Introduction

Welcome to Your July Issue. As parents, I don’t think we ever lose that watchful eye of ours keeping tabs on what our children are doing; from them staying safe on the bouncy castle, through checking their homework diaries, to waiting to hear they’re back safe from a night out at university. My own “watchful eye”, however, had a tear or two in it recently as Ed, our youngest son, took the plunge, (literally!) Don’t panic, he’s not getting wed! No, Ed’s plunge came as he leapt out of a plane to raise money for charity. “Proud” and “relieved” hardly do it justice! High summer is now upon us and the school holidays are in sight. Make the most of what our local communities are offering, by checking out our “What’s on section”, and let’s hope this warm weather stays with us just a bit longer!

Claire x

One of the many fascinating things about my role as Group Editor, as I begin my fifth year in the chair, is that I get the chance to visit places which hold special memories from a much earlier time. Why most of them happen to be pubs, I can’t imagine! This month, the Waggon and Horses in Langtoft comes under the spotlight. It was my one-time local, as my first steps on the property ladder in 1981, had me living nearby in a bungalow costing £14,750! Also looking back this month will be Claire Lockett, our travel guru, as her Travel Counsellors business celebrates a quarter century of making holidaymakers’ dreams come true. This year also sees the brilliant Stamford Shakespeare Company reaching their half century, and who we feature this month. Enjoy the words … and brace yourselves for the school holidays –Yee Ha!

Prepare to Bare!

fter covering ourselves up over the winter the thought of exposing certain body parts in the summer can fill some of us with dread. Excess weight, cellulite, skin conditions and slack or saggy skin can take the fun out of enjoying the sunny days ahead. This month, Claire from Renu gives her top tips on how you ‘prepare to bare’ this summer Exfoliate – Collagen plumps the skin and gives it elasticity. We lose about 1.5% of collagen every year from our twenties. Regular exfoliation encourages the skin to produce collagen and new, fresh skin to reach the surface. We would recommend Decleor 1000 grain exfoliator: £26.00. Exercise – Muscles create tone in the body and they degenerate over time. Regular exercise will increase your metabolic rate to aid weight

loss, increase circulation to improve skin tone and cellulite, and give you a burst of energy and confidence! Thirty minutes, three times per week in our ladies gym gives an average

loss of six pounds and eight inches. Hydrate – Dehydrated skin means wrinkles and orange-peel skin. Hydrate from the inside with plenty of water, and hydrate from the outside with a good quality moisturiser daily. This will keep the elasticity in your skin and mean you keep your summer colour longer. We would recommend Decleor satin softening dry oil: £32.00. Detox – Dairy, wheat, sugar and caffeine can all contribute to skin conditions and/or bloating. Become your own body’s detective and see how it reacts when you take one of these out of your diet for a week. You may be surprised with the results!

The Home of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) by Matt Weston

Why should you take notice? You have already discovered the joys of exercise and are discovering the euphoric physical, mental and social benefits of moving and improving your body and mindset. Or have you? Possibly not. And with not a second of prejudgement, or forming of opinion, there must be a reason why. • You are unaware of why exercise is important • You are aware but very busy / You don’t have time • You are motivated but apprehensive • You don’t know where to go

1:1 so, for example, one minute’s work, followed by one minute’s rest. But typically, the rest component is much reduced. After all, HIIT is about pushing yourself and making your body find different sources of energy to keep you moving. The work period should be short enough to allow you to aim for absolute maximum exertion, but long enough to be a true physical test. At Empire HIIT classes, we will often use 50 second’s work with 15-20 seconds of rest. A class will be a maximum of 45 minutes in length, but often as short as only 30 minutes, and would typically consist of 12 or more different ‘stations’.

• You don’t know when • You think you’re incapable or lacking knowledge

For example: the first 4 of 12 might be: The truth is, nothing worth doing is easy. Nothing worth having comes without work.

1 – Jumping squats (50 seconds work) : 20 seconds rest.

But your health, you cannot disagree, is the single most important thing worth having. The single most important thing worth working for. Without it, we have nothing.

2 – Kettlebell swings (50 seconds work) : 20 seconds rest.

And what if I said I could prove to you that the work part is short, sharp, informative, suitable for all levels of fitness, experience and knowledge and will be an uplifting, euphoric and life-affirming experience?

4 – Rowing machine (50 seconds work) : 20 seconds rest.

Empire is a proving ground for turning words into action, and action into results.

3 – Press-ups (50 seconds work) : 20 seconds rest.

There are a million and more possible variations and combinations. And you would go on for at least another eight stations before we rest for three minutes and do it all again.

It means in a very short period of time, (so if you are busy, we start to remove time barriers immediately!) you will complete several ‘intervals’ of work, followed by short, quick periods of rest and recovery.

All stations/exercises are demonstrated at the beginning by the instructor after a short warm up and are intentionally simple. This means complicated thought processes are removed and you can focus on the work. Furthermore, on the second ‘circuit’ of the HIIT class, you are now already an expert and can work even harder the second time round.

The work-to-rest ratio is infinitely variable but typically the most rest you should receive would see the ratio being

This is where it gets clever, effective and where you start to see why HIIT is so addictive.

So, what is HIIT? High Intensity Interval Training.

Health 1 – As Empire HIIT is gym-based, you are learning new things in a gym environment that you can take away and use yourself in your own time when it suits you. 2 – Your only real responsibility is to show up and work! We will provide the structure and expertise. 3 – You realise everyone is in the same boat, regardless of experience or fitness level. At any given time, every participant is at a different stage or station of the circuit and is working hard by their own terms while everyone else is doing the same.

I won’t get too technical, but this means for the next sixteen or so hours, your body is repairing, recovering and looking to return itself to a state of ‘homeostasis’, (its normal, resting level of metabolic function), after you have stressed and tested it so effectively in your HIIT session. This recovery itself uses calories. So, let’s assume the calories burned on average for each person in the class over 30 minutes are 300 calories. Not only is that a superb calorific deficit for 30 minutes of your day, (only 2% of a 24-hour day), you could benefit with the ‘after-burn’ effect to the tune of another 45 - 50 calories. Do that three times per week and your increased calorific deficit from your 90 minutes work alone would be 1,050 calories! A pound of fat in calorific terms is recognised to be around 3,500 calories.

There’s no comparison or ‘test’ other than that you give yourself. You are your only competitor while the euphoric atmosphere provides the motivational fuel. 4 – The science! Speaking of fuel, simply put, this is the real and fascinating benefit of HIIT. The high intensity working periods will see your heart rate up at 85% - 100% of your maximum working heart rate. During the 15-20 second rest and recovery period, your heart rate will still likely be at 40% - 50% of your personal maximum rate. During the lung-busting, muscle-burning high intensity intervals, your body is using several different energy systems, i.e. Anaerobic, Aerobic and Lactate… one for another detailed article. Your body is finding any and every way to source fuel to keep your muscles moving, by borrowing energy from here and there. This means after your HIIT session of say 30 minutes, you will receive benefit long after the actual event.

So, over two weeks, if you did three 30-minute HIIT sessions a week and reduced your daily calorie intake by only 100 calories, you could lose a pound of fat. That’s a significant achievement and will be reflected in the way you look and feel. Suddenly, progress is a fact, not a mythical aspiration reserved for those who know or those who have always been in gyms. Apprehension and fear is conquered by action. Action is a catalyst for change.

Half an hour after, you will probably feel very hungry as your body looks to replace glycogen stores, (glycogen is a substance deposited in your bodily tissues as a store of carbohydrates). Eating is always a joy, so here’s your window to enjoy the right kind of foods with less guilt. You are now eating for a reason as well as a want.

Change is exciting. Liberating. It’s progress. Let us help you ‘HIIT’ your targets. It starts with a single class. There are now five Empire HIIT Classes every week on the class timetable.

Then there is the magic of EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption).

Opportunity knocks.

A Visit to the Osteopath - Wise Words of Comfort by Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice

F

or many, the unknown can be daunting and become a reason not to do something. Each year, more and more people decide to see an osteopath, but what exactly happens there? Please note that the title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law, and it is illegal for anyone to call themselves an osteopath, unless they are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety. Our licence to practise needs to be renewed each year.

Typically, a first appointment will last between forty-five minutes and an hour. We ask in confidence about your general health, any medication being prescribed and your medical history, including any previous episodes, illnesses or operations. You need not be alone, if the company of another person would benefit you in any way. Next, we look at how you move; asking you to actively perform certain movements typically while standing, and we observe the effect on your condition, posture and mobility. Then, whilst lying on the examination couch, we look at your passive movements where we assess the health of your joints, ligaments and tissues by using a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation. We do this to check the range and quality of their movements and often more importantly, how they interact together. Sometimes, we need to perform other special tests such as testing your reflexes or taking your blood pressure. By combining all of this information, we then formulate a diagnosis which we will explain to you. If, for some reason, you needed someone more specialist, or we suspect a more serious

condition that osteopathic treatment is not suitable for, we would always refer you with a letter to someone appropriate, which may be your G.P. or local hospital. Before treatment begins, we discuss the treatment benefits, any risks, the likely expectations, how many sessions are needed and your consent for us to treat you. Treatment is hands-on, and involves skilled manipulation of the spine and joints, and massage of soft tissues. The type and intensity of treatment will vary depending on you and your tolerances, so it remains comfortable. Finally, we will tell you about any self-help measures and advice on exercise or stretching, to assist your recovery and prevent recurrence or worsening of symptoms. The Wellhead practice was the first of its kind in Bourne and is now into our sixth year. We have a team of nine practitioners; covering six different areas of expertise from Osteopathy and sport massage to Chiropody, Ear syringing and Hypnotherapy.

Your Health

Insomnia - Hypnotherapy Can Help by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

B

eing a hypnotherapist involves working with all kinds of people, from young children and men to women of all ages. The list of issues and complaints that I have worked with is vast, but they all have one thing in common. When I sit with a new client and talk through their current situation, I always talk about sleep. You can pretty much guarantee that they either don’t get enough sleep, struggle to get to sleep or have problems staying asleep. When we don’t get enough quality sleep, this can have a huge detrimental effect on how we feel,

and can contribute to an array of problems. Lack of sleep increases the levels of cortisol in our blood stream which has a negative effect on our body. For example, difficulty losing weight, low mood and depression, lack of motivation and exhaustion and, of course, increased stress levels. Being able to get between seven to eight hours sleep per night is the recommended average, but with today’s busy lifestyles, technology, work, family and stress, this can lead to people getting less than five hours per night. Having regular early nights, turning

off technology an hour before bed and having a clean, relaxing sleep space can all help towards getting better quality sleep. If you find the bedtime routine a struggle; if you have a child who refuses to go to bed; or if you find yourself counting sheep until the early hours of the morning, then regular sessions of hypnotherapy can get that much-needed sleep back, regulate stress levels and make for a happier, more motivated you. Council Success at Lincolnshire Environmental Awards Market Deeping Town Council entered the Rectory Paddock on Church Street into the Lincolnshire Environmental Awards 2018. This was a piece of land that the Council purchased approximately twenty years ago as a meadow with trees and a small natural pond. The area became neglected and the pond overgrown with little water, so a restoration plan was begun in 2012 and native shrubs were encouraged. For the last three years, a small team of volunteers has helped

once a week to maintain this piece of land. They have laid three boundary hedges, planted two hundred trays of wildflowers and persuaded the Town Council to purchase a flail to cut and collect the grass twice a year. The blanket weed has been conquered and the pond is now crystal-clear spring water, covered with several varieties of lilies. In 2016, a swift tower with twentyone boxes and space for bats was installed, with solar-powered bird calls being emitted. The competition consisted of three rounds which began with writing a small article on the project. A site visit was then made by the judges and an eight minute presentation had to be made to the judges, followed by questions. Market Deeping Town Council had entered the ‘Community Award’ section and it was with much pleasure that the Council

discovered they had won this section, against stiff competition, and were presented with a glass award and certificate. To be their section winner was a great achievement and shows how others can appreciate the work done over the years on this small piece of land. The area is open to the public and has a diverse amount of plants and insects as well as being a lovely place to sit on a summer’s day, so do come and see the beautiful area that has been provided by the Town Council.

Choir leader wanted in Stamford, South Lincolnshire Woven Chords is a mixed-voice community choir of 23 years standing and, due to our present director moving from the area, is looking for a new musical director, preferably to start in September 2018. Currently the choir has over 30 attending members and follows the “Natural Voice Practitioners” ethos - no auditions, no music scores, “if you can speak you can sing:” with the emphasis on having fun through singing. Woven Chords sings in the a cappella (unaccompanied) 14

The choir has built up quite a substantial local following over the years for its energetic and enthusiastic concerts. Choir members range in age from 20s to 70s and form an incredibly friendly, supportive group who love singing together. Woven Chords is supported by South Kesteven District Council

The Little Sewing Shop Joanne Rossell speaks fondly of how she has been thirty years in the sewing trade and for the past twenty, providing a muchneeded service to the good folk of the Deepings and beyond. In April this year, she felt that she had outgrown her premises in The Precinct and so made the move to 5 Market Place, and since then business has just boomed. Joanne’s “team” comprises mum, Vicky, (who looks after frontof-house affairs), and Mal who, alongside Joanne, bring their skills and vast experience of needlecraft to bear in a wide range of textiles work. The Little Sewing Shop specialise in bridal and evening wear, with the recent ‘Prom’ season proving to be a very busy time for them. Any alterations, to both ladies and gentlemen’s clothing, can be considered, whilst Joanne also has a selection of accessories, haberdashery items and a few dresses for sale in the shop. Since moving in April, Joanne has been delighted to see lots of new faces come to see what she can offer, whilst her many long-standing and loyal regulars, (some from as far afield as Cambridge and Oakham), continue to visit, knowing that reliability, expertise and competitive pricing will always make the journey worthwhile.

Will you be a ‘Blue Tin Hero’ for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice? Every year, thousands of people across the region choose to pop loose change into charity collection boxes in pubs, shops and community hubs rather than weigh down their purses and pockets. What might only be a few pennies to each individual adds up for the charity. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice

in Peterborough receives, on average, £706 every month from collection tins. That’s enough to pay for a hospice nurse for more than five days. But the hospice needs help – in the shape of ‘Blue Tin Heroes’ – to round up tins, deliver them to Thorpe Hall in Longthorpe, and to distribute empty tins around the region. Community fundraising officer, Sharon Baker, said: “We are really grateful to all the venues across the region which have one of our collection tins – the contents really do add up to make a difference here at Thorpe Hall. Now we need volunteers who are willing to use their community connections and knowledge to pick up full tins, distribute empty ones to venues which already support us, and identify places

which might like to have one of our collection tins at the till, on the counter or on the bar.” The team at Thorpe Hall Hospice are particularly seeking ‘Blue Tin Heroes’ in Stamford, Market Deeping and the surrounding villages and would love your help. To find out more about becoming a ‘Blue Tin Hero’ please call 01733 225999 or e-mail Thorpe.fundraising@ sueryder.org.

Deepings Rotary Runs A beautiful sunny day with light winds attracted an entry of over 300 for the 32nd running of the annual Charity Fun Run and Road Race, organised by the Rotary Club of The Deepings on Sunday May 20th. Over 100 runners of all ages tackled the 3 km course, while nearly 200 took on the more serious challenge of the accurately measured and AAAlicensed 10 km event. The Deepings is the third of the local spring treble of 10 km races, following similar events at Eye and Langtoft in the two previous weeks. All of these races are particularly popular with both local runners and ones from further afield, because they all have fast, level courses, giving serious runners the chance to put up personal best times which several competitors did here. Both the men’s winner, Brian Corleys of 16

D I S C O V E R I N G

local club Bushfield Joggers, and the ladies’ winner, Maggie Skinner of Peterborough Athletics Club, came within a few minutes of breaking the course record. Race organiser, Joe Piercy, said that the Rotary Club was particularly grateful to Piper Physiotherapy of Market Deeping and the Spinroom Studio of Deeping St James for sponsoring the races; to the Deepings Leisure Centre for making their excellent changing facilities available to the runners; and to the local Inner Wheel ladies and the Rugby Club for providing refreshments and glasses of something long and cool for both runners and spectators. “The Rotary club always enjoys organising events which are as popular as this,” he said, “especially when they also let us raise money for Rotary charities.”

Dare-devil Ed’s Sky-dive for a Worthy Cause To leap out of an aircraft the day after your last GCSE exam might not be on the top of the wish-list for most teenagers – (the day before your first one maybe!) However, when you feel so strongly about a volunteering organisation, whose work is aimed at supporting youngsters just like yourself and your friends, then, for sixteen-year-old, Bourne Academy student, Ed SabertonWard, it was just a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

of volunteers and who employ trained counsellors to support young people, aged between 11-16 years, facing emotional difficulties. Common problems which they encounter include family and relationship difficulties, issues regarding loneliness and anxiety, problems associated with low self-esteem and bullying, self-harm, abuse, addiction, distress through bereavement or loss, depression and difficulty with decision-making.

So, on Saturday June 16th, at Sibson Airfield, Ed undertook the perilous journey from uncertainty, through apprehension to eventual, total exhilaration, as he leapt from 10,000 feet, in order to raise over £500 in sponsorship. After his sky-dive, Ed was, for once, almost stumped for words as he tried to express just how brilliant the whole experience had been, (even the bit when his

As a nation of garden lovers, we Brits are increasingly turning our outdoor spaces into extensions of our homes; cosy corners to relax in, barbecue areas for alfresco dining, and play dens for the children. Splashing out on making our gardens look great can mean spending a small fortune on lighting, furniture, ornaments, plants and even wall art. But while most of us ensure our house alarm is switched on, doors locked and a light left on when the house is empty, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? Brighter days and longer weekends present more opportunity for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, allowing the children to play outdoors and spending time with friends and family … and a chance for thieves to strike! According to the Crime Prevention website, garden crime has risen to about a million reports a year. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything from the garden, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond and even newly-laid turf! However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against greenfingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty. 12/01/2018 11:52 • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed, (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes). 10:05 • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcome activity from your home. • Install some sensory/outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security, or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend, lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group, where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. Find your nearest group https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/ When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. Your Garden

JuLY Gardening Tips July tends to be one of the driest months, but nothing is certain with the weather nowadays! Make sure you keep crops well-watered. It is better to water them frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting. Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable, as the temperatures are lower and the sun not so strong, and spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds. Also, hoeing is good for water retention as it breaks up the soil and it also keeps weeds at bay. All of the hard work of the previous months should be paying off now, and each visit to the allotment or vegetable patch should see you returning with fresh vegetables or fruit. It is time to harvest garlic and onions: a few days before you do this, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry spell, lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun to dry them out, as the more thoroughly they are dried out, the longer they will keep. Also those wonderful tasting early potatoes can be lifted: what better than freshly dug potatoes with mint, butter and a summery salad?

Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch:•

Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm/6” deep, and drop the leek into the hole. Water it in and the job’s done. You don’t need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain. The reason you plant in a hole is to blanch the stem.

Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also check the potato plants and earth-up if necessary to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light.

• When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners, or use them to produce new plants. • Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed. • Don’t forget to nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes, they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. • Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight, and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year, as they may be harbouring disease. • Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping. • Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons. • Continue sowing salad crops. Take time to sit back, admire your hard work over the past few months … and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Happy harvesting!

Your Finances

Is a High Street Bank Savings Account Really the Way to Go? - by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

F

or years now, most people would say that the best way to save was to put money into a savings account provided by one of the many high street banks we have in the UK. Primarily, there are two types of high street savings accounts, Instant Access and Restricted Access. An Instant Access Savings Account is exactly what it says on the tin; a savings account you can access instantly. However, over the past ten to fifteen years, we have seen interest rates drop to a nominal rate and, as a result, you will be lucky to find an Instant Access savings account that offers interest rates above 1.00%. Therefore, your money is actually losing purchasing power over the long-term as the growth is below inflation. A Restricted Access Savings Account will offer better interest rates, but you must adhere to certain restrictions. These can be putting in a specific amount each month, not withdrawing the money over a certain period of time, and so on. They may offer better interest rates but remove the accessibility you might

require in case of an emergency. Restricted Access savings accounts also often struggle to offer interest rates that are equal to or greater than inflation as well. However, there is a third option available to you! You can open an Individual Savings Account, often referred to as an ISA. ISAs offer you the chance to save money with a realistic opportunity to see real growth above inflation, via a Stocks and Shares ISA; although there is no guarantee you will get back what you invest. Or, you can invest directly into a Cash ISA which often offers a higher level of growth than a high street bank savings account, and you are able to have instant access, should you need it. Another bonus of using ISAs is that you’re allowed to invest up to £20,000.00 each tax year and any growth is tax-free! If you would like to explore the possibility of moving your savings into an ISA, then please contact us to arrange a FREE initial discussion with one of our advisers.

Report Reveals Negative Views on Growing Older by Nick Ash, Managing Director

Recent research has revealed that so-called “millennials”, (those born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s), are the most likely to feel negative about growing older. The report on ageism, published by The Royal Society for Public Health in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, found that many see the ageing process in a negative light, taking the view that it’s a period of decline. It also showed that many see an element of inevitability in growing older, with 30% of those asked taking the view that being lonely is just something that happens in later life. The report also showed that those aged between eighteen and thirty-four felt the most negatively towards growing older, with around a quarter believing that growing unhappy or depressed is normal for older people. Two-fifths of the group also felt that dementia is an unavoidable part of the ageing process.

But it doesn’t have to be like that… Like most things in life, it all comes down to good planning. Dementia is a big issue, with one in fourteen elderly people living with the condition. But treatment is getting better and breakthroughs are happening almost every month. The later years can be some of the most enjoyable, spending time with friends, families and having the choices to do what you want in life. But, of course, these thing only happen if you plan early and look after your health from an early age. If you want more information on planning for later life or assistance with putting your plans in place, we are happy to help. Call Will & Probate Services on 01778 382723.

get a good lather, which can aggravate and irritate the skin. As well as being abrasive, hard water doesn’t necessarily wash the entire residue off. This residue can be left on the skin which can worsen dry skin conditions. The NHS website lists “water especially hard, chalky water or heavy chlorinated water” as a common irritant of contact dermatitis.

We can supply all types of water softener and other related drinking water products. We also supply and deliver salt for all types of water softeners and we are especially proud of the personal service we offer our customers. What are the downsides of having hard water? New research has revealed the link between hard water and skin conditions like eczema. Scientists at the University of Sheffield and King’s College London have proved that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema. The study, which we were asked to fund, proves what we’ve known here for years; when it comes to skin conditions, softened water can make all the difference. Minerals in hard water, the same culprits behind limescale, were shown to make skin more sensitive to irritation, but when researchers used softened water in their study, they found that softened water could reduce these negative effects. It could even lower the risk of eczema developing in the first place. For people living with chronic skin conditions, this research could be a game-changer, especially when one in five children is affected by eczema. With hard water you have to use more product to

How does a water softener work? In brief, it is designed to remove calcium (scale) and magnesium (scum) from hard water. They are installed at the point the water supply enters the premises and treat the whole house, therefore resulting in: reducing the cost of your soap/ detergent, removing existing limescale, preventing the build-up of limescale in your hot water system as well as around your taps and reducing your fuel costs and heating system costs. The 9 wonders of having a water softener: Bigger bubble baths, Cheaper bills , Fewer products, Perfect cups of tea, Glossier hair, Longer-lasting appliances, Shinier home, Softer skin, Better for the environment. Travel Counsellors – Twenty-five Fabulous Years

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

July 2018 marks Clare Lockett’s 25th anniversary in the travel industry, and the twelfth anniversary of her starting her own travel business with Travel Counsellors.

From humble beginnings in 1993 as a ‘YTS’ at Thomas Cook, Stamford, Clare went on to the larger Peterborough store, before working on tailor making bespoke longhaul itineraries. In 1999 she then moved into Operations and became a 24 hour Duty Manager. With the wealth of knowledge and experience she had gained within the years in retail sales, the Tour Operator Tailor Made Department, the Duty Office and in customer relations, it gave Clare the confidence and experience needed to set up and run her own business. So, on July 10th 2006, Clare started her new venture … and ‘Clare Lockett - Travel Counsellors’ was born!

have actively sourced and forged excellent relationships with partners overseas who are able to help them uniquely personalise holiday experiences. This allows them complete flexibility, with every trip intelligently designed just for you. Clare Lockett- Travel Counsellors have a range of incredible experiences from which the independent traveller can choose. From walks with elephants, to intimate special interest talks, private guides, and lessons in traditional dance, or carving your own devil masks, they take today’s travellers on a whirlwind journey - creating experiences that allow you not simply to look in from the outside, but to really get beneath the surface, giving you an insight into such fascinating destinations.

Clare says, “It was a leap of faith, with a toddler, busy family life and no customers. Twelve years on and all I can say is WOW ... every year it continues to grow from strength to strength and, in 2017, the team grew further when we welcomed Lianne in November.” (Lianne brings over fifteen years of experience in the travel industry, with ten years in the cruise sector).

Customer service is at the very heart of their business. They promise that you will receive the highest level of personal service, alongside 100% honest and impartial advice, when you enquire and book with them. They take the time to really get to know you and your wish-list, which means they can tailor your perfect holiday.

Since the business began, it has evolved to embrace the growing demands of clients who are looking for more adventure, culture and bespoke itineraries, not just an ‘off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all’ package. Travel Counsellors

History

Discovering . . . Listed buildings

Rex Needle

T

he hallmark of our heritage in towns and villages across England is the ancient buildings that have survived the centuries and although many have been destroyed, we now protect those we have left through a system of listing. As the term implies, a listed building is actually added to a list, namely the government’s Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest where it is classified according to its importance as Grade I, Grade II* or Grade II, such buildings being protected by law and consent is required from the local authority before any alterations are made to the interior or exterior, extensions added or even demolition considered, in order that it can be protected for future generations. The Deepings have their share of such buildings, most importantly the churches such as St Guthlac’s at Market Deeping, the Priory Church at Deeping St James and St Andrew’s at West Deeping, which in view of their age and architectural importance are all classified as Grade I. But by far the most numerous are the non-secular buildings which are mainly Grade II yet equally interesting because they reflect the way of life of past generations and often a domestic architectural style that has remained largely unchanged.

44

D I S C O V E R I N G

T H E

Deepings

There are 80 such buildings within the Market Deeping area alone including the Old Rectory dating from the 14th century which is Grade I with many Grade II listed properties such as the almshouses on the west side of Church Street, the old antique shop across the road, the public library in High Street and the Deeping Stage in the Market Place, while among the most interesting listings in Deeping St James is the village cross and lock-up in Eastgate which attracts the attention of so many visitors. Listing, however, is not merely confined to buildings but can also apply to other structures such as the Deeping Gate bridge (1651) which is Grade II listed, Market Deeping town hall (1825), a tombstone (1777) near the south wall in the graveyard at St Andrew’s Church, West Deeping, several 19th century cast iron mile posts situated around the district and even the K6 red telephone kiosk (1935) designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the market place at Market Deeping. All reflect life as it was when they were built or erected and it is only right that these survivors from the past should be preserved for future generations. Archive photograph by Rex Needle from 2009 of The Laurels, Market Deeping, built as a private house in 1800, now Grade II listed and used as a care home for the elderly. juLY 2018

Slash each breast in a couple of places, then place in a dish with the olive oil, half the lemon zest and juice, and the garlic. Season well and leave to marinate for 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the mint sprig and blanch the broad beans for 2-3 minutes until tender. Drain, discard the mint and refresh under cold water, then drain again. You can slip each broad bean from its outer shell, if you like. Whisk the rest of the lemon zest and juice with the extra-virgin olive oil, season and drizzle over the beans. Crumble in the feta and stir it through, along with the mint leaves. Set aside. Heat a frying pan over a high heat and quickly brown the chicken breasts until both sides are golden, then transfer to a roasting tin and roast for 5-10 minutes until cooked. Serve immediately, sliced in half, with the minted broad beans and feta.

The Waggon and Horses at Langtoft – Increasingly Popular Restaurant, but still a Traditional Village Pub A recent refurbishment of Langtoft’s Waggon and Horses has brought huge improvements to this pub which sits alongside the A15, just north of Market Deeping, and at the heart of a large and active community. Not only has the capacity of the restaurant area almost doubled to forty covers, the owners, Richard and Deborah Moore, can now operate from a much larger, professional kitchen, which can only be seen as good news to the ever-increasing number of diners and drinkers who are calling to see just how things have changed recently. The Waggon and Horses is the first hostelry that Richard and Deborah have owned and run together; Richard prepares the menus and is head chef, whilst his wife deals with all ‘front of house’ affairs. Alongside these roles, there is the small matter of bringing up three children, aged eight, six and four, so ‘dull moments’ just do not exist! Other staff include Timothy Smith, (ex-Wishing Well), as Second Chef, as well as a number of young, part-time and enthusiastic, bar staff and waiters. Richard and Deborah have been in the licensed trade for many years, both at Oakham for a while. Richard was also lease-holder at Baston’s Spinning Wheel, (before it became The White Horse), and he has also worked at The Wishing Well in Dyke, so a combined forty years of experience between them means they know how to run a successful house – and that is just what the Waggon and Horses seems to be becoming. The emphasis since the Moores arrived in 2015 has turned more towards the restaurant arm of the business. They were the first serious food operators there, who had wide experience of the catering industry, after many years of it being just a “drinkers’ local”. That said, however, Deborah is quick to add that there are still plenty of people who frequent the bar area, whilst the presence of the thriving darts, dominoes and crib teams confirms the opinion that here is still a traditional village pub, at the heart of the community. What has been really 2 46

D I S C O V E R I N G

encouraging, Deborah adds, is how several of the local ‘drinkers’ are now bringing in outsiders to their ‘refurbed local’, proud to show it off and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time. The menus have been created to offer an eclectic mix of modern British favourites, with a firm foundation of local, fresh and seasonal ingredients, sourced from dedicated and discerning suppliers, such as Alec Day in Bourne, for meat and fish, whilst Gary Houldershaw at Premier Produce can be relied upon for quality fruit and vegetables.

School News Market Deeping Community Primary School

The Deepings School - STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE WORLD OF WORK!

The children at Market Deeping Community Primary School have been building links with the local area. The school is getting involved not just in events in Market Deeping, but also in building awareness of communities around the world. Recent visitors include Mr Gary Ridgway, who leads the local Beaver Pack. He talked to the children about the scouting movement, and all children who are involved in the association came in their uniforms.

Leading up to the half-term break, Year 10 students took part in a two-week period of work experience, where they had opportunities to experience the world of work through a superb range of placements, both locally and further afield.

During the last few weeks of the Summer Term, the school will be having a raft building day in preparation for the Deepings Raft Race, and children will be taking part in the Deepings Carnival. Children in Key Stage 1 have been learning about festivals and celebrations around the world, and the carnival will give them a great opportunity to celebrate their learning. The school is holding its first outdoor Summer Fair for many years, on Friday July 6th, from 5pm, and has a farming theme, to recognise the work of the surrounding countryside. The Exotic Pet Refuge will be coming along, as the School Council have supported them as their charity this year. Headteacher, Mark Ratchford, said: “We are putting the community at the heart of our school. It is important that children understand their place in the community and the role they play so that, as they grow, they will show respect and support for their local community. It has been great to welcome people from the area into school and support local charities with the fundraising that the children do.”

Marks & Spencer, Park Air, Tesco, Peterborough United FC, John Lewis, Bauer Media, solicitors, architects, vets and local primary and nursery schools were just some of the 200+ organisations who provided a placement to help students develop their employability skills and experience a taste of what it is really like to go out to work! A number of students have been offered Saturday and holiday jobs, and some may have the opportunity to join an apprenticeship programme following their exams next year. The school received excellent feedback from the organisations involved, and many remarked on the outstanding contribution students had made during the fortnight. Mrs Linda Taylor, who manages the work experience programme, said: “We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all the companies and organisations that have provided a placement to our students. We really appreciate the time and resources that are involved in providing work experience and value their support. We are proud of the way students conducted themselves, and this experience will enable them to further develop their work-related skills and help in their future career planning. An opportunity to experience the world of work at first hand enables students to consider their post-16 options more realistically and discover the qualifications and pathways required for them to reach their career goal.” juLY 2018

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT This month, we are lucky enough to meet local martial arts instructor and personal trainer, Robbie Tyler. When he’s not running the Market Deeping Tang Soo Do club, he teaches a variety of fitness classes, works closely with clients, and is bringing up his one-year-old daughter with his wife, Lucy. Being a martial arts enthusiast since the age of six, he currently holds a 4th Degree Master Belt and has achieved medals at regional, national, European and world level. His passion is what lead to his career in the fitness industry where he teaches classes such as spinning, pump, circuits and metafit. Not only that, but he finds great pride in helping people to achieve their fitness goals by working with them on a one-to-one basis. Not only is Tang Soo Do his career, it’s a big part of his family life too. As Robbie explains, “Tang Soo Do has been a huge part of my life, has helped to shape me as a person and allowed me to enjoy sharing my knowledge with the students I teach. My wife also trains and is working towards her black belt. My daughter also shows real enthusiasm and I can’t wait for her to begin training when she’s old enough.”

Robbie Tyler

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was born in Peterborough and have lived in Deeping all my life. My favourite memories of my childhood come from the places I’ve visited with my martial arts; it has taken me all over the world.

How would you describe yourself in only five words? Motivated, enthusiastic, respectful, disciplined, positive. If there was one thing which you could change about the Deepings, what would it be and why? I would love to make martial arts in the Deepings a necessity for all children in schools, because I believe it helps to guide them on the right path in life and develop them into well-rounded people.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? There are a few people who have influenced my life massively. First is my dad, because without him I couldn’t have achieved what I have without his support. Second are my instructors, Master Easton and Master Khan, as they have given me a lot of time in training which has opened up the best opportunities for success.

What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? I would tell myself to keep doing what you’re doing; your hard work and training will pay off, keep teaching and enjoy doing it.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Bruce Lee and Jackie 52

Last month, a national scams awareness campaign was run throughout the whole country, and our team took part for the third year running. Citizens Advice wants to reduce the risk and impact of scams by raising awareness and encouraging people to take action – recognizing, reporting, and talking about the issues. Scams aren’t just a minor inconvenience to people. Aside from financial loss, they can cause distress and misery and, even if a scam has been avoided, it can lead to a widespread loss of confidence. Scams can also happen to anyone. Some encountered recently include: • Doorstep electricity meter credit • Prize draws, sweepstakes and foreign lotteries • Miracle health cures • Subscription traps • Property rentals • Pyramid selling and chain gift schemes • Working from home • Real fur sold as fake fur Recent research from Age UK found that around two fifths of older people across the UK who believe they have been targeted by fraudsters didn’t report it to an official channel. More than a fifth, (22%), admitted they didn’t tell anyone at all because they felt too embarrassed. Even just reporting it could help provide the authorities with the information they need to stop scams and prevent others from falling victim. Our team worked with the local Trading Standards organisation, holding stalls in shopping centres, giving talks, and getting posters up in Community Centres, and were very happy with the level of awareness generated.

Stamford Shakespeare Company – Fifty Glorious Years! Every summer, more than 34,000 people from throughout the UK and from overseas attend the Stamford Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed summer season of plays in June, July and August at the Rutland Open Air Theatre, Tolethorpe Hall, near Stamford. Performances take place on an open-air stage, set within an enchanting woodland glade facing a 600-seat, raked, and permanently covered, auditorium. No performance is ever cancelled because of the rain. This remarkable play, with its explorations of prejudice, love, justice, and the power of money, deeply resonates to us in these present turbulent times, but it also stands alone, as a truly gripping story.

The Stage newspaper described it as “one of England’s premier alfresco theatre venues”, whilst The Sunday Times described a visit here as being “one of the finest things to do this summer”. In addition to the recognised high standard of performances the theatre is known for the quality of all its facilities, making it one of the finest openair theatres in Europe. This year, the Company is celebrating its golden anniversary. Work currently taking place includes an exciting revamp of the bar, restaurant and orangery which will celebrate the past fifty years. There will be costume and photo displays, exhibitions of the Company’s history and much more. Incredibly, the 2018 season has seen ticket sales hit one million since the Company began performing at Tolethorpe Hall, having transferred from The Monastery Garden at The George Hotel in Stamford in 1977. Throughout this summer, the Company are performing Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The School for Scandal. The Merchant of Venice: Venice, 1596, and Antonio, an honourable merchant, enters into a chilling contract to enable his dearest friend to woo a beautiful heiress, whose fate lies waiting within caskets of gold, silver and lead. At the heart of the story stands Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, one of Shakespeare’s greatest and most complex characters.

The Merry Wives of Windsor: The old rogue, Sir John Falstaff, has returned penniless from the war and plans to seduce two ‘merry wives’. Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy is his nearest approach to a farce, with people forever rushing in and out of doors, including a comic Welsh parson, a manic French doctor and a madly jealous husband. Depicting middle-class family life in an English provincial town, this production is set in 1947, a time of austerity and optimism, when women are finding a new role in post-war Britain and the musicians at the Garter Inn are playing ’40s jazz. The School for Scandal: Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy sparkles with wit, verbal brilliance and an intricate plot exposing the lives and loves of fashionable London society. Sir Peter Teazle’s simple country bride becomes leader of a group of scandalmongers who tear their friends’ reputations to shreds. Can anyone escape the outrageous gossip of, amongst others, the aptly named Benjamin Backbite, Lady Sneerwell, Mrs Candour and Snake? This wonderfully funny play is one of the most engaging high comedies in the English language.

Performances: June 12th – September 1st 2018 Evening performance – 7.45pm start • Matinée performance – 1.30pm start Booking information: Box office: 01780 756133 • Further information: www.stamfordshakespeare.co.uk juLY 2018

Why do Dogs Eat Grass? Dogs love to munch away on grass and some even make it part of their daily routine. Fortunately, most experts believe it isn’t something you should worry about. Nearly every dog eats grass sometimes, and some dogs eat it all the time. You would think that by now we would have a good reason why they do it. But we don’t. Dogs explore their worlds with their noses and mouths and there’s the grass; attractive, sweet, with an appealing texture and it’s very accessible on the ground. Why not eat it? Dogs are very flexible in their tastes. They’ll eat their dog food, then walk over to see if there’s anything good left in the rubbish bin. Basically, they’ll eat or try to eat, whatever they find in front of them. They wouldn’t care too much if it had been lying in the sun for a week, or was half-buried or even had other

juLY 2018

things crawling in it. It is food to them and they are not going to pass it up. Dogs, unlike their catty counterparts, are not carnivores. But they’re not like your normal omnivores, either. For tens of thousands of years, these opportunistic scavengers have devoured anything and everything, as long as it fulfilled their basic dietary requirements. Dogs are best described as carnivorous omnivores. They don’t need to eat grass or vegetable matter from the garden anymore because most dog foods are nutritionally balanced and complete. But dogs aren’t nutritionists; they just know what they like. Their natural instincts tell them that grass can be eaten, so they eat it. Vets still aren’t sure if dogs eat grass because they feel sick or if their stomachs get upset after they have

eaten the grass. One theory suggests that there’s something in grass that does stimulate the urge to vomit. Another theory suggests that when ingested, the grass blade tickles the throat and stomach lining; this sensation, in turn, may cause the dog to vomit; again we don’t really know. So, when you think about it, grass munching isn’t that bad at all; just be aware that when grass has been treated with insecticides, herbicides, or other chemicals, it can be very hazardous to your dog. Avoiding letting your dog eat grass in public places is a good idea as some areas could have been treated with these types of chemicals.

“We’re all Going on a Summer Holiday” - Passports for Pets

F

or those of us thinking of taking our dog, cat or even ferret on holiday abroad, the pet passport legislation makes it easier for us to cross the border between the United Kingdom and other countries within E.U. Previously, we had to face the expensive route of quarantining our pets for months and blood testing adequate levels of rabies immunity to allow entry back into Britain. Since 2012, however, pet passports allow our pets to travel from certain countries without the difficulties previously experienced. Pet passports allow you to return to the UK a minimum of twenty-one days after issue. Your pet must be microchipped and have a rabies injection and, before travelling home, must have a tapeworm treatment no longer than five days and no shorter than twenty-four hours before travel. The vet who administers the tapeworm treatment must also sign the passport to this effect. It is also recommended that a second tapeworm treatment is given within one month of returning, although this is not a legal requirement as yet. Discuss with your vet any other parasitic controls that are needed abroad too. Some travel companies also require evidence that your pet is healthy for travel, so read your booking documents carefully.

Travelling by car ensure that your pet will have lots of opportunities to break the journey. Car sickness is a big problem for some, so discuss this well in advance with your vet. De-sensitising them to a long car ride is the best form of action, but this can take several weeks of training. Pills can alleviate some of the nausea for a short period, but tranquilisers are best avoided as they only make the travel worse. Place your pet in a secure carrier to keep them safe, and some prefer it darkened to reduce stress. Rules of pet travel vary between countries as well as between continents. Did you know, for instance, that it is illegal to own a ferret in California? For countries not within the pet passport scheme, export legislation is much more complicated. Check with the government website for more information: https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad and get advice a few months in advance. Using companies that specialise in transporting pets reduces much of the stress. So, enjoy your holiday with your pet … and don’t forget the sunscreen.

If you intend to fly with your pet, you’ll need to plan further ahead, but do not despair. A well thought out plan of action will make the trip a lot easier. All pets must travel in an airline approved carrier. Buy the carrier well in advance and ensure that the size is adequate for your pet to turn around and sit comfortably. It must also be suitable for providing food and water for your pet. Slowly introduce your carrier to your pet and provide positive associations with it. Leave the door open, fill the space with treats, familiar toys and a blanket and by doing so you are ensuring that the panic trying to get them into the carrier on the big day will not happen. The next step is to have several dry runs with the carrier in transit. Take off and landing in a plane is the most stressful part of the journey so when they are used to being in it in the car, go to noisier places such as a car wash to help them adjust.

Martin Coulson – Locksmith

Martin Coulson

Ibal qualified locksmith

Useful tip: When you move into a new, pre-owned property, get the locks changed – you never know who still has a key to get into your (new) home! That sound advice comes courtesy of local sole trader, Martin Coulson, who set up his business two years ago, and who is now developing a favourable reputation, as a qualified locksmith, across his trading area, within a twenty-five mile radius of Peterborough. Martin’s work includes the supply and fitting of most new types of lock, for both domestic and commercial premises. Available at the end of a phone twenty-four hours a day, Martin can also be called upon to repair jammed doors, and to help people who have been locked out of their car or their home. Needless to say, he could also replace your locks, were you to actually follow his advice above!
