las bailarinas con las artes visuales. Así, graciosa y etérea, Da Rin viaja al margen dichoso de un momento histórico que –aún con el auge del fascismo y con la economía mundial en crisis– revolucionó las artes (dadaísmo, constructivismo, surrealismo, futurismo, modernismo) y estableció una bohemia tan problemática como fascinante.

Vasari Buenos Aires The images of Fuera de foco, works by Alejandro Kuropatwa (Buenos Aires, 1956-2003), presented at Vasari gallery, were shot and produced in New York, where the artist lived for around six years. A long trip through Europe took him to New York, where he discovered that his thing was photography, although he had studied painting. He bought a small used camera and after finalizing his studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Parsons School of Design, he began an intense and brilliant career. “Those were years of folly, of creation... times of lots of leather, sex, drugs and rock & roll... wonderful, we believed everything was possible. […]

It was one of the best moments of my life and I have no regrets”, Kuropatwa revealed to the author of this article (El ojo del que mira. Artistas de los Noventa, Fundación Proa, 1998). These “out of focus” photos reflect that long party, in which among other things “we went in sober [to the discos], and came out totally high”.

The extravagant atmosphere of the suggestive photographs of Fuera de foco (1982) is not a product of chance. It is part of a process of aesthetic search, based on straight photography later elaborated and retouched in the laboratory. Manipulation and contrast made the shadows grow, and at the same time diluted the forms, blurred the outlines. This combination of experimental images radiates the artist’s vital and aesthetic freedom, which characterized his New York experience. Later on he specialized in portraits, straight but not objective photos of rock singers, figures of the Buenos Aires city underground, celebrities from the reality show showbiz, women of the social circuit. Renowned for his disquieting, and alternatively beautiful images with ironic notes, when he died of AIDS at the age of 47, Kuropatwa had already enjoyed recognition for many years, and been appreciated even for his political gestures linked to his illness.

Las imágenes de Fuera de foco, de Alejandro Kuropatwa (Buenos Aires, 1956-2003), presentadas en galería Vasari, fueron tomadas y producidas en Nueva York, donde vivió alrededor de seis años. Un largo viaje por Europa lo llevó a Nueva York, donde descubrió que lo suyo era la fotografía aunque había estudiado pintura. Compró una camarita usada y tras sus estudios en el Fashion Institute of Technology y la Parsons School of Design inició allí una intensa y brillante trayectoria. “Fueron años de locura, de creación... tiempos de mucho cuero, sexo, droga y rock & roll... maravillosos, creíamos que todo era posible. […] Fue uno de los mejores momentos de mi vida y no me arrepiento de nada”, dijo Kuropatwa a quien escribe estas líneas (El ojo del que mira. Artistas de los Noventa, Fundación Proa, 1998). Estas fotografías “fuera de foco” reflejan esa larga fiesta, donde entre otras cosas “entrábamos sobrios [a las discos], y salíamos totalmente dados vuelta”.

La atmósfera extravagante de las sugerentes fotografías de Fuera de foco (1982) no es producto de la casualidad. Constituyen parte de un proceso de búsqueda estética, a partir de fotos directas trabajadas y retocadas en el laboratorio. Manipulación y contraste hicieron crecer las sombras al tiempo que diluyeron las formas, desdibujaron contornos. Esta combinación de imágenes experimentales irradia la libertad vital y estética del artista, tal como fue su experiencia neoyorquina. Más adelante se especializó en retratos, fotos directas pero no objetivas de cantantes de rock, figuras del underground porteño, personajes de la farándula surgida de los reality shows, mujeres del circuito social. Reconocido por sus imágenes poco tranquilizadoras y, alternativamente, bellas con acentos irónicos, cuando murió a los 47 años de sida, Kuropatwa desde hacía años ya era apreciado incluso por sus gestos políticos vinculados con su enfermedad.

Espacio Fundación Telefónica Buenos Aires Darkness and silence, favorable for introspection – is the experience of expanded cinema that Charly Nijenshon proposes at the renovated Espacio Fundación Telefónica; a series of three video-installations he created in collaboration with Juan Pablo Ferlat, Teresa Pereda, Edgardo Rudnitzky and the native communities of each locality. Twelve huge screens are turned on simultaneously around us and submerge us in an absolutely hypnotic experience as we watch a calm and pleasant sequence of scenes which are totally removed from our everyday reality, but which are, however, possible. Unusual but believable. Scenes in which man is the center; man surrounded by an extreme nature: intimidating and impressive. Sky and water merge in their own reflection, an ancient flooded wood or the deep crevasses in the Continental Ice Shield, and man always there: exploring that blurred boundary which once was the horizon, sailing adrift or observing everything from the mists of time.

Oscuridad y silencio, propicios para la introspección –sólo hasta que comienza la función–, es la experiencia de cine expandido que nos propone Charly Nijenshon en el renovado Espacio Fundación Telefónica; un conjunto de tres videoinstalaciones en las que 108

trabajó en colaboración con Juan Pablo Ferlat, Teresa Pereda, Edgardo Rudnitzky y las comunidades originarias de cada lugar.

Simultáneamente doce inmensas pantallas se encienden a nuestro alrededor y nos sumergen en una vivencia absolutamente hipnótica en la que desfilan, de manera calma y placentera, escenas totalmente alejadas de nuestra realidad cotidiana, pero posibles. Insólitas pero creíbles. Escenas en las que el hombre es el centro; el hombre rodeado por la naturaleza extrema: intimidant e e imponente. Agua y cielo que se unen en su propio reflejo, un antiguo bosque inundado o las profundas grietas de los hielos continentales y, allí siempre el hombre: transitando ese límite desdibujado que supo ser horizonte, navegando a la deriva u observando desde la noche de los tiempos.

Estas tres vídeoinstalaciones de Nijensohn, El naufragio de los hombres, Dead Forest Storm y El éxodo de los olvidados, si bien proponen un lento transcurrir de las imágenes, generan una tensión dramática que va “in crescendo” hasta penetrar profundamente en nuestra conciencia y revelarnos el estado de emergencia en el que estamos inmersos, aun sin saberlo.

En sus proyectos performáticos trabaja con las comunidades originarias del lugar; necesita que tengan sus raíces hundidas en la tierra y permanece el tiempo que sea necesario para poder conectarse energéticamente con la magia que se produce cuando se establece el vínculo. Nijenshon es un conquistador de lo inconquistable que siempre escribe el mismo libro: hombres solos en paisajes extremos. Tiene mucho de poeta y algo de asesino serial, como él mismo se define, ya que nada en sus proyectos está librado al azar.

Charly Nijensohn se siente un extranjero en todas partes, no tiene bandera pero siente que América es su casa. Cree en el hombre, defiende sistemáticamente el planteo estético de cómo quiere vivir y es feliz.

de los hombres, Dead Forest Storm and El éxodo de los olvidados, propose a slow projection of the images, these generate a dramatic tension that goes in crescendo until it deeply penetrates our conscience and reveals to us the state of emergency in which we are immersed, even without knowing it.

In his performance projects, he works with the indigenous communities in each place; he needs his works to be deeply rooted in the earth, and he remains in each place for as long as it takes his energy to connect with the magic that arises when the bond is established. Nijenshon is a conqueror of the unconquerable who always writes the same book: solitary men in extreme landscapes. He has many traits of a poet and some of a serial killer, as he defines himself, since nothing in his projects is left to chance.

Charly Nijensohn feels a foreigner everywhere; he has no flag, but he feels that America is his home. He believes in man; he systematically defends the aesthetic proposal that represents the way in which he wants to live, and he is happy.

Nora Vechy Logioio

Rubbers Buenos Aires The waves of the sea, the undulations of the desert and the tracks of the wind are present in the works of this sensitive sculptress who, guided by a pressing need, changes their scale turning them into monumental pieces.

Before shaping the first curve, Vechy Logioio slowly and gradually approaches it, until it becomes wave, desert, wind, and from this fusion scuptress/wave-desert-wind, the curve becomes shaped, natural and obedient.

After her most recent exhibition and guided by her own rhythm, she felt the need for introspection and she took refuge in Rome. The conviction in this new project was born from the contemplation of the Roman Forum, turned into a monumental sculpture –as defined by Vechy –; she felt that her work needed the freedom to expand in order to enter into a dialogue with nature. Thus, the five monumental works exhibited in Galería Rubbers were born.

Vechy Logioio had her artistic training with Pettoruti and Butler, as well as with Cogorno. Before exploring bronze sculpture, she created collages and sculpture objects. Vechy models the form with flexible hardboard or with lead plates and then begins the process of lost-wax casting, in which the melting pot, the heat and the noise typical of the task become fused, injecting life into the material to make it fold, obediently, following the artist’s plans.

Then the alchemy of the glaze and the wise choice of the base will follow.

Las olas del mar, las ondulaciones del desierto y la huella del viento están presentes en las obras de esta sensible escultora que, guiada por una necesidad imperiosa, las cambia de escala volviéndolas monumentales.

Antes de trabajar la primera curva, Vechy Logioio se acerca lentamente a ella más y más, hasta convertirse en ola, en desierto, en viento y, desde esta fusión escultora/ola-desierto-viento, la curva se modela natural y obediente.

Después de su última exposición y guiada por su propio ritmo, necesitó de la introspección y se refugió en Roma. Desde la contemplación del Foro romano devenido en monumental escultura –como Vechy lo define–, nació la convicción de este nuevo proyecto; sintió que su obra necesitaba la libertad de expandirse para dialogar con la naturaleza. Así nacieron las cinco obras monumentales que se exhiben en Galería Rubbers.

Antes de llegar a la escultura en bronce creó collages y objetos escultóricos. Vechy modela la forma con cartón flexible o con planchas de plomo para luego comenzar el proceso de fundición a la cera perdida, en el que el crisol, el metal, el calor y el ruido propio de la tarea se funden inyectando vida a la materia para que se pliegue, obediente, a los designios de la artista.

Luego vendrá la alquimia de las pátinas y la sabia elección del basamento.

Las formas creadas por Logioio trasmiten una sensualidad secreta que nace de la armonía y despiertan resonancias íntimas en quienes las contemplan. La mirada del espectador se transforma en caricia que las envuelve y recorre, avanzando lentamente, conservando el impulso vital y preparando cuerpo y espíritu para la contemplación. Contemplación que, desde la calma, precede al encuentro natural de las formas.

Isabel Aninat Santiago de Chile The exploration the Uruguayan artist Pedro Tyler addresses in his works ranges from the problems of scale and size, typical of sculpture, to the hybrid languages of the visual movements of installation. His artistic research during the past few years concentrates on the assembly of volumetric structures of rulers, mostly in steel and wood. From September 27 through November 1, the exhibition Extensa, which brings together his most recent works, will be held at Galería Isabel Aninat. In the main room of the gallery, the artist features a setting of great proportions, consisting of seven volumetric pieces, two of which are kinetic works. The work Principio de razón suficiente, a geometric sculpture of links made of steel and glass rulers, whose name is derived from the principle of the German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz which states that there must be a sufficient reason (or grounds) for any event to occur, is worth highlighting. Mention may also be made of the work Omega, inspired by the constant of mathematician Gregory Chaitin, a sculpture made of steel rulers of variable sizes, composed of hexagons, which as a whole, resemble the form of a beehive. Both sculpture installations do the job of casting a doubt on the accuracy of metrics, by demonstrating the numerical non­computability of objects.

Distance and movement are reproduced under the serial quality of the steel rulers, with the purpose of re-raising, from the visual arts, the problems which intercept the fields of mathematics and philosophy. Drawing upon the modern philosophers Descartes, Leibniz and Spinoza, and on the contemporary mathematicians Gödel, Turing and Cantor, the artist expands on concepts such as the infinite and the incalculable, under the limits of a measuring instrument. The rationality of the fixed structures of thought is questioned through the ideas of movement and nondetermination inherent in the poetical aspect of his oeuvre.

La obra del artista uruguayo Pedro Tyler transita desde los problemas de la escala y la medida, propios de la escultura, a los lenguajes híbridos de los desplazamientos visuales de la instalación. Su investigación artística durante los últimos años se concentra en el ensamble de estructuras volumétricas de reglas, en su mayoría de acero y madera. Entre el 27 de septiembre y el 1 de noviembre, exhibe en Galería Isabel Aninat, la muestra Extensa, que reúne sus últimos trabajos. En la sala principal de la galería, el artista realiza un montaje de grandes proporciones, compuesto por siete piezas volumétricas, dos de las cuales son obras cinéticas. Destaca el trabajo Principio de razón suficiente, escultura geométrica de eslabones de reglas de acero y vidrio, cuyo nombre proviene del principio del filósofo alemán Gottfried Leibniz, de que todo debe tener un fundamento o razón para que suceda. Cabe también mencionar la obra Omega, inspirada en la constante del matemático Gregory Chaitin, escultura en reglas de acero, de medida variable, compuesta de hexágonos, que en suma asemejan la forma de una colmena. Ambas instalaciones escultóricas se encargan de dejar en entredicho la exactitud de la métrica, al evidenciar la incomputabilidad numérica de los objetos. La distancia y el movimiento son reproducidos bajo la serialidad de las reglas de acero, con el ánimo de replantear desde las artes visuales, los problemas que interceptan el campo de las matemáticas y la filosofía. Inspirándose en los filósofos modernos Descartes, Leibniz y Spinoza, y en los matemáticos contemporáneos Gödel, Turing y Cantor, el artista problematiza conceptos como lo infinito y lo incalculable, bajo los límites de un instrumento de medición. La racionalidad de las estructuras fijas del pensamiento es cuestionada mediante las ideas de movimiento e indeterminación propias del quehacer poético de su obra.
