Welcome to your November issue... N

o vember? No way! Are we really only ten weeks away from 2024?

Still, it’s been for many of us a most enjoyable year so far and, with the festive period just around the corner, there are plenty of wonderful things still to come. Remember, though, that it shouldn’t just be “looking after number one”, as there are so many people for whom the coming weeks, (made worse by the cold and cruel winter weather), are going to be “endured” rather than “enjoyed”. Let’s all look out for each other, especially that lonely neighbour who we think might be ok, but why not just make the call to make sure? Kindness and being a good neighbour cost nothing! A big thank you to all our contributors and advertisers in all our five “Discovering” magazines who continue, month after month, to supply such a wide range of informative, entertaining, and very useful features and advice.

Claire x

For many years I have always tried to attend the local Remembrance Day Parade to show my respect for those who gave their lives while serving the country. In the early days it was to honour those people who died in the two World Wars of the twentieth century, with thoughts later extending to the Falklands Conflict and Gulf wars. Sadly, recent events have shown us that worldwide conflict is not something from the past, it is an abomination that we unfortunately have to continue to tolerate in the 21st century. I’m sure many of you share my horror at the tragic stories that have emanated from Ukraine and now the Middle East and the suffering of many innocent men, women and children. The March service is usually supported by hundreds of people of all ages and on Sunday, November 12th I plan to join them again. Please note that because of the town centre regeneration works, this year’s Remembrance Sunday Parade will culminate near the band stand in West End Park with a two-minute silence at 11am followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. Hope to see you there...

he best job you can undertake is to get the soil in the best condition for next year’s crops by pressing on with winter digging.

This is most important if you have heavy or clay soil, where you should turn the soil over and leave it to the elements to break down. You can add well-rotted manure, which can be left on the surface and if you have acidic soil spread some lime over the surface and rake it in but not at the same time as adding manure. Alternatively, if you follow the “Nodig” method, now is the time to add a good layer of mulch: the worms will pull it down into the soil, which will help with aeration.

spade. Then put a layer of sharp sand or grit in the base of the slit trench. 4. Insert the cuttings to about half their depth, spacing them about 20cm apart. Firm the soil back around them, then water in well. Water in dry spells and the cuttings should be ready to transplant in about a year’s time.

Other tasks for this month include: • Secure covers over compost heaps/bins. Although the material needs to be damp, winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow the rotting process down. • Plant garlic cloves, if you haven’t already, as they like to have a period of dormancy and cold before they start growing in the spring. If you have heavy soil, then put either gravel November is an ideal time to propagate fruit or sharp sand in the base of the hole before bushes: suitable fruits include gooseberries, planting and then cover them with compost blackcurrants, white currants, and redcurrants. to get them off to a good start. Scott (37), who has more than sixteen years’ experience, said: “I am really pleased with how the business has grown since we launched. ARE YOU FED UP WITH CLUTTER?

F

Have you ever looked around your home and thought “Arghhh we could do with more more space?” Or are you about to have a tidy up but don't want to throw everything out? Well, the answer could be to make more use of the space you've already got, literally under your own roof.

or many homeowners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be difficult and dangerous to reach. Peterboroughbased, loft ladder installer, Access4Lofts, whose slogan is 'Creating Space The Easy Way' can change all that, often in less than a day. Access4Lofts Peterborough owner Paul Norgate says much of the work he conducts is for growing families looking for more storage space or retired people looking for the safest access to their loft available. Paul says that with space at such a premium, it makes sense to make the most of your loft: “Installing a loft ladder is quick and affordable. It's less expensive than a garden shed and it means you don't have to store everything out of the house.”

For the full works, customers can get a retractable three-section ladder, a new hatch, a floating floor over the loft insulation and lighting. Paul says the new ladders are spring-assisted and lighter so they're much easier to use, come with a safety handrail and there is an option of widetread wooden steps. Access4Lofts is an approved “Which?”-trusted trader which means the company has passed its stringent checks. The company has full public liability insurance and all ladders and work carried out come with a lifetime guarantee. To book a free survey and quote, visit www.access4lofts.co.uk/peterborough or give Paul a call on (01733) 663207.

Consumer Champion, Safe Local Trades Celebrates its Fifteenth Anniversary

An impressive A to Z of local traders have joined forces to help a leading consumer champion mark a major milestone. Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades (which matches customers to a tried-and-tested, vetted and DBS-checked trader at the touch of a button) is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, with more tradespeople in the PE area than any other national network. October 1st saw the business, set up by SLT director Eileen Le Voi, officially celebrate its fifteenth anniversary. Working tirelessly to force out rogue and cowboy traders across Peterborough and surrounding areas, Safe Local Trades has received several awards for the community-focused service over the years. Eileen said, “The success of Safe Local Trades is due in the main to the fantastic members we have on board, all reliable, professional, and recommended. We have well over 17,500 genuine member reviews on the website, offering customers peace of mind.” And many of those members – including some who are themselves celebrating their own fifteenth anniversary with Safe Local Trades – recently met up to mark the occasion (pictured above). Eileen added, “As well as our work with the trades, much effort is placed on safeguarding the more vulnerable people in our communities, with working with the relevant agencies to offer advice on avoiding rogue traders, reporting doorstep crime and how to get involved with your local neighbourhood watch scheme.” Among those members to reap the benefits is Tony Bogusz of Style Home Improvements who was among the first traders to sign up to the scheme. Tony said, “Safe Local Trades has been a vital building block for our company over the last fifteen years. We have found it helps reassure customers that we are a reputable, trustworthy company, and with the help of reviews and photos, customers can decide if we are the company for them before contacting us. We proudly display our SLT logo with pride.” For more details, please visit www.safelocaltrades.com

PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

A TRIGGER...?

T

here are many reasons why it makes sense to have a custom desktop computer built for you, particularly if you are after a bargain or you’re an avid gamer/photographer/ architect/accountant etc. A custom-built computer gives you a rock-solid system, which is ready to go straight out of the box. Every one of my own PCs has been custom built... by my own fair hands of course!

The best reason to buy a custombuilt computer is that they are often cheaper. With pre-built computers, manufacturers often use cheaper parts such as cheap power supplies and slow hard drives. This in turn boosts their profits, giving you a pretty box with inferior insides. A custombuilt PC can indeed include premium components but without the mark-ups.

Most off-the-shelf computers come with pre-selected specifications and components; therefore, customers often need to choose between needs and price. Custom PCs, on the other hand, are flexible since you can choose your own quality components – motherboard, graphics card, storage devices, memory, processor and even the power supply.

In fact, many manufacturers won’t let you upgrade your prebuilt computer without voiding the warranty, meaning that you will need to buy a new one once it starts to slow down. However, with a custom-built PC, you can upgrade individual components (graphics card, memory, case, optical drive, power supply, processor, motherboard, mouse, monitor, keyboard, and speakers) as and when you need to.

Think Trigger from TV’s Only Fools and Horses – “I’ve had this broom for twenty years; it’s had seventeen new heads and fourteen new handles.” Which is exactly what a custom PC is all about - you don’t need to buy a new one, you simply remove the parts that are dated and put the upgrades in. Moreover, each part then has its own warranty. If you want to buy a generic PC from an appliance salesman who doesn’t know one end of a PC from a fridge, so be it. However, if you want it big, fast, small, very fast, flashy lights, ridiculously fast, matte black, phenomenally fast or just plain nippy, then custom is, and always has been, the way to go!

OUTSTANDING FENLAND VOLUNTEERS ARE HONOURED Dedicated volunteers who have helped nurture and transform Fenland over the past twelve months have been honoured. Fenland District Council held its annual celebration evening to recognise the positive impact the work of volunteers has on local communities. More than one hundred volunteers attended the event at March Braza Club with the highlight of the night being a special presentation with awards for the best voluntary projects over the past year. Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, who presented the awards, said: “The efforts of all our volunteer groups have once again been exceptional this year. Many groups go above and beyond litter picking, transforming neglected areas and buildings, enhancing wildlife, and promoting environmental sustainability. I can’t thank them all enough for everything they do to help make Fenland a better place to live, work and visit.” The evening also included a talk from Tony Cook, of Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), who spoke about how the trust can support groups with wildflower establishment, a supper by Glam Grazing by Gem and live music from Bar Six. Award winners included Friends of Station Road Cemetery, March, which was joint winner of the Best Promotional Project. The Friends of Station Road Cemetery won the award for its ongoing work to maintain the Victorian cemetery to

ensure it can be appreciated by everyone visiting to remember loved ones. Volunteers also held a guided tour of the cemetery to coincide with the national Heritage Open Days event in September. It was said that not only do events such as this enable members of the community to find out more about the cemetery, but they promote the fantastic work of the group too. Friends of March Railway Station shared the Best Clean Up award. The Friends of March Railway Station members, who actively work to renovate and preserve the disused platforms and community rooms at the station, won the award for their continued clean-up efforts this year. Among the activities were tackling the removal of ivy and undergrowth from around the buildings on platform 1 (disused side) and cleaning up the station stairs and disused track bed. Doddington Street Pride was named joint winner of the Best Nature Project after restoring the pond at Pocket Park. The group has done a lot of work to renovate and enhance the area and will continue to do so over the coming year. REMEMBRANCE EVENTS GO AHEAD IN MARCH Remembrance events will once again be held in March this month despite the ongoing town centre regeneration works. The annual Armistice Day Parade and a Remembrance Sunday Parade are still taking place but have changed location to enable them to go ahead safely and respectfully. The Armistice Day Parade on Saturday, November 11th will take place at St Peter’s Church in the High Street, using the original WW1 War Memorial, rather than at the War Memorial in the town centre. Armed Forces organisations’ standard bearers, escorts, veterans and civil dignitaries will muster at 10.50am, to the side of St Peter’s Church, to form the Armistice Parade. The Remembrance Sunday Parade on Sunday, November 12th will also start at St Peter’s Church and march to West End Park where a Drumhead Service will be held. The event begins at 9.30am with a muster at St Peter’s Church. A Service of Remembrance will be held at the church at 9.45am before the parade begins marching from the church to West End Park at 10.45am. At 10.55am, a Drumhead Service will take place near the band stand and a two-minute silence will be held at 11am, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. Parade Marshall, Lieutenant Colonel Nigel Spencer, said: “As long as we remember our fallen it doesn’t matter where we hold our Act of Remembrance. On behalf of the serving, veterans and fallen, I ask everyone to attend and embrace the Remembrance events we have planned and next year we will be back at the War Memorial in the town centre.”

CHARITY CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING Macmillan Cancer Support’s March & Chatteris committee is to hold a Christmas coffee morning on Thursday, November 30th at Doddington Village Hall. Entrance is priced £2, and includes coffee and biscuits. Cakes, various stalls and a raffle will be among the attractions at the event which starts at 10am and continues until 12 noon. TRIBUTES PAID TO ‘POP’ JOLLEY Councillors and council officers stood in silence as they paid tribute to a former member who has passed away. A minute’s silence was held at full council in memory of Paul (Pop) Jolley, a former member for Manea, and the civic flag lowered at the council’s offices at Fenland Hall, March, following his death as a mark of respect. The flag was then raised to full mast during the council meeting and then lowered again to half-mast where it remained until after Mr Jolley’s funeral. Council chairman Nick Meekins said: “Paul, or Pop as he was known, was an elected member of Fenland District Council between 1990 and 2004 and then again between 2011 and 2014. During his time with the council, Pop served on various committees including community, housing and property and policy and resources as well as the leisure services board. He was also the local member for Manea and his goal was to ‘get things done’. “He is remembered as someone who was always willing to help, who enjoyed supporting good causes and who had a heart of gold.” Local farmer Mr Jolley took a break from politics in 2004 but regained his Fenland seat when he was re-elected in 2011. He also accepted a role on the council’s cabinet as portfolio holder for the environment before becoming portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and markets in 2012. He also served as a parish councillor for Wimblington, where he will be remembered for his tireless work for the village, in particular the setting up of Parkfield playing field.

Food and drink from around the world is now available in March

J

&S World Food Supplies Ltd has opened to bring local people food and drink from all points of the compass including the Far East, Caribbean and Africa.

The business was the brainchild of March couple Sonia and Ken who decided to start the business after experiencing problems in locally sourcing food and drinks from around the world.

Ken said: “I have always been interested in food and in the past have thought about opening a Caribbean restaurant. I have experience working in catering and have always wanted to open a business like this. Anyone and everyone has come through our doors and we are really happy with how things have gone so far.” The couple plan to keep adding to the range of products and facilities at their new premises at Platinum Business Park, Thorby Avenue.

Sonia said: ”We always had to travel to Peterborough to get some specialist food, spices and ingredients that we wanted to have ourselves and after a neighbour, who is Lithuanian, said they too had problems sourcing the food they wanted themselves we realised that there was a local demand for someone to provide these hard-to-find foods.

Sonia said: “I would like to add a deli-type section and supply some fresh foods for people to enjoy on-site. We just want to give people in Fenland the food that they want.”

“We opened in September and have been really pleased with how things have gone so far. I am walking on Cloud Nine! The local population is becoming more multi-cultural; we have had customers from every background and have had great feedback.

You can find J&S World Food Supplies Ltd at Unit 7, Platinum Business Park, 59 Thorby Avenue, March PE15 0AR; Tel: (01773) 913471 or 0750 380 2511; Email: jandsworldfoodsupplies@outlook. com; Facebook. Opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday 7.30am-7.30pm; Sunday 9am-8pm.

“We want to make it more convenient for people to buy the food and ingredients they want locally. We have a wide range of things including Asian spices and ingredients, Caribbean spices and vegetables, African and US foods, plus Indian and Thai, Lithuanian, Polish and Romanian foods and we will add a Portuguese and Spanish selection soon.”

Discovering Magazines’ Sales Managers Paula Kirtland and Sallyanne Davis were lucky enough to sample World Food Supplies’ foods and drinks. Their verdict? Delicious...!

Ken, who has a West Indian father and Scottish mother, and Sonia, who has family members originating from Madeira and Montserrat, are keen cooks themselves.

ACTING AS AN ATTORNEY

Under a Lasting Power of Attorney

f you’ve been asked to act as an attorney under a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) you may have discovered that the LPA doesn’t give much guidance about what the role entails. The only relevant section is headed ‘Your Legal Rights and Responsibilities’ and this should be read by all the parties to an LPA.

This states that LPAs are governed by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA), with any regulations made under it and the MCA Code of Practice. The Code of Practice can be found at www.gov.uk/ opg/mca-code. However, as The Code of Practice runs to 301 pages, it is not entirely surprising that lots of attorneys haven’t read it. The Theory The LPA says that attorneys should follow the principles of the MCA which are: 1. Your attorneys must assume that you can make your own decisions unless it is established that you cannot do so. 2. Your attorneys must help you to make as many of your own decisions as you can. They must take all practical steps to help you to make a decision. They can only treat you as unable to make a decision if they have not succeeded in helping you make a decision through those steps. 3. Your attorneys must not treat you as unable to make a decision simply because you make an unwise decision. 4. Your attorneys must act and make decisions in your best interests when you are unable to make a decision. 5. Before your attorneys make a decision or act for you, they must consider whether they can make

the decision, or act in a way that is less restrictive of your rights and freedom but still achieves the purpose. In Practice The starting point is to always assume that someone can make their own decisions. If they are struggling, you can help by giving advice and information, but you shouldn’t tell them what to do. An LPA does not give an attorney the right to decide how someone’s affairs should be run if they are capable of making decisions for themselves. If an attorney doesn’t agree with the decision that’s been made or they think it is ridiculous this does not give them the right to take over decision making. Having a discussion about the implications of the decision might be wise, but the attorney shouldn’t overrule the decision. If an attorney does have to make decisions because the person can’t, then they should always consider what is best for that person and take into account the factors that they would consider. One issue that seems to crop up frequently is the ability of the attorney to make gifts. The rules about gifts are strict and limit them to specific occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, weddings, anniversaries or any other times when the family normally give presents or to charities the person favoured. The amount given should be reasonable, given the amount of money the person has. If you’d like to discuss how LPAs work in more detail, either if you are thinking of putting them in place or if you have been appointed as an attorney, please contact Cath Collins on (01945) 898090 or at cathcollins@vinelaw.co.uk

SPINDLE Euonymus europaeus

S

By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group

pindle is a small tree or large shrub, which is inconspicuous for most of the year. Its branches are thin and dangle around; it really is a ‘bad hair day’ tree. It also has an unpleasant cloying smell if crushed. It is fairly common and grows in most soils but it is scarce in northern England and Scotland.

The thin branches are very strong and the wood was first used in prehistoric times for making spindles to spin wool into yarn. The hard, smooth and nonsplintering nature of the wood made it ideal. Using their fingers, hand spinners would feed wool combed from a fleece towards the spindle and the spinning motion would draw the fibres into a tight thread. The spindle’s momentum would be maintained by putting a stone weight with a hole in on one end of the spindle and this would act like a flywheel keeping the spindle turning at a steady speed. The invention of the spinning wheel superseded this process. The wood was also used for knitting needles, toothpicks, clothes pegs and skewers giving it the alternative name of Skewer-wood. Spindle wood also makes excellent charcoal with a very even texture that is very popular with artists. In the winter, the spindle loses its leaves and looks very untidy. The small, short-stemmed, pointed leaves appear in opposite pairs in April and flowers follow in May. The flowers are very small with four greenish yellow petals that are pollinated by insects. Once seed has set a fruit develops, usually with four lobes, which slowly swells throughout the summer and early autumn. By September, the fruits begin to turn pink and, as the season advances, the spindle becomes something quite beautiful when the leaves turn red and the fruits turn vivid pink. Finally, the seedpods burst to reveal almost luminous orange fruits that have yellow seeds inside. This glory can be very short lived as birds love the orange flesh and they are soon all gone. Hopefully, the seeds are carried away to germinate elsewhere to produce 36

more trees. The fruits are powerful emetics and purgatives so are best left for the birds. Because of the spectacular autumn colour there are many varieties of Euonymus that have been cultivated for garden use. Next Gault Wood Work Party is Saturday, November 4th at 10am. If you'd like to support our work at the wood as a volunteer, please contact the Woodland Trust using this email: volunteering@woodlandtrust.org.uk Alternatively, you might like to support the Nature's Calendar project, which focuses on phenology, which is the study of plant and animal reaction to climate change. Local History

THE NENE PARADE

Chimney Collapse

A

By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum

three-storey building in Nene Parade belonged to Wisbech Dairy Company which had used it as a creamery. However, by late 1931 it was being used as a domestic dwelling.

In the autumn of 1931, a Mr Mann with his wife, young son and his housekeeper, Miss Durrant, were new tenants. His business was fried fish and chips presumably from the ground floor of the same building. The sleeping quarters were on the first floor and living rooms on the top floor. Concerns had been expressed about the massive chimney stack which protruded about fifteen feet above the roof. It had taken on a list similar to that of the famed 'Leaning Tower of Pisa'. On Sunday morning January 10th, 1932, a strong wind was blowing and at 5.45am Mr Mann was awake but still lay in his bed. Suddenly there was a tremendous crash and damage to the ceiling above his head was apparent. He had strong suspicions as to what had happened and with great difficulty, he wormed his way through the door on the top landing into his living quarters. He

was amazed for nothing had prepared him for the great destruction that greeted his eyes. The room was open to the sky as the roof had crashed down bringing with it all but a small part of the ceiling. Most of the furniture was buried beneath a huge pile of rafters, bricks, and rubble. Although pictures still hung on the walls, a table at the end was smashed in two and very few articles escaped damage. The damage had been caused by the chimney that had broken off between two and three feet from its base in the high wind. Had anyone been in the room, there would have been terrible consequences. Although Mr Mann and his family were forced to seek temporary accommodation, his business was able to continue unaffected.

Talk Money Week: November 6th-10th 2023

Five Reasons to Talk

About Money

By Lin Stanton, Fenland Debt Centre Manager, Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

There are all sorts of reasons why we don’t like talking about money, from being embarrassed to simply just ‘being British’. But being open about our finances can make a difference to a whole range of areas in our lives.

T

he Money and Pensions Service’s annual Talk Money Week is taking place in November. To mark the occasion, we want to share five reasons why talking about money can be beneficial.

It lowers stress levels Speaking about a problem can help to lift a weight off your mind because you’re no longer carrying the burden all by yourself. This certainly applies when it comes to money troubles. What may appear to be a huge obstacle often feels more achievable once you’ve shared your concerns with a trusted friend or family member.

It strengthens relationships Keeping money troubles secret from your other half or someone you share financial responsibilities with can be damaging to your relationship. On the other hand, 48

sharing openly as soon as things become a problem helps to build trust and unity as you can tackle it together.

It helps you access support Discussing money worries can help you find out where there is free help available in your local community, as others share what they know. If you’re struggling in debt or need support with managing your money, visit moneyhelper.org.uk or see capuk. org to find out more about the face-to-face services Christians Against Poverty (CAP) offers.

It makes you more financially resilient Having regular conversations about money can help you stay focused on your financial goals and gain useful skills from others. This can help you to increase your savings, reduce debt and bounce back more easily after any financial knocks.

D I S C O V E R I N G March

It can impact future generations There’s so much power in speaking with your children or other young people in your family about money. Share your experiences and empower them to feel confident in managing their money. Apps like GoHenry are a useful tool to teach kids practical money management skills that they will inevitably use when they’re older. Talk Money Week is an initiative set up by the Money and Pensions Service and this year is happening on November 6th-10th. Find out more at maps.org.uk/talk-money-week Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity working with more than 800 affiliated churches to deliver debt help, budgeting guidance, support to find work, life skills education and more. NEW TO VIEW IN NOVEMBER

The Marvels

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

This November has some amazing blockbusters making their way to the big screen. On the 10th we will see that Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the supreme intelligence in The Marvels. Next, it’s the prequel we have all been waiting for, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes on November 17th.

Napoleon

Wish

film is helmed by Oscar-winning director Chris Buck (Frozen, Frozen 2) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (Raya and the Last Dragon). This month is jam-packed with amazing Live Arts content such as Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake on the 5th. Then we have the re-release of Jack Absolute Flies Again on the 6th. Next it’s off to the Royal Ballet for Don Quixote on the 7th. But if you would prefer a musical then we have you covered with Heathers: The Musical on the 8th. For all you rock fans out there, for one night only we have Welcome to The Darkness on the big screen on the 9th. Next, it’s another rerelease with Skylight on November 16th. And finally, on November 23rd we have Romeo and Juliet. Our ACCESSIBLE screenings are something we want to make sure everyone knows about! Our autismfriendly screenings happen every Sunday morning and these screenings are designed to help people with sensory sensitivity enjoy the cinema. We have subtitled showings on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and we also have Fidelio’s for both hearing impaired and visually impaired users.

We are also bringing back some of Ridley Scott’s classics for our latest Through The Lens season; wrapping up in time for his new masterpiece on November 22nd – Napoleon. This spectacle-filled action epic that details the rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix. Then at the end of the month we have Disney’s Wish hitting our screens on November 24th. The

This month’s Dementia Screening will be Father of the Bride starring Elizabeth Taylor. Our dementiafriendly screenings have no adverts or trailers, and the lighting remains slightly raised throughout the film. Although these screenings are particularly designed for people living with dementia, they are open to the general public too. Thank you to Iceland Foods who kindly provided the light refreshments served during these screenings. Please be aware that pastoral care is not provided at these screenings and that a friend, family member or carer must also be in attendance.
