Paws for Thought Festive Fat? Summer Fit! Following the excesses of the holiday season, many of us are a little worried about the tightness of our clothes. Obesity is not only a hot topic in the medical and political fields, it is also of great concern in the veterinary world. There is a trend for modern pets, like modern humans, to eat better food and take less exercise than their predecessors.

Is My Pet Overweight?

When Love and Work Collide

EMPLOYMENT LAW

Valentine’s Day is here again and for many employers, this serves as a reminder that love can be found in many places, including at work. With people dedicating more time to their careers, relationships between colleagues are now common. Although romance in the air may increase morale, employee relationships can be problematic for employers for several reasons: •P roductivity can decrease, both for the

one partner continues to pursue the other, a potential sexual harassment claim.

Can employers ban these relationships or dismiss colleagues who engage in them? Probably not. Apart from secretive relationships being difficult to prove and a ban being tricky to enforce, this may be in breach of an employee’s right to a private life under the Human Rights Act 1998. Employers can, however, put a policy in place which requires employees in relationships with colleagues to be discreet,

cannot sign away their rights to protection from sexual harassment.

to behave in a professional manner and to declare any relationships where one person has authority over the other at work.

Similarly, employers should be consistent in their attitude to all office relationships, whether they are heterosexual, same-sex, married or unmarried. Disciplinary issues such as breaching confidentiality P4B Law Ltd. should be treated in accordance Tel: 01443 535535 with the employer’s usual policy. Email: info@p4b-law.co.uk

The USA has taken this one step further and ‘love contracts’ are a feature of some workplaces; colleagues in relationships with each other sign to confirm that their relationship is consensual and that they are aware of the workplace’s sexual harassment policy. However, in the UK this contract would not prevent a tribunal claim as employees

Employers could consider moving colleagues in relationships with each other to different departments if they have good reason to believe that their work is being adversely affected. However, they would need to be careful that they do not take sides and that both people are treated in the same way so as not to invite accusations of gender discrimination.

WELSH HEARTS

Every Second Counts Cardiff ’s Defibrillator Appeal Every second counts when you’re having a cardiac arrest. There are 8000 sudden cardiac arrests outside hospital in Wales every year, and only a 3% survival rate, in fact, survival chances decrease by 14% for every minute that passes. A defibrillator is able to restart the heart during a cardiac arrest, and can save lives. When used, survival rates increase to 50%, but a speedy response is crucial. This is the reason we have launched our Every Second Counts appeal in Cardiff.

The Welsh Hearts mission is centred on the prevention and management of heart disease, and to fund cardiovascular medical research based in Wales.

Too many people in Cardiff are losing their lives to heart disease on a daily basis. With your support we would like to place 500 defibrillators throughout Wales’ capital city. We will also be providing free CPR training for schools, businesses and sports clubs.

• To preserve, safeguard and promote the cardiovascular health of all persons in Wales.

Welsh Hearts raises funds from Radyr to Rhyl and Morganstown to Machynlleth and we need your help. Please donate today and help us raise much-needed funds at: welshhearts.org/everysecond

Cardiovascular disease accounts for a third of all deaths in Wales, where the death rate is higher than in the majority of countries in Western Europe. The Charity's aim is to:

• To ensure that monies raised in Wales are utilised and distributed within Wales or applied towards medical research conducted in Wales. The charity is particularly keen to work in partnership with others to achieve this goal. Welsh Hearts is also keen to support research students wishing to follow a career in Cardiology research by making grants available for them to pursue a post graduate degree. In close partnership with strategic partners the charity aims to fund the widespread provision of defibrillators throughout Wales. Welsh Hearts has been established as a fundraising organisation to help support Heart projects with a view to the preservation, safeguarding and promotion of cardiovascular health for all persons in Wales.

Emma and Tom & their Great Adventure Part 2

Do we look good in this?

In March 2015, Emma (age 22 from Pentyrch) and Tom (24 from Groes Faen) embarked on their great adventure across South East Asia and Australia. In Part 1 we followed them across South East Asia and their eventual arrival in Darwin, Australia. Having arrived in Darwin in May they both found jobs which they undertook for 5 months to raise much needed funds so that they could both continue on their year long trip. SOUTH WALES

t u O s y a D Great s e l a W h In Sout Looking for a great day out in South Wales? In my view there is one location that wins my vote every time – Llangennith beach on the Gower Peninsula. Llangennith beach is situated on the eastern edge of the Gower Peninsula. Dog-friendly, familyfriendly and great for water sports.

I am always amazed how many people I

Start Of Your Walk – Hill End Approaching Llangennith village continue to the beach signposted Hill End, here you will reach the main gate of the campsite and where you will pay a small fee for parking. Drive down past the café and campsite and park right next to the dunes. From here you can follow the fenced path over the dunes down to the beach. On reaching the beach, turn left, in the distance you will see Rhossili and Worms Head. If you turn right on the beach you can walk to the small island at the north end of the beach Burry Holms. Walking to Burry Holms you can take the cliff top path around to Broughton Bay. Both Worms Head and Burry Holms islands are accessible at low tide only – so do be careful if you decide to take a closer look as people have been known to get stranded as the tide comes in!

The Old Rectory and the Helvetia The walk I prefer is the one towards Rhossili and Worms Head. The walk takes you south along the tidal sand below Rhossili Down, the house at the base of the hill is Rhossili’s much photographed Old Rectory, built in the 1850s, which is now owned and rented out by the National Trust. At the far end of the beach you can see wood from the wreck of the Helvetia which was washed ashore in 1887. Visible at low tide, the timbers have had a major battering in recent years and only fragments now remain. Depending on the tide and weather you will see an abundance of wildlife. On one visit we were amazed to see the water line covered with thousands of starfish and a more recent visit revealed hundreds of jellyfish the size of dustbin lids covering the sand. At the end of the beach you eventually reach the steep ascent up the cliff steps. Once at the top the steps bring you to the Bay Bistro and Coffee House a great place to stop for a well-earned

break and refreshments as you take in the amazing views.

Refreshed you then have a choice of walking out towards the coast guard station by Worms Head and if the tide is in your favour (check at the National Trust shop before setting off ), you can take an exhilarating walk out on Worm’s Head. Worms
