Welcome to your March issue...
T
his is the favourite month for many of us mums. On the one hand, it gives us the opportunity to thank our wonderful mothers on their special day, (this year March 10th) for everything they do for us and for ‘providing the glue’ to keep the happy family together. Some of us whose mothers are no longer with us (and this being our second Mother’s Day without our dear mum) can take time to remember fondly all those times when she turned out to have been right all along … but forgave us anyway!
Inside Highlights 4-5......... Olivers Baby Care. 6-7.......... Fenland Carpets and Flooring. 8-9......... Birchgrove Garden Centre for Megapets and Bettertack.
10............ Become a Trustee for
Bourne United Charities.
On the other hand, of course, it’s the time when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing, a whole day in which we are spoilt rotten with flowers, chocolates, and perfume. Tell me if you think I’m dropping too big a hint here! Enjoy the day … whatever form it may take.

Mother’s Day is always an invaluable opportunity to take the time out to thank your mother, (and don’t forget the mother-in-law either!) for giving you so much, right from the very beginning. This year, our mums are placed centre-stage on March 10th. That extra evening light, when the clocks go forward an hour on March 31st, will make us all feel that summer’s not too far away either. During my recent weekend stay in Peterborough City Hospital, I was amused to see the wonderful catering staff providing “meat-free” options, which of course just had to be served by their “skeleton staff”! nd finally: Whilst there, I told the nurse that I could hear a constant A buzzing, but she said it’s just a bug going around.

Ten Years of
Fenland Carpets & Success & Flooring Celebrates Innovation
A
local company, Fenland Carpets & Flooring, is proud to announce the celebration of its ten-year anniversary. Since its inception in 2014, Fenland Carpets & Flooring has been committed to excellence, innovation and customer satisfaction, and this milestone marks a momentous journey of growth and success. Over the years, Fenland Carpets & Flooring has grown from modest beginnings to a prominent player in the flooring sector in Lincolnshire. Through unwavering dedication from a team who have worked in the industry together for over twenty years, they have successfully navigated the many obstacles that have affected us all over the last few years to bring new design concepts, traditional and contemporary ranges, and a keen focus on what their customers’ needs are. From the very start, they have offered a comprehensive five-year fitting guarantee, made possible by not using outside contractors. All the team are part of the ‘Fenland family’, a family with over eighty years of combined experience in the sector, including sales and installation. They continue to be at the forefront of accommodating new home construction techniques, including the rise in popularity of underfloor heating and how it can affect your choice of flooring. Of course, this is all in accordance with their suppliers’ guidelines for individual products and fitting techniques.
M A RC H 2 024
A large part of their story is the drive to balance products from the leading brands, like Karndean, Axminster and Quickstep, with the focus on selecting British-made products, British wool, and British-based manufacturers, wherever possible. They offer select ranges of carpets and vinyls from in-store stock, as well as a selection of rugs, and a service for the making of bespoke rugs and carpet runners.
“We are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers, dedicated employees and supportive partners who have been integral to our success throughout this remarkable journey,” said founder and director, Nicholas Bloodworth. “This anniversary signifies not only the years of hard work and determination but also the immense potential that lies ahead as we continue to support our local communities.” Fenland’s commitment to innovation has been at the heart of its growth. This includes “bringing the store to your door”, with their estimating and measuring service, with some products available to view as if already fitted, with a “room viewer” software facility. Having a price guarantee to endeavour to match or beat any written quote on a like-for-like basis is another offering to ensure the best deals for their customers.

Property News
Property Market Update
BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR
2023
ESTATE AGENT IN BOURNE
Source: Dataloft, Zoopla (January 2024) & GfK Consumer Confidence Tracker.
T
he property market in 2024 has started with a bang, with ‘new sales agreed’ (a key measure of market confidence and activity) up 13% in the first three weeks of January, compared to the same period last year. The volume of sales agreed is higher across all regions and counties, led by Yorkshire and the Humber (+19%) and the West Midlands (+17%), although the East of England still saw a 6% rise, which is a positive sign for the year ahead.
With mortgage rates having improved, and consumers at their most confident since January 2022, activity is improving, although it is important to note that the rebound is off a low base. Whilst there is positivity in the market, buyers remain very price-sensitive, with one in five sellers accepting more than 10% below the asking price to achieve a sale. Pricing, as with any market, remains key to being accurate in order to achieve the best possible price. For those properties that are priced appropriately, we are seeing positive results and the signs ahead for 2024 are promising.

Waterside Garden Centre: Update After January’s Devastating Flood
T
he following optimistic message came our way early in February from the staff at the beleaguered Waterside Garden Centre near Baston.
“Drying the building out is a huge task – so to help with that we have now got three more huge dehumidifiers from Sweden. This is going to help us with drying the building quicker so that we can move on to the next project, which will be the walls, flooring, and starting to look more like a garden centre again. Our team are all working incredibly hard to achieve our goal of re-opening in April. There is still a lot of work to do but our fingers are crossed!” We at Discovering Magazines send the team at Waterside all our very best wishes for a speedy return to fully operational conditions. Perhaps the time isn’t quite right yet to re-name it “The Water-inside Garden Centre”!
Words from the Mayor At Bourne Town Council, the recent flooding has prompted us to review our emergency plan for the area to ensure it can be activated quickly and efficiently when needed.

How to See Clearly if Your Double Glazing Fails By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Window condensation is a common problem, especially in the colder months, when windows typically remain closed for long periods. When the seal on a double-glazed glass unit breaks down, or ‘fails’ as it is known in the industry, that condensation will get into the inside of the glass unit, resulting in misted double glazing which can be permanently trapped. If this is the case, it won’t only be the heat that is rising from your home, your energy bills could see a hike too. So – what should you do at the first signs of condensation in your windows? Internal condensation within the room can be prevented by opening your windows for a short period of time every day, or opening your window trickle vents if you have them, or making sure the room is adequately ventilated. Double glazing is made by putting two panes of glass together with a thermally efficient spacer bar in between that is slightly smaller than the overall dimensions of the glass to form a gap between them. The glass is then sealed together using a hot melt adhesive to form a double-glazed unit. The air trapped inside the two glasses (or gas for improved thermal efficiency) creates an insulating barrier that keeps heat in and the cold out. If the seal fails, and condensation gets trapped inside these two panes of glass, this can result in misted windows. The message from Safe Local Trades double glazing experts is that the most common misconception is that a brand-new window is needed when the sealed unit fails, meaning that a lot of people put off having the unsightly misted window replaced due to cost. It is also worth mentioning that broken sealed units are leaking expensive energy out from your home into the environment, making your heating system work harder than it needs to To repair this window, all that is required is a new double-glazed unit (providing the frame is in good condition), not the entire window. This unit can be fitted in minutes with minimal disruption! Whatever your style of window, or concern, there is likely to be a solution. For more information on this and other double-glazing repairs, please visit www.safelocaltrades.com/PE/pe-central/ window-and-door-repairs/pe1 Other trades from our extensive range of tried and tested professionals can be found www.safelocaltrades.com M A R CH 2 0 2 4

BOURNE BOOKSHOP 19 North Street, Bourne, PE10 9AE
Pineapple Street BY JENNY JACKSON
Meet the Stockton women of Brooklyn Heights: Darley, who was born with money; Sasha, who married into it; and Georgiana, who wants to give it all away. Among glittering parties, weekend homes and hungover brunches, the three will have to grapple with the burden of parental expectations, the hardships and bewilderment of growing up, and the miles between the haves and have-nots. “Pineapple Street” is a witty and wicked novel about New York’s ‘one-percenters’: their first loves, family feuds and the complexities of being human – even when you have everything.

The Shadow Network BY TONY KENT
How do you take down an enemy when no one believes they exist? When the lawyers of alleged war criminal, Hannibal Strauss are caught up in a terror attack in The Hague, barrister Michael Devlin immediately suspects all is not what it seems. Teaming up once more with agent, Joe Dempsey, they must find who’s behind it all before any more innocent lives are lost. With their key witness on the run and assassins on their tail, their only lead is a codename: the Monk, a legendary and mysterious foreign agent with a fearsome reputation. But what is his stake in this dangerous game? And just who is part of his shadowy network of spies?

Lasting Powers of Attorney WORDS FROM KATIE MOORBY
A
Lasting Power of Attorney is a document which appoints individuals to make decisions and act on your behalf once you no longer have the capacity to do so. There are two types of LPA:
1 Health and Welfare
• Decisions regarding life-sustaining treatment and other medical treatment. • Decisions surrounding care, daily routine and living arrangements.
2 Property and Financial Affairs
• Decisions about money, banks, bills. • Decisions about the sale or purchase of property.
What are the Benefits? ● YOU are choosing who you would wish to act on your behalf, rather than having an individual
apply to the Court of Protection to make decisions on your behalf once it is too late. ● Being prepared. It can happen to anyone, at any time!
Whilst it may never happen, it is worth considering what would happen if you lost mental capacity and were unable to make decisions for yourself. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, your loved ones may struggle to manage your day-to-day affairs. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, they may have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a Deputy Guardian to manage your affairs. This is both more costly and more time-consuming than arranging and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney whilst you still can. If you wish to discuss the issue of Lasting Powers of Attorney further, please do not hesitate to telephone our Bourne office on 01778 423 376 and we will gladly assist.

TheLeaf A REVIEW
A
BY CLAIRE SABERTON
t times it seems that the town of Bourne is losing its way, as shop after shop put up their final shutters. Ironic, (yet absolutely fabulous), then that another eating establishment has appeared on our streets.
I’ve got to say that it was one very memorable occasion for me to make my way to The Leaf on West Street recently and become a convert to ‘Kerala cuisine’!
More recommendations and words of praise: “Fantastic food, from the table snacks right through to desserts (different from a normal Indian). Brilliant service, welcoming and friendly staff. They will go above and beyond to accommodate and help.” “The venue itself is lovely, small and intimate without being too crowded and the service was great, highly attentive and friendly and prices were very reasonable.”
Colleagues have waxed lyrical to me about how this form of Southern Indian preparation and presentation of fresh meat, fish, vegetables, and spices to produce curries and other favourites would leave me eager to return and sample more delicious dishes. I was very soon to be sold on the whole package, from mouth-watering tempters, leading into the main course and dessert.
“Authentic Keralan dishes. Fantastic food. The chefs are from Kochi in Kerala, so they know what they are doing when offering speciality dishes from the region. Absolutely superb quality food.”
The Masala Dosa and accompanying Kerala Porotta were divine, and there seemed to be nothing to fault as the evening progressed. Attentive, but not over-intrusive staff, were keen to share their love of their offerings with our party, and the whole laid-back feel of the décor and furnishings helped create such a fine, relaxing mood.
“Masala dosa heaven! If you like real Indian food, then eat here. Masala dosa are one of my favourite things to eat, and to find somewhere local that does them was so exciting.”
Very competitively priced and well worth a visit. That fascinating, long and wide-ranging menu will take us some getting through, but we’ll try!

Exciting Times for Wood Grange Residents
Visit from our local MP
We were delighted to welcome Gareth Davies, MP for Stamford, Grantham and the surrounding villages. He met with staff members and was taken on a tour of the home by Katya to see all the fantastic facilities Wood Grange has to offer. Gareth was particularly interested in meeting the residents, especially Ethel, the oldest resident at Wood Grange at the grand age of 104!
Visit from ‘Michelle’s Pet Party’
Michelle shared her furry friends with the residents in communal areas and in their rooms. This brought a lot of joy to the home and uplifted the residents.
Celebrating the Chinese New Year
The residents enjoyed opening their lucky envelopes and developing their chopstick skills. The kitchen prepared delicious chicken chow mein, prawn crackers and a traditional Chinese dessert. 42

A Walk Down Eastgate
H by Brynley Heaven

account”. You can barely imagine the smells and the pollution from the offals, the unmentionable inputs and by-products!
Eastgate House where aviation pioneer, Amy Johnson, stayed as a house guest.
Eastgate is a very old, core part of Bourne and stood slightly separate from the historic town centre, over marshy ground. As the head of navigation, this is where the coal wharves were located and where the grain barges came. It was once renowned for pottery kilns in medieval and early modern times. Here were to be found the Bourne Gas Light and Coke Company and their successors (18401957) along with the skin-scraping tanneries of T.W.Mays, fellmongers and woolstaplers, who boasted “every atom of the carcasses .. turned to some commercial
Walking Eastgate today, there are new houses at No 32, where The Butcher’s Arms was wiped off the face of the earth, literally “knocked into the river” on 4th May 1941 by a crashing German plane, during World War Two. The Anchor Inn on the former Eastgate quayside is a rare and delightful ‘survivor’, when so many pubs have closed or been altered beyond recognition and offers a waterside terrace. You can imagine the wharf-side scene with cargoes hoisted, boatmen drinking, deals of all kinds, news from afar, gossip and diversions, arrivals, and departures. As our walk comes to an end, it’s good to see new homes offering waterfront living. Eastgate has always been a mixture, seeing pleasure gondolas for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and a water pageant in a grainy photo online that looks a lot of fun, with local hooded ‘monks’ off to bury ‘Hereward the Wake’ in 1938! The ‘Eastgate Backs’ today looking downstream. This was the site of tanneries and fleece warehouses. There was once coastal as well as inland shipping using this stretch of The Bourne Eau.

102-Year Journey for Shaws of Maxey Family-owned coach company celebrates 102 years and four generations with their incredible customer service scores and exciting new destinations!
S
haws of Maxey was founded in 1922 by Edwin ‘Teddy’ Shaw who set out with just one bus that was repaired by candlelight and stored in a friendly farmer’s barn! Edwin ran a service into Peterborough, along with anything else that came his way – including furniture removals. Before long, Edwin took a chance and purchased land in Maxey (where they are still based). After World War Two, Edwin was joined by his son, Harry, whose favourite job was team driver for Peterborough United F.C.! Harry tookover, and the business flourished under his enthusiastic leadership. When Harry died suddenly in 1981, his three children took the helm and chanced another big business decision with the launch of Shaws’ first holiday brochure in 1982. It featured six tours, one of which had just six passengers (including two family members!) The others did rather better and around forty holidays and four-hundred-day trips now depart every year! Their new brochure features wonderful new destinations, such as The Keighley & Worth Railway, Hoveton Gardens, Summer Circus in Great Yarmouth and An Officer And A Gentleman. Plus look out for the launch of a special Reunion Day Out (following the huge success of their Reunion Short Breaks). Shaws are celebrating 102 years of success with the results of their 2023 customer service scores which showed that a whopping 99% of holiday customers would book again and that more people are choosing Shaws to experience their first-ever coach holiday! So, if you’re new to coach holidays, follow the trend and find out for yourself why Shaws’ family business is so highly rated.

Aerophobia

Fear of Flying Can Be Overcome
erophobia is an intense fear that is out of proportion to the actual danger, which is particularly relevant to fears of flying. Most people will agree that flying is safe, yet frightening. They have a hard time reconciling their fear with safety statistics. Although we know our phobias are not logical, we cannot reason ourselves out of one. They can stop us from taking part in family holidays or put them off, thus interfering with our work and social lives.
flight phobics is the fear that they will become overwhelmed with anxiety during the flight. People experience an unexpected panic while flying, and then they fear the terrifying symptoms will return during their next flight. These panics typically emerge between the ages of seventeen to thirty-four; around the time of a significant life change such as a birth, death, marriage, divorce, or graduation. That is why people with flying phobias often wonder why they had once been able to fly so comfortably. Very few fears of flying originate with a traumatic flight.
One important thing to note is that fear of flying is not always a single phobia, as many people who fear flying are also claustrophobic, or frightened of being locked in the plane and unable to choose when to get off, feeling out of control.
With the fear of flying, there is a huge component of anticipatory anxiety, or the fear experienced in anticipation of taking a flight. Any successful treatment will help fearful fliers manage anticipatory anxiety because many people avoid planning flights, or they just cancel them.
Our fears of flying have triggers, which are thoughts, images, sensations, and memories to which we have become sensitized. A person who is sensitized to certain bodily feelings might fear turbulence or normal take-off and landing. And someone who fears heights might become terrified thinking about flying many miles above the ground.
Fear of flying is split into three main groups; which one do you belong to?
1 2 3
Those who don’t fly or haven’t flown for more than five years, despite the opportunity to do so. Those who fly only when absolutely necessary, with extreme terror.
Those who fly when required, but with anxiety.
Having once been flight phobic myself, now I am constantly rewarded by the pleasure of being able to jump on a plane and fly anywhere in the world. The good news is that your brain has an ability to learn and change; you are constantly learning. Changing and learning new habits, such as being more relaxed and calmer, can help overcome simple phobias very quickly. Hypnotherapy communicates with the subconscious, filtering through how you want to be, rather than how you currently are, thus taking back control.
“Flying phobia is a common disorder, but it is possible to overcome it with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.”
What’s behind the Phobias and Fears? The common denominator for more than 90% of

Hay Fever?
We Are Here to Help!
I
f you are anything like me, then you are fully aware just how much hay fever can ruin your spring and summer months. Last year, I was excited to be able to offer a treatment that I know personally changed my life. With one pain-free injection, it is possible to eliminate your symptoms for the affordable price of £70... and it lasts for up to three months!
I am a registered pharmacist of over twenty-five years, and, during my practice, I became only too aware of just how serious the symptoms can be, and how many of you out there suffer unnecessarily. The injection is no longer provided by the NHS, so many people find themselves administering multiple products per month with minimum relief.
TREATMENTS WE OFFER Dermal fillers ✦ Lip fillers ✦ Bunny lines Downturned corners of the mouth ✦ Gummy smiles Profhilo (turkey neck) ✦ Hay fever injections Fat dissolving ✦ Vitamin B12 injections Anti-wrinkle treatments ✦ Hand rejuvenation Smokers' lines ✦ Profhilo (five-point face lift) Vitamin D injections ✦ Under eye treatments Brow lift ✦ Cheek filler ✦ Excessive sweating ✦ Masseter Botox (teeth grinding) ✦

The hay fever jab has helped me so much this summer. It's helped ease my symptoms. Alistair and Julie were so friendly and chatty, they put me at ease straight away and made me feel so welcome. Will definitely be returning!"
Last year at the clinic, I and hundreds of our clients managed to remove the need for all medication, both over the counter and prescribed, after this simple treatment. We found last year that our clients were typically spending over £30 per month on multiple products. We are able to treat, not only adults, but also children who suffer during their school terms, as long as they are aged six and over, subject to consultation. As we all remember, summertime is exam time! So, why not spare ten minutes of your time to reclaim your summer and make it “hay fever-free”?

How Can Massage Cupping Help You?
H
i, I’m Heidi Marshall, CMT, from Illinois in the States. I introduced myself a few months ago. In it, I briefly described some of the therapies that I have been trained in and use in my sessions with clients. This month, I’d like to expand on one of the therapies that I use…Massage Cupping. Cupping has roots in Ancient Egypt and China. There are also connections of cupping in Greece and Ancient Islamic texts. It then spread to Europe around the 14th century. It was used for treating such ailments as menstrual imbalance, loss of appetite, fever, pain, and vertigo. I was trained in Massage Cupping by Anita J. Shannon. Massage Cupping is different from what most think of when they hear those words. It isn’t big, red circles left on your body, looking like you lost a fight with an octopus! It is an evolution of cupping. It uses suction and negative pressure to release tight muscles, reduce scarring and adhesions, reduce oedema, open tissues, and bring in fluids, and help the lymph system to “take out the trash” and move nutrients throughout the body. I also use it as a diagnostic tool. Moving the cup along the body can show me areas that are tight, stuck, and/or the tissue brought into the cup may change colour indicating old blood underneath the surface. I use a machine to create the suction for me with glass and polycarbonate cups. The application of lotion or oil is used to create a seal with the cups and help with smooth gliding. It can be used on the back, neck, face, limbs, hands, and feet.
Heidi Marshall
Massage Cupping creates an opening of the tissues and is a nice option for someone who is sensitive to deep pressure but needs deep work. It is also sedating to the nervous system. Massage Cupping draws inflammation out, does not irritate the skin, opens the pores (allowing for easier absorption of topical oils or analgesics), brings fresh blood into an area to start healing, and moves out toxins. The results are often accumulative. I have had great success working with scars/adhesions, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and increasing one’s range of motion. It is safe for most, with an awareness and gentleness used for children, the elderly, diabetics, and those on blood thinners.

It can be very profound and powerful. As with all bodywork, don’t be surprised if there is emotional release, soreness, perhaps feeling a bit sick, and/or feeling dehydrated. Drinking water after your session, staying warm, and doing some very light movement/stretching all help with integrating the session. Come and see how Massage Cupping can help you. Will & Probate Services
“The Loving Legacies Foundation” - New Charity Launched
NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
A new charity with a mission to help deliver wills and other associated legal services to families with children and young people who have additional and complex needs has been launched.
S
et up by employees at W&P Legal, “The Loving Legacies Foundation” aims to fund the families to make wills with a professional will-writer, to ensure the children’s care can continue should their parents/ carers pass away. Research shows only 44% of adults in the UK have a will that is valid and up to date*. That means that over half have not taken the necessary steps to protect their assets, make their wishes clear and, most importantly, elect legal guardians for children.
SEND (Special educational needs and disabilities) families was getting the funds together to pay for the legal services. With continuous fundraising and proactive partnerships with law firms around the country, “The Loving Legacies Foundation” will provide the vital, added protection these families need to ensure their children and young people are safe in the event of their death and alleviate some of the added worry the parents may already have. Steina McKenna, left, attending a “Little Miracles” event with Nick Ash and Sophie Ward.
Whilst that shocking statistic didn’t come as too much of a surprise to employees at W&P Legal, it was when they became Gold Ambassadors for local charity, “Little Miracles” that the extent of the lack of knowledge around how important later-life planning and protection is became clear. Steina McKenna and Mya Miscandlon, both employees at W&P Legal, had been working closely with “Little Miracles” to educate the families on why making a will is so important, providing legal seminars on setting up family trusts, writing wills, putting Powers of Attorney in place and taking all necessary steps to ensure continuity of care and protection of assets should they pass away.** Steina found that the common denominator with
The foundation is launching this month and will begin with a sponsored twenty-mile walk in the Peak District in April. Nick Ash, a local and wellrespected will-writer, is also aiming to raise £60,000 this year in honour of his sixtieth birthday (named ‘Sixty for Sixty’) and will be donating 50% of the proceeds to “The Loving Legacies Foundation”. “The Loving Legacies Foundation” is currently seeking pledges for fundraising, and invites anyone who is interested in learning more about the foundation or donating, to keep an eye out for their official JustGiving page which will be available imminently.
* Statistics taken from National Wills Report 2023. ** Research undertaken by WillAid shows almost two-thirds of parents in the UK have not named guardians in their will for their children should they pass away.

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
Probate What is it?
What are they?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

“Raymond’s Legacy” by Dick Salmon
I
As one of Bourne’s surviving BRM mechanics approaches his 99th birthday, Dick Salmon is about to have published his second book, detailing even more fascinating stories of how Bourne’s very own, small motor racing firm was once able to compete with the world’s finest.
n 2006, Dick’s “BRM: A Mechanic's Tale” book was met with much popular acclaim. Many of us lucky enough to have been in the town in the 1960s and ’70s were able to spot friends and acquaintances within the masses of photographs which accompanied the meticulously researched text. His latest book, “Raymond’s Legacy”, attempts to be a narrative of the 100-year history of the sport of motor racing associated with Raymond Mays, the town of Bourne and subsequently the Rubery Owen Organisation, through to the present day. Today, motor racing is still being actively pursued by several businesses in Bourne and district, all of which have, with little doubt, evolved due to the pursuit of the sport in days of yore by a true Brunnian, Raymond Mays. Raymond was the only child of a successful Bourne wool merchant and fellmonger, Thomas William Mays, and his wife Anne. But not for him the smell and dirt of that occupation; he preferred the smell of burning oil and exhaust fumes and became
Four of the famous men responsible for having put Bourne so firmly on the world motor racing map: From the left, Sir Jackie Stewart, Raymond Mays, Sir Alfred Owen and Graham Hill
quite adept at pursuing the sport in various elements, with success with a variety of cars. In the early 1930s, along with engineer Peter Berthon and finance from Humphrey Cooke, the successful ERA car was born. This was to be superseded by the BRM. In 1951, following lack of finance, the latter came under the umbrella of the Midlands-based, Rubery Owen Organisation. Following some difficult years, and now under the personal guidance of Sir Alfred Owen, the BRM finally attained Raymond’s and Sir Alfred’s goal of winning the Formula 1 World Championship, when the season came to a climax in East London, South Africa in 1962, with Graham Hill driving the BRM to victory in the last Formula 1 race of that season. Unfortunately, thereafter, largely due to the death of Sir Alfred, the BRM project gradually went into a decline, finally ceasing to exist when cars and equipment were put up for sale at Earls Court, London on October 22nd, 1981. This book attempts to tell the story of that 100year journey of Raymond and his associates in one of the most popular of sports.

The book is expected to be available from Bourne Bookshop at the end of February.
