A Riverside Walk A stroll from Carmarthen town centre to the riverside is only short but you’ll encounter a huge variety of history and natural wonders. The poetic genius of Dylan Thomas lives on in Laugharne. Indeed, the homely little township snuggled into a nook of the River Taf attracts admirers from around the world. And there’s much to see, do and cherish. Of Dylan’s former homes, the Boathouse is the most iconic. He lived there with his family from 1949 until his death in 1953, working in his writing shed on masterpieces such as Under Milk Wood. He drank at Browns Hotel which has just been stunningly revamped in glorious post-war style. Chat to the welcoming locals whilst propping up Dylan’s bar with a pint of Welsh ale. He and wife Caitlin are buried beneath a simple wooden cross in the graveyard at St Martin’s Church. Make it part of an emotional walking tour with a copy of the great man’s poems in your backpack. Pen some verse yourself, why don’t you? For further inspiration visit the quirky Corran Books, a rabbit-warren shop brimful of hardbacks, paperbacks, pamphlets, leaflets, postcards and maps. The streets, shoreline and hills which inspired Dylan are largely unchanged so do wander and enjoy the company and knowledge of those who live here. Need reviving after a long day of fresh air, culture and tales? Try The Cors restaurant with its terrifically eccentric Alice in Wonderland quality, the Mediterranean-inspired Café Culture or the fine pizza’s at the New Three Mariners pub. Then relax in bed with a good book from Dylan Thomas’s short but celebrated life. Sleep will be so much the better for it.

All Wales Coast Path - Pendine to Amroth Carmarthen Bay is a coastline of great natural contrasts and one of its loveliest stretches runs for around 4.5 miles between Pendine and Amroth. An isolated coastline of rugged beauty, this forms part of the All Wales Coast Path. Hilltops with iron age forts provide panoramic views, thousands of sea birds keep busy and there are fabulous plants that thrive in the shade of the blackthorn bushes. A battered slab of concrete is among the evidence of a secret World War two training exercise and local legend has it that Teagues Wood was the place where the last wild wolf in Wales was killed. Caves were once used by smugglers to store their contraband. World-famous actor John RhysDavies is an Ammanford boy. He is best known to film audiences for his roles in the blockbuster 1980s Indiana Jones films, and the Lord of the Rings series. Ammanford’s most recent claim to fame llety-rhamantus is that it is the home town of Alex Jones, the co-presenter of the popular One Show on BBC1 primetime television. Ammanford’s greatest sporting hero is undoubtedly Shane Williams, the flying winger who has played for The Ospreys, Wales and the British Lions. Williams has an amazing try-scoring record and currently (in the summer of 2010) stands on 53 international tries with 51 for Wales and two for the British and Irish Lions. 'Y Twrch Trwyth' means The Wild Boar and is featured throughout Ammanford because legend has it that King Arthur and his knights hunted the Wild Boar in the Amman Valley. The town's Welsh motto is given as "Hanfod Tref Trefn", which might be translated as "The basis of a good town is

The Black Mountain Centre in Brynaman, with its home-cooked food and heritage displays, is an ideal place to start and finish an energetic hike high in the western Brecon Beacons National Park. Walks and footpaths here provide a full range of adventure, from gentle strolls, to a day’s hiking; the common has evidence of settlements dating as far back as the Bronze Age, as well as evidence of industrial activity from more modern times. For something less strenuous, head for the landscaped Parc Golwg yr Aman. It has a multiwall where many ball games can be played and over the river is the Amman United rugby pitch. There are 450 acres of mosaic lakes, scrapes, pools, streams and lagoons to explore, adjoining the salt marshes and shore of the scenic Burry Inlet. The range of habitats makes the site a refuge for many different plants and animals; from year-round members of the centre’s world wildfowl collection (including pink Caribbean flamingos) to seasonal flocks of wild birds numbering up to 50,000 strong. The centre also boasts 20 or more species of dragonfly and damselfly. The centre has plenty to keep the children entertained on top of the great outdoors and hundreds of ducks and birds to spot and feed. There's a traditional play area set among the trees where kids can climb and parents can relax. At Vole City, children can have endless fun crawling through the winding tunnels. Swan’s Maze: a giant bird’s nest with the aim being to get through to the maze and into the middle of the nest (where there are four giant eggs hidden). Throughout the school holidays the centre runs canoe safari’sllety-rhamantus giving you the chance to explore otherwise inaccessible watery expanses and look out for wildlife on the water. The centre also has a fleet of 25 bikes (including toddler trailers and a Trek tandem), which visitors can hop aboard to explore the paths weaving through the millennium wetlands. Heart of Wales Line From Llanelli, the Heart of Wales railway heads north, taking in the rugged beauty, tranquil villages and picturesque Victorian spa towns dotted along one of the UK’s most scenic lines. For around 115 miles until Shrewsbury, a feast of panoramic views includes the meandering River Tywi between Llandeilo and Llandovery, red kites in the skies above the Eppynt hills, the Radnor Forest and the remote borderlands of the English Marches. The impressive viaducts at Cynghordy and Knucklas are among the seven bridges crossed on a journey that includes six tunnels. Get Lucky! Dolaucothi, on wooded hillsides overlooking the Cothi Valley, operated as a gold mine from Roman times to the 20th Century. Now a National Trust attraction, it offers the chance to pan for your own gold. There are guided tours underground and overground and regular events. Waymarked walks offer breathtaking views across the countryside.
The wildlife and habitats mean that Dolaucothi is designated as both a geological and biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. You'll also find oak woods, areas of wet willow woodland and a large number of mosses, lichens, liverwort and fern species. Some are only found in a few locations in Wales. The area's archaeology is protected by law such is it’s precious nature. Although it's possible Dolaucothi was mined before 70 AD, strong evidence suggests that the Romans were the first to explore the Welsh landscape to
search for gold. And how did they make it work here? Well, skilled men diverted water from the hills to wash away waste rock, leaving the heavier gold behind. This was then sent to be made into coins at the Imperial Mint at Lyon. Incidentally, the old stone of Pumpsaint in the heart of the Dolaucothi estate is the subject of myth and legend. One tale tells of a sorcerer attacking five men with a hail storm so violent that their heads made dents in the rock. He took them down into his cave where they still rest in an enchanted sleep. The Red Kite Feeding Station Llanddeusant In Wales 20 years ago there were fewer than 30 breeding pairs of kites, a beautiful mediumlarge bird of prey. Now, with careful management and protection, there are well over 300 pairs. The Red Kite Feeding Station in the village of Llanddeusant has helped in no small way. VILLAGE PEOPLE : The old picturesque village of Rhandirmwyn runs along both sides of the Towy. At its beating heart is the Royal Oak, a homely country inn celebrated far and wide. DRYSLWYN CASTLE : A native Welsh castle recently uncovered by excavation, now its ruins stand high above the River Tywi. Occuppied by the princes of Deheubarth, it was taken by the forces of King Edward I in 1287. Dryslwyn was later betrayed to Owain Glyndŵr in 1403 steeped in history and well worth a visit. www.cadw.wales.gov.uk

PAXTONS TOWER : Local legend says that this 'folly' was built out of spite. Paxton spent thousands of pounds trying to get elected to Parliament in 1802 only to be defeated by 45 votes. He built the tower instead of the bridge across the river Tywi that had been his election promise. A more likely explanation, though, is that the tower was built in the spirit of the times, as a place to wine and dine his guests and take in the panoramic views from this spot. www.cadw.wales.gov.uk
One of the finest gardens in Wales, the site has been an inspiration to poets since 1477. Yet, although its story spans many centuries, the origins of the eye catching house remain shrouded in obscurity. Events, courses and exhibitions are a regular feature and photogenic sights include a gatehouse, yew tunnel, portico, cloister garden, pool garden, stream garden and walled gardens. The highlight for many is the amazing ninfarium, a unique garden within the mansion’s ruinous central rooms and courtyard. Dinefwr Park and Castle This is an iconic place in the history of Wales. Two forts are evidence of a dominant Roman presence. Newton House gives visitors an atmospheric 1912-style experience. Heritage Hunt Wales owes a great deal to wool. It’s been one of the nation’s most important industries. So it’s no surprise that there’s a National Wool Museum – and that it’s in the historic former Cambrian Mills at Dre-fach Felindre. Shirts, shawls, blankets, bedcovers, stockings and socks were made here and sold around the world. Museum visitors can follow the wool making process from fleece to fabric, taking in machinery, smart exhibitions and textiles being produced at Melin Teifi, the site's commercial mill. Top Treks Carmarthenshire has around 80 miles of the Wales Coast Path – and St Clears, with its fabulous remnants of a motte and bailey castle, is a splendid stop or start point for decent treks to Llansteffan and Laugharne. Kidwelly Castle For a remarkable vision of medieval times you’ll go a long way to beat this Welsh wonder which stands proud above the River Gwendraeth. More complete than many of its 13th Century contemporaries, Kidwelly Castle is one of the most complete such structures in the UK. Its highly impressive great gatehouse was completed in 1422. Look out too for the arches through which rocks could be thrown onto attackers then allow your imagination to run riot and imagine defending the castle from your enemies. Unsurprisingly, it attracts thousands of visitors each year. There are some lovely riverside walks nearby too. The castle does, of course, have grizzly tales of battles and sieges. Indeed, the whole area oozes history in all its colourful varieties; in
1843 Mynydd Sylen above the Gwendraeth Valley saw the greatest Rebecca Riots meeting as angry locals protested against toll road charges. In 1963 local protests saw the village of Llangyndeyrn saved from being drowned by plans for a reservoir. They know a thing or two about attack and defence in this part of the world. Kidwelly itself, incidentally, is one of the oldest communities in Wales, established as a borough in the early 1100s. The first townspeople were English, French and Flemish immigrants, traders and agriculturalists integrated to consolidate the Norman hold on the district. LUNCH ANYONE? Right next to the main rail line to London – and a few yards from the wide Towy estuary, Ferryside’s Ferry Cabin provides walkers, beach lovers and watersports enthusiasts with platefuls of hearty food. There’s fish straight from the sea and local sea trout also known as sewin. Sunday lunchtimes are buzzing.
Llyn Llech Owain Steeped in myth and ledgend, the lake and forest at Llyn Llech Owain pulls in locals and tourists. At the heart of this spectacular park is its dramatic lake which is surrounded by peat bog and there’s a lovely myth associated with Llyn Lech Owain. Legend has it that Owain Lawgoch ("Owain of the Red Hand" - who led an army of French mercenaries against the English in the Hundred Years' War), was entrusted to look after a well on the mountain named Mynydd Mawr. Each day, after extracting enough water for himself and his horse, Owain was always careful to replace the stone but on one occasion he forgot and a torrent of water poured down the side of the mountain. The resultant lake was hence named Llyn Lech Owain - the lake of Owain’s slab. Today, specially constructed paths allow for safe access over the bog and around the lake. STEEL YOURSELF : Kidwelly Industrial Museum is on the site of the UK’s second oldest recorded tinplate works. Indeed, it’s the only such attraction dedicated to tinplate, thinly rolled iron or steel coated with tin to resist corrosion and useful for food, drink and tobacco containers. This works was established in 1737 and closed in 1941. www.kidwellyindustrialmuseum.co.uk

QUAY TO THE PAST : Take a stroll along Wales’ oldest canal in Kidwelly and it’s difficult to believe that this former industrial highway was once a major part of the local economy. Now it’s a glorious wildlife sanctuary. Thanks to Thomas Kymer, by the way, who built the canal and quay in the 1700s to aid coal exports.

FFOSLAS RACECOURSE : A day at the races can really lift the spirits. With plenty of space to wander – and children well catered for - Ffos Las offers a great few hours out with a series of themed race days. 2009 saw top class racing brought back to West Wales for the first time in 70 years. The setting in the Gwendraeth valley is magnificent it’s hard to believe the site was a former open cast coalmine.

CWMCERRIG FARM SHOP : A vast emporium of local produce which stocks everything from vegetables dug up in local fields to hand-patted Welsh butter. Even the sewin (sea trout) sold by Cross Hands-based fine food specialists Cnwd is sold here. The sewin used in Cnwd products is caught by West Wales fishermen in tiny ancient boats known as coracles. It’s rather special – a genuine Welsh gastronomic treasure. BURRY PORT HARBOUR STROLL : Park up at Burry Port Harbour & stroll or cycle (it’s part of the Celtic Trail/Sustrans National Cycleway Network) westwards towards Pembrey with the spectacular backdrop of the Gower Peninsula on your left. Enjoyable at any time of year, but really excels in the spring and summer months. Burry Port is a transformed harbour town within the Millennium Coastal Park – modern marina and landscaped seafront have brought new life to an historic port. Nearby Pembrey is full of interest – popular, attraction-packed Pembrey Country Park, Pembrey Sands and Motor Sports Centre. Burry Port was made famous because of an accident! At the local copper works, some green baize from a worker’s apron accidentally fell into a vat and became waterproofed during the copper making process; this created the waterproof material of mackintoshes. In 1928, Burry Port was world famous because Amelia Earhart, who became the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic non-stop, landed here. By the way, the area’s not always been so welcoming and fun. The sands were treacherous to early sailing ships and a number were lost here. They included La Jeune Emma, bound for France in 1828 but blown off course. One of the 13 drowned was a 12-year-old niece of Napoleon Bonaparte's ex-wife Josephine de Beauharnais.

Treat PICKLED EGGS AND PUBS On the way to the harbour, you will notice the famous Parsons Pickles factory. Here, they produce the finest pickles to a secret recipe. Other lines include pickled eggs, laverbread and cockles. Their products are exported all over the world. The Butchers Arms in Pembrey contains memorabilia from the motor racing circuit and there are other welcoming pubs at The Pembrey Inn, the Red Lion Inn and The Ship Aground Inn, which is worth a visit to study the stunning floral displays. The Ashburnham Hotel is also a popular venue for Sunday carvery lunches. In Burry Port, there are pubs and clubs galore - The Caulfield Hotel, the Coasting Pilot, The Neptune, Taylor’s Steak House and The George, to name a few.
