Introduction

Welcome to Your August Issue. “I love how summer just wraps its arms around you like a warm blanket.” Kellie Elmore’s words and not mine, but the last few weeks have certainly made us all feel that it’s arrived … and how! Now, August beckons and those long, hot days, with little and not-so-little ones looking for ways to fill their holiday month. How about our “Seaside Treasure Hunt”, where there’s £100 to be won, and our list of “School’s Out” places to visit, which we’ve included in this month’s issue? Whatever they choose, wherever they go and whoever they’re with, let’s hope that they can make it a summer to remember. Beware … we’re already running an ad. for “Back to School”, so if we don’t make the most of every day in August, then it’ll be September before they can bleat, “I’m bored!”

Claire x

It’s August which, for many, means only one thing – another school year is over, and the children (and teachers!) are enjoying their well-earned, six-week break. The “School Report” will have given parents and their offspring plenty to consider, whilst some of their teachers might have tried to combine sound educational advice with a little humour. I doubt if many, however, could have topped the following, all of which were gathered by a national newspaper from their readers recently.

The Vape Project

- Bourne’s Specialists in Electronic Cigarettes, E Liquids and Accessories Who Are We? Located at 35b West Street, Bourne, opposite the Post Office, The Vape Project is a small, family-owned business, established in April 2014. This was our first shop and we have since opened further shops in Market Deeping and Werrington. What Do We Do? We specialise in electronic cigarettes and e-liquids, and try to add a little more of a personal touch to make the customer experience as simple as possible. Staff are trained in offering expert advice on which type of device will best suit the various types of customer. Then, to finish it all off, when it comes to choosing flavours of liquids, we have approximately one hundred to test in our flavour8

testing station, just to ensure that the customer knows they are going home with something that’s right for them. We know that, for smokers, it is a difficult decision to take the leap to vaping. That is why we tailor each person’s experience to best suit them, and will talk through the entire process and help set up the devices and show you the simple, easy steps to maintain the kit and refill your liquids. We cater for almost everything, from beginner kits all the way through to advanced set-ups, and from standard range juices to premium made, high VG juices, made in the U.K. and the U.S.A. Compliant juices are all made to the highest standards, and are produced in state-of-the-art, clean rooms.

Why Use Electronic Cigarettes? Over the years, hundreds if not thousands of studies have been carried out on e-cigarettes and their effects. The Government now go on record as saying that e-cigarettes are 95% better for you than smoking. They are also supported by Cancer Research UK and the NHS. But, aside from the obvious health benefits to be gained from switching from smoking, you should definitely see some big differences in your pocket too. A New Approach to Losing Weight N

ew research shows that almost two thirds of the British population are on a diet to lose weight all, or most of, the time. Many achieve some weight loss by trying different diets, but often end up in a yo-yo cycle where they start a diet, lose some weight, and then fall off the wagon, either because they have unrealistic expectations about the diet and their weight loss goals, or the diet is just not sustainable. The reality is that over 98% of people who lose weight on a diet gain the weight back within two years. So, research says that diets don’t work … at least not in the long term.

• Emotional hunger.

Many people are thinking about weight loss in the wrong way. Most people want to lose weight, simply to remove excess fat from the body. However, most of the time, the weight is there for a reason. Excess weight or fat is simply a symptom, not the root cause. If you lose the weight but don’t address the cause, the weight will come back, over and over again.

• Someone else’s belief that we need to lose weight.

So, it’s not just about eating fewer calories or doing more exercise, or being a willpower weakling – we need to address the cause of our excess weight. So, what are some of the causes of excess weight? They might include: • Mindless eating.

• Stress and anxiety. • Lack of sleep. • Overeating or binge-eating. • Loneliness. • Self-hatred. • Financial worries. • Hormone imbalance. • A misguided self-belief that we need to lose weight. • Toxic thoughts about ourselves and others. And much more! Gaining an understanding of our issues with weight needs a whole new approach. So, to truly lose weight and keep it off, we need to address the underlying issues which can take time and patience. If you want to learn more about how hypnotherapy can help you address your underlying issues with weight, and help you lose weight and keep it off, please get in touch.

Ears - Your questions answered

by Jane Russell RGN BSc (Hons) INP, the ‘Ear Nurse’

O

ver the last few months, many of our local G.P. surgeries have discontinued their ear irrigation service which many of you will know used to be called syringing. As a result, some patients will now need to consult with an independent ear care practitioner as they do for other health services, such as dentistry, podiatry, osteopathy and the optician for example.

Ears are just as important as your eyes, teeth and feet, yet they are often the neglected organ. Deafness or reduced hearing can make us feel vulnerable, especially if we live alone. It can make us feel dizzy, unsteady on our feet, and at times very unwell. As a nurse, I have specialised in caring for ears for the past twenty years. I am passionate about these fascinating organs and get immense satisfaction out of helping my patients leave the clinic feeling better than when they came in. I enjoy educating people and sharing my knowledge with them. Over the years, I have cared for thousands of ears and it still amazes me the methods people will use to try and remove a build-up of wax themselves. I have removed peas, insects, bits of twig, match ends, bits of hair grips, cotton bud tips and lately, some wax from a Hopi ear candle that had fallen onto the ear drum! Remember … ears are delicate and need to be looked after safely. Whilst everybody produces wax naturally, for some the amount is excessive. This problem is usually hereditary, but it can be from working in a noisy or dusty environment.

DIY bulbs that you buy over the chemist’s counter can cause problems from not actually being able to see what you are doing. Many drops that are sold to ‘dissolve’ the wax state that they can help you to avoid the irrigation process. However, wax does not actually dissolve, and these drops can contain acids, bleach, and peroxide, which are not the nicest things to put into your ears. To safely remove a wax build-up, I recommend putting a few drops of olive oil into each ear for four to six days, prior to booking an ear syringing consultation with a professional. Here at the Wellhead Practice, I see patients of all ages, and offer appointments on a Thursday, Friday and some Saturday mornings too. I offer a full examination of both ears with advice and education for £10. If you then require ear irrigation, this would cost £30 for one ear or £45 for both. Most patients will only need one appointment and, as part of the fee, I also include an annual ‘check up’ appointment, so we can make sure your ear(s) have remained in tip-top condition. For further information, or to make an appointment, please call the Practice on 01778 392832.

Flawless Body

- Achieving Body Confidence “We want people to feel great,” says Neeta. “Our philosophy is to provide bespoke solutions for bespoke bodies and promote body confidence. Every ‘body’ is unique and to get the best results, you need to have the best tools for the job”. Opening the clinic in May 2017, and investing a six figure sum in Lumenis laser and 3D Lipo equipment has enabled the business to offer laser hair removal, face and body treatments, tattoo removal, laser skin resurfacing and vaginal rejuvenation too. “Our Lumenis laser is based on new diode technology, not old IPL technology. That means it’s not a multipurpose laser, but does just one job hair removal - very well,” says Neeta. “Likewise, our 3D Lipo Ultimate device is cutting edge, providing a number of treatments to help with weight loss, reducing pockets of fat, overall circumference reduction, skin tightening and cellulite reduction with proven results.” “The machine can offer fat freezing, cavitation, radio frequency skin tightening and body HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) - the latest non-invasive ultrasound fat removal technology for virtually painfree inch loss.” “Our facial treatments range from

14

conventional microdermabrasion, through infused mesotheraphy with LED phototherapy, to even skin pigmentation and specialised Geneo+powered facials, that oxygenate the blood, stimulating cell renewal, followed by Tri-Pollar radio frequency to provide brighter, healthier looking skin. The results we have achieved to date have been outstanding.” The jewel in the crown however is the HIFU treatment for the face, known as the ‘non-surgical face lift’. Most of the clients Neeta has had for this service have been referrals, as the results have been so good. New additions this year have been tattoo removal, (using a unique Q-Switch laser) and vaginal rejuvenation, to treat incontinence and laxity. “Listening to clients, their needs and what is stopping them living and enjoying life is a big part of the job and the new equipment has been a direct result of this.” “We want people to feel good about themselves, and we want everyone to feel welcome at Flawless Body.

Bourne

We’re not interested in providing just standard treatments, but in building a relationship based on absolute trust and visible results for our clients, via bespoke procedures to ensure that our reputation in the town and surrounding area remains as wellrespected as it is.” “We’ve invested in the best equipment for the best outcomes for our clients and we provide the most skilled practitioners in our seven-strong team to ensure that the experience, the treatments, and the results you enjoy following a visit to Flawless Body are the very best that they can be,” says Neeta.

Travel

Advice for First-Time Cruisers How long? You might not want to risk spending fourteen days at sea, so plenty of cruise lines now offer two to five night itineraries, for example Cunard’s city break cruises, departing from Southampton and heading to Hamburg, Amsterdam, Bruges and more. We recommend a five to seven night cruise, so you can really get a feel for cruising. What kind of atmosphere? Some cruises still have the formal dress codes which are strictly adhered to, so beware! Many others have a ‘Captain’s Night’, which is still smart, but not as formal or strict, so you can enjoy getting dressed up, but don’t have to worry too much. We always advise packing appropriate clothing and footwear for on and off board. Remember, you will be exploring your ports of call. What about where you sleep? Think about how much time you’ll be spending in your cabin, and whether you will find it good value for money. If you are looking simply for the best deal, then this is always an inside cabin. But our advice for any first-timer is to go for at least an ocean view and, if possible, a balcony. Once you’ve sailed with the sea air in your cabin and enjoyed breakfast or pre-dinner drinks on the balcony, there’s no going back! Plus, the pool-side can get busy, so it’s nice to have your own sanctuary of space. And what you like to eat? Food is a massive part of cruising, of course. Would you be

Travel Counsellors

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

happy with set dining times or prefer to eat whenever you want? Quite a few lines offer drinks packages and often the earlier you book, the better the deal you get, so the drinks packages might be included for free. Keeping busy on board One of the best things about cruise ships is the range of activities. If it’s a family with small children, then look towards Norwegian/MSC/ Disney and Royal Caribbean, whose ships include family-focused pursuits, with ice skating, rock climbing and water parks, to name a few. If it’s a couple, then look at Celebrity Cruises or Holland America, for example, for outdoor games and activities, demonstrations from the chefs and crew, spa treatments, dancing and films. On a cruise, you really can be as active as you want … or simply sit back, relax, and let the waiter bring you another cocktail! It’s the same story by night. From a quiet piano bar, where you can enjoy a cocktail, reading a book, if that’s what you prefer, to cabaret shows by brilliant entertainers and guest artists who are often flown in for one night. You could take part in family games shows like ‘Deal or No Deal’ or ‘Play Your Cards Right’, and it’s usually rounded off by a late night disco. Tipping Tipping can be confusing, especially for first-timers. A lot of the American-owned ships now offer a “pre-paid gratuities” option and if you don’t want to pay this, you have to speak to the purser within a day of boarding. Many customers still express their wishes to pay the staff themselves who they feel have gone above and beyond to serve them, so that’s an occasion when you would need to avoid the pre-paid gratuities.

Have You Been PWNed?

by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

What is ‘pwned’? Pwned means that your account has been the victim of a data breach. It is a term that has come out of online gaming. It essentially means that someone has accessed and stolen your login details from a particular source.

that will show that the e-mail address has been compromised. In the example shown, the e-mail address used has been involved in a data breach on eleven occasions.

How do I find out if I’ve been pwned? Follow the instructions below and use an online source that will search and advise. Go to the website https://haveibeenpwned.com

Enter your email address into the pwned? box The site will now search its extensive database of reported data breaches to cross reference your e-mail address with those data breaches.

All being well, you will see a green – ‘no pwnage found’ response as shown. For many though, you will see the red warning box IT ITSupport Supportand andTraining for Home Training forComputer Home Users and Small Computer Users and SmallBusinesses Businesses 01476 550604 01778 590632 07894 07894659479 659479 www.litespc.co.uk www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk 20

Underneath the red box you will see the actual data breaches where the user data was compromised, (ie user ids and/or passwords stolen). If I have beenpwned what action should I take? You should change the password for your e-mail address and for the service that was compromised. This is especially important if you use the same password to login to different services and sites. So, for example, if the service ‘bitly’ was one of the data breaches, change your password for your email AND for the service ‘bitly’. Also change your password on any service where you have used that same password. Remember, if you are using phones and tablets to read your e-mail you will need to change them on here too to continue to receive your e-mail. Use a mix of upper case (capital) letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols for your password.

Kezia Kirtland’s Heroic Challenge to Say ‘Thank You’ to Great Ormond Street Hospital – You Can Help! At some stage, we and our loved ones have all experienced hospital aid – whether a minor procedure or a life-saving operation. I am appealing to you to aid me in my attempt to thank the staff of Great Ormond Street Hospital, after I received a crucial heart operation as an infant. On July 28th, 2000, I was born with a tight pulmonary valve. Not enough blood was being pumped to my lungs and I would have died by the age of two. I was transferred to Great Ormond Street and, aged ten weeks, I had a balloon dilation operation that spared my life. Although I cannot remember the operation, I was 22

D I S C O V E R I N G

monitored throughout my childhood and am aware that Great Ormond Street’s staff saved my life. The operation left me with a leaking pulmonary valve, meaning that my heart still works much harder than a normal heart, causing me to become fatigued with physical exertion. Nonetheless, I am attempting to complete Alfred Wainwright’s 192-mile Coast to Coast Walk, from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, raising money in an attempt to thank the hospital for the aid that they have given me. I will begin this adventure on my

Bourne

eighteenth birthday, and should complete the walk in fifteen days. When you read this, I will have already started! This is a huge, demanding challenge for me. Please help me raise £500 by visiting my Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ kezia-kirtland august 2018

SHABBY Renovation of existing furniture ◆ Up-cycling ◆ Staining Gift, Mirrors and Homeware ◆ Free home visits Home Delivery ◆ Commission Work “Not Too Shabby” – Up-cycled Furniture Which is Just That! Stacey Coles has recently taken the next step from turning what has long been just a hobby into an actual business, having moved into one of the units at Bourne’s West Street Centre. Located next to Petorama, opposite the Post Office, Stacey intends using the space to showcase her up-cycled furniture items and also stocks a range of homewares to brighten up any room. (Who could resist the following small sign, “My friend told me I was delusional – I nearly fell off my unicorn”?) Stacey has been up-cycling preloved furniture items for over a year at her Deeping St James home, but such has been the demand from the public for her wares that a move to bigger premises was required, and so “Not Too Shabby” was born. Stacey welcomes commission work and can arrange delivery for her customers.

Farewell Sandalls – Welcome Nelsons When the “Closing Down” sign appeared in the window of longestablished family butchers, Sandalls, on Bourne’s West Street last month, there were many people fearing yet another body blow to Bourne’s retail landscape. However, it soon transpired that it was to be a change of ownership and not a disappearance after all. The sighs of relief soon followed, and Nelsons began trading in Bourne on July 3rd! Popular owner, Teresa Andrew, had made the decision to give up full-time work to look after her father, Peter, whose entire working life had been spent as a butcher with G.J. Andrew & Son and Fancourts. Teresa herself

26

D I S C O V E R I N G

had followed him into the butchery business, opening Andrew’s of Bourne in The Burghley Centre in 2000, and then in 2010, combining that with Fancourts and Sandalls, to become “Sandalls Butchers”. The next exciting chapter now involves two ambitious business partners, Kris Moore and Matt Kingston, buying the highly respected Nelsons Butchers business, which already has a portfolio of four butchers’ shops, (two in Stamford, one in Oakham and one in Uppingham). The acquisition of Sandalls therefore, completes the ‘nap hand’ for Kris and Matt. Matt Kingston and Kris Moore are both ex-military personnel, both having left to forge new careers after active service abroad. Kris brings into the business an already well-developed knowledge of the meat industry, having gained butchery experience from his early teenage years, and then both in, and since leaving, the Army, seven years ago. Former Royal Marine, Matt, meanwhile will oversee all aspects of the operation, from ensuring that all staff and suppliers are happy, that the business remains profitable, and that, most important of all, Nelsons’ customers are getting the best possible products, with value and service second to none.

Bourne

Matt explained how the highly successful Stamford factory will continue as before, with meats arriving, mostly from highly-regarded local sources, to be prepared for the butcher’s counter or processed into Nelsons prestigious hand-made pies and sausages. The message coming through, loud and clear, is that the reputation, gained over nearly five decades by Nelsons and that established by Sandalls in Bourne, is worth fighting to retain. Very little is likely to change, (although, unfortunately, the light blue, Nelsons mobile butchery van will no longer be visiting our local villages.) The familiar cheery welcomes from Alan and Caroline will still be there when you enter the West Street shop, and the challenges to provide high quality, locally sourced, meat at fair and affordable prices are ones which Kris and Matt are eagerly anticipating. august 2018

History

Discovering . . . The fire brigade

Rex Needle

T

here was a fire brigade in Bourne as early as 1815, administered by local fire insurance companies who owned a water pump and those who paid premiums for protection were given a metal plaque or mark bearing the name of the particular company which was attached to the outside of the building to identify it in the event of a blaze when others were usually ignored. However, the appliance and equipment were often poorly maintained through lack of funds and in 1874 an Act of Parliament transferred responsibility for its upkeep to the local authority when the horse-drawn pump was kept underneath one of the arches of the Town Hall, a manual appliance requiring crews of four men working each side and delivering a single jet of water although when the firemen became exhausted bystanders were often recruited to take over. In 1900, Bourne Urban District Council bought a horse drawn steam pump manned by twelve volunteers capable of delivering several jets and firemen proudly posed outside the Town Hall with the appliance wearing smart new uniforms with brass helmets, leather belts and boots. A pair of grey horses used to pull the appliance were stabled in the yard of the Bull public house next door [now the Burghley Arms] and were shared by a local undertakers who also used them for their hearse.

Bourne

In 1928, a Dennis trailer pump was purchased and this was towed by a lorry borrowed from a local firm. Firemen were called out by a brass fire bell on the chimney of the Bull which was rung by pulling a rope with a pulley wheel but placed high enough to be out of the reach of mischievous children. The steam pump was replaced in 1930 by the brigade’s first motor tender towing a trailer pump with long ladders on the top and benches alongside on which firemen sat while travelling to a fire. Work began in 1944 on a new fire station in South Street which has since been rebuilt and modernised to include an appliance room, stores, repairs, muster and watch rooms, a station office, social clubroom and kitchen. Today, the Bourne station is part of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue which covers the entire county with the latest vehicles and equipment, also turning out for other disasters including road accidents and air crashes. Unlike 200 years ago therefore, life and property is now in good hands in the event of an emergency. How to gain up to a third more storage space in your home, in just one day! Space is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought: “It would be good to keep this; the problem is where?” Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that can add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Access4Lofts solve all these problems with simplicity. They specialise in developing lofts for storage. Safe access to your loft... The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter. “My experience enables fitting the ladder and converting the access hatch, in double-quick time. The space is accessible and there's no mess left behind," says Paul Norgate of Access4Lofts Peterborough. 24 36

Floored and useful... Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your winter/summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space you'll wonder how you lived without it for so long. Added property value exceeds fitting cost... With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft, everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at. If you'd like to find out how Paul can transform your loft into a useful storage area, then give him a call on 01733 663207 or take a look at www.access4lofts.co.uk/peterborough Ug Gu UsStT 22001188 aAu

Sound Employment Advice is Always Important By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors

The world of Employment Law appears to become more involved and complex year on year. The history of Employment Law comes from the recognising of basic rights and responsibilities as society has evolved. In the past, there has been polarised opinion depending on whether you were an employer, employee or involved with a trade union.

contract of employment has evolved, depending on the type of business and how detailed the employer feels the contract should be, but under legislation, some matters do always need to be recorded appropriately. Some employers will opt for a separate handbook, detailing responses to many areas in the workplace. Many businesses are sufficiently large to require a “Human Resources Department”, previously called ‘Personnel’.

In the world today, these issues may be seen to be more settled, perhaps, but careful thought should always be given to addressing these matters.

From the employees’ perspective, trade unions grew up from the social needs of the industrial age. The area of trade unionism developed its own legal protection and regulation.

From an employer’s point of view, the

These days, rather than there

being large scale issues to resolve, Employment Law is generally more focused on the rights and responsibilities of the parties as individuals. The type of matters that might need to be addressed are varied, and independent legal advice should always be taken. Anything from redundancy, unfair dismissal and changes to employment terms, will be familiar to Employment lawyers. However, there is a very large and increasing range of law to consider. Time limits for claims and the role of ACAS are also crucial, whilst internal grievance and disciplinary procedures are also important. Sometimes disputes are settled by agreement. Anyone with concerns about these issues should always take advice.

Let Newton Fallowell Make this Scintillating Summer Sizzle for You by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell

A

ugust is a fantastic month as it’s my birthday this month but there are many more reasons to be cheerful other than that. The school holidays are well in gear and many of you have your summer holidays happening. Catching some rays has been so easy here that the normal chase to Spain and France etc for that summer feeling seems pointless as the heatwave, aka summer, continues. But a break from the grind is critical to keep the mind refreshed so all power to you. Get out there and set the dial to maximum relaxation. Yes, I know I’ve not mentioned the football yet. Newton Fallowell would like to congratulate the England squad on a fantastic job getting further than many of us dared hope. Next World Cup

this team will have developed and grown and I’m sure they’ll do us proud again. Congratulations to France as winners; it was a great final and the 4-2 score was exciting, regardless of who you supported. So, what does all this mean for the housing market? Well it means that for many, life will be starting to calm down a tad. Plans to move do sometimes get postponed until September but buyers are always around so if you’re not jet setting in Ibiza or lounging in Florida, we can help you move. For all your property advice from valuations, sales, mortgages to surveys, we’re always here as Bourne’s award-winning agent.

Your Finances

Retirement: Valuable Pensions Advice by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

A

nyone who is accumulating wealth for retirement needs to have a good close look at their current pension contract(s). There are many “closed companies”, (i.e.companies who do not sell any new contracts but buy failing insurance companies and look after their existing ones), whose charges are often high and whose investment returns tend to be below average. If you ask yourself the question, “If I had £10,000 in my bank account, earning 0.25% interest per year, would I look to change it?” if the answer is yes, then why wouldn’t you look at the £50,000 in your pension account? On charges alone, a saving of 1% per year would result in a 22% bigger pot in twenty years’ time.

Putting it simply, I cannot stress too much just how important retirement planning is - one day you will want to retire, especially if many of your friends are doing so. If you have not made sufficient provision by that time, it is unlikely that you will be able to do so from that point onwards. Bear in mind that, to get an income of £10,000 per year, you are likely to need a pot of £200,000. If your employer offers a scheme (and if they don’t, they soon will – it’s the law) then join it - your employer will pay into it alongside your own contributions, so you can think of it as a pay rise! If your bank offered a special account where you paid in £40 and the government paid in a further £10, and then the bank more or less doubled that amount, there

would be a queue around the block to open one - this, effectively, is what your employer is offering. And for those approaching retirement, it’s even more important. You can take the pension on offer from your existing provider, but it’s unlikely to be a good deal or offer much in the way of flexibility. The choices have increased massively, especially since April 2015, so you can even take your whole pot out as a single lump sum if you like, although the Inland Revenue will love you for it! If you have any concerns or questions about your pension arrangements, feel free to give us a call on the number below and explore your options. We promise to do the best for you and work to your own circumstances and needs, not those of a faceless insurance company.

However, as well as protecting your property from burglars, it is also worth giving some thought to preventing domestic dramas whilst you’re away. Research has shown that around 25% of Brits have come back from their holiday to a home emergency, with water leaks the most common problem for those who have been faced with an unexpected disaster. Boiler breakdowns, pest infestations, and appliance breakdowns are among some of the other unwanted homecoming dramas. Turning off the water supply at the stopcock, switching off the boiler and unplugging all electrical items before going away are sound preventative measures. However, if you are unfortunate enough to come home to face the holiday blues because of a household crisis, Safe Local Trades has recommended professionals from electricians, bug busters, plumbers and many more at www.safelocaltrades. com. august 2018

Having a Bad Ear Day - Advice from Alder Vets

E

ar disease is annoying for both pet and owner alike, since it causes painful, irritated, itchy and smelly ears, and is one of the most common complaints when seeking veterinary advice, and one of the most frustrating to treat.

are the worst offenders, causing extreme pain and irritation.

The outer part of a dog’s ear comes in a huge variety of shapes because of the breeds we have developed from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane. Essentially, the ear canal is L-shaped with vertical and horizontal sections, unlike the human ear canal which is a straight tube. The cells lining the canal secrete wax which is pale beige in colour and is constantly being moved out of the canal by microscopic waving hairs. This conveyor belt combination is designed to remove debris blown into the ear and any build up of yeasts and bacteria. A thin membrane lies at the end of the canal, known as the tympanic membrane or eardrum, and its job is to amplify sound to the middle ear.

Most times, keeping the ear free of overproduced black wax and moisture helps to reduce the incidence of ear disease, and using proper canine ear cleaner is sufficient. However, infections can soon invade. If your pet has been prescribed antibiotic ear drops, it is important to complete the course and have him checked afterwards to make sure the infection is completely gone. In some cases, gentle ear flushing is required. Unlike humans, we must anaesthetise dogs for this, as they need to remain still to prevent damage to the eardrum.

If the ear canal becomes abnormal then the normal waxy barrier cannot function, and ear disease develops. Some ear canals are too narrow or hairy to allow air to flow properly and this causes moisture retention. For some pets, skin allergies also inflame the skin within the ears and can activate overproduction of wax. Occasionally, foreign bodies are found in the ear and grass seeds

When a dog rubs his ears on the carpet, shakes his head vigorously or when there is a distinctive smell to the ears, it is time to see the vet.

infections or their underlying causes, most ear diseases clear quickly. It doesn’t take long on a ‘bad ear day’ to look under the flap and have a quick peek.

Unfortunately, a minority of dogs will go on to have end-stage ear disease, where the infected tissue of the ear canal completely closes it. The ear then becomes a constant source of pain and also results in severe, if not complete, hearing loss. In these cases, surgery may be the best solution. Because of the variety of breeds and ear shapes, each dog’s problem is unique but with regular cleaning and prompt treatment of any

Spotlight on Bands

“Clutching At Straws” - Experienced Musicians, Professional Attitude and Serious Fun

Familiar faces on the local gig circuit, Clutching At Straws are a Bourne-based, five piece band who have been delighting audiences for over twentyfive years with their classic rock and pop covers from the 1960s to the 1990s. Clutching At Straws are Tim Ray (guitar); Simon Hooson (drums); Kev Fryett (keyboards); Johnny Robottom (guitar) and Colin Wheatley (bass guitar). They all sing, sometimes all at once! Don’t be fooled by their name; these chaps are experienced musicians with professional kit and a professional attitude - they play for fun but we’re talking serious fun! The band have done several recording sessions over the years, but live gigs are where they really come alive and shine. All having full-time jobs, they play mostly around their local area in pubs, clubs and event marquees, but have also gigged across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, and further afield at venues in London, Milton Keynes and Chelmsford. They’ve lost count of the number of gigs they’ve played, although there have been many memorable ones. The first half of 2018 brought a career highlight for the band with their acclaimed headline performance on Saturday night at Bourne Festival which was a great night with a fantastic audience. Harmony vocals, Hammond organ and twin lead guitars put Clutching At Straws’ distinctive stamp on

songs from The Beatles to Green Day, Lynyrd Skynyrd to Abba, Queen to Bo Diddley, The Small Faces to The Undertones. (Yes, you did read Abba in there.) With a repertoire of close to one hundred songs, there’s bound to be something you know and love that’s been given the Clutching At Straws treatment. There are no divas here; it’s all about the music, and when they are offstage you’ll find Clutching At Straws at the bar - they’ll be happy to have a chat and a chuckle with you. They’ll make you smile, they’ll make you grin, they’ll probably get you singing along, they’ll get your toes tapping, so bring your dancing shoes to a Clutching At Straws gig near you!

august 2018

It’s a Scarecrow Invasion - Dyke Scarecrow Festival September is usually one of the quietest months, as children return to school and the evenings draw in – yet, it’s at precisely this time that the picturesque village of Dyke, just north of Bourne, comes alive! An invasion of scarecrows engulfs the village - they hang from trees, peek around buildings, lounge in gardens and clamber over walls, in competition to be the best creation that visitors have seen. What started several years ago as a simple scarecrow festival has now morphed into a huge, fun-packed weekend festival, with beer and live music, classic cars, craft fairs and an inflatable extravaganza – all accompanied by dancers, martial arts performances, theatre groups and even a Tuneless Choir! We are also pleased to welcome ‘The Voice Kids’ star, Tabitha Gervis, who will be performing on the Saturday between 12 noon and 1.00pm. Food vendors will be preparing dishes from Mexico, the Caribbean and the Orient, as well as the more traditional beefburgers and hot dogs. And, if that’s not enough, we’ll be treated over the weekend to the Battle of Britain flight! Dyke Scarecrow Festival kicks off at 7pm on Friday, September 7th, when residents and visitors are welcomed to a full weekend’s entertainment and a tantalising selection of real ales. It’s free to enter the marquee, with two live bands playing each night, (Dean & Co on Friday at 7.30pm; then, on Saturday at 7.30pm, Pennyless, followed by Uninvited Guest) – all you have to buy is your drink! The play area will spring to life on Saturday morning, as classic cars arrive, craft stalls are

arranged, and food vendors switch on their ovens and hot plates. The scarecrow competition commences at 10am , but you don’t have to be a resident to enter your own creation - just send your details and name for the scarecrow to contact@dykevillagehall. org.uk to take part. There is a programme of events for the whole weekend, including a performance by the Tuneless Choir, ‘Bourne to Dance’ and Friends of Stamford and Rutland Theatre. Details can be found at www.dykevillagehall.org.uk. Car parking is FREE. Entrance to the festival main area is £2 p.p. Brian Parkinson, a festival organiser and Chair of Dyke Village Hall Committee says: “The planning for the event gets more elaborate each year, and we have a team of people busy behind the scenes to make sure the weekend is fun and engaging for everyone, young and old. It is a family event and we would love as many people as possible to get involved – whether as a visitor or by creating your own scarecrow. It’s a weekend’s worth of entertainment that’s easy on the pocket.”

Police Patrol

Special Constables - What’s That All About Then? Special Inspector, Ben Stanley, has the answer:

T

he Special Constabulary are volunteer police officers. Also known as ‘specials’, they carry out policing duties in their spare time. They come from all walks of life they are teachers, taxi drivers, accountants and secretaries, or any number of other careers. People join the Special Constabulary for many different reasons. You may want: • to give something back to the community • to learn new skills and gain valuable experience

• safeguarding the public at local and major events

• to challenge yourself • to learn first-hand about the police force before committing to a full-time job there As a special, you perform police duties under the supervision of regular officers and experienced specials. You will take on a diverse range of roles, including: • conducting local, intelligence based patrols

• tackling anti-social behaviour • spending time at local schools to educate on safety • providing operational support to regular officers You will have the same powers as a regular police officer, wear the same uniform and receive initial and continuous training. Our specials commit to at least four hours a week which is flexible to fit around your other commitments.

• taking part in crime prevention initiatives • policing major incidents • conducting enquiries • assisting at scenes of accidents

Becoming a special is a great way for you to make a difference in your community. At the same time, you can develop your personal skills and experiences.

We offer an excellent training programme and mentoring scheme that will help you build knowledge and confidence. We will help you achieve all your personal goals as a special. More help and support Visit the Lincolnshire Police website, www.lincspolice.co.uk and follow the link for ‘join us’ and then click on Special Constables. School News Baston C. E. Primary School Recently we have celebrated sports week, where we had a variety of new sports, including zorbs, footdarts, ultimate frisbee, fencing, streetdance, cheerleading, tennis, and Bollywood dancing, and we all had a great time throughout the week. We also held our sports day during this week, where all children could participate in all races. We are extremely grateful to our PTA who help to fund the vast majority of these activities. Our Year 6 pupils travelled to Shropshire straight after half-term, where they stayed at Condover Hall. The sun shone for most of the week and they experienced being independent and organised for all activities. Many of the children conquered their fear of heights whilst taking part in abseiling, climbing, ariel trek and fan descender. Team

building activities included raft building, buggy building and dance mania. Everyone was exhausted on the return journey home; however, the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Years 6 and 4 have been celebrating Christianity by attending the Lincoln Cathedral Leavers’ Service and the Churches Together Festival in Stamford. Year 6 learnt about birds of prey and how to ‘bell ring’ during their session in Lincoln. Our PTA has also funded a trip from the Hobgoblin Theatre Company where Key Stage 1 watched Little Red Riding Hood, and Key Stage 2 watched a performance about the Tudors, followed by drama workshops. A number of students have been practising throughout the year to prepare for the annual Rock Band Tour which is organised through our cluster by our peripatetic music teachers. They ‘toured’ the local schools on a bus, like a real band and performed to large audiences too.

Thurlby C.P. School - Farm Kitchen Activity Day Our Year 2 to Year 5 children enjoyed an Activity Day from our school meals supplier, The Farm Kitchen, on Wednesday July 4th. The children enjoyed an interactive day, learning how to make a creamy coconut chicken and vegetable curry. The activity was designed to encourage children to talk about food and try new tastes and flavours. The day was a huge success with many children saying their curry was delicious! a u gus t 2 018

Mayor

Advice

Words from the Mayor David Mapp

At the time of writing, the country is enjoying one of the hottest, driest summers on record, and England are still in the World Cup. As I was appointed at the end of May can I lay claim to both achievements? Probably not. It must be just a coincidence! On that basis don’t blame me if, by the time you read this, England have failed in their quest or that the heavens have opened! Over the last few weeks Christine and I have attended delightful civic services at Deeping, Stamford and Peterborough, enjoying the events together with meeting lovely people from around the area. The service at Peterborough Cathedral was particularly memorable in what is a special building, the Cathedral choir and organ music proving a moving experience. I have also attended part of the children’s “Mini-Olympics” over a three-day period in Grantham, and the Bourne Elsea Park Primary Academy summer fayre. Both events proved most enjoyable for those involved and I understand the fayre raised around £400. My thanks go to the Academy’s PTFA for their invitation to open the event, particularly Louise Rogers, the chair, who with members of staff gave me a guided tour of this modern Bourne facility. Overall, I must start cutting down on the consumption of sandwiches and cake, as an increase in weight is starting to gather momentum at an alarming rate. In the last issue I asked for suggestions for a title for a sub-piece where I try and give information on current local issues. To date, I have received a number of “interesting” comments, some of which may be, let’s say, a little controversial. Those I can print are “Council Capers”, “Mapping the Route” and “The Bourne Connection”, in homage to the film trilogy. The closing date for entries is the end of July.

Citizens Advice is Looking for New Volunteers Having launched a new style of service at their outreach in Bourne, Citizens Advice are looking to increase the number of volunteers there, and at the main office in Spalding. The new service is called Initial Check, and it lasts just a few minutes. It allows people who drop in, to talk through their issue, allowing a quick assessment of whether they can seek further help themselves; whether they can be signposted to another organisation with specialist skills; or whether the Citizens Advice team can help with advice. In Bourne, the service is operating alongside traditional face-to-face advice, and has transformed the amount of people who can be seen during opening hours. “We had a very successful year in 2017-18, where the value of our volunteers leapt from £581,467 to £783,162, ” said Megan Millar, Training Officer, “and now, if anyone is able to volunteer for six hours a week, we would be delighted to hear from them, either by contacting me on trainingofficer@citizendsadvicesouthlincs.org.uk, or by filling in the enquiry form on our website www. citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk. Interviews will be held in August for a September intake, and will be part of an introduction day which gives details on every role in the organisation, presented by the volunteers who are currently carrying them out. “People are surprised when they hear about the range of volunteer roles available,” said Megan, “and we can always find a role that is suitable for each individual’s range of skills and experience.”

In the meantime … ● The East Midlands in Bloom and RHS judges left on a high, having visited Bourne to view the town at its best. “In Bloom” is not just about horticulture but community cohesion. The results of the town’s efforts are eagerly awaited.

Wake House, 41 North Street, Bourne, Lincs PE10 9AE Opening times: Thursday 10:00am – 3:00pm

● The Council and Len Pick Trust are supporting a local artist, Sue Rowland, schools and other community groups, to produce a wall-hanging, textile commemoration, celebrating the centenary of the ending of World War 1. More details will follow.

Deeping St. James

● A rumour which started some six years ago is coming to fruition, as work on a new Wetherspoons in North Street is to start shortly. I’ll drink to that! 72
