Science Festival
The Orkney International Science Festival takes place every year at the beginning of September. It’s a kaleidoscopic way to see Orkney and get insights into the past, present and future – and hear brilliant people on sparkling form. It’s a festival of ideas, often from the frontiers – of space, of life in the ocean depths, of the forces moving continents. There is news of the latest developments harnessing the power of wave and tide in Orkney waters. There is archaeology and Arctic exploration, astronomy and art/science exploration – all in historic and atmospheric settings. The seven-day programme is packed with events including talks, outings, exhibitions, concerts and even ceilidhs! There is also a ‘family day’ full of activities for all ages, a vintage car rally, a pipe band parade, and opportunities to sample local food and drink.
