11th Annual Moonlight Bike Ride Saturday August 23, 2014
Registration & packet pick up 5:00-6:15 pm on west side of Discovery Center in the MSU parking lot. First 200 registrations will receive a free t-shirt. Plan to dress up both your bike and yourself and compete in Costume Contest for both individual & team categories. The 4th year for the “New Moon” traveling team trophy will be awarded to the largest team! Ride starts at 6:30pm and ends in Discovery Center parking lot at 8:30pm. Enjoy Village Inn pancakes after the ride and music from Delta Sol Revival.

Science Sprout Museum Days are dedicated to early learners (ages 6 and under). On Science Sprout Museum Days, Discovery Center staff will not schedule any field trips for groups over age 6. You and your young scientists
will be able to explore, discover, and enjoy the museum surrounded by other young scientists! Special science demonstrations, science story times, and handson experiences will be available each Science Sprout Day.

Jefferson Ave • Springfield, MO) • FREE Carbon nanotubes and graphene--Advanced materials are needed to enable the evolution of next generation technologies that are expected to become essential to everyday life - from wearable electronics, real time health monitoring devices, to smaller, faster, more efficient electronic circuits and everything in between! Come spend an evening finding out what carbon nanotubes and graphene are, why research scientists are so interested in these items, and even more importantly, what the future holds for incorporating carbon nanotubes and graphene into a variety of technologies! Dr. Stephen Gibbons, Director of Technology for Brewer Science’s Carbon Electronics Center located at the Jordan Valley Innovation Center, will share the past, present and future aspects of this exciting nano science!

Back to School Supply Drive Supporting The Salvation Army
July 1- September 30 • All donations = Free Admission* Discovery Center is partnering with the Salvation Army to collect donations from the community to provide local children with the school supplies needed for the upcoming school year. A barrel will be placed inside the Discovery Center lobby for supplies to be dropped off during regular hours of operation. Staff Member Jordan Tarrant “As an employee at the Discovery Center I’d say the best part about working here is the ability to use visual tools, like the Tesla Coil exhibit. It isn’t always easy to engage with visitors, but I jump at the opportunity to express my personal obsession with Nikola Tesla using one of his most awe inspiring creations. Though not one of his more practical inventions it does bring a group together. People love learning about the Coil after experiencing its electrical display. Every time a visitor asks about it I get excited by the anticipation of showing them the power of science here at the Discovery Center. It’s these kind of things that make working here so special.” -Jordan Tarrant
We love our Volunteers Discovery Center couldn’t do all we do without the time investment from our volunteers. Our summers are filled with activities and events, so there are plenty of possibilities. If you are interested in volunteering with us at the Discovery Center of Springfield – We have a place for you! DCS offers unique opportunities to participate and support the center’s mission to provide creative and educational exhibits, as well as an experience that is enriching for kids and parents alike. We have opportunities for one-time volunteers to help with events and weekly volunteers to invest in the overall visitor experience by using their interests and areas of expertise. Our program has flexible hours and we are happy to accommodate your schedule. You don’t even have to be a science expert! If you are passionate about inspiring others to learn, like to tinker and take on small projects, or just love office work, there is something here for you!
Currently, we are in need of people who are interested in doing construction of exhibits, events, and weekly visitor activities. If you are gifted in another area, please contact us and we will find a place for you! This past April at the annual volunteer banquet Discovery Center said thank you to all volunteers and honored longtime community leader, Jim Jaeger for 17 years of service at Discovery Center!
